Professor is disrespectful to students. Doesn't teach to help the students learn. Doesn't have slides or notes, not allowed to have book in class to follow along. Was never available during office hours, brushed off when requested help outside of office hours. Lectures were not clear, didn't know what to expect on each test. HORRIBLE!!!!!
Steve is very smart. He encourages questions and makes sure to address any before moving on. He was always very accommodating to meetings (schedule appointments), and was very clear in what was expected. Lots of people in class complained, but they also didn't study the material. Bio is hard- be willing to study!!! Good teacher!
Lectures and book are not sufficient to pass his class. He purposely words questions that have multiple right answers. He often fails to answer his own questions correctly. He can become hostile if you question him. I received A’s in botany, zoology, cell biology, and microbiology. And this one is too hard to pass? His drop rate is over 50%. Hmmmm.
Steve is a great teacher. He was always available, on time, prepared, and more than happy to elaborate for questions. Has a 'no text' policy during class (not phones) saying leave your book at home so you focus on what he's saying during lecture. After I got a 69% on my first test- I changed my study habits and got A's on all the rest. Awesome prof
Steve is a really smart professor, however he is an extremely difficult tester. I have invested countless hours studying in his class and have done pretty well so if you plan on taking him make sure you invest the time in studying and basically knowing the material like the back of your hand. Recommend using the Mastering Biology for test study.
Always available for questions. Tests are really hard, but it helps you use reasoning skills. Uses a test bank that has had errors, but he accepts challanges to the test and will throw out questions if you can articulate why. Strick on homework assignments and quiz due dates. Enjoyed taking his lecture!
I thought Steve was very clear and more than willing to answer questions or elaborate. NOT hostile (the one student who wrote that comment must have really pissed him off). I wish he was teaching A & P, I'd take his class or lab.
I had Steve for lab, he's a great professor, always willing to help and he knows the material well and I would recommend him for a teacher for both lab and lecture.
Super likable, smart, and funny. But his tests are some of the hardest I've ever taken and you are CONSTANTLY doing something for this class, whether studying for his tests (which are every other week) writing his huge term paper, or studying his guided questions he uses for lecture. Exhausting class! You have to WORK SO HARD for an A!
Lecture information was rarely used for exams. The focal points of the texts authors were rarely discussed. The student must choose the MOST correct answer on exams answers all answers are nearly identical. I do not feel that I am prepared for BIOL-202 after taking this class.
Steve is VERY smart, but not all smart people should be teachers. I found him to be witty and excited to teach the material but it still was very hard to understand what he was looking for on tests. His short answer questions on a test can easily make or break an overall test score. It's hard to gauge what he was looking for.
He really knows his stuff. His exams are just ridiculous really, no matter how many times you re read the chapters and additional material...The questions just seem confusing. Horrible Wording on assignments and exams.
very hard! doesn't accurately teach information on tests! it was AWEFUL! he is condescending and rude! tests are not even from his lectures! better chance passing studying something online!
His tests do not cover any of the material that he teaches not to mention the tests were not worded in a way for students to understand. He was unwilling to help and even a little degrading. I personally would never take a class that he taught ever again and I make sure to warn everyone who mentions an interest in having his as a teacher
Steve was helpful and available during his office hours. I studied with mastering biology and attend class and thought his tests were easy; they just require critical thinking. Bio 201 and 202 are hard classes but Steve helped me understand them better. Be prepared to study and attend class for an A. I would recommend this prof.
Steve is very knowledgeable and compassionate about what he does; I had zero passion in any science and now I don’t. His test are difficult but just require critical thinking. Quizzes are online that can be taken multiple times and throughout semester. This class is not an easy A, but passing this class is not impossible. Completely worth it.
You have to read the textbook ahead of time and come to class with guided questions filled out. He then randomly calls on students -- you lose participation points if you're absent or can't answer the questions. Exams are tough with short-essay questions worth many points, and he makes you write a huge term paper worth over 25% of your total grade.
Others weren't kidding: his exams are crazy! I only averaged 80% on them, with one low `C' and one high `D' grade, but he assigns these little online quizzes with unlimited attempts that boost your grade up a bit. He's a very fair grader when it comes to lab and that big term paper though, so that can boost you up a whole letter grade right there.
A lot of my classmates found the tests very difficult. It was hard for me as well but everything on the test was covered during class. He would also stay 10-20 minutes after ever class session to answer any questions the student had, to the best of his knowledge.
does not care for students.
He's really not as bad as the first day appears. His test are difficult but require critical thinking. This class is not an easy A, but passing is not impossible. He's there anytime for office hours, or apt. Make a study group; we had the highest grades on each test. Take the quiz, read the chapter + chapter summary, guided Q's and you'll pass
He's a pretty cool guy. Tests are tough, and you will definitely have to work for a good grade. Don't be intimidated by him - he's very approachable, understanding, and actually pretty funny. Study with friends if you want to pass. Do not cram for his exams. He asks you to think critically. He is very helpful if you have questions during a test.
Steve is a cool guy and is totally available during office hours for help. This is a class that requires studying outside of class, though and he expects that. It is definitely recommended to read the chapters prior to class. In 202, your attendance is reflected in your grade. Unlimited Blackboard quizzes are huge for grade cushion and test prep.
I've taken my share of biology classes and have never struggled with one the way I did in his 201 class. His instruction did not reflect the structure of his tests and they contained a lot of questions that he never explained the answer to. He was sometimes derogatory to students and I only felt comfortable because I had experience in the subject.
Just knowing the information in the textbook is not enough. You must be able to apply the abstract ideas to plausible examples as this is how the tests will be worded.
Steve's teaching style is great for the student who reads the textbook and comes to class ready to discuss the lessons. His lectures are best with interaction. If the class isn't lively, it's ok but you'll get more if you do your part in studying and are ready to think critically. Start the paper early in the term! Don't wait!
Steves class was a challenge. It isn't an easy A but he does give you the materials needed for an A. Everyone says his tests are hard but they really aren't, he just asks the material in a different way. He expect you to APPLY the material not just memorize it. He was a great teacher and is so passionate about what he does. I would recommend Steve.
He is good, honest and holds you to a standard of excellence.
Amazing smart professor
Honestly this class was ridiculous. There were only two students that may have succeeded in this class. They were the ones that sat up front and over analyzed everything. Personally, I was lost most of the time and I sat in the second row. I only missed two days of class and I failed almost every test. This proffessor says it's normal to fail test.
This is not a lecture hall. This is a discussion hall. You have to read the book before class. He will give you an outline of questions that he may ask you but will ask you other questions not listed and expect you to answer without looking at the book. Used a different version then the class, so all his examples he said were in the book- weren't.
He is a really good professor when it comes to discussing the material, rather than just throwing it at a wall and hoping it sticks. He is also willing to answer any questions you might have. In addition to this professor, he is really good about getting assignments graded within a week.
Steve is a really good teacher. Just like anything in life i you participate and have a good time, it will BE a good time. He is an amazing professor and cares about his teaching as he has a doctorate and is really intelligent. He's funny and helpful and lets you retake quizzes as many times as you want until the end of the semester!
Not as hard as anticipated. I would have taken him for 202, but he is a hypocrite and doesn't care about his students. My grade is a reflection of his inability to do what he said he would do (for the whole class) and not my intelligence. If you don't care about your grade it is an easy C.
I found that his lectures were awesome. However, his tests did not match up with what he teaches. If you are familiar with EasyNoteCards, most of his quizzes and tests align with them. He can be disrespectful at times and many, many students quit due to his style. Not willing to alter style and does not review tests at all. Relies on tutors.
Steve is a phenomenal teacher. However, at times it seemed like he was mailing in the lab portion of the course. Which makes it an easy A but still frustrating since hes an amazing resource when hes on top of his game.
Show up. Pay attention. Use common sense. Don't expect to be able to skate through anything. He's an amazing teacher but you have to be an amazing student. His teaching methods are not for everyone so if you need someone to lay everything out and hold your hand he isn't the teacher for you.
All tests were 30 minute essays not reviewed in class and given an average "D" grade. When questioned about this practice, he said: "You may take this class elsewhere if you don't like the way I do things." I attempted to meet with him outside of class to review my test and he was not available. He was the worst professor I've ever had!
Steve is not bad. He is very clear in his expectations and is fair when it comes to participation points. He always offers help. You will have to read before class as class is a discussion, but it's never more than half an hour of hw before hand. Just don't be shy and you will be fine.
He is super awesome. Definitely one of the best professors that I have ever had. He knows his stuff. He is super great. I would recommend him to anyone. Just be prepared to read and you will do great.
I took this biology class online and he was very hard to reach and was not willing to help students understand the material. I felt helpless going through this class and I do not recommend it. This was an awful experience and this class ruined my perfect GPA. I have never worked so hard for a class and got such bad of test scores.
Just reading wont cut it. You must FULLY be able to understand the concepts and apply them to non-textbook situations. Limited # of questions on the tests, which makes missing 1 question very costly. Excellent lecturer, willing to help, but teaches like hes at a university and its a 400 level class. DO NOT TAKE 111 FROM HIM UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED!
I took this online over the summer and have never been more disappointed in a class/professor. His exams were NOTHING like the material in his slide shows or his "quizzes" aka quizlet questions. He was hard to get a hold of, and when a response was given back it was not helpful. I have heard he is great during the actual school year in class though
Dr. Lysne is amazing! You are required to have read the chapter and taken notes prior to class then he guides a conversation. You do have to participate and are graded on that, but it is easy points to make up for tough tests. Tests are tough, not much recall more applications, but I have retained the info better than most classes.
Worst professor don't take him! His exams are ridiculous for an INTRO biology class, has absolutely nothing to do with his notes & he does nothing to help prepare you for them or let you know what they will be like, doesn't seem like he wants his students to succeed. I am an A student in every science class but this one. Very disappointed w/ him.
READING THE TEXT BOOK WON'T BE ENOUGH TO DO WELL IN THIS CLASS! you are expected to completely understand the concept and be able to apply it. The tests are pretty difficult and mostly application based so don't expect to just the read the book and memorize stuff and think you'll do well. I WOULD AVOID TAKING HIM UNLESS YOU ARE TRUELY PREPARED.
Despite the negative connotations, I decided to give this professor a shot. Big mistake. The textbook information might as well be irrelevant because it didn't seem to correlate with the quizzes or exams. His attitude and desire to help were poor. Perhaps teaching online isn't his strong suit, I've heard he is great teaching on campus.
Each week there was a weekly quiz which you could take as many times as necessary to get 100. As well, as a journal entry on the current chapter. Midterms and finals were tough, but if you study the chapter and understand the concept- not just the text, then you'll do fine. Lazy students & poor studying habits will fail you.
I took Bio 111 with Dr. Lysne over the summer. His online course is pretty self explanatory: Quizzes weekly, journal reflections weekly, 3 exams and 1 cumulative final. In order for me to get and A, I read each chapter twice, did the concept checks, reviewed his voice-thread lectures. To me, the final was significantly harder than the 3 exams.
Dr. Lysne's tests are given to test your PhD level knowledge, not community college Biology 1. They are very subjective. He doesn't give feedback or show what you missed. I finished with 89.9% and got a B. When I tried to contact him to at least see what I missed, he didn't bother answering my email. Also, doesn't give any study guides.
I really enjoyed Biology 111 & 112 from Dr. Lysne. He is a really nice guy he just teaches at a harder level than most are used to. This doesn't make him a bad professor it just makes it a lot more challenging. He absolutely can tell if you aren't trying, and he doesn't like it if you don't try. If you try hard you'll be fine! Overall very good!
Super funny, but wants his students to work hard
Dr. Lysne is a very good professor but you must read the book and participate in class. You will have weekly readings and quizzes and typical things like that. If you show an effort and participate in class then you can get through it. It's pretty difficult but you must work hard for the grade you want in his class.
Was an online class and exams were closed book and 70% of your grade depends on them. That makes things unfair for the people who actually obey the rules because those who cheat by looking at the book or googling on their phone get a better score obviously. Not a fair measure of students knowledge.
Terrible instructor. Please don't take him if you think you might run into an issue. He will not under any circumstances work with you. Due to COVID, the class is online. Blackboard is the only way to access the class. Blackboard wouldn't let me finish some assignments. I contacted CWI and they couldn't fix it. He failed all the assignments.
If you show up to lectures, do your pre reading, and take all the quizzes you are set up for success. Participation is a big part of this class. His lectures are discussion based. You either learn from this professor or learn nothing there is no in between. Overall great professor!
Even after reading the textbook and watching all of the voice thread lectures, I still nearly failed this class. His exams were confusing due to wording, and it felt like he asked questions that weren't even covered. I spent nearly 4 hours a week studying for this class and it obviously didn't work. Don't know if online made it worse than usual
Worst professor Ive ever had, I actually took this course to refresh my biology experience before applying to medical school as Im already a graduate student. There is almost zero correlation from voice thread lectures and the textbook for the exams. Many questions were based around advanced chemistry understanding which no one has taken!
The exams were really hard and most of your grade was based on that. I got a D on the final. I have never done that bad. Im a straight A student. I dont feel like I learned much at all. I think it being online ruined the class. The VoiceThread lectures never worked and didnt help. The book was my real teacher.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. His "lectures" are just reading off the pictures from the book. He doesn't go over the harder material and expects all of your knowledge to come form the book; with that being said, even the book doesn't prepare for his biochemistry level questions which you have no prior exposure to. His grading is atrocious.
Readings and voice lectures wont help you at all. This is an introductory BIO course and he wants a knowledge of BIOCHEM. He gives no feedback and is hard to get ahold of. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Took his bio111 class online and ended up dropping it! For a beginner level bio class, his class was TOUGH! If science is already your strong suit then Im sure youll be fine. The quiz/test questions were never from the book/lecture, so you could endlessly study the book and his PowerPoints and still fail his tests.
He only gave a journal and quiz every week for work. This is the one time I wished the professor would give MORE! I would read each chapter twice before a test, do the review in the book, and study my quizzes and I still wouldn't pass his tests. I was not learning anything taking this class and withdrew. Not a good learning environment.
The exams are 50% of your weighted grade! If you do bad on one exam it's over for you. The information on the exams had me thinking I read the wrong chapters because I felt like we didn't go over any of the information. Emailing him is pointless, he gives a long winded, wordy response that was just that, words with no meaning.
If you miss a quiz b/c you're hospitalized, no retakes. There is no curve or extra credit. Only take this class if you can assimilate/recall all the info from the textbook. The tests are recall of niche facts and THEN application. Questions don't relate to the broader topics. Use the book quizzes to study. Easier questions are pulled from there.
This class was HARD! After I read the textbook and did the 2 assignments for each chapter, I spent 2 hours a day studying and barely passed the class! I'm a straight A student and this class was the most challenging class I've taken, especially for an INTRO to biology class. Emailing him was almost pointless, he put no effort into helping.
The definition of "phoning it in." Everything is canned - lectures are just reading over the slides that came with the book, quizzes and exams are comically hard because they come from a question bank he didn't write and doesn't teach to the level of, and there's no way to learn the material appropriately just by sticking to what's taught in class.
Throughout the whole course, he only made one class announcement which didn't relate to any course work. He has communicated 0 times throughout the semester, and recently I got kicked out of my exam so I emailed him and got no response, so I got a 10% on my final. The exam questions are also very random and I still got low scores despite studying.
He rips all of his quiz and exam questions from the Campbell Biology textbook. You can find all the questions and the solutions on easynotecards pretty easily. Just look for sets by user zcole2000. The notecards make for a great study resource.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I have a BS and needed this class as a prereq for my masters. I have NEVER had a professor this difficult. He is intent on nickel-and-diming student's grades. Exam information is nowhere in the book. He says he pulls from his video lectures, but they are pulled from the textbook and none of that info is on the exam.
Professor Dr.Lynse doesn't take accountability for any of his mistakes as a professor. I mentioned a way to help students succeed especially students like me with mental health issues and he gave me a reply that was like a smack in the face claiming that he only does something to help his students if its required by the department.
Extremely long lectures, with little to zero ability to actually teach the material to students in a class which is supposed to be an introduction to the subject. Much of his style of teaching is relying on PowerPoint and wording everything from the textbook itself. Overwhelming when it shouldn't have to be.
Assignments: just 1 journal and 1 quiz a week. Book is the biggest resource, use the "test your understanding" at the end of every chapter, it will save your grade. This and the weekly quizzes are where the test questions are pulled from. Difficult tests, use the voice thread lectures for basic understanding. You can tell the prof is passionate.
Unfortunately, Prof. Lysne is the worst instructor I've had at CWI. I took the online course and there's simply no way to pass for someone who learns similarly to me. I don't doubt that prof. is knowledgeable, I just don't think he does a good job TEACHHING the material. Test questions are extremely specific so studying is virtually pointless.
No personalized feedback, only what seems to be a copy-paste response that doesn't tell you what you did wrong or right. His tests are awful, he writes confusing questions + questions on topics that are not discussed in lectures. Honorlock is used for exams too, which feels like a big violation of privacy. I spent 9+ hrs/week on his class for a C
When grading is questioned, he is defensive. When asked for assistance, he is dismissive. When sent a casual email, he sent a diatribe about professionalism and demands about how emails should read. Overall, he's a blowhard with superiority complex who thinks teaching professionalism is his entitlement. Stick to biology and stay in your lane sir.
4.0 GPA /dedicated student. I worked 20hrs a week on his course with an AP Bio tutor. My tutor admitted that the teacher was unhelpful, and covered material that was WAY too advanced. On the midterm, I received one of the highest grades after studying for 3 weeks, which turned out to be a C. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Did not help me out when I needed it. Did not give the metrical or a study guid for tests. Email responses were rude.
He did not care about his students or the class, he was dismissive and not helpful at all when I asked to meet with him during office hours for extra support. Honor lock was used during exams, and if you have a bad internet connection it will kick you out of the exam and automatically submit it for you and then he will not let you take it again.
Don't take this class I thought this was an Introduction to biology, but it seems like a course you would take if biology was your major in which you already studied for two years. Professor, was dismissive and unhelpful.
He sees it as fit to attack and belittle students in his class for asking questions. Very old fashion and assumes that he is the most important person in the room at all times (in and out of class). I would avoid if possible.
This class is a difficult one. Our first test had an average of 62. It's very test heavy and there is not a lot of room to make it up. He doesn't really do any teaching, just voice lectures from 4 years ago. Make sure that you read your textbook and take notes. Take the quizzes over again and study what you missed. Or find a different professor
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! This professor is the definition of phoning it in to teach a class for a paycheck. I wish CWI would find another professor to teach this + other online bio courses he teaches. Least amount of effort put in yet expects so much of out students. If you want to actually learn the material, take another professor.
Enjoys personally attack both students and other staff if they don't form to his outdated view on education. Avoid like that plague if you are female student and if you are a male student, you better be his version of what a good old boy is. Take this class with literally any other professor.
Not a bad instructor, just a harsh grader. If you watch the video lecture slides and study from them you'll be fine. I got a C on the first exam skipping them and then Got a B and an A on the next 2 because of watching those lectures. Most of the material on the exam comes from them. 1 journal and 1 unlimited takes quiz per week. Lots of reading!
Profesor Lynse was a good professor who explained topics well and helped when needed. He did his best to ensure we understood the material if we struggled. He provided such good feedback on all assignments. I would choose him as a professor given the chance.
He is truly a brilliant professor. Because of that, it seemed difficult for him to adjust to students taking basic biology. However, he provided extra credit for each exam. You need to do well on the three exams because the final exam is extremely, extremely challenging.
By far the worst experience with a professor I have ever had. Find someone who will teach you biology that actually gives a poop about you. I am shocked the CWI department head has not reviewed his poor behavior toward students. Should retire or get canned...
he is one of the worst teachers I have ever had he does not care about his students he is just a man on a power trip because he has the power all he cares about is you emailing him the right way he doesn't care about you and he doesn't care If you learn or if you pass he is the worst teacher I have ever had
This professor is very smart and knows his material, but I would not take this course again. He will give extra credit on all exams. Quizzes and journals every week. I would study chapter 17&18 more than any other chapters. Some questions are from the book and easynotes, but some are just created by this professor. Don´t be lazy.
It's a hard class being online, the professors lectures are over 4 years hold and the lectures and textbook learning does not match the exams. Only about half of it was part of the exams.
whenever i email him he lectures me on how i should write to him in a professional way and he never gives a satisfying answer ,the quizzes and exams are so difficult , and the final exam is insane ,i watched the lectures read the textbook, my grade was 97 and my class average is 63 before the final exam,it dropped to 92.8 after im so disappointed .
What you're going to see on here is going to scare you. I took BIOL111 and BIOL112 with Dr. Lysne and he's respectful. On the chapter journal assignments he gives you "hints" about the final, but they're lies. His exams pull questions from nowhere, but study the questions in the textbook study area. There is extra credit but work hard. I'm retaking
Do not take the class if you don't want an F in your transcript. Soooo hard.
Professor Lysne shows little interest in student success. His lectures are unclear, tests confusing, and help dismissive. The course focused heavily on chemistry despite being Intro to Biology. Very dry and hands-off teaching—one of the least engaging classes at CWI.
I didn't even bother taking the final-terrible, terrible instructor who doesn't care about his students at all. These reviews are all valid. You've been warned. Re-took the class at BSU-ACED it. Pay a little extra and take it from instructors who love teaching and care about their students. Go to BSU.
He is not flexible and does not give the benefit of the doubt. If you're late on an assignment, you fail it basically. The journals are graded out of 3 and he frequently gives 2s just because you didn't go “above and beyond”. If you cheat your way through his class you still wont get an A.
At first I was very nervous for the course. With each review, me being told he was a major sexist and overall bad teacher. He gave me a bunch of feedback, he emailed me on advice to be successful. There's sometimes he is a little abrasive about what is his responsibility but he's not as bad as people make out. Class is hard. Didn't make it harder.
find another professor
Do NOT take this class. Your grade will suffer. You have to write too many journals and take a lot of quizzes, but the midterms are what really hurt your grade. The material he teaches is way above a normal undergraduate level, and it feels too advanced for this class. Just DO NOTTTTT.
