He's a great teacher that gets you to think outside the box. If your an ESL student try another teacher...he's an advanced instructor that has lots to give to the right type of students. He's great!
He didn't explain any assigments to the class. He just kinda threw the work at us and said "Ok do this" the in class assignments and reading were so boring i wanted to sleep throughout his whole class ... he drug on and on and had his favorite students ... 1 girl in particular was never in class, yet recieved an A ... i was in every class but 1 and he gave me a D ...
Very rude. He favors certain girls if your young, hot and blonde. But for us guys or middle age people he is rude to. Basically assumes you should know it. he cancels a lot of his classes and you dont really learn much. He wonders why he's not full time
As with any required class, you're there because you have to be, not because you want to. Steve picks up on student's interest in writing and will help push them to succeed. Complaints on his style are more than likely from people who didn't want to be in an english 101 class in the first place, although his 101 class should have been a 102 because it did focus more on critical thinking than comp.

In class it was a lot of fun with all the class discussions. We would talk about the weirdest things. He grades kinda hard on papers but over all it was a pretty easy class. I didn't learn much. All you have to do is show up and put some effort in your papers and you'll pass. Most of the stuff he writes on the papers can't be read it's so sloppy.
Excellent instructor. Provided written, clear descriptions of assignments. If you wanted to do well, all you had to do was ask. He was readily available. to help those who wanted it, so I guess he favors students (in spite of gender) who want to improve. Take his class if you love to write or want to improve your writing. Hope he teaches 102.
Doesn't teach very much. If you understand the subject well you'll get an a but if you have trouble with it you'll fail. He has favorite students and those students are the only ones he remembers names of.
only sat in on one of his classes but his syllibus says that you shouldn't take his class if youare easily offended. He said that he will use profanity and have sexual disscussions and other questionable topics.
I think this teacher is very mean and rude. He grades too hard and doesnt give enough time to finish assignments. Estus also has favorites, very mean teacher i wouldnt take him again.
Terrible teacher. I never got more than a C on any single paper. he is very unfair and at times extremely offensive.
Estus was great. He was at times offensive, as he warned in the beginning of class, but most professors are. To be honest he doesn't teach very much about writing, he just tells you how it should be, and you need to figure out how to do it.
Awesome. . .best teacher ever!
I dropped this class, first of all I went in early first day and there were not enough desks for everyone. I was already annoyed being crammed and having to share my book with someone who didnt even buy one. Then I worked extremely hard and he wouldnt accept my paper because it had two staples instead of one.
Tough grading, but he was extremely helpful.
I think he was awesome! I actually learned something from him! a little tough but nothing to the extreme, I really enjoyed the class. (WAY BETTER than the English 102 professor I had!!)
He is ridiculous.
Horrible teacher, useless as all get out! Stay away!
If you want to fail, pick this professor.
anybody who says that he's too hard is either lazy or a complete idiot. i enjoyed his class...especially the group discussions. An A is not hard to get if you actually pay attention and do what you're suppost to. I would definetly suggest Estus over the other fools that teach at crafton hills... don't be afraid to actually learn something
Estus is a cynical, soulless creep. People with similar attributes will think he's a good teacher. His class is fairly easy, but don't expect to learn anything.
He is not very helpful. He was Favoring girls since the beginning of the semester. I never got over a C in any assignment, I would recommend Deena Baker instead she is really helpful.
Take someone else. He's a joke.
Meh. Not the best but not the absolute worst. I wouldn't recommend.
Not an easy class, but what do you fools want? Estus is cool and his smartness makes him hot! haha
Everyone in my class learned a lot about composition, despite their best intentions. This teacher does have a dry, acerbic wit, perhaps not to everyone's liking. I greatly enjoyed that elements of the class resembled Master's level classes: my classmates did not all appreciate it. Not a class for the lazy, but most geeky types will get on well.
TERRIBLE!!!! He is rude and unhelpful. Never gives any room for mistakes and doesn't care if you pass or fail. All he has in life is teaching so he's on a power trip with it. VERY tough grader. HATE HIM!!!!
The class IS HARD if you don't make it a major priority. He grades extremely difficult. Takes attendance. Random quizzes on the readings from the book. Roughly 5-6 papers to write. Watches a lot of movies. Make a friend and the class will be easier! He is very nice through e-mails but doesn't allow room for lazy ppl.
Expects what a college teacher should. Any student with basic comprehension of grammar or sentence structure will do fine. Grades very thoroughly and comments on everything, which makes asking questions about specific grades easy. Random quizes, very easy to contact for help.
Great professor. 102 was my second time taking him after 101 and I liked him even more the second time around. He's eccentric and witty which keeps the class entertaining. He's a thorough grader and expects you to stick to his guidelines, but what good professor doesn't? Succeeding in his class is not hard as long as you do the work and do it right
Nice, funny professor. :)
Expect to spend at least 10-15 hours on all papers if you want a good grade. Mr, Estus is a very laid-back instructor and will help if you ask. He can be a little ovely insulting at times. He called me a whinner in front of the whole class because I didn't want to be in a specific group working on a project. Still a good instructor, but harsh.
A bit tough on grading, but be sure to spend a lot of time on your papers and use the writing center.
English is my worst subject. Previous instructors passed me into 101. I didn't know how unprepared I was until I took this class from Estus. I wish I had him for my earlier classes, so I wasn't so far behind. I had to work really hard to get a good grade, but it was worth it. I learned a lot. I wish he was a full time instructor.
This is by far the worst teacher on campus. Beware he is not helpful and does not let you make revisions on papers. Sadly although he seems like he knows he's material and is expecting way to much of students.
ENG 102 is "Intermediate Composition and Critical Thinking." Those who came unprepared to this class because their 101 instructors were too easy might find this class challenging. My cousins and friends took this instructor and said he really helped prepare them to transfer. So suck it up. Do the work, and you will be a better writer for it.
I took both ENG 101 & 102 from the guy. It was the best decision I made! No other instructor on campus cares as much as Estus about doing it right. It was hard at first, but I now know how to write honestly & clearly. If he didn't care or wasn't helpful, I wouldn't have graduated from a four-year and be starting grad school in the fall.
Smart, fair, funny, and pretty tough. A good teacher with really good material. Not my major but Im thinking it over.
I started out terrified but I've ended up loving the subject. Mr. eStus has funny stories and even tells jokes about grammar! (I know, strange;) Mostly he is really, really helpful.
I learned lots, including (unfortunately) that I was poorly prepared. What was good wasnt learning this (ouch) but figuring out, with the professors help, how to move ahead. I am grateful for Estus' input and his really careful reading and comments and such. And I did better grade-wise than I thought I would (always nice).
Took him for 101 and 102, and I would take him for more if I could. One student called him cool. He looked uncomfortable about that, but I'd call it accurate. Anyway, interesting readings, even if some were creepy (some derpina freaked out about every one). No textbook, money saved, happy me.
Stop texting and pay attention, and you should be okay. No endless revisions, no inflated grades, but an excellent reader and insightful commenter. (Dang his handwriting, though ;) ) Tip: prepare to do your best work ever or don't sign up.
All you had to do was be polite and work like mad on EVERYTHING... from "diction" to "grammar" to "formatting" to "not going crazy." Hard but worth it.
Some woman actually said he wont fail her because shes blond. Then the grades started coming. Should have tried another hair color? Great overall.
Film analysis was the best part. I had no idea...
I have never worked so hard in my life but I think the same goes for the prof. He is thorough, helpful and (only when he should be) kind and supportive; and a tough grader when he has to be. I survived AND I prospered. And I now recommend.
Super entertaining and chill. There's a lot of writing (duh), but if you take your papers seriously, put a good amount of effort in, and follow his instructions, you'll do fine. Class discussions are really interesting and even quite funny (as long as you're not easily offended), so participate in them and you'll get a lot out of his class.
Yeah he's a tough grader but he's also hilarious and a fantastic teacher. Don't take his class if you're easily offended, he's kind of a smart ass. If you're serious about your school work and have a decent sense of humor, you'll love him.
Taking his class was the best thing I have ever done. He will make you read, but his material is amazing! He did not require a book, and provided all the material. Professor Estus made me engage and think, and after all his lectures I always felt inspired, not to mention he is hilarious!!
suprised to see people saying there is too much writing, its a writing class. its crazy b/c grades and assignments are tuff but that is what college is about. am aiming for a B about (C+ so far...) but if i dont get it... that's ok. at least i am learning alot (just kidding, a lot is two words: i remember).
I highly recommended that you steer clear of his class. He does not offer any extra credit, and is a super strict grader. He offers no help and is hard to contact. If you value your life stay away. He expects nothing but perfection. Would not wish this class upon even my worst enemy.
Kinda funny. i dont know how I did yet but glad i took the class. beyond complete. spelling check, grammar check, mla check, everything else check. hard but worth doing.
R.I.P your 4.0 GPA if you take his class. Strict grader. No extra credit no makeups.
Only 1 group project so don't worry, it's not a speech class and the prof gets that. Hard class but not deadly hard. Listen and read and you'll probably be fine.
Glad I did it
Without doubt one of the best instructors on campus. He expects thoughtful, intelligent writing and responses, and when he gets these he responds with fine critiques and solid grades. True, if you struggle with writing, you might want to take someone else. I found the course somewhat difficult, but I did better than survive.
Professor Estus is a one of a kind teacher. He's funny and witty and observant. If you present him with an unformed thought, he will break it down and point out the errors. A big problem though is not being able to read his comments on your paper. I was too afraid to ask about them, but I got an A in the class. He's an idea man, not a grammarian.
Theres no one else like him. If you want to work hard and actually learn something worthwhile, take this man. Just dont expect handouts, favors, or ease.
Something good every day, great every week, profound every course. I have taken him twice; I wish there could be a third time.
English is my worst subject, so I expected this class to be hard. It wasn't as bad as I had expected. Plan to work hard, attend every class, do every assignment, and participate in class. It is worth it. p.s. Don't plagiarize. Don't cheat. And definitely do EVERY assignment. And you'll do well.
His take on aint and other such peculiarities of the language is refreshing, in a non-browserish way. (The only computer joke I know, and you all dont laugh?) Wish he was full time, but Ill bet he does too. Then again, maybe he doesnt. Who can say? He seems incredibly self-possessed. What does he need with even more hours a day of us?
Was the only professor to ever make me cry
Okay, he was a super nice guy and I liked him as a person but he is extremely tough at grading. I felt a lot of my papers deserved higher grades than was given. If you write the best papers ever get ready for a rude awakening. Hes really funny and his lectures are interesting and I enjoyed the class but grading sucked.
This professor is a tough grader, English was never my bad subject and yet to him my papers were never "good enough". When you do receive papers back all you see is chicken scratch all over. He doesn't use Canvas for grades and there are a bunch of long readings. Class time was wasted on movies that were hardly relevant, devote time elsewhere.
Hes a good person not a good teacher. He will make you read pages and pages in 2 days and then say read it Bc I might give a test or not. When he would give test they would be very specific questions that even if you read it you wouldnt get the right answer.
Tough grader? Well, that's just too bad. The best in a small group of first-rate lecturers? Sure. Are his standards high as God's shoetops? Yes and yes, but think what they say about Those Who Did Well. Would I take this dude again? I would, but I'd be wearing my ego-saving waders from Lands' End. (See, I do know about the apostrophe.)
I like him and I liked the class. I might be nervous if I were a beginner, but Im not that guy, so Im not that nervous. I mean, I wasnt so I wasnt. The art project was really about Russians and pacing and meaning. Pretty cool overall.
It was exhausting, but I was glad for the opportunity to find out just how good I was (or, uh, wasnt). I can write who knew? But it was a long time before I figured out that I was gonna pass with a good grade. (Keeping us in suspense seems part of the plan) Overall, a tough but really good experience. (Twice: I took him for 101 AND 102.)
The class was just movies, reading 1-3 things from the New Yorker that were over 10,000 words every week, and essays related to neither. He grades tough, but surprisingly some of the stuff I didn't really try on, managed higher grades. Quizzes in class are based on the readings and you'll never know your grade until the very end.
Accomplished and scary smart, with a mind like a steel trap made from a screen door, he says. Anyway, funny and intriguing, with a genuine interest in ideas and what you do with them. We watched three movies, one of them about 30 mins long, and the rest was reading, writing, and discussion. Fun, in a work your brains out kind of way.
I find writing kinda tough but the subjects he picked helped a lot. They were never boring. Heads up, college is about reading, so get used to it.
He was not a good teacher and grades unnecessarily hard for an English 101 class. Also he treats the whole class like their twelve and it is very annoying. He just needs to retire already
Gotta say, its a love-hate thing with you people: the slackers (always on their phones) are mad about their grades and the hard workers (always reading & writing) are happy about theirs. Simple as that. Me? I was preeeety happy...
Discussions range widely. I remember talking about everything from art to politics to science, all in two hours, and it all connected up. Maybe he grades a little hard for some people, but a good grade from Prof. Estus really means something. Unless you just wanna get by, I recommend him.
Took him twice. Kinda fussy about how you use words and how you quote because he says he has to prepare us for university work. Heck dude isnt that what youre making us do now. But its OK. I dont want to go to Cal State and find out I dont know anything. A friend had to repeat english, I dont think that will happen with this prof's students.
I actually really like Professor Estus, he is pretty funny. He is strict though, no phones in class, and there is quiet a bit of reading that you need to do and comprehend. In his class grammar, MLA formatting, and a correct works cited is really important, but I thought he was really cool. I would take him again, he just makes you actually do work
Estus's "class" is a complete joke and a waste of your time. He throws on movies that are complete garbage and will leave the class every session. There is no teaching found here. He likes to chat about topics he's into like Scientology and you must chime in or he won't like you at all. Readings are pointless as well. Overall a waste of time.
Didnt take him for 101 but I wish I had. Interesting readings, interesting class. I found it really hard but worth it (I did well!). Do every assignment, and do it on time.
Ive taken lit and comp courses at two and four year schools, and Ive got to say that this guy knows a lot. I had a lot of sssssssssssssssssssssssssssin his class (102). He carries his learning lightly, as people say, but youre never in doubt that hes a smart (and good) man. Highly recommended.
Worst English professor out there. Do not take. Say goodbye to your GPA. I retook the class with another professor and passed easily with an A. Save your time.
"I retook the class with another professor and passed easily with an A": doesn't that tell you something? It's not my intention to insult other profs, but if Prof Estus is hard and (some) others are super easy, that's a bad sign, don't you think? I'll take the tough grader. Grades aren't everything, anyway.
quite possibly the worst english teacher to exist. he is such a tough grader even if youre good at writing he will mark you down for being too good. worst online class ever (due to covid) if you have the option for another teacher PLEASE take them. you will not regret it. Estus does not care about you and he is extremely rude and careless.
Avoid taking him at all cost. He favors women and just really rude if you ask for help after class. I don't mind him being a tough grader, but when you can't even read his writing for the feedback is ridiculous. He has taught at Crafton for over 15 years and they still haven't made him full time. What does that tell you?
I took English 101 online with Professor Estus. It was basically self-paced, so I wasn't in a live class at all. However, through text I found Professor Estus to be funny and helpful. He gave clear directions for the assignments and good feedback on essays. Proper formatting and grammar are important. Just follow directions and you'll be fine.
Really an awesome class
This class was very interesting and a lot more enjoyable than I expected. He deserves a higher score, honestly. He does a great job engaging with the whole class, even online. It is structured so well! Take this course!
While his strict grading may indicate his passion for teaching, my experience was terrible. He wasn't encouraging, and I dreaded turning in the assignments. His "criticism" was always harsh and was never helpful. Out of all the teachers I had, he's the worst. I wouldn't recommend him to any of my peers.
He will criticize you heavily on your writing assignments and won't give you academic feedback. He has weird topics like abortion and eugenics; he uses slurs like "illegals" when referring to undocumented people. He refers to Asians as "slants". He does not post grades on canvas. Do not take this class.
Needed this class to transfer and was lucky to add it. Self-motivation is key. If you want to do well and improve, logon and stay on top of weekly tasks. I loved the range of topics discussed and videos watched as part of the class. There were graded assignments with a decent amount of feedback. Take him before you transfer.
A lot of reading and assignments. Really tough grader.
I recommend switching immediately if your major is not in English.
This professor refused to use the online gradebook or the online calendar for assignments. And he gave out a lot of coursework. I dont know why he didnt use the due dates he already put in to make it easier for his students. He also refused to give A's with some drawn out explanation of how it was better "back in the day".
Not easy but not hard either. He provides lots of feedback. He is very responsive and loves his job.
He is a terrible professor. I took this class just for a prerequisite. It was a basic English 102 class and he made it feel like it was an honors class. I spent more time doing homework for this class then I did for the class that focused on my major.
Good luck having him respond to an email. He's a joke of a professor.
If you want a professor that values there students, he is not the that kind of professor.
Waste of time, find a new professor.
Don't bother with this class.
He never even answered my email after two weeks!
How can someone be a professor but then not teach.
He gave too much homework. If you have no life, you'll do great in his class.
He have too much homework.
He gave too much homework and he says he reads his emails bit he doesn't.
Did not help at all, encouraged me to just “give up”
his overall online teaching is terrible. He refuses to do voice lectures, only can be contacted through email, and every paper you turn in will probably just be criticized rather than helped on. It seems more like an honors class especially when theres an essay due every 1 to 2 weeks. If you're looking for an online english class, stray away :/
Assigns to much work I dropped his class the second week
Ummmmmmmmmm girl bye-
I took this class online. I didn't get the grade I wanted, but I learned a lot. Some used AI to write for them and got better grades. Some got caught not writing their own stuff and tried to get the him in trouble. The class is not easy, but work hard and get better.
