Good Instructor. Boring at times, but show up and stay awake and you will do well.
Had him for HIS 201 and 202. Definately a lecture class, but does show lots of videos. Has an easy test format if you study. Always take notes. You don't need to read the book.
Teaches with great detail. Keeps interest with great facts. Take good notes, and class could be very interesting. Looking forward to 202.
He makes history come alive with great quotes, unknown stories, and plenty of lies. Just take notes and his class will be entertaining and breezy!
that man may very well be crazy but hes a good teacher

May very well be insane, but is profoundly on task when it comes to the subject matter. Very quirky sense of humor, but is appreciated in the lulls of history. Tests are written narratives, and are easy to prepare for once you realize that.
After being out of school for ten years, it was nice to know that instructors of this quality existed. I don't think I would have remained in school had I ended up with a lesser instructor. He is very challenging, but fair.
Attend every day, take good notes, study before the test (which is a chronological narrative), and you can get an A with very little effort. He gives a good lecture, you don't need the text, and he is very professional.
Dr. Culbertson, seriously you need to retire! This guy is full of facts and he magically pulls them out of his thinking hat. Yes this man could be classified as insane but he still loves teaching. Make sure you take good notes and study in advance his test aren't easy. Majority fill in the blank and a couple of short essays.
Professor Culbertson is really devoted to teaching; he possesses a passion that few college professors have. He utilizes Google images to illustrate key figures and locations in history, and his goofy sense of humor lends to an always entertaining semester of lectures. As long as the student attends classes and takes notes, it's a great class.
Great guy. Eccentric, but also very funny. Very well versed in subject material, and is very organized. He makes history fun with his vast knowledge of useless stories. I definately recommend this man.
I've taken 3 classes with this guy and the experience is the same: terrifying tests and semester paper, LOTS of visuals via google, he is a bit intimidating when asking questions, and I'm sure everyone who has had him is still wondering how old he really is. Very knowledable, enjoyable, and interesting class. I learned a lot.
He is the best history teacher I have ever had. he is cool and taught me how to love history. He is tough but fair.
took two classes with this teacher and believe he means well and loves his job but i found he is eccentric to a fault and will go off on tangents not realated to subject his tests are very hard it was blind luck and sucking up that made me actually pass! not recommended
His eccentricity cannot be overstated, but it's a good sort of oddness. One of the few classes at this institution that I actually looked forward to. One caveat-he tends to make many sarcastic comments, but does so in a total deadpan-it takes a while to figure out when he's joking.
He is a great teacher. The smartest guy i've ever met.
GREAT teacher! so smart! I found him very entertaining. He marches to the beat of his own drum but i found it so humorous. Tests are super easy if you attend class and take notes. I recommend making notecards. I aced my tests. Lots to memorize but very clear.
Dr. Culbertson gives students the benefit of learning from a piece of living history. His passion for teaching is something that other professors would do well to emulate. He is excellent at keeping class upbeat and interesting. Take notes and review the notes specifically, attention to detail. I recommend taking any of his classes greatly.
One of the best teachers I have ever had and by far the best I have had in college. This guy is great. Like some others have said he is eccentric, uses alot of google images, and pulls random things out of his hat all the time but I think that is what makes this class great. I loved going to class and actually looked forward to it.
I don't know how so many people can hate on this guy. Yes, he has his opinions and his random comments can be quite strange and slightly annoying sometimes but I love his World Civilization classes. As long as you go to class and keep up with the notes you will do fine on the tests. The tests are all memorization and their in paragraph format and y
Dr. Culbertson is quite the character! His class was pretty boring(especially if you're not much into History), however, take notes and study hard for tests and you should have no problem passing the class! He is a little weird but in a fun way. He works with ya when you struggle. He likes to call the females his daughters and the males his sons=)
Great teacher, come to class(on time), take good notes, listen in class=good grade
He is a very nice guy, but can be slightly boring. He loves what he does, and it shows. His tests are a bit difficult, but if you study, you should do fine. Just don't be late and don't miss more than 6 days. Oh, and don't use your phone, ever!
I am a straight A student and currently have an A in this class but I would NOT recommend taking him as a teacher! He lectures the entire period and rambles on about a bunch of useless stuff. You don't have a chance to learn anything when you are only trying to memorize 5 chapters of Names and Wars for each of the 3 tests! It is time he retire!
He may be the cliche old professor, but he's the only history teacher I'd ever take at Owens. He's very nice and always willing to help you, the only issue that people in the class seem to have is that he sometimes gets sidetracked--which can be both a good and bad thing. But overall, he's a fabulous professor. Totally recommend him.
My favorite professor in my two years at Owens. As long as you show up to class every day and take notes you will ace the class. He is very very smart and witty and makes you laugh throughout each class. Very passionate about what he teaches. Takes interest in his students. Very good teacher.
Culbertson is an amazing teacher. I had him for both semesters of U.S. history. You have to know how to take notes and not just plan on copying stuff off the board. He was funny, understanding if you had to miss class, and a great teacher. I recommend him to anyone taking U.S. history.
Very good at tying in what was going on during the time period outside the course.Always brought in the arts, historical material Hitler speeches,Pacific warfare, etc. You got the whole picture of history time frame as well as the subject matter. Tests were given within the context of a story. Great teaching methods, connected with his audience.
Had three opportunities to one of his sons, and I'm not even a history major. Love this man. He is older than dirt, but In better shape than any of the very young students. I'm going to miss this man! Such a great teacher and person. He also teaches from memory!
I had Dr. Culberston for HIS 151 AND 152 and he is so quirky and funny, I love the man. If you are taking the class to actually learn history, then definitely read the book- you will not get much from his lectures. They are usually random things in history, and are covered very fast. Know how to take notes. Tests are easy if you take good notes.
Best teacher at owens ever. I take classes in his department just to hear him talk about history. The work is easy just take notes and pay attention which is easy to do with his subtle commedy and sarcastic remarks
TAKE NOTES. Thats all his tests are, never cracked the book once. Very helpful, awesome teacher
Best teacher I think I have ever had..words of avdice..#1 dont be late #2 dont talk in class #3 take notes #4 dont text in class..if you can follow those rules you will absorb so much you will be amazed..
He is a nice guy, but he is a bit ridiculous and set in his ways. He will keep you for the entire class time even if not necessary. His tests are difficult and are all essay. he gives 16 choices and you must pick ten and he words them I believe TRICKY on purpose. You can literally take out half the words he puts in the questions which just confuse
Really nice guy. I knew he was a history professor from the beginning, but Philosphy is not his best subject. The class was so hard to understand, and the test were extremely difficult. He is very eccentric, so it distracts you sometimes. By all means take him for History but not for Philosophy.
Amazing teacher. I've taken four of his classes so far and I'm taking WWII in the fall. He doesn't use the book but you can study from it. He is very easy going and very understanding. I'll be sad when he leaves.
Best professor I ever had. If you have an interest in History, his classes are a must.
Best Professor I have ever had. If you take good notes and study for the test, you will be fine. His semester papers are fairly simple. His subtle humor is hilarious. If he calls you his son, he loves you... Very interesting person to talk to
This man is dedicated. He teaches 7 different classes and started History of Women class in 1998. No power point used. All tests are essay. If you don't take the time to read the book front to back you won't pass. He loves teaching and it shines though.
Prof Culbertson is a one of a kind. Very experienced, organized, and thorough. Throughout the whole semester there were only 2 Journals due, a mid term exam, the final exam, and at the end of class there's always a paragraph you write in regards to a question he asks. Overall, excellent and influential professor. You'd be crazy not to take him.
The worst teacher, I would not recommend him to anyone ever! He thinks that school is the only responsibility you must have and does not care if you have family emergencies. He is not willing to work with you for any reason. I had a death in my immediate family and was told half way through the semester to drop the class if i had issues.
I took his class online and didnt even buy a book. I passed with flying colors! Absolutely loved him!
I LOVED THIS CLASS AND THE TEACHER. hE KNOWS THE BOOK INSIDE AND OUT, SO YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO READ, JUST SHOW UP ON TIME TAKE GOOD NOTES AND PARTICIPATE IN CLASS. AN EASY A !!!!
He is one of a kind. History may be my worst subject but he made it interesting. Would recommend for anyone who has a hard time with hist. Definitely taking his class next semester
This is a very... weird class. I really do no understand the importance of it and the instructor does not help matters any. He is very odd and grades things very hard. If you can avoid him I would suggest doing so
I am a sophomore in college and this was the first professor I have ever resented. He is not helpful with anything and doesn't keep the class interested. I wanted to drop him after the first class, he is strange. I go to class everyday and do all the daily writings, yet I feel that I have learned nothing. I highly recommend not taking him.
By far the worst teacher I have ever encountered. He is strange and not helpful. I recommend you do not take him.
Took him for Humanities 100. Very nice guy and I like him as a person but not so much as a Professor. I have found most of the things he writes on the board while going through the daily lectures to never be on the test, and his tests usually require you to use your book and identify specific images of figures in humanities. Will help if you ask.
Dr. Culbertson is the worst professor I have experienced. He reels you in at the beginning of the semester making his lectures seem logical and entertaining, but it all goes downhill after that. He rambles on and gets off topic and doesn't thoroughly explain the information. He treats philosophy like a history class. Awful professor. Avoid him!
This instructor is awesome has a weird sense of humor and also makes learning about History very interested. Tough to get an A, but if you want to learn about history this guy is the real deal.
Loved the class. Funny man, knows his material. He doesnt use a book or the internet, he just knows the material. Very helpful if you need a bit of extra guidance or criticism. I reccomend him to anyone that needs a history course. Education proffesors reccomend taking his classes just to see him teach. Called him a Role Model Teacher. I agree.
Worst Class I have ever taken
Test were not based on the lectures. Must read the textbook, that's where most of the information for the test came from. Strict grading. Dry humor.
Great class! He definitely makes you work for your grade. I wouldn't recommend missing class, you'll find yourself behind if you don't have a friend to take notes from. Very funny, helpful, and EXTREMELY knowledgeable in his field. His teaching style is different, but you'll find that you've remembered everything he's said!
I absolutely loved taking Dr. Culbertson's classes. I had him three semesters and I enjoyed every class. He has the most wonderful sense of humor. He will be the one professor from Owens that I'll miss. Anyone that loves history should take him, you won't regret it!
I really enjoyed the class and worked hard to get an A. As long as you take notes and pay attention in class and study for the test there's no way you can't get an A. Every week there is a "pop quiz" but they are simple if you are paying attention. I think his class was highly organized and he was a great professor who knows his material.
Probably the best instructor at Owens. He knows his material from memory, he teaches it well, he cares about students. If you put in the effort and do your work you will pass. He immediately was a role model for me and I have gone back to do interviews, ask questions and get criticism for 3 years after my last class, I took every class he taught.
This guy is the best! He was so funny and knows what he is doing. Class is organized and he goes out of his way to make sure you understand. If you are lazy or text in class he will get on you. He just cares and has a passion for his profession. Other professors recommend taking him all the time and I have only met like 1 guy who didn't like him.
This is my second class with Dr Culbertson and that's by choice. He's an extremely kinetic professor and is very engaging with subjects that to some seem dry and boring. He's spry for an older gent and talks of being a living piece of history and can speak from personal experience on many historical milestones. He's the most senior prof at Owens.
Culbs is my dude. He is a great guy with lots of experience, and he's always willing to help his students. **Disclaimer** You will only like this class if you have a sense of humor, or have joy in life.
I have taken two of his history classes and i LOVED them! he is not a easy A teacher so you will have to work for your grade but he is very helpful and makes the material very understandable. I highly recommend him for any class!
He comes off a little cooky but he's pretty funny and very knowledgeable. His philosophy class isn't hard if you show up and just pay attention. His tests are clear and to the point, no tricks. He's also very willing to help if you have any questions. He grades harder on his papers than on tests.
Dr. C is kind of an odd duck, but extremely funny. He definitely cares for his students and he goes above and beyond to help them succeed. He is willing to help in almost any circumstance and he makes class very interesting. Highly recommend. (Also, he has a Jordan shoe collection)
Fantastic professor! He's such a nice guy and is very knowledgeable. He teaches almost everything from memory so he really knows his stuff. He's got some corny humor but that just adds to his character and it makes you laugh sometimes. Will have to put in a little bit of effort but he is always willing to help. Highly recommend!!!
He's an odd duck for sure, tells a few too many corny jokes. But he's super knowledgeable, and as long as you pay attention and read your book you'll definitely do good in the class.
wonderfully funny, easy to understand. Don't miss class
Loved his class, took an extra elective from him that was not needed for my degree.
Great professor! Fair and tries to keep things interesting. I found his teaching style easy to follow. Show up to class! Friendly guy. I'm taking him again
I loved Dr. C, he's one of my favorite professors in college so far. His class he tried to make more interesting being a history class and it's actually incredible how mych he knows about history. He's passionate about it and makes it known to his students. If you don't like history and white board lectures with notes, he's not for you.
I really enjoyed his class. His teaching style was a blend of PBS documentaries and writing things on the whiteboard and talking about them. So if you're not into that, probably don't take his class.
Test are fill in the blank and they are hard.
Show up to every class and take his advice using flash cards. You MUST make sure you know everything he writes down and says in class because he's an open book to the test! If you miss a class every two weeks you will definitely pay for it on test day! As long as you communicate any issues early on he will do his best to help you!
Dr. Culbertson is a great professor! He really makes sure you know history! There are four tests, a course project and semi weekly DB. Tests are meant to show how much you know with fill in the blank and essay questions, but I have truly learned a lot this semester! If you don't mind working for a good grade, take his class. He is a great choice!
The only homework assigned is a weekly discussion post, a course project that is easy, and there's a couple tests! He wont schedule a post the same week of tests or the course project! He's a great professor and he gives you great feedback.
He waste a lot of the class time talking about him self. Two papers 5 pages each throughout the semester, assignment every other class open book, I wish I took it online. Two exams students can choose whether open book or not, but still so hard because he get a very specific questions that requires you to know so deep about the religion.
There are weekly discussion posts, which you need the book for. He's big on quoting from the book and also putting things into your own words, of course. The tests I found were very hard and gives you limited amount of time to answer 6-8 long extended response questions. You are graded on weekly discussion posts, tests (3), and the course project.
Dr. C was an absolutely amazing professor! He is funny and cares about the material and students. He describes everything in a way that makes it accessible and enjoyable to learn. Let him know if you have problems cause he wants to help. He gives you outlines so you only have to read certain sections of the book and tests were open book.
Professor Culberston didn't explain the assignments and was hard to please. We, students, had a conversation over email about how none of us could figure out what he was asking for.
He's a nice man, the course takes active participation, ask questions, and get help when needed! He's available
Dr. Steven Culbertson is a great teacher. The class was always pretty easy and he never was rude or disrespectful in any way. I was struggling in another class so my assignments were not the best in his class and he UNDERSTOOD my struggle and did not shame me. Great Professor 10/10
I took Dr. Culbertson's class 15 years ago before transferring to bowling green. Good to see he's still teaching. He has a great sense of humor.
Very funny person if you have a dry sense of humor. Loved his class! Knows his stuff from memory. Would take again!
This professor is brilliant and kind but 2 things you must know: The tests are 60 minutes and are 9 fill in the blank & EIGHT essay/written replies that often ask you to describe multiple people in one response. I type fast and nearly ran out of time for each test. He's a wonderful teacher; just do NOT use the internet and quote the text OFTEN.
A great phrase to describe this teacher is "my way or the highway." He could post an assignment, simply asking you "are oranges purple?", and if you don't take three paragraphs to explain exactly how and why oranges are, actually, orange, he will give you an F. All things must be done his way. Not worth the money or trouble, avoid at all costs.
Worst professor I've had. told a peer glad me and friend dropped the class. someone filled a notebook with notes in 6 weeks got an 85. very boring. have to write about religions. knew someone who wrote about one of them from info on internet and he gave them a 22/25. someone didn't use web and got 0/25. he hates the web. class harder than needed.
He is very heavy on not using A.I. He is very good at responding, but a con is there are weekly discussion boards due at 5:00 p.m. every Friday. Any assignment is due on Friday. I received a 2/5 on a discussion board because I did not write my quote write; giving someone a 40% on a discussion board for ending a quote wrong is a little harsh to me.
Dr. Culbertson is the best professor I've ever had. He is fair, supportive, and incredibly intelligent. If you pay attention, avoid using AI, and only use the provided material, you'll do fine in his class. I will emphasize, do not use AI, he can recite entire paragraphs of the book from memory so if you use an external source, or AI, he will know.
Dr. Culbertson is the best professor I have ever had. His grading is fair, and his instructions are crystal clear. If you use AI or sources from the web you will receive a 0. His knowledge of the material is absolutely astonishing. While his tests are difficult, the feedback he gives will guide you, and If you need more help, he is there.
As someone who gets good grades, I barely passed his course. I do not want to post any specific examples, but it felt like any time I would ask him something, he was off topic and wouldn't address what I was asking him about. His emails are confusing. If you take this course, I would say just take it in person instead of online. Seems better.
