He is very cool and always willing to help. He wants to make sure you understand.

I liked him a lot. He is very fun and very helpful
He is a very friendly, personable guy! I took him for a self-paced class, and he would always be happy to answer any of my questions during office hours or not. He is very cool, and everybody else I know who has taken him feels the same way.
Not a bad teacher, but very very hard. If you are planning to study math 24/7 take him you might get a good grade. If possible try to take an easier teacher.
If you have to take this class this teacher is your best option. He explains everthing so clear that you won't have problems in understanding the material.
Seemed easily confused and frustrated by the students lack of understanding the material. Nice guy though!
Very machine-like person. He tries to be funny with his jokes but he looks very idiotic and whole class just hysterically laugh at him. He tries to shows that he is very kind and open-heart person that in fact is not true. His lectures are very annoying!
He's a really good teacher, very helpful when you need help. His tests are very hard. His class is really good if you're a math major because it's a fun challenge. He's a very nice person.
Perfect if you really want to learn the material, and will help you all he can if you are willing, always available to answer questions any time, but very rigorous and challenging
He is the best math teacher that i've ever had. He is very helpful and friendly and explains the class material perfecly. Take any of his classes and you won't regret.
Very good professsor, clear and attentive to the needs of the students. His class is well organized and guarantees success in the class if work is done. Great person, recommended.
He is a very challenging professor. DO NOT TAKE THIS AS A SHORT TERM CLASS-unless you have a keen and natural afinity for math! He is fair, however he can be a little impatient w/a students inability to understand. Overall, he does try to explain the material in different ways to help conceptualize.
don't take him unless you are math major, gives per section about 30 problem plus about 40 online plus quizes on each section. Plus you can't return his book as you have to use cd code. So don't take him unless you willing to do 4-6 hw a day. He is explains everything well just crazy on hw.
Mr Castillo is extremely friendly and helpfull. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IN THE WINTER SESSION!!! He makes it a simple class by teaching very well BUT there is way too much homework. There isn't enough time in just four weeks to comple. Take it in a regular session and you'll do well.
Nice guy. Knows math better than any other professor I have taken. Always willing to help you. He does like to give homework. Be ready to do a lot, but come to class, take notes, do the homework, and you should be able to pass his class. The tests aren't too long, but sometimes the questions are.
This teacher provides us with everything and makes it more understandable and interesting. God I could just watch Spider-man. I didn't like very hard word problem exams. He was fair to curve all of us. I felt uncomfortable with exams.
he's a good teacher just do all your work all computer assighnment takes at least 6 hours a day to finish computer assighnment. lets you use 1 page notes for test, but don't have excuse caues he does not care all assightment on time.
Very flustered at times, and dosent make the greatest eye contact. There was no homework to turn in, but you sure did need to do it. Concepts became unclear sometimes only because he had a tendencey to speak really fast when he was nervous. Testd were painful, and poorly written.
Can someone say mental institution? It seems like he escaped from one. But smart guy, lots of homework, A LOT!!! Out of the book, then online, and quizes online too!!! Get ready to study statistics EVERYDAY!
Yeah he did have a lot of homework, online and from the book. He explains things well compared to most math teachers. All of his tests, except the final, he gives study guides which are the exact test. The final is mostly questions from previous tests. He also grades on a curve.
Beware! He is insane. well, what do you think about writing a diary every day and turning it in to him at the end of the semester, plus other 1000 things you need to do in this class, including computer assingments? there is an easier way to study math. i dropped him and took someone else.
Don't take him during the summer nor winter session! He goes by really fast, and cares more about finishing everything. There's hw every single day, and, you'd still have to do those online hw's,like every two weeks you have to turn in.I got a B, but believe me,more than half failed it or got a D.
VERY hard tests, too much h/w, and he goes really fast and cares more about if he's completed the section entirely than with the class' understanding of the materiel. Stay away from him unless math comes easy to you. If you have difficulties with math like I do, YOU WILL BE MISERABLE in his class.
Do not take him for winter or summer too much work! Very hard exams and he might give you a study guide but exams are 10 times more complex and different. Does not provide you with enough examples to understand the material. You have to memorize all formulas!! He's the Chair (Dept) so BEWARE!!
OK, to clarify: I took the "Self-Paced" version of this class, which entailed using Educo's crappy software. Try to *not* do this, because the software is buggy and crashy and will get in your way. Also the text used is very bad. From what I understand this will change. Prof. Castillo himself is great. Very nice, very helpful.
He's the man but if you love word problems take him. Gives you a 1-page sheet of a pre-test to prepare you for the real one; on the actual test, the format is the same but numbers are changed. When the whole class did horrible on the final he did something but more students failed; thank GOD I passed. You need 55% for a C.
GREAT TEACHER! One of the best teachers in LAVC. He is VERY helpful! Sometimes he goes fast but he covers every little thing the students need to learn from that class. He always gives study guides before the tests. Grades very well.
Statistics is a hard class!!!!! He is a very good teacher for this class. He explains very well all the lessons. He's very nice. In the five-week session he provided study sessions before exams and final also. You need to study hard because there are a lot of terminology in order to understand Statistics. You also so a lot of hw and comp assi
Castillo is a GREAT teacher but one who seems to forget we cant do everything he wants! I took him for the summer and had homework every night, a journal entry and about 11 hours a week for the online stuff! I think I got an A but I earned it! If you are NOT looking for a lot of work to do, I suggest you pick another instructor!
Excellent teacher, very knowledgeable. Doesn't even need to refer to book. Always explain clearly as well. Will ALWAYS help you if you have questions in or out of class. Cares about the students. ALso, his tests were VERY challenging and much harder than the book in my course.Perfect teacher for somebody very serious about actually learning math!
he gives you lots of work. dorky. goes over problems over and over until you understand it. his silly gestures made me laugh all the time. he's a whiz at math...hahaha...of course he's a professor. he's helpful. big final.make sure to do the HW. i never did one online journal but did all of the other work, managed to get a C. hard txt but good teach
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! VERY HARD AND EXPECTS U TO KNOW EVERYTHING!!! WANTS TO MOVE ON VERY QUICKLY..GIVES ALOT OF WORK...AND PLUS COMPUTER WORK...TESTS ARE VERY HARD NO ONE GETS AN A OR A B IN THE CLASS...LIKE I SAID DONT TAKE HIS CLASS...
bad teacher
if you want to fail the class then take this class with pro. Castillo.
funny but the lecture is way too looong
Best math teacher/ professor I've ever had in my life. There is no one more DEDICATED to making his students understand math and helping them. If you dont atleast get a B in this class you are either very lazy or very unprepared for this level of math. Either way it isnt in any way shape or form this great professors fault you got a bad grade.
hm he has sum weird funny comments..anyway he knows how to explain, but the class gets harder and harder, on my final i got few points because it does get so much harder as you go, try to have time for hw and being on the computer for the exercises and you might pass..i pass the class thanks to the computer exersises, you can choose your own gradin
He is a great professor. Yes, the exams are not easy and I agree with some other students that the class gets harder as semester goes, but you can pass it if you put effort doing homework and computer work. I passed with A but I worked my ass off and I end up loving math. He offers enough study sessions before the exam and studyguide helped as well
Great teacher! He knows how to make dumb students understand how to solve the problems. PC assignments are pain in the you-know-what, but other than that, it's a good class and I highly recommend him!
Do yourself a favor, STAY AWAY from this f***ing class. There is tons of homework from many sources and very hard tests. I got an A, but it was totally not worth the effort i had to put into this class. Trust me there are other classes out there and this one is not worth it. Dont take it for the love of god..
I have never had a more helpful professor. Class is not easy at all, but if you do the work, you can pass. Prof. Castillo generously gives his free time and conducts study sessions before each test and the final.
must take. HE'S THE BEST MATH TEACHER!!!very nice and helpful .easy to pull up grades by doing computer work. try to focus on studying the sample exams, 100% you will pass.
I learned alot from Dr. Castillo, he was a great influence and cares about his students. He was fun and his teaching skills were great. I learned alot from him. The computer work was tough and trying to get the homework done also was a challenge, but he taught me how to organize my time and I actually completed everything. Take his class and learn.
PROFESSOR CASTILLO WAS WAS AN EXCELLENT TEACHER THOUGH THE MATERIAL WAS SOMETIMES HARD TO GRASP. NONE THE LESS HE WAS VERY HELPFUL AND GAVE STUDENTS MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO GET THEIR GRADES UP. FOR THE MOST PART IF YOU AREN'T SERIOUS ABOUT SCHOOL AND MATH THEN THIS PROFESSOR ISN'T FOR YOU, BUT IF YOU ARE THEN GET READY FOR A CHALLENGE.
Good professor, concise but thorough explanations of homework problems. Some of his test questions seemed fairly difficult, though others came straight from the book (big bonus). The difficulty rating might be due to the fact this was a one month, accelerated class.
PROS: smart, willing to help as best he can, offers multiple grading standards to better fit individual needs. CONS: does not "teach," he just provides lecture notes which are already available online; impossible to follow/understand his notes while he scribbles them on the board at lightning speeds without ever saying anything; the list goes on
best math teacher eva! the only reason why other students doesn't like him and his class is because they are lazy. i really suck in math and i'm happy with my grade even thought it's not A. math for me is a nightmare but i managed to pass it because he's a good teacher. i really liked him.
very nice and I have nothing else to say.AMEN
very nice prof.and very helpful.cares about his students. must take.
Really nice guy, but moves really fast during lecture...read chapter before he lectures so you have an idea of what to expect...
As a person, he's a sweetheart. I have other issues with him: Chronically late, spent forever on easy chapters and then tried to cram in the last 4 chapters in a couple of mind-boggling weeks. Unprecedented amount of computer and written homework. If I'd known how bad the last 3 weeks of class were going to be, I'd have dropped the class.
I've learned a lot in his class. He's very helpful and nice too. However, some of his grading systems let you work your butt off, as what I just did.It felt like I was in a 5-unit class. But overall, you'll learn a lot. Most of the time he's late. And if you're not ready to take an exam, he'll give you another date to take it.
Great teacher cares about his students but you have to be ready to work. I highly recommend him.
Do not take this professor! Hard subject! He doesn't explain anything at all. He goes wayyy too fast! Too much, way too much, homework!
Alot of the material in this class is difficult but if you do all your homework and online work you'll be fine. He also provides many study sessions that are very helpful and his grading scale is great.
Very hard class but if you work hard as weel you'll get an A. Very nice person.
He is hard, actually way to hard for this class. He is crazy about hw.if you want 2 do good in this class u will have to do a lot of hw. Suggest that you look at other professors as they are much much easier then he is. This class should not be as hard as he makes. If you're math major then this is class for u, everyone else look elsewhere.
He is nice and helpful. funish
i DROPPED THIS CLASS I COULDNT TAKE IT ONLY WENT A FEW DAYS BUT IT WAS NUTS. 5 MIN. QUIZ EVERY BEGINING OF CLASS WITH 11 PROB. & U HAD TO WRITE THE QUESTION & THE DATA & EVERYTHING. IT WAS STUPID. NO BODY EVER FINISHED. CLASS OK I GUESS & IN A WAY EASY. ALSO BUY THE BOOK NEW. TRUST ME U NEED THE CD UNUSED OR ELSE YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY EXTRA TRUST ME
MR. CASTILLO IS A REALLY NICE GUY AND ALWAYS LETS YOU FINISH THE EXAM EVEN AFTER THE TIME IS UP. YES, THE MATERIAL IS HARD BECAUSE STATS IS HARD BUT SO IS AEVERY UPPER MATH CLASS. HE IS NOT PICKY ABOUT ATTENDANCE BUT TRY NOT TO MISS TOO MANY CLASSES BECAUSE YOU WILL MISS ALOT OF MATERIAL. IN THE END I GOT A B+ IN THE CLASS.
The SINGLE HARDEST CLASS I've ever taken! I had a 4.0 before I encountered him. Don't be deceived! He IS nice, but the class is IMPOSSIBLE. So much work you can't believe it. Most people got C's. Only TWO A's, & I wasn't one of them, even though I put in 15-20 a week studying!!!! WORST PROFESSOR @ VALLEY BY FAR!!! Seriously, stay away!!!!
vey helpfull
Final exam is the hardest. Prof. Castillo is the best teacher ever!! He is helpful-great in lectures, answers all questions. If you put in the online homework and textbook questions you will get a good grade. Mr. Castillo has inspired me in math - I do not hate math as much as I used to. He makes math fun and worthwhile.
He's very helpful and goes out of his way for you. I hate math but I still managed to get a good grade because he devoted so much time to helping us when he didn't have to at all. Super nice too.
Good teacher. His grading scale is SO loose that you would have to be an idiot not to pass.
Unless you are majoring in a field which has to do with a lot of math, do not take this class. This teacher goes way too fast. He does not explain everything with clarity. He keeps you until the last second of class. His homework is all online and takes forever to do. He offers extra credit which only adds about 5-10% to your grade.
a really nice teacher!! he's always there to answer your questions, he cares about his students. He gives sample exam before the actual exam also offers workshop for those like me who needs extra help.. he's awesome!!! HW of course!!!!remember practice makes perfect so if you wanna do well on his class better practice! thanks Mr. Castillo:)
Mr. Castillo was a good professor. He's willing and patient to answer questions, uses test that have the same exact type of problems as the homework, and writes Everything out on the board for easy note taking and comprehension. He does move as quickly as possible though so, don't miss more then one class in a row! Has a study session before tests.
This guy is helpful to the max.
Had him a while ago for Elementary Functions. There is no better Math teacher than this guy.
Awesome teacher. You will not realize it until you take your next math class. Excellent foundation for future classes. Very clear lectures, and he will answer any question and explain it until you get it. Highly recommended! "Any questions about that?"
He is very good prof,i am horrible at math, but he made kinda of easy for me. he is very nice and helpful.if you take his saturday classes, you get to eat free pizza and soda. great man
Prof Castillo is brilliant. He makes it possible for people who are not good at Math to learn the material and do well. He is always available to help students who need it. You need to go to class and practice the homework and you will do great! You can't find a better Math instructor.
Castillo is a very nice guy! always there to help. will answer a million times same question if need. make up for any test, just do the HW! great guy. kinda weird at times, but in a good way. if you suck at math, deff take this guy. he is very kind, very understand and exetremly helpful. I wish math dept. had more of these teachers.
Great Teacher!!!! He is very helpful and nice. This class could not get any better!
Awesome professor! He has a great sense of humor. He is very nice and is always willing to help. Easy class to pass as long as you do your written and internet homework. There is even extra credit opportunities online. Take good notes and you'll do well on the tests. Quizzes are based on homework, open book/notes.
I'm bitter because he doesn't have math 120 classes but i have had em for the past year and a half. Damn it! too bad he is not teaching 120
To say this class was intense, is an understatment but that was mostly due to the fact that it was a summer session class. I never opened the book but you need to be diligent about online HW & attending class. He is extremely helpful, patient and wants students to understand the material. I'm grateful to have had this truly dedicated professor!
Great teacher - the best. You have to do the work to learn the material and to do well on tests. He explains everything and will help you as much as you need. Lets you use cheat sheets for stats exams.
Extremely patient, answers every question you have. I personally really loved this proffesor his teaching skills are excellent his tests are veryy fair all you need to do is study. He offers plenty of ways to help you get an A you just need to study
He will give you the tools to succeed, you just have to be willing to work hard. He has review sessions which are necessary to do well on the tests. He will answer any questions and is extremely helpful. He is honestly one of the best professor's I've had at LAVC, and I wasn't so excited to take Stats but he is a very good teacher.
hes great!! hes very helpful, patient and flexible! he is easy going too. you do hw online - very convenient. and he goes over all the questions prior to an exam!! really great! i wish i coulda taken him for 125! take him!!
Prof. Castillo is very reasonable. He knows that not everyone loves math and most of us are just taking the class to meet a requirement. He is very patient and flexible and will answer as many questions as you need to understand the material. Easy grading scale, reviews for every test, lots of extra credit. He really wants you to suceed!
What a great professor! I was life or death to pass Intermediate Algebra last fall, but earned a B+ in Prof. Castillo's winter class. If you're willing to work, you'll do well. He reviews EVERY exam question, so you'll know exactly what to expect. Beware: be prepared for FIVE hour exams, no joke! But you're still the best Prof. Castillo!
OMG the best professor EVER. He is very patient and nice. Just go to class every day and u will be ok. The homeworks are online OR from the book. He gives you a review before the test, just study and u will do fine. I highly recommend him. Take him and you wont regret it.
I am not good at math, but I am passed his class with a B. I highly recommend him.
TAKE HIM, TAKE HIM, TAKE HIM. He is the best. The subject is not easy, but he makes it easy. Just go to class and you will be ok.
ok i don know who those people are who wote about this class before but be carfull what u get yourself into. if you want a teacher who is amazing and super smart and thinks that everyone is as smart as they are take this class. he does not go with the book or the onloine deal he has. he has his own method of doing thinsg. the final was like 4 hours
Prof. Castillo is the most caring/patient/easy-2-understand teacher ever! If U don't get it w/him - then U'r the problem! He provides test reviews, hmwk is optional (eitha online or book - u'r choice). He'll even do 1-on-1 tutoring if U ask. Goes above/beyond 4 his students! Simply the best! Wish there were more like him!
I love Mr.Castillo so much!!! I had never excelled in math the way I did when I was in his class. This man loves what he does, therefore he comes to class ready to teach and answer any questions. I recommend this teacher to EVERYONE... I was really sick for almost 3 weeks and he came to school on his days off just to tutor me alone! Hes amzing!!
Mr. Castillo is an Amazing Teacher. One of my classmmates had taken him for M.115; we were together taking M.125 w/Diff.Prof. MR. CASTILLO came to school on his time OFF just to tutor US..! HE HELPED US IMPROVE OUR GRADES. Thank YOU so much! HE LOVES MATH..!!! TLC
Mr Castillo Is So Amazing!! I have had him for 115, 125, and now 227 Statistics!!! He always makes himself available to help you if you are struggling, There is no reason not to get an A in any of his classes because he gives you all the tools you need to succeed!!! He LOVES what he does and thats why hes a wonderful teacher!!! You can retake tests
Prof Castillo is extremely nice and smart. He really knows his material. The problem with the class is that he thinks everyone knows math also! he'll do problems on the board and then expect you to know how he did it. Extremely nice guy, but extremely hard class.
Professor Castillo is really nice and helpful. He 's amazing at math. Boring lecturer. If you need help he's willing to help you. I love that he gives practice tests a week prior to test . If you study it and do the review you will get a good grade.Test is identical to practice test and only 25 questions. and you can retake your tests if needed.
highly recommended, he's a great professor knows what he's doing, gives you practice tests ahead of time that helps alot if you take the time to study them...gives extra credit which is always a plus in a math class, tests take time but if you studied then you should be fine...uses an online system, that gets annoying but managable.
He's a very lenient professor. Although one needs the textbook to understand the material that is being taught in class, the professor uses his own method, not the book. If you don't understand the assignments, he is more than welcome to help you out. But if you study the book and use the methods that are taught in the text, he'll mark you wrong.
Very nice man. His grading scale is EXTREMELY lenient. He lets you retake tests. Lots of hw so lots of opportunity for points. You have to be the laziest person on the planet not to pass his class. He really wants you to succeed.
The best professor ever! Thank you Mr. Castillo. Your the best!!!! Gives sample test, make ups, and plenty of extra credit.
It's almost impossible to fail especially with all the sample tests and extra credit he gives. It is a lot of work but he's very interested in seeing pass that he will even have one on sessions with you. It's also cool that you can retake tests to get a better grade. That's awesome! I hate math but at least he made it bearable.
Surprised how easy he seems for lower math, He sucks at teaching Pre cal! Its torture, his grading on test are ridiculous, takes off points for the dumbest things
Castillo knows what he's doing, but at times during lectures it seems that he assumes that every student also knows what he's doing. For Pre-calc, don't be shy about asking questions! He is quite strict on his grading of tests, but he curves the grades. expect... he allows test retakes and gives good test reviews, also expect lots of HW!
GREAT math teacher. will work with you until you get it. hard grader but lets you do retakes and makeups for all tests except the final. hw is online and quite simply just keep up with it. very helpful! take math with him. don't be afraid to ask questions bc sometimes he assumes that we speak the same math language as him.
Don't take Statistics with him unless you want to waste your money ($106), time, and life.I got all straight A's in my math classes up to pre-calculus but am still struggling. He uses many formulas in every chapter. He puts many proof problems that are Calculus 1 and 3 materials. Don't take his Statistics class.
Do not take this teacher for math 225 (stats). he never explains his lecture notes. He assumes everyone in the class knows every step in every problem and is not clear on the procedures. Tons of homework online that dont even correspond to "his" methods of doing the problems. cram's in sections after section. assigns class on days your not even in.
This teacher can't even keep up with himself, theres an EXTRA charge in this class that you have to pay, home work that only hurts your grade, a lot of info that you need to remember, he never answers questions accurately, tests are hard, and he never makes eye contact with anyone, if you have a question, speak loud, or else he won't even know.
What is everyon talking about! Prof Castillo is an amazing professor! He does EVERYTHING in order 4 students 2 succeed in his class! There r exam reviews, sample exams that r identical 2 exams, & he allows retakes! It's a hard class ESPECIALLY in winter, but he is an amazing prof and helps out a lot! Not everday u get such a professor as him!
He is just awesome! He tries to help as many people as he can! He is extremely the nicest professor I have ever had! His grading system is based on a curve, so there is no reason to complain! Study guides are given, and he always finds a way to help you! Lectures were clear, and understandable. I took it during winter session, and it wasn't bad!:)
Took his class for both math 115 and 125 passed both classes with an A. His exam reviews are super helpful, reviews are almost replicas of the exam. I preferred to do the online homework it helped me out more and i got to turn it in on Sunday compared to book work that was due on Thursday. since it is math do the hw and you will be fine!
he is the worst teacher i had in valley college.he is horrible grader, deduct points for every stupid mistake.his lecture is basically reading from the book.cannot draw graphs and thus everything that he explains is abstract.
I'm not sure that I got the best knowledge possible from his class but I did learn the material. He's an Ok teacher and he's lectures can be a little unclear but he's very helpful. He grades on a curve plus he lets you retake exams as many times as you need to! Also he isn't strict about deadlines as long as you do the work and hes a very nice guy.
Castillo was extremely hard to make sure all his students have the opportunity to pass. I really appreciated that he took the time to grade makeup tests. He would come in with stacks of tests and he would give you so much time to finish a test. if you didn't finish in class he would let you finish in his office. I am so glad I passed with an A.
Not a good statistics teacher. His lecture notes are very unclear. He reads his notation without explaining what it means. You can retake tests, but if he had a good teaching method there would be no need for everyone to do that. This class will consume all of your time and even if you try your hardest you might not pass because it is that confusing.
If you are a visual person, don't take him. He likes to just blurt out equations and not give examples. He also gives A LOT of homework like you will spend 3 hours a night working on it, BEWARE!
It's really a shame because he is THE NICEST TEACHER I have ever had but his Stat class is really hard. He does not follow the book equations or online equations. This, along with not laying out HIS EQUATIONS in a clear, organized manner creates a very CONFUSING & HARD class. Guess he thinks everyone is a Math Major.
I have heard a lot of positive things about this teacher, my bf took him for Trig & Cal BUT Stats HORRIBLE! I dropped this class because I just didnt get his methods and trust me 80% of the class felt the same way, always lost. If you have to take him don't take him for Stats TRUST ME!
Professor Castillo doesn't actually teach you how to do what's in the book and he has you working mostly online. The online portion is very confusing and it has a lot of bugs so it takes twice as long to complete. He is also very boring and he doesn't speak loud enough so lectures are horrible. Take this class with another professor.
This class was so confusing!! So much hw to do and he uses different method instead of the online hw.. very unclear
This guy thinks that students take only one class per semester and gives you a lot of homework. Homework enough for a 10 units class.
he is helpful but you barely understand his lessons he thinks students should already know the majority of the lesson he gives a ridiculous amount of h.w and like if we only have his class to study for
One of the best professors if you are not a fan of Math or Stats and just need to pass this class to move on to better things at the 4 year university. He helps you with any questions and lets you retake exam if needed.
Mr. Castillo might be nice as a person, but as a teacher he's just terrible. He reads his own notes during lecture. Barely uses the board to explain the exercises. I'm good at math and the subject was easy to me, but half of the class was completely lost. Make sure to do the online work, which is a lot! and the practice tests.
I've taken professor for several math classes. I took his Calculus 2 class and got an A but I spent about 3 hours everyday studying the material. There was a lot of homework but if you do it, you will be very prepared for the integration you will do in Calculus 3, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations. He is an amazing professor.
Absolutely the hardest math class or professor I have ever taken at LAVC. He was incredibly smart and nice just wasn't organized or prepared for a such a condensed semester. We were tested on material up to a chapers (4-6 sections). that we were not even taught. Homework was so much. At same time, he gives you the tools to pass and extra credit.
This combination class was extremely intense. It was Mon-Thurs class for three hours which took up a lot of your time. Theres lots of homework! 5 quizzes in total including a final for each class and its cumulative of everything. Professor is a tough grader but he's nice. To be honest wouldn't want to take again with this professor.
I took math 115125 with him, not gonna lie his exams can be extremely hard! You gotta practice if you wanna pass his exams. And what sucks is that he doesn't play when it comes to grading, so be careful with your answers. But overall, he's a great professor who's willing to help and is really nice. I aced both his classes due to hard work!
Very nice person. way to easy going. You ask for help he will go out of his way to help. though statistics is very different from algebra please do not take out your frustration and bully him. 2 take home exams, 2 in class exams. Extremely easy quiz's, fail 1st try because of laziness don't bother. online reviews, for study guide. CAN'T BE LAZY!
Nice professor, very intelligent and there for you if you need help but expects you to understand everything as well as he does. Homework galore, 4 very easy quizzes but 2 take home and 2 in class exams that are extremely difficult. I really dislike math and he didn't make it any easier on me. He's a very tough grader. He's great if you like math.
the best one
If you have a hard time in Math, Do not take this combo class but if you are go ahead. Mr. Castillo is a very good teacher and he does let you retake tests, but they are 4 different versions, so you might not get the same one. He gives a lot, lot of homework, so just take his class on no other. he uses Educosoft and it sucks!! Good Luck!
At first I was confused on why he wore the same exact thing everyday but soon enough I realized that this man really has a problem and can't teach a class for his life, do not take him for 115/125 or stats. He will seriously ruin your life. He blurs our random things in class like "oh you stupid" and makes weird comments and mumbles. TRUST ME
Example of why LACCD has 62% drop/fail rate. His expectations vs realtistic expecations make this class so hard. Ive come to find out, we went above and beyond any other Stats class from LAVC or Pierce. Everyone ws on verge of failing. He had to adjust grade scale 10% and didnt mater. So much HW no real time to Syudy.. Exams the heardest at LAVC.
Professor Castillo is an amazing math professor I ever had. I took math 227 which is not easy but professor Castillo is doing everything to help for understanding this subject. Especially I like his tests, there is no timing you can do your tests without stress and he gives a chance to retake the tests. I like his style and he is very helpful.
I took Mr. Castillo during the (shorter) Summer semester for my first attempt at college-level stats. It was hell. I dropped by day 4. As other reviews have said, he does mumble and say "oh you stupid" when he makes mistakes. He's definitely very intelligent, a good guy, and willing to help, but he is simply not a good teacher.
Professor Castillo is very good and amazing math professor. He is master of his job. I like his teaching style always gives stady Gide and you can retake the test.
Professor Castillo knows his stuff, he will do his best to make it clear to understand. I took this course over the winter session and found myself enjoying the pace of the class. Good luck!
I took this class during the winter. He's a brainiac. That being said- this was THE worst experience I've had, ever. Course-load was insane and the tests were difficult. Run your tutorial times and do the online homework as best you can. He tends to pass students based on time put into system. Pretty sure I should have failed. Never. EVER. Again
I felt an update in order. I have finished school at a UC school this semster, had to take up to linear algebra. This man had the hardest exams in the history of my math career. 4 math classes at UC and nothing compared to this guy.
got a C in both 115 and 125 but feel like i deserved at least a B. The amount of homework is insane but it does help. passable but VERY intense. lectures are long. grades on a basic scale. best part is that he lets retakes for tests but the score is then averaged with original.
Great class. good Professor. homework helps with studying. uses educosoft for homework.
Math was a real struggle for me. Taking his combo class was one of my best decisions. I recommend only taking this class if you decide to do combination. Castillo will give you every opportunity to pass the class, he let's you re take exams as many times as you want. His workload is a lot. If you put time into this class you can't not pass.
This is the second day taking this class, and as a person who cannot stand math, ive already completed all of the assignments for this week. Dont listen to the negative comments. There is a few assignments due each week, but i can already tell this is going to be the best class. Recommend!
Prof. Castillo is what you call, a National Treasure for the College Community. There has been few that define the quintessential meaning of "teacher." His aptitude for teaching is nothing short of a transcendental gift from a higher dimension. The lectures are clear, succinct, enlightening, and complete. He invokes the evolution of a genius mind.
Currently in this class, not even sure if I will be able to pass. I am trying my best, but as ive heard mostly everyones doing bad. He is not teaching us well; all he does is write problems and we write them down. Too much homework, & the tests are crazy. I am just praying to pass this class.
Catillo and teaching Math are very far from each other
Hes a really nice guy but his homework amount is insane. No time to study for tests because you gotta complete homework. Tests are hard and even though you can retake, its still not going to be the same test you took before. Trying my best to pass. Do not recommend this class.
Today was the last day of our second math final. All i can say is that this was such a hard class. I did not learn much until the very end, where i ended up retaking tests to bring up my grade. I learned everything on my own or searching up math stuff. I wouldnt recommend this class to someone that struggles with math like me. Hope i passed.
3 words. Just dont take. I literally gave my all this semester, and he still made me pass with a D. Too many assignments, tests are just insane, no time to study cause you have to complete the homework. & for some crazy reason, he decided to teach statistics towards the end of the semester. Save yourself the trouble and take someone else.
lectures are clear, you can retake exams, cool guy. Knows his profession inside out. also challenges you to be great. inspirational! Thus far my favorite professor.
He has good methods of instruction if he has enough time and does not fall behind. If he does fall behind, he will make you write his lecture notes as HW and skip the sections, but this is not something that he would do every week nor day. Get ready for HW and he uses every single minute he has in class, so if you get overwhelmed easily consider it
He is horrible person. He acts like he is nice and helpful but he is not. He is fake. Don't trust him at all. Always late from class and doesn't even care if you go to class or not. He doesn't lecture at all or do examples on the board. You have to do your own research in order to study. Wont recommend this professor at all.
Don't ever take with this professor because he doesn't explain anything in fact just writes the definitions on the projector and you have to copy them .
I took professor Castillo for two semesters in a raw, first one I passed easily with an A. Second one was the combination , I would say it was difficult, enormous work load, but if you the power of three: Perseverance, Persistence and Patience you can do it. Also , he will answer all your questions, with great patience.
He is a good professor and has a lot of patience! There was this lady in my class who would never understand anything and he would always go over things with her even tho she would get hostile. There is a pretty good amount of hw online but if you ask him he extends the deadline for you. He allows you to retake test but your scores depend on ur hw.
LECTURES Prof. Castillo is what you call, a National Treasure for the College Community. There has been few that define the quintessential meaning of "teacher." He's a great person and teacher, always available to answer you question, never ignore any questions or concerns Love it
I would definitely recommend Professor Castillo to anyone, he never give attitude to anyone when asking a question, he is very professional and understanding. He gives a lot of extra credit work and a super nice person. his class requires a lot of homework but allows a chance to retake a test if you do bad. I definitely recommend.
He is a very good professor; very patient. He never looked annoyed or mad when students had questions or when asked to repeat a certain part of the lecture if the student didn't understand it. (which is something a lot of teaches have done in my past math classes experience). He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities so its very helpful.
He is such an amazing teacher. He is very understanding, kind, and truly tries to teach you the material. He gives out a lot of extra credit and allows extensions. Attendance is very important because everything he teaches in class is on the exams. He is the best teacher i have ever had. And i really recommend him for any math class.
He really wants you to succeed, allowing you to retake exams & uses the best grade. His willingness to work with me ensured that I passed with an A. The online portion can do a lot to boost your grade. Open the tutorials and rack up those minutes! If you put in the work and show him, he will work with you to ensure you pass. Excellent professor!
Took him for Stats over the summer. For the most part his lectures were dull/dragging on and a lot of the material wasn't really relevant. However, exams were very fair and unlike other professors, practice exams were identical to actual exams, zero curveball questions and you will pass if you put in work in the class. Generous professor imo.
Great professor, he is really in love with math, always ready to help you with your "stupid" questions. You will be OK if you went to classes and did your homework
I like a lot of students, walked out of class after only 2 sessions with this "teacher". I use quotes around teacher because while he stood in front of the class he starred at the floor while hardly explaining the subject matter he wrote on the board. He spent days covering things that are not relevant to the class. Do yourself a favor stay away!
Amazed to see a rating higher than 2. Wasted the first two days of winter Linear, discussing Ring and Set theory, filled with formal logic notation, already assigning proofs, carelessly unaware of the class's total confusion. Dropped this for another Linear class, guess what we were learning? Basic matrix operations, like a NORMAL class. AVOID!!
I dont know who let him to teach Math270. He doesnt know the material, forces us to learn his 125 page (or more) homework with the stupid notation. He hasnt method to teach. I think he has to change the way of teaching ang grading criteria.
Believe me or not, this is the worst professor in the world. First time I took math class at Valley college and was truly surprised. Although professor is unknowledgeable, also is very tough grader. This is first time in my experience that half of class dropped it before the first test. Avoid to take a math class with this professor.
Do not repeat my mistake, do not take him. After spending 2 weeks I dropped the class. His lectures are meaningless. For preparation for the test you should learn his more than 400 page handouts solved by him. Any other solution will not pe accepted, even if it is right.
Really confusing professor! If you are looking for a teacher who will help you to understand easily, then do not take him. Takes the simplest concepts and makes really hard. I dropped the class after second test. He gives a lot of proves with signs and symbols on tests. Just avoid to take him!
If you get stuck w/ him take every word he says literally b/c he means it. He comes across as goofy but is dead serious & evil. Dont take him for advanced math courses. In 270, everyone got 45% or below on the tests b/c he wanted us to do it the 'GRADUATE' way. Didnt even teach that. he covered stuff that wasnt linear. Lectures all over the place.
God help us.
Never put reviews on this site before, but I'm doing it now to EMPHATICALLY IMPLORE ANYONE to avoid this professor. Describing him as difficult is in a sense true, but misleading; the real issue is that he evidently thinks this is a graduate level class and is thus entirely out of touch with his students or what it means to teach or design a course
Despite trying to save jobs at lavc b/c of AB705 he is still bad at teaching. I dont think anyone in my class understood what the heck he was talking about 1/2 the time. he did a lot of random stuff that wasnt even linear algebra & told me that I did my test the "graduate" way like what does that even mean? He is "nice" but a very lousy professor.
Just don't take him. I'm saving you time and energy. He expects you to actually complete EVERY single problem from each section of the chapters. I took the first exam and when I received it back, he did not give me points for problems that I had the CORRECT Answer for because in my work to solve the problem I left out an equal sign. I walked out...
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! I BEG OF YOU! HE IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER TAKEN IN MY ENTIRE COLLEGE CAREER! HE DOES NOT CARE, HE'S UN-ORGANIZED AND HE IS HORRIBLE AT TEACHING. THIS CLASS WAS A JOKE AND HE CLEARLY DOES NOT CARE IF HIS STUDENTS PASS OR FAIL. AVOID THIS CLASS OR ANY CLASS BY HIM AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!
I've been at Valley for 3 years now, and this was to be the final math class I had to take before transferring. I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, Castillo is the worst professor that I've yet encountered. Not enough to dissuade you? Try this. He assigns over 300 online questions, or over 150 questions from the book as homework per week.
Always late. Any questions on material will not be answered clearly. Syllabus not followed. Exams announced less than a week prior, sample exams posted the day/night before. One exam he neglected to post the answers to. Gave 5th exam on the last day of lecture (announced 2 days prior) when syllabus only listed 4. No regard for his students. DROP
His exam levels of difficulty are that of a masters level course. On top of that, he grades way too unpredictably and will give you little to no credit for no reason.
Insane amount of homework, literally hundreds of questions and within a short time limit. Hes really unorganized and gives very little help for exams. His sample exams are not very helpful and his first exam is insanely long. It took me over 3 hours to complete it. He offers no EC even though the final grade is largely test based. DO NOT RECOMMEND
Professor Castillo seems like a really nice guy, but his class is absolutely ridiculous. I had to drop to save my GPA! His assignments are insane. So. Many. Homework questions. His lectures are super long and confusing. And the tests are NOTHING like the sample tests. Only good thing is he's available after class and has a good attitude. BEWARE.
Nice guy but not the best at teaching material. Insanely large amounts of homework are assigned and the class moves extremely quickly, making the homework needed to do well on the test. I would strongly not recommend it, especially if you have any other responsibilities besides just school.
I couldn't understand him at all in Pre-cal I cant imagine taking him for Linear Algebra or any other Calc series that I'm finish up right now. This professor failed an entire class, but two students. Please do not waste your time and take a real professor, (Recommend Susan Vo for Calc Series or Sokolovoskiy for pre-calc).
RUN! Did not follow the syllabus-did things HIS way with little insight as to what to focus on for exams. The workbook purchased was not used, lectures were confusing and all over the place (check out his whiteboard, HA!), tests were misleading and differed from the practice exams and lectures. Worst professor I have ever taken. Heed my warning!
DiffyQ is saturated with many indispensable techniques that take time to master; however, Professor Castillo's lectures help develop a deep intuition for the subject. There're no curveballs as all lectures and tests closely follow the book. His lectures are easy to follow, and his notes are very concise. Individualized help is always available.
This class was incredibly difficult. I wouldn't take his class unless you are naturally good with math or something. I definitely learned a lot and his lectures are in depth but his test are incredibly difficult and they're the majority of your grade. Unless you're really confident in your math skills I would look at another prof.
Worst teacher Ive ever had.
Annoying clad that youll have to spend hours upon.
Save yourself time and take a different class with a different teacher
Worst teacher I have ever had. He was reported by multiple students but the system is always in favor of the teacher. Please just go with another Professor itll help you so much and save your mental health.
All I have to say is that Professor Castillo currently stands as one of the worst professors I have ever taken. Tests are very different from the assignments as this class literally drove me crazy. Started the class off with about 18-19 students and ended with 3 students. Please save yourself time and money and someone else.
I didn't listen to the reviews because I really wanted to get credit for the course, but really listen to the reviews before taking. As a summer course I get it moves very very fast paced but all I know it pain, burnout & tiredness from this course. Take if you're fully aware of what you're about to enter.
The worst professor I've ever had. Be ready to lose your social life, mental well-being, and sanity if you make the mistake of enrolling in any of his courses. Be prepared to spend 20+ hours on homework a week for him to give you partial credit on most of it. Be prepared to take over 12+ hours on exams he will try to screw you over on. DON'T TAKE!!
awful and stressful over 120 questions for each chapter, test was heavy and after the test u wait in zoom till he put you in a breakroom after a 30min wait and he will ask you questions about your work, will deduct points if you did not use his method in test which his methods are different than book so the BOOK AND SYLLABUS WAS USELESS.grades late
Please don't take him. His awful. First, all the homework and practice exams are nothing to do with test. Homework will take all your free time.
Homework was 5% of your total grade. Everything else was exams, midterm, final for the rest of the 95%. In the class group chat we all accepted we were gonna fail since the highest grade in the class was in the high twenties. If you care about passing, don't take this professor.
PLEASE DON'T TAKE HIM. He's the worst teacher that I ever had. Lectures are based on previous years. Can't teach. Exams are nothing to do with Lectures or homework. Tans of hw to do. Calc itself is a hard class but he makes it so much worse. Please if you have another choice take it, don't take him.
Really difficult class and he is a poor teacher, the only class I've had with 3+ hours of hw due each week. Out of 30 people there were less than 15 left after the first test and very few passed. He rushes through the last few entire chapters such as laplace transforms which he said wasn't that important.
Please do NOT take this professor. HW is every other odd problem for every single section in the book we learn, 20 questions for the first exam, and 10 questions for other exams, most being extremely long and meticulous to solve. There was only 3 people left in our SPRING semester (16 week) class and 2 of us got a C. Oh and EC is MORE HW.
DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He does not know how to teach even if his life depended on it. The way his class is structured is awful. The exams are unnecessary long and hard. He uses graduate level notation. He takes away points for anything especially if you don't use his methods but the answers were right. He does not give one care in the world
Castillo's class was hard, but 100% passable. The amount of HW is nuts, but it's only worth 5% of your grade, so spend your time studying for the exams (worth 95%). The exams will take you three hours to do. He gives great partial credit on your handwritten work in exams so write anything you can. Ask for extra time in the exams, he'll give it.
His lectures are nearly incomprehensible to most students seeing how he uses graduate-level notation that was never taught to most participants in any prior calculus courses. A great majority of students attained scores that were in the high 30s, due to the hw problems not being truly representative of the exams level of diff. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
His grading scale had test comprise almost your entire final grade (95%) Manner in which he grades assignments are very ambiguous, giving students extremely poor grades if he sees your work doesn't depict your solutions. Others frequently pulled all nighters and input hundreds of hours into studying to receive a measly score on exams. STRAY AWAY!!
What a guy
I usually disregard RMP because I think profs are often rated unfairly, but this professor is absolutely terrible. Incomprehensible lectures, 3+ hr long tests (not like sample exams), insane amounts of homework, graduate-level notation. DO NOT make my mistake and think he can't be as bad as the reviews say. Stay away to save your sanity.
Just take it with another professor; save both your time and money. I implore anybody to not take him unless you willing to get several failing exam grades, and lose countless hw points for unexplicable reasons.
Mathematics fits him like a made-to-measure suit. Unfortunately, it fits him and no one else like a made-to-measure suit. Here you will end up teaching yourself the material. A question on a seemingly simple problem will earn you a twenty-minute lecture. He will cram in exam material the day before the exam, and you must make him stop.
Tough class with a lenient grading scale to compensate. Boatloads of homework every week and exams can take upwards of 3 hours to complete. Several opportunities for extra credit and exam retakes except for the final. A stickler for showing your work but is very accommodating and fair. I failed because I fell behind a lot.
I dont write reviews for this one i Had to write STAY AWAY from that guy. Homework everyday and its only 5% of the course. Dont answer on time. Dont answer question regarding the gradding of your exam. Just STAY THERE ARE BETTER PROFESSORS.
This is the first revier I wrote stay away homework everyday just wortg 5% of overall grade. Dont reply on time question bout grading in the exam. Just stay away there are way better professors.
I've never written a review before, but this time I felt the need to. Listen to everyone else when they say the exams are LONG (4+ hours) and DIFFICULT! Homework is heavy and only 5% of your grade, but if you retake an exam (which many people did), he uses a formula that accounts for your homework average. Good luck but avoid if you can.
Absolute worst professor I've ever taken in my years of higher education. Grade is based on exams + final (each take 4/5+ HRS, for 10 complex questions that are and nothing like the txbk or his "guides".) Homework is worth an INCREDIBLY small percentage and that still takes hours to do. PLEASE listen to the comments and do not take his classes.
Stay clear. This is a genuine warning.
This professor should be fired he has gave a bs grade to multiple students and has not gotten any punishment for it. He will grade u on his opinion about u and not by ur work stay away
This professor has SA a student in the past
I had been waiting for the right moment to write a review on a professor, and this teacher fits into the criteria of being the worst Professor in LAVC. Insane amount of homework is provided, and the sum of all the homework is worth 5% of your grade. He takes off points for absolutely no reason from tests. Avoid him for your own mental health.
This class is pure hell, but the real nightmare is the professor. He explains nothing, ignores questions, and acts like we're idiots for not understanding his nonsense. The homework is designed to make you fail, the exams are impossible, and the lectures are pointless rambling. Avoid this class like the plague. -100/10. Worst Professor ever 🔥🔥
Castillo is one of like three calc teachers at Valley, so many ppl like me enrolled in his class for the convenient time. First day: he uses absolutely incomprehensible notation and rambles as if mumbling to himself. Dropped and switched into Vo (who wasn't much better). I don't know how he is still teaching.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. I'm a math tutor for a high school & I still found his lectures & lessons the hardest to understand. It was an online Saturday morning class from 8-1 and he only granted one 20min break all 5 hours. Never stopped rambling for all 5hr. made you turn on your camera and show room. Would never recommend.
His exams are IMPOSSIBLE. He has sample exams that have similar questions but he doesn't explain the steps he did in the problem so you can't even study off of it. It's not even the subject it's the teacher other calc 2 classes have much easier exams his are genuinely hard they're not based on the homework/book, classnotes, or lectures. STAY CLEAR
This class was the hardest ever, after exams he hosts a little interview and decides whether he thinks you know the material. Not only is there a lot of homework and assignments but he is a slow grader as well. So, the policy for exam retakes was kind of strange when he hadn't even graded the first exam and you were debating on retaking the third.
Never left a review on anyone until now. Hardest class Ive ever taken, not bc of the material but bc the professor. Insane homework and INSANELY difficult exams. Unless you do a problem EXACTLY how he wants, expect to get no credit for the question even if answer is correct. He also grades months late and never responds to emails. Please avoid him.
