I love this professor! He is by far the most interesting lecturer I have had in a cmn class. You need to take notes, because he doesn't post the slides online, but I enjoy listening to him lecture because he's funny, and the material is interesting to me. The tests aren't difficult as long as you study. I wish I could take him again!
Favorite prof of the quarter! Lectures were interesting and engaging. He doesn't post slides, but class was so enjoyable I liked going. Open note quizzes, but as long as you take good notes, you'll be fine. 2 midterms and a midterm final. Posts helpful study guides to help you prep for midterms. One of the best CMN classes I've taken at UCD. 5/5!
Hands down one of the best lecturers at Davis. Super easy to pay attention because he's just straight up great at teaching the material. If you go to class and take notes you'll pass for sure. Gives little to no homework. Quizzes at the end of each lecture, but they're open-note and just to make sure you're paying attention.
Terrible test writer. He writes vague questions and then wants specific answers. Does not post lecture slides and has quizzes throughout the quarter that are equally as vague as the midterms and final. Skims over material and leaves students confused with weak examples and clarification.
Enthusiastic professor. 2 exams (very easy if you write down the powerpoint notes & the specific explanations he says in lectures) & 1 final (that could be cumulative or not, for this quarter it was cumulative). provides study guides. passed w/ an A+ w/out going to OH. does not upload ppts. easy class. just make sure you pay attention in lectures.
He gives very broad examples in lecture and only elaborates with his personal experiences(not helpful). Then, gives quizzes daily in class which are very easy. But, his exams are difficult. I studied enough and understood the material to get an A or B. But, did not do well because his questions are so vague. Do not want to take again.
Amazing lectures; clear and interesting. 3 exams (need to really study) and daily quizzes (easy if you pay attention). You MUST take good notes. He's begun to post his powerpoints but they have little info so you must go to class. He asks very specific questions on exams and makes you work for an A. "Skip class, won't pass" has never applied more.
He's a great lecturer, but his exams are INCREDIBLY difficult. Thankfully, he curves them, but it doesn't help much. I advise anybody taking this course to take detailed notes, as his exams get very specific.
Professor Brunner is a new professor and obviously is trying to learn how to structure the class better. He cares about his students and is passionate, but the class was hard. The test questions were either super specific or ambiguous, and the open-ended were nearly impossible to know. The class was way more difficult than it needed to be.
Professor Brunner lectures very well, including relevant examples and an organized layout for notes. He provides the lecture slides, but they do not have much information. Exams are lecture-heavy, so make sure to attend class. Some concepts are on the readings, but the TA gave us the page numbers for the concepts. Group project, but it is not bad.
Best lecturer I've had so far. Not boring and content was relevant to topics. Tests straight forward as long as your study and keep up with readings. Not stressful. There's some good humor thrown in there also. He tries to make class fun. Would definitely take again.
good prof. interesting lectures. only con is the (almost daily) quizzes. not very hard, but you have to be in lecture to take them and for it to be easy, so don't plan on ditching class. exams are pretty straight forward if you do the readings and go the lecture. should probably study a bit too
Lectures are information-heavy and long, but straight-forward. All of the info in the exams/quizzes are easily understood if you understand the lecture. Readings are mandatory as he does not always include the reading material in lecture. He's kind of boring but does a good job of explaining concepts in depth so you really understand them.
Very straightforward professor. GO TO LECTURE! His lecture outlines don't contain a lot of information, so you have to go to get it. Tests are a little tricky, but fair if you did all the reading and studied the lectures. I really enjoyed his lecture style and never felt bored during the 2 hour lecture
powerpoint lectures are really short and he goes in depth during lecture. he uses too many case studies that are weirdly heavily focused most on gender and how men view women based on X. talks a lot and goes 90 mph during lecture. need more than a 5 min break. think he should cut down his lectures. tests are tricky and there's so much information.
Prof Brunner is approachable & gives amazing lectures. The exams are difficult, and very specific. Ask him how to study at the beginning of the quarter, figure out what works for you ASAP because his exams are not easy. If you are hoping to take this as an easy elective, SWITCH OUT of this class. It's a lot of work but it's also fun and interesting
The class is pretty good and intersting. 3 exams and daily pop quizzes, but theyre really easy as long as you pay attention during lecture and write good notes because its open notes for the quizzes. Overall hes a good professor and sort of funny.
He is the best cmn prof. He is super organized. He post lecture notes before classes so that you can print them out and bring them to class. If you go to class, read all the readings and review your notes before exams you will definitely be successful in his classes.
Fantastic professor. One of the most clear and organized lecturers I have ever experienced. A combo of tests and quizzes that do require studying but are very fair. You need to attend lecture and read the readings to do well, but if you do those things and ask questions for clarification, you will do great!
Professor Brunner is very passionate about Non Verbal Communication and wants to make sure that everyone gets the material. However his tests are super hard they are designed for you to completely understand the material. Lots of trick questions and quiz were also very difficult. Reading are mandatory if you want to pass the class.
BEST CMN professor! I took his CMN120 and CMN 122 before and received A and A+ respectively. He is super organized, and you can learn many useful things in his course! He is approachable during his office hour! All questions in his exams are straightforward and extremely fair! You can definitely receive A if carefully taking notes in his class!
Dr. Brunner is a respectable professor who's knowledgeable about communication. But, as a pre-vet major, his class was kinda meh. Although he's very slow at going through the material, he ensures everyone is clear on the subject. I thought it was harder than it was. Had to know every slide and read through the textbook to get an A
Brunner is super straightforward & doesn't try to trick you on exam. I attended about 60% of the lectures but was able to get a good grade. The material he teaches is interesting and he clarifies any questions. He does tend to babble on a certain topic but he has good intentions & keeps the class interesting.
When it comes to his classes he tests on both the book and the lecture material, I like him on a personal level, but his lectures amount to low course relevance when taking tests and quizzes, you'd be better off just reading the book yourself and taking good notes, the way he writes his test is ridiculously difficult to understand. HARD professor.
Dr. Brunner is by far my favorite communication professor at UCD. His exams are definitely lecture heavy, and you will have to show up to class and take good notes, as not everything will be provided just on his slides. He's very engaging however, and he makes his classes interesting. You do have to work for your grade, but I enjoyed the process
Amazing is the only word I can think of when it comes to Steven. His class is extremely well put together. Ive learned more in his class than all other communication classes combined. Yes, his test are difficult. Yes, you have to read. Yes, you have to show up to lecture. But, you walk out understanding the material completely. Highly recommend!!
Do yourself a favor and wait for the other lecturer to take this course. Unlike Brunner, she teaches it with examples and interesting life reflections. The class is boring, lectures are drab. Workload is ok. If you go to office hours you might get some extra help with the exams. Go before the exams.
Nice guy, tries hard and is organized. Posts lectures online. Just found the material uninteresting in its presentation. Felt like I could have just read. Tests are fine.
Steven is a pretty well-organized professor. Two midterms and one final, plus various quizzes that will for sure bring your grade down if you don't do the readings and take lecture notes. His extra credit consists of participating in research studies, but it honestly did not really help my grade as much.
Lectures were well-organized and informative. However, tests were detail-oriented, and he frequently put questions on material that he verbally mentioned in lecture but was listed nowhere else on the powerpoints nor the textbook. Lectures were not podcasted, so attendance was necessary to do well. Not my favorite professor, but solid nonetheless.
Brunner's class was well structured, insightful, and overall a good experience. He does like to make his exams tricky in order to test how well you understood the concepts. Other than that, he also has a quiz each week based off of the lecture/reading and is generally a nice guy. If you dedicate time and effort, you can walk away with an A.
Nice enough guy but dry material and dry presentation. Feels a bit between wanting to be tough and wanting to really make it too easy like cc or something. Exams are ok.
Dr. Brunner is an old fashioned professor. He's not particularly inspiring, he overcomplicates his material, he grades based on a few multiple choice exams, and he doesn't care how well a student does in the class. Student success is not high on his list of priorities; he's there to perform his dry lecture and then assign a test on it. That's it.
I took this professor and he was nice at first but his exams are hard. He talks from the beginning to the end which is awful. He does not know how to stop talking. He needs to know to take breaks. Don't take the class if you can or do not have to.
Awful. Just absolutely the worst professor. I hated this class and his lectures. He's so old fashioned and his exams and projects are tough and not right.
The material is not hard. The CLASS Is HARD. Forget missing a single lecture, there might be a question on a single sentence he mentioned in one of his lectures. I tried very hard in this class. Never missed a lecture, took detailed l notes, and read the book. Hes a nice guy but this shouldve interesting material, and the way he taught it hard
Those negative complainers below are because they skipped class or not read readings. Dr. Brunner is by far the most inspiring and organized professor that I have had in CMN department. I took several courses with him and he really cares his students. His course materials are very interesting and helpful, and he always reiterates important points!
He's funny, he's polite, he's very well prepared. Professor Brunner is a great professor and he really goes above and beyond for his students. He is even willing to SKYPE! This is unheard of in the Man Econ major (minored in CMN) if you fail this class you really did not read the material nor did you pay attention in class. Nothing at davis is easy
Extremely hard exams on interesting topics.
Dr. Brunner is the most inspiring and influential professor for me. CMN 130 is very different from other CMN courses. It has many group works which really help you understand the concept. The knowledge I've learned in this course is very applicable to my future group work. His exam is always fair if you attend lectures and read readings.
I took five courses with Dr. Brunner, and received A/A+ in all his courses. He is the most amazing and responsible professor at UC Davis. The structure of his class and topics he chose to teach were organized and interesting and can help you understand communication theory and research in a holistic way! He is very nice and fair. Strongly recommend
He goes through a lot of material in one day, so I do not recommend skipping class. He does not require a text book because he uploads all of his readings on canvas. There are weekly quizzes or worksheets during discussions and you are graded on three test. Each test he would send you a study guide for only the reading.
The tests are very hard and questions are very tricky. You have to memorize every term and "truly" understands it.
The worst professor that I've had at UCD. I studied the material and I went to each lecture. I also went to office hours and he is the most apathetic teacher on campus. He could care less about his students and how they are doing in the class. Ridiculous, dont take him.
The bad ratings are because people did not do the readings or didn't come to class. Dr. Brunner is one of the most kind professors you will ever have at UCD. He is always available to answer questions and he is super organized.
This was my first quarter at UC Davis. Dr. Brunner has been there for me throughout the entire quarter and has been very supportive. He is extremely accessible and is always willing to meet, even outside of office hours . Like others have said, this is UC Davis and if you aren't willing to put in the effort you won't get good results. He is great.
Hes nice and the topic is interesting. However, he kept saying he want to challenge us from day 1. To a point I am done with this saying. Made his discussion and exam extremely hard, do not want people to really success in his class.
I would like to mention that if you want to do well in his class focus on what he says. You will not pass the class just on his PowerPoint. His quizzes and exams can be difficult, but he does teach the material very well. 1st time I took him I got a B and the 2nd time I got used to his exams and got an A-
Professor Brunner has an incredibly organized class. I always knew exactly what was expected of me, and he graded very fairly. His lectures were very informative. My TA, Chelsea Kim, was very helpful as well. Just do the work and youll be fine.
I would say that Prof. Brunner is the most organized Professor. This is not an easy A class, but it very attainable. He has VERY clear grading criteria and wants to help students succeed. He is a great lecturer and teacher.
He is one of the best professors I have had. He is fun and always willing to meet you and talk to you after class. Exams are hard but def doable if you read the book. Take really good notes and this class will be good for you. He curves exams every time too!!
I really enjoyed the content of the course itself, and the way that Professor Brunner lectured, but I really disliked the way the class was structured. It relied heavily on MC tests and there weren't many chances to explain your thinking in a written format. There also aren't many opportunities for extra credit.
CMN 122 was unnecessarily difficult. The class was very lecture heavy and all quizzes and exams were very difficult. You know something is wrong when he has to curve the exams by 18+ points. He's also very obsessed with saying his class is difficult and that UC Davis is an elite school. Would not recommend.
The tests are incredibly hard, there are very specific questions that you'll only get right if you read the textbook. He talks quite fast so it can be difficult to take notes, but if you don't write it down then you'll miss the information and it's not available on the slides. This class was so much harder than it had to be. Pointless project too.
Dr. Brunner is a great teacher but his class requires you to put in effort. His tests have two parts, one entirely about lecture and the other part all about the textbook. His lectures and class are super organized which was nice because it made the tests straightforward. Hes very kind and passionate about his class. The project & paper were easy.
The worst professor I have had in social sciences. Tests as other students have described are unnecessarily difficult. I received A’s on papers asking me to explain reading and understanding of content. Test are based on his obscure opinions and tinder stories not on content. As students have described it’s based on his stories not content
Passionate, knowledgeable professor. I took this winter 2022. He is easily accessible and really kind if you get to know him. Go to his office hours for help if you need it, he really does care about us. Yes, exams are hard (I'm a bad test-taker too) but if you study hard they're not horrific. Sit in front, get to know him, it'll be easier.
Super sweet and great lectures. He is really funny and engages with students. He gives examples using stories from his own life which is helpful. This class uses lectures AND reading for quizzes, midterms, and the final.
Dr. Brunner is the least accommodating professor I have ever had in my four years at UCD. The exams are difficult for no reason at all, and you are graded on 3 exams (100 pts each) and 3 quizzes (20 pts each). I am begging you to search elsewhere since he makes the class so boring. Lecture slides are also super basic and the way he talks is boring.
Difficulty in this class is mainly based on how densely-packed lectures are with information and how specific exam questions are. Your best bet is to take detailed notes during lecture (especially about any research studies described) and don't skip out on the reading assignments.
I really enjoyed the content of this course; however, the class structure was terrible. The lectures are very heavy, however, the slides are not thorough at all, which means you have to attend class. Professor Brunner copies all the content from the textbook used for the course. Check with the TA to see what you missed on quizzes and tests. :(
The professor is amazing with his lectures and the way he teaches is clear and understandable! While attendance isn't checked, it's necessary to attend in order to not miss out on information. The tests are hard and detail heavy, but with good studying methods I did great on the exams! Definitely recommend this professor for this class!
Professor Brunner is an amazing professor. He is responsible and solid. His lecture is heavy. I would suggest not skipping any class because the exam questions are based on what he said in the lecture, which he doesn't provide on the slides. The exam questions are very specific and challenging.
1 of the few classes I genuinely enjoyed. Lecs are relatable and applicable to real life which make it easy to understand. Tests are a little difficult, but grades can be made up with papers and weekly quizzes
Lectures are material heavy. Exams test your ability to memorize information more than apply concepts; all multiple choice questions with very, very specific answers. Not lenient at all with grading; very strict deadlines and penalty policy. Solid professor, but beware of exams, quizzes, and grading attitude.
Such a fun and interesting class, we learned all about relationships in romance, friendship, and families. The content itself is easy to learn, not a slacker class though you should definitely study for exams and attend lecture. Weekly quizzes and the 3 papers were easy. Taking one of his classes next quarter! Great CMN class!
Brunner is an amazing professor. Probably my favorite professor in the cmn department. His classes arent easy, you have to attend lectures, take good notes, read, and study a lot for his exams. But if you put in the effort you will easily get a good grade. His lectures are also very fun and interesting. I took 3 classes with him, liked 124 the best
One of my new favorite professors at Davis. He challenges his students while still being extremely supportive and accessible to give help during office hours. He fosters a very interactive classroom, and remembers most of his student's names. Office hours are awesome and he gives great feedback. Take his classes!!
Hands down my favorite professor I have ever taken throughout my time at Davis! Very important that you attend class, as he does not record or post lecture notes, but if you attend class and take good notes you are guaranteed an A/B in the class. Very interesting lectures, and he uses a lot of examples that make the content easy to follow.
Fascinating class with great lectures - attending is super important as lecture content takes up the majority of the tests and he does not record. Class is made up of 3 exams, 3 quizzes, and 3 short papers. He drops the 2 lowest quiz/paper scores and provides study guides for all exams. Easy to pass if you try!
This is the second class I've taken with Brunner. While I do like him and his classes overall, I feel like my main issue is that lecture is unnecessarily long (2 hours!) and you NEED to go to get a good grade. I feel like he could finish the lecture fast but repeats the same thing over and over and it's hard to pay attention after sometime.
Dr. Brunner is one of my favorite professors at UC Davis. I have taken all the classes he offers, as his lectures are entertaining and informative. You should be prepared to do the readings to get an A or B in the class. Dr. Brunner is very caring and is willing to help students who ask for guidance. Extra credit is typically offered via SONA.
Two midterms and one final, short weekly timed quizzes based on discussion material, and one paper. Homework was mostly reading studies/research papers. You will miss a LOT if you don't go to lecture bc the slides he provides don't have all the info/terms that you need to know. Lectures were interesting and he's pretty chill.
no recordings, three mc exams, six low stake assignments with two lowest grades dropped (three short papers + three mc quizzes). really great lectures but can be dense. dr brunner can be a little intense but cares about you doing well as long as you try. do the readings and start studying early!!! would def recommend :)
Honestly, the class was pretty easy if you go to class, write down any information he highlights in class, and study the readings using the study guides he provides. However, I find that he talks to students in a condescending way sometimes and has a discouraging/judgmental attitude. His personality made me dislike the class.
Prof makes class way harder than it needs to be. Exams are broken up into parts from research + textbook readings and lectures. Any niche detail can and will be used against you, which the prof clearly flexes in the syllabus. Prof does not post any content from lecture, so you will miss 90% of what you need to know to pass if you skip. BEWARE!!!!!!
He's a great professor but it's a class you need to put in the work for to get a good grade! Lecture/Discussion "optional" but he doesn't put everything on the slides he uploads (misleading IMO). Attend everything + do all the readings if you want an A. Papers seem easy but make sure you understand what he's asking. EC offered but no grade bumps.
Hands down my favorite professor at Davis. Dr. Brunner teaches his classes with such care and attention to detail, it really was very easy to do well as long as you take good notes. He lays out all information so clearly and explains everything so well. He is also a really nice person and very easy to communicate with. Take him!
best communication teacher here at davis. i took both 124 and 122 this quarter and was able to perform very well throughout the quarter. definitely need to set aside a lot of time to memorize the material but do not skip lecture otherwise you WILL perform very poorly on the exams!! 2hour class but very maintainable to get an A if you study!!
The lecture was great; he tried to make it very interesting. The course and discussion are not mandatory, but you definitely want to attend and take notes, and it will be on the test. He is caring, and I would recommend taking his class. The test might be tricky. you need to read the textbook! BUT it's fair. Love him, great prof
Doesn't record lectures despite recourses being available to do so. Argues that it encourages people to come to class witch is better for learning and that this is more important than providing recourses for review or accommodating people who get sick. Trick questions on exams and you have to remember the specific wording of names of theories.
Weekly easy quizzes, 3 papers he grades very tough, and 2 exams. The first exam average was a D- and our TA said that with everyone who watched lectures. The exams are very difficult even with watching lectures and reading the textbook. Great lecturer but it doesn't go far when the exams are that difficult and the questions are very specific.
Lectures were great and very engaging, class actually made me excited to go every time. Exams were tough but with enough studying, you can be fine, he also curves.
Doctor Brunner is your standard college professor, which is a good thing. Your workload is three tests, three one-page papers, and a weekly online quiz. If you do those, the readings, and show up to class you'll be fine. Just perfect and by the books professor which is not easy to come by nowadays.
Dr. Brunner is quite serious, but a helpful engaging professor.Attend his lectures, take good notes, and when studying for tests, I would reccommend coming up with an example for every single concept, theory, and term. It's about how you apply it. Dr. Brunner is also available for office hours, and is respectful to students with SDC accommodations
Prof takes a while to grade online exams because he reviews every person's test on honorlock. If you can avoid this class I would, seems to be very invasive to privacy.
Hard exams for a relatively easy class, not sure why he makes the exams so difficult.
This class was super interesting and Professor Brunner was an amazing, super clear lecturer. He was very thorough about the content and it was easy to understand. His tests are difficult, but he curves and there is SONA for extra credit. The readings are tough to understand but he gave clear study guides on exactly what to know for the exams.
Bro refuses to record lectures which is annoying. However, his midterms weren't that bad as people say. Perhaps he took feedback seriously because I was actually worried about a curve in a communications class. How does that make sense? A curve in communications? It's baby work!! Relax. Discussions were pretty fun I liked my TA. :)
Not a bad professor, but the exams can be challenging. A lot of reading in class and lecture is heavy. Just make sure you study because the exams can have very specific questions on them.
my two complaints is that he made the tests so unnecessarily hard, and he also reported almost half the class to OSSJA on our opinion papers that were graded weeks ago. He waited until grades were in and didn't even let us know that any essays were flagged by Turnitin, nor put any notes on our already GRADED papers.
I liked the energy of this teacher, and his examples in class were excellent. I don't understand the negative feedback this teacher has been getting. The exams were not hard if you attended class, took notes, and studied.
