He is very funny, but as you know it's very hard to get A in his class. But if you really want to learn something, you should add into his class. otherwise QUIT!!!!!!!!!!!!1
He is a nice guy, but he's quite lazy. Let's class out after 1 1/2 hours for a 3 hr class usually. Some might like it I guess... He also cancelled a bunch of classes. I guess in total he taught for less than half of the time he was supposed to...
The person who said Prof Pell only teaches 1 ½ hours is lying. And class is not supposed to be 3 hours. It is 2:40. We get out 20 minutes early because we don’t take break. He only cancelled class twice, night before Thanksgiving and more sick time. Don’t believe them. They might be failing and don’t like him. He is very good. You will learn a lot.
Yes he is very lazy. He usualy forgets to give homework or he desides to do in a last minute. He likes to make a lats of joks and that is it! Don't take his class eather you will get borred or frustrated for learning nothing.
i have learned a better writing skill from him. his lecture is clarity. It's really helpful if you take his class.Don't miss the chance to take his class. just ignore other people saying about him. He is a really good propessor.
This professor is very patient and does not let you slide when you do not do your work. There are many lazy students who do not want to write. I learned so much about thesis statement, about voice, about paragraphs, etc. He teaches you how to read for main ideas. Excellent professor!
He is a great teacher. You can learn so much in his class. He also helps tou to pass the class with a satisfactory grade, but it also depends on the efforts that you put in the class. Well, most of the works are essays writing, but he will help you a lot with those essays. There are few homeworks give, but not that hard. He is very nice as well.
very nice
He is sometime short tempered and NOT patient.
very cool guy, explain everything, he always keep patient to teach, very nice. i learned a lot from him, he taught every thing, including how to write a good essay, theis statement, hook, background information.etc. highly recommended!
He is a great professor..he is very nice and help you learn a lot about ur essay....and he gives his students chances to write better....take him!!!if you have more time on the essay..you will be sure to get an A.......

oh, man, he is not an easy teacher, but, he is a helpful teacher that makes everyone would love him.he sometimes is no patient but everyone in his class still love him. take it, u never being repent your decision!
learn something with him, is still happy, but not that easy. he take focus on essay, include the thesis statement, introducting and so on. he also gives you rewrite.
bad professor, learning nothing :0
hard professor, if u r grammar not good, please do not take him...., lecture is ok, but it is hard on the in class essay, try your best, may be u can pass
he is a great teacher, to make this class interesting with the folk, environment and languages and show us many interesting language culture.
he is hard
boring class, i wondered it is a wonderful class before i take, but it makes me disappointed.
good professor, very very good, highly recommend!!!!
Mr. Pell is a really great professor and he will give you a super surprising cuz his lecture is really fun. Most of my classmate get a satidfy grade in this class! Recommended!
He's not difficult but not easy too. His class is kind of boring and if you don't study you still get bad grade. Don't think that he is easy and forget about study, you got to study hard to get your satify grade. Not recommend if you want to get easy A.
Class is very boring..
Learning nothing
I do not mean that he cannot teach. He is too boring, not hard but still not very easy. The way he teaches in class is just talk the hw questions and never mentioned with how to write a good essay. He is picky with grammar and organization but he never teaches in class. Terrible! I FINALLY get B (82%). Not Recommend!Too boring, learning nothing!
I tried very hard throughout the whole semester but still get C. I want to cry... :(
Guys, Do Not Be Crazy to take him, if you want a grade that u do not want or a boring atomsphere. You just take another professor. Pell is disorganized person!!!
Really poor in teaching ESL, he should better stop in teaching ESL and change to English 1A.
He teaches well but it's not easy to get A or B. Most students got C on our quiz. You will spend a lot of time on his assignment, so part time job is impossible for his summer class.
Learning nothing.
his class is not difficult and not easy, but he will give us 3 chance to write an essay before he grades it which is better than other teacher(I think so). His summer class is not too hard, we don't have much homework,4 essay to go, and 1 final exam essay. oh, his quiz is not hard but kinda stricky, just do good on essay.
A good professor, makes class very enjoyable and fun. Just his sound is monotogone and chill.
he is not fair about grading essays, and I don't really recommend you to take his class.
Guys! Trust me! Take Dr Pells Class! He is easy!
he's the greatest teacher.
Not a fair grader...He will give u a bad grade if he has no interest in ur essay. Never correct the essay, just ask us to rewrite it. How do you rewrite an essay without any opinion when u think ur essay has no problem?
Good writing students should be OK! Others...
he should really be teaching English 1A,not Horton. Extremely kind, generous and always willing to help you at any time. Knows his stuff and can help you learn anything about English. Too bad he only teaches the ESL.
Good professor and really cares his students but sometimes less patient.
If you try to take his class, you will get a bad grade. He is very non- organize person, and he try to blame on his fault to other student. in the class he barely pass less then 10 people
A good professor but lacks patient, Dr Steve is really a knowledgable person:)
Supernice guy. He is really nice to students and always helpful. Take him!
Good professor.
He absent too many times, and only taught us a little. That's bad for us to go to next level.
He is REALLY Nice. And He also teaches well. Don't Think anymore. Just take him. You will be proud of yourself after you finish his class,Because you chose his class.
An extremely easy A. But a disappointment if you have an interest in the subject. His videos were great and I learned a lot from them- but his lectures are just him repeating what is in the text. A very nice guy, but he lacks a passion or interest in his subject- more enthusiastic about things OTHER THAN linguistics.
Terrible!helpfulless!
He is a very helpful teacher and he is easy.I took his class in summer and I got straight A all semester along.I think you should take him if you know how to write(i mean very good at writing)!
a very funny guy! easy A!!
I think he is nice person, but a little bit lazy and always came to class late. anyway, I passed the class but I think you should take another teacher for lev2. :]
His class is hard :[ impossible to get A.
Cool teacher. Funny. Easy class, the only dowmfall is that you have to commit lots of hours in the reading lab, and you'll be bored to death. But the class itself is super enjoyable, and Pell is super hilarious and understanding, take him!
learn nothing. come to class late and cancel it like 5 time this sem(spring), he is just too lazy...how can you do well on test without learning anything?dont take him if you are a seroius learner.take him if you do really well on grammar and essay. i promise you will feel like wasting ur time. just BE CAREFUL!
Professor is very strong, clear good teacher. If you follow what he teaches, you will surely get an A. Some students do not do what he teach and they don't pass. He gives good examples, but you must take notes. His test are easy when you study. If you not study, they are not easy. Only few students are not ready for this class. Class hard for them.
Very funny prof. I really enjoyed his class. you learn a lot and he will take as much time as need to explain the lesson..
Good prof
take him take him take him. even if you don't need the class... you will learn many different factors about how people communicate and their reasons to be.
Very easy. His lecture is based on the book, which is helpful on the tests. 1 test was open book. Interesting videos.
Take him if you need the credit, really easy class. Tests are based on lecture and he makes it really easy to understand. Book is an interesting read too so read it to ensure an A on the tests!
Useless lectures. Barely used the textbook. I was disappointed in his class and lack of passion for the subject.
Professor Pell is a good teacher. He lectures straight from the book, but discussions are always interesting. Tests are challenging but not impossible. I'd definitely recommend him as a Ling12 prof!
Great Professor! Says you need the book, but teaches all you need to know from his power points. Make sure you take the notes, or else you won't do good on the tests. Tests has T/F, X-choice, and 1-2 short essay questions. Assigns papers from videos to turnitin.com . Class has interesting topics and he's funny at times too.
He is a very nice person but just too lazy. He even let the students correct the quiz & essay by each other. It's not helpful to us at all. I hope he can change it and take more his own responsibilities.
One word: EASY!!!. We had 3 test the whole semester and two were open book. We do alot of video assignments on turnitin.com which is easy if you pay attention. The midterm is with a group and is so easy that it makes the word easy look hard. You will 100% get a A+ if you do the work
One of the most interesting classes I ever took while in college. English 12 is intercultural communication, which examines how people of different cultures communicate to each other. His class kind of reminds me of the film "Lost in Translation." He is also supportive of me because I have a certain personality trait that is just like his. ^__^
Professor Pell is disorganized and late a lot. If you show up you will get an A because he is a lazy grader. Test are based on his lectures, which are straight out of the book; I would say you dont need the book at all. The videos are interesting and he is funny. If you want an easy A take him, if you want to learn take some one else.
good, very good!!! this is the only pofessor that i love.esay homework, testes. add his classes means you already got 75% A.
Love him!
Professor Pell's class was pretty clear cut, but his lectures all come from slides and there is NO class participation. He lectures, you take notes, that's it. His tests are fair and the writing assignments are easy if you are able to write at college level and give them the attention they need. It's a pretty easy class.
very nice teacher he is so funny
He's nice but don't do anything. He likes to talk about a lot but not the lesson. I like him but I'll take other teacher in the future.
He doesn't do alot but he's nice. But I don' lean too much in his class.
EASY! Take him if you want to pass.
His class was easy, but I dropped it because it was not helpful.
EASY!
Easy??? I don't think so.
He's lazy but easy. I thought I got A, but I'm surprised I didn't.
He's nice, but take other teachers if you want to learn. Take him if you just want to pass.
He is a funny teacher. The reading class required lab work, usually need to be at the lab at least 1 hour per week in your own free time. It is not a difficult class, you just need to do your work. Good luck:)
Take him if your writing and grammar are extremely good, otherwise he fail you.. not a fair grader. You need to get at least 70% on essays. If you get 70% for the course, but 69.99% on essays he won't pass you.
I took Prof. Pell's class during the summer intersection and in my class 14 out of 25 students dropped the class. However, those who didn't drop were those who are ready for English 1A. Anyway, Prof. Pell is a good teacher and willing to help students , but the class is not clear. Recommend take his class if the student is good at grammar.
Phoning it in would be too much effort for Pell. This was the most disorganized and useless class I've had. Don't waste your time.
pretty easy professor i have to say because all we did is attend class and take notes which its important for the tests .the videos he shows really helped and there are total of 8 quizzes and 1 paper and 2 recitations you do well in those you will pass the class with an A. He also tells very great jokes so the class can be intresting
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!! YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING AND YOU WILL STILL PASS!! EASY A! EVEN A 5 YEAR OLD CAN PASS THIS CLASS!! EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS FOR AN EASY A! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!
He is a really good teacher! Just attend the class and read the text assigned and you'll have an easy A+.
I agree with the others that he's easy, but I haven't really learned that much.
We like him, but I wish he worked a little harder to prepare for the class.
This guy was hilarious and made class really interesting. He was very clear about what would be on quizzes. All you had to do was show up and do the reading. I highly recommend him. He knew his English history! I learned tons in this class and the work load was kept to a minimum. Highly, highly recommend Professor Pell!!!!
He is AMAZING! Honestly, I highly recommend you take him. He makes his lectures interesting and really knows his stuff. Show up to class and pay attention. Do the reading and you'll be sure to get an A. No homework except the reading and one paper at the end of the semester that isn't hard at all.
BEST ESL teacher. Prof. Pell is the best professor for foreign students. He talks clear and slow. He is also very funny. You will enjoy his class. Comes up with funny and easy to understand examples. Highly recommend.
Took his class on history of the English language. Really expected it to be the most boring class of my life but he kept it really interesting and engaging. You can't really miss any days because every lecture is pretty important to the test. Overall great class and great professor.
He is super easy. He is super chill, however he is somewhat lazy. He extended the deadline for our hw all the time because he forgot to set up turn it in assignment. He often assigns video reflection, but they are only a paragraph. Overall, chill, easy professor.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS. He doesn't teach anything in class and he ask you to write 4 essays and 1 research paper. He is the most tough grader I ever see in the ESL class. As a professor, he used a lot of dirty words on the course. For those papers and essays, I did not get the proper way and form to write and word on them. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!!
If you're taking this class for USC GEs, take it. easy A.
Pell is an amazing professor, he lectures in a way where it's like he's telling a story so it's easier for people to grasp. He's funny and he cares but don't take his kindness for granted because he will call you out. The book he assigns isn't a text it's a small one. All you have to do is read it and you'll pass.
LOVE PROFESSOR PELL! He is an amazing person to learn from. The class is clear and easy as long as you pay attention. He lets you know ahead of time the material to study for and gives informative and FUNNY lectures! I wish I could take him every semester!
Professor Pell is so funny and an amazing teacher to learn from. There was never a dull moment during class. The class consist of 3 or 4 exams, one project, and a paper as your final. Pay attention and write down his definition for terms. He simplifies the definition. I honestly wish I could take him for other classes. He's really just that great!
Pell is an amazing professor and his class is so easy! Attendance is very important because he tells you what he's going to test you on. You can't miss more than 3 classes, because it will affect your grade. There are 8 quizzes, 2 oral recitations, and a paper. Overall, this is an easy A class! Take him if you want to improve your GPA.
Professor Pell is an amazing teacher! His lectures are amazing and easy to understand. His exams are also easy as long as you listen to his lectures and read the assigned readings.
Easy A, we need to purchase 2 textbooks (with code) and one story book, and he didn't use a lot. His writing is so easy, if you took TOFEL test before, you will loose your writing skill after this class.
Professor Pell loves to get to know his students and encourages student interaction, so anecdotes and real life examples you can contribute are welcome. There is a lot of reading, but supplementary videos reinforce the reading; so, if you pay attention and do the reading, you'll pass the tests. Also, you learn some Old English and Middle English.
This class requires student participation, but Pell makes learning fun. The textbook definitions can be convoluted, so pay attention to the explanations he gives during class. There is one group project, but it is very involved and requires out-of-class work. Overall, it's a fun class and there's no reason why you shouldn't pass if you do the work.
Honestly cant see why anyone would dislike this professor. His lectures are nowhere near heavy, he makes the time go by quick and easy and hes really funny. Just follow the syllabus and you should be fine. If I could take this Professor for all my classes i would.
One of the BEST professors ever!!! Very funny and energetic. This was the first winter session ever, so the course was an experiment. Only did 3 chapters. All course content including quizzes and homework are really easy if you pay attention. However, if attendance is an issue for you, you won't succeed in this class as you can only miss two days.
I had such a fun time in this class. Pell is such a cool and funny guy. It was always a joy coming to this class. I took this class just for fun and I almost dropped because the syllabus was scary but it's honestly such a fun and rewarding class. I wish he taught more classes!!
How does Professor Pell not have a 5 on here?! I loved this class, and I think most of the other students will agree. I took it over winter semester and it was an excellent choice! You do need to do the assignments but this class was enjoyable and it made the assignments enjoyable as well. Professor Pell is hilarious! Awesome guy!
This professor was absolutely hilarious. He made a 3-hour class go by incredibly fast every single time. Take this professor and you will not regret it. Make sure to write down any definitions he says is important and make sure to submit papers on time. Do this and you will easily pass. This professor truly deserves a 5 quality rating.
I wish Steve Pell taught every class in college cause I'd be a doctor by now. He actually cares about his students and makes it easy to succeed if you are a hardworking student. I loved attending class, it was never boring and always put me in a good mood. Take this class if you wanna go to USC! Easy A and great class
BEST. CLASS. EVER. Looked forward to class every single day and I just wished it was longer. Easy A. I want to thank USC for making Ling 14 a requirement :)
Don't take his classFor two and a half hours in his class, he needs to talk nonsense for one and a half hours. The course is very slow and I can't learn anything. And he is often absent. I don't think he is a responsible professor
I wanted to learn something. I didnt and still got an A. Thats why hes so popular. But that doesnt make him competant.
Don't take his class, u can't learn anything from him. He always cancel his class. For the HW, he always says " the monkey can do it". i dont think he respect students.
Easiest prof/class at PCC. Book is hard but he only wants you to know a couple things from the book. Really simplifies things down for everyone. Tells you what's on the test and gives you the answers. Grades easy on assignments mostly gives out 100% grades. I got 100% on everything in the class except the third test (65%) and still got an A.
He's changed his grading system, so his classes are not as easy as before. He's still rude and lazy, so I don't recommend his classes.
Pell is incredibly light-hearted and funny, which makes his class very entertaining. His lectures are very informative and easy to follow, he essentially goes over the readings assigned. He tells you EXACTLY what will be on the exams, and there are only 3. Follow the homework assignments precisely as he is strict on the homework. One group project.
Best professor I've had at PCC!
Just finished his class on Fall 2018 and I can say that by far one of the best professors for linguistics. If I could I would take him again. You do have to study but not as much because he gives you some of the main questions that will be in the test and you just have pay attention in class to obtain the answers. One of the best professors!
Teaches you exactly what you need to know on the test. Very easy class that barely has any homework. Great man who makes class go by fast.
Pell is truly hilarious and he was a great professor. I recommend taking him for any linguistics class
Took him over winter and I have to say he was a real gem. He loved what he did and it showed. He taught well and I learned so much from him.
Taking Ling14 this sem, chose Pell bcs of the good reviews, but it's actually not the case. He's not clear with his words; this includes guidelines and lectures, ambiguous choice of words and organization. Basically, very confusing. He often makes mistakes on IPA, and worse, doesn't use a dictionary to check and grade answers. Don't take him.
Professor Pell is amazing he's super engaging with the class, hilarious, entertaining, and can make any boring lecture super interesting. He doesn't ask for much just show up and read what he tells you to read. No homework is given. This class is an Easy A if you just read the content. You can tell he loves what he does and he cares.
LOVED him! He's so funny and cares and listens. go to class and you'll have a good time. looked forward to this class.
I don't see why people would say that he's not a great professor because he far from that. I took LIng12 for spring 2019 and like any class you have to study and read to obtain a good grade. I took him for Ling11 for fall 2018 and I had to study and read like any other of my classes. I'm a Linguistics major student so yes I will suggest him.
Pell is very funny and made each class very enjoyable! Not one of my easiest classes this semester, but I definitely learned a lot! Pell makes learning the material very interesting. If you want the A, be sure to take initiative in clarifying what you don't thoroughly understand ASAP because some of the material, like IPA, takes time to absorb.
He was by far one of the funniest professors I ever came across. I took him for his Monday Linguistics 12 course and I highly recommend him. Your graded on easily A assignments as well as two tests. The final was easier than the midterm! Highly recommend everyone to take him! I learned some interesting stuff in this course because of him!
If you need to take Linguistics 14 for USC, take Professor Pell. I had him over Summer 2020 and he was great! We had work assigned at the beginning of the week and then due Sunday. He gives you 4 hours to take the tests. Weekly IPA assignments that are easy to do. Lots of videos to watch though but I didn't mind. He's very chill and easy!
An amazing professor who cares about his students! His lectures are great and the assignments he posts are fair. I would take him again given the chance. If you need to take Ling 14, please take him! HE is great at what he does and is an amazing supportive teacher.
I was fooled by all of the good reviews this professor had. I took his English 1A class online. He is very unclear with his words, his instructions are not straightforward. When speaking to him he seems like he does not have respect for his students. Read all instructions carefully. He just gives busy work you won't learn anything.
I liked Professor Pell! I think with it being new to remote learning, it was a bit of an adjustment, but it worked! He is very caring and willing to support his students. The class is pretty easy. This is a very good class for a GE and it's quite interesting! I recommend!
I decided to take English Intro and comprehensive with him because of all the great reviews he has. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same. He is extremely unorganized and difficult for him to respond quickly to your emails. Also, the articles he wants you to read are not interesting.
Extremely rude and difficult. Class average for assignments are often C's D's or lower. Grades on accuracy not completion. He's also really cocky and acts like he's above everyone lol. He definitely is not easy, you can get an A by working really hard, but for a class that you're just taking to transfer, it's not worth.
At first I thought he was a really harsh grader bc of the IPA translation assignments, but it wasn't so bad once I got the hang of the class & realized I was just bad at translations. He is an easy grader for tests tho. This class is really lecture heavy. Like just watching videos. (has monotone voice) But good for credit so I recommend!
At first, I thought that he was mean & I believed all the reviews because he was tough on grading the IPA translations and gave passive-aggressive advice. However, don't let that discourage you! The class was super interesting & the lectures and videos he provided were helpful. The class became more fun as it went on. I enjoyed it a lot after that!
Took him for summer and it was pretty manageable. He uses a point system which is very nice, IPA can sometimes be tough but overall not that much he. He grades the tests VERY EASY and lenient. Just watch his lecture videos, all the answers are there. It is an easy A if you do all the assignments and watch the lectures.
I found Prof Pell to be a kind and caring professor, he was clear about grading and the class was an easy A as long as you did all your assignments on time. The times I went to office hours he was always very helpful and went the extra mile to make sure I understood the material.
Professor Pell is very nice! His assignment arent extremely hard and the workload is manageable. The only hard part was the final. He cares about the mental well being of his students. However, do not turn in any assignments late and watch all lectures/videos.
The class was asynchronous so I can't really say much about his teaching style, but the class was fairly easy. One thing I can say is don't turn in assignments late as he isn't lenient with it. Exams were easy; there wasn't a final.
Great lectures full of everything you need to know in order to succeed in this course. Submit assignments on time and schedule office hours in advance if needed. I would take this class again, however, Professor Pell succeeds in preparing students for the next level of linguistics and understanding the English language.
Professor Pell is such a cool and fun person. I took him for ENGL01A and he is so nice and so understanding. If there's an English class you want to take and want to have a laugh every once in a while, take his class! There are some essays we are assigned and it's required to go to tutoring for full credit, but overall it's simple work!
Professor Pell was an amazing professor. He is a very funny guy. He is very lenient. If you are an honor student, you should take his class, especially in person. The only thing that was hard was his IPAs, which I am bad at. Overall, I enjoyed his class. Don't believe the negative reviews.
Prof. Pell's Ling 014H was an amazing course to take along difficult stem courses. He was very kind and most of his lectures were fun. He is really passionate about this subject and isn't afraid to stay on a topic and explain it until the class understands. FYI, the honors project was a research paper regarding one of the topics we saw in class.
In addition to the lectures and textbook reading, the professor uses many YouTube videos and TedTalks to help explain the material. One thing that I appreciated was the way the textbook reading was split up. Each week, we were required to read about 5 pages from the textbook which helped me to get through it and not be overwhelmed by the work load.
Professor Pell was nice. There was a lot of work to do, but he was a pretty easy grader for the most part. Do all the work, and you should be fine. Class lightened up big time after midterms which was nice. Take his class if you don't mind doing some long annoying work, you will get an A as long as you do it.
This course is asynchronous so attendance is tracked with assignments and discussion posts. He made everything straightforward for the content, and the tests are simple if you watch the lectures (no book needed but recommended). He doesn't accept late work unless you have technical issues. I recommend him if you want a fast and doable class.
Great Professor! Easy class! I took a summer class online. There were two essays and one research paper. He gives feedback and answers all emails right away. Highly recommend for English 001A.
Took the 6 week online class and it was extremely easy. Grade mainly consist of small homework assignments that take about 5-10 minutes each and 2 essays and 1 research paper. Only reason for the 4/5 rating is that he doesn't take late work at all.
Absolutely adored this class and loved Professor Pell! Responded to my canvas messages quickly and was always incredibly clear and concise in instruction! Reading the textbook and watching the lectures gives you all the info you need for the quizzes and exams! Focus on developing your understandings of hypotheses and concepts :)
Amazing teacher. take if you want to laughs and great lessons.
Prof. Pell gives amazing lectures. You just have to pay attention during class and you'll be fine, he goes over everything so well that you could technically get away with not watching the videos or doing the reading but just do it anyway. He's also really funny and gets back to canvas messages in a timely manner. Definitely take his class.
He's really fun, you learn a lot and as long as you do the work (which is pretty easy) you'll get an A. The one bad thing was he said that attendance wouldn't matter on the syllabus and first week of class but then added it to our grades on the last week of class! It didn't impact me too bad but wasn't cool of him to add that in at the last minute.
Prof. Pell's class is super easy, but he can be confusing. He's funny but can get easily carried away by conversations in class and lose track of teaching. The work he assigns is easy, the hardest part is just the IPA translations. Just double-check with him on assignment deadlines and requirements, do your work on time and you'll be fine.
This class is very simple as you are learning how the English language came to be. The quizzes he gives you should take up to 5 minutes so long as you've been paying attention and the two finals are recitations of the lord's prayer in old English and middle English (not a religious class). He's a very funny guy as well which is a good bonus on top.
requires 6 sentences for all discussion posts, the course wasn't as interesting as i thought it was going to be, kind of annoying, if you can take someone else or a different ge in general take it
A tough grader, but has very clear criteria. As long as you follow all of the directions, you will receive a good grade. He is willing to help you if you reach out, especially with IPAs. Only problem I had was the discussion posts. The first response due date isn't shown in the calendar so it gets a little confusing. Other than that, pretty good!
The class started out difficult but got better later. If you're taking a lot of credits, it can be a bit difficult. He's picky with grading translations, but besides that, the class was not too bad. He responds to emails fast, and if you put in effort, you'll do fine! Also make sure to check due dates because late assignments lose points.
I usually drift thought GEs because I find them irrelevant, but this guy's class is interesting! Easy, very manageable workload too. If you're taking a lot of units but need to get some GEs out of the way, take this guy. The assignments are easy, and he gives 3 hours for the quizzes! His prerecorded lectures are also super digestible.
Be very careful of deadlines as he isn't lenient at all with that. You have to really make sure you read the directions for the assignments because he's very specific on what he wants. Other than that it was pretty easy. Just make sure you pay attention to the due dates of the discussions as there are usually two parts. Gave plenty of time on tests
easy A as long as you watch the lectures and do your work
*I took ENGL 011* Heavy on memorization but LOTS of practice, along with a lot of videos. He did a great job of explaining more difficult concepts in simple terms with fun examples to make sure we understood them. I am personally more quiet, but he made a very comfortable atmosphere that made me feel comfortable asking any questions I had.
Took Eng 001A Online for summer session, Pell gave us a heads up how it's basically his 16-week course but condensed. A lot of small assignments but they end up helping and they don't actually take too long to do. Prepare for the essays and research. He doesn't do late turn-ins unless emergency circumstances and you give him a heads-up.
He has very clear criteria and deadlines for assignments, and if you follow them this class in an easy A. His online lectures, although long, are really easy to follow and he lectures in a way that makes the content enjoyable. The IPA assignments were pretty fun, and his tests are an easy A if you pay attention and take good notes.
He gives a lot of group work in this class and you have to participate if you want him to know you care. Don't just ditch, he likes it when you're responsible and he won't give you extensions all the time so get stuff done on time. homework is really easy and the final is a group presentation in from of the class. Easy grader and he's pretty funny.
Beware of deadlines - he doesn't give extensions or accept latework. His lectures are good but the IPA confuses people so be ready to study that. The homework is manageable and the quizzes are online and open book/note. Go to his office hours, he's friendly and helpful.
Taking his class for 6-weeks for Linguistics, I actually had a great experience. As long as you watch the lectures, turn in your homework on time, and study for the exams. You should be fine! Through online, it was overall a really fun class. Quizzes are mostly free responses, but he gives you a lot of time to do it!! 9.6/10. No late work accepted.
Since I took this as a winter course, the material was all condensed which is why it seemed like so much so fast. But I'm sure if it was a regular course it would have been way smoother sailing. Besides the course, the prof himself is funny, good at teaching, and actually cares about his students. I'd take again
I had some difficulty getting adjusted to his grading criteria, but part of that had to do with the class being online. He teaches from his own material, so make sure you take good notes and you will be fine. By the end, it's stress free.
This class is not a walk in the park, but you can easily stay on top of it and get an A by submitting each assignment on time. He has very clear grading criteria, ensures that students manage their time, and gives good feedback. You also learn something from each assignment. Just manage your time, and you'll be fine. Take him!
This class was very fun to take and he always had the greatest lectures. His quizzes and assignments are very easy to do. Attendance is also very crucial along with tardies. His class is very engaging and you learn a lot about the English language.
Everyone should take a class with Dr. Pell. He's very informative, clear about what he expects in class, and very accessible. His linguistics class requires a lot of reading and paying attention to his lectures, but once you learn it, all the assignments become easy. Manage your time well, as he doesn't take late work. Super interesting class.
Overall this was a fun class to take. It was not too difficult but you must do all the assignments but they do require time and effort, and make sure they are DONE ON TIME. His grading criteria is pretty strict, but he grades pretty loosely. Honors paper is not too bad especially if you choose a topic that you enjoy. Overall easy class with effort.
Dr. Pell is an excellent professor. He is very passionate and informative. He expects a lot from you and does not take in any late work. Just manage your time, and you'll be fine. Read the textbook, too. Very insightful class, and I'll be majoring in linguistics because of this guy!
Very quick grader and the tests are fairly simple if you watch the lectures or do the readings. He is a tough grader on the IPA translations but once those are over, it was fairly easy to earn full points for other assignments. He doesn't accept any late work at all so manage your time wisely and don't procrastinate!!
Professor Pell's LING014 class is well-structured and engaging. While it requires diligent work, the clear grading criteria and helpful lectures make it manageable. Unstuck AI was a great study tool alongside the textbook. Just stay on top of assignments, and you'll likely earn an A.
He has a textbook that you have to read, and the online course is made up of a lot of videos. IPA transcriptions are hard; otherwise the test and quizzes are easy to get full marks. I won't take this class again as it was not what I expected, a lot of terminology, defining linguistic terms.
Dr. Pell is an amazing professor. He is caring, hilarious, and honestly a pretty easy A. I took his class during an intersession and although it was stressful towards the end, it was definitely doable and he grades very leniently (I ended with a 97). Highly recommend if you want an easy A while still learning with a great professor!
Took this over the winter and actually had an enjoyable time! Assignments are based on lectures, the textbook, and assigned videos, so be prepared to take notes. Fairly simple free-response quizzes with a lot of time to complete them. Late work isn't accepted. Currently planning on minoring in linguistics because of this class!
Didn't know lobotomy patients still existed! Not tech savvy, plenty of typos in the Canvas slides. Not very clear instructions sometimes (unwritten rules), and even less clear communication at times. They say those who cannot do teach, here we have someone not good at either. I plan to attend his Alma Mater for a free PhD.
I took his Ling 14 for a 6 week class, so the workload made sense, but Prof. Pell didn't. He will not accept late work what-so-ever, not even a minute late even if it wasn't your fault. He does not respond to emails or submission comments, and his feedback is extremely minimal. Avoid this professor, I should have dropped his class in the first week
This professor acts like his class is more important than it really is. Lingustics is an irrelevant major and should be treated as such. He takes NO late work, people have lives he clearly does not. He is quite rude with some of his remarks and his lectures are outdated. He needs to structure his class better, I got points off IPA when I COPIED him
He doesn't answer emails, grades very harshly, and gave me an aggressive AI accusation with a zero and a warning, with no explanation at all, even though I didn't use AI.A wrong due date was fixed without acknowledging the confusion. I regret taking this class. I would pick a different professor.
