Good Prof, always willing to help to find a way to solve the problem
Know your definitions, word for word!!!
Very intelligent but tests/quizes/labs/grading were not fair
Know every deff. word for word. His Maple labs will kill your grade.
answers q's with a q, assumes you know too much, not willing to help
labs are impossible, knows his stuff, nice guy
Thinks this class is an SWS and makes things way to hard. Confusing and boring!
Math tests in essay format, be sure to know definitions, plug & chug unimportant
Very arrogant, labs and lectures redundant, and grading is unfair.
You are graded too heavily on exploritory material, this class is a GPA killer.
test's are not bad - labs are impossible - let's you use a cheat sheet
aweful! Made me feel like an idiot! Never answered questions.
Dr. Schlicker is not a pushover, but you will learn in his class.
he is pretty nice but he is very hard and he does not answer your questions
He does not answer questions very well, and he is not helpful.
He's alright til you answer a Q wrong, and then treats you like an idiot.
be preparerd to go to class and study, a lot of writing and knowing terms
He is very unhelpful with questions and a Very Hard Grader. Don't Take him
His class sucks. If you get stuck with him, leave immediately!!!!!
Good Teacher, math is tough, subject is tough. he is tough; but you will LEARN!

Professor since the class average is 60 can we have a curve? No
Go to his office and he will help. Otherwise forget it.
Very tough prof. Not willing to help you. Lecture doesn't help with homework

He is the WORST teacher you will ever have!!! Drop ASAP!!!
Nice enough, just doesn't explain things well.
Most unhelpful professor I have ever had. He is also rude. He thinks he's God.
HE IS HORRIBLE! Quote from him: It doesn't matter what you write on the evaluation because I have tenure and I am already promoted as high as I want. If you go in for help, he tells you should already know how to do the things you ask about.
He is a HARD Prof. Don't take him. He trys to help, but doesn't do a good job helping you. He's horrible, mean, and an easy D.
Dont take this class...he's inconsiderate and thinks he knows everything.
Stay away! Impossible to get an A. Very tough grader, not very helpful. RUN AWAY!
I don't understand why everyone says he is so bad. I found Dr. Schlicker to be very helpful and considerate. I learned alot in this class.
Steve was a hard prof, but he was good and he was very willing to help. I think he's great.
Steve lovesss definitions, so make sure you know them before quizzes and tests...umm had to work really hard to get my A-, was in his office prlly at least once a week and e-mailed him prlly like twice a week
This was definitely the hardest class I've taken in my academic career. If you're not up for the challenge, I'd consider taking a different prof, but I know I learned more with him than I probably would have without. It's a give and take situation.
Attempted to go to office hours, but he was no help at all. Class is extremely difficult. Its his way or the highway :( If you can... get a different prof.
He's def. the hardest teacher that i've had. He always wants an explaination for what your math process is, and if it's not exactly right, you get docked big. I would def get another prof if you can
Steve is a hard prof. He assigns lots of homework, but it's necessary for calc 3! He spends alot of time going over homework, and is willing to help. He expects that you know your stuff from calc 1 and 2, especially definitions. Take him if you're up for a challenge, and remember to always bring your model function that you will build!
Steve was pretty hard grader, however, his quizes were simple, be sure to look over the questions in the back of the syllabus before hand...he likes to put thoseon his tests and quizes. But beware of his maple labs, he grades super hard. One good thing about him is that he knows his stuff real well, so ask questions!!!
Great Professor. Posts everything on blackboard. Very easy to talk to outside of class, but only gives you just enough info and leaves you to figure out the rest. Get the solutions manual for the book, it was a huge help ($30). Labs are long, tedious, and extremely hard. He grades very hard on format and understanding with the labs.
This class is EXTERMELY difficult. Prof doesn't make it any easier. He really likes deffinitions. Have the questions are deffintions and concepts. If you get stuck with this professor STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!!
Doesnt Answer Questions. Only asks more.
Never again will i take any class with him. He's very strict on grading and doesn't really seem to care that over half his class is failing.
Professor Schlicker is probably the best math prof. you could get at Grand Valley. Any one who says he doesn't provide much help is a joke. He is constantly available and goes out of his way to make sure you know what you're doing. You have to know definitions but its only to help you understand the extent of the material. Awesome guy, awesome prof
Very good professor. He's very clear on what he expects from students. He's difficult, but not so difficult that you have no hope. Also, he's very helpful, very open to students, and quite patient as well. In all, I would recommend him.
Very good teacher but very tough grader.
He is a super hard grader and unless you are super good at math, you will not do good in his class. If you do not do the work or understand the material you will fail. Very little partial credit given
Prof. Schlicker is a great math teacher. He is always very helpful and willing to go over anything until it is clear. If you do your work and ask for help, you will do fine in the class. It does take work.
Schlicker is ALWAYS prepared for lectures and prepares immaculately typed notes explaining course material. Lectures are easy to follow and he can satisfactorily answer any question asked. Schlicker genuinely cares about how well his students understand the course and is readily available to help when needed.
Professor Schickler is one of the best professors I have had at Grand Valley. I've taken two courses with him. No, his classes are not easy. So don't take him if you want to coast through the class. If you don't understand something, ask, because he is able to explain the material in different ways that may help different people.
The worst math prof I've ever had and I've taken 6 math classes. Grades tests as if he is a 12 year old with no knowledge of math. If you don't explain things explicitly as they're written in the book, he'll take off half the points because he "doesn't understand" you. Also applies to maple labs because he expects you to be a "maple guru" like him.
He is very difficult and doesn't explain things very well. You must explain everything extremely well like you're teaching a child and you MUST know how to use maple. He has ridiculous guidelines and I would suggest taking any math prof other than him.
Very unhelpful and difficult to stay on top of things with. Huge work load with added lab sessions (not very related to the work). Very concept specific, more so than examples and practice with actual problems. DO NOT take this class with this professor.
Very few practice problems, exams are ridiculous, you get points off for things that would never affect you in real life and the book he used was a joke, he does care about his students success but he needs to care enough to change his teaching style and maybe even think about curving his exams when half the class is failing. Also labs were dumb.
Professor Schlicker does a very good job of explaining the material. He puts far more emphasis on learning the definitions and concepts than doing actual problems. He expects a lot, but he tells you exactly what he expects of you. His Maple labs are not that bad. He lets you use Microsoft Word to type them up. You don't have to be a Maple expert.
Very hard. Extremely thorough. He expects Lots of effort from his students. This is a very hard class to do well in. It is possible, but very challenging. You will have to work very hard and must be thorough with every assignment, lab, and test you take. Very time consuming. Good, solid teacher but very hard. Strict grader on everything.
One of the toughest grading teachers I have ever had. If you do not answer the questions exactly and word for word or if you do not explain it beyond thoroughly, he will take off a ridiculous number of points. So if you want a good grade, memorize the note handouts.
horrible. does not explain anything and is a stickler on grading. you have to memorize a lot of definitions and if you leave out one word he marks you down. also the final had questions i've never seen before do not take him I'm a math major and got a C in his class....
He is one of the worst professors I have ever had in my life. I have taken many math classes with other professors and I have usually passed with an A. With this professor, I suffer to just pass. His tests are VERY long and are VERY hard. He doesn't explain anything and when you ask, he's always confusing. STAY AWAAAAY!!!
Prof. is awful. I have been taking calculus for 3 years and he makes the course impossible. He must love using his pen because he will mark down anything, it can even be right. It's his opinion that matters. Worst Teacher!!!! DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE
Dr. Schlicker is one of the nicest professors you will meet. Yes, he is difficult and sometimes picky, but it is for your own good, and it is really hard to hold a grudge against him. He will explain anything you need him to, over and over, and will never judge you. He honestly cares for all his students and wants to see them succeed.Wonderful guy!
Great guy. Stressful part was that he used his own textbook (but free,)but gives a lot of partial credit. Keep an extra set of notes with only the most important formulas and it will help a lot. The math labs SUCK and he is picky about the grammar for homework and write ups but overall good.
Tells you what he knows rather than teaching you the subject. Exams are tough and contain questions most people in the class haven't seen before. Doesn't give many practice problems so it's hard to know exactly what to do. Focuses more on terminology than anything. The labs are a joke and hardly relate to class. He likes marking up your papers.
He never explains his labs even if you ask him he won't answer what you are asking no matter how you word it. I have never gotten lower than an A in any math class in my life and this was my first bad grade. He doesn't show you how to do problems, and only shows what HE knows. Stay away from this guy to keep you GPA intact.
First off he's very particular about the language you use when doing projects for the class. Although the guidelines are there for syllabus it's still hard to get a good grade on the projects. Should make the projects more clear. Lots of vocabulary for a math class to know. Uses his own textbook which doesn't have solution in it for you.
If you don't have a PHD in math, you wont be able to get a good grade on the projects. Very theoretical. Provides real life examples but gets lost in the little details. ASK QUESTIONS OR GET LEFT BEHIND!
Not a bad prof, keeps things light hearted. There are formal labs due every other week and it's extremely time consuming. He is an extremely hard grader, the math is easy but on the writing (and there is a ton) he grades hard and very picky. I took and aced Calc1 in high school but the in an issue w credits I took this class again-it was still hard
He's the bomb. He tries to make you figure out the answer without just telling you. However is always willing to help. Makes sure everyone is on the same pace but make sure to ask questions.
For a subject matter that should be relativity simple and clear, he makes it far more difficult than it should be. Tests are nothing like practice problems or homework assigned. The book is a joke and not helpful. Miss any work on a question and expect to loss most of the points. If you value your gpa and sanity don't take this professor
I will be as straight forward as I can: -Any class with this man is a GPA killer -Your grade is his opinion of you -He teaches math as if it were a writing class -DO NOT claim to have a handle on the material, he will take it as a challenge Never before have I had a prof that compelled me to rate them. All of the above is putting it mildly.
Ok class. He is a nice guy that tries hard, but his classes can get very boring. He will give you problems in class and then walk around as you do them, very boring. But tests were all open note, and quizzes were just one conceptual problem.
His group projects and hands-on approach to teaching math really help you to learn in depth. He expects an extremely accurate, highly detailed answer in all assignments, tests, and projects, but by demanding that level of answer, he really ensures that you learn the material inside and out.
I love calculus, but this class made me hate it. Assignments and tests are a 100% harder than they need to be. His labs are a nightmare; I never got better than a C, even when going to the math help center. He expects detailed writing but no answer is good enough. He's a nice guy; awkward, but nice. Just don't take his class.
Cares a lot about the wording of answers. Make sure to follow the writing guidelines for assignments and projects or you'll lose lots of points. Overall cares a lot about teaching, and is a pretty cool guy in class.
He's not a bad professor. He really cares about feedback and course evaluations and is getting better. However, he expects you to read the text and prepare yourself well before class. But hey that's college! If you don't prepare yourself well, then your grade will DEFINITELY reflect it. It'll take a bit to get used to it, but the class gets easier.
He definitely makes you work hard for your grade, but he is incredibly understanding. If you use his office hours and show him that you are trying, you will pass the class just fine. Get to know him, he is very resourceful!!
Teaches primarily by example in class, gives few notes and half the notes are definitions. Day-to-day homework is worth very little. Weekly homework/quizzes are also worth few for total grade and grades heavily on writing/format with group labs which make them extraordinarily difficult. Exams are worth 50% of total grade and unlike assigned work.
Highly recommend avoiding professor at all costs. He teaches Math as an English class. Tests and quizzes are based on how well you know definitions. By the end of the course, I couldn't apply anything I learned, I just knew definitions really well. Professor is very smug and doesn't treat students nice when visiting during office hours.
Good teacher but a very tough grader.
Schlicker WILL make you work hard for your grade, but he is there for every question you could possibly have.
This professor offers his own book for MTH 227 for free which is nice and convenient; however, don't expect to understand much from the book. This class has a lot to do with definitions and understanding those definitions while applying those definitions to the math. This professor doesn't teach much but expects his book to instead.
Group Projects were my downfall. There's homework due in-class first thing every day(luckily its for completion). But that's on top of online WeBWorK assignments, and exercises graded for accuracy every week. Also a conceptual quiz every single week. More conceptual than any math class should be.
Hes a cool guy and seems like a nice grandpa but I felt so stupid in class. Every time I asked a question he responded with a question so I didnt get much clarity. Its easy to get lost but he does give points for pre-class assignments and our tests were open note and book (a book which he contributed to) which was extremely helpful.
Prof Schlicker is a good guy and seems to truly care about teaching, but a lot of his class involves memorizing vocab and definitions. The last class of each week usually contains an exam and 3 page-long homework problems assigned the week before. There are also 3 tough group projects where you must be very specific. Wouldn't recommend his class
I struggled in this class but he is the only reason I was able to pass because he was willing to understand and help when we were struggling. You're able to do a lot in partners as long as you both understand the material, which was a great set up for me and it's how I learn best. He also was super caring and always asked about us.
Professor Schlicker is boring, I'll admit it. There are times where he struggles to fully comprehend questions and he's sometimes a little off track from the lesson. However, this professor cares that you learn, and he will make sure that you're fully in understanding of what is expected of you. 100% would take again, made MTH 202 doable.
Professor Schlicker himself is very nice, but this course specifically is super hard, especially if you don't know a lot about trigonometry before taking it. If you have questions, usually they are answered with another question. This class isn't graded using letter grades, it's determined at the end of the course. Heavy in math writing.
He will ask a question and let that question sit in the room waiting for someone to answer it. There are only 3 big assignments you are really graded on where you are asked to prove that you know the concepts. Make sure you know these concepts like the back of your hand before writing because you will have to meet with the professor to back it up.
Great professor. Teaches effectively and is always available to to give help and feedback often. No tests/exams, final grade depended on your portfolio where you prove what you learned. Workload wasn't TOO heavy, but you definitely have to do the work. Short activities due at the start of nearly every class, a few full assignments and reflections.
Just drop out if you have to take Trig with professor Schlicker.
Professor Schlicker was a great teacher. I had him for Math 124. You have no tests or quizzes. You do a reflection and resubmission for every assignment and Schliker gives feedback. Your final grade is based on a final portfolio you do and you get to choose what grade you think you deserve. He is very caring and wants to make sure everyone learns.
Absolutely amazing mathematician and inspirational teacher! If you don't plan to study math, he may not be for you, but as a math student I benefited greatly from his approach to the subject and his desire to inspire.
Professor Schlicker's class has a unique grading system, but can be challenging if you're not strong in math. Attend lectures, use the textbook, and try unstuck study alongside other study aids to succeed. Overall, a rewarding experience with a caring professor.
