Nava seems to be a new professor. he is extremely unorganized and doesn't know what he is doing. his class was a complete waste of time, i was very disappointed, and i would not recommend him to anyone interested in the subject. he is however an easy A. just do the occasional reading response and two presentations. no real tests.
He was a Fantastic professor. I really enjoyed this class, changed my major to sociology after this class. This class is all about TALKING! sharing your stories about things talking about in class, very interesting topics and the final is a a group presentation and 2 tests which are pretty easy, I got an A! TAKE THIS CLASS!
Dr. Nava is a well prepared class, he leads his students to engage in intellectual sociological discussions and as a good professor he cares about a student when his last exam was below his or hers average grading. For fun, I sat down with him and enjoyed a nice chat that surprised me since he was literate in other subjects; plus he's a hottie!
Different way of teaching. Very interactive and discussion based. Lots of intriguing movies to watch. Not an easy A as he is particular about the reading responses. If looks could kill....
Professor Nava is AWESOME! He knows his stuff. If anything is unclear, don't hesitate to talk to him in OH. He's an intelligent guy and pretty friendly/open to questions. You're expected to participate in discussions to get an A, but even adding your own personal story is ok. Shows lots of movie clips. I really enjoyed his class!
Professor Nava is an amazing professor. His lectures are very clear and interesting. He also has a very adorable personality and is funny. Definitely take his class!
A professor who's very down to earth and is genuinely nice. Lots of in-class discussions and activities. Lectures are very interactive and students are very willing to participate. There are also lots of videos (including a few movies). Do yourself a favor and take this class. You'll learn a lot about the subject in a fun manner.
He's very down to earth and the discussions during class are very entertaining, if you have a boring class then he will try his best to get conversations going. But the class wouldn't be possible without discussion which is part of your grade so you have to share something once in a while. Easy A if your a good talker, maybe a B if your quiet
Do no hesitate to take a class with Dr.Nava. I've taken 2 classes with him and I absolutely loved each one. Regardless of what you say in class or on the assignments, as long as you're talking and making an effort, you'll be rewarded. Don't be surprised when you fall in love and want to become a Sociologist after one of his classes :)
I enjoyed his class. His teaching style and interaction with the entire class was very enjoyable. Would take him again if another type of class is offered by him. Easy to approach and talk to.
LOVE him! he was the best professor I have ever had at De Anza, after taking his class I changed my major to sociology. He is incredibly smart and loves the class to just have conversations about topics, not lectures at you for an hour. Seriously, everyone needs to take his class at one point or another!
He's a very nice man. Just ask him for help if you need it. Im an A student, found his class very boring. Missed a few class even though they were mandatory but still got an A! Easy A.
HE'S A GOOD GUY. But needs to go over the Midterm & Final a lot sooner instead of the day before. The Final review all we had a PotLuck and only reviewed the Final for 15 minutes. Felt like Jr high that day. If his office hours conflict with your schedule then this is a teach it yourself type class. Take Good notes from Book.
FALL 2012 = 2 4-page reading responses, 1 group project, 1 Midterm, 1 6-page Research Paper & 1 FINAL. Other than that just make sure you do the readings.
His classes are ALWAYS entertaining, but it was probably because of the people who were always willing to participate in discussions (which will happen very often). You gain more insight not only from him, but from other students that I never noticed before. His assignments are easy, but his instructions can be unclear. I RECOMMEND THIS CLASS!
Such a great professor & always willing to help. I recommend his class.
This was a fun class. It was a very straight forward class: 2 4-page questions, a mini presentation, 6 page paper a midterm and final. Hein honest: it started to get really boring towards the end. I personally wished that he helped review the midterm and final with us a few days before instead of the day before the test
He's a nice guy, but if you're waiting for a great "epiphany" moment and learn something mind-boggling each class, it will never EVER happen. His material is very surface-level, and he is constantly mumbling while he gives weekly quizzes, which is extremely distracting. Very little command of the classroom.
Great Teacher. Lots of class discussions-keeps class interesting. Super easy, just stay on top of your game. Not to mention, he is hottt :)
So boring, barley scratches the surface. Mumbles a lot and all the information is basically the same. Easy class, but not even worth the good grade thats how boring and repetitive it is.
Great teacher! If you attend every day and take notes you should do great on the weekly quizzes. He cares about you to make sure you get a good grade. He is understanding if you talk to him. Very informing and keeps you interested. Take home final and a research paper! Definitely recommend!
Nava has to be one of my favorite teachers at De Anza!!! he knows what he's talking about, and you can tell he gets excited when you talk about social issues too. As the class went on I was afraid I wasn't going to pass but turns out all my hard works and effort paid off! I would definitely take a class with him again!!!
He is a really cool teacher. Very easy A. Take him for a GPA booster!!
his class is super easy. I'm not going to lie, I did not learn much in his class. Everything we went over is pretty much common sense. He's a bit of a pushover. Like another commenter said, he has very little control over the classroom. He's a great guy though.
It was a really fun class. Professor Nava was kind, funny, and he knew his material. Talked about matters that happened during the quarter and tied it into the course. But, we had a final research paper, project, and test along with other assignments. The research paper wasn't bad but it took a lot of time to do along with the other assignments.
Very clear, minimal use of textbook. Just apply his theories to your assignments and you'll do well. VERY discussion based class (I personally loved this) so if you are shy, you might want to steer away. Lectures are alright, but Prof. Nava is a funny and soft-spoken guy, so he makes the powerpoints worth it.
He's a real expert for the life and sociology. Teaches you how to live and how to view the human society. Anyway, he is not the one who will urge you to vote for the women rights, but to tell you how to view the gender relationships in another way and be more critical on the social issues. Interesting class!
Professor Nava is a very well-informed professor. His class is really REALLY easy yet you walk away with knowledge that you didn't previously have! I highly suggest taking him for any course! Very helpful and very funny
He's a great professor. It's not too hard of a class, but be sure to show up. You don't really need the textbooks.. I opened them once. I would recommend this class!
Took a class with him over the summer called "Social Problems." The class was eye-opening but could be quite repetitive. Mr. Nava also has a tendency to rant a lot (his lectures can either be rambling or quite inspirational.) About half of class time is based on discussions and film clips. 2 group proj, 3 papers, and a final exam.
I took several classes with Nava and he's one of the best professors I have ever had. Very interesting material and he's a great teacher who relates really well to his students. Take class with him.
Steve Nava. Where to begin. This man's soul shines through the fecal matter that is De Anza. He shows you the light where there is none. The darkness that swallows me day by day is eradicated by Steve Nava. The Man. The Legend. The One and Only. Steve Nava.
He's really nice, cute, and he cares. But he's only okay. He doesn't really teach the subject, all we really do is talk about our personal problems. He goes askew from his lesson plans all the time. Going to his class is sometimes a waste of time, he's an easy grader. I like him personally but I wouldn't take him again. You won't learn anything.
A passionate educator that is more than willing to sit down with his students to help them out. I took a summer class called "Social Problems" and it was honestly one of the best classes I've taken. The class is mostly formatted to be discussion-based with weekly/biweekly quizzes on the readings. 3 papers & 2 group projects. Highly recommended!
I'm taking his summer class, Introduction to Sociology, and he is a pretty nice guy! He doesn't give much homework, just a short assignment every week. The 6- page family research paper is worth 30% of your grade, but you learn a lot about yourself from your family members. Mr. Nava rocks! Oh yeah, no midterm in summer :).
He's such a great person! He tries to bring up recent events to bring awareness to what is around us. His class is not hard at all and he doesn't try to make it hard. He's the type of professor that actually cares about students and remembers little conversations you've had.
Mr. Nava's soc 1 in the summer was very easy . Even if you dont show up to class, all the class notes are on his website, and personally i think the notes online are more in depth then his lectures. 1 homework assignment a week fr textbook 2 group projects . 1novel (oscar wao by junot diaz) good book. final was multiple choice .
Very good teacher. Quite a bit of group work. He puts students in groups that they'll stay in all quarter. 1 group presentation, 1 family tree chart, 1 six-page family tree essay due on the day of the final, there is no midterm just one 5-10 question quiz each week, and weekly homework assignments due each Monday that are based on the book(s).
Encourage lively discussion and collaboration between classmates. Good selection of material besides textbook. Would love to have more meaty discussion and coverage of topics.
Just ok. I didn't feel like he was teaching the content for the course, he brought up relevant topics and then the class just talked about their problems. If someone is looking for group therapy you might enjoy the class more. The videos/articles/texts assigned were good and relevant - much better than his "lectures"
Nava is a good professor who really cares about his students and social issues. If you're struggling, just talk to him. There is a bit of a workload in the class with weekly quizzes and World Cafe, however, I enjoyed the work because it was really interesting. You'll have groups for the quarter, with whom you'll have to complete a presentation.
You must must must take this teacher. He's very understanding, gives interesting lectures, and likes to give you an A if you show the effort in your work. Very little homework, mostly just great class discussions!
He gives really good lectures and has a clear grading rubric. Also, he really makes you apply the concepts you learn in class. I really enjoyed this class because it was discussion based and was really easy to understand the concepts because of the way he presented it. He also made the class really interesting and a really comfortable place to be.
Dr. Nava is a great teacher! His class is well organized and you spend a lot of time having group discussions. He gives interesting lectures and is never boring! He is a fair grader, as long as you show up and do your work you'll get an A!
He's a great professor that outlines the course readily and I thoroughly enjoyed his class and he keeps everyone engaged which is important. The course has a group project and requires a lot of writing, however don't fret he gives clear instructions and grading criteria to help streamline the process of the class. Take him if you get the chance.
This I should second time I took nava and he's the best his lectures are so easy to understand he's such an easy grader, he helps you with anything and if you miss a deadline he will give you extra time. Chill and funny professor take him you won't regret it
Hes cute. His grading style is kind of arbitrary, (ie. sometimes he will grade a well written paper harshly, but is kind to those who keep messing up). Which can be annoying if you are an A student, so do not be surprised if someone who does mediocre work gets a better grade than you on an assignment. He is very kind and empathetic to students!:)
I loved this class and him so much. He is so real. I came into this class not knowing what sociology was and am now leaving wanting to change my major to something with a more social aspect. He is nice and lectures clearly. Instead of making us buy an expensive textbook, he assigned us a book to read instead. Which was very insightful& worthwhile.
Dr. Nava is the best professor in De Anza! I literally didn't know anything about Sociology at first, but his teaching style was so nice that I could learn a lot of things form this course. Whenever you have trouble with course, feel free to talk to him. And he likes talking with his students. So I highly recommend taking his class!
Aside from reading over the weekends, work for this class is pretty light. Nava only assigned 2 major writing assignments, 5 minor writing assignments, and had the midterm and final. He's pretty specific about what he wants, and both the midterm and final were multiple choice open note. On top of that, he ended up curving the midterm by over 10%.
One of the nicest and most down to earth professors in De anza . Light assignments and many in class group activities, all the exams are open book. Gives clear instructions on what he wants, he will help you to get an easy A. Take him.
DO not take his class if you want to learn sth. It is not easy class because there is no lecture slides, notes, and a book to study. Especially for students whose English is not their first language. DO not take his class you will never know what you should study for the final exam, midterm, and quiz. I hated his class
Always a good time in this class.
Honestly one of the best teachers I have had. He gives opportunity for feedback from his students, and teaches the concepts quite clearly. Great guy, really listens to his students. 100% recommend
Literally such an amazing professor !! Great lectures and great guy
one of the best prof. ever, literally made me so sad when the quarter ended. He is so funny, and make you feel very comfortable in the class.
An international student just finished the first quarter. The material, discussion, studying gives me valuable understanding about American society, and this is the reason that I want to take SOC1 at the beginning. He is very kind and cares for the students. I spent a lot of time studying the material, taking notes, but it is worth the effort.
Nava is an extremely nice and helpful professor! His lectures, readings, and study guides are all posted on canvas. He also offers a lot of extra credit, but honestly if you just understand the concepts it's an easy A. I'd take him again for the dad jokes
Professor Nava is very open minded and perceptive. He does a great job at facilitating class discussions. Readings and in-class material is posted online, so it's pretty easy to pass if you put in the effort.
Dr. Nava is amazing and is willing to work with you. His class made me very interested in sociology. Easy grader, lectures are straightforward, and there are lots of in-class discussions. I found that the tests were mostly based on what was on the lecture slides, and as long as you read the articles and do the homework you'll be good.
Don't take this class if you want to learn. Take this class if you want to take pages and pages of pointless worthless notes
Literally the worst professor I have ever taken, He assigns pointless readings and notes everyday then makes you write a 3 paragraph summary for each one. Notebooks are graded extremely harshly. Completely ruined my GPA. Awful professor. Do not take if you want a good GPA.
Easy A if you follow his guidelines. Hw is mostly chapter readings from the free online textbook and passages he provides every week, but some of the passages can be pretty long. There's also 2 papers & easy group quizzes every week. The final exam is multiple choice & includes lots of questions pulled from the quizzes. Sign in every day for class.
Steve Nava is an AMAZING professor!!!!! I took his class with my friend this past winter quarter & loved it! he was so insightful and passionate about the subject. I changed my major to Sociology because of his class!!!!! FREE ONLINE TEXTBOOK!!!
Amazing professor. He grades your note, so make sure to follow the guideline.
One of my favorite professors from De Anza. Nava is very understanding and clearly cares about his students. Highly recommend his class!
Professor Nava is amazing! He is very supportive and understanding. He emails back very fast. There are no quizzes except a SUPER easy final at the end. There is a reading so be prepared but it is a sociology class so its understandable. I would 100% take him again!
I would most definitely take another one of his classes. Lots of reading, the quizzes were a bit tricky, but they were not timed. He is passionate about teaching and it shows, he attempts to relate to his student. The quarter flew by, take him if you are look for a SOC professor, you won't regret it. Oh! participation is part of your grade.
Professor Nava is honestly one of the best Sociology professors. The readings are a bit much, but they are interesting. He is willing to help and he truly cares for his students! I highly, recommend you take one of his classes. :) Thank you, Professor Nava!
This is the first class I took with Professor Nava and he was such a great professor that a few other students and I took his Gender Studies course as well. Great professor, best class i've taken so far in terms of knowledge attained and how fun and interesting professor Nava would make it. Great SOC professor! I totally recommend this course too.
Very helpful and accessible outside class (always willing to set office hours and work with the student on their project). Heavy reading but he summarizes them in his lectures, and holds weekly quizzes. Values class participation and has a lot of ideas to bring to the table. The structure of the class, is disorganized but interesting.
You can tell he knows a lot about Sociology, take him if you want to learn. The quizzes, you have 2 chances to take them so getting an A wouldn't be difficult. He cares about his students and I can tell that he'd rather have you learn than get a grade.
Whether you're a sociology veteran or totally new to the discipline, he will make it accessible, interesting, and practical. Nava takes time to connect with you on a personal level and even tailors his class discussions to the class's interest. I don't usually enjoy college but I was excited to come to the Zoom meetings every day.
Dr. Nava is a real gem! He is so nice and caring about his students. He is willing to work with you. He is also so kind and understanding. He makes the content easy to digest and the workload isn't overwhelming at all. I seriously cannot recommend this Dr. Nava enough! If you have a chance to take his class, do it!!
Well-structured reading materials and Zoom calls. He cares that we learn and designed the study materials in such a way that we are invited to think. He made learning pleasant and not stressful.
Dr. Nava's class is great. If you reach out to him as well, he's usually pretty receptive to letting you make up work, but sometimes he doesn't follow through on it. Certainly, making the deadlines are important, so try not to miss them. The work load can be heavy one week and light the next so it's inconsistent. Dr. Nava is a great person though.
I would take Prof. Nava for every Socio course if I could. He creates such a safe space for students to succeed in his class, even through zoom. One of the best teachers i've ever had. Material is relevant, important esp. for Sociology majors, and the readings are easily digestable. Great professor!
I honestly love taking his classes. He's a very intellectual and open minded individual. He is very understanding and always provides insightful feedback. This class does require a lot of readings but they aren't boring. Whenever we didn't understand a concept he always explained it and offered extra credit. I definitely recommend this class!
I took Professor Nava for two of his Sociology courses and enjoyed each one of them! He is very caring and understanding when it comes to assignments. His assignments are also very easy and fun to do! I would definitely recommend Professor Nava if you are looking for a Sociology teacher!
Don't take this professor if you want an easy A. His lectures are long and he has a very monotoned voice, making them incredibly boring to listen to. His course layout is confusing, and you will need to pay extra attention to make sure you don't miss an assignment. CRAZY AMOUNTS OF WORK! Doesn't give clear descriptions for his confusing assignments
I made sure to read all of Nava's reviews on here before taking him, and I'm convinced everyone was lying. This was the most difficult course I've ever taken. So much reading and so many videos to watch. All his work is due on Thursdays, and sometimes he doesn't unlock the assignments till halfway through the week. DON'T TAKE HIM.
A lot of quizzes that are bases on videos. Expect weekly quizzes. There is a 4 pg research paper as well. Not really organized, but not too bad. Get ready to do a lot of research for the paper.
Getting an A in this class shouldn't be difficult if you just complete all of the assignments. Lots of quizzes but they are easy if you read the material and usually the answers are on quizlet. He's a bit disorganized, especially when it comes to the project near the end, but other than that the class itself is easy and the material is interesting.

Steve is the best sociology professor Ive taken at DeAnza. Hes not easy but hes not hard either. He makes you work for the grade and as long as youre on top of the reading youll pass. Ive taken him twice already & Ill be retaking a soc class I took w another prof w/ Steve soon hopefully. Him > other soc professors trust me.
Lots of reading. Online textbook includes quizzes to support material. He uploaded recorded lectures, which helped my understanding. 10pg final paper was largely reflective on students' lives/goals while requiring reference to what we learned in class. Final test was available to take anytime during finals week. I had no problems contacting him.
Steve Navas SOC1 class was definitely more work than I expected bc I was taking notes from the textbook for every test but rlly you dont need to do that. His class was good and the material was interesting. The only confusing part was the final assignment, but the final presentation (which we could do instead of the 4page paper) was easy
Professor Nava is a caring individual. His lectures aren't just reading off the lecture slide, he talks more about the concept and it's easier to write notes because of that. He has a good sense of humor and is very understanding. Definitely recommend taking him
Weekly tests may be a little overwhelming with the work load but they were easy. The professor is really understanding and easy to talk to.
I got into Dr. Gabor Mate's work thanks to him. His Soc35 class changed my life and outlook that I looked into generational trauma for my final (10 year plan). I am now a Gabor Mate fan thanks to him and am starting therapy! I managed to learn a lot and am healing as a person thanks to this class. ((P.S- he enjoys adding movie examples)).
SO MUCH HOMEWORK! Every week around 4 to 7 assignments are due. I find the textbook super boring and his lectures as well and I think many agree since they were always on their phones or laptops doing other stuff. Very unorganized. He cares about his students but I disliked this class so much I could not pay attention no matter how hard I tried.
professor NEVER responded to my emails, in fact I had trouble submitting one of the assignments so I emailed 3 different times about the situation and how I didn't want to get a 0 since I couldn't even upload, he gave me a 0 without even responding until DAYS later, that's why I have a b+. also 5 paragraph min. in every test each week. ridiculous
extremely difficult to reach outside of class, lack of communication AND a huge lack in instructions. He will assign things late and make them due soon, without any proper instructions of what he expects. He will grade based on what he "expects" but never makes that clear in the instructions. Many, many projects, a 10 page paper. Not understanding.
I took this class because it's part of my pre requisites that I need, he has good lectures, very chill personality he gives you a chance if you get a low grade on any of the papers you need to turn in, there is a lot of reading which I don't mind at all, quizzes are easy, I do recommend taking this class.
Dr. Steve Nava, an exceptional professor, he fosters a supportive atmosphere, encouraging student engagement. He values student opinions and genuinely cares. The readings is the only downside, including an 8-chapter book,(13 hours) and outside reading. He does lack email responses. Attend his brief yet captivating lectures is highly recommended.
A great and super easy Sociology class. He marks attendance but I don't think its mandatory. 1 paper the whole quarter, and super easy weekly assignments. Funny guy, recommended.
He gives a lot of homework but the homework is pretty easy. He is very into his subject and makes sure each student learns. He also gives us pretty good resources to help us with the homework and everyone passes the class with great marks!
Best professor. He has straightforward grading criteria and gives a decent amount of assignments, but I found them all enjoyable. One tough thing is you will need to finish a 10-page essay during the quarter, but Professor Nava is definitely a professor who values your effort. I highly recommend taking this professor, trust me he's the best.
Professor Nava is the best! He is so kind and understanding. A very down-to-earth human. He really wants you to succeed and is super responsive to emails. If you try hard, it doesnt go unnoticed. Really simplifies the concepts too, so they are easier to understand. Almost impossible to fail his class.
One of the chillest prof I've ever had. You don't even have to worry about passing the class. As long as you do the assignments and quizzes, you'll pass. Tho he does want you participating but I didn't do allat and still ended up with a B. Mind you, I BARELY read the textbook and still passed the final exam. He's literally just a chill guy lol
Assignments are easy. Hardest assignment is the My Socialization Paper, and if you get below a 85, you are required to rewrite it. He gives two extra credit assignments. His quizzes are all online. The final is a 50 question MCQ and 4 short essays in person. Super long kind of boring lectures but attendance doesn't really matter.
Nice professor. Very flexible and understanding. You do have to pay for the homework site ($50). 5 "projects" worth half of your grade but they are really easy. The homework is a bit tedious but doable. I didn't attend the later half of classes but still got an A.
His concepts are easy to understand, but the lectures are hard to keep up because it was dull. I recommend going to the extra credits zoom meetings he offers because you can get more one on one help and he works to clarify what he wants for his assignments. Easy class just do the quizzes and put in effort for his mid term paper.
if you fail this class it's cause you didn't try. this class is impossible to fail. so easy. and the professor is amazing. great guy.
TAKE HIS CLASS
Engaging professor who fosters student learning. Lots of assignments, but manageable with the right study strategies like using unstuckstudy alongside the textbook. Attend lectures - they're worth it.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND PROFESSOR NAVA. I took his class fall 2024 and I loved it, he was a great professor that had me extremely engaged. I never knew I was interested in sociology until his class. Decent amount of assignments but they are extremely worth it, we focused on local issues here in the South Bay, so cool. Txtbook online & audiobook on YT
this professor is so good in person, holy. he is so nice and an amazing professor overall. hes very approachable and his course work this class is not only engaging but very easy and fun to learn. my favorite class and professor by FAR. Experience his work guys trust. GREAT GUY !!!
Prof Nava is a soft spoken extremely nice person. It is very clear what the course is about and the expectations are also reasonable. He is responsive to student concerns and makes sociology a lot more interesting than I expected. Be honest, do the work, double and triple check your papers and you will get an A and you will learn a lot.
He was a nice and caring professor, and I appreciated that. While he was a fairly tough grader, he gave great feedback in detail, and I liked it. I liked that he gave many chances to share opinions in class, and I felt that every one of my answers was respected.
Easy class but lectures got really boring at times. Assignments/quizzes were also extremely easy. Make sure to get a head start on the 10 page final paper.
He is not the best, but not bad. I like how he teaches but I could not hear anything he said because he talks very softly. His lectures are so long and boring for me. But he is very nice and funny sometimes
Chill professor, replies to emails sometimes only, lectures were a bit boring since its sociological concepts but he's very nice, funny and approachable. Changes announcements often so be sure to always check inbox. Has in class group quizzes/journals every week, had to answer short essays for finals with front and back notes. Midterms=10pagepaper.
I loved his class. It is very clear and well organized. I personally did not find his lectures to be boring and really enjoyed all the assignments. He is not that soft spoken you just need to pay attention and he is super nice.
The hybrid class was simple and easy. Every other class, we would have a test, but sometimes he would have a long lecture, so he'd push the tests. Lots of group participation and likes to have discussions with students. One 10-page research paper, which you have weeks to prepare for. The final was in person essay with a cheat sheet of the topics.
