Overall he's a great professor (with a pathological hate towards Abercombie) He's pretty funny and very helpful =]
Enjoyed his class. Very smart/sarcastic guy. Always keeps everyone involved in the disscussions so he makes it fun for all(even if you're shy). Gives a lot of work, but if you actually put in the effort you'll be fine!... HATES BAD GRAMMAR IN PAPERS.
EASIEST CLASS i've taken so far at Towson. HE gives a lot of work, like 60 second responses, but they are not hard. Do the reading and pay attention in class and you will pass the class with an A. Very funny guy, relates topics to everyday life, which makes it so much easier to understand the material.
Great teacher. I had this class at 8am and it was by far my favorite. He's a younger guy and keeps the lectures involved, up-beat, and interesting. You do need to keep up with the reading and work (many short papers and two longer ones), but they are not difficult assignments and he is a lenient grader.
I honestly did not like him as a person, and thought the class was gonna be a nightmare. And even with this belief i still did very well in his class. He makes sure you get a good grade in his class. He opens many opportunities for extra credit/ He wants you to pass, and will make sure you do. TAKE HIM
2 tests(midterm/final) 4 quizzes, 4 online responses,15 OPTIONAL (ex. cred.) Discussion Board Q's, 8-10 page research paper. Sounds overwhelming, but most of the content is very interesting.Kind of a tough grader, but can see reason.VERY interesting "lectures"(more of a class discussion) topics discussed are controversial=more interesting.Def. rec.
continuation of my last comment (read below). UPDATE: Although he makes the class extremely interesting, he also has a tendency to ignore e-mails. He may claim he "doesn't get a chance to check his email", but feel free to search "Steven Dashiell" on facebook, he updates his status multiple times a day. BTW this is finals week, and still no reply.
I was not a fan. His classes are less lecture and more discussion, which would be great if he did not dismiss and shoot down any thing you could possibly say. That being said there is not much work in the class until your "term paper" which is ridiculously long for a 101 class. Take him don't take him what do I care. I just recommend that you don't
This professor is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He is very serious about his subject for a introductory course. The work load is a little excessive and grading is a bit harsh. If you take this class, be sure to follow directions exactly. He isn't very good about returning emails. Overall too much work for a 100 level, Dont take him.
An alright teacher, can be very arrogant. I enjoyed a lot of the discussions in the class and found them interesting. While the work was not hard their was a lot of it and if you were not willing to do it don't expect him to give sympathy.I think he expects too much I would say take it if you are serious about the class. Don't think its an easy A.
I took this class over the summer, so my opinion may be different/irrelevant to you. But I thought that he was a nice teacher. Funny. Looks like Geoffrey from Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Tests (at least over the summer) are easy all you have to do is study vocabulary words. If you participate in class discussions its fun and will help you get an A =)
I took him last year for Sociology 101. Controversial topics help understanding as well as interest. To be completely honest, Professor Dashiell is the reason I chose Sociology as my major. If you want a BS easy A, not him. If you want a great class, and are willing to do the work. He's your guy. I'm looking forward to SOCI 243 with him over winter
Great teacher. Maybe a little to easy on grading but my only real issue with him was that he lets the class take over during lectures even if they are complete idiots. I felt like he taught less and let the class talk more than neccesary.
Best prof. I've had coming from a computer science major, very down to earth and related to current social times. lectures really hit home, and can be fun and interesting. There is alot of writing, but thats expected in college. Would def refer to students.
He enters class each night looking as though he'd rather be anywhere else, which he's expressed to be true, and usually starts speaking without any sort of acknowledgement of the class. He likes to shoot down your thoughts and often laughs at your input. Not terribly helpful outside of class.
Teacher expects way too much for this class. Sometimes he's all business and sometimes he's play but you never know when he's which. He can be a real jerk if you make a little mistake. There are other sociology teachers that are a lot better than him.
A lot of work for a 100 level class. Its not particularly hard but he is not very helpful either. He also talks about how great he is at answering e-mails but he never did which I think is extremely annoying. He also canceled class a bunch of times on super short notice which was annoying.
He is pretty much way too into sociology and thinks its the best thing to ever happen to the world. Sociology can be a really cool and interesting class but he makes everyything way to difficult. He never emails you back, and is not very helpful. Always seems to have to make things difficult just because. Dont take him.
He has a syllabus, but doesnt follow it. He is unorganized and extremely unclear. I have always been interested by SOCI, but he made it boring and annoying. For most assignments I never understood what was required of me to get an A. When anyone asked a question, it would throw him off so much that by the end there were no discussions only lectures
I don't really understand most of what people are saying. Prof. Dashiell is extremely intelligent and lively. He has a good balance between lecture and class discussion. Yes, there are times where the class goes off topic, but he always relates it back to the topic. I personally find him hilarious- he ppl who gave him bad ratings don't get his joke
Very helpful teacher. easy to understand doesn't give hard assignments just do what he says.... makes class very interesting and fun!!! enjoyed this class a lot! will take his class again very fun
Prof dashiell was truly an inspiration. Dont let his good looks and youthful appearance fool you. This man has accumulated decades if knowledge in his 30-some years, and with his ability to read 150 wpm, he's packing more in (often in form of his assignments)But knowledge alone doesn't make him great. He's determined to see his students evolve.
Took class summer 2011, 5 reflection responses (easy), 3 two page Reaction papers (easy), and 1 three page Observation paper (easy). Final that consist of 3 questions (must be able to elaborate on topics given) you can write 1 paragraph or 5 paragraphs. However, you must answer the question and explain in detail. Good Prof, good class.
I LOVE Prof. Dashiell. He seems intimidating at first but he's very funny. Only tests are a midterm and a final. 2 response papers- one on Jersey Shore and then a family oriented show. 4 page paper on people watching at Towson mall & a final paper on a group at TU. Class isn't mandatory. Not bad for an 8am, I'd take him again! :)
This professor is not in my top ten. He claims that the best way to get in touch with him is by email but he takes either days to respond or does not respond at all. If he responds he is not very helpful. He has also admitted to checking his facebook more than his email. As we speak I am still waiting for him to email me back. Never again!
He is intimidating, but don't keep that from taking his class. He is stict on things like font, and will make you scared of messing up. His assignments are very fair and understandable, and he has a great sense of humor, and class discussions are usually really interesting.
he is the worst teacher i've ever had. he made what seemed like a fun class, into a boring class. i honestly considered majoring in sociology, but now i don't anymore because of how much he made me hate the class. also, he is very bias. if you don't agree with him, then you're wrong. i found that very uncomfortable. he os just a horrible teacher
He's a cool teacher. He seems mean and scary at first but he's really not. Read in order to be prepared for your quizzes and do your papers and you'll be fine. A lot of people hate him but they are probably the ones who don't study or do their work and then get mad about their grades.
Class isn't that hard if you read the assigned works, which isn't much, and do the assignments. He will stress you out though telling you how hard the work and tests are, and how many people are doing bad. Also seems like a jerk most of the time.
SUCH A GOOD TEACHER! easy assignments if you work hard and a fair grader. definitely interested in what he talks about and keeps the class fun! do the assignments, pay attention in class, read what he tells you to read, and you will do great.
Class was very interesting and fun. He does require you read a lot of essays for each class (he said he was going to cut back next semester) but make sure you read to be able to participate in discussions. The class was very easy though, just do your work and you'll do fine. I'd definitely recommend him.
He is a really good teacher, make sure you do what you are suppose to do. Do not slack on his assignments, everything counts. When you first meet him he may seem unfriendly but as the semester goes on he is very kind and understanding. Take him!
I took his Sociology 101 class last semester and it was great, even though it was an 8 AM. You learn a lot and he keeps it interesting. You should go to every class because offers a lot of extra credit assignments and gives study guides before the midterms and finals. Great teacher, take him!
The teacher really knows what he is talking about. He makes it seem harder than it really is. Do all the assignments and you will get an A. If no one participates he starts taking attendance, so say things about the readings in class. He doesn't respond to email. Takes him forever to post grades.
I loved him as a professor. attendance was not mandatory but go. He says a lot of assignments in class so make sure you go. Though I had it at 8 am, it was the best 8 am i could have taken. He knows what he's talking about, and is willing to teach you it all. Read the book, it will help you and if you do the assignments and journals you'll be fine!
He bases his lectures on the powerpoint but also has his own definitions for some of the terms and adds in other terms that you need to know that aren't on there or in your textbook. So it's important to come to every class. Most assignments are due online (10 journals, 3 mini papers, 1 observation assignment). He makes class really fun! Take him!
He makes the class super fun and will keep you awake if you're ever close to falling asleep in his class. Attendance is mandatory because he will grade you based on whether or not you show up to class. I loved him and would definitely take him again!
He takes attendance every day and his tests are easy. He assigns random assignments for the next class, free points for people who came to class.
The professor is very intimidating at first, but wants all students to try their best. He engages the class and tries to make it interesting for a three hour class. Just try your best, be on time, and participate and you will be fine!
Awesome teacher, made me think, interesting, fun class.
He makes the materials easy to relate to. He asks questions that make everyone think similarly and differently, which was good. I'd definitely take his class again.
There are no such thing as stupid question. Why would you even ask that? How did you..? In his mind, no stupid questions, just stupid people. I know youre not smiling in my class, theres no reason for you to be smiling. You are disrupting my class. Then he spends 10min explaining how THE STUDENT was the one disrupting class.
Only 2 exams. Lots of reading and notes. Online discussion posts due every week. 2 easy observation based papers, and one research paper. He's nice but can be a little intimidating. MUST READ YOUR TEXT BOOK AND ATTEND CLASS to get good grades on tests.
Prof Dashiell can have a negative demeanor and come off as cocky. He does expect for you to participate and that will forever help your grade. Do not be late and whatever you do do not use your phone in his class. OMG he will embarrass you almost every time. Never mind I paid for the class and can use if my phone if I want,
I had this as a night class, but I loved it. The class was long, but he made it really interesting. Prof Dashiell may seem kinda rude, but he's really the sarcastic funny type. Try to read as much as you can. Don't procrastinate on the big questions or case studies. Take notes and participate. Make sure you don't don't don't use your phone in class
rudest professor i've had at towson. really doesn't care about helping his students, especially if you don't agree with his opinions and views. A LOT of reading and analyzing. would never take this professor again.
This was my second time taking Dashiell. While many may say that he's "rude" literally all you have to do is not be on your phone, or doing other stuff on your laptop. I turned my phone off every class. Participate and pay attention and you'll pass the course. 2 exams, 2 papers, reading, and discussion posts. He really knows what he's talking about
Definitely go to class, and never have your phone out. Professor Dashiell loves to call people out for using phones, or not reading the chapters. One of the rudest people I have ever met, He was not a nice at all. Had to work very hard for my grade.
He's a very nice teacher, and sometimes very sarcastic. Overall the course is pretty easy, read the textbook and you'll be fine. Class is usually him going over powerpoints but the lecture is very interactive
As far as his class goes, it's pretty straightforward and if you ALWAYS read you will be fine. Is it a joy to be in his class though? No! He's rude and cold hearted. Don't bother going to him for help because he'll just look at you funny and say "I don't know what you want me to do?" So in conclusion, fairly easy class with a fairly crabby teacher
He might come off as rude, but he's very sarcastic. He cares for his students and tries to help them out. He does call out people who aren't properly using their devices and calls out the class if the majority hasn't read the last chapter(s). You will have one to two chapters a week to read. He's pretty clear with his grading criteria.
Overall he is a good professor. He has expects you to participate in the class and to do the readings. He can get a little upset at times if people don't do the readings or disrupt the class. His grading isn't to harsh he makes the guidelines for his assignments pretty clear. Class is mostly discussion based.
Eh. I have mixed feelings about this professor and his class. The concept of the class, the material, and the videos were all enlightening BUT the Professor's demeanor and arrogance ruined it for me. It's hard to enjoy the material when it's being taught like that. Stickler on attendance, cell phones, food, bathroom breaks, etc. Great material tho
Interesting class, and lectures were good. His attitude kind of ruined it at times, but he got better throughout the semester. Just dont use your phone or disrupt him and tou will be fine. Tests arent that difficult if you read the chapters, 6 page paper on any topic of the course. Offers extra credit opportunities. Easy class to get at least B
DONT BE ON YOUR PHONE! As long as you participate and take notes on the slides you will be fine! Some say he is rude but I think he is really funny and makes his lectures interesting, you also do a lot of talking and participating.
This professor was the most arrogant teacher I've ever had in all my years of schooling. He called people out for "distracting" the class when they were doing something as simple as zoning out for a couple of seconds. This professor was a straight bully and I spent so much time trying not to get yelled at that I couldn't even focus on the class.
Professor Dashiell is definitely harsh with people that he feels don't care. By the end of the semester, he kinda picked is group of favorites and won't call them out as much as others. DO NOT BE ON YOUR PHONE or TALK DURING CLASS seriously it's the most nerve racking thing when he stops class and calls you out. Not a bad teacher tho. Read the text
Just do yourself a favor, and stay away from Dashiell. If there are other professors teaching the same class, take them instead. I love sociology, but he treats the students like they are lesser, and is overall rude to most students. He doesn't check his email until the end of the semester, and takes very long to post grades.
He really is not as bad as the reviews make him out to be. He was intimidating for the first few weeks of class but he is a very fair and great professor. Everything is easy to understand assignments are straightforward. There are disscussions that you have to write every week but they are so easy that you can write them an hour before they are due
Barely any lecture PowerPoints on the class site, he grades the discussions worth 10 points like they are a final paper. He could care less about u as a student or individual. The guy sucks.. thats all I have to say.
One of the smartest people I have ever met & helps you gain knowledge about things that are actually important. He is very intimidating at first but lightens up as the semester goes on. He's passionate about the material covered & I left the class a smarter, more well-rounded person. If you try, you will learn a lot about race class and gender.
He made it seem like his class is going to be extremely tough, but I soon realize if you put in enough effort to understand the material you will do fine. I almost fumbled the bag by thinking the class was going to be too hard. His knowledge of the material keeps you engaged. He also has great personality. Grade was low but i was able to pull C
If you are looking for a supportive professor, skip this one. The one opportunity professors had the chance to show support was during COVID-19. Was not supportive during COVID, beginning of the year he bashed other professors, but once COVID-19 happened, he was very unorganized. Didn't post grades, mixed up due dates. Very confusing and rude man.
I wish I could rate him as a 0. Before COVID-19, he was rude and harsh about attendance and electronics. Now, with everything going on, he didn't care AT ALL about students during the pandemic. Very rarely replied to emails. VERY high expectations. Do NOT take him, he won't help you or care about your success. People like him shouldn't teach.
One of the most sarcastic and arrogant men I've ever met in my life. He definitely put a bad taste in my mouth for all sociology courses. He takes the intimidating approach to take control of his class which doesn't phase me, but don't be offended by his shenanigans. He was very unorganized during the pandemic and unavailable. Interesting Course.
I feel like Professor Dashiell spreads himself too thin and the students suffer from it. There's no reason a professor should be completely unavailable while students and the rest of the world are struggling during the pandemic. He requires so much out of his students for a 200 level course and it's ridiculous. If there's another option, take them.
This professor is a very tough grader. The exams and weekly big questions are difficult only because he is looking for very specific things and you won't get a 100 otherwise. I feel I participate a good amount but he has given me a C- for participation which is 35 points in the grade. Very rude and hard. DO not recommend at all.
Shouldn't even be a professor. He lectures all class and doesn't stop to take a break. Whenever he asks a question and calls on people to answer, he often embarrasses them or tells them they're wrong and then reiterates what they just said but in different words. He also NEVER responds to email and is very unprofessional about helping out students
Does not post lectures. Have to be in class for the information. Very monotone and doesnt use cameras and gets aggravated easily when the technology doesnt work on your end and his. Only take him if youre passionate with the topic.
Dr. Dashiell is a very good professor. His instructions for assignments are very transparent. Therefore, if you follow his specific instructions and read the textbook you should have NO problems in this course. I really enjoyed his class and he emboldened my understanding for sociology.
You can tell Dr. Dashiell really cares about the material and puts time into what you'll cover. Something really cool about him that you can always feel safe/not judged when he holds class discussions/debates. As long as you try to take notes and do the work, you will pass. I would take him again if I needed more SOCL classes, but I do not.
Mr. Dashiell is NOT an easy professor for a level 243 class. He gives lots of homework and is very lecture heavy. There are pop quizzes (but he really gives them every other week without telling you). However, his exams are easy and he is very educated on the subject he teaches. I joined a study group and that helped a lot. BE PREPARED TO READ!!!
Its only week 3 and this prof is just ridiculous. He does not know how to talk to people and is rude. This is a very interesting class/topic but this professor is ruining it for me with his arrogance. He thinks he knows everything and if your answer is not aligned with his he will say its wrong when it is the correct answer.
Don't take this professor. Save your mental health.
I do not recommend taking any class with Professor Dashiell. He seems to have no regard for his students and is very strict. One mistake and you are on his bad side. He acts like he is above and better than his students and will make you feel like you know nothing.
Imagine a 45-hour documentary about how furries spend their time, written and narrated by Judith Butler. His soc. of pop culture is about like that. Only there isn't any sociology. Leave your sociology at home. That's pretentious. He's not here to theorize; he's here to tell you about men who disguise themselves as small colorful horses.
He's smart and he is sure to tell you that he is. Condescending and constantly talks down to people blames entire class for failing exams when he doesn't have a basic teaching style that allows us to learn the content no help whatsoever doesn't respond to emails
I was anxious to take his class from the reviews. His course requires EFFORT. If your the type of student that doesn't study, test well or show up to class don't take him. I didn't read one chapter, just pay attention in lectures and you'll pass. He has a fun personality but can be overly sarcastic sometimes which some people misinterpret.
He is a tough grader, the way he speaks feels like he's being disrespectful or smart. He does not have any care or respect for your personal matters. He feels like he is the only important person in your life and he must be put first over everything. He calls people out in class. Just an all-around terrible experience 0/10 wouldn't recommend.
This class requires a lot of studying and participation. Be prepared to discuss the readings and TAKE LOTS OF NOTES. I recommend flashcards to remember terms for exams but pay attention to the examples he gives in his lectures. Do not rely on his slides b/c he doesn't always post them. He seems intimidating, but his instructions are very clear.
He views his students as enemies. If you ask him something that he already said and has to repeat himself he gets hostile, but refuses to post slides online so you have to take notes while he speaks. His slides also are entire paragraphs long, literally the opposite of how high schoolers are taught to do. Proudly doesn't care about reviews of him.
If you don't participate in class discussions there's a very high chance of getting a 0 for participation which is a total of 40 points. During review, I was putting a pen back in my bag and he stopped the review and called me out assuming the review wasn't important enough to me. 1/3 of the class failed the first exam and it was somehow our fault.
Worst professor I've had at Towson. Huge ego and very rude when you ask him to go back on a slide. He calls people out and won't curve no matter how many people fail. Says your answer is wrong and then says the same thing just a different way. Very reading heavy and make sure to study. Just don't take him, literally anyone else. Steer clear
So much homework for a 200 level class. As well as over 100 pages of reading a week. This guy does not care about his students and their success but rather teaching like he is still in the marines or whatever he did. Avoid him if you can. You'll live with so much less regret. Also he's only good for reciting the textbook so thats just awesome!
Despite his doctorate and focus on topics like ableism and mental health, is condescending and rude toward students. Unforgiving when you miss class/struggle &dismisses misunderstandings harshly. Response to poor exam grades implies students are unintelligent. His approach fails to acknowledge his role in creating a supportive learning environment.
This class is most definitely a hard class. If you are a student that doesn't study or show up to class you will fail. Also, if you aren't paying attention to his lectures, he will call you out. If you do the homework, readings, and take notes during lectures you should be fine in the class.
