World Religion History - He is very interesting/intelligent
Dr. Sabol isn't an easy teacher, but one will learn a lot in his class.
Comedian with alot of knowledge.
Very smart and very flexible... I learned a lot.
Excellent professor, very knowledgable, class doesnt usually last the whole time
Flexible, laid back, likes take home research essays, good guy!
good teacher but hard class
He's smart funny & an all-around good guy Nonstop notes but class gets out early
Great speaker, intresting, and Funny. Watch out for the essays, but great class
Very funny and entertaining. Be sure to get along with your TA's or you won't do good in the class. Prof is good. Keep up with notes!
You take a lot of notes. They grade the test hard. Take this class if you're a good writer. Get to know the TA's. The TA's can be helpful and will look over your exams if you do them early. Also make sure to look over your notes.
decently interesting class, he knows what he is talking about, spent a good amount of time in Russia, don't write essays on Russian topics , got to TA study sessions can and will help with your final grade, take good notes, use book for essay's (quotes)
very funny guy, getting to know the TAs is a must, they help you so much, take good notes, go to class or impossible to pass. take advantage of having the TA look at your essays before testing. do that and ya got an easy B
His essays are hard, you really need to read the book to do well in his class.
I am having a hard time in this class already. He is all over the place and I (and others)am already confused. I do not see the relevence of alot of the information yet and am writing down everything he says-much of it not making sense. Nice guy though.
Go to all lectures and study all notes, and get help from TAs for writing papers. You'll at least get a B.
very smart professor, knows his stuff very well. great sense of humor, easy going, makes class fun and interesting, has a real passion for his work. tends to get behind in lectures and can go off on tangents, also hates the french!! class + reading = A
very interesting lectures. helpful TA's.
He is awesome & so hilarious! Fair on tests I strongly recommend him!!
Awesome Prof, he was the teacher that helped make my decision to teach. Extremely funny guy, very prepared and knows his stuff. His tests are hard, but if you read than you will do fine. Know the TA's and go to the help sessions.one of the best taken.
No problems with him. Talks straight through class and if he finishes in 10 minutes, class is over. You do have to like his subjects to enjoy his classes, likes details a lot and anything to do with Russia.
No attendance policy. Email him a rough draft of your essays and he'll proof them for you. Be sure to write at least 5/6 pages per question and you'll get an A. Nice guy, funny. Dont wait until the last night to start essays. Book is optional.
Dr. Sabol is a great historian, if you can keep him focused on the class. Maybe this entry level class fails to challenge him. He cancelled way too many classes. The essays were challenging and quiz's every week kept your honest with the reading.
Great professor. I loved this class, learned more about Russia than I ever cared to know but thats okay. Easy B, work a little on the papers and you're sure to get an A. PS, those people that "might" be on the test are ALWAYS on the test, hint
Very funny. Do the readings, take notes, and get help on the papers from the TA's.
If you take him for an upper level class, write at least 10 pages for each take-home exam! The more you write, the better the grade. Clearly knows his material and presents it in a clear manner. Can get sidetracked EASILY & hates the French!
Took for Central Asian history and Intro to Euro Studies. Take home exams are NOT easy, make sure that you have substantial information for those way ahead of time. Not very organized lecture. Made class very interesting though, good professor overall!
Great guy, easy going, very funny. Class is not easy - you must read and take notes. Take home exams require some work for an A. Very un-organized, but passionate about Russia.
Steve Sabol is an awesome teacher, he's a great guy and he'll bend over backwards to help you get a good grade, if he sees effort from you. He's a SigEp alumni...Woo!; so he's cool with greeks. He's not hard if you just do your****. He likes long essay's
I expect lots of reading, but I would prefer that it relates to the class, or even the lectures. He'd be interesting, if you just want some guy to drink with and tell stories. However, his lectures are painfull for those of us who've had good professors.
have had him for 2 classes, great teacher to take and i don't like history that much. expects to understand material. you do have to go to class, read, and write papers. do put some effort. not sure what's going on, his ta's also are helpful
Cool guy who knows his stuff and expects you to know it as well. Tests are fairly tough and essay format, so either you know it or you dont. Animated and relaxed class atmosphere. Recommend him if you're a history major. I'm not, but enjoyed him anyway.
Great teacher, funny...knows what he is talking about, brings up cool facts about traveling to Russia, tests are not hard- just write down what he says in class and anyone should do fine.
I think Dr. Sabol knows everything their is to know about Russia and he wants you to know it too. He is a good lecturer if a little unorganized. Take very good notes as you will need them for the essays and exams. He rewards effort and is very willing to help students.
very very very easy ... teaches nothing ... depends on what you want ... to learn or have a good gpa
Tests are two long essays outside class and 6 short essays in class, but as long as you take good notes they aren't hard. Everything you need to get a good grade is in his lectures. Lays ervything out very well.
lectures are boring, doesn't take attendence, and does occasionally cancel classes. Be forewarned that when he assigns essays and says that all you need to do is to answer the question, what he means is answer it in a four page essay.
BEWARE. I read positive comments on this guy and went to class the first day and thought he sounded cool and laid back. I was WRONG. He is laid back, but is very unclear on what he wants for essays, requires you write 2 4-page essays for each test, and doesnt grade and return the tests for weeks.I ended up with a B, but most of my friends failed.
My favorite professor! I love him, love his class! I took good notes and skimmed the book and ended with and A. If you're really interested in histroy, and want an interesting prof, TAKE HIS CLASS!
Very,Very,Very,Very VERY BORING!!! Only take class if you are super interested in History. It is not your typical history class. He expectes you to know the who, what where when and especially the Why on every topic covered in class. This would be ok if he was interesting.BE WARNED!!!!!!!!!!
Good professor, very clear lectures and helps you with your essays. Class ain't gotta be easy but as long as you read the material, you can make an A in the class. But if you are looking for a lot of in-class discussion don't bother taking his class.
If you have a little common sense, you will do fine in this class
This class was not easy (tests are all very long take home essays then ID terms in class) and in class you just listen to him lecture the whole time. But this guy definitely knows what he's talking about & it's like he's telling you a story. I really really enjoyed him and I learned a lot. Just take good notes. Quizzes come from the book though.
Dr. Sabol is by far one of the most interesting professors ive ever had. He not only has a passion for his subject, but he knows it from front to back. All in all, Sabol kicks ass
Dr. Sabol is one of my favorite history professors at UNCC. His lectures are very clear, and his requirements are fair. If you are interested in the class topic, you'll find it very interesting. I love Russian history, so I never thought Sabol was boring. He's laid back and willing to help students with exams and book reviews. I highly recommend.
Central Asia is not the most interesting to study, but professor Sabol would pour in his knowledge on this field through out the semister. You have to be a good listener because Sabol will run his mouth, which can be a good thing as the exam papers are all based on his lectures. Take his class if you like to listen to history.
I learned allot i probably would not have in sabols class. Come to class and try to write the 6-9 page papers and you will do well
He is a fun professor and interesting lectures. The only problem I have is his grading, which seems to be somewhat random. He does not let you know what he is looking for and his grading can be harsh. He gives 80% effort on his lectures and expects 150% on essay tests. I like the classes I have had with him, but I wouldn't take another.
Sabol hates the french! haha. This man is awesome. He's so personable and actually makes learning about Central Asia somewhat fun. He's full of personal stories and anecdotes. If I weren't graduating, I would take many more classes with him.
Dr Sabol is a damn cool professor. he has a bunch of interesting stories that relate to the material he teaches. You can tell that he has experience with the subject matter. My only complaint would be with how he takes a while to grade papers. Otherwise hes a funny guy with lots of knowledge. Also make sure you ask him about Kazakh feral cats
pure lecture in class. quizes are easy but count only 15%. Exams are 25% each and consist of 2 essays that even a 12 page paper will be a B exam essays are extremely hard and time consuming espically this being a gen ed class. three exams and the first one wasnt even before the add drop date so had no idea it was gonna be like that til was to late
Hard general ed course. He expects a lot out of you and grades harsh. His whole class is lecture. He talks pretty fast and doesn't like to repeat. You can tell he is passionate about the material he teaches. If you're just trying to take this class as an elective, don't do it. It's not an easy grade class.
The class I'm in is supposed to be about genocides and the Holocaust. All he talks about is Russia. His class has nothing to do with his exams, which he expects 20 page essays.
I'm also in the genocide class, and it's clear that he either doesn't like the subject matter or doesn't know jack about it. Whenever he gets himself lost, he'll say "...just like in RUSSIA, when..." and talk about the Soviet Union to regain confidence... which isn't why I took the genocide class.
Also took 3000, 3141. Hist major, and LOVE him. Would take any classes by him. He is tough, you must pay attention and write papers, but you will do well if you just communicate with him, always willing to help, and really knows his stuff. Made me love Russian and Central Asian history! Awesome professor.
if ur a B avg student, you'll do fine. tests are 70% paper and 30% in-class. there's little mini assignments but they're easy and u can just BS them. He gives u exactly what will be on the tests, and papers arent hard if u just answer the topic he gives u correctly. very lenient grader. made WWI pretty interesting. I'd definitely recommend him!
Mr. Sabol is a good teacher but the class is a little challenging. Constantly has class laughing. He has powerpoints but they are very minimal. Test are all research papers. He gives topic month in advance so no reason you shouldnt get a good grade.
Lectures are good, although a bit hard to follow at times. He is however very happy to answer any questions, and explains things well.
really cool teacher. he really likes the subject and makes it interesting. you have take home exams that are 1000 word essays but as long as you write decent you will do alright. i would highly recommend him.
He is an awesome professor. Go to class, you will learn alots materials that he talks about in the class lecture. Take lecture, pay attention and read book. The grade for this class include 3 essays, some abstracts for reading article, and attendence. Feel free to ask the question, he will answer you best he can.
Class is pretty easy, best way to take notes is with your laptop cause he talks fast. 3 written take home exams: expects 10-15 pages and in class portion with 8 definitions of people or events. Go to class, take notes, write long papers and you'll make A/B (it helps to be into history) oh you can sleep in class so just attend
Professor Sabolis really nice and funny. He took a seemingly boring subject and made it interesting. So interesting that I actually want to travel to the places we discussed. He is a relaxed guy. He wants you to simply attend class and turn in your work, he asks nothing more.
Dr. Sabol is awesome. He started this game called diplomacy as part of our grades, it counted as 25%, reducing the 2 essays to 25% each. We didn't use the book at all. Your grade depends on how much you participate in the game and your essays. I didn't read any of the articles or book, just used books from the library and got an A.
Enjoyed his lectures. He is passionate about history and made it interesting for me. He WILL make you work for your grade, reading is required, no tests just papers. He will help you with any questions and you will learn a lot
If you just need this for general education DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. His test are research papers that he expects to be extremely long. You have to read 25 page articles and summarize them and read the text book because he will give quizzes. Attendance is taken everyday and he doesn't uses powerpoints just talks really fast.
Sabol is an amazing teacher and obviously knows what he is talking about, but expect quizzes after a reading assignment. He usually picks the most unusual and weird things to question you on, so if you actually read the content then you should be okay. He only has three major exams where you have to write a take home paper, a lot of work!!
Professor Sabol is a great teacher who knows what he is talking about. He assigns three papers throughout the course that he expects to be approximately 10 pages long, if not longer. In this course you will definitely have to earn your grade, it will not be handed to you.
Worst professor I have had thus far. For a 2000 level course he expects way too much. I am certainly not a history major and his course load was ridiculous for a liberal studies course. Sabol does not give a length for the papers you are required to write but if it is anything less than eight pages you will receive a not so delightful grade.
Sabol is a fantastic professor and an all around great guy, however if lectures aren't your thing this class won't be too great. 3 major papers are the brunt of the work of the class along with short quizzes and analyses of articles and readings from the books. If you're not a history major I would not recommend this class.
Sabol was the hardest professor I have ever had. I worked my ass off and only got a B. I did learn a lot about work ethic and World War I from Sabol though. He is a very intelligent and interesting man though. Students in the class could not keep up with his thought process at times and thought of it as frustrating but I loved his lessons.
Took his HIST2600: Origins of WWI. Tough grader, expects a lot for this course. Would not take him again. He knows the subject well and is willing to help. Am a history major and needed this class. This is the hardest history class I've taken by far.
I overall thought Dr. Sabol was a good professor, nice lectures. Plus, a lot of Soviet humor thrown in. Only graded by few assignments, and tests are essay which make up 25% of your grade each, so make sure you start early and read the textbook. Abstract articles were interesting. I would take another class with him in the future.
If you like learning a lot in your gened courses, this is the right guy for you. His lectures and teaching are very interesting. This is the hardest class I have ever taken and if you do not want that, then do not take this course. I have done every assignment and have a D in the class.
He does not give exams/papers, but gave papers. He does not really have clear expectations for these papers though. He gives a better understanding of the paper like a week before they are due, but by that time you already have a lot written. His lectures are also very scattered. He does go on conferences every so often, so free breaks sometimes.
I would 100% take another course with Dr. Sabol. His tests are take-home essay, which you get more than a month to prepare for each. He is extremely knowledgeable and makes class interesting. His lectures are full of information that really explain what the reading is about. There are abstracts that are also graded. Best professor.
This is my favorite professor I've ever had. I declared my history minor because of him. There are 3 papers in the class, which are extensive. A few extra assignments here and there but the papers are really the grade. His lectures really help with writing the papers and understanding the material. I would 100% take him again and always recommend.
Prof Sabol is easily the worst professor Ive had at my time at UNCC! He is chronologically behind on grading, has no rubric or guidelines for bigger assignments (yet still grades harshly and doesnt even provide feedback on these!). Lectures are horribly boring with unedited slides. and during the pandemic, all of our assignments were due at 5pm
I was so excited for this class at first; he clearly really cared ab it which made me care. That said, his assignments are vague and give no guidance as to what he expects. There's no real rubric to go from so assignments are whatever you interpret. He grades so harshly without a clear rubric and no explanation as to what is wrong or needs fixed.
Let me be the person to stop you from taking this course. This course is great if you are history buff, but get ready for a ride like none other. I myself love history and after this I have decided to never look at this material again. There are three exams which are long extensive papers. If you are looking for a mediocre LBST, DO NOT TAKE THIS!
I am not at all surprised by his rating, as previous students have mentioned, do yourself a favor and take another class or take it at a later time. Youll regret making the decision to be in his class. His exams are take home, but you've been warned theyre difficult and no feedback is given except for the terrible grade youll likely to receive.
I was expecting a walk in the park class for a LBST but what I got was three long essays that absolutely mentally destroy you. Each paper is expected to be around 9 pages long and take days to complete. The teacher also doesn't give feedback on assignments. You can get a 60% on one assignment and there would be no feedback. Do not take this class.
Professor Sabol is very nice but his course load is a little insane. For an LBST course, it is a lot of work. The papers are very time-consuming but the prompts are pretty easy. His lectures are very long and the articles we have to read are too.
He is a great professor its just his papers. He does not have create rubrics for his papers that make up the midterm and the final exam. Finally, he does not tell you how long the papers should be. When writing these papers, I would suggest at least 9 pages because he likes them real long. Would not recommend for this reason. Papers are a pain.
Would not recommend this professor and very perplexed as to how he has such a high rating on this site. There are no exams, only papers and discussion posts, no clear grading criteria. Sources for papers have to be pre-approved by him before use. No extra credit. Overall, it was a challenge to get through this class without failing
I took Dr. Sabol's class to coincide with a paper I was writing about Afghanistan for another class. Don't get me wrong - he assigns a lot. I did multiple upon multiple papers that took up a ton of time. But I've never met a professor who's so willing to work with you if you just reach out to him.
He's a nice enough guy, and he makes his lectures at least some what interesting, but there is an essay due almost every week. He does a weird thing where everything is due at noon instead of 11:59 or the start of class so you should try and get all work done the day before. Tests are also essay heavy, so just be prepared for that.
Charismatic, fun to listen to his lectures. Old school in the best way. Not the quickest grader and doesn't leave a whole lot of feedback. Overall enjoyable class and interesting subjects. Would recommend.
Professor Sabol is pretty cool and has interesting lectures, but your mainly graded on abstracts, essays, and the exams. There are only a few of each of these so not many opportunities to raise your grade. Lectures can feel long as the information isn't posted online, but just keep on track and don't fall behind.
Professor Sabol is an alright professor, he is very passionate about the lectures he gives which are great but if you think this is an easy LBST class you are WRONG. He is super lecture-heavy and rarely posts slides, his essay topics are straightforward but have no specific rubric. Also, be prepared to read 20-30 pages+ for the abstract article.
Super chill dude, he's really funny and understanding, he'll likely give you an extension or whatever you need if you ask politely. The class is pretty easy, just don't fall behind on assignments, there's not that many and tests are weighted very heavily. I only got a C because I missed 2 assignments at the beginning of the semester.
Makes the elective class most difficult. Gives like 8-10 pages of essay for exams which is worth 100 points and gives 10 HW assignement which is worth 5 points each. Math doesn't make sense. DON'T TAKE HIM
If you're bad at writing, don't take this class. Weekly writing assignments of 2 pages, 3 papers of 10 pages, and 3 open answer tests that he grades extremely hard. The papers and assignments are graded easily IF you follow the criteria. If you do one thing wrong on the rubric, you could get a 0 on a test. Mostly just rambles in lectures.
I have had Dr. Sabol twice now. He doesn't demand attendance but the more you attend the better. You usually write anywhere from 2-3 papers along with small reading assignments/questions. Lectures are fun and you can tell he knows a lot about history, and in moments that he doesn't, he willingly admits it. He seems like a really chill guy.
Best teacher I've had so far at UNCC. I took his Cold War History 1502 class and he turned the Cold War history topic into something enjoyable even for those not crazy into the topic. He places great emphasis on his essays and takes them very seriously and also doesn't give any feedback on them. Pretty light on homework too (besides the essays)
The professor is engaging, but the workload is heavy. Lots of essays and exams - Unstuck study proved a great study aid to manage the content. Overall, a challenging class, but doable with consistent effort.
had to drop his class cause he did not give me feedback on any assignments. I asked for feedback on them, He said he would send me an email. I asked sent him multiple emails, but he never responded to me. The worst part is I got a 5/10 on the first summary and a 9/10 on the second summary. I didn't change how I did my work, but he graded different
Sabol is obviously a very well informed man on all things history and often times he has extra conversations to add onto the class. His lectures are clear he can be funny. Grading is tough and require lots of reading through documents to be able to finish assignments.
Dr. Sabol is a very knowledgeable professor and will go into great detail about the events in the Cold War. His lectures gave a lot of useful info for exams, and he will answer any questions you have. You have 3 essay exams, 5 summaries, and some discussion posts. As long as you pay attention, you should do well in the class.
Dr. Sabol is a chill professor however he does expect you to do your work and you really have to pay attention to his lectures and you may want to ask questions because that's what he prefers as he says he doesn't like to ramble on and on, just be prepared to do a ton of writing and try to be thorough as you can, he is accommodating if necessary.
Professor Sabol is very educated on the topic and is very passionate about his lectures. His grading is questionable. I am not 100% sure he went over some of my assignments before grading them. He also does not give any sort of feedback. Assingments aren't very hard though if you do your readinds you will be okay.
