Really into math.
He's so passionate about math! He made math interesting for the 1 hr of class everyday. Definitely an inpiration. Keep it my Mr. Black!
He is the best math professor at GRCC! When I become a professor, I hope to be like him!
He is very enthusiastic about his class, but needs to realize that only very rarely will there be students that figure the stuff out on their own by asking questions. Also, his way of grading homework isn't very good in my opinion.
He is not just a good educator but an inspiration
One of the best math teachers I've ever encountered. His tests need a little modification cuz most everyone runs out of time. Very good at teaching the material in an understandable way. If you've taken calculus and had a hard time understanding it, you can appreciate his classes.
Badass teacher!!! Anyone that doesn't understand math the way he presents it.. probably wont understand it ever, he's the best
GREEEAT!!
Very awesome teacher. Sure does love math.
he is the best math teacher I ever had

I dropped out of college for 5 years after taking this guys class 1 day. His fault? No. He came to class the first day and I couldn't understand the guy to save my life.
The BEST math teacher I have ever had! The class wasn't easy (be sure to study for tests), but his enthusiasm and meticulous lectures made things go smoothly.
Awesome! I have never seen someone so enthusiastic about their job. He isn't one of those crappy teachers that simply teaches out of the book. He makes up his lectures mostly from scratch. You get to learn what he thinks is important, rather than what the crappy book thinks. Best Teacher I've ever taken.
Best math teacher that I've ever had, very well organized. Copy everything that he writes on the board. If you pay attention, you'll do well.
Black is a great guy, but he is extremly hard with his grading. He only goes over a subject once and will not return to it. I had a solid average of 3.7 in my math classes before I had black. It has since dropped to pushing a 3.0. Black teaches very well, but grades extremley hard.
Mr. Black carries a contagious enthusiasm for Calculus and its founding fathers. His style makes it easy to learn, but his stringent adherence to no late work and tests that are challengingly long for the time allotted make him a challenging but worthwhile teacher. I gained and retained excellent knowledge.
A very nice teacher!!!
I love this teacher, very difficult but also very clear in his teachings, if you work hard you'll do well. He words things so well, if i get anything out of this class its "The derivative of the outside... EVALUATED at the inside... times the derivative of the inside." i swear he said that like 2 times every day.
he is the best math teacher I have ever had...

Very hard, but well worth it. He explains why we do things and how it works. He is always willing to help, and wants to make sure that everyone in the class understands the material. Just make sure you're not late to class-he takes points off.
Excellent presentation skills. You have to try pretty hard to not understand what hes talking about.
His way of talking is just too fancy for me. And that does not help when you're studying Linear Algebra. But he is always prepared when giving his lecture and it's never boring. He is great. Take his class, for better or for worse.
Mr. Black is such a nice person but he grades very very hard.. He explains things so well if you pay attention, but then again, he grades hard.. 1 point will mean so much to you if you took his class! (--!)
He's very clear in explaining everything but he's such a hard grader. If you need the lesson, take him definitely. But if you need the grade, don't even think about taking him.
Very Good at explaination, but a very tough grader. Loves the subject and will get you though it if you attend class. Kind of rough when you meet with him to ask questions. Also has the trait of answering a question with another question.
His teaching styles are easy to understand. You really understand the materials he presents. Very passionate about his mathematics. However, grading is really tough. If you want a good grade, stay away. If you want to learn, take him.

Amazing teacher when it comes to clarity. He has a really stupid grading system though. Also, make sure you completely understand the stuff from math 102 before taking him for 104 because he isn't going to explain anything from the previous class to you.DO NOT BE LATE.If you're late he drops an entire .1 from your final grade, like from 3.7 to 3.6
He's so good at explaining materials. But he's a very bad grading system. 100% is his 4.0 ! And one more thing, DON'T BE LATE or he will deduct 1 point foe every time you late.. Overall, he's a good teacher.
Extremely easy to understand. Funny character: surfer/jack sparrow. Super passionate about math, but crappy grading system and policies. Doesn't give out enough homework to master material, so when the tests come you feel unprepared. SUPER HOT!!! NICE ASS!!!
To this day, Professor Black is my favorite teacher ever. I took his calculus cycle in 2001 and his passion for math and teaching was unrivaled. His explanations were lucid and well thought-out. His grading was tough, but never unfair. His comprehensive test reviews told you exactly how to solve the problems. Steven Black, you are the greatest.
Amazing clarity adn understanding of calculus.
He is truly the best. His tests are not hard at all as long as you do the homework (You can earn bonus in the test easily since they're from the hmk). Dont go to class late. If late, dont go to class. Highly recommend him. Love him so much. A plus: He has a very cool tattoo ^0^
Excellent teacher. Engaging and very passionate about Math. His lectures are fast paced but clear. He is the best professor I've had to date. He is tough though. If you're looking for an easy class, this isn't it. If you are looking to learn Calculus, this is the man to learn it from.
Mr. Black is a very decent guy who has an obvious love for his work. Be aware, however, that he is a very, very hard grader. You will learn a lot, but be shown no quarter for your mistakes. Even "small" mistakes will cost you big, so be ready to work hard and go all the way for that "A". Otherwise, great teacher, fun guy.
Steven Black is a good instructor. Super duper nice and willing to help. He will never "give" you the answer, but he'll definitely help you and explain it so well that you must be a lame-o not to understand it afterwards.
Black is an incredible teacher
great teacher i have been out of school for six years and came back and now completly understand functions hard grader though
Nice guy, relatively difficult class. I'm not a math person, but I managed to do okay. I got a lot of help outside of class though. If you do well in math, this is the guy for you, if not, well, be prepared to put your time in.
He's definately not the teacher for me. I'm the kind of person who works hard for the grade. Not because I am some math "genius". His lectures are very clear yet too fast. His tests are HARD HARD HARD. So be prepared to study A LOT. He is a nice person but a teacher with no mercy whatsoever.
Mr. Black is a terrific professor. He's probably the best, most interesting lecturer I've ever had. He explains everything extremely well so you understand things perfectly. I'd heard he was a hard grader, but I never thought anything was unfairly graded. If you're good at math, you'll be hard pressed to find a better professor anywhere.
Be sure to arrive to class on time. He doesn't mind if you don't show up as that's your responsibility, but he has little tolerance for tardiness. He is very polite and makes you feel valued. He is one of the best, clearest teachers I have ever had; he explains things so that anyone can understand. Extra credit opportunities are scarce, but tests are predictable.
He's the best Math teacher I have ever had. His syllabus and the way he teach is absolutely great, nothing to complain. He help the student a lot both outside and inside the class. Also, he's really hot with his wonderful tattoo.
take from someone else. he is egotistical.
His class is extremely hard! I cannot emphasize this enough. Study a lot and check over your homework constantly. Each and every point can be devastating to your grade. I'm not sure is the fact he is a great instructor outweighs the difficulty level? For me, no.
Lectures are very systematic, organized, and consistent. Homework packs have same weight as an exam score. Exams are very difficult concerning you have extremely little time. Unless you're a math prodigy, it's unlikely you'll get above a 3.0 in his class. If you lose two points on anything, your grade goes down by a tenth. You have been warned!
Class follows a very logical order, very easy to understand. Not much work involved, and tests are pretty simple. Just show up on time and you're all set.
99% to get a 4.0 according to the sullabus! He did a huge favor to the class by lowering it down to 97%... never answers a hmwk questions in class cuz hmwk is worth 50%. makes up his own worksheets so the textbook is useless for figuring them out. be prepared 2 be stuck in the tutoring center for the duration of his class if u arent a calculus geek
Best math teacher I have ever had! He isn't easy, but he explains everything so well that it seems to be easy because he explains it so well. I wish he was teaching calc 152 next quarter! If you are struggling with math you should take him because he will tell you why you do the calculations that you do! GREAT teacher!
Good teacher. His lectures and explainations are great and clear. And YES, you need a good basic in order to take his class since you have to do hw all by yourself. He'll answer ur questions regarding hw but don't expect him to give you the result. p/s: Tutor center is not really helpfull, tutors're all students.
The best math teacher I've ever had since my junior high days. His lectures are full of clarity and shouldn't be missed. Homework is half your grade (but the lowest score is thrown out), and there are three non-cumulative tests (no final). I wish I could take him for the rest of the Calculus series.
If you want to be well-prepared for the severe and difficulty of calculus, just take him. His explanation is extremely clear and intellectual. Homework is counted for almost half of the total grade, so it's a good opportunity for you to practice and revise the material you studied in class.
Mr. Black is really passionate about Math. His concepts are easy to understand and his explanation are clear. Little textbook work for this class and that's good because the textbook is awful. If you need to understand Math, this is the instructor for you.
One of the hardest math teachers i have even had, however, he was also the most effective. Unless you already a smart kid, don't expect more then a 3.0. If you want a 4.0 don't take him, but if you want to KNOW calculus then you should because he is an excellent teacher.
I've had Mr. Black before, so I knew exactly what I was getting into. He's a hard grader, but no one explains math concepts better than he does, so when I saw he was offering this class, I jumped at the opportunity to once again learn from him. He took what is a very conceptual class and made it much easier to comprehend.
Best math teacher EVER. He's crystal clear about all the concepts, goes through many examples, and offers homework help the day before it's due. Getting a 4.0 in his class is hard, but as long as you pay attention to his lectures, do the homework, and practice the concepts you will be fine.
Super Clear and helpful, but can be a bit heartless on grading. Excellent Proffesor.
The hardest math teacher, but the most helpful teacher I've ever had. He is an excellent teacher about teaching concepts and examing examples. However, his class is a big challenge. His tests and hw are not easy. You need to study extremely hard if you want to get a good grade. Cool teacher!
My favorite math teacher ever! He is not too easy, but he is very smart, funny and helpful. He really helps you understand the material.
Fantastic Calculus teacher! He's lectures are well structured and thorough. Gives plenty of example problems. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you miss even one lecture you could find yourself very lost. Tests are challenging, but take good notes, practice, practice, PRACTICE math and you'll do just fine!
His lectures are really well written and given, well-organized and well-timed. He writes his own homework which is helpful because everything he puts on the homework will show up on the test in one form or another. He's very passionate about math and it shows in his lectures.Don't be late and do homeowrk.go to office hours as needed! Very personable
Steven Black is my math hero. He lit a burning passion in me, I will take and retake math because I love it now- because he made it real to me.
Great lecturer, very helpful, passionate, engaging, & fun! I rarely needed book b/c he writes his own HW sheets & my notes from lecture were awesome. Reasonable amount of HW; drops lowest score. Grade is just HW & tests (3 of them). Test reasonable in length & difficultly. Each test had 1 bonus problem. Awesome teacher, would HIGHLY recommend!
Very passionate about math and his teaching. and it shows. Hands down the greatest teacher I've had yet at GRCC. I highly advise his classes. They are no easy A, but they aren't difficult at all. If you want to continue with math and have a good understanding of what you learned last quarter, take steven black.
Although he was a good teacher his class was incredibly hard because the hw was woth so many points. if you plan to take this class just be prepared to need alot of help....unless you are a math expert
Best math teacher I have ever had. His lecture is crystal clear, very precise, and he is super passionate about math. Every lecture with him is a show. You can't help but to pay attention. But, tests are very hard, there are very few point available in class so it is very easy to do bad. Do every homework and make sure it is right.
Really good teacher. I had a lot of fun in his class, and got 4.0. If you review well you can absolutely get high score in his exam. I like this teacher very much, he made me feel math is an interesting thing. I learned a lot and he is always very happy to help students. If you wanna learn and get good GPA take his class.
After GRCC I attended University of Washington and USC and Mr. Black was the best lecturer I had in all my educational experience. Keep going Mr. Black, you are exceptional. All the best math teachers were at GRCC.
Mr. Black is hands down the best professor I've had the pleasure of meeting. He is a motivator that is very passionate about Math. He absolutely loves it and it shows. I wish he could go on to teach math 151, it will be sad to leave his class. I strongly recommend, although, beware, that the workload is kind of a lot, but I don't mind at all.
Great teacher, best one I've had. His lectures are entertaining and very organized. As long as you follow the lectures and do the homework then its a great class experience. His exams are like the problems he gives you on the homework so its very important to do them.
Having Steven Black as a professor was truly a pleasure. He is AMAZING and very passionate about his work. Lectures are very easy to understand and he is always willing to help if you don't. Specifically points out whats gonna be on tests and tests are straight to the point. I've never gotten such a good grade in math. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIS CLASS.
Steven is the best!!! Love his class time! Every class like an other show. The best teacher ever and very interesting! You don't feel difficulty level because it is so interesting and awesome explanation! Thank you Steven!!!
Get ready to spend HOURS and HOURS in the MLC. I spent on average 5hrs in there every week. Even if you do this, get ready to still fail. Homework is tough and the tests are even worse. I wasted so many hours in the MLC just to barely fail along with 34's of the class. If he only knew what we went through, maybe he would feel bad to fail us.
ONCE YOU GO STEVEN BLACK, YOU NEVER GO BACK! Set the bar high for future professors, have yet to find one who is even in the same realm as him
I'm not really a math guy, but Black made everything clear. He loves math and it shows. Classes were actually fun! I would definitely take him again.
His class lectures have no colleration with the exams whatsoever. It's even hard to pass his class. Very tough professor. Don't take him if you want to keep your GPA high
He loves the material and it shows. Energetic and keeps the class paying attention. Homework is difficult but not too brutal. Tests can be difficult to finish in the time limit, but if you're consistent with the homework you should still manage a good grade. Definitely plan on taking him again.
Most of the students in our class have to spend time at the MLC everyday for many hours because his instructions and lectures are not very clear. Most of us have failed the tests despite our hard work. His practice tests, study guides, and review days have not been helpful at all. I personally would not recommend him though he seems nice.
Mr. Black is a nice person. If you show up at his office hours to go over what you don't understand it helps out a lot. It is possible to get good grade. You must be dedicated and willing to spend hours upon hours on the HW. After all this is college not high school. You must work hard, practice and study until the info sticks!!
Black is a highly awarded math teacher, and this seems to have gone to his head a bit. While he's a pretty good teacher, he has a bit of a superiority complex. If you ask a question that he believes to be beneath him, he will answer it condescendingly or not at all. Expect difficult tests.
He is the toughest professor I have ever taken
Hardest Math class I have ever taken, expect to spend your time in the Math Learning Center - and still fail or barely pass.
Even if you do well on the homework you can still do very poorly on the exams. Nothing is weighted so points are straight up points, this makes your GPA drop like a bomb if you're not a good test taker. Homework takes hours. Good teacher, clear lectures, write it all. Don't take his class unless you're willing to dedicate yourself to the material.
I was in his math 141 class, I did all the homework, getting full mark or 1920 something but I still got low GPA. His lectures was good, providing great note, but he wont let u know your overall percentage when U are taking the class.I wont take his class anymore.
he is a tough grader, and his homework are tough as well. i spend a lot of time on it every week. attendance is not mandatory, but DO NOT LATE to class, he will write your name down and take credits from it. take notes during the class, you will need for the test. good luck.
He is tough garder, be aware of him. Study hard or you will fail.
he's a great teacher, very energetic, but his homeworks are tough as hell, really different from the usual HW you'll get, his HWs are weird should i say. and grading criteria is kinda unclear.
People say he's a great teacher, but they all come to Math Learning Center confused. Sometimes you have a feeling that you have learned a lot but in fact there are many problems that you did not understand. People taking him should be aware of that. His HW is different but not that hard, if you understand the material it shouldn't be that difficult
Steven Black's is a tough grader, and his tests are tough. Had to spend hours and hours in MLC to get my HW done. I wouldn't recommend his class at all
Steven Black is one of the best teacher. His lectures are clear and well organized. You should write down everything and note what he adds in. If you have a good note from him, your study will be so much easier. He helps you alot during his office hours or whenever you can find him. Test's hard, but it won't be a problem when you've done all the hw
Steven is really a fantastic professor! Always passionate in the lecture. Homework is in offered a special way, but not so hard if you do work on it, the lowest score will be dropped. Tests are easy and there are some extra credits offered. Strongly recommend his class.
Clear lecture. Funny and interesting way of presentation. not the easiest class but if u actually pay attention to his lecture it will be easy. i recommend u to take his class.
Teaches by the motto "to coddle you is to throw you to the wolves". He doesn't give anything easy but he prepares you perfectly for the math you'll have to do with perfect notes and lectures. He is easily the best math teacher I've had so far.
He is an awesome one. Every lecture is well prepared and organized, he makes sure you understand thoroughly the material. Homework and test are kind of tricky sometimes but not extremely hard. Make sure you follow instruction he stated on the test or you will lose point.
BE ON TIME! Points taken off for being even a few seconds late. Great teacher-funny and explains things well. Hard tests-STUDY. Not much homework but can take a while.
Steven Black is great if you're on top of things but you have to 100% invested in order to get a good grade. My only complaints are the tests were hard to get done in the given amount of time and his grading involves very few points. For example his tests are out of 50 points and his homework sets are out of 20 points. Do the extra credit!
Hard class, you have to try your best for it. He's really funny and cares a lot about if you come in late or not lol.
Steven Black is the very best lecturer that I have ever encountered. Go to class, pay attention! You will have everything you need to be successful if you do that. Homework is weighted as heavily as exams. It helps to check it with your peers. If you understand the HW you will be prepared for exams. Just put in the work! Oh, and don't be late!
He's a great teacher but his class is very hard. even if you are SLIGHTLY weak with algebra, this class will be painful. He's a super nice guy and it's clear he cares about his students. His homework and tests are hard. He encourages students to come into office hours for help
I can't say enough good things about Mr. Black. He is by far the kindest teacher ever. he will go out of his way to help you if you visit during office hours. While there is almost no extra credit, if you take good notes and do well on the homework, it is an easy 4.0. Truth be told, I couldn't select enough good tags about him. You will learn!
He's such a good teacher that I've considered getting a math degree. Not because I'm amazing at it but because he makes math both interesting and engaging. I'd 100% recommend him to anyone who thrives under good teaching. If/when he offers practice exams, practice them and you'll do really well on the exams. Best teacher I've had at GR thus far.
He is very good at lectures and gives plenty of chances to ask questions. But a lot of it depends on you studying and teaching yourself because some of the stuff on the homework is not what he taught in class.
So hard.. I spent a lot of time... However, he is the best professor I've taken. He really teaches well. But test is so hard.
Homework is worth 50% of your grade, which is a good thing and a bad thing because you can work with others but he is a really tough grader. Can come off as a little condescending if you aren't good at the concepts right away.
Amazing professor! He explains everything with great detail. Tests are very similar to his practice problem (he gives practice problems and tests before any test). He is also very helpful during his office hours.
I recommend taking Black for calculus! He is super organized and his lectures are engaging. Never have had better looking notes from any other class. Test are 50% of grade and homework is the over half. If you want to understand calculus, take him!
Best Calculus / Math teacher of my life. Whether you like Math or not, you will like it after taking a class with him. He explained the materials very well, and his grading is fair; pay attention to him, and you won't fail. HWs are pretty straightforward; exams are based on HWs. Calc might be hard, but not with him being the teacher. Never be late!
Good calc teacher, explains things well and will take his time. Pretty nice and fun guy. HW does get a lot harder so make sure you always try your best. Tests are pretty easy if you understand the homework. Never be late though, he will make a big deal about it. Good idea to make a study buddy for the class if you wanna do better.
Most people his exams are hard. But.. that is not true. Focus on HW. Then, easy 4.0
Overall, Mr. Black is a great teacher. Don't bother asking questions about the homework during class because he is SUPER vague. He is much more helpful during his office hours. Make sure you are on time to class or he will most likely call you out in front of everyone as you walk in. I didn't even have the textbook for this class and did just fine.
The best Professor in GRC, confirmed! He really puts efforts in his lecture, and is very clear in explaining concepts. Homework isn't much and is fairly easy, and accounts for (roughly) 45% of your grade. Tests are very similar to the homework; they go hand-in-hand basically. Review your homework carefully and you can breeze through the test!
He is overall the best teacher I've ever taken at Green River. He always makes sure you feel comfortable so you don't have to put yourself up with a lot of pressures and stress while going to class or doing exams. He has a great sense of humour and is very clear about every topic he teaches.
Best math professor I ever had. He always answers questions and explores each topic in detail. His personality is very friendly, he is good at joking. Homework is small, and you dont need to use the textbook. The tasks in the tests are very similar to the trial versions. It is obvious that he loves his subject very much, lectures are interesting.
Overall he wasn't a terrible teacher but I found it was very difficult to ask him clarifying questions as he would in a way make you feel kinda dumb. His lectures are pretty good but only take him if you generally keep up well with math because otherwise it's kinda hard to get help from him.
TOverall his teaching style was good. The only thing is that his example in class isn't the same on the homework. The homework were hard and the grader is very picky! He had some quiz and the test were hard. The tests were hard to do and finish under an hour. I didn't have a final due to the snow so there were only 3 major test that was worth 75%.
He is a very good teacher with a very clear lecture. He really wants all his students to pass. The practice hw is very similar to his test. He is also very big with being on time.
He's a great teacher. The only problems I really had is his test are 75% of your grade which is pretty unrealistic. And some problems on the test are not taught in class. Other than that he's a good teacher.
Steven is such a good professor. He teach very clearly and give the homework for the practice. But when it turns out for the exam day, there is some problem that he havent teach in the class. He give the practice before the exam! You have to study from there because most of the test are from the practice also from the homework
Fantastic teacher. Gives great presentations and presents detailed and neat notes. Homework is like the examples, and tests are like the homework. Come to class, take good notes, make you sure you understand the concept of every single hw problem before you turn it in and you will do GREAT. I would jump at the chance to take Prof Black again.
TAKE PROFESSOR BLACK IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE. His lectures are amazing, he goes based off of the class feedback, very good at building up the concept and making sure that you understand where he is getting his numbers/equations. The homework requires out of the box thinking, but his grading is very clear. Tests are like the practice (almost exactly)
I have completely no idea how he has such grading. He is probably the worst calculus professor I have ever had. He always tries to push students limits in understanding due to his wired organization. HE NEVER GIVES PRACTICE PROBLEM BEFORE EXAMS, AND HE DOES NOT UTILIZE THE WAMAP PROBLEM SYSTEM FOR STUDENTS TO PRACTICE.
study hard if you want a great grade
Steve is the coolest math teacher in GRC. His way of teaching is relaxing, funny and understandable. There are lots of HW, but that helps you a lot. You shouldnt skip class. Exams are quite hard for the majority of students, but they seems easy, he likes adding challenging questions in exams for you to "conquer". btw I got 4.0, easily
Professor Black is an amazing instructor. He goes in depth and enjoys having the class figure out concepts before he explains them. Attendance and participation are big, you won't pass if you skip. He only grades 5 problems from each homework, but he's also a very hard grader. He's too smart for his own good and he has high expectations.
Lectures were easy to follow - Prof Black didn't use long powerpoint slides, and every step is given clarification. Homework was reasonable and we had time in class to ask questions about homework. Practice problems for exams were especially helpful.
He is the best professor in GRC. His lecture is super clear! As long as you do homework by yourself, you will be fine on tests. I recommend going to math learning center to get help for homework. Tests are quite similar to the homework problems. Good luck!!!
He is one of the most amazing instructors at GRC, I really enjoyed his class as he introduces the topics in a way that is easy to understand and inclusive of the students. Calculus is a tough subject in itself but it was made interesting and fun because of him.
I wouldnt say he is a terrible teacher but I could not comprehend any of the calculus. I know that a lot of people like him but I did not feel that way. He is a great person and Im sure his lectures were helpful to others, but not me.
I have not taken a better professor at green river than professor Black. His lectures are about as good as it gets. He can be a little tough on grading, but overall you will learn the material if you show up to class. He is very friendly and loves to answer question. If you have the opportunity to take him, then do it.
he had a lot of energy for an 8 am class. he Does not help you with homework problems in class. his grader was very tough which resulted in me getting a few B's on his homework assignments. exams were very difficult and the review sheet that he gave out somewhat helped. All in all, I do not recommend taking his class. he also writes his own reviews
Professor Black will call you out when youre late and doesnt accept homework if youre late the day its due. Other than that he knows how teach. His tests are similar to Hw and practice questions. Do not skip class because I spent most of my days in the mlc.
Good lectures, reasonable homework, and exams that are directly reflective of the assignments. He calls on people randomly, which I hate, but he is understanding if you can't answer. I did not use the textbook. He gives out reasonable partial credit on exams. I missed class several times and was fine with the notes, but being late is a deduction
Professor Black is very enthusiastic about what he teaches, which makes it easy to learn. If you make sure you understand the homework and are willing to ask questions, you will do fine. His assignments won't force you to spend a lot of time on the class so make sure you understand things well.
His amount of homework is intimidating, but it really helps you learn. For his exams, make sure you go over and understand clearly the examples in the lectures and the homework, and you will be fine.
Very straightforward and streamlined class. Lectures are really engaging and he is very organized. Gives extra credit for catching mistakes on the homework, and also goes over homework questions. Gives answers to homework so that you know you're on the right track, but requires that you show your work.
He's a good teacher; his homework and exams are pretty easy. However, in my opinion, the exam time is too limited, only 1 hour (58 minutes for exact) to complete it. He also cares for students, just because we study online so the activities are limited but he would definitely invite you if there are some club or fun meeting with people who lovemath
Good professor in person however, as an online professor, not the greatest. The homework was garden upon completion, meaning there was no way to see where youre at on understanding before the tests. The tests make or break your grade. Weighted at 75% of your grade if you mess up once youre pretty much screwed for the rest of the class.
Dont take him, he is a very tough grader, only puts a few questions on the exams, if you miss a couple points on one question your overall grade will go down a lot. Oh, and doing the hw isn't going to save you, exams are 75% of the grade and hw is 25%. He does seem like a good professor but his grading and his exams are just going to make you fail
I really enjoy the way that Professor Black explains the material. He is very logical in the way he displays complex topics and makes them very easy to understand. Tests are worth 75% of your final grade, however the majority of the questions on the test are very similar to those on the homework.
If you can avoid professor black, you should do so. The class was supposed to have daily zoom meetings, but he just sent us several hours' worth of prerecorded lectures to watch every week. He refused to meet over zoom and never gave feedback on anything. This is a professor to avoid unless you like to feel like you're trying to teach yourself math
All the lectures were videos and if we had any questions we would have to ask them on the forums on Wamap. He offered no office hours it's the first I've seen if you had question he would basically tell you to ask your classmates. A lot of people were lost throughout the class and basically, everyone had to beg him for a pre-test.
He is tough . Any problem you have , he would NOT try to understand your circumstances. No matter what he is right ! The test will make or break your grade. It very few problems which will not give you chance to your understanding and very limited time on the test!
The teacher's homework is one document a week. His lecture is very clear and easy to understand. His exams are very, very heavy. His homework needs to be uploaded. Online exams are fixed-time. Time is very tight. Teachers are very nice people. Because exams account for 75%, every exam is very important. There are three exams. Each unit is an exam.
Test heavy! When I took this course online it was not easy. If you did the homework perfectly but missed the test, it was a failing grade. No make ups for test days and little help in the class. Tests were short and technology reliant. Not good tech? Big problem. Not good at computing math super fast? Really big problem.
Extremely tough grader. Grade is pretty much depended on how well you do on your tests. Didn't do well or failed a test? You've pretty much failed the class then. Homework and tests are written by him. Lectures are pre-recorded and long. You will most likely end up teaching yourself math online. Best to avoid.
I hope professor black is a better professor in person, because he is one of the worst professors I've had at green river so far. If you do bad on the exams, you will fail the class. There are online forums where you can ask questions about the hw, though its mostly students helping other students. Get ready to teach yourself. Would not recommend.
His lectures a very relevant to homework and exams. That being said, its very difficult to get a decent grade here. No office hours (?!) and not very helpful: help is left up to other students on the online forums. 3 exams (25% each) with around 5 questions each that youll barely be given enough time to finish. Screw up 1 exam problem? Goodbye 5%
I will give him that he explains things pretty well in his pre-recorded lectures. That said the man can only be reached through WAMAP so you can't ever just sit down and talk to him about your confusions and even when you message him he doesn't get back to you within a day or two so get ready to teach yourself. His tests also only have 5 questions
If you dont need to take this class dont. Only 55 minute test that has anywhere from 5-7 problems plus some part a) and b). If you fail even one test youre done and theres only 3 tests. Hard to reach, its ask your classmates first then him. Homework has no guidance some of the lectures help. He also makes his own homework sheets.. good luck
He, at the bare minimum, is fine. He lays out clear expectations and provides necessary material through WAMAP. He provides the opportunity to work together through way of forums. He has 3 exams weighted at 75% of your grade. No opportunity to make up lost points. Cant put your absolute 100% towards this course? Then AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Id recommend someone else for this class like Beckwith or Kang if theyre available. It is extremely difficult to do well on his exams- I had to rush through them just to finish within a couple minutes of it being due. It does not help that they are weighted so heavily as well. Best of luck if you take him, be sure to utilize outside resources.
Very fast paced work to do and is very strict on showing work.
He doesn't do office hours, He doesn't do lectures he just sends pre-recorded youtube lectures, He doesn't grade the homework, he doesn't help with homework he encourages the students to ask other students for help on homework instead. overall I don't know what he does that makes him a teacher because all he does is send the class content updates.
Made the most complicated subjects easy to understand. Never confused after a lecture. Little room for error. Missing a few of points on exams will drop your grade. Vague feedback. Didn't use textbook. Weekly HW, 10-15 questions. Recorded lects >30mins long, released day by day. Exams taken at scheduled class time. HW 25% exams 75% (3 exams).
Just don't take this professor at all exams are only 10 questions and make up 50 points so if you miss one question it drops the grade by 10%. He rushes through lectures like crazy you will get about 10 lectures a week. His due date for homework is 5 pm but he will not change it no matter what even though he will lose nothing from it.
The way that the course material was presented made it fairly easy to understand. The professor responded within a decent amount of time, although the exams and homework did take a little while to be graded. There was a lot of peer interaction in which we could ask each other questions and help explain how to solve problems we were struggling with.
The worse professor I have ever seen. It's almost impossible to get full credit for homework. He gives super short of time to complete the exam. No sympathy, not understandable. Don't take his class.
The way his class was organized wasn't the best. When I took his class from what I saw your grade was solely based on how well you did on exams. He would enter homework grades but once you take the exam he would replace the homework grade with the exam score. He gave out four exams the whole quarter.
He is good and I would like to take him again but he has a lot of homework but is still well organized in his class.
Very disappointed. Not willing to help when asked for more explanation through additional video's. No option for Zoom meetings, only contact is through forums on WAMAP. Students are expected to help others students through forums. Lets someone else grade homework/exams. Uses YouTube lectures that were recorded years ago. No option for extra credit.
Amazing lectures. If you do your work and pay attention you'll be fine. Put in extra work and your grade will reflect that. He gives heads-up to everything and informs you everything you must know for your exams. Nothing unreasonable. Every point i missed in this class was completely on me. Only complaint is very short exam times.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but you will miss a lot in 1 day. Calc moves fast/is all connected, if you don't understand topic you will be left behind. Hw starts slow, then ends up being about 2 sheets per week. Answers are provided on hw, you're graded on work. He had great explanations and made topics easy to understand.
Prof Black is great. He can be a little strict if you're late to class. No notes online, so you'll need some friends to send you notes if you want to keep up, but you have to be there to understand the concept. Taking notes is easy in his class since he tells you what to write down. He's also very caring, always willing to help work out problems.
His lectures are amazing, almost every day I walked out feeling like I knew what to do and that he was Einstein Jr. One small issue is that there are only 2 categories going into the grade, 75% tests (3 tests all quarter) and 25% homework. If you did bad on a test your grade tanked a decent bit due to the test being work 25% of your overall grade.
Mr. Black was a pretty good professor. His lectures were fine, though it could be difficult to follow along. Homework wasn't bad, but 75% of your grade is from exams, so the final exam hurt my grade. He's nice and funny, but he never knows when the class is struggling or if just a few students understand. I'd take him again, but he wasn't the best.
Although Professor Black was very intelligent, well-spoken, and gave great lectures, his grading scale was simply too hard. I understood the material and was doing well in his class up until the last chapter of instruction which was very rushed and not explained well. This resulted in an extremely hard final that tanked everyones grades.
Mr. Black is a very passionate professor which makes his lectures fun and engaging. However, the tests are always unnecessarily hard and many students get grades in 60% range. If you are passionate about math and don't worry about your gpa this class is a good fit, but if gpa is important take someone else. (Gpa scale is also strict)
Class was somewhat challenging; be ready to spend a lot of time on his class. However, he was an amazing teacher that gave great lectures and was well-spoken. On Fridays he'd do a study day and provide a YouTube video which explained the topic very well. Only 10-12 homework assignments, but make sure to study for the tests.
Great lectures and does a great job getting the point across. Tests pretty much determine your grade but he is always around and super helpful.
He rambles on long stories in lectures, is "surprised" when he runs out of time, and then crams tons of material in to online lectures. Unwaveringly strict about deadlines. Not helpful and kind of rude in class whenever others asked him about class material, making it hard to come to him and feeling unapproachable. Dud class despite good result.
Homework is alright. Reasonable due dates. Grades are heavily depedent on tests (75%). Dropped from a 4.0 to a 2.9 with just the final exam. Short exam times. Often had to rush to finish them. Lectures are engaging and funny, but attendance is required to get notes. Posts videos on Friday going over the topic left off on Thursday.
Great at teaching
The class is extremely test heavy and heavily determines your grade. There isn't too much homework and he gives good lectures. Overall an extremely nice professor but the class does require quite a bit of time.
There's 3 tests in total which are worth a lot of your grade. The biggest thing is that you need to spend a lot of time with this class to fully be able to understand the concepts and you'll do good.
Do everything you can to not take this class
Mr. Black gives great lectures and was very thorough in explaining the content for units 1-2. But unit 3 contained more challenging concepts that I feel like were a bit rushed which really tanked everyones grade after the final exam. He has 3 exams throughout the quarter that are worth 75% of your grade so be sure to study.
He gives you lots of extra credits on exams. He is a tough grader on homework. He won't accept any submissions after the deadline and won't change the grade after grading. Professor Black is overall a very nice professor for me.
Professor Black is extremely easy to follow and he made learning Calc much easier to me. He constantly urges the students to ask questions when reviewing homework and on more difficult topics (unit 3). He gives extra credit on tests so if you are struggling on a specific topic, you can work on some fairly easy extra credit problems.
Mr. Black is an amazing professor. He has passion and cares about the subject and his students. His courses are well organized and easy to follow. My only complaint is that he doesn't have much flexibility with due dates and the homework was turned in on paper, so if you're absent, you're out of luck. The overall workload is manageable.
I really love this professor. He is really good at explaining. Attendance is a bit harsh but everything's great. As long as you do his homework properly, you can do well in your exams.
Steven Black was a very great teacher. He enthusiastically always taught the lessons he gave which made it fun to learn along with him. His homework load was also very light as we only got two weekly assignments. However, his grading scale was tough on those who aren't good test takers as 3 tests made up 75% of the grade.
The 3 exams are worth 70% of your grade. Hw is due at 5 pm on a Friday. If you miss a single class it's game over. He doesn't post lecture notes online. He yaps a lot. Doesn't explain when you have questions, instead, he'll ask you a question in response. If you get 90+ on hw and quizzes but fail 1 exam, you won't be able to pass. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Only take this class if YOU KNOW YOU WILL DO WELL. This is because tests are the only thing that determines your grade. Homework and quizzes do NOTHING. GOOD LUCK!
Don't take this class, at least not online, if you aren't naturally really really good at math. This class also has only 3 big exams, worth a huge part of your grade. The professor seemed nice from the few interactions I had with him, but the class was definitely a struggle
Each test is worth about 20% of your grade and there is 4 tests throughout the course. His questions on the test usually reflect whats on the study guide but is a very harsh grader. NEVER answers your questions that you have in class or even in the forms. He just says to refer to the forms which frankly has NO help at all. Dont take him.
Each test is worth 17.5 percent of your grade and there are 4 of them. He is a good professor just don't miss class and study before exams. He will often choose hard versions of problems.
He's the best math teacher I've ever had! His lectures were fun and easy to understand. 75% of your grade is based on 3 different tests, the other 25% on homework which is graded harshly, but he offers a lot of extra credit on each exam, and nothing on them is unexpected. I hope to be able to take him again.
He was able to teach very well, and it is very clear he is passionate about math and teaching his students. He covers the material well and explains using proofs. His class is very test-heavy, and he is not flexible when it comes to due dates regarding homework. It is important to take notes and work on reviewing the material well.
This review isn't about how hard the class is. His standards are ridiculous. You could solve a problem that is identical with a side by side video of his lectures and he still will chose to give no credit on the grounds that you "did not show enough work"
Excellent lectures with clear, complete, bottom up explanations and illustrations. Homework is interesting but difficult. No late submissions. Heavy exam grade weight, but exams are directly based on the homework so there will be no surprises if you study. Attempt homework early and ask for help early, it can take a few days to get feedback online.
Professor Black is engaging and passionate about the subject. While the grading is test-heavy, he offers generous extra credit to offset this. Unstuck AI proved helpful for test prep alongside the textbook. Attend class, do the homework, and you'll do well.
I will actually be taking him again for MATH142. He was an amazing prof, gave good notes, the exams were exactly what the hw was, and he only gave 4 problems roughly from the hw a day. The way to turn in the hw is weird but not too difficult, and although he doesn't have exceptions to late stuff, he drops your lowest hw grade. Funny and very chill!
1. He's decent. Only take him if you're serious about math. He's good for those who LOVE math. 2. For those who are only doing MATH 142 for credit. I don't recommend it since the class was quite difficult. Homework was long and he gave lots and lots of notes. But you mostly learn through youtube and self-study. I recommend going to math tutors!
He teaches really well and throughly explains everything. The tests are exactly like the homework and are pretty easy and only like 10 questions. He also has an extra credit question that really help
This is the second quarter I had Professor Black, and he was very enjoyable. He wants you to shout out your answers so don't be afraid to speak up. For the homework, you can't turn it in late at all, but to make up for it he drops your lowest homework grade. He was very funny and personable and made it as enjoyable as possible while teaching well.
Had weekly homework and discussions. Three exams that were weighted 70% in total but almost all of the questions are from the homework. His lectures are like Michele Wallace's, very loud and active. He does call you out by name to answer some questions during lecture. Just do well on the homework, he drops the lowest one though.
WARNING! Do not take this professor. He doesn't seem to actually care about helping you learn the material. He also gives LOTS of homework and videos. He also does not care if you have technology issues and doesn't seem to realize students have other classes and jobs on top of his class. I felt like the tests are packed 2 into 1 for material.
My goat... Professor Black is passionate about teaching and you are able to see that in every lecture. He explains things very well and made me excited to go to class. However he does randomly call on students but if you don't know what to do he is very kind and doesn't make you feel bad for giving a wrong answer.
Amazing professor, lectures helped me understand the material a lot. Exams are weighted very heavy, but the questions on the exams are similar to the practice study guides. Your lowest homework grade is dropped, and your final grade is rounded to the nearest whole number when converted to a decimal grade (Hopefully you get xx.5 or higher..!)
learn various stuff
BEST MATH TEACHER! I take his Math151 Class and it was one of the most straight forward class ever. I do acknowledge that he gave quite some homework, but that's his method to get you to learn. Because the test that he gave is around 90% similar to the homework. His grading consists of 10% student discussion form, 20% HW, and 70% Test.
