He doesn't know anything!!
Very liberal
great, enthusiastic, funny guy
Cook is opinionated--teaching is rocksolid. You can see minds opening in class.
Be ready for a lot of busy work!!!
In general he is a good guy, expects students to do work
biased in opinions but very fair with grades
He is a very nice guy, he talks like Kermit the frog.
Do the work, get an A. No thinking involved, he lays it out for you on the first day.
One of the few who made me think. Dr. Cook is very fair- you show up, listen, do the work, and you will pass the class with an A. Entertaining to listen to, although some may be put out by his strong opinions.
he was a really good teacher and i liked that he gave you a choice of droping 1 out of the 5 things, so i didnt take the final it was great. he is very helpful and gives lots of chances for extra credit!!!
I loved his personal stories.
What a joke class. Too liberal for me
No Comments
very good teacher! Lots of interesting topics that he gets everyone involved in.
Very liberal. His class lectures and readings are very one-sided. Leads people to see his views without presenting the other side of issues.
Very fair and interesting teacher. You can tell he really loves what he is doing. Just one tip, unless you love to argue in front of the entire class, don't read the paper.
He is definately one sided but he says that from the start. I learned alot of things from him but none of them do I practice. He is a dedicated teacher of a very f-n easy class.
Mr. Cook is full of brillant life-changing ideas. He opened my eyes. Many will find his biases too much to handle, but those are the ones driving the SUVs. Stop feeling guilty about being an American and change your life with his class!
Lots of work, but not difficult. Lets you pick a major thing to skip like the final or all quizes. Very clear teacher with strong opinion, though very fair. Overall a great teacher who loves his jod.
Great teacher - the best at OSU
He's a typical Oregonian. Never happy with anything that ever goes on in the state, country, world. So they made a class for it and had him teach it. If you don't like one sided information and bias, don't take his class. It's not a good class.
What an awesome guy! He loves taking his bike all over the world and isn't afraid to tell it how it is. He challenges your usual thoughts about the world and gives out tons of great info on how to be an environmental hero. :) RAD CLASS.
This has been the most profoundly interesting class I have ever taken. I learned mountains about the world around me, and about myself and my habits as well. EVERYONE should take this class.
Awesome teacher! There's a lot of info to choke down on the syllabus, but over all it's really easy if you put in the effort (which you will enjoy doing because the class material is so awesome) And to boot, he's a hell of a nice guy!!
Very liberal and dislikes any resource management. If you are willing to challenge him on his left liberal leanings though he will give you the chance. He seems to like a dissenting opinion. Respect him and he'll respect you back...not totally but some.
All and all, pretty lame. This truly believes in fairy tales. Easy A though, that is the only perk.
Really cool class. Will open your eyes to what is going on in the world, prof is well-traveled, so teaching is not just from a book. Liberal yes, truthful? you bet. Cool prof, interesting and painless class.
Mr. Cook is full of brillant life-changing ideas. He opened my eyes. Many will find his biases too much to handle, but those are the ones driving the SUVs. Stop feeling guilty about being an American and change your life with his class!
Awesome prof! He's very well informed and passionate... you learn more than just from a textbook! Some busy work, but interesting. Tests are very straightforward, lectures are very interesting and worth attending. He's definitely liberal (which appeals to me) but is interesting to hear at the least.
An eye-opener. The people who bash Cook are the ones who don't want to feel guilty about how much they waste our world away. Take this class and learn from a non mainstreamed opinion. Humorous, and a super nice, down to Earth guy. This all coming from someone that often disagreed with him.
If you voted for Bush, avoid this guy. Democrats go ahead and take this class. Basically his class is anti-everything that's practical. Example: logging, wiping with toilet paper, etc. A very biased point of veiw. Can't seem to back it up with credible knowledge. Waste of my day and money.
He's an idiot. He makes you read out of a book that is rediculous. Biased, dumb, and not very good at backing up what he says with facts. Everything is garbage. Don't take his class, it's lame. Especially if you're at all conservative.
Cook is not just biased, he's prejudiced against anyone who won't conform to his asinine ideologies. His class is a horrible waste of time. He claims to be well learned and well read; he's neither. Take this class if you love things that are irrelevant to life.
Way too much homework for a bac core class. I wrote as many papers in WR 214. I don't advise this class if you dislike busy work. Otherwise, it should be an easy A. Lots of extra credit available. Exams are abominable.
Why do you people who whine about Cook stay in his class? If it sucks so bad, then drop it and move on. He doesn't tolerate childish behavior and is interested that you actually learn something (unlike so many others).
What a lot of whining! He's clear and honest about his views and respects others' views. The "busy" work is all relevant to the class and to life. A great and valuable class, wonderful instructor.
if you think that a class called enviromental constervation is going to conform to your narrow conservative selfish values, think again.
Basically, if you have a problem with this course, you don't belong at a university. Cook is very well educated and does what he can to impart his knowledge upon others. Definately check your conservative values at the door and prepare to be educated.
One of the best classes I've taken at OSU. Cook is extremely interesting, smart, and witty. This class will make you rethink your life, so come with an open mind. There is some busy work, but it is all relevant, plus loads of extra credit allow you to skip things that suck.
Way to much busy work for a 3 credit bacc. core class. Interesting material though.
Much liberal propaganda and leftism. Wayy too much busy-work for a bacc core class
Great Professor who is very passionate about what he does and does not degrade students even when he doesn't agree. He does however, demand respect in his classroom so if you like to talk during lecture, think again. I learned more in that class than in many other OSU classes.
steve got rid of the busy work this term. now you just have to write 500 words each week. he cares a lot about people and has some interesting thoughts and concerns to share.
yes, he no longer has the rediculous amount of mindless busy work and the 11 page syllabus that went with it. Instead are short, thought intensive papers each week. The guy is an indespensible resource to OSU and anyone who has taken the class from steve and paid any attention is probably a better person for it. Highly recommended

Great Class
Cook is an extreamly liberal professor and makes no attempt to hide any of it. While I too am a liberal and beleive in preserving the environment, I was extreamly turned off by his continual rants about one thing or antother. The papers took no real effort and were nearly a complete waste of time.
Anyone wishing to know how students rated this course can go to the Geo 300 website: http://www.geo.oregonstate.edu/classes/geo300 and click on "Past Student Evaluations." These are from the most recent term that information is available.
class sucks
Not Helpful and Rude!
Cook is a very interesting teacher. He's really into what he teaches which make it fun to listen to him. The writing papers are pretty easy, i suggest everyone to go to the T.A often. You'll get a better grade on it. The quizes are super easy and the presentation was a breeze. Over all the class was easy and interesting.
most pointless class of all time . Has very little to do with anything that the class is actually about. Do not take this class for any reason.
Prof. Cook is teaching real, hard facts about our enviornment and the problems we all face on a global scale. Tons of extra credit and tells you exactly what he wants, do take this class!
Dr. Cook teaches with passion about sustainability. I found the class interesting and fun. The CT papers discourage students from taking this class. A shame really to think all those minds not elightened to the important info in the class because of fear of the papers.
Unless you are interested in global sustainability, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! The whole class is just used to serve his ego. Totally easy, but homework EVERY night, and a lot of extra work for a 3 credit class. What a blowhard...first day he'll tell you how much people like the class--mostly untrue. And he quotes himself next to Twain and Kennedy.
This class should be renamed Steve Cook 101. He shows pointless slides of himself on trips or of his garden and brags about how he breaks the law with his environmentally friendly water system. He is very liberal, and presents a very biased view of the subject. There's also homework everynight for a possible quiz, and the CT papers are ridiculous.
I loved this class. Steve Cook is a total rebel and he doesn't sugar coat his opinions. I happen to agree with him on most of the things that he taught about. It is true that he is very liberal but what do you expect from someone who teaches a class called Environmental Conservation and Sustainability.
I agree. He is idealogical with all of his lectures. He has a backhanded way of telling everyone he is morally superior to everyone. So what!
Interesting Class & Cook is a good guy! Lots of extra credit. No exams besides daily quizzes but there are papers instead. The papers are in a specific format so make sure you go and ask for help if you are having trouble. And make sure to do the extra credit, it will make that class a lot easier.
Why is he teaching? He's made it clear that he hates humanity, and is a hostile jerk! I had to drop his class because of his ridiculous CT papers and incredibly misanthropic attitudes. There is nothing positive I have to say about this professor. Maybe someday (one can hope) he'll become a hermit and leave the rest of us alone!
I LOVED this class, and LOVED Cook's teaching style. The class is EASY if you follow his instructions on the CT papers, and prepare for the quizzes! There are no ugly suprises, if you put in the work you get the grade. Cook brings together hundreds of sources to form a really accurate picture of sustainability today. I WISH HE WAS MY YODA!
Ideological, yes, but for good reason! This class should be mandatory. You learn so much important info to help make you a more conscientious citizen for the sake of the earth & humanity. Papers can be hard, he expects you to put a lot of thought into it. Readings are online & short, but you have to do them to answer daily (attendance) quizzes.
"I don't know what a Joule is." - Steve Cook, on energy efficiency. Quotes himself shamelessly, and doesn't fully comprehend the information he presents. Pointlessly high workload, especially the impossible CT papers. The assignment prompt said "follow the critical thinking guidelines exactly... we are adament". How can I take him seriously? B.S.
People who give Cook high reviews confuse subject and professor. Sustainability? Worth your time. Cook? No. Arrogant, thinks he's informed, and believes he can create a rubric for what thinking is. Read "Sustainability Without the Hot Air" and skip wasting time with Cook. You'll get the interesting subject matter without the sadistic fool.
His class is interesting, but he uses a lot of questionable sources. You will routinely hear him say, "I haven't looked this up" and "I'm not actually certain on this..." All quizzes are open notes. Put in the time and you will do well. Critical thinking papers are difficult. There are four of them. Tons of extra credit opportunities.
I think you need to be a certain type of person to like this class. He's very liberal and tries to make everyone the same way. Some of the readings or lectures might come offensive to most people.Your grade really depends on which TA you get. There is a chance to have a quiz in most classes but they are open note. Grades truly come from the paper.
Hilarious professor. Definitely full of himself but he has a lot of good things to say. You can tell his heart is in the right place. Class itself is a cakewalk, just show up and listen to him ramble for 3 hours a week, write your papers, and take notes. That's it.
Cook is cool for the most part but the work for the class is ridiculous. I did not take geo just to learn how to write a paper! I would not recommend this class at all!
Terrible, simply terrible. If you disagree with his worldview expect to be dismissed and punished. Readings are not balanced; they are definitely what I would define as "enviro-nazi" focused --- and I am a committed environmentalist. Take this course from someone else.
This instructor was incredibly insulting, arrogant, and belittling. Definitely would NOT recommend!!
I deeply care about sustainability and I would be considered an avid environmentalist but this instructor is such a jerk that you're pushed away from the subject.
Honestly it really was a very interesting and helpful class. The papers are BS but they are trying to fix it. You have a quiz every class but he gives you the sources the entire term before (on the class website). There is a ton of opportunities for extra credit.
This class is more indoctrination than education. Steve Cook regularly admits that he doesn't know basic facts about what he's teaching (especially when it comes to numbers and statistics), but makes up for it in smug self-righteousness about his green lifestyle. You'll be fine if you parrot his ideology instead of actually thinking.
Cook treats students like they are part of the problem and not the solution. He is passionate about sustainability, but seems to have little hope for our future. I don't blame him, but he shouldn't assume that we are all clueless and irresponsible. Four major papers are the bulk of your grade. A LOT of points are deducted for minor flaws.
In response to me asking for clarification on his project guidelines "Resend your email, and cut out all the crap and whining and complaining as if you were a high school freshman." I have never met an adult more immature or rude before. I don't know how he got a teaching position
Steve is honestly a good guy. I was unsure of his class towards the beginning but he's straight forward and is just trying to do good things. His sense of humor is quite entertaining and he's lived an interesting life. I am a B student who got an A in his class.
I would recommend every student from junior high school to the university be required to take this course, so that we have a chance to save this planet for the generations to come. We do not want to go the way of the dinosaurs. We CAN do something about what is happening to this planet from self-destruction.
name is on my scheduling but he never showed up. He always had his TA's teach and it was horribly disorganized. blazing fast lectures, quiz by hat routine poorly designed class setting structure via the fact that rooms alternated weeks. using recycled paper for assignments was encouraged but online submissions not allowed. 2 blackboards & a website
Professor is good, teaches some interesting stuff however he tends to take out a lot of points on the quizzes. Recitations are horrible, has nothing to do with class, the instructors are not helpful at all, they show no interesting in students success. We don't even need a recitation class if we're only meet once a month.
I cannot recommend against taking this class more. Grades depend solely on daily quizzes and three term papers. Each of the lectures proceeds at breakneck pace, and the quizzes will test your knowledge of the smallest, most insignificant details. The term papers have very stringent requirements-you will receive a zero if you don't precisely follow.
Steve is an amazing teacher. Reviews saying otherwise are probably generated by bitter, lazy students who couldn't follow simple instructions. Resources online for the class are great. Lecture is engaging and usually very entertaining. If you are interested in sustainability, want to learn more, and willing to earn your grade - take this class!
Basically, taking any of his classes is a COMPLETE waste of time. Simply an example of what happens when a doddering old man stays at work too long. He has nothing to contribute to students except a mean attitude, rude, confrontational reactions, and boring lectures about nothing. Hope you like pointless slide shows about his vacations!
Never in my life have I encountered a human who could share the superlatives of both environmentalist & narcissist. Honestly, the man should just give his exams about his personal life, because his history accounts for 12 or more of the course content.
Inflexible, hard quizzes, grades on format more than content.
This guy should have retired years ago. Terrible teacher. Overall, a complete waste of time.
This class is an exercise in white privilege, pushing for ecological changes that are economically not feasible. The instructor asks way too much out of students for just 3 credits. I have taken 400 level classes that require half the time commitment than this exercise in bs.
Steve is a good guy. People who complain about him are butt hurt on the fact that the man speaks his mind and the truth on controversial topics (global warming, energy usage, how Americans are spoiled) and that they don't agree. He requires a lot but only because he wants you to actually learn. Show up with a good attitude and you'll do fine.
Steve cares a lot about sustainability and in this class his opinion based on his experiences. I thought his class was great, and his lectures were interesting. The paper structure was intense, but the 60 points extra credit balances them out. Overall he cares a lot about the world and wants to share that with everyone.
If you take Dr. Cooks class expect to read A LOT. He is pretty intimidating, although he doesn't think so. He will gladly give you his opinion if he disagrees, and this class is all about how we are killing the Earth so get ready for some depressing lectures. No exams but there is 3 papers and daily quizzes. Easy to pass but wouldn't take it again
This class is great! If you are taking less than 12 credits. This pretentious hippy will eat up most all of your free time for the term with pointless service projects. The papers seem easy, but a well written one will be tossed out if it a single sentence too long. I never knew what fascism really meant until I took this class.
This course changed my life and the way I interact with the world around me. This man inspires me to keep climbing my mountain of challenges... Despite switchbacks... The destination is worth it and hope happens
This class was so amazing and inspirational! Steven Cook makes an incredible job to give us a wide view, sometimes pessimistic and sometimes more optimistic, about our world and the major environmental issues it's facing today. Yes, there is a lot of work (quiz, readings, papers) but it's the price to pay for whoever wants a good quality education.
I've heard the other teacher of this course is a lot better. I spent waaaay more time trying to please him via the ridiculous format requirements of his papers than I actually spent researching the topic. I was in a car accident and asked for an extension one time on one paper (explaining the situation) and nope. would not take his course again.
This class should be enjoyable, but it was not. There are daily pop quizzes based on preassigned readings. Woe to you if you did not memorize the exact details he decides to include in the quiz. There are also three papers with rigid rules used to automatically fail students if not followed exactly. This promotes anxiety, not learning.
Useless group project. Daily readings for a possible pop quiz (which is also your attendance). Three papers due that have such strict standards you will spend more time formatting than researching them. It is literally impossible to get an A on those papers. I got 84% and went to ask how to improve, and was told it was the highest grade allowed??
The class has a lot of work, but it isn't hard There are specific guidelines and expectation for papers, and if you follow them, you'll have no problem. He also gives numerous opportunities for extra credit. The content of the class makes it worth the work.
Some lectures were very boring. Take a different bac core class if you don't like reading TONS of content.
He is an awesome professor , besides the course materials, he actually, offer opportunities for students to access the communities, and experience differences of sustainability, how you can impact your home and community and health and get evolved with conservation,. To know what you can do, to be a positive factor in experiencing sustain 300
Great Professor, taught with a very old school like feel. Legitimately loved and was passionate about the subject, sustainability. Was easy to tell through his lectures that he is truly passionate about sustainability and that he lives everyday with sustainability and what he can do to make the world a better place. Gave a lot of Extra Credit.
He is a guilt monger, and I've never seen a professor more hateful of his students than he is. He once called campus security on a student because she refused to be kicked out of the class for using her phone. The classwork is questionable at best and highly politicized for no good reason. Doesn't use canvas, so it is really easy to miss a detail.
Because of how picky he was, I had to withdraw from the class. His critical thinking papers were worth a ton of points, and I spent hours working on mine, but because I didn't put page numbers in my citations, I got a zero. He makes you do a big group project and because I had to do one that took place on a thursday, I had to miss other classes.
Truly one of the best instructors I've had in my 4 years of university. Shame to see some many negative comments. Yes it's tough and he has his rules, especially the specifics when it comes to the CT papers. Most wont think its applicable to everyday life but the point is to get you to put in the work even if it may seem unnecessary.
You won't meet many people who care as much as he does. Strictest grading I have had at OSU, but I also learned the most.
Promotes writing papers to an unreasonable standard, or else you'll easily get a zero. The grade deductions are not for the content, but rather the silly criteria he has for them, like word count and formatting. Ridiculous group projects that require classes missed. But, miss one of his classes and risk missing up to three quizzes. Hypocrite prof!
If you do all the work, I feel like you are almost guaranteed an A. And there is a ton of extra credit opportunities. He seems gruff, but he really cares. Do not use your phone during class, he will kick you out.
