He was the best professor I have had at UC Davis. His lectures are extremely clear and interesting. The reading is not necessary, and his quizzes are easy assuming you studied the lectures. I love this class and Professor Luck and hope to take other classes with him.
A really worth-while class and professor. Straight forward lectures that you need to attend, but you do not have to do the reading at all. I never opened the textbook and I got an A. Tests are surprisingly easy if you attend class and look over the notes. I enjoyed this class and professor immensely. Recommended.
This class moves really quickly: Biweekly quizzes (6total)and 5 reading checks on journal articles. Not too bad if you go to lecture and do the practice quizzes. And I'm sorry, but this guy's kids are not that cute.
Please don't waste money on textbook just get it from the reserves for first couple quizzes. Crazy about his kids, that's kinda cute! Everything is straight forward. His remarks sometimes in class can be ignorant or offensive. He is okay, can get boring with a monotonous tone.
I never read the book and I got by all right. In my opinion, this class isn't easy. His test questions are rather tricky with the 'all of the above' and 'none of the above' choices. But just memorize the notes and you should be fine. Overall, this is a rather boring class, and his constant Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ricky Martin jokes get old.
The best thing about him is is his test policy. He gives 7 tests and breaks down the material really well so you are not bombarded with a lot of it any one time, not even during finals. And he grades really fair. The best for me was his TA Hillary she was super helpful and nice...rest of the stuff he is okay.
I found this class slightly disappointing (even though I got an A) because the lectures were long and boring. However, they are essential because 27 of the 28 questions came from lecture, the last one from the textbook (not worth reading). The professor is knowledgeable and the TA was nice, but I would not recommend the class. Defined Average.
I swear someone either slipped sleeping pills into my coffee or this teacher is so dull that his voiced lulled me to sleep every Tues and Thursday morning. DO NOT listen to the people ahead of me this class was in one word - AWFUL!
I have nothing against the professor personally, but the lecture formats and dry subject material made this into the most boring class I have ever taken. I'm a conscientious student, but I could NOT keep my eyes open. Also, with 7 'quizzes' (really they are tests) and 4 reading checks, you will always be studying. AVOID
Boring in an understatement in describing this guys lectures. More like tedious, dry, and irksome. Thank god he podcasts them making attendance unnecessary in my opinion (he begs to differ). Exams are difficult for a psychology class especially the wording on some questions. In agreement with everyone else do not recommend.
This has to be the MOST boring class I have ever taken in my entire life. He drones on and on and the subject is SO dry and boring as hell. Tests are also really difficult compared to other psychology classes I have taken. avoid, avoid, avoid!!
Worst class I have taken at Davis. Prof. Luck is dull, irritating, and made what could have been an interesting class extremely boring. Tests are tricky and somewhat difficult. I am so glad this class is over so I don't have to hear about Ricky Martin or his kids anymore.
easy class. Well worth it. weekly quizes beats midterms anyday. very helpful!
dull, boring, a bit irritable. this class was really hard, but the optional final really helped my grade. biweekly tests/quizzes are really annoying since once you think you've studied really hard for a test, you have to study again for another hard test in a couple of more days.
The previous comments had me prepared for a hellish experience, but honestly all I had to do was go to class. Contrary to popular opinion I thought he was interesting & very easygoing. The frequent quizzes are a great way to maintain a good grade as none of them can destroy you & require only a chapter of reading to study for. Attend class!!!!!!!!!
At first he is a little bit boring. But the structure of his class is the best i have ever taken. I have learned so much and you catch on to the routine of the class. the review sessions were helpful and I wish that I could take him next quarter. PSY 100
Tests are mainly on the lectures which are printable slides. His class consisted of 6 quizzes and a final each worth 28 points. Drops lowest score. Grades based on normal set curve. Go to lectures it'll help you learn material better.
Good prof but class was kinda hard just on the mere fact that cognitive psych is not exactly the most interesting/easiest to understand - unless prior knowledge of perception, attention, etc. Did not really like the 6 quiz format bc we had a quiz and final on the same day! But I understand why he broke the sections up like that.
Great class, made the material interesting and kept us laughing :) would definitely recommend
I enjoyed Prof. Luck and his teaching style. His lecture notes were available online prior to lecture with podcasts available after lecture. I liked the six quiz format because you didn't need to cram everything at once. Luck was also very helpful and made the class interesting and understandable. Loved the class and would recommend this professor!
Attending the class is very crucial. I do not agree with the other negative comments about him. He's pretty funny, and he keeps us laughing at times because he knows the subject can be very tedious and boring. Overall, he's a pretty nice, funny guy. Plus he loves putting Ricky Martin! LOL very funny :D & his kid is adorable!
don't miss this class with luck. You'll need to rlly understand cogpsych for other classes & luck does an amazing job explaining material like it's a piece of cake. The clss cudve very easily been a bore. He's super concise. Quizzes format helps keep on top of things, and it helps cuz there are diff topics we focus on.
LOVED him. made cog psych enjoyable. straightforward about grading from day 1 , so don't complain after. class is not hard at all, just study lectures well and skim reading prior to quizzes. he even gives sample quizzes/review chatrooms sessions with the ta's night before. he's ALWAYS avail to talk! i even met him at 9am to talk about a DIFF class!
Completely squashed my interest in cognitive psych. I thought the class was too hard for an intro class, and harder than other psych classes in general. He made what could have been interesting really boring, and almost annoying with ricky martin and 'governator' references nonstop. Attendance is necessary but you still will probably do poorly
Cognitive psych. is a tough subject and it's easy to be turned off if it's not your thing. That said, Dr. Luck's coverage of important material is thorough and includes new research. Does a good job explaining very complex material and allows one test grade to be dropped. Dr. Luck stimulated my interest in the subject. TA Mariam was very helpful.
Luck was an amazing professor. He gives you everything you need to know and more in lecture (which you should go to, or the quizzes will be much harder for you) in a crystal clear and passionate fashion. There are 6 quizzes, a final quiz, and 4 reading checks (based off short articles) and that's it. He makes the info. interesting.
He is VERY good at what he does. Not so good as a professor. He talks about Cog Psych like its a piece of cake, then you're like HUH? Semi-interesting. and NOT an easy A at all. not even an easy B. You must THOROUGHLY study to understand and get a good grade. Raw points.
AMAZING Professor! Stimulated my interest in Cognitive PSC. He definitely knows his stuff inside out. Honestly, I thought this class was really easy and straightforward. You know EXACTLY what you need to know so there are no surprises. Do not bother buying the book, just study his lecture outlines REALLY WELL! Great Class.
I stopped attending lectures after the first quiz because I found it more useful to just listen to his podcasts at home and make notes along the way...textbook isn't necessary, so do not waste your money on it. Quizzes aren't difficult at all plus he drops the lowest score which I thought was really cool. Overall good class
One of my favorite psych profs in davis. He definitely will help you stimulate your interest in Psychology. Quizzes are fair (study slides + a little reading should be enough). drops lowest quiz and reading quiz. Learned a lot from him. Highly recommend.
A nice and knowledgeable professor. Reading checks are easy but quizzes require thorough reading. Not an easy A but it is possible, you definitely have to work hard. Listening to podcast and going to lectures benefit you equally.
My least favorite professor I've ever had. Extremely irritating as an instructor. Likes trick questions..made tests ridiculously difficult & hyper detailed. I studied ALL the time & essentially memorized everything he said in class, but on the tests there were always questions that were never covered. Currently getting a B but I know I deserve an A
Best professor ever! He is hard but I think that's how all professors should be. Most PSC profs are TOO EASY for OUR OWN GOOD! He is really enthusiastic, which makes lectures awesome to listen to. It's clear that he is trying to prepare you for the psychology field. He really cares about his students. Highly recommend! It's a challenge but worth it
The class is an online hybrid course, so you only gave to go to class for 3 hours in a 2-week period. The online lectures are very easy to understand. The tests are 5 midterms and an optional final. They are all basically multiple choice, but the questions are pretty difficult.
Professor Luck is just great!!!! He is humorous and cares about students. Do go to the discussions! Discussions are interesting and there may be some exam hints. Exams are not hard I think. But you should definitely study his videos and review the research papers. You'll get an A, don't worry
He made tests extremely difficult.
The online hybrid course is fantastic. It's definitely not an easy A, but if you study his lecture videos for at least two nights before the exam you're likely to get a good grade. One thing with this class is that it's very time consuming. Three to four online lectures a week, and a worksheet due every week. Midterm every 2 weeks 28 questions MC.
Prof. Luck is an amazing professor. The hybrid format makes you learn the material so much better. Just watch the videos and take some notes and the class should be very easy. I aced every test in the class by just watching the video segments twice. The worksheets were graded leniently. Go to TA reviews with questions! Overall, take this class!
The hybrid format is wonderful! Professor Luck is very clear in his videos and made learning fun. It's definitely better than the lecture hall format. This class is VERY time consuming. You have at least 3 quizzes per week and a worksheet due every week. Midterms were easy for me but I watched the lecture videos twice and spaced out my studying.
This is a hybrid class, so lectures are online and there's a weekly discussion that is in person. There's 5 midterms and a final that are 28 questions long. The class isn't hard, but the questions are very specific. There's absolutely no rounding, so for someone who ended up with a 79.3, that means a C, not a B
Professor Luck really knows what he's talking about and is there to help you. His TA is very helpful as well. I really enjoyed the hybrid format but it is a lot of work! As others have mentioned, there's 3-4 quizzes, a mandatory discussion, and a worksheet every week. The tests can be tricky but are doable. GO TO REVIEW SESSIONS.
This class was okay. The worksheets were hard and the tests only had 28 questions, so if you miss one, it's a 96%. The information was interesting and it was definitely easier for me to watch online than it would have been in person. He is a little weird at times, but overall it is a good class. There.s a lot of work so don't take with hard classes
This professor is AMAZING! I absolutely ADORE the hybrid format! Because lectures and quizzes are online, BEWARE OF DEADLINES! They catch up really fast and I'll admit that I missed a few. But, the material is VERY clear and I really like all the quizzing and testing, it really makes the information stick in your head. He gives good feedback too!
Discussion is mandatory where you'll do group work, go over hw, watch videos etc. Video lectures can be tiring to watch but he injects some cool effects in there. Best part: he teaches the statistics in a much clearer way than in PSC41. Not very difficult as long as you stay on top of things and learn actively. Dr. Luck is really nice and helpful
I was a little skeptical about the hybrid format coming into this, but I'm glad I tried it! He gives lots of examples in his videos, but all you really need to know is the main concepts. Worksheets every week starting around Week 2 and video reading quizzes. Tests are vast majority of grade. Test questions are reasonable but one or two tricky ones.
The videos are great and clear most of the time. However, there are five midterms and they are neither easy nor straightforward. And I hate the format of those MCs. Expect work.
Professor Luck is so interesting. He always use his own experience as examples to illustrate the knowledge. Although you need to do lots of quizzes and readings every week, I am not regretful to choose his classes.
He's a pretty good professor overall. However, he does assign A LOT of homework (readings & lecture quizzes) and there are 5 midterms. The discussions are mandatory and they can sometimes be just like mini lectures. The hybrid class is nice because you can listen to lectures and do your hw on your own time. As long as you do the hw you will pass.
PSC 1Y was one of the easiest classes I've taken. The hybrid format makes studying easy. The daily lecture quizzes can be frustrating, but they force you to study, so you are constantly engaging with the lessons. The material for each midterm is A LOT, but 95% of the questions on the exams are straight forward.
PSC1Y is my favorite class at Davis. The subject is incredibly interesting; there is a lot of material to cover, but the tests are totally manageable and straightforward. Professor Luck is wonderful at explaining topics clearly and concisely. If you work hard and stay on top of the homework (lots of it), you will get an A easily.
PSC1Y is an interesting class and an easy A. Prof. Luck is straightforward and explains the class content clearly and with enthusiasm. There is a fair amount of work but it's very simple and super helpful for preparing you for the exams - personally this meant I didn't really have to study for the midterms.
Professor Luck was and forever shall be one of my most favorite professors here at UC Davis. He is extremely engaging, fun, and really wants for you to learn. He is dedicated to the teaching craft and is very understanding. I would absolutely take his class again, and I highly recommend him for anyone taking psych 1.
Prof. Luck is the best!! He is very caring and understanding and truly wants his students to succeed. The course is straightforward and if you keep up with the online work then you'll easily get an A. Assignments can creep up on you so be sure to check Canvas often. The class has 5 midterms and a final, but 1 midterm is dropped. Midterms are all MC
I am so glad I got to take Psychology 1Y with Professor Luck! The blended half-online course made studying easy, and his online video lectures were very concise engaging. Textbook readings can get tedious, but the embedded quizzes in the online lectures and readings really help to prepare you for exams. He always posts study guides for exams too!
I loved the course! There's a lot of small assignments that add up. But they are pretty helpful in keeping the information fresh in your mind. Theres 5 MC midterms (lowest score is dropped) and one final! fill out the study guides while you're going through a unit and study before and you'll be fine!
Professor Luck does a very well job of teaching his selected material. His method is amazing and effective. Not hard work just pay attention when you are doing it. The review sessions are worth it. Loved this course.
There are 5 midterms and 1 final, in which one midterm gets dropped. Beware of due dates, time management is key for this class! he assigns lots of homework all at once, though it is manageable. tests are MC and the final is super easy since he reuses the same questions from the midterms. attendance is mandatory via iclicker questions. easy points
Really great professor. The lectures are incredibly interesting and the homework he assigns is very helpful, since it allows you to study for the test simultaneously. He has a lot of quizzes, but they are very easy and are kind of like little study tools. I wish more classes used this hybrid quiz heavy format!
He is absolutely amazing! It is a ton of work just because it's a hybrid class, BUT the way the class is structured just doing all the work helps you retain all the information. there are a lot of online quizzes, a ton of hw and five midterms and a final but i think if you put in the work its worth it. He provides all the tools you need to succeed.
This "hybrid" class consists of one lecture a week and a discussion. A lot of reading and quizzes for every few subchapters in addition to watching lecture videos and quizzes on those. Five midterms and a final which cover a lot of material. Would recommend the regular PSC1 class over the hybrid.
The hybrid class has quizzes due every other day, but if you watch the lecture videos with captions and 2x speed it doesn't take more than 30 minutes to do. The textbook reading quizzes you can do until you get 100%. Tests are easy and straightforward but are every other week, only annoying thing is mandatory attendance in discussion and lecture.
Very passionate and engaging lecturer. Hybrid course forces you to stick to a schedule of work spread out during the week- I genuinely learned from this class because of it, but it isn't for everyone. Midterms are very easy if you do the work. Discussion sections are nap worthy but attendance is taken (and in live lectures) via clicker questions.
An amazing professor. Although he has a lot of homework assignments, they're very interesting to do. Watching the lectures and taking quizzes on them afterwards really helps you learn. The class is an easy A as long as you stay on top of your work and make flashcards to memorize the key concepts. His study guides are extremely helpful as well!
Professor Luck is very passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are very interesting and engaging. There is a lot of homework, due almost every other day, but his exams are all reflective of the reading material and relatively easy if you actually read the textbook and pay attention in lectures and discussion.
He is a really good professor. This course needs a lot of work. But I love him!
enthusiastic professor. Stay on top of the readings and homework and go to discussion and you'll do fine.
This class was awesome and I really enjoyed the online aspect of it! The hybrid course really helps you continuously learn the material rather than cram last second. I would highly recommend this class.
Dr. Luck is a good professor. PSC100Y is a hybrid course and it's A LOT of work. There is homework nearly every day, which is a combination of readings and multiple quizzes. There are five exams and a final; exam five and the final are taken on the same day. Class meets once per week. Overall, I learned a lot and would take another class with Dr. L
Lecture videos are interesting and the professor is very engaging.
BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD!!! Prof Luck was an incredible and engaging lecturer and made going to class doable for an 8 am. You will get an A in this class if you take notes on the online lectures and follow his study guides for the midterms. I loved this class! Make sure to take notes on the online lectures or you will not do well.
There are many online quizzes and there are five midterms. The midterms are only 28 questions and are pretty easy if you took good notes and study using the study guide. You will do A TON of work for this class and I feel I dedicated about 50% of my time studying in this class (out of three classes). Overall, really informative and interesting!
Professor Luck is a very fair professor. The material is straight forward and an A is very doable if you study. His lectures are super interesting. His tests take a lot of information from the lectures and not so much from the book, so if you have to choose between the two, study his lectures. Overall I really enjoyed his class.
Prof. Luck is amazing! I took his hybrid class and yes, there are alot of InQuizitives, but he provides study guides. There are 5 midterms and 1 final. He drops the lowest quiz grade, lowest midterm, and lowest InQuizitive. Class is fun and the material is great! If you interested in psych, I highly recommend his class. He didn't round my 89.55%.
I took the hybrid class and yes there was many assignments but they were all easy as long as you did the reading. Also, it helped insure that the class wasnt so test heavy. Overall, the tests were generally easy as well as long as you studied the study guide.
The hybrid class takes some getting used to, but is overall effective. Dr. Luck is a very conscientious and organized professors. His online lectures are made very well and easy to follow along. He is very knowledgable and explains the concepts well. It was a tad annoying being required to go to lecture and discussion for clicker questions.
The lecture is funny but not mandatory. You must get ready to read a lot in order to get good grade. The class material is interesting and related to life. The discussion is mandatory. I got 5 midterm in a quarter..... Be ready to prepare tests...... However, I learned a lot from this class. I encourage people who are interested in PSC to take it.
Professor Luck is honestly such a great Psychology teacher. He is really enthusiastic about the material and the online lectures are extremely easy to follow since his voice is so soothing to listen to, unlike other teachers with hybrid courses. Professor Luck was the reason I decided to switch to Psychology because he makes the class so engaging!
I LOVE Professor Luck! He is the reason why Im interested in changing to Psych! Yes, there are MANY online assignments and quizzes (at least 2 every other day), but lectures were so interesting and engaging! Exams are pretty easy if you follow along with lectures. Also, theres a midterm every other week (total of 5).
hes so nice!! loved the class, very interesting material. however, the online version makes it way harder: lots of quizzes, midterms and lectures to listen to. don't slack off because you'll be very behind.
took the PSY 001Y class, it was fairly easy, but it does feel like a lot first. He's very attentive at answering questions
lots of homework and canvas quizzes but its like built in studying. He is a really good teacher, really enthusiastic and really helpful!! 10/10 loved this class!!!
It was an honor having Luck as one of my first Professors during the fall quarter. Professor Luck is so passionate about what he teaches and it really shows, he is also extremely approachable which is a big plus. My TA, Ryan, was also very intuitive and helpful during office hours. Overall a memorable class, I 100% recommend.
Be weary that you must do 6 hours of research or do 3 research papers to get credit for the class. Professor Luck has 5 midterms and a final. Homework is around 30 min per day depending on how you manage it. There are lots of quizzes and questions in order to retain information, but still helps to make flashcards
I loved this class! Professor Luck had engaging and entertaining lectures both online and in person. While there are a lot of quizzes and midterms, if you do the work and actually focus on it you'll pass easily. I learned a lot, and hope to take more classes with Luck!
The online lectures he does are pretty lengthy, but very helpful. Watch these lecture and you will definitely pass.
Professor Luck is amazing! PSC1Y was structured very well and was easy as long as you stuck to the schedule he made for the class. I know that a lot of students didn't like the class because they thought that it was a lot of work, but as long as you don't fall behind you will be fine. I highly recommend this class!!
A test every week and tons of hw but interesting subject. Tons of studying and drops a couple tests. Quizzes are often.
This class was really entertaining and fair. I had to take it as a prereq and it made me really like phycology. There are prerecorded lectures and quizzes every Monday, Wednesday, Friday which have to be done by those days. You basically have to do a little each day which spreads it out nicely. I'm not a psych person and I got an A, pretty easy.
Online assignments where you watch vids (average of 4 or so mins per vid) then do small quizzes after (can go back to vids). Can go a bit ahead until next videos unlock. Fairly easy bur recc writing notes as you watch vids. Discussions are also no problem. Prof. Luck is nice and p chill. Lil' sense of humor but same format vids can get dry.
There are lecture videos and quizzes posted every other day that are due. Takes about one hour per section if you want to take notes. There are 5 midterms and a final. Midterms are relatively easy if you pay attention to the videos and the big concepts. Can be a lot of work at the start but if you stay on top of it, you'll do good.
Great professor. Easy class, does take a little work though. He clearly wants you to succeed. His lectures are fun and don't get boring. The little quizzes at the end of every section are very helpful. Loved this class and I would definitely take him again. Lowest test grade get dropped and same w discussion sections. Great class over all!
I thought this class was taught really well. There were multiple weekly video lectures and quizzes, but they weren't too difficult. I learned that if you use the study guide to take notes, they're much more useful. The big assignments were 5 Unit Tests and the final. He also drops your lowest 6 quizzes and your lowest test (excluding the final).
Absolutely loved and enjoyed every second of his lectures! You can tell he's genuinely excited to teach this course and he also uses real-life examples to make a connection to some lectures. He also drops the lowest unit test and a couple of assignments so the class is an easy pass, just don't forget to check the syllabus for the assignment dates.
I really enjoyed his class. His hybrid class is a lot of work but as long as you put in the work you will do good on the exams. He is very caring and sweet but does not curve anything.
overall great professor but since the class is hybrid, theres way too much hw but can be managed. class is enjoyable if u put in the work, professor is engaging and passionate. attendance is mandatory bc it counts as 5 points per lecture+discussion. but he drops 2 lowest lecture grades, lowest 2 hw grades, and 1 lowest exam grade- helped a lot.
He shows a genuine passion in his job and lectures very well. His workload is a lot as there are multiple lectures and quizzes you have to watch on top of his lectures and discussions. His grading is pretty fair as he drops 5 of the lowest assignments and 1 midterm. He is engaging and fun to learn from. I have learned a lot from this professor.
Professor Luck is one of the best instructors I have ever met at UCDavis. You will learn a lot from his introductory psychology course. Every new student who majors in psychology should try his class. Though it's "hard" to get an A, you will be well prepared for the upper-division course.
The class is structured in a way for you to succeed and actually learn but it is very time consuming since it's hybrid course. As long as you watch all the video lectures and do the assigned readings, you should be good to go when it comes to the tests (there's one every other week).
Well organized and straightforward format. The online lectures are time-consuming but not difficult. We were allowed a double-sided sheet of notes for the multiple-choice exams, and several assignments are dropped at the end. The in-person discussions and lectures were fun and interesting too. Definitely recommend!
Prof Luck is amazing for PSC 001Y! Definitely would recommend taking this class. I've never taken a psych class prior to this and this made me really like psychology. Only thing to look out for is the time consuming hw. First hybrid class I've thoroughly enjoyed, shouts out to the TA's and Luck himself, fantastic people.
Such a great professor - he is so passionate about what he teaches. There is quite a bit of work to do for this class since it is a hybrid class, but all if it is super interesting and really prepares you for tests and the final. Tests are all multiple choice and super straight forward. Take this class!!
Amazing Professor! Really passionate about what he teaches, exams every other week (which are easy). Lots of 5 minute lecture videos every week with a few questions attached, so be sure to stay on top of your work. I highly recommend him, don't let the 3.8 review scare you!
Lots of quizzes and midterms. Review his review quizzes before midterms & make sure you really understand why the correct answers are the right answers. Don't spend alot of time memorizing the definitions of terms, rather understand the relations between terms and how the experiments he talks about relates to them
Professor Luck was very helpful and he really wanted all his students to do well. He was available for office hours. The lectures were interesting and the course was made to allow students to learn the material well.
Professor Luck is a wonderful professor. I will admit, he does assign quite a bit of material but he's quite understanding and was willing to make slight accommodations. Personally, I thought it was manageable! The material was also extremely interesting! The discussions forced you to be involved and it helped to retain the information.
5 unit exams with the lowest score dropped + a final, all worth 60% of your grade. there is a bit of work, but it's structured in a way that if you do all of the work you're essentially on track for an a and it's all quite interesting!
Prof. Luck was an amazing professor! Really interesting lectures and just enough work. Sometimes it felt like a lot of work but never an overwhelming amount. 5 unit exams + a final (all MC). He drops your lowest test score and some of your low quiz/assignment scores. I really enjoyed this class and recommend it as a GE everyone should take!
Prof. Luck is one of my favorite professors at Davis. Amazing lectures and really cares about his students learning and retaining the material he teaches. You will not be disappointed taking his PSC 1 class.
Probably one of the best professors. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. His course is set where if you do all the work, you're set for the tests. He lets you use a sheet of notes for exams; however, I never ended up using mine because his course structure was set up so well that I did not even have to study much.
Luck is a great professor, the course is literally designed based off of psychological principles for you to succeed. Go into his office hours and it's clear he cares about his students and their success. Definitely recommend his course to anyone interested in psychology!
His lectures are awesome. There's a lot of work to do in the class, but he makes it easy. He explains everything very clearly and you can look at the transcripts of the YouTube videos if they go too fast. Allows us to use a page of notes on the exam, and has awesome review videos. Nice guy, and available via email.
I think the prof seems pretty nice, but gives out lots of assignments. I spent more time working on his work compared to my math class personally. Lots of 3-5 min video lecture and not a lot of reading at all. Prof Luck seems to place his class' focus a lot on experimental design rather than general psy topics.
He had a lot of homework and the questions were much more difficult than usual. He talks more about neurology than psychology. The content of his videos is also difficult to understand. It is suggested to choose another teacher's PSC1 instead of his PSC1Y.
This professor had the right idea but the wrong execution. His assignments are relatively easy but it's just too much work for 10 weeks. Many say that his assignments take about 30 minutes, however, if you take notes (which is recommended for retention) then it can take up to two to three hours. I recommend this class only if you have enough time.
There are 5 unit exams stretched throughout the quarter and Luck drops the lowest scores for the lecture assignments, discussion assignments, and finally the unit exams. Personally, this class dominated most of my time and I dread it. My only complaint would be the amount of time it had consumed - assignments were doable but overbearing.

GREAT professor! He breaks Psych 1 down into short, easy-to-understand segments. It's definitely a sit down and do the work, and you will succeed type of class. No trick questions or unreasonable expectations. He's also reachable by email. If you email him, he will respond, even though there was 200 people in the lecture.
Loved Prof. Luck! His lectures were very interesting never boring to me. His tests were exactly what we learned. He provides a study guide which is exactly like the test and a double sided single paged cheat sheet per test. If you stay on top of the heavy hw, you'll do great in the class. He's passionate about Psychology and his students.
In addition to being a researcher, he's an excellent teacher! Not all of the researching professors at Davis care about effective pedagogy, but Professor Luck does. Check out his CV posted onthe Mind and Brain center page. This guy is smart and has a lot to offer. Take him!
Because this was a hybrid class, there was a LOT of online video lectures with quizzes. However, I found the videos to be too time-consuming. Instead, I downloaded the slides and read them instead of actually watching the whole video. Overall, the class was very easy because we were allowed a one-page notes sheet on every test.
I LOVE pro. Luck! He is very organized in lecture and the materials are very interesting. He designs his course so that every one can get an A if you study.
Prof Luck is a G. He thoroughly thought out the design of this class in the student's best interest. There are 55-ish quizzes online that make up 20% of your grade, but they are light work if you are attentive, also 6 lowest are dropped. You'll have 5 unit tests & 1 is dropped. I recommend this class. Mr. Luck is a great guy with a sense of humor.
Love Professor Luck! The course is designed to help you succeed. One page of notes is allowed for each unit test and none of the questions are tricky/unexpected + the lowest test score is dropped. You will get a good grade if you are able to manage your time wisely
LOTS of homework! Manage your time wisely and take notes during online lectures. It's not hard to get an A! The tests are extremely fair and generally pretty easy. 5 unit tests and a final in the test category worth 70%. Lecture and discussion attendance are mandatory. Amazing professor, you can tell he genuinely enjoys what he does and teaches!
The easiest course I have ever taken. Luck is the professor you want if you want to get a free A and learn important and practical information.
Loved Professor Luck! Very, very fair, generous, and made the class easy and enjoyable!! I wish every professor was like him, I highly recommend.
In all honesty I absolutely loved this guy, but I finished the quarter with an 89.97% and he would not give me .03% for a 90. He was a great teacher and overall great guy in general, but steve will not help you grade whatsoever.
Such an amazing hybrid class. Most content is learned through videos that you watch throughout the week and take quizzes. Make sure you pace yourself or you may fall behind on the assignments because they can take a while to complete, but they are all relatively easy. Prof Luck is a caring teacher and his lectures are easy to understand.
Super easy class as long as you stay caught up on the assignments in canvas. Looks like a lot but most of it is pretty simple, watching recorded videos and answering quiz questions at the end.
Honestly one of the easiest GE classes you could take. Online homework every Mon, Wed, and Fri which is just lecture videos followed by quizzes. Allows 1 page front and back cheat sheets on all MT and Final. One midterm dropped, a few HW dropped. Have to take part in 6 hours of studies throughout the quarter (very easy).
Loved this class! It's a lot of workload at your own pace, but you get deducted points for late work. It's mostly short lecture videos, quizzes, and unit exams. Some hw and the lowest exam are dropped. For exams, you can have one cheat sheet (front and back). Very charming professor and one of the easiest classes I've ever taken.
Professor Luck is a fantastic professor, I had PSC1Y in the fall of 2022 with him and he did a great job of communicating with the entire class at the start so that we would know what to expect.
If you are interested in psychology, but have a super busy schedule, his class might not be a very good choice for you. He gave too much work. But the way he teach is truly amazing. But the workload is a bit too much. (Some questions on quiz/exam might be confusing, think twice b4 you submit ur answer)
Definitely a lot of online lectures and homework to complete each week, but if you take good notes to later convert into a cheat sheet, you will do absolutely fine. One double-sided cheat sheet for every exam, 5 exams (1 per unit) plus the final exam. If you need/want to take psych, I would definitely recommend Prof. Luck.
Such a great professor! So funny and lectures were very engaging. A lot of independent work if you take 1Y. Everything is organized very well. Live lectures and discussions are mandatory, honestly for your own good I think, as I found them very helpful. Take good notes and you'll do just fine. Unit tests weren't too difficult.
Prof. Luck was such a kind, understanding instructor! Course was a mix of in-person work (one lecture/ discussion a week) and short, online video lectures/ quizzes. The structure of this course was great and made it easy to retain information. Unit exams are easy to study for because of the provided study guides and review sessions held by TAs.
Super kind professor, always willing to answer student questions and honestly just like a really great guy. It is a lot of homework but the good news is the class is so large you'll usually know a few people taking that class with you so you can study together. Exams are easy IF you study. Attendance mandatory but you can miss a few. 100% recommend
Very little in terms of live lectures, however the online lectures and quiz system was very helpful and helped me score really well, but this system will not work for everyone.
Clear expectations of what he expects from students. Very lecture heavy class which is fair given that its an asynchronous class but man there are ALOT of lectures. Lets you use cheat sheets for all unit tests and the tests are pretty much straightforward. Not too bad in terms of difficulty but just requires a lot of time to finish.
This class is well set up. The online modules are easy to funny and very informative. They are time consuming however they are set up in a way that ensures success on tests. There are 5 unit tests, weekly online quizzes, and a final test. The lowest unit test grade is dropped. Definitely take this class!
The class had online lectures with embedded quizzes. You get a cheat sheet for the tests and final. Professor is very good at lecturing and was very engaging. The content was easy to remember because of the quizzes. The discussion is mandatory and is very helpful with learning the concepts covered in the lectures. Overall a very fun class!
Great engaging professor, but the online lectures were a bit overwhelming at times. Too much work if taken as a GE class, but I enjoyed the material. The quizzing during online lectures helped a lot with the exams, which comprised of 5 unit tests and a final exam. In-person lectures were once every other week, with the other times being quizzes.
Amazing professor. He was willing to accommodate to his student's needs and was accessible outside of class (literally). Stay on top of your work and you will do fine in the class.
Amazing way to teach. he uses online videos he makes and has canvas questions on them that are easy to follow along. lectures and discussions could be more exciting but they are both about 50 min 3x a week.
luck was a great professor and a fair grader. however, there were too many assignments. it was all busy work. this course is very easy to drown in because of the workload. only take him if you have enough time to dedicate to this course because it dominated all of my time.
I loved Prof. Luck's psych class! It was an amazing class and easiest of all classes I took. There are 5 unit test and 1 final test, all mcqs and were straight to the point. All the material was from lecture and online videos. But be prepared there are several videos posted on canvas and they are graded quizzes. Overall, I loved the class!
Prof Luck is so sweet and energetic. The course is broken down into manageable online video lectures and quizzes. There were tests every other week for each unit: all multiple choice and pretty easy in my book. I would recommend checking out the PSC1Y learning center to get extra in-person help and see what you specifically got wrong on tests.
Probably the best professor I have ever met in UC Davis. His class not only teach you about psychology, but also the standard and method to be a good student, a good researcher and a good person. Clear course structure and reasonable grading policy. Recommended to every freshmen, I'm regretting that I took his class near graduation.
Awesome Professor! Really down to earth kinda guy, and truly wants the best for his students. He's really passionate about Psych, and makes the topics interesting and engaging. There is quite a lot of homework, but he makes it easy to manage. Would definitely recommend for GE credits!
Light work, lectures and quizzes are very efficient! It's amazing to have such a professor at UC Davis!
Light work, lectures and quizzes are very efficient! It's amazing to have such a professor!
Professor Luck's psych class was an engaging and manageable course. The online lectures with embedded quizzes really helped me stay on top of the content. I also found the Unstuck AI platform useful for study prep alongside the provided cheat sheets. Overall, a great class!
This class is hybrid and you do have to devote quite a bit of time to the online lectures if you plan on taking notes (which you should, it helps to keep the information organized when it comes time for exams). This class is interesting, and the exams aren't difficult. You're allowed to bring a reference sheet with whatever you want for exams.
he's a really approachable dude and genuinely wants students to do well, sooo many resources for this class. super interesting class over all and the topics are all covered very very well. you get a cheat sheet for tests and he does them every two weeks. he drops a bunch of stuff at the quarter, the class is literally designed for you to succeed
very good psych professor, do the short quizzes and use the cheat sheet and its an easy class
Super understanding (I was 2 hours late for my midterm and he let me take it and gave me full points anyways). Super easy to approach. Really cares about his students. Lots of little assignments (participation graded), but drops lots of lowest scores. Lots of studying assistance available. Responds super quick to emails. one test every other week.
If you're looking for an easy GE with minimal work, this may not be the best choice. I've spent about 3-6 hours every other day doing the lecture quizzes and my own notes, so it was pretty time consuming for me. Prof Luck is very enthusiastic and truly believes in the students, which makes all the effort feel more justified. Just lock in fr
Prof Luck is a great lecturer and can be very detailed, which is helpful given that there are graded quizzes at the end of every online lecture. There were typically anywhere from 3-10 lecture sets and textbook quizzes per week. There were tests every 2 weeks that were worth 70% of your grade. The final has no study guide, but is pretty reasonable.
Prof. Luck is the most passionate and knowledgeable prof. I have had at Davis, and it was an honor to learn psychology from him. I won't lie, the online lectures and quizzes are extremely time consuming (10-20 videos due mon, wed, fri) and having exams every 2 weeks was annoying but having a cheat sheet and the constant quizzes helped me succeed!
It's a test heavy class but easy tests. Video lectures take time tho. Easy but time consuming class. Topics are very interesting.
Professor Luck is one of those professors that clearly loves what he does. He has engaging lectures and is quick to respond to emails. Overall, he is a great professor, 10/10 would take again.
By far one of the best professors at UCD. His class was amazing. He has very clear assignments all of which are designed to help you do well on the 5 unit tests and final. If you do the assignments you will have no difficulty at all with the tests, he allows a piece of paper for each, and if you do well on the first 4 tests you may skip the 5th.
Dr. Luck made lectures fun and interactive, and was very caring overall. Video lectures were very time consuming, and most unit test material came from there. Unit tests were also every other week, so be prepared. Dr. Luck's organization of the class made things very clear and detailed, and overall the class was a fun experience.
I'm not a big fan of hybrid but it was a lot of work. Long-ish yt vids and quizzes that counted toward the grade after. The tests were a bit hard and maybe it's just my learning style but I never really grasped how to get the content. You get a cheat sheet tho so its nice. (Took Fall quarter)
Favorite course/prof I've had at Davis. Graded by in class participating (iClicker) 5 midterms (1 every 2 weeks), a final, and weekly quizzes. The remote lectures can be time consuming but take good notes and it's an easy A. Exams are 25 questions & not difficult as long as you understand the general concepts and can apply them. I recommend!
So many videos to watch and do homework for, this is an online self taught class. He rarely had in person lecture, when he did it was nice but it was like twice the whole quarter. The videos and assignments build up, and I found it taking up most my time.
Professor Luck is the reason I chose a major in psychology. His class and lectures were so entertaining, and they were structured really well. You can tell he really enjoys teaching and is passionate about the material. Definitely take him!
There's multiple videos with online open-note quizzes each week. You might be tempted to skip the videos and just use quizlet to answer the quiz questions but actually taking notes (while time consuming) will pay off when you have to make your full-sized double-sided cheat sheet
Had a flipped classroom teaching style, which was convenient as there was only one in-person lecture a week. His videos were interesting and made it fun to learn. Exams weren't too hard!
