Surely a talker, but makes it a point to know all the names of his students. Just listen and participate in his lectures and you'll learn a lot from him. His lectures are enjoyable, talks like a teenager/student, a real sociologist.

AMAZING PROFESSOR. if your thinking of taking Soc 1 or any other soc classes, Sherwood is the way to go. His class is a lot of fun and you really get to know everyone in the class). By far the best professor i've had at LAVC. words cannot explain how much i love the guy. His tests are easy as long as your read his lecture summaries and overheads.

He will make fun of you if you are not doing the readings or taking notes but it actually motivates the students to learn. I learned so much from him and he wasn't as hard as I thought. Ask a lot of questions and definitely read the chapters but they aren't too boring. He's awesome! Intimidating at first but as long as you listen n read it's ok!

I had a love/hate relationship with him. At first you'll "hate" him because in the beginning he is out for blood.(loves to humiliate you)and the readings are VERY time consuming. If you have a full plate, it's not the time. Once all the idiots drop, he gets MUCH cooler. You start to LOVE him... and then the class ends and your sad, but smarter. ;)

Probably one of the best professors I've ever had, if not the best. I doubt any two classes are the same. Everything can be very 'subject of the day' driven, and he makes it work with what we're learning. Takes personal opinions of students into account and all around makes it an intriguing and catered class.

Steve is by far the best professor I have EVER had. I would take him over and over. You will constantly crack up, his way of teaching is incredible, he makes everything fun. I have never taken a class that taught me about myself by looking at my environment through my society - his class did that. Don't short change yourself. Definitely super intense with his lectures! Sets up material online so you can pass his 3 tests. Explains material well and will try to clear up any questions you have. All in all a good guy. Need to attend to pass! Must do the reading as well otherwise he?ll call you out. Cheap book. Lots of writing and couple group performances

Prof Sherwood is awesome. Hes laid back and very engaging. If you're looking for an easy class, work wise, i wouldn't suggest this class.There is A LOT of writing and reading both in class and at home. Also, you have to read the summary of notes before the class to know what he is talking about in class. Otherwise, great class. Learning a lot.

In order to do well in his class you must participate and you must read the assigned readings. His test are based on his lectures. He is very approachable. Take his class if you have the opportunity.

This class isn't for you if you want an easy, "kick-back" class. You must work for the A and he gives a lot of reading. But overall he is very cool professor, he makes the topic interesting. Very funny too.

This Professor is tough love. If you read the readings he provides ESPECIALLY his lecture summaries, you will get an A, if you don't, drop the class. I did not take this class seriously until I saw how much the lecture summary helped and passed with a B. Solid professor

Prof. Sherwood is amazing. Although tough and expects a lot, I never realized how influential he was until you sit in a class where the professor does not care about you. There is a lot of reading, which is sometimes a good thing. However, some of the readings connect together in obscure ways. Most of us felt inspired to become a sociology major after the first class. If you like sosh, then get ready to read and re-read the assignments for some fun times.

I cannot say enough good things about this professor. He somehow got a group of around 20 people to become comfortable enough to talk to each other like they've been best friends for years. I've made amazing memories and great relationships. Please take this class. You won't regret it. It's an experience you'll keep with you for a long time.

What doesn't want dull classrooms, so he makes sure by the end of class everyone will practically be friends and that's the only class where I'm half an hour early. The readings aren't so horrible and I hate reading. This class definitely pushes you to talk, but if you really don't want to you don't have to. Do the home work!!

Sherwood is probably one of very few professors who makes their class enjoyable. Its not hard at all. There is a significant amount of reading, some very short and others a little bit longer. But he breaks it down and he is there to help you. Just do your journal writing, which also isn't very hard and you'll do just fine. He is a really cool prof.

Sherwood is definitely not your typical professor as he likes to go out and about when lecturing. He is hilarious and really connects the material to real life which makes it easier to remember. He requires you to buy a book full of articles which you HAVE to read but they are 10x more interesting than a textbook. Great professor, very upfront.

I loved this class. Towards the end of the semester I had a bit of difficulty coming to class -- attendance is MANDATORY. I am a SOC major, and would take Sherwood again. He is very fun and honest about himself and what he expects from you. I felt very comfortable in this class and made new friends along the way. Would take again!

Come to class, Read, Participate, Open Up, and Journal. He remembers his students by name, all of them. Make sure to READ, and honestly the reading is interesting. Speak up, put away the mask, and don't be afraid. His class is safe and the sooner you accept it the sooner you can achieve solidarity and enjoy. Relate the reading to your life.

This professor is beyond amazing. He really makes you learn so much about yourself and achieve solidarity. He is not a teacher who teaches by the book, and he emphasizes that. He puts himself in our level, thats the best part. Participation is key even though its hard personally. Focus, participate, come to class prepared. No book. PARTICIPATE!

I learned so much in this class, make sure you show up everyday or he will drop you, do the readings, especially the lecture summaries, participate, and write in your notebook and you should be fine. The final paper will be about yourself and solitude, which is the best thing ever! I had a blast!

Amazing experience. You have to be there everyday and participate. If you miss he will send you an email, and call you out in class. This class demands your attention, so if you plan on getting by don't plan not being picked on or noticed. Grade is test only, but he doesnt make you buy a book and gives you hard copies of readings.

One of the best professors I have had, and possibly will ever have. As others have mentioned, he will remember all of your names. He puts a lot of effort into his curriculum and lectures and he naturally expects the same from you. If you want an A, just read his lecture summaries/study guides and participate.

Probably my favorite professor so far, i cried and hugged him the last day. He might offend you but he's doing it for your own good. He wants to know about 'you, yo mama and yo drama' (his words not mine) hes hilarious but if you can't handle sarcasm, don't take his class. He is not an easy teacher, I had to study a lot. Dr. Sherwood is pretty AWESOME! Just be ready to have a class like no other, meaning it's not your regularly "structured" class. It gave me some anxiety at first, but then it all made perfect sense. Give it a try, I know you will LOVE it! It changed my outlook on things on many levels!

Prof. Sherwood's class was one of the most realistic classes Ive taken yet. Hes very blunt with his student. You do get put into groups. Lectures relate to current events but do drag on some days. Be ready to share ALOT cause it goes towards your grade. You only get 2 chances on missing class, 3 gets you kicked out. you gotta work for your grade!

The best I've ever had a valley. He taught me alot about myself and others. I bonded with many people in this class. His lectures are inspiring and it makes you think about your life. In terms of tests, they are pretty straightforward. Make sure to read the readings he gives out! Can't stress enough :) READ! Also don't be afraid to participate. :)

Had him for Spring 2020. His class was great in person & online. If you're an extrovert, you'll have no issue with the class. He gives lots of reading, but read them! They're super interesting & make your final paper easier. Tough quizzes, but as long as you put good effort into your final paper you'll pass. Would def take him for more classes. :)

I took this class during the spring semester. You would have to try really hard not to get a good grade in this classroom. Along with the lectures, there were readings and videos that were done in class and at home. In addition, some great discussions were done. There is a lot of freedom in this class which made me feel very comfortable.
