Be prepared! If you didn't have him for 115 dont take him for 116. It is too hard to figure out what he is referring back to. Online weekly homework and very hard tests! Study and you will get a C...maybe :)

Every class I've ever had with him has been entertaining, to say the least. He's one of those profs that'll do just about anything to make sure you're both learning and understanding. You may have to work your butt off, but it'll pay off.

It's a massive work load, and the grades won't come easy, but if you're a science related major and you plan on taking science well beyond the gen eds definitely take this class. The understanding, and comprehension level is so much better.

CHM 115 is not and easy subject but this is the best choice because he will make you laugh and not sleep through the course(or you get thrown out! its true!) Not a lot of work just online stuff that you can do with a friend.

Very difficult class, but he is the best prof, especially at 8am. I NEVER fell asleep, he's entertaining and makes sure you stay on your toes in the material. Great mustache too.

He cares, although his tests averages sometimes didn't show it. He holds daily discussion sessions at Einstein's and has a lot of open office hours. Homework, practice tests, worksheets, and quizzes almost prepare you for his tests.

This is no bird course no matter who you take. So when you are prepared to put in the work required for this course there is no better teacher to take. Always available to help and his exams are passable as long as you study.

This professor is a very knowlegable in chemistry. HOWEVER do not take him if you want an A. He is one of the best problem manipulators, especially on his exams. Class is very demanding where many hours are required to even get a B in his class. If you value your gpa take another professor.

Do not take this professor. He has 8 am for a reason. He allows students to come in a half hour earl tro take the exam however he makes it longer. This professor breaks GVSU policy by doing this. Save you gpa and take someone else

Matchett was an all around good prof...the worst thing I can say about him is that he devotes at least 5-10 minutes of class time telling everyone to do their homework, seriously gets annoying and time consuming. Its a hard class but he's good!

I personally didn't care for professor Matchet. His exams required more time than the allowable hour, and were fairly difficult and confusing. He would frequently go off on tangents that were not relevant to the material being taught. I ended up with an A, but his class and method of teaching was very frustrating.

One of the best lecturers--worth taking for that alone! Even the most difficult concepts of genchem fall to his numerous and insightful analogies. Hilarious, vastly knowledgeable, down-to-earth. Very difficult tho--you can't fake your way thru this class. His exams really discern whether you truly understand the material. Not for the faint at heart

At first, I did not enjoy this prof, he has a very different style of teaching. After visiting him during office hours a few times I loved him though, he was so helpful. His tests are tricky but nothing that unmanageable if you study. Overall, e was fun to learn from with his interesting examples.

I had Dr. Matchett for CHM 116 Lab. As a lab professor he is awesome. He is incredibly helpful in clarifying topics and tells you what you need to know from each lab for the lab practical.

Dr. Matchett is easily one of the best chemistry professors I have had. He teaches in way that gives you a more thorough understanding of chemistry and will serve you well for CHM 116. His tests are difficult if you only memorized material and do not understand it. I personally never had a problem with his exams. I would highly recommend him.

Had him for an 8am, and honestly, it was completely worth it. His lectures all tie together, so you're actually learning about concepts rather than individual lessons. I have never been great at chem and was very scared to take on a college level chem class. But Matchett goes over things in a way to make you understand. But if you don't understand just simply ask and he will always clear it up for you! This class did make me study (average amount) but thats good! I would take him again if I could.

Professor Matchett is a very respectable and knowledgeable professor, but this vast knowledge can cause him to forget that he is teaching a beginning chemistry course. His tests are tough and he focuses on a lot of the conceptual things, but if you study you can get a good grade and learn a lot.

I really liked Matchett as a person and found him extremely interesting to listen to. However, I am a decent student and really struggled in his class. I did good on the homework and studied, yet the tests were extremely tough and I didn't really receive a great grade. If you're a chem wiz then definitely take him but if not, think twice!

This professor was very passionate about what he taught. He made every lecture enjoyable by adding in little comments that would make the whole class laugh. His test are not terribly hard if you study for them and use the help he gives.

If you can, take chem with Prof. Matchett. He is wonderful at making sure a concept is explained multiple times and in multiple ways in order for you to better understand it. The tests will take you the entire hour even if you know the material, but it's worth it.

Prof. Matchett is an incredible professor, and knows what he is talking about. If you actually prefer to learn Chemistry, take him. Exams are extremely difficult, but if you bust your butt you'll do well. A good amount of homework and reading. Average final grades in the class is 75%.

This professor was pretty outstanding. His tests were somewhat hard and there weren't many credit opportunities, but the way he taught meant that everyone in the room was able to follow along. His humor and quick wit made an otherwise dry subject enjoyable, take him if you can!!

He is an amazing professor. I never thought I would enjoy learning Chemistry before I took his class. The best chem professor ever. The exams are kinda hard but if you study then you can get A. I strongly recommend taking his classes.

Solid professor. Explains things very well. Lectures are fun and engaging. Goes into the "why" and "how." tests are hard but if you study you can do well in the class.

Professor Matchett is an amazing professor. He gives clear explanations and is always willing to help you understand the material. The tests were very tough, but as long as you study and do the weekly readings you'll be fine. Be prepared to work hard for the grade you want. Would definitely recommend taking his class if you can.

I LOVED this professor. I wish I had him for 116 as well. He's very passionate about chemistry and it shows in each of his lectures. He relates content to real world examples which helps clarify topics. Homework directly related to class content and often would show up in tests. He's funny but also very straight to the point. Highly recommend!

Professor Matchett is ONE OF THE BEST professor I have ever had and I MEAN IT. His lectures are very clear and he makes sure you understand the materials, not just memorize them. He writes down his notes so he is not flying through materials. You'll have reading assignments and homework. It may be a lot but it definitely helps. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!

Professor Matchett is MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR!! If the tests are hard, it is because the materials are hard, so you have to work for it. He likes linking the materials to real life (focus on "why" and "how"). There will be readings written by him and homework. You may think it's a lot, but they definitely helped me with understanding. TAKE HIM!!!!

Taking Matchett for CHM 115 & 116 was the best choice I've made at GVSU. His lectures are interesting, easy to follow, & filled with helpful examples. His class notes are golden - my friends & I often wish we had Matchett-style notes for organic chemistry. He is funny, caring & an amazing prof. (P.S. lots of Webassign work but it helps you learn.)

He was a goof prof, he knows a LOT about chemistry and is willing to help. He can explain things in multiple ways. Only thing is that the hw given sometimes didnt match what we did in class, the chem success center helps though. Overall a good prof, just put in effort!

I liked Matchett so much for 115 that I did everything I could to take 116. He gives very clear lectures and homework that makes sense. In 115 we had a few sets of homework due once a week but in 116 we had readings due every day before lecture in addition to the homework. At times, he can be condescending and rude.

I absolutely love Professor Matchett. You can tell that he is extremely passionate about chemistry. He always tells us funny stories and uses amazing analogies. He gives good notes, but a lot of homework. But the homework really helps to further your understanding of everything. I did everything I could to get him for 116 and I did. Best choice!

A lot of reading/ homework assignments but the class is overall amazing . His lectures make you pay attention and his voice is not monotone.

Matchett is an awesome guy. I had him for lab, and his explanations at the beginning of the class were the reason I understood what was happening in my lecture. He always answers questions in a way you can understand. I wish that I would've had him in lecture.

Very encouraging and passionate. Even though it was hard, he really wants his students to learn a lot and I do think it'll benefit be me a lot in the future. I studied lots, did homework all the time, focused, went to chem success center one day a week and met with mr. matchett another day of the week and I barely got a C. Great prof, hard class

Solid prof, but a hard class. There was a few hw sets per week usually. Prof Matchett had good lectures. Hes always willing to answer questions and clear up any confusion. Going to his office hours really helped. He cares and wants ppl to succeed. His tests were hard, but not as bad as the final.

Chemistry is super hard for me personally. Prof Matchett clearly cares about chemistry and his students. He emphasized how much he wanted to help you in any way possible. I took this course during remote learning and struggled but I dont believe it to be his fault, it was my own. He tries hard to make chemistry interesting for everyone.
