He is very knowledgable about the subject. What a profesor is suppost to be like.
You will not get an "A"! Try to get into a class that has a lot of people b/c if it ends up being a small class, you have to write two page essays instead of multiple choice. If you want to learn about lit take him. If you want to keep your GP
Interesting class, but you will not get an A. Grading policies are a bit confusing. I always get A's in English but I just barely got a B here. I do consider him a great, knowledgeable teacher still.
he is not funny, hard to understand and interpret about poems. Doesnt make the class interesting...I dropped and took Blair....much better
One of my favorite teachers ever. It is not your usual class where you just memorize and regurgitate. He relied on very fun and insightful class discussions and obviously loved literature.
His class is HARD! He doesn't take attendance, but IF YOU SKIP, YOU WILL FAIL! The material covered in the tests are NOT things that can be found in books; they are talked about in lecture. Interesting topics and discussions.
Arrogant, defensive and full of himself, but also passionate and knowledgable. Attend class even though attendance isn't taken for best results
The subject matter was pretty dry, but his lectures were VERY interesting. It's not so much a lecture, but a large discussion. Really cares about his students;makes it clear he'll help you any way he can. Tries to rile students up, but only to help in discussion and show different points of view.
Great prof if you are willing to work for it. Be prepared to defend your opinions.
I know I would have made better then a D if I would have gone to class. He is an intelligent and insightful man who obviously cares about his students and helping them suceed in the course. It won't be easy but if you work for it you will do well and enjoy yourself.
Great class, really opens your mind to many things
Lit and the Contemporary Reader is like yoga for the brain. If you're cool with constructive criticism and like to read and write, you'll have fun, but if not, you'll fail for sure. Attendance is mandatory.
THE BEST TEACHER I EVER HAD! yes, the class is hard, but he makes it interesting and makes you care. i hated the class the first few weeks and i hated the material, i got a c on my first test (essay test). but if it was any other teacher, i would have kept that c for the class. i ended up with a B and a great appreciation for reading. trust me.
I really liked this professor. He is one of my favorites on campus. His lectures are a discussion and he really wants to know your opinions. It may seem like he doesn't care what you say and is always trying to prove you wrong, but it's to help you learn from yourself. Opens your eyes to different opinions. He's not afraid to shock you.
Brilliant man!
he is very rude he once called me a prostitute and a flicked me off in a class discussion. beware if you argue with him that you will never be right. he is a smart man that knows his stuff so you have to make sure you keep up and know your stuff too.
Prof Wilson is one of the best professors I've ever had. Though his larger classes are more difficult to pay attention in, if you sit in the front you will be easily engaged. He is a BRILLIANT man. I have yet to meet a more intelligent professor. If you turn in quality work, you will be greatly rewarded. He grades fairly and is very eager to help people outside of class. His lectures really make you think about life, society, and yourself. You won't regret taking his class.
I think he's a real cool teacher, who does his own thing, you know, outside of the box.....he's upfront and honest, doesn't **** around with us......two thumbs up for mr. wilson!!!
essay tests are really tough. but he is an awesome teacher. very willing to help and always makes class enjoyable. he doesnt take attendence, but if you dont go you wont be able to pass. i hated walking the hill to get to lbj, but he made it worth while
Great professor, moderately difficult class, learned a lot.
I was really excited about Prof. Wilson's class at the beginning of the semester. He seemed really passionate about his job and he wanted everyone to like American Lit as much as he does. Basically he's just an **** with a friendly face who thinks he can do no wrong! He talks down to his students, and actually gives 0's to those who complete his essay exams!
warning:he does NOT play around.. if he says to read somethin, READ IT. although many may be interested in him for his lack of attendance policy, class is a must in order to properly analyze the literature the way he wants you to. he is deep and intelligent. if you dont like puttin effort into classes, dont take him. he will give you incredible insight and commentary on the readings. if you like intelligent conversations, take him.
HE sucks!!!
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE AN ATHLETE! he is very rude about missing class and will not help you make up the material. half the class made below a 30 on the first exam. 2 four-page essay exams, 2 scantrons. will argue with anyone who speaks, and will always win. bad experience for me!
Dont talk**** for his class being hard! It was your own fault for being lazy! It WAS hard I pulled a 45 on the first test It was my fault. So I learned how he graded fast. It had MODERATE amount of reading but it was good stuff that one should read anyway. His lectures are the more than you could need. Leads the class discussion exceedingly well.
He is TOUGH!! Some people say that going to all the classes helped them, but I found it useless! All you can do is read all the material, look for any summaries, explanations, or reviews online, and PRAY! I took his college writing II class and got an "A", but I saw his other side in this class and got a "C" (and it was a TOUGH C) AVOID THIS CLASS!
The class was ahrd and he thought it was funny to give out a test that was just a bitg black box. NOT Funny. I wouldn't recommend taking him but if you do make sure you read and understand it exactly how he wants you to because if not then you will pay for it.
You can make an A, but only by the grace of God, but you have to go to class everyday and do your readings. He is very contentious - likes to cause strife. He loves to argue and it's his way or the highway. Would NEVER take him again. Class was rarely boring, but it wasn't worth feeling the way I did after it! (That is pissed off)
He trys to be funny and is not.Class sucks majorly. He test are biases...and i have 4.0 till him because he thinks he is cute and made a test a big black box and wanted you to know what he meant ...STAY AWAY
Steve Wilson is an excellent teacher. His class was very frustrating, but I learned a lot. I would definitely take his class again.
He has been THE best teacher I have had so far! You HAVE to read the readings and I suggest participating in class. He relates all the readings to real day life. He taught me to truely have an open mind to anything. Question your current beliefs and why you have them. Its a thinking class bue you will get a lot out of it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!
Fantastic! He plays the devil's advocate to force people to examine their thoughts and learn, which is harder for some than others. NB: from the previous poster's grammar and spelling, I suspect s/he did NOT have a 4.0 before Wilson's class; if s/he did, s/he deserved to be taken down a peg. Steve's great; a real thoughtful, challenging prof.
Best teacher i've had at Texas State, by far. Don't be scared off my his reviews; I got a 100 in the class (thanks to his gracious bonus points)
Class was always very interesting and I actually enjoyed attending. I never missed class, but when it comes to tests they were very tricky and the essays often seemed as if he WANTED to mislead you and the real test was if you could figure out what he really wanted you to write about.
At first I thought,"Wow, this teacher seems great!" Then I was rudely awakened. It started becoming appareent to me that he is really big into mind games. He taught the class with a smile, but a crooked one. He showed us an example of bad poetry, written by a dying child, and an example of good poetry, written by himself. He's an awful teacher
Professor Wilson defnititely knows his stuff, but he's almost smug about it at times and seems as if he scoffs at the students when we don't know something. I'll be lucky if I pass.
I suggest you tune your writing skills before taking this class. I thought I was ok at writing until I got my grade for our first ESSAY test...which was s 60. Be sure to visit the writing center or something because just because you make the page limit (which is 5 pages) for his tests, does NOT mean that you passed.
Unless you are an english major, then this isn't the class for you. Rude sometimes, cool sometimes, vague all the time. There is no way you can study for his exams,at least the essay exams. They tell you to study one thing and the test will be on another thing. This class is going to kill my gpa... good luck if you still want to take him....
He doesn't even grade the lengthy essay test himself, you're at the mercy of his TA's.(A BAD THING) I'm good at English classes, but you better be an English major with a liberal literature view to pass this class. Most, if not all, of the readings involve one form of homosexual, racial, **** undertones. I wouldn't recommend this prof to anyone.
Class is usually pretty interesting, a few times it got a little pointless, overall he knows his stuff and tries to get people involved, if youre a thinskined person, dont take this class, better yet just drop out of college, bc the professors arent here to wipe your a$$. 4 tests, 2 scantron, easy, 2 essay, graded pretty harshly-by the TAs.
He's a VERY interesting professor; there was not one class where I was bored. He allows everyone to speak there opinions (though it will undoubtedly be met with criticism and sarcasm.. regardless of whether your views are the same as his). There are 2 (easy) scantron exams, and 2 essays of which his IDIOT TA's massacre everyones' grades.
This class is amazing! Go to class, every time. You can't do well on tests without attending class, taking notes, and doing the assigned readings. He's willing to help you if you make the effort to go see him.
He was the hardest teacher i took at texas state!!! avoid him!
He is the most amazing prof ive had. you HAVE to be open minded or you wont last in his class. His class is very challenging though- not for those who want an easy A. he is smug but he has a right to be.he really is a big reason i decided to start travelling among other things.
Hard class, Prof doesn't grade anything, the TA's grade and they are useless, definitely recommend a different prof
I learned alot in his class, but my grade did not reflect that -- extremely frustating. Only the die-hard perfectionists and people pleasers probably make an A. I believe you can get alot from a class without struggling the whole time, but apparently Steve Wilson does not believe that.
Wilson was my absolute favorite professor. I had him my freshmen year, and never had a better one. He's very intelligent. His classes are not for slackers, but if you want to become more open minded and learn really interesting material, his class is a must. He does a lot of discussion, rather than lecturing. I got an A. It can be done.
I had him for Kerouac. He pretends that he wants to help people be more open minded. He actually just wants people to become like minded to him. And if you are not like him and want to express a contrary opinion, you will be dubbed "close-minded","disappointing", etc. Some people love this guy, I think it is because they buy into his probaganda
Great teacher who made a great class. No one wanted to finish. Lazy students irritate him, so if you're lazy you know what to expect, from everyone as well as Wilson. He does give A's to students who work, read, and think, and he will open your mind unexpectedly. His positive energy is contagious too. TAs grade his Soph-level papers, not his upper.
He was great. Not only did I enjoy the class, but I learned a lot, and it really helped me with skills I need for other classes. You have to engage and be willing to work hard, but it's worth it. This may have been the best class I've had in college. And yes, you can get an A if you're willing to work for it.
Smart enough guy, awful professor. Essay tests are speed writing assessments and look for quantity, not quality. Don't waste your money on this guy.
Really cool guy, very hard Prof. Very interesting to listen to, an he was able to hold my attention in class. The tests are way to hard. 45 minutes to write 4 pages is not enough. The multiple choice tests are full of questions with more than one answer.
Discussions are awesome, if you like a microphone shoved in your face. You don't have a choice but to talk in front of the class...So be ready and up to date on your reading...Good Luck
He is passionate about what he teaches which is a good thing but we does not take into consideration anyone else's view. He has a "mightier than me" personality. Could be cool if he wasn't such .....
Wilson is fantastic. You really have got to do the readings and go to class. The multiple choice and essay questions are discussed in the lecture so pay attention and take notes! His American Lit 1865+ is one of the best classes I have taken.
My favorite english by far. I took him for Eng 2359 in the summer, before I even decided to become an english major. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be. Be up to date on the readings. He liked to pick on people to comment on them.
Worst professor I ever took!!! Beware of Wilson! He doesn't answer your questions but instead turns them around on you - cuz you should know the answer. Horrible! Wilson knows everything and no one can tell him any different. Even if you keep up with the reading good luck with the discussions - they tend to go in a completely different direction
He's all about what he says is right, when in all reality, the material can be interpreted by one's own interpretations, not a fair playing field. Be prepared to be talked down to.
Wilson is a great professor. I am very glad I took this class. His "talking down" is to open your mind and have you look at things from a different perspective. I learned a lot in his class and really came to admire English literature. He doesn't shove the mic in your face, either; usually there are enough people that will volunteer to talk.
one of my favorite professors! his class is extrememly challenging but thats why i loved it. i now have a wealth of knowledge concerning post modern literature. anyone who claims they were "talked down to" obviously didnt get anything from the class because they were unable to open their minds which is critical to being sucessful in this class.
Wilson is amazing. If you don't like him as a professor, you probably don't belong in college.
He's a teacher who believes that reading the book, attending class, and taking notes is key to helping you in class. In fact, he awards extra credit in class for attendance. He is a cynic, but it's largely fueled by students who don't read or come to class. His work isn't too difficult. It just requires a slight bit of studying.
I took his class on Kerouac. It was definitely one of my most challenging courses/the source of many stress filled nights. Participation is important, so speak up. Also, seeing him during his office hours is extremely helpful--I highly recommend that. I worked really hard and ended up with an A. Good luck! Challenging, but really rewarding.
DONT take this class in the summer unless you want to be reading 40 pages of boring text every night. He gives ridiculous essay exams that have open ended prompts that you do not get beforehand to prepare for in class writing. you need to participate and come to class every single day or you will be totally lost. He has grad students grade essays:(
This is not the type of literature class where the tests are asking for summaries. it's purely analytical and in depth and its focused alot on religion. Attendance is definitely mandatory, and you read A LOT every night. You cannot go to class unprepared because he will get extremely heated, and you will probably be really lost in the discussion
If you can help it, avoid this instructor. He shows little respect toward students at this level. Classroom attitude is punishingly cynical, sarcastic and mostly negative. His TAs grade your tests, and will also chat amongst themselves while you take them. One of the most frustrating classes I've ever taken.
This is the class that swayed me over to being an English major. Wilson creates an engaging classroom moved mostly by class discussion. If you love controversy, brilliant texts, and a very sophisticated commentary on them, take this class. I loved coming every day. As far as helpfulness, before his tests, he answers any questions you have on TRACS.
By far the most inspiring teacher I have ever had. He can seem mean at times but really he is very understanding. Make sure he knows you. I've always had trouble with English classes but he made it interesting for me. BASICALLY changed my life. Don't listen to the people who say he's a bad teacher. He's tough but you will learn so much from him.
He is the hardest grader I have ever experienced. Because of his class, I received my first B in my entire life. He is an inspiring teacher, and you will learn so much, but be prepared to work very hard for possibly a low grade. Also, he grades based on whether he agrees with your argument, not if you argue correctly.
Mr. Wilson was really difficult. I have always made As and Bs in English classes, and I had a perfect GPA before his class. I know how to work hard and how to write, but he intentionally gives low grades on papers so that you will go see his wife in the writing center. He will challenge you, which is good for some, but he is not an "inspiration."
Wilson is one of the most interesting professors I've had. He is extremely sarcastic which could come off as being "talked down to". He provides thought compelling ideas and is very inspiring. Your whole grade is based on 4 tests which is tough, but I enjoyed the class.
Be prepared to work hard for a possibly low grade. He only gives four tests, no extra credit. Two of the tests are in class essays, and the other are 20 question scantron tests. I read before class, have perfect attendance, take detailed notes, and have made a C on the last two tests. You HAVE to UNDERSTAND the literature in DEPTH for the tests!
The HARDEST class I have ever been in. I am an English major and this class is pushing me to my breaking point. Don't miss class, talk (it's 20% of your grade), and make sure your grammar is perfection. In his own words he is a "grammar imperialist"
This class is the most frustrating class i have ever taken. Avoid him if you can. Lectures are a must and he is so sarcastic...to the point where he is extremely rude. He is very hard to work with & he does not even grade the essays. You can read all you want but you won't do good on any of the exams & he gives no extra credit. RUN WHILE YOU CAN.
His lectures are very interesting, he definitely makes you think about things from a new perspective. Grades are made up of 4 tests: 2 in class essays and 2 scantron tests. Scantron tests are harder than essays. Attendance isn't mandatory but is essential to pass the class.
I put myself through school, so you can bet that I don't miss class unless absolutely nessecary, so I didn't think that I would take advantage of his lack of an attendance policy, but then I became very ill for several weeks during his semester. When I tried to bring him documentation he dismissed me but took it out on my grade.
If you think he is hard or rude, good luck surviving in the real world. It's refreshing to have a prof who actually pushes you to think and do your best. Yes, you have to read, think, and come to class. If this is too much for you, do the world a favor and drop out if college. His classes are absolutely transformative, and I highly recommend him.
If you think he is hard or rude, good luck in the real world. It's refreshing to have a prof who sincerely challenges you to think. Yes, you have to actually read, go to class, and have intelligent conversations with others about the reading. If this is too much for you, you shouldn't be in college.
I took Wilson some years ago, and he was tough, but one of the few real profs I ever took. I'm a PhD candidate now in a prestigious program, I teach literature & philosophy, & I can say that he shaped my career course. Complainers will complain, and all you excellent students out there will gain more from him than you can put into just a few words.
One of the better teachers I've had. He doesn't cater and he doesn't sugar coat anything. Very intelligent and really got me prepared for the rest of my school career. He's tough, but if you're serious he'll be a serious help. If you tend to slack then he won't be much fun.
I am about to take my third class with him and I have learned so much from him. He challenges you to use your education. People complaining are more likely people that like to slack off and want to place blame. He is the Associate Chair of the English department. Not only that, but you are all in college. You should EXPECT to be challenged.
Tough grader/tough love. No reward for opinions unless textually backed up. I am a better writer because of him. Go to office hours, don't miss class. Bring him drafts, he will help you. Be concise in your essays. Challenging and rewarding class.
He's rude and I couldn't stand his class. You definitely can't miss class on workshop days. All he did was tell us what not to do over and over and he gave bad criticism and searched for things that would be wrong with your work. I love writing but he made everyone feel horrible about their work,no matter what. I do NOT recommend taking him at all.
Dr. Wilson expects you to participate in class and engage with the material. He knows when you're trying to skate by, so lazy students need not apply. He has a reputation as a tough grader, but he grades by reasonable standards for English students hoping to make a career in the field. If you've put in the work, class discussions are a lot of fun.
I have mixed feelings about Wilson. He's super smart and knows his stuff, but he's very condescending. He expects an unreasonable amount of prior knowledge and is not afraid to tell you when he thinks you're being stupid... but, again... I did feel like a smarter, better writer after his class. I am an A student and I struggled just to get a B.
My favorite professor of all time here at txst!!!! Sarcastic and honest. His lectures will change your life if you go and pay attention. Tests are difficult but if you try you'll do great.
Steve Wilson is an amazing professor who actually cares if you learn something about life and literature. He does creative exams such as one on one discussions or creating a mind web about a book. He can tell if you haven't read the assigned novel and will likely call you out. Classes tend to be based around open discussions of ideas. GO TO CLASS.
Steve Wilson is one of the most challenging profs I've had at Texas State. To say he's hard is an understatement. However, Resistance Lit was one of my favorite classes. Wilson makes you work, but he provides ample opportunity to make sure you work the right way. The assigned texts are engrossing, and the classroom discussion is intense.
Professor Wilson is an insightful man and knows what he is talking about, on the other hand I believe he has a hard time understanding that not all students are on his level of intellectuality and can come off as rather condescending. He takes time to meet outside of class and will go over your rough draft before turning it in. Don't give up.
I took several classes from Steve and he loves to teach, he loves the whole process of academia as a pursuit of knowledge and garnering knowledge through an in depth understanding of writers, context, time and application. I will never read old English again, but appreciate I can teach it to my kids. He's a great man.
Steve's lectures are great, he likes to encourage the class to participate and think for themselves. Downside, he will test you on details that he may have mentioned once. His tests are extremely hard and most questions have 2-3 correct answers. I am an A/B student and I barely got a C. Be prepared to study HARD to earn a B if your lucky.
One of my most memorable teachers at TX State. I applied myself, was willing to work and I did well in the class. In fact, I was impressed with how much I learned. Steve is a smart guy but can come across as intimidating. He wants to inspire but requires participation from the student, too. He challenged me and I learned a lot. Thanks Prof Wilson.
If you want to learn to look at the world from different points of view and really learn from literature, take this course. This class was challenging but was one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken.
Professor Wilson is the worst professor I have ever had within the English Department of TXST. He's rude and it doesn't seem like he wants his students to succeed. I'm an A or B writer in my other English classes, and the best grade I got from Wilson was a 79 and that was with more work than my A papers get. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Steve is a tough professor. His grading is hard and he has high expectations for his students, but I have never gotten more out of a class than I did with him. You have to be willing to put in the work. If you're looking for a class that really improves your writing and inspires critical thought (and if you're a hard worker), his class is for you.
Steve Wilson has such interesting classes/discussions and gives extra credit randomly throughout the semester. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he goes over the readings and tells you what you need to know for the test. Tests are difficult, but if you actually want to learn, take him!
Professor Wilson is an intellectual man who really cares about the subject! He pushes students hard and loves discussion. While he encourages different opinions, he has a tendency to attempt to make you feel wrong if you do not share his same point of view on the readings. He is great but does not enjoy viewpoints that stray from his.
Someone who loves his subject but couldn't care less if you don't share the same enthusiasm. 4 tests and that's it. The whole semester, my classmates did not understand what he was looking for on the tests. He is a heavily biased guy with little grace to those that disagree. If you're not an English major don't take him.
Steve is INCREDIBLE. If you're looking for an easy A, dont take him, but if you're looking for a class that cracks your head open & makes you really think about things, he's your guy. It was the most exciting, challenging class I've ever taken. LOTS of discussions & he expects you to contribute & welcomes disagreement & other points of view.
Interesting class and discussions, but if you struggle with depression and anxiety, you might think twice. Im not going to say dont take him, because he really does make you think and learn and thats what college is for. This class messed with my depression more than anything else Ive ever done. Thats not on him, but its something to consider
Steve Wilson is very good at making you think about ideas youve never heard of. My main complaint is I had health issues the semester I took him, and he didnt seem to believe me (even with proof). He talked bad about me to another professor, who ended up telling me. Extremely unprofessional and It made me not want to be in his class.
Makes you feel dumb when you are not passionate about early US lit, and will make a mock of you in class so it makes you not want to talk in class. Essays are long and hard without much direction. Really nice guy, just not when it comes to early US lit I guess.
He is an okay professor. He will get on students if they don't participate in class. Participation matters because it helps with your grade. Sometimes, he is not always clear and can be confusing. May have an attitude at times.
Took his Beat Generation class some years back and got an A. Strictly with respect to communicating the material, hes fine. Perfectly serviceable, even above average teacher. He fails as a human being. Your typical aggressively sensitive male writer, like Norman Mailer except that it makes perfect sense for Wilson to doubt his talent.
Do your GPA a favor and take another professor. The stress this man gives you is not worth it. He makes his class ridiculously difficult for no reason. The way he wants you to take and answer exam questions should be a crime. There are soo many other better proffers you could take. Id even say to put off the class until you could take someone else
worst professor i have ever met in my life. If you dont like talking in class he will force you, but aside from that his grading is atrocious. He is not looking to pass you he is looking to fail you. He will blame it all on you also but the tests are literally impossible, you have to be able to read his mind to pass. Terrible teacher. Do not take
I was a mostly A student in college but I got a C in Wilson's American Lit course due to running out of time on a written exam, When I tried to talk to him about it during his office hours, he refused to offer me any way to redeem that exam score. I would do it again and still get the C because of how interesting and engaging the course was.
You simply have to know what you're talking about in class, because no matter what you say he will challenge you. This shouldn't be a problem if you've read the material, are comprehending the discussion and know how to form complex thoughts. The class was hard and I loved it. Steve is the best.
His lectures are pretty entertaining and make you think a lot. The only thing that seemed unfair was that the final prompt was just a black box and he insisted that there is a prompt. Meaning you couldn't write about anything. Expects a lot from seniors and normal exams do have the prompt. But will take off a lot of points if not high quality.
Do not take Professor Wilson! He involves his personal politics and will shut down any student that has opposing beliefs. He is disrespectful to students and will embarrass them for having not the answer he is looking for. He has a horrible email etiquette and has an arrogant "white savior" complex and is a harsh grader.
For my makeup exam(sick) he left me alone in a loud room with no clock to tell the time until another professor took me to an actual quiet room and when I asked him about extra credit and the exam average he said no extra credit and ignored the average so I'm gonna take that as it's not good. I like the class terrible teacher. Very rude as well.
I haven't finished his class yet but I would warn every student not to take his class unless you're an English major. He expects it to be your whole life, if you work don't take his class. He's also extremely rude and makes fun of the students in class and makes you not want to be there but will only blame the students never himself.
Professor Wilson's class is challenging but engaging. Though he has strong views, he encourages diverse perspectives. I found Unstuck ai helpful for studying alongside the required readings. Attend class, participate, and you'll gain valuable insights.
This class is VERY heavily graded on participation. You are expected to know the material and be ready to argue for your opinions and interpretations of the texts you read. I participated very little because of my peers, but I got feedback from him on my essays, saying he wished I spoke more. He's caring and respectful, and I would take him again.
