Very cool and funny guy. Made a very very very very boring class at least tolerable. Responds to emails pretty quickly and is an all around nice guy.
The topics were more interesting than I thought they would be. Papers are pretty easy to write as long as you read and go to class for discussions. You could also submit drafts that he would grade and return for you to fix.
Steven is a great teacher even though some of the material is rather confusing, and at times boring. We had daily quizzes over our reading, which actually helped to keep us current with the reading assingments. His exams are moderately easy and he gives you good study tips. Overall, he's really nice and nerdy funny!
Best. Teacher. Ever. Hilarious, great discussions, and fair. This guy's gonna go on to be a great prof when he gets his Ph.D.
Awesome professor
Could be a very dry class, Social/moral problems in US, but he was enthusiastic and engaging. I just remember him writing/drawing on the board figuring out the issues, calling on people and spinning around shouting Yes! with each point, often dawdling back and forth wrestling with the lesser "ehhhhh" kind of remarks trying to make them fit. Great!
Lectures were interesting and he was quite funny. Don't sit in the back, he mumbles quite a bit. No real book, but excerpts of philophers writings-MUST READ THESE. His tests were cake, so long as you filled out the study guide and went to class. Was very unbiased with views on religion; which is how it should be in this sort of class.
He is great. He makes class fun and interesting. Extremely friendly and nice. He is one of the best professors I have ever had!
Really was a fun teacher, I sat in the back all quarter, bad idea, I suggest you be actively engaged in the class. Definitely do the readings, his quizzes don't require reading (open notes) but your essays will suffer if you don't, trust me. Learn as much from him as you can!
This guy is great. Friendly, funny, and you can tell he loves what he does. You're guaranteed at least a B with bare minimum effort. Learned a lot from this guy. If youre a girl whose into dorky guys, you'll love this guy. Just saying... haha
There couldn't be a better philosophy teacher, hands down. This was a Saturday class, so things were a bit different than they might normally be, but daily quizzes not hard at all if you take notes and read. Papers and exams slightly harder. Amazing teacher. In 5 years at OSU, I learned more in this class than in any other. Take his class. Amazing.
He was by far on of the best professors I've ever had here. He was funny and kept all the material interesting. His teaching style kept me interested in the class and his ability to be personal in a large classroom was astounding.
Steven has a good sense of humor. He's very intelligent and knowledgable. Quality professor.
So extremely offbeat but in a good way, and gives us essay questions/key terms ahead of time (for midterm), PLUS one full cheat sheet able to be used on all exams. Quizzes are open note but timed on Carmen.
Very easy class. Just go to class and take notes. You'll be fine on both the exams and quiz. Only 2 exams and not CUM, 10 quiz which is very easy. He's quite interesting and laugh every joke himself says...
Nice man. Great examples. Lots of humor. Most enjoyable. Excellent teaching abilities. He should go far. 10/10
Steven Brown is amazing. He is so funny and entertaining. I legitimately enjoyed coming to class not to mention I learned so much. Because of this class, I want to minor in philosophy. He explains difficult concepts with ease and his class(es) will be stay with you and change your perspective on life. Also, his class is pretty easy.
Great professor. Intelligent, passionate, knowledgeable, and can display the concepts to others with ease. Very active and upbeat, infectious energy. Makes you want to learn and understand. Allows for discussion and debate in a civil classroom setting without invalidating anyones opinions. Does not introduce his own beliefs in teaching. overall A++
I had this class as an 8am and I can honestly say it was worth getting up to come to. Professor Brown was so energetic, passionate, and hilarious. Despite his refreshing spastic-ness, he is extremely knowledgeable and very clear when explaining concepts. The only two grades were the midterm and the final, though, so take good notes.
He is the man. Lectures are clear as a whistle. Exams are essentially your notes, so take good notes of what he says and writes on the board. Taking his class was like a breath of fresh air. He's hilarious, understands the material well, and makes the student really enjoy philosophy. Would take again.
I had Dr. Brown for Ethics and Intro to Philosophy and am so glad I had the opportunity to take classes with him. He is very energetic and extremely fair. If you need help he is always right there. He has to be Ohio States finest. If you make an effort to care about the class he makes an effort to care about your grade. He likes to maximize the min
Been at OSU for 3 years, and this guy is the best lecturer I've ever had. Clear, hilarious, and great at making the points he wants you to know. First time I've ever literally looked forward to going to a lecture every day. Take any class you can with this guy, he's fantastic!
Best prof I ever had at OSU. Take one of his classes, you'll actually learn and and you'll love him.
Mr. Brown is the best teacher I have ever had. He explains readings very clearly and is genuinely interested in helping. He does not talk down to you, which especially made me feel more open to talk to him when I was having issues or questions on a topic. Only 2 quizzes and 2 exams, no homework. You'll actually learn and have fun!
Funny professor! Going to class is an enjoyable experience. Youll learn a lot about the problems with art as well as random tidbits about the world when he digresses:) Easy A Only 2 midterms and 1 paper. you get a cheat on test. I recommend this class to anyone as long as you do not get offended easily by controversial subjects. He won't sugarcoat
Funny professor! Going to class is an enjoyable experience. Youll learn a lot about the philos as well as random tidbits about the world when he digresses:) Easy A Only 2 midterms which you will be allowed a cheat sheet for. I recommend this class to anyone as long as you do not get offended easily by controversial subjects. He won't sugarcoat
Asian Philosophies was the easiest class I've ever taken (cheat sheets allowed for exams that are already very simple, and only one short paper), and it was also interesting. Steven Brown is awesome.
Class was great
My favorite teacher so far at Ohio State. He comes into class every day full of energy and coffee in hand. It was the only 8am I would ever take again. He makes possibly dull content entertaining. If you are looking for a fun, easy A class, take this. You will learn a lot about how/why we think the things we do.
Fun class. It was his first time teaching it so he struggled at times. EZ gen ed.
Best classroom experience I've had at Ohio State! I came for the credit, I stayed for the captivating lectures, and I left with a new view on the world and the people around me. Steven Brown is simply amazing.
By far my favorite professor at OSU. I took 2 courses from him and looked forward to each and every class. I have always loved philosophy, but friends I have made in his classes has zero interest in philosophical debates before his class, yet still thoroughly enjoyed his lectures and learned quite a lot. I would recommend Dr. Brown to anyone!
I expect very little out of GE courses like PHILOS1300. That being said I looked forward to coming to class because I knew that Steven made the material interesting. He makes getting an A a very achievable goal, simply show up to class and take some notes. That isn't a lot to ask for when you spend most of the class discussing Star Wars.
Dr. Brown makes class entertaining, tying current events and stereotypes into his everyday lessons. He relies a lot on class discussion, so this is very interesting if you care at all about the subjects. He has quizzes every few weeks, but he only puts them in if they helps your grade, so it's an easy GE. Attendance is optional, but is extra credit
Terrible professor who makes this GE so challenging. Exams are open notes but your points get chipped away so fast. Papers are harshly graded on, and my second optional paper was not even graded when the final grade came out. A lot of extra credits but those pull up grade like 1%. If you are taking Phil 2120 avoid this guy. Tried hard but only B+.
I loved this class so much! I took ethics initially to satisfy a GE but I fell in love with philosophy and am now minoring in it. Professor Brown has become one of my favorite people in the entire world. He is funny and his lectures are my favorite part of the day. Take this class- it won't disappoint.
SO, I got a B on an exam I studied so hard for. Like I had a study guide and it was pointless. Homeboy does the most when he is teaching. Like he gives long examples that have NOTHING to do with the subject.
Good lecturer. Doesn't personally grade tests or papers, passes them along to other graders
Prof Brown has an incredible way of teaching even complex concepts in a way that an average person can not only understand but contribute to the conversation. He values your opinion and encourages you to think for yourself.
He's a funny guy; his class isn't necessarily the most fun, but he makes it pretty entertaining most days.
Dr. Brown is a phenomenal teacher. He is clear and concise about what you need to know, and makes every day entertaining. Midterms and the paper are easy, and he gives optional quizzes and an extra paper to help with grades - these aren't counted against you if they hurt your grade. He also gives extra credit for participation/attendance. Take him
There are few ways to get points making it hard to bring your grade up or get a good one because he is a tough grader. You can take the final and write another paper to bring up your grade. Rambles in class making it hard to understand when the information is important enough to write down and what will be on the exams & Atten. basically mandatory
Don't take if looking for an easy A. Not a lot of work, but the papers and exam essays are graded harshly with weird symbols no one understands with no criteria or rubric given to be graded so harshly. Grades not recorded online until the class begged him to do so. Gives little feedback and never answers questions clearly. Very hard to raise grade.
I took this for a GE credit and he was a great professor. The tests and one mandatory paper were easy. He gave several opportunities to raise your grade. He makes a real effort to make lectures interesting. The side rants were entertaining and the content was never really difficult. If you show up to lecture, you're guaranteed to do well.
Dude is hilarious. Great prof that makes class fun to come to.
Nice guy and his lectures are funny but his lectures can be confusing and it can be hard to decipher what information you actually need. The class is graded on so few things that it is a bit stressful, but as long as you actually come to class you should be fine.
Probably my favorite prof at OSU. He is great and teaches a general education class like it should be. It is interesting and stress free, yet still provides you with a great understanding of the subjects. You come out learning something new. If you show up to class you will do well, no curveballs are thrown on the tests and you get a cheat sheet.
Super super nice guy, very fun professor. Slacked off and thought it was gonna be a very easy A and it shouldve been. Didn't study at all on the final and it hurt me.
Dr. Brown is super passionate about philosophy, has good jokes and explains complex topics in easy to understand ways. He teaches the class like a GE should be taught with minimal homework. If you pay attention in class you'll do well.
Dr. Brown is a great teacher and I highly enjoyed the class I took with him. Lectures are pretty much required as that is where you receive the notes and information that is on the quiz. The only homework consisted of the occasional online quiz and reading some short papers before class. His lectures are super informative.
Awesome, funny professor! It is surprising how much energy he has every single class. The material is super interesting, and he tries a lot to make obscure philosophical concepts easy to swallow. Few assignments, and they're all pretty easy.
Dr. Brown is hilarious and passionate about the material. We talked about Star Wars a lot and watched a decent amount of videos, so if that's not your thing this professor might not be a great fit. You don't really have to study (you get a sheet of notes for exams), he gives extra credit, and the work load is minimal, so great for a GE class.
Professor Brown is AMAZING! His lectures are hilarious and he is very good at explaining the material. His quizzes and tests are pretty easy and you get a cheat sheet for exams. His class was amazing; it was the only class I didn't dread going to and that I was actually excited to attend that semester. Would defintely take him again!
Professor Brown is amazing. He really knows the subject that he is teaching and his lectures are very interesting. You get a 1% extra credit by attending the lectures. There is no homework at all. Just go to the lectures and be prepared for the short answer exams and you will get an A.
If you ever have to take Philosophy class at OSU, you should take him for sure. Lectures are great and interesting. He is an easy smart guy!
Chill and Laid Back Teacher
He is an awesome teacher and makes the class reasonable but he says it is an overtly easy A and that is not true, as he graded papers and exams relatively harshly. The topics of the class were interesting and taught to us well, I just wish he made a better attempt to fulfill his promise of the class being an easy A if you just do the basics...
great professor, very sweet and caring. helps a lot and really cares about his students success
Dr. Brown is definitely passionate about philosophy, but often times gets off topic during lectures. At the beginning of class they said only participation in recitation was required, but then I was deducted credit for missing some lectures. Also, for the papers, they take off silly points. Overall, not a bad class.
This is the type of professor i wish all GE's had. He uses a loose schedule (but always gives an advance on quizzes/exams to study) and the class has a loose structure. This means the classes are always so much more interesting because he allows students to question the content and will dive deep into philosophical questions.
I love this man. He's very type-B with pretty much everything in his class. Short and easy quizzes, very few assignments, and a pretty chill schedule. His lectures are always incredibly enjoyable and they were always the highlights of my week. He also has an ongoing public document for all lecture notes so we didn't need to take any. 10/10 class
Professor Brown is super funny and his lectures are really interesting. He takes notes during the class so you dont have to attend lecture to pass which is nice. There arnt many grades in the class tho so be careful!
Good professor. There are 2 exams that 25% so its test heavy but they are not that many questions and he gives you plenty of time. Loved this class.
Don't take this class if you don't think like a philosophy teacher. His quizzes are so difficult because he makes every question have what seems like more than one answer, and there aren't enough points to make up for the fact that you may miss one trick question on every assignment. He won't tell you when anything is due until a week before.
Would not recommend to take class as a GE. While the quizzes are very straight forward, the exams are a big part of your grade and there are only two of them. I did not regularly attend lectures, but know many people who did and got a worse grade than me.
he is a great philosophy teacher, very passionate and caring of his students! dont take this class if you dont like to think. he encourages us to question and think in his classes. classes are structured nice. a few quizzes, one for each topic, only top 5 count for grade.2 exams and paper +EC opportunity. class require work and critical thinking!
Really funny. Not a lot of grades but everything is open note. His online lectures werent mandatory and we could rewatch later on. I enjoyed his class.
Easy class, pay attention write notes/use his for the quizzes and exams. the answers can almost always be found in the notes. There is only 2 exams and 2 essays. I would highly recommend going to office hours for the essays as they give good feedback on your essay before you turn it in. Overall you NEED NOTES i took this online so he gave us his
Absolutely loved his class! I took this class as well as Death and The Meaning of Life at the same time. Loved it! He really motivated me to learn more about philosophy! He is very funny, cares about his students and is so funny. If you are looking for a fun GE course or want to learn some basic philosophy, take his courses!
What a lovely guy. As long as you have a brain, you will get an A. NO exams. Handful of quizzes that you get multiple attempts on. 3 papers. Reading reflections for participation points. Literally most of the points are participation points. Take this class. Even if you aren't interested in philosophy. I'm not, but he managed to make it interesting
An amazing course and professor. I highly recommend this course. Its easy A if you show up to class and stay up to date on the assignments.
An interesting professor! He has a clear mind and his philosophy classes are not boring! I would like to take his other classes!
Asian Philos was great, super interesting! No need to take notes or get a textbook bc the notes are shared w/you on a doc. Quizzes are all easy based on notes and readings are easy too! Overall you can get an A doing the bare minimum (I did) and lecture is very interesting. The easy grading allowed me to pay attn and actually learn w/o worrying!
Two words: great professor.
Very smart man and an excellent instructor, I looked forward to class.
Dr. Brown is an amazing professor. You can tell from his lectures just how knowledgable and intelligent he is. He conveys the information in a way that keeps you actively listening, retaining the info, and enjoying the lecture as well.
This class is ENTIRELY lecture based with no imagery to look at while the lecture is happening... if you're not an auditory learner, do not take this class. It is very easy to get by, but I did not retain any of the information. I had 250 in my class and 80% of them were doing something else on their computer -- it's one of those types of classes.
He's Awesome
His lectures were one of the best I have ever been to. This course is amazing, its extremely engaging. I love that Professor Brown does not have a fixed syllabus and let's the class take it's own path based on extremely engaging discussions. He is also a very jolly and funny person, so it's a great class to attend first thing in the morning.
Best porf ever.
This class was really interesting, and there were only a couple of easy quizzes, and like 3 papers. He makes class fun and has good discussions. I was worried about taking this class because it sounded boring but his personality makes lectures interesting and keeps your attention really well
My favorite professor at OSU! He is hilarious during lectures and he really gives out good information. Homework is light and stress free and he makes the notes for you so you don't have to. Would definitely take a other class with him if I have the chance.
Overall great class but the randomness of assignments threw me off, he randomly says that there is a reading due next Thursday. There is not an overwhelming amount of reading but there is some required writing. Overall great class and professor.
Professor Brown is awesome. This class is very easy and you can get an A easily by just showing up (attendance is 20%, can miss 3) and doing simple assignments. Many people just showed up at the end of class and got the tophat code but I thought that was crappy and that his lectures were very much worth showing up and listening to. Great professor.
If you get the chance, take a class with Dr. Brown. He is one of the most charismatic, most enthralling professors I've ever had the pleasure to take a course with. I literally created this account to let people know how badly they need to take a course with him. 100/10 would recommend. Life changing lecturer.
Great guy who knows his stuff and wants the best for the students. He teaches you a lot about life during this class and no matter what your opinions are, you will learn at least something valuable in this course.
Just amazing. Super willing to talk about cool stuff outside of class. He cares a lot about the subject matter and helping students with it. One of the coolest dudes of all time. Also likes great music. Based guy.
Such a cool guy. Very open about his personality and lets it shine through his work, genuinely cares, and is pretty funny. Not really any grades in this class, I didn't even take notes, I'd just sit and listen!
Brown is an excellent public speaker, and he knows how to keep his audience engaged. Very laid back and chill. One the easiest classes I've ever taken.
I love Prof. Brown. Take his class (PHILOS 2120) if you want a fun and easy GE. He is an incredible lecturer, makes students laugh every class, and clearly passionate about his work. Just be careful with attendance because he takes attendance twice every class and it is a decent part of the grade.
Professor Brown was an elite professor, really funny person who made this class interesting and fun to learn. really wants his students to learn and cares about them, workload was low with weekly readings, quizzes were open note and untimed pretty easy, overall a really good class and professor brown is a goat
VERY FUNNY GUY going to lectures is mandatory but it's worth it dude he's so funny with his tangents and you may be thinking "oh isn't going off on tangents bad?" fret not my philosopher friend these tangents are integral to the experience very sad to be done with this class cause i love attending the lectures
I'd recommend Steven for your GE classes. His classes aren't much work, just show up and you will do well. He likes to talk about current events and compare it to class content which makes his class entertaining.
Easy grading and overall fun lectures. His easy grading takes away the pressure, and you can actually just enjoy learning the material he gives. He does a great job of explaining complex philosophies and makes it a fun process by cracking jokes and being retable.
Best and one of the easiest professors in the philosophy department. Come out every lecture with a different perspective. Very funny guy too
Amazing and hilarious guy. I thought a philosophy class was going to be extremely boring and paper heavy, but not with him. There are a few quizzes, but it's open note so they're super easy. The reflections are also super easy. No exams, just an 800 word takeaway portfolio at the end which also isn't that hard. Take him if you need your GE!!!
Dr. Brown is an amazing and caring professor! Each of his lectures are very enlightening and his class has changed my opinions on so many different things. He is so caring to all of his students and is a very flexible professor. He will also make you believe in aliens.
He is absolutely the best!
I LOVED THIS PROFESSOR! Attendance is mandatory, but I would go either way. His lectures are so engaging and fun, his heart is in his work. Only complaint is that assignments were randomly posted so I missed a few, but they are usually 1-2 points each and very easy. If you check Carmen twice a week you'll be fine.
Dr. Brown is a fantastic professor! You can tell that he is super passionate about the subject he teaches. His lectures are thought-provoking, engaging, and often involving real-world events. The majority of your grade consists of two research papers with topics of your choice. Super chill and fun- I would 100% take a class with him again!
Dr. Brown is very funny and is also very good at teaching his content and getting you to think (which is like the whole point of philosophy). Two pretty big papers, but you are encouraged to use AI to help you write, you just can't copy the whole thing from AI. The content is deeply interesting and academically enriching.
Dr. Brown is hands down my favorite professor at OSU. I specifically took this class so I could have him as a professor again. The class itself is engaging, and requires deep thought. Just because Dr. Brown grades nicely does not mean the content is easy, as it is still requires hard work to understand the complex concepts.
He runs class well, but it is reading heavy with annotations every week. Attendance is taken each lecture, but he makes it really interesting each week. The only flaw in class is that he makes you take written notes while he types for the whole lecture, and it's impossible to keep up. Only 2 tests which you get cheat sheets for and are super easy.
He made lectures interesting, even if the topic wasn't. He cares about his students and tries to do right by them. Almost no exams but the exams are very manageable.
Very inspirational and genuinely excited to teach. Wants to have dialogue with his students and welcomes questions and debate.
I had Professor Brown for "Death Meaning Life" and enjoyed his class from the first day to the last. The class itself is straightforward with the formatting. You read and annotate a couple of pages before class, talk about what you read, and then have a midterm and final on it. Great and engaging class overall. Amazing and caring professor!
Very nice. Very kind. Not arrogant. Listens to all viewpoints.
Dr. Brown is incredibly engaging and funny. The readings aren't always interesting but his lectures on the readings are. There are two short AI-assisted papers and two exams with a note sheet. Very easy A. He takes attendance. Take his class for your GE!
My favorite professor this year. He was hilarious and passionate about what he was teaching. There's not too much homework besides a few readings and a weekly reflection—but nothing difficult. The exams are 5 FRQs, but he does the notes for you, so you just need to go over those. On the last day of class, he has a tea ceremony with his Grandma.
Would 10000% recommend professor brown. Any of his classes are probably amazing. Really interesting to listen to and an easy A. Do the homework and you'll be fine. One midterm and a final, you can use AI for both essays and have a cheat sheet for the 5 short FRQs. He makes philosophy interesting.
Professor Brown is a funny and witty professor, he is clearly great at what he does and loves to teach his material. Class was easy to understand and material was always clarified.
Very easy and interesting class. Takes attendance. Weekly reflections (≥3 sentences). Weekly homework: 1-2 readings and ≥3 annotations per reading. Only 2 exams (5 FRQs, 1 AI-assisted essay, and a note sheet). Dr. Brown is very passionate and lectures were engaging. Class highlights besides content: tea ceremony and temple visit. Highly recommend!!
Interesting content and nice professor. Clearly very knowledgable but does not have super structured lectures. Easy A if you attend class.
Classes are fun and interesting, lectures + discussion. There was a large group project component in my class (Global Flourishing) which I don't think was typical of his classes in general, but he was very laid back about things and it worked out really well for my group.
Doc Brown loves to teach his material, he definitely isn't a professor who just reads off a slideshow. I didn't have much interest in philosophy ( I still don't)- but he just made it interesting and made me want to learn about it. Awesome professor, definitely recommend.
Although I took this class for a GE and I don't care much for the subject, Dr. Brown had some of the most interesting lectures I have ever attended. He explained everything really well and is the easiest grader I have ever come across. I would recommend this course for anyone who needs a GE requirement.
Professor Brown is an engaging and passionate teacher who makes this philosophy class super enjoyable. Easy grading, open-note quizzes, and minimal work - plus Unstuckstudy was a huge help for study prep!
Best GE class I have taken so far. All of the topics are interesting. However, lectures can be overwhelming with the amount of stuff he takes notes on. Tests are easy and you can bring a cheat sheet. You have to write an essay using one of the topics and connect it with the thing that you are interested in but you can use AI to help you.
Clear teaching style. Considers viewpoints of lots of people. Charming. Intelligent. Logical. Yes, would take classes from this professor again. Always.
Was a really fun class to go to and was very interesting
This class was so easy and required little work, but it was super enjoyable and so interesting. Not a lot of homework, just weekly readings. Definitely take this for an easy gened and great professor.
He knows what he is talking about and doesn't just read off the slideshows. Lectures can be overwhelming, but you can bring a cheat sheet for the tests and use AI to write essays. He gives you readings approximately once a week and weekly reflections. Easy grader and would definitely take him again.
Stephen Brown is probably my favorite professor I've had so far, he was always so funny and spontaneous. He rarely followed a slide show, he typically just had a google doc open and wrote stuff down as he went on, which made his lectures so easily to pay attention to.
Dr. Brown is a great lecturer who is able to make topics that would usually seem pretty boring to me a lot more enjoyable. Class itself is pretty straightforward, and all of the reading/quizzes are pretty simple. Great class to take overall.
hands down the BEST and most interesting class i've taken throughout all of college. being a GE course, it is very very easy, but due to this, he's pretty strict about lecture attendance and doesn't accept late work. that's literally the only challenging thing about the class. i really want to take this professor again
Took his demo philosophy of religion class in 2022 that he co-lectured and had a conversation with him after a lecture that was so good that it healed my religious trauma, thanks Steve miss u forever
Amazing guy. Very funny and his lectures are super chill. 100% would take again. The class was very interesting and he kept the class non boring.
Such an interactive professor! Grading is very chill, and if you need this elective credit in any way take his class! He comes up with his assignments on the fly and the class gets to explore ideas you're actually interested in. 10/10 wish I could take again.
Lectures were really engaging; you can tell he cares about what he's teaching. Midterm and final are heavily based on lecture. As long as you pay attention in lecture you will get an A. Assignments are fairly easy, not very time consuming, and quite interesting even if you're not a philosophy major.
Very entertaining lecturer. you have to be an donkey to not get an A in this class.
