He's very fun and made a boring rock seem interesting to me. He's a GREAT teacher, very helpful and attentive even when working with 50 students at one time, and his sense of humor is a BIG plus. He really tries to help, just ASK! Also, make sure you fill out the study guides, they really help!
very cool, didn't get to go on field trips though (too cold)
Thanks Steve! Very funny guy. All tests are M.C. Make sure you know the material in-and-out. Reading the book helps much. Field trips to Mt St Helens are awesome, if you can go. I'd go to his class just for the humor aspect.
Pretty dang funny.
Steve is awesome. He is hilarious, and very knowledgable. I was very pleased that he taught my science classes, since I had to take two in my last quarter. He is just an all-around good guy.
Great personality.
funny and gneiss, extroidenarilly brilliant, caring, personal, and very knowlegable in his field. this man makes you love geology
Oh my goodness! he's the funniest teacher ever! It's like hanging out with a friend and talking about rocks and tectonic plates:) He makes it so interesting. He is a must teacher to have. He's amazing guy and creates an atmosphere of learning that is so comfortable and free. Ya...you should definitely take one of his classes. oh man i miss that guy:(
Steve is an awesome teacher and it helps that he's close to my age. I loved Geology and miss his funny comments every day. He is a major hottie because he is so funny and smart and a great family man.
He's pretty hilarious. It makes the material interesting. He's always willing to help students and walk them through materials.
He's great! I dreaded the thought of going to yet another natural science class and sleeping away the hr. due to being bored out of my mind. However, with Steve's enthusiasm and jokes, I remaind wide awake. I also loved the fact that he's a total visual guy. It really helped having tons of pictures to look at as examples rather than relying on verbal descriptions or pictures in the text book. He's Grrreat!
great teacher, emphasizes what you need to know..all multiple choice tests are kind of hard, because you have to learn it verbatim..but otherwise great class, great teacher and hot to boot!
he seemed friendly until you had a question then he would belittle you. and if you had a personal habit that bugged him he would hold it against you. I challenged my grade and would not even take a second look at it too.
The world needs more teachers like Steve. He keeps things fairly upbeat, and when you can have a good laugh in a class about rocks, you know you got something good going for you.
Steve was an awesome teacher! He made rocks a lot of fun to learn about. And our class trip to Mt. Saint Helens was just the cherry on the icing on the cake. If get the chance, take his class. You'll love it.
Best prof @ OC! No doubt about it
15 DAYS OF GLORY! LOVED this class!!! awesome prof... keeps your interest...i would def take a class from steve again!
Wonderful professor. His tests were difficult, but he was there to help with any questions. During class he lectures on the chapters; while outlining them for students. As long as you read the chapters, you shouldn't have trouble. He makes the class laugh all through the quater, he's just a fun guy. If you need Geol, take S. Macias. he ROCKS!!!
Seriously, this guy is an awesome professor. He makes geology a lot more fun and interesting than you would ever imagine. He's upbeat, has a quirky (but friendly) sense of humor, and is very good at explaining things for people who don't understand something. His class is not easy, but it's not hard either, as long as you attend and take notes.
Go to class and utilize the study guides.
Awsome teacher. Easy tests. All the info is in the notes. All you have to do is stay awake.
Okay class. Labs are extremely rushed.
This man is hilarious, and he is always willing to help students that need help. If you are having trouble and are in his class don't be afraid to ask questions!
Macis is awsome, definantly take the class, all about tsunamis and earthquakes, definantly worh it and as long as you take notes and go to class and lab, its an easy grade :)
Steve is the best geology teacher I've ever had. He is clear in his instruction, outline of his course, and is super with it. Take this course if you want to have fun, but go to class and work hard.
First off this is the funniest person i have ever met. He is quite witty in his lecture and wastes no time making fun of his students, and his own lecture. Humor aside he is still a great teacher. his tests are very hard, so take notes and use study guide big time! if you want an easy class, sorry, move on. but if you want a great class, yep.
Steve Macias is the most amazing science teacher I've ever had! He actually WANTS his students to learn and he explains everything. I was doing this class as a lab requirement, but now I love Geology. TAKE HIM HE'S AWESOME!!!
Steve is the best teacher I had at OC hands down. He is HILARIOUS. Class is basically stand up with rocks. Couldn't have been any better. He made me love geology. In class tests are very easy. He tells you everything on it on the study guide. Sometimes you might have a take home but those just take time. Take his class, you'll love it!!
One of the best classes I've taken at OC...I took this class online and I wish I had a need to take a in-class class from him. I learned so much from this class... interesting subject but lots of hands on work-most of it done in a group.
Excellent instructor! Wants you to succeed. Show up and read the text and you will have fun and learn something.
Wonderful professor. Top notch. Funny. Makes it interesting. You'll change your attitude about science professors if you take one of his classes. You want to learn. Trust me.
was this guy a great teacher? Rhymes with YES!! you will understand this then you take his class. best Prof i ever had in all my years of college. wish i could take more classes with him. you will love geology after taking this class. trust me. he makes it so much fun and hands on. tests came from the study guide exactly. great slide shows
Awesome. Funny guy, great teacher.
I took Historical geology and it was harder than I thought! But Steve is a great teacher. Super funny and nice. Doesn't force his views of evolution on the class. He would take a break at the middle of the class period and tell us something funny that happened to him. Great teacher one of the best at OC.
Great teacher. Funny guy, wants you to succeed. His study guides outline everything on the test beautifully. Also writes good letters of recommendation. I would highly recommend his class.
Macias is an awesome teacher. Geology isn't the most fun class, however Steve makes it a pure joy. He is the highlight of my day. Take one of his classes before you're done with OC.
One of the best teachers I've had. Makes learning fun, and understandable. Def take a class of his
Awesome
One of the best teachers I have had in my entire college career. Knowledgeable, energetic, with great examples. Taking notes is key to success in this class! You will learn a lot. Also, I would love to bear his children.
Steve Macias is a true story! he is the best quality professor I have ever had and I'm a senior at UW
JUST TOOK HIS GEOLOGICAL HAZARDS 155 ONLINE AWESOME ...IT GETS A LITTLE ROUGH AT TIMES SOME OF THE TESTS ARE RIDICULOUSLY LONG BUT IF YOU READ THE CHAPTER THEN MOST OF IT SHOULD COME EASY EVEN THOUGH THE TEST ARE TIMED.FINAL KINDA MERGE TOGETHER SO THAT KINDA SUCKS BUT ITS KINDA FUN DOING THE 1ST ONE. **HINT** READ CHAPTER DO TEST THEN MOVE TO NEXT
Such a fun teacher, tests were kinda tricky but he let you know what would be on it. his personality makes class worth going to. would recommend him to anyone.
Prof. Macias is the GREATEST TEACHER AT OLYMPIC COLLEGE!!! I had no interest in geology before taking the class but needed another science and he has completely changed my opinion. The classes are relaxed and he is hilarious, so learning is easy. The tests are challenging, but easy if you are taking the online class (open book tests).
He is hilarious! Super easy class as long as you read the chapters.
fun teacher. helps ypu out alot. all around nice guy that just wants you to in the end no your stuff. jst read the material and youll get it.
Fantastic. Clever, comes at the subject with irreverent humor to keep student interest - ensures students "get it" before moving on to next topic. The lynchpin to the "Life on the Edge" learning community - Dr. Seavy is missed.
I took his class for physical geology at Olympic College and he is one of the best professors I've ever had. He makes the class interesting and he's also hillarious! Excellent at answering questions and great at explaining the concepts to make them easy to understand. Great Class!
Steve is great about explaining concepts in easier-to-understand terms than what the textbook gives. Show up to labs, do the homework, and you're pretty much good to go. He seems out to help students succeed, not set them up to fail. He's also very funny in lab.
This was a very basic class and it was not hard to do the work and turn it in on time. There is a basic quiz every week and a project at the end of the term, paper OR presentation. Macias knows his stuff and is willing to help out as much as he can. Good at being available for questions.
Steve was very laid back, helpful, and funny as long as you ask for help when you need it he is more than willing to accommodate students...you need to do the required reading but it isn't hard at all and all quiz's were online...only instructor that ever gave the option of having a final or not.
two exams a week. a powerpoint project and a fat comprehensive final. lots of reading.
There was no homework assigned, however tests were extremely long and timed and repetitive. Steve was however understanding of student complaints. Final exam was something completely different from the testing of the course. Be prepared to have mini heart attacks while taking the online tests. Reading the chapters were quite uninspiring.
A class I regret taking. Had a 4.0 gpa before this class. Tests are HARD, lengthy & timed. Content must be memorized! Open book, but no time to look up. No extra credit. Steve is sarcastic (sometimes hard to tell) but fun in lab. But as a intro class the expectations were unrealistic as there wasn't time to lecture on content. Lab one day a week.
I don't know why I took this class, but I had a great time! Read the book, take the quizzes and do everything on time actually do everything before the deadline, that would be best! Funny guy, I liked his class, also the final is long but read read read! Don't try and rely on google, even though the class was mostly online. Have fun!
The class was a good one to take for an easier science credit but he takes FOREVER to get back to students through email and the CANVAS discussion boards. Overall it was an interesting class that I enjoyed taking. I would have also liked to have feedback on my final and final project that I did.
Every week their was a test that was very long and timed. At the end of the quarter their was a final (6 essay questions) and a project. Even though I didn't do that great on the weekly tests, I still got a decent grade by doing and putting in a lot of effort on the final and project.
He's a really good professor, is excited about teaching and makes geology really fun and interesting! The only problem is that it is a web-enhanced class. 80% of your grades are based off of the quizzes and exams online from the textbook readings and only 20% is from the lab which is only once a week. Other than that he is great!
I took his Geological Hazards online course and you have basically 70 questions that are tf or multiple choice. You are required to READ A LOT! the tests are hard if you don't read. No extra credit. The class is ONLY EXAMS. I wouldn't recommended this class.
Steve is hands down the best professor Ive had. Hes extremely good at breaking the material down so its simple and easy to understand. Hes enthusiastic, hilarious if you love wit and irreverence, and cares about students understanding. Class is laid back and very enjoyable thanks to his teaching style and personality. Great teacher and person.
Hands down one of the best teachers I've ever had. I decided to gear my studies towards science & Mr. Macias helped put the nail in the coffin. His class is fun, interesting and pretty simple. Read the textbook, pay attention in class & you will get an A or B easily. Also, he is the funniest teacher I have ever had. I'll always remember this class.
Favorite science prof by far. Steve rocks (no pun intended). Id say the classes are an easy A, but you do have to read the chapters. Definitely a great choice for a natural lab filler!
I did not like when someone would ask a serious question or raise their hand and he would say "What?" seemingly annoyed that you asked a question. He was all over the place jumping on counters and speaking a mile a minute which I found very distracting and hard to keep up. I read every chapter required and attended every class. Did not get an A
This was a really interesting class and his hilarious personality made it even better, plus he's really hot so that helps! You do need to read the textbook and really pay attention to the study guides he gives you for the tests.
Steve is an amazing teacher! This is the third class I've taken from him and I loved all of them! He has a great sense of humor which helps make his lectures even more enjoyable. He is always easy to get in touch with if you need any help and it doesn't hurt that he's good looking ;)
Will work with you if you are willing to try
Steve is a fantastic professor; he engages the class during lectures, is very approachable with questions, and is very upfront and clear about what is required to pass his class while making class incredibly enjoyable. Since this was a hybrid online/lab course, attendance is highly recommended if you wish to pass the lab portion of the class.
The majority of tests and quizzes are online, and pretty tough. Two quizzes and one or two tests a week, sometimes more. The book is definitely necessary. Labs aren't too bad, mainly identifying rocks and minerals. Steve is super cool, funny, and nice. Usually lets you out early, lectures aren't bad, and is more than happy to answer questions.
Amazing class I needed a mandatory natural science and could not be happier that I chose this one! He is such a great guy you have most of the work online with labs just to learn how to identify specific things in lab tests are super easy and are open note so take good notes! Looking forward to taking him next quarter for geological hazards!
I really enjoyed taking Geological Hazards online this summer. The compressed quarter was tough, but this is college. Lots of reading was necessary to pass the tests but that is to be expected.
So i took his 110 class back in 2013, fast forward to 2016 and I needed a copy of the syllabus for. Another College to get credit for his lab and he went above and beyond and got a letter signed by the dean for me on the approved material so that I could use his class to graduate. He's simply the best!
Steve is a great teacher! His love of geology and rocks (this guy really likes rocks!) is enough to make anyone excited or at least interested in it. He uses lots of humor and really cares about students and understands that his class is not the center of your life. There is homework and tests, but it should be easy if you put in effort. Fun class!
This class has weekly exams that have around 60 true/false and multiple choice questions. There was one project and one final essay exam near the end of the quarter. This class had a lot of reading and was pretty tough but as long as you read the material and study diligently, you can get a decent grade.
if you 're looking for a natural science and a really cool professor. this professor is the one to look for . his quizzes are very easy and the tests are very fair. as long as you study the study guides you shall pass with an easy A. take all of his classes if you can for natural sciences and if you want to maintain a high GPA.
I want to start off with this book is awesome! The Professor gives 2 chapters to read with an exam for each chapter, final project, and final paper. On the exams you get roughly a minute per question. In my opinion this Professor was arrogant and not helpful at all. I hope anyone taking his courses have better experiences then I. Good luck.
Mr. Macias is a pretty chill guy, he is very understanding and willing to listen. He's hilarious in class and easy to understand. The grade consists of tests and quizes taken online, which can be difficult, but if you study the chapter you'll be fine.
Best word to describe this teacher is "chill". Very laid-back and informal. However, he's simultaneously really good at teaching a sometimes confusing subject. Make sure you read you textbook, it really helped me do well on quizzes. I found personally that I couldn't just "wing it" when it came to tests. I would totally take his class again.
Total team player. This professor wants his students to pass, and wants them to have fun while they learn. He keeps lectures interesting and it's hard NOT to pay attention when he speaks!
Steve clearly loves what he does, it is evident when he talks. Make sure you read the chapters well because the tests are long and specific.
Excellent lectures; he wants you to succeed. Class was only once a week so you need to be in class. Funny and personable. His class was challenging but I did learn a lot.
Amazing science professor! Very friendly, learns your name, is like your friend. Made me feel very comfortable in class. A few tests, studying will help. A lot of online work (If you're taking a hybrid class). Work load can be a bit overwhelming at times, but catching up is easy. Definitely recommend!
I took this Professor for geology 101 with lab and he was awesome. He gave feedback in enough time. He taught me everything I needed to know about rocks and minerals. Currently taking his online Geology 155 class.
Great Professor. This was my second class in this subject with this professor. Due to it being an online class, you basically read a lot and then take tests every week. He wants you to succeed. I am not a fan of science but this class was fairly interesting and the easiest subject out of all the sciences offered at OC.
Professor Macias is great! He makes what would be a VERY boring and stiff topic a very interesting study about our ecosystems. Who knew someone could make rocks that interesting? My only complaint is that sometimes he can get pretty off-topic during his lectures. He's giddy most days and very enthusiastic, but this can sometime be distracting.
At first I wasnt interested in geology, but he made me so excited to learn about it. He shows such enthusiasm for the subject and makes the class super fun. Hes really sarcastic so watch out if you arent good at responding to sarcasm. All in all hes a super fun teacher and he has such a passion for the subject, and makes it super enjoyable.
ONLINE- Your grade is based on weekly tests/final and ONE assignment. There is no teaching, essays, assignments or discussions to help grade whatsoever. Little over one minute per question. You must find the answers to the questions, they are worded tricky and you have to follow word for word. The one assignment only helps your grade slightly.
Fun is an understatement when it comes down to Professor Macias! He is passionate about what he teaches and it shows. Would I take his class again? You breccia! you'll get this joke at the end of semester ;) Read textbook, you'll need it to complete quizzes and exams. Pay attention during lectures. It's sad summer semester was this short!
Test heavy may sound intimidating but it really is not bad. Since the class is a hybrid, you are only going in for lab once a week so having tests/quizzes (online) weekly isn't all that bad since you get a WHOLE week. Just study and you'll do fine. Steves's hilarious and kind and you will not regret taking this class, he makes it worthwhile.
Great class overall. Prof was easy to ask questions to and offered helpful advice even though the class was online. I recommend the online class and using the quizlet user Chickenandyarn's guides to study for all tests :) There are 11 tests, a project, an untimed final exam (no regular hw in this class) and the workload is not bad at all.
I took Geological Hazards online with Steve and it was a fine class. In this class, you read A LOT then take an exam after each chapter. There's no other homework other than that. At the end of the quarter, you have to do a big project and write a paper. Hit every point he asks you to include and you'll get full credit. DON'T PROCRASTINATE!!
All the tests are on quizlet. His lectures are pretty interesting and hes overall a funny instructor. Would take a course with him again.
If you like rocks he's your guy. He's somehow both laid back and feral. He let us eat rocks. Trust me, he was an experience and I would love to take another class of his. Mostly rock identification with fun mnemonics.
This class was a solid choice to fill a science credit over the summer. There were 10 tests, a final project and a final exam, and that's it. I didn't talk to the prof the entire 6 weeks, which is not a big deal as it wasn't really needed. Just stay on top of reading the chapters and there's no reason you shouldn't get an A.
Very chill, very laid-back, but very good at teaching. Was also super accommodating. Had two 20Q quizzes& one 60Q exam every week after reading every chapter. Every 3 weeks we had another exam (50Q) on top of all that. Sounds hard, but trust me, it's not. Grade was based on those tests and zoom attendance. You need the textbook. Was self-paced.
Great Geology teacher. He really made the online zoom class fun and engaging. He does require attendance at the zoom meetings, but he's really funny so the time passes quickly and you get a lot of good info. Would absolutely take any of his classes.
He's pretty great! He's super passionate about geology making his lectures fun. He loves interacting with his students and talks to you like an equal. I'm 17 and called him 'dude' and 'man' and he responded with he same energy. A great professor for in person and online classes. Everything you need to know is in your textbook, so be prepared!
Great professor. The exact tests are on quizlet. Emails back within minutes.
A very funny guy and really relatable. He grounds the subject in order for better understanding.
Very nice and chill guy. Answered emails within minutes, and is an easy grader. Class itself had a test every week, a final project, and a final "essay-styled" exam. Keep on top of the assignments and you'll be fine.
A lot of memorization and bookwork, but he really likes rocks and is fun to listen to in lecture.
He May be great for some people but he is a bit erratic for my taste. Ball of energy during lab lectures, spastic and constantly trying and failing to get a laugh from students. Incredibly terse and unhelpful over email with lots of grammatical errors. minimal syllabus, light lectures, rely mostly on textbook. beginning of semester was a cluster.
He is a great professor at first the work seems alarming but you get used to it. 10/10 would reccomend.
The only assignments have been exams, about 80 questions and like 1.5hrs to complete it but the entire exam is normally on Quizlet. Easy class
During Fall 2022 I had went through a LOT! Therefore, I had missed quite a few classes during the term. However, Steve has always had my back! Whenever I came back the following week he would keep me updated on where we are at. He's truly understanding and ALWAYS wants what's best for you! That is what you call a real teacher!!
Class is made up of exams, but is information straight from the textbook or occasional short video. While an easy class, it was very informational and I learned a lot! The final consists of some essay-style questions and a geologic hazards project, and is an fair grader if you put the effort in. No complaints; would love another course with him!
The class was almost too easy until finals, but I enjoyed it because the open-note exams made sense and followed what we learned. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE ON FINALS! I waited until the last week to complete mine and I was miserable, please start working on your final project and exam/essay as soon as possible so finals aren't too stressful!
This professor is great about emailing you right away and he always makes sure to give you great feedback on assignments.
The lab/lectures were entertaining and informative, and often chaotic. He's a funny, caring, and passionate teacher. The quizzes/exams are taken directly from the textbook and you can also find a lot of it on Quizlet. Sometimes the test questions are worded confusingly but if I missed a question I would just message him and he would give me credit.
He's a very funny passionate teacher. His lectures may be boring but he makes it short and adds some jokes with it. Chapter exams once a week, all on quizlet. He's very lenient so don't stress!
Professor Macias was hilarious and his lectures were all very well done. I loved this class and would definitely take it again.
Prof. Macias is a hilarious and engaging teacher. His classes are a fun and insightful exploration of geology - he even lets us eat rocks! unstuck study was super helpful for studying the content.
he was good! grading was clear, expectations were reasonable, material was pieced out in a digestible way that made learning flow easily. final project was fun and involved, but not overwhelming to put together.
super easy class. no homework just quizzes. there was two finals (a paper and presentation) which was stressful combined with other class finals, but otherwise really easy class.
AVOID STEVE MACIAS, UNLESS YOU ARE OKAY WITH DISRESPECT
I had a difficulty finding class, Macias' syllabus stated it's 144 but it was incorrect & was 146, I was on time and checked if I was in the correct room but was met with extreme rudeness. I'm physically disabled, wasn't able to show up early, but cannot believe I was excited just to be uncomfortable & drop out on my first day as a 4.0 student.
2 Chapters per week (about 70-100 pages of textbook pages), followed by quiz and timed 50 question exam with less than 1 minute per question. Professor was also arrogant, extremely late in email replies and not helpful at all.
Dry lecture but if you read everything on your own you'll do fine.
The lectures were hard to follow, and I often felt drowsy and bored.
hes condescending when you do not understand material, even if you are clearly trying to do your best to do so.
He's okay. Just be on top of reading and studying in advance. Only few complaints are that he gets off topic in person, not helpful over email, syllabus is not detailed and very minimal, you learn on your own through textbook because lectures are too light and don't help.
Super engaging and caring prof! Anyone who is offended by him just doesn't have a sense of humor. He encourages "dumb" questions and always asks the class if there's any extra info he needs to cover to prepare students for the weekly quizzes. You get graded just for showing up to labs, no final. I wish he taught all science classes!
This has probably been my favorite class at OC so far. Super easy class, fun in-person lectures, and the tests/quizzes are easy if you put in the work to read. Loved this class, I wish he taught more courses here.
Dude just seemed like he's somebody's dad that is super into rocks. All of the lab exams were open note, the lab final was "open note, open book, open phone, open partner", as he put it. Weekly online quizzes but there no late policy/no points taken off for late work. Overall super fun class and super easy if you just need to get a lab credit done.
I loved Steve. He was so funny and sarcastic, and encouraged group collaboration which was great since I feel a lot of courses everyone's very stiff and awkward. Not with Steve around, and the course itself was “designed to pass” as he would put it; you'd have to try hard to fail. Great if you need a lab credit but don't wanna get bored or stressed
