You will probably learn more about harmony from Steve than any other teacher in the school. Extremely knowledgeble, intelligent, very analytical, and full of great insight. I've taken all of the harmony electives after Harmony 4 with him and they have all been some of the best classes I've taken.

EXTREMELY INSPIRING

I studied with a lot of teachers, and found none who understood harmony better than Steve. He's not the easiest grader, but he's a good teacher and he doesn't try to give you a hard time. If you want to breeze the course, there are better choices. If you want to learn harmony, Steve is your man.
I thought I knew harmony. Boy was I wrong. I learned so much stuff from his class. Totally inspiring and all around great guy.

Hard, but good. I learned a ton but I got a C. In Harmony 1-3 I learned little and got A's. So yeah.
Steve will be one of the most challenging professors you'll ever take, but you won't regret taking his class if you're interested in the material. I learned more from his class than from any other teacher, book, or class I've ever had. Rochinski's the man!
Steve is a genius. Hes one of the best teachers I have ever had, and really drills the material into your head in an interesting and stimulating way. He is also a very nice guy...he was willing to give me free hour long lessons during his office hours. hes a great guitarist too.
If you want to learn, this is your man! Great guy! Wants your best, no less. Go Steve!
Steve is clearly a great musical mind, but as a teacher, he was inconsistent. While he was always well-prepared and full of commentary, he could also be quite irritable and difficult to access outside of class. He was recovering from surgery, which probably accounted for some of this, but I guess I had hoped for more.
Had him for Advance Modal Harm & Harm4. Hard not to respect the guy, dedicated his life to harmony. Full of great insight. On the other hand, will go off on quasi-mystical tangents about harmony that are cool, but not very useful. Arrogant and doesn't like to be disagreed with. You will learn a lot, but to like him you'll have to be a harmony nerd
the only way you'll enjoy his class is if you love harmony and love to get poor grades.
very strict grader. Passionate about material but not about students. Arrogant as hell and unfriendly. Knows his stuff though.
A true harmony expert, excellent in his field. Tends to be very set in his ways and refuses to be questioned. He's one of the toughest professor you'll come across but not the most approachable or understanding one at the same time.
too strict
great musician + bad teacher = dont take his class
One of my best classes was always Harmony. I figured I would take Steve since he wrote the book. Big Mistake! He knows his stuff really well but he doesn't know how to teach. Hes never prepared adequately compared to other teachers. This was the first class I got a C in. I don't know how since my test/project grades were better? Take someone else!
doesn't know how to encourage students, expects too much from students and if you're not at faculty level, you'll get a C. what a jerk
He knows his stuff, I'll say that. However, he doesn't explain things simply; he;ll use harm4 concepts to explain a harm2 question! I went to him during his office hour and when I told him I didn't get anything he was saying in class he asked why I was coming to see him, instead of going to a tutor. 3 words: mean, unhelpful, but smart
impatient, rude, cocky and arrogant. If you are grade-conscious and not at faculty level, avoid at all cost.
Avoid at all cost. I know for a fact that he made his students take a quiz in which he gave them a leadsheet with some missing chords and forced them to go see his girlfriend's recital to fill in the blanks (the leadsheet was from a tune his girlfriend played at her recital, who happens to be a Berklee student). This guy should be fired promptly.
This guy is extremely arrogant and mean. He does not how to teach, and he has a galactic point of view about music that only makes sense to him. Be smart. Do not waste your money. Do not take him.
I had to forfeit $900 in tuition when I withdrew from his class. But that was the best decision I have made in my life.
This is a teacher who will teach you anything you want to know about harmony. He knows everything there is to know. If you want to be prepared for a professional career in music, I recommend you take one of his classes. If you don't want to put in the work, don't even attend music school, let alone his class.
rochinski is the man. best teacher i have had at berklee. he knows his stuff and if you ask him to explain something he will. ive had him for all of my harmony classes so far and have done well. all you have to do is pay attention and take notes and the class will be easy.
Here's the deal: he's a harmony GENIOUS. and like every genious, there's gotta be something wrong in his head, and that would be his attitude. Sometimes rants too much about a subject without explaining much or just throws info at you. Take him only if you want to be a JazzComp major or something like that, otherwise, DON'T. IT'S SUICIDE.
I must disagree with the previous comment. He definetely ISN'T a genious of harmony... I think he doesn't know much about it...
He made a subject I love into a painful learning experience. Several classes in a row he would show up late, or not at all which I feel shows infinite disrespect for the students. He would go off on random, unrelated tangents. He appears to know what hes talking about, he just has no idea how to relay that to a class.
I just saw comments between 2005 and 2006 are awesome, and since 2007 everybody hates him. I can now confirm that it's all his divorce's fault. That was actually my worst class, but if you get to know him, he's not that bad! Let's trust he will rearrange his marriage and be a good teacher again. At the moment, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Professor Rochinski is a deep expert on music theory and he's an amazing composer. You will learn a ton just being in the same room with this guy. Sometimes he can be a little intimidating, but for me that edge just made me work harder - so I learned more. If you are serious about learning music theory and harmony, I would recommend him.
Pretty decent guy. His music is terrible, but you can learn something from the class material... you just need to use discretion when applying the techniques. I found myself respecting him even though his compositions are pretty god-awful. Worth taking if you want to fill a couple credits.
A very knowledgeable and intelligent teacher, especially in harmony and music theory stuff. Often used elevated, advanced terminology & words to describe things to the students which sometimes throw them off. Also, you will only have very limited amount of time to do your project
He is the man! so knowledgeable and so passionate~ take him if u are keen to learn. Much respect!
I think I've figured it out. Steve is a great teacher for advanced classes but not beginners. He talks fast and doesn't like to explain background, which wasn't great for my class of first-semester HARM2 students who were desperately trying to figure out what the hell "interpolated minor" and such things were. Once you know your stuff, though...
A great teacher, but not for students who do not take the subject of harmony seriously. If you put in the time and effort, show up, pay attention, and conduct yourself in an intelligent manner in class, you will have a great experience with this Rochinski.
Steve is a brilliant harmony man that will explain to you absolutely fascinating harmonic concepts that aren't in your class's curriculum. I know more about poly modal polychords than I do about harmony 4. So if you're good at harmony and don't need someone spelling out the curriculum, take Steve. If you want someone by the book, don't.
BEST TEACHER IN BERKLEE, studying with him is an life changing harmonic experience BEWARE: If you are studying here because John Mayer Did, and even if you suck on your instrument you have been accepted because you are rich, don't take him, leave that seats open for musicians!
Great!!! No comment, Steve is the best but his class is extremely tough!
Uses hyper-academic language. Foreign students beware. Generally makes harmony more complicated than it needs to be. Does not respond well to students struggling to understand. *Assigned final project 4 days before due date!! Not cool. On the up side, he spends the entire hour on task. No digressions about "this one gig I did." Intense.
Extremely difficult. I never had problems in harmony before. With him I was lost and I lost interest. He makes it a nightmare.
Difficult guy to understand because he uses very big words. Probably not for beginning harmony students. Teaches harmony 3 stuff in harmony 2 class. Uses the supplementary workbook pretty often. If you really know your stuff, you could benefit from taking a more advanced class with him.
If you are at Berklee to honestly learn the fundamentals of music, this man is a genuis. Yes, he uses big words. Yes, he will call you out if you don't follow his directions. He is brutally honest because he cares a lot. Just do the work he assigns and you will have such a solid musical foundation for any other class. Highly recommend him.
This guy is theeeee maaaaan! totally transform my mind and ears! he gives explanation of everything in the clearest way! I am not into jazz at all! but his class was life-changing! if you really love theory and want to involve with it into its deepest levels! take this guy! amazing big words! amazing descriptions!
Not for the struggling student. Only take this guy if you already have a very good sense of Advanced Jazz Harmony Concepts.
Had Steve for HR4 and Reharm. Simply put, the dude's a genius. However, he is extremely intense, uses academic language that could easily confuse a subpar English speaker, and gives little to no feedback on your work. The trade-off, though, is getting your mind blown every class.Take him if you LOVE the subject he's teaching, avoid him if you don't.
His teaching style consists on trying to impress you with how much he knows, so the focus is on him and not on the student. Gives the directions for midterm and final projects just a few days before they are due. Not a good teacher
I've taken Ear Training Harmony 4, Advanced Harmonic Concepts and Advanced Modal Harmony with the gentleman. I can say without a doubt if you're serious about learning take him. He makes you think in different ways, especially in the advanced classes, he throws out 'theory' and makes you think about music.
This is by far the worst harmony teacher in the world. There is way you can complete his test in time and he gives you a project in the finals week. DONT TAKE THIS GUY!
I attended Berklee but had Steve online. Hardest-working prof you will ever meet. Intellectual, great lecturer. Hardest challenge of my career. Firm, serious, very fair. Excellent guitarist. Course is not for the weak. Extremely high standards. Course designed to perfection. Will set ypu straight very fast if you screw off. Show respect get respect
As a harmony geek, I adored learning from Steve. However, I can understand how he would be a frustrating teacher from the perspective of someone who has trouble with harmony or from the perspective of a non-native English speaker. His dialect includes some heavy vocabulary. We didn't use the textbooks much, and I didn't feel I was missing them.
Shows Off his "Theory Talent", Rude, No Clarity, No Feedback, No Help... oh and boring.
I could call myself a harmony geek before the class, but he me lose interest. He was explaining things that could be exlained clearly in 10 minutes, in two classes, and that was confusing for me and some other friends. He is a kind, respectable professor but not a good teacher for me at all.
I think he's an amazing musician and composer. It's inspirational listening to him. However, it's hard to grasp the concepts he explains in class. So it's hard to get a good grade in his class and do very well. But if you're already good at harmony, you should definitely take him.
I had Steve for Harmony 3 and he proved that he knows so much in this field. That being said, his way of transmitting his knowledge is far from what call clear. As a person who loves jazz harmony, he challenged me to a point where I almost got disgusted with my passion. You really need to work (or be Duke Ellington) if you want to pass!
Most every class with Steve was mind-blowing. I am so happy that I had the chance to study with him.
Steve is a harmony genius. His system of analysis is incredibly practical and understandable. It's also, however, not the standard for Berklee, so watch out when using his methods in other Harmony classes. He is well-spoken and very intelligent. His clunky piano playing may slow down class, but that's a minor grievance. His grading is disorganized.
Seriously amazing lectures. I had a harmony class with another prof my 1st sem and hated it. Someone recommended Rochinski and I was so into his teaching I took him for 3 and 4. This guy approaches the study in the most logical, reasoned way, and you can have a real discussion without being shot down and pointed toward just what the book says.
The best harmony teacher, Im taking his Harmony 3 right now, every class has been mind blowing. Love him! You must take him if you really wanna learn
I had Steve as a teacher when I attended Berklee in 1997 and 1998. He really knows his stuff and explains it very well. Very clever and funny though a little detached towards foreign students like myself. You need to understand music to enjoy him.
He missed a couple of classes. Very knowledgeable about the content but he was very disorganized.
Mr. Rochinsky's encyclopedical knowledge about harmony is just fascinating! His lessons were deep, logical, and inspirational. His classes were a great influence and motivation for my further studies in related topics. I think, his book "Harmony 4" is one of the best books in the field. I loved his humor as well.
He's extremely intelligent, but not a good match for someone who finds the material difficult. His explanations are way too complicated for a beginning Harmony 1 course; I struggled a lot in his class.
Lectures were always confusing. All the students in my class would always gather together after class and try to interpret what just happened. I felt like he wasn't in tune with the students in his class.
He is very knowledgeable, but not a good instructor.
Don't take him if unless you want to spend the whole class discussing philosophy instead of basic harmony concepts. I struggled in my successive harmony classes because he didn't teach me the foundational content. He would talk about Harmony 4 concepts in Harmony 2. For the final project he told us to just give him our Arranging 1 project to grade
The worst, rudest, meanest, helpless, teacher I have ever had. For a teacher the only thing he hasnt done is taught us about Harmony 4.
The first few weeks were easy, but then the work really came in on the latter half of the class. Reached out multiple times for any help or guidance and I'd actually get made fun of by him for some of my answers. Who does that? I'm new to theory and took longer than most students to grasp concepts but that was funny to him, I guess.
Steve is full of knowledge and is a solid player, but his classes aren't very good. He barely explains anything at all, and goes really REALLY fast. I have so many questions. I tried emailing him about office hours but he wouldn't respond. Also he never uses the class website for some reason. His material gets mixed up with the junk from the email.
Literally the worst professor Ive had at Berklee. You can tell that he is a very knowledgeable guy, but is a horrible teacher. Very unclear about assignments and due dates, and on top of it, he doesnt even wear his mask correctly.
Worst teacher I've had at Berklee. Did not give back a single graded assignment (nor did he ever give back the midterm), so everybody could have been failing for all we know. Very unclear about the curriculum, never used the textbook. Doesn't use the OL, so everything feels incredibly unorganized, and you never have any idea where you are in class.
He is a great musician. English is a second language for me and I thought it's hard for me to understand him sometimes because of it, but I think his explanations was hard for native speakers too. Anyway, if you are into music it's a very good experience to take his class. He gives all materials and if you are hardworking you can pass it easily.
mostly assigns work by his word-of-mouth as we're all leaving. assignments are all on paper, doesn't use OL, has held on to them the whole semester. i don't know my grade. snidely dismissive of less-complex music, and disrespected our time by giving us the final as a take-home on the last day of finals week, expecting us to do it over the weekend.
Horrible, ego-inflated professor with no respect for students or the tuition they pay to be there. Consistently showed up late, rarely prepared, constantly forgetful of lectures, and taught curriculum inconsistent with the exams and other courses. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU ARE AN LGBTQ STUDENT. Berklee should fire Steve Rochinski.
Damn. If there's one thing I learned from this class, it must be that I don't actually love jazz composition. It straight killed my hesitation about whether I should focus on jazz stuff. If you feel like a jazz genius yourself, and you want to have a jazz career, take his AHC class and you'll figure it out. It's good for you either way.
Worst professor in Berklee. Uses all this weird terms when talking about harmony and never relates to them in a musical context. Makes studying harmony feel like studying math. Never follows the curriculum
Simply the best, but don't take his class if you don't understand harmony and aren't ready to work your ass off.
Disregarding your email correspondence, frequently cancel classes at the beginning of sem so there's not enough time to finish the material in the syllabus. Show up late, not prepared, and NO lecture AT ALL!!! Never ever focused on the subject matter and only discussing irrelevant matters, tests given are extremely difficult. AVOID HIM ASP!!!
the worst professor I have ever had 10/10. he would make up his own terms because he cowrote the harmony curriculum. he wasn't understanding about missing a class for a gig even if you let him now in advanced. he would also raise his voice at students. trust me beware of this prof.
Consistently late to class, did not use the ol, gave the midterm a week late, not the worst professor, but would not take him again if I had the choice.
Polite, respectful, attentive, encouraging, intent on you understanding the material. Teaches in a manner that introduces you to novel ways of learning. Provides helpful feedback, additional materials, thoughts, advice to reinforce coursework. Intellectual teacher. This professor is why you go to college.
Steve himself is a very intelligent person; he definitely knows a lot about the harmonic concepts. However, I wasn't sure if he was a good TEACHER, as he was quite unorganized with a lot of things like having unclear instructions about assignments, or pulling up to class late very often.
Worst core music prof I've ever had at Berklee. He clearly knows a lot about harmony, but he is a very boring and unorganized teacher. Not only are his lessons hard to focus on, but he's also very unclear. He would keep us in class about 10 minutes longer than the class was supposed to last. Truly a pain both physically and mentally to be there.
He didn't follow the syllabus; instead, he taught in his own way, always choosing challenging words and teaching methods that were hard to understand. I had to ask the tutor for help. The assignments were pretty chill, though. Phones were not allowed in class.
Steve is a horrible teacher, and just really bad at explaining things. He wrote the textbook but doesn't even use it, instead giving you a million handouts and email documents to read. He often contradicts what he says in his own textbook. He uses overly verbose language that only serves to confuse people. He is super disorganized. Avoid him.
He's a bit of a character, for sure, but he's a genius. I learned more in Harmony 4 Entering than in any other class I've ever taken. The only assignments we had were the midterm and the final, which was kind of terrifying because of how hard the class was. Highly highly highly recommend taking one of his classes at some point.
Don't take him. No homework or projects were ever assigned and the midterm and final were take-home. This may seem great but I learned nothing. Grading was never clear and he never learned our names. Once Steve assigned us to read the entire Harm2 textbook and come back to next class with questions so that he wouldn't have to actually review it.
If you are a harmony geek like me, and if you are looking for a teacher who is a wise, renaissance man who has a very deep understanding and hearing of music; you must participate in one of his classes and you must ask questions. If you are curios enough, there is chance your life can change. I'm a strong admirer and my life has changed forever.
Steve is a very intelligent person and clearly an expert in his field. If you're not soft, and actually want to get down on his level, and you have a head on your shoulders, he's an amazing prof. He's also understanding and accommodative. Great experience.
I took reharm online - I'm now reviewing every lecture, he really does have such a great approach to harmony, I hope one day to be able to be at his level. I wouldn't say it's easy but there is a lot to learn from him.
