He is nice teacher but a little confusing when explaning the material. His tests seems easier than they are. Take his class but study hard to do well. he also has tons of extra credithe gives + and - system
His tests have the most horrible scenarios! I learned a lot in the class, but testing was impossible! He does let you defend your answers, which helps, but it doesn't add much. Somehow I ended up with an A in the class, but it took a lot of work!
Dr. COllins is a great guy. He is passionate about what he teaches and he cares about his students. Yes, you should be willing to study and listen to his lectures, but he makes it easy with his sense of humor. I got a lot out of his class.
He knows a lot about what he teaches and isn't too boring. He gave us a lot of extra credit. tests are mostly scenarios, so don't just memorize stuff, you have to understand it.
dont waste time reading book, know your notes in and out. tests require you to apply logic. very interesting teacher, knows how to keep class involved
Really good teacher. Gave examples that made you able to understand the material. The exams can be tricky but once you understand his style, you'll end up with an A. Just go to class and take notes, you'll be fine. I would recommend this professor.
Really knows what he is talking about. If you need help he is always available. He will even come in on the weekends. This was a lot of work in the Grad level, but I truly learned a lot. Seriously understanding.
Good teacher, boring lectures, long powerpoints, easy tests, GO TO THE STUDY SESSION BEFORE THE TEST!!! He gives you the answers. Go to class and the study sessions and youll be fine!! I got an A
He is a character. Some of his lectures are very odd and unusual. Tests based on power points, lectures, and book (also segments seen in class). Always available for review to those who need it-highly suggested.
Dr. Collins is upbeat and kind of dorky but he engages you right from the beginning: "How you doin?" Anyway, go to class, take good notes, and attend the study session.
i struggled in this class in the beginning, but pulled up my grade at the end of the semester...he is very very helpful and will always go out of his way to help all of his students. he is pretty funny in his lectures and kept my attention...you will def. learn a lot from this guy!
Tests require you to apply logic, not just memorize. Pay attention in class. Stay for test reviews- he will tell you exactly what to study. You will learn lots about the communication field. He offers extra credit oppertunities.
Dr Collins is a great professor and his humor actually makes him attractive! He teaches you a lot about the topic and loves what he does. Definetly take this class!
Had to take this class for AD/PR and really enjoyed it. He's really funny and keeps your interest, just make sure you know your notes and you'll do great!
I 100 percent recommed you TAKE THIS CLASS as a grad student. He is extremely tough and this class requires WORK but if you do the work, pay attention and stay involved, it will pay off. I have learned more in this class then any other class I have ever taken, graduate or undergraduate.
very nice and funny. tests arent too bad. offers extra credit on all tests. sends out ppt notes. clear lecturer. easy to understand. i actually liked goin to class. have to study alot for tests. comprehensive final-lot of info
Tests are hard! You can do well on them, if you know the notes well. Tests consist of scenarios in which you must apply the information, so make sure you understand everything!! If you go to his office for help he acts like you are dumb and are wasting his time. Anyone who said he is cute is wrong!
His favorite quote is "How YOU doin'?" It gets on your nerves after the first month, but make sure you show up to class. Reading the book will help, but the tests are pulled straight from lecture. He offers reviews before every test, too, so make sure you go. Easy class if you make it that way.
How you doing? ;) Not a bad class, you have to pay attention in class and go to office hours for an a/b.
Very interesting material. However, your whole grade is based on exams which I feel are extremely hard for someone who is not considering law school. You must attend every class, take good notes, go to each test review, and visit his office hours to pass this class! Also the teacher tries too hard t
I was getting A's while my friends were getting F's. I read about half the chapters before tests than said the hell with it and went to his reviews. Ended up getting an A on every test i studied for. Drops lowest test so i didn't study for my last test and still got an 84%. May be easier if online..
Download slides AND take detailed notes and you won't have to read the book. Tests are all about applying the knowlegde. 3 tests (one dropped) and a cumulative final. Go to reveiws and he tells you what to study.
I had mostly B's on his test and then i started reading the book and made a 100 on the last test. do your self a favor and read the book. he takes questions straight out of the book that were not discussed in lecture. class was not to bad, go to reviews and read the book, i ended up with an A.
He is very enthuastic and knowledgable in this subject. He is ALWAYS willing to help! I would say that you need the book to know certain terms, but most importantly...GO TO HIS REVIEWS!!!
I am a hard worker & a straight A student. I must clarify for those who read the above reviews that Prof Collins is NOT good. The lectures would be ok if it wasn't for the continuous "umms" & "uhhs". His studdering makes the lectures difficult to understand & hard to focused on. Tests are kind of difficult. Learn to apply concepts & read the book.
To get an A in this class this is what you have to do: 1. Go to his lectures and write down all the examples that go with each slide 2. Read the book to better understand the concepts and know the bold words 3. GO TO HIS REVIEWS 4. Read the hypotheticals of every chapter and make sure you know how to answer them. Great class, I loved it! Good luck!
I liked this class. Lectures can be boring, but he tries to make it interesting. Do everything everybody else said, but also GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!! Once I did that my grades improved DRAMATICALLY and I ended up with an A. If you have a question, ASK, cause it will probably end up on the test.
Made the class way harder then it needed to be! Believes that every wants to be a Media person so they must learn it like the back of there hand, which stupid b/c most of us took the class out of neccessity. Slides are very vague and tests and VERY hard! Be careful taking him, you're in for A LOT of work and midnight studying.
VERY DIFFICULT. I bombed the first two tests and then seeked his help on the next two. I went to his office before every class to study one-on-one with him for the last two exams and I pulled a C in the class. He is willing to help and he's a nice guy, but the tests are very hard.
Collins is an extremely arrogant, stubborn and unapproachable professor. He attempts at coming out as someone who cares about students learning and future, but in the end he lives to make students lives as difficult as possible. A DICK!! It is sometimes mind boggling how incosistent his personality is and the logic he uses. Head this warning. Later

Collins' course was the most dissapointing I've taken at UCF. He is unclear, disrespectful, & doesn't make effort to assist learning. 6600 required TWICE the work of any other grad COM class, and fell apart when he tried to teach stats & methods. Very poor use of class time. You will only do well in this course if you happen to be omniscient.
Dr. Collins will challenge you, but he wants you to learn and he is a fair grader in the end. If you overlook his quirks and do the work you will learn a lot in his class.
Wow! Collins=worst instructor ever. Grades on work=no relation to grades received; stern w/ some; favorites get special consideration; took teaching style from "-the Apprentice;" couldn't get women students' names straight; and returned all work for all semester (save 1st 4 wks) on the last day of class, including midterm. Awful!
My writing has vastly improved. He is extremely challenging, not to mention he made me cry, but I know its tough love even if I do hate him sometimes. he can be a little harsh for a basic newsreporting class. This class requires hard work, and you HAVE to learn from your mistakes or you'll never make it. He offers rewrites and EC.
Collins is an idiot. He shouts, snarls, acts like a jerk and then turns around and acts like a friend. Be good to yourself. Avoid his classes.
Ok. Heres everything you need to know for MMC 4200. I see a lot of negative reviews here because of his personality. It doesn't matter if he is eccentric, because he is a GOOD teacher. If you go to every class, pay attention and read the book you will do fine. His lectures are interesting and engaging. Take your time on the tests, don't rush.
He's a good guy and this is the second time I've had him, but I'm grading him more on advising. He's really unsupportive in my decisions and I feel as thought he tries to mold into the journalism student HE wants, and not what I want. I just want more guidance and less negative feedback all the time. Otherwise, he's a good teacher, hard but good.

He's a good teacher. If you show up for class then its pretty hard to not get at least a C. He gives you all the notes you need and even offers extra credit assignments in class that take a minute or so to do... but you have to be there. I'd take him again
I think Dr. Collins is an amazing professor. His mind is definitely a lot faster than his mouth so sometimes it's hard to understand his point but if you sit down with him he will go to great lengths to help you out. Make flash cards, go to review sessions, and don't miss class. I got an A because i thought the class was so interesting.
This man is a horrible confusing teacher! Pray that another teacher may be teaching the courses he may be in. I had two classes with him and had to drop both and go around him to pass. He takes this job way too seriously. He is rude and does not take the time to help students in need. HORRIBLE!!!! avoid him!!!!!
He's a nut. His sense of humor is off the wall, but makes class more interesting. He's a little short on patience, but who isn't. There's no reason to avoid him that I can think of. I'd take another class from him. Word of caution: "Mass communication law" focuses on "mass communication," not on "law."
1. tries to be funny, but FAILS 2. NOT recommended to take over summer 3. fakes an interest in students 4. treats the class as if it was a 4000 level course 5. RUDE
To put it simply, he's horrible. I've had him for two classes and acheived A's. He's not a bad teacher but on a personal level he's horrible. He's discouraging and breathes negativity. I feel like I will never 100% please this man and he's sucked my love for journalism dry. I'll succeed with or without his approval.
He is egotistical, obnoxious and pretentious. Some people say he cares about his students.. No. He cares about what's coming out of his own mouth, and that's about it. Collins just isn't a very good teacher. If you ask him, he'll tell you he's the best teacher out there, but NOT QUITE. Don't take if you don't have to.
I did not enjoy taking Mass Communication Law. The exams are complicated and also very confusing. I ended up withdrawing from this class, and certainly was a lot harder than I thought it would be. This class is not mostly on "communication", it's actually equally based on "law", and I hate law.
I worked very hard in this class and miraculously earned an A. Collins is very tough on you, but you will become a better writer for it. This class is not for the faint of heart (read: shy/doesn't take criticism well), but if you have a love for journalism, you will leave this class a stronger writer and reporter.
He created such a hostile and negative environment and says himself that he is a jerk. He does know what he is talking about, but gives no positive feedback for your efforts. I completely changed my major because he made me realize I couldnt handle journalism or him.
He is hard to understand in his lectures. Very rude. His review sessions are pointless. He is not clear on explainations or examples. The textbook is verrrry hard to read. This is not a good professor for this class. This class could be 10x's better if he wasn't teaching it.
Like they say, he is tough and unclear on most every topic. The book is too in-depth and his tests are all concepts. STUDY and you might pass. He forgets half of the material he is supposed to teach. If there was another professor for this class, take them otherwise find a study group and TALK about the material and memorize or else you're screwed
I never used the book-only buy it if you think it'll help. Go to class, TAKE NOTES (don't just wait for the slides) and write down what each def is right then. Tests will be easier this way. Pay attention to the cases, why and who people were guilty. The class may be boring, but you'll be glad you learned what you did. If I got an A,anyone can.
Don't take any teachers with the last name "Collins" at UCF. For some reason they're all terrible!! Steve Collins is a drama-queen. I think he suffers from little-man complex, i.e. he tries to mentally bully students around and is generally rude to you if you're not a favorite. His jokes get old quick, I dropped his class and so should you!
An absolutely terrible experience. This professor is mean-spirited, sarcastic and hateful to his students. He doesn't grade things on time, and then blames his students for it. Paid little attention to his students because he was too busy working on paperwork for his tenure request. Grades via intimidation not care for the knowledge of his students
This teacher!!! he has to be one of the most different teachers I ever encountered. When it comes to class room lectures, its hard for him to get his point across. It's better to meet with him personally. the book is helpful. Better to meet up in groups. he gives X.C. TAKE ADVANTAGE. 3PTS does add UP.he takes forever to grade things! have patience
WARNING: He has no respect for students' concerns. He's demanding with the workload, but he can't ever seem to grade and returns things in a timely manner. He won't explain assignments clearly and gets frustrated when students ask him to clarify. When I went to him for help, he told me that I should consider something else, other than journalism.
Funny guy. Knows his stuff, really tries to explain thouroughly. Interesting class. But HE WILL NOT TAKE CRAP FROM STUDENTS. He has no patience for talkers, whiners, and rudeness in general. Act enthusiastic, interested, and grateful and you wont have any problems. DEFINITELY STUDY for the exams. Also he gives extra credit 2 classes after exams.
Yikes. I have never had an experience like this one. Although, this would make Collins smile ;). This class is pretty intense.Lectures really don't do any good. You have to read the book...memorize it. I guess this is a 'self taught class' What is the point of him standing up there anyway? I wish I would have taken it online with some other dude.
Utter disrespect for not only students, but most human beings. Big baby both in and out of class. Watch out for him, he likes to meddle in student's personal affairs. Good teacher in that he makes you learn by experience, bad teacher as far as ethical behavior.
I've read a bunch of the reviews and feel as though they do an injustice. Perhaps it's that I have a tougher sense of humor or that I appreciate oddity, but I thought I learned a lot from Collins. Note to all: keep cell phones away, he's serious about them. Other than that, just pay attention and work together with a friend, and you'll do fine.
While the subject matter is confusing at best, I found that if I kept up with the reading assignments and paid attention in class, I did well on the tests -- extra credit was icing on the cake. Does he have a weird sense of humor? Yep. Is he sometimes rude? Oh, yes. However, in regards to difficulty, I found the class only moderately hard.
Dr. Collins isn't a bad professor, he just expects his students to be willing to work for their grades. He seems to see JOU2100 as a weed out class, which it is. He's not the cuddling type, which isn't good for some people, and if it's not don't take him.
Collins' Mass Comm Law class is probably my favorite class I've taken at UCF so far. It's a lot of work, but if you read, go to class, and actually study you'll do fine. I think people that complain about him are probably just lazy. Don't go to class if you plan on talking through it. I thought his lectures were interesting and helpful.
I've read a number of the comments and they hit it right on the mark: good teacher, horrible attitude. He is rude and can not take it when a student questions him, which is what a good student should do. If I can help it, I will not be taking him again.
i don't get why everyone is complaining about Collins. He's funny, has pretty interesting lectures, and his tests aren't too bad. He gives a review for them anyway. You should go to class b/c he gives little quizzes he uses for attendance. Read the book, go to class, and study.. I got an A :)
Collins is tougher in his news reporting class than in comm law. He's pretty hard on articles but it's all worth it because you end up writing better. Comm law isn't that hard as long as you go to class and go to the reviews before the test. He's not very organized and it took awhile to get our papers back but overall he's a good prof.
I am taking his class now (mass comm) and I am having a extremely hard time understanding this dude. He studders and says "um" and "ah" a bunch, which breaks my concentration. And when he actually gets to the answer or point he is trying to make, i forget the reason for making it. Very difficult to understand. UGH.
By far the worse professor ever...the tests are unbearable...his questions are totally out of place...weird...I don't know.....
I don't what it is with Mass Comm Law teachers. Collins is fun but his tests are unbearable. I study at least 5 days in advance and still get D's on the tests. I know the book inside and out and his notes but his tests are so concept-heavy that it's so challenging. Between him and Voss, go with him. Either way you're not getting an A.
His is one of the most challenging classes I've ever had, the hardest I have worked to understand the material, but the most BENEFICIAL experience. Collins is a dedicated professor--his teaching method prepared me for a tough career. If ur looking for an easy A then don't get into journalism because the real world is 10 times harder than Collins.
His Mass Comm Law class is the most challenging course I've ever taken in college. This guy has stopped my straight A streak I've had the past 3 years. His tests are ridiculous. Every answer may work but only one is right. He thinks the class averaging a 72 on the second exam is good. He's truly absent minded. I have to use a grade forgiveness now.
Everything below is pretty much true however he offers several review session before each test which made me get the grade I did. He doesn't allow use of electronics like laptops but he lectures off powerpoint slides [not handed out]. Overall nice guy and is really funny but you must stay on top of reading. I work full time and I managed just fine.
Not as bad as people make him out to be. If you go to class and read the text book, which was made for a 1st grader, you'll be fine. Visit him in office hours, he is always willing to help. Great teacher, one of my favorite since starting Ad/PR.
Hardest class I have ever taken. Tests are impossible. I am an A student and the I couldn't manage to get a B on the first 3 exams. I ended up with a B+ after a week of studying for the final. Gives attendance quizzes and can be rude sometimes.
Worst. Professor. Ever. Collins' attitude can vary from pretentious to obnoxious to flat out rude. I don't think he has ever given a straight answer once. He will only give examples but no real definition of what anything is. He can take an interesting subject and make it painful. I never rated anybody before, do yourself a favor and avoid him.
Great Teacher. Need to do a lot of text reading and the tests are hard. Don't listen to anyone who is ranting about how hard he is. Test are hard but really managable and anyone who puts in a decent amount of work can get an A. I took him in summer and he was a great teacher who really makes the subject interesting with relatable examples. Take Hi
I had Collins in '05-06 for Beg. Reporting and Mass Comm Law. I thought he was excellent, but tough, in both classes, but he was awful for Converged Journalism, and I think he was subsequently removed from teaching that class; however, he has an awful way of degrading students, comes off pompous, and made me feel awful on several occasions.
Worst instructor that I have ever had. Complete disregard for student emails and basic communication. Too busy traveling or doing other things to complete his basic responsibilities. Tests are impossible. I am an A student and am earning nothing remotely close to that on his exams. Preaches liberal agenda. Impression is that he simply doesn't care.
Ive taken professor Collins before and knew this course was a gamble to take because it may be unnecessarily hard. I was right Also he was extremely slow with grading our essays which are already a little over the top for an elective course and extremely annoying when a teacher asks so much of you and doesnt have the decency to keep up with grading
I took Collins for International Media online. It wasn't hard, no book was assigned. He posted all the content himself. 3 tests (lowest is dropped), a quiz every week, and 2 easy 3 page papers. It just took him FOREVER to grade the papers and written part of the exams. Plus sometimes the modules were late being put up.
Not an easy class. EVERYTHING comes from the book, his lectures/notes are almost useless except for the final. He takes forever to return grades but is a pretty fair grader, for the most part. He's willing to negotiate with the class to help grades improve.
No texbook, everything was uploaded by him, but took long putting up modules and grading so you never truly know your grade until the end. Pretty easy class since he only tests on the module/supplementary information.
Collins is knowledgeable about the subject matter. However, it takes him FOREVER to grade because he has other interests. It takes him quite a few days to respond to ?s & if you challenge him in any way, don't expect a response at all. This class is a lot of work and it's all content he has created. Work hard if you want a decent grade!
Dr. Collins has mental gears that spin very rapidly, which makes him a fantastic professor so long as you're capable of keeping up. I was, and he's still one of my favorite professors. I recommend him if you have some self-respect and believe yourself a capable individual. If you're a layabout, maybe not.
Definitely need the book and definitely need to go to class. If you read and know how to APPLY the material, you'll do fine. This is not a regurgitation class; you have to actually understand the material.Subject is interesting, but I wouldn't advise taking it if you're not motivated to do well.
I have Collins for News Reporting. He is without a doubt the hardest grading professor I've ever had. I understand that journalism is a hard field but giving an F for one spelling error seems to be a bit much. I think I have a C or B in his class. I've learned a lot but I would have chosen a different professor if I had the chance...
My favorite professor this semester. Tests are challenging- you have to know the terms, laws, etc and be able to apply it to scenarios and cases. Classes are interesting and he's funny as hell. Slides are helpful but the book is necessary. GO TO CLASS, pay attention, engage, and you'll do great.
If you read the book and take good notes this class should not be to difficult. I didn't study a lot and got B's on every test. His test are scenario based but if you know the material they are pretty easy. He is a really interesting and funny guy. I throughly enjoyed the class. Just read and take good notes and you should do well
Vague. Vague. Vague. Scenario-based tests that require meticulous reading. Honestly, if you can avoid him, you should.
Collins bases your grade in this course from three 34 question tests in which you have 30 minutes to complete, making up 75% of your grade. The other 25% is from quizzes. There aren't essay papers anymore or leeway to encourage students to work harder (the lowest test score is not dropped). Prepare to answer vague scenario questions.
I love this class. It is not an easy A. You NEED the book to get a good grade, but you can pass without it. Read the stuff. If you know the material, the scenario based tests really aren't hard. I never got below a B on anything. As long as you read the book you really don't need to show up to class, but he's really funny so you should!
This was my favorite class this semester. As he says, this class can get Rated "R" real quick but it's hilarious. He used real life examples that we could relate to and his lectures really helped me understand the topic. I would definitely take another class with him.
So overall, this class wasn't bad. It was pretty interesting and I enjoyed learning most of the content, but I would not take this professor again. He's rude, and not helpful. I could never get into his office hours (he once shut the door on me because he said he wasn't taking any more students at this time) and his emails are vague.
I did not enjoy this class. Expect over 200 pages of notes plus videos for each test, and they are not easy to understand. I am a straight A student, and I was struggling in this course. The professor was not helpful in any way. I would not recommend this professor.
Prof. Collins is a great teacher. He definitely makes you work for your grade, but if you study you'll be fine. I got an A, but I worked for it, and studied with friends who also wanted to do well. His lectures are verbatim the tests, TAKE GOOD NOTES.
I took this course online during the Summer. You need the book to pass. There is alot of reading to be done, sometimes up to four chapters a week. Your grade is based on only quizzes and tests. Everything is multiple choice, however you have limited time for each test (ex.30 questions30 minutes) so make sure you take good notes!
Took online and it was the hardest online class I've had. I got a B- and I D on the final test. He gave some extra points as a curve but his test answers are really hard and situational. Take it in-class or with someone else. I was expecting an A but this is way harder than I anticipated.
Took this class in the Summer, online. There are modules & then there are quizzes for each one.( wvideos) The Tests are tough, & there is a good amount of stuff on the Tests that are not on the modules so the textbook is a must. You will not pass if you don't read BOTH the modules and text. Trying to reach him is a hard, did not respond at times
Dr. Collins is a GREAT professor! He is very helpful, very clear on what he's talking about. His lectures are so interesting and fun it doesn't even feel like you're learning, but when you leave, you know you learned a lot! He gives you 4 exams, but he will drop your lowest grade, you might not even have to take his final, because he'll drop it!
Even though he said read the book, majority of his exams come from the modules and lectures. His tests are all APPLIED, not cookie-cutter memorization. You have to know your stuff. Expect to study a lot. No homework except the quizzes which you get two attempts.
This class was very challenging, but I loved every lecture. His personality made the class interesting, but be prepared to take good notes and do the readings or else you won't pass. You have to be able to apply the material to different scenarios, so make sure you understand everything he's talking about. The modules help a lot.
Remember to read in order to pass the quizzes and tests. Aside from being discouraging and negative, his instructions are unorganized and vague and he takes too long to grade assignments. When he finally does grade them, instead of leaving detailed constructive criticism so students can learn from their mistakes, he just leaves a rude comment.
His modules are actually interesting, and you can tell that he really enjoys what he is teaching. Tests are open-note and ask really specific questions, but that isn't a problem if you at least go through the module to copy & paste. No textbook. He posts chapters that are really long, but I just skimmed through and it was fine.
Wouldn't recommend taking this class online. Too much content to cover for a 6-8 week course. Tests are compiled of lengthy, scenario based questions that require you to think, which would be fine if only he gave a sufficient amount of time to do so. Doesn't allow you to see your quiz answers to see what you got wrong.
He is very caring and nice! You DO have a lot of reading BUT he has GREAT powerpoints - read and study those thoroughly. They tell what's on the test but don't skip reading. If you do what he suggests, you'll do GREAT! He drops your worst quiz grade and tests are fair. I learned a lot from him and this course which was on-line! Very Rare! LIKED!
3 multiple choice exams plus final. HOWEVER they are very tricky. even he admits it because he wants to make us think, he says. there are several quizzes for each module, but you can never see the results, or study the questions again. a lot of questions based on scenarios that would be better if we can practice it. he wants people to fail.
He is a good professor dont get me wrong he just makes his tests more difficult than they need to be questions are worded very tricky and may cause you to overthink
The chapters from the book are LONG. however, he said only 30% of the tests are from the book. -.-' He didn't mention anything from the book in class, but for each test, he dug into the deepest part of the text book to get questions. Super tricky with all the questions! he tries to help by dropping the lowest grade. Don't buy/rent the book.
you guys have to remember this is a college class, its not going to be easy I took him for mass media law and yes you HAVE to study but honestly I LOVE HIM!! he is such a good professor, His textbook questions on tests are really hard and you really have to read I almost always got them wrong , but go to class and STUDY you'll do fine! :)TAKE HIM
Taken as my first JOU class and I considered changing my major. Interesting class but he is disrespectful and hard to please. Just be aware the class isn't easy anyway but any other professor may be less stress.
Really obnoxious projects like using Twitter (as if we don't already) and writing about what you learned on Storify (an awful word publishing site). Tedious work, easy stuff. He has very poor directions for projects. Doesn't really remind you when tests close. At least he has the courtesy of dropping some grades. Easy class but annoying as hell.
His tests are NOT applied knowledge whatsoever; all questions are small details from the readings that you would usually overlook. His projects are dull and tedious and he does not remind you of deadlines. He's also completely unreasonable.
I'm so glad this is the first and only time I've had Dr. Collins while at UCF. Unorganized, rude and doesn't give any feedback on the useless projects. I learned a fair amount, but the exams were focused on small details that didn't matter. It's pretty easy to get an A if you take good notes and study, but I hated every second of it.
I enjoyed his lectures! He has good methods for keeping people engaged and is good about answering as many questions as he can. My main complaint is there are items on his tests that are in the textbook, but not the lectures. He warns about that, but it's always hard to figure out what to study for the tests. But it's still possible to do well.
News Reporting was TOUGH but thats expected and its good that he is hard on you. Will make you question your career path but I pulled thru (half the class dropped or withdrew). OUTSIDE WRITING ASSIGNMENT ON DAY 1. 5 outside story assignments, optional 6th. Pop quizzes on current events. Used textbook twice so dont buy it just borrow it if you can
His media law class lectures were great, and does a good job at keeping lectures focused on important material/explaining topics. His exams were rough and structured in a way to trick you. Make sure you can dedicate 3-4 hours a week to hardcore studying, if you want an "A". If you don't read the book you won't get higher than a "C" on Unit Exams.
Professor Collins gives you all of the tools you need to succeed in this course. He reminds you of test dates, underlines facts in the readings that you should remember, and gives you helpful tips for passing the tests. Listen to him and do the work and youll see it in your grade. Theres A LOT of reading but its interesting and organized.
Avoid him if you can. Rude and brusque at best. His feedback is non-existent and his tests are borderline impossible unless you memorize the tiniest of details; his tests aren't applied knowledge but rather a test of rote memorization. The readings are interesting and there's a lot to be learned in this class, but not with his teaching style.
I highly recommend taking this course over the summer. I've heard its a very difficult class but over the summer it is shorter time frame and I think he condenses the material. The reading was not bad I'm glad I only had to deal with the class for 6 weeks. I got an A on all the quizzes and test.
I took this class online over the summer. The class was not hard. There are 3 tests and a quiz for every module. It was difficult to get an A, because you are only graded on tests and quizzes with the quizzes worth 25% and the three tests are 25% of your grade each. The test are tricky and there is a lot of info on them so study hard.
Collins is the toughest prof in UCF JOU but he helped me so much. From day 1 he told me I have the potential to be great. I'm a better journalist because of it. However, he is VERY strict when it comes to assignments. If you TRY he will love you and reward you. Write as many stories as you can and you'll survive. Laziness will kill your grade.
He knows what he's talking about, but he makes the class much, MUCH harder than it needs to be. He has "grade killers" which are simply just his pet peeves that will automatically earn you a failing grade if you make ONE. Collins called it "journalism boot camp" on the first day and many people dropped/withdrew early on.
Overall very tough Professor, strict and unapproachable
Collins is the rudest, most condescending prof I've ever encountered. He's VERY unapproachable even though he encourages visits during office hours. According to other students, Collins makes this course way more difficult than needed in comparison to other profs. I DO NOT recommend any NSC majors outside of JOU to take him in person. Stay. Away.
If you take Collins get ready to WORK. He is a great professor but you can't coast and expect a passing grade. You will need to work for an A, but he makes himself available. Go to his office hours and make an effort. He made me a better writer, but it was a lot of work. Don't avoid him because you are LAZY. He will change your life if you work.
Not the greatest professor and definitely not the friendliest, but it could have been worse. Tests are tough with questions that trick you, and they account for most of your grade. But his lectures werent too bad and they prepare you decently well for the tests.
I do feel bad for people who drop journalism as a major just because they took Collins first. His class is unnecessarily hard. Going to his office hours for feedback helps, but this class was like a second job. Just write as many articles as you can, but be prepared to end with a low C.
I thought this was one of those professors everyone called just called hard...I was wrong. This class is like a full-time job. There's so much information thrown at you and you're expected to remember it instantly. He needs to just get a textbook, scanned pictures of pages are hard to read and not professional. Condescending if you don't get 100s
After reading reviews, I was terrified to take this course. However, I read a review urging students to take this class online during summer and I cannot emphasize this enough! While there are some weeks where there are three quizzes a week, the quizzes are open note and as long as you go through the modules, you'll do fine! I loved this class!
I have been at UCF for my entire undergrad and now my second year into my master's degree. Dr. Collins is the rudest, most unprofessional teacher I have ever met in my career. He is very unapproachable, and will never take in any feedback regarding the class. He advises you to come to his office hours, but can you blame us if we don't? AVOID
I truly don't understand the bad ratings, he is a great prof. Make sure you go to lecture and take good notes, that is the basis of the tests. Quiz once or twice a week, some info is in the textbook. (I got a used one and it was the same thing as the new)
BEWARE of classes was labeled as "staff" instructor. I'm certain no one would pick this professor once reviews were read. Average "group" test score was a 7/8 AFTER two attempts. Tests were worse. Terminology with examples in textbook/modules were NOT usable on tests. He makes up his own questions that are vague and devoid of any cues.
Worst Professor I have ever took in my life I never write review but I have to for this one he is a horrible professor and super hard for no reason.
"Lots of homework," means this class is a job. If you don't treat it as such it will wreck you. Journalism is hard, and he reminds you. He isn't lenient, but he isn't unreasonable. He is demanding and expects good, solid work. If you give weak work, he won't take it easy on you. It's the hardest thing I've ever done but made me a much better writer
From the moment I watched Dr Collins' welcome video of him dancing Gangnam Style, I knew I was going to love this class. He sends out inspirational emails every week if you do well on tests. He updates the course if he sees people struggling and he's understanding. I enjoyed this class so much! Take notes, pay attention to modules, you'll be fine!
Prof. Collins tests/quizzes can be viewed as opinionated. If you like taking tests that in the instructions say multiple answers are correct but pick the best one then his this course is for you. Tons of reading each week, all to only have small detailed facts come up on the final. Expect a lot of reading each week and a quiz to follow.
Professor Collins is the toughest professor Ive had. His class consist of test & quizzes. You can use your notes, but they are hard. I would take him again if there were no other options, however if there was an easier professor I would prefer to take them instead. Hes a nice professor & very intelligent, but it is a tough class.
Collins was an amazing professor - he was always available, and never rude or distracted. He would respond quickly, precisely, and with a lot of detailed information. He really cared about hiss students passing, and 10/10 would recommend. The class was completely test based, and a LOT to read. If that's your learning style, don't hesitate.
I don't understand the negative feedback or the difficulty for this class. Everything is laid out. Dr. Collins is easily reachable and willing to help you succeed. I never once experienced rudeness from him and only more than usual contact with his students giving encouragement & being available for help. He is one of the few that does care.
Professor Collins was very helpful at communicating with students and making sure they understood the criteria. Tests were hard, but he would drop the lowest of your test scores. He does PowerPoint sessions. Take notes and ask questions, youll be okay
I was really enjoying this class until the first test came around. Professor spends a lot of time mentioning hes there to answer questions and set up meetings if you need the extra help, but is just plain rude if you attempt to get the extra help. Made it impossible to ask questions, he treats students like they should know the answers coming in.
He spends over half the semester talking about a project that didn't move my grade even though I got a high A. His tests are open note but the questions are so long and specific, you can't even use your notes if you want to finish in the time limit. You can only answer one at a time so I usually guessed on the last questions just to complete it.
When doing these reviews, it's important to separate the professor from the actual class. Advanced reporting is REALLY REALLY HARD. Everyone will tell you that. But if you go to Dr. Collins' office hours, he will literally tell you what he wants and how to get an A on the beat stories. It's the only reason i passed.
I took this class online. It was an absolutely abysmal experience. Even though I read all of the course material and video content, there were questions that he asked in the exams and quizzes that were just so convoluted and purposely confusing. If you need this class to graduate, may the odds ever be in your favor.
I have a quote from Professor Collins that changed my entire perspective about his class. The quote is this- "If you're not good enough, let somebody else tell you that, don't tell yourself that." I struggled earlier on in this class, but if you don't take his criticism personally and instead use it as motivation to improve, you can do well.
You have 1 min to answer the questions and they looks like a text. It's so long and if you need to re-read it, u won't make it. Is our life based in solving problems in 1 min?
There is another woman teaching this class, take her, otherwise, you will regret.
He as made it abundantly clear that he intentionally makes tests extremely difficult. He has a module explaining how he makes his work very hard because he cut corners when he was in school. Students shouldn't fear taking quizzes, and it feels like he makes it a goal to be discouraging. He's just awful and words quizzes in the trickiest way.
Tests are impossible. Studied all the material for days and still failed tests. Take someone else if you can.
Awful
I took MMC3200 online during Summer A. We had four module quizzes, a test review quiz, and a 50 question exam due every week & a half. As long as you read and watch all the module material, you will pass the class. Exams can be tricky because of the wording and time limit, but he does a great job giving feedback on overall class performance. 8/10.
I took this class for Summer A. As long as you actually read through the modules and take notes you will be able to do well. He gives plenty of information on how to do well on his assignments as well as what to expect for tests, even providing reviews. A very interesting and educational class.
Professor Collins has no organization nor points to his lectures. I dreaded going to his classes and felt I learned nothing no matter how hard I tried. I am a A/B student and his tests I couldn't break a C- on the exams. Overall I wouldn't take him ever again and cannot stand the way he teaches students.
Not horrible but not great either. Professor is decent but it's a difficult class. Collins makes the exams very hard to emphasize showing up for lectures & understanding material. The exams are worth 50%, with the final being worth 30%. AKA 80% of your grade is all exams. Attendance isn't mandatory for lectures, but you won't pass without going.
I regret taking this class. I could barely reach him outside of class, he would either take a week to respond or just not reply. EVERYTHING about this class is messy. I studied for each test heavily, followed his studyguides, and still never managed above a 60. Even the gradebook is messed up & "never reflects your actual grade" according to him.
Good person at heart. Always talks about his divorce. Not a really good teacher. If you take his class, read the modules. Go to lectures. His tests are insanely difficult. You could leave that room feeling sure that you get everything right and get a C. Very heavy on scenarios, heavy on SCOTUS cases. Don't answer questions, makes you feel stupid
This course was difficult but not impossible. You do have to study but the prof does care about your success. The more you pay attention in the beginning the easier it gets. There are Zoom reviews and study guides for tests. Everything is open notes so if you take good notes you're golden. Don't be intimidated by the syllabus or these reviews.
I took the summer term with Professor Collins, honestly his class was not bad. Because of a shorter semester we had like 3 quizzes per week, however it is not bad at all. The first module requires textbook reading however he provides the textbook pages so no need to spend money. I would definetely reccomend.
Collins is a okay professor, but he can be a bit harsh and sometimes even unprofessional when talking to his students. You'll notice it in his lectures even if you're taking him online. Make sure to study his lectures as that's how you'll be able to pass his class. I wouldn't choose to take him again unless he was the only choice, like this class.
