This is by far the best chemistry proff at Temple University. If you are interested in learning the material, becoming prepared for standardized exams, and receiving a fair grade, then take Dr. Fleming! He grades, and returns exams promptly and his office is always open for questions or concerns. Study hard, go to class, and ask questions, get "A".
I had him for both 2201 and 2202. Dr. Fleming is the best! He will make learning Organic Chem exciting and he will encourage students to do well. He is approachable and readily available. Go to class, do the homework and ask questions. Tests are straight forward and fair. You will not be disappointed.
Dr. Flemming was an absolutely great teacher. He is helpful and bright and takes the time to get to know all of his students even in classes with 200 kids. We became pretty good friends out of class and he is willing to meet and help with you 24/7. He has some funny jokes and is very reasonable...tests are crazy hard but fairly curved. Loads of fun
He is the best professor I've ever had. I'm still in his class now, but so far I haven't seen any downside to taking his class. His class is more difficult than other professors, but he wants to see everyone succeed and is willing to go above and beyond to make sure that you do. If you get the chance, TAKE HIM!
I'm still currently taking his class now, and so far, he is the best! He genuinely cares about the students and their goals and will take the time to know you. The second time I talked to him, he already knew my name. His tests are straight forward, but the material itself is a little difficult. You'll regret not taking his class.
I had always wanted to take Dr.Fleming for my Orgo classes, but it never happened because his section always filled up and no greencard would be issued by Findeisen. However, I was going to see my orgo 2 professor who wasn't available,I went to Fleming and he STILL helped me solve my problem. He is the only Orgo teacher who knows why they are here.
I go to his class and I'm not in it. He's that good.
Fleming is an excellent teacher. His tests are very reasonable, though slightly trickier than other O. Chem tests. However, he prepares his students better than the other teachers, so don't sweat because test might be a little harder. Tests were on Saturday =( but he gave us as much time as we wanted =). Excellent.
Best chemistry teacher at Temple, no doubt. He genuinely cares about each and every one of his students and wants everyone to succeed. His tests are a bit harder than the other teachers, but the difference is that he prepares you extremely well, and is always willing to give extra help if you need it. Put in the effort and you'll do very well.
he is amazing. hands down the most helpful teacher iive had in college so far. he wants to to get an A. he will work with you everyday if you just come to him for help. he is passionate about orgo, and that is what makes him different from all the other professors.
He is the best professor you will ever have! I had him for both Orgo I and II, and I am going to miss that man. He genuinely cares about his students, which is very rare to find at Temple. Although his tests are a little difficult, he wants you to think. That's the difference from other profs. I am not going to find a prof. like him again. :(
Dr. Fleming is without a doubt the BEST professor I've ever had! His class is harder than others, but you really will learn the material. His tests and quizzes are pretty tough and tricky, but extremely fair - you get what you deserve. He genuinely cares about each and every student, is ALWAYS available for help, and makes orgo easy to understand
His class was probably the toughest class I had taken thus far, but it was also the best and most rewarding. His outlines in lecture are extremely helpful and his quizzes (most were take-home) & exams require you to THINK. Fleming made me appreciate organic chemistry. As intimidating as he may seem, don't be afraid to ask him questions!
I love, love, LOVE this man! Even if you may not doing so hot on the exams/quizzes, he will try his best to help you if you ask him to. My one-on-one sessions with him got me through orgo. Lecture is awesome. He does randomly call on people, but that's just to make sure we're keeping up with the material. He cares a lot!
Favorite professor ever. Hands down. It helps that I love chemistry, but even if I didn't, I feel like he would make class enjoyable. He is extremely helpful, funny and willing to go out of his way for you. He even knows things about the MCAT, PCAT, DAT, etc. and will give you any advice he has on anything if you ask him. I so highly recommend him.
If you are reading this Dr. Fleming, then you know who it is. You are the best professor at Temple !!!!
Hands down, the best professor at Temple! Very helpful, extremely knowledgeable, and hilarious. Don't let gen chem or the bio department discourage you; Fleming is the light at the end of the long, dark tunnel of being a science major.
By far the best organic chem professor at temple.Teaches on the white board!Explains everything very clearly and tells u what to focus on for the tests! However his test are tricky and he will throw alot of curve balls!Probably gives one of the hardest tests out of the rest. But if ur serious about orgo take him. Took him for orgo2 and adv orgo!
Amazing.
I don't get why his rating is so high.... he really isn't all that great. You ask him a question and he stares at you funny for a few minutes and sometimes chooses not to even answer. I swear he thinks hes too smart for your questions sometimes. Please do yourself a favor and take someone else. Fair warning.
Best professor ever. Don't be discouraged by the comment below. He lives up to the hype.
He is an incredible prof. I would honestly like to take all of my science classes with him. Very well organized, articulate, thorough and brilliant. Organic is an incredibly difficult class and he is the top of the line as prof's go. Also, he makes it fun with music before class and the occasional joke after. (3 wishes)
He was a good professor. Tough class because the subject is hard but he was really organized and helped you out if you went to him.
Awesome Prof. He is as good as that Prof from SUU I had!
Great orgo prof! Best there is. Exams are rigorous and make you stretch your abilities - but what the heck is school for if not to LEARN something?! He will prepare you for the ACS exam very well. Organized presentations help make a hard subject manageable. Don't take too many time-consuming classes, though, this one will suck up a lot of time!
Had him for Orgo I and II, and he is the best teacher I have had throughout my 15 years of school. He actually wants students to succeed. Open ended exams are great and actually allow you to think and show your knowledge on the material. Wish the Bio dept learned how to teach from Fleming. Switched from bio to chem after taking him. A+ teacher
He is great and know his material really well. His test is very hard but you definitely learn something. He very helpful and very easy to talk to.
helpful but too hard
Fleming is an outstanding teacher. He's extremely organized and explains everything thoroughly. His exams aren't hard, but there are tricks all over the place. He has half of quizzes take homes and he's usually in his office so that's helpful. And he does have some funny jokes on his exams or late in the classes.
He's a really good teacher but before you take him make sure that you're ready for his tests! He has them on Saturday mornings and you really have to know your stuff if you want to do well. Half of the quizzes are take home but those can be hard too. Nevertheless, he really does teach well but you have to try extra hard to get a good grade.
Fleming is a really great teacher. Recitation is not mandatory in his classes, but its recommended that you go although I never once went. His tests are taken on Saturdays and are extremely challenging. It took me 1 hr to get full credit on this extremely hard synthesis problem but he gives you unlimited time however.
Exceptional teacher but can be somewhat cryptic in his answers to your questions. Well worth the experience you will learn a great deal if you are interested in chemistry.
Definitely go to class! He doesnt teach from the book and quizzes and tests are just like his lectures. Gives pretty good notes.
Best teacher in temple hands down. Does an amazing job with teaching the material. He moves at a perfect pace and is amazingly helpful. One thing is try to keep up cause once youre behind youre not going to catch up easily. His tests are challenging but if you honestly know just your basics you can easily get a C. His curves are crazy.
If I could give a zero for easiness, this would be the class to give it for! VERY hard, if you haven't done Orgo in a while DO NOT take this class. Don't bother too much with the text book unless you can get it free. He is so beyond intelligent but picking his brain for answers is like solving puzzles.
Extremely helpful, very driven t o be a great teacher not just a great scientist. Highly recommended, curves are generous, but you better be ready to wok hard. Do not fall behind.
this guys...reason why I LOVE orgo. He brings so much depth and richness to this subject that makes you sit up in your chair. Got an A and barely used the book, but when i do it's the one he wrote and not the required one for class. His notes are KEY in exams and for first timers PLEASE USE A TAPE RECORDER. ASK HIM TO DO H20 MOTION/VIBRATION DANCE!
This guy...is why I LOVE orgo. He has the mastery of teaching this course down to near perfection. Got an A without having to read much of the book, but when I do it's the one he had written. Key to his class are taking meticulous notes and for first timers in orgo 1, invest in a TAPE RECORDER! ASK HIM TO DO THE H20 MOTION/VIBRATION DANCE!
Doc knows chemistry like the back of his hand. He will have you learn the material instead of making you memorize countless reactions. He will prepare you for any exam (HEADS UP He writes most of the final). His class is very challenging but HE IS the best chem professor. His reviews help a lot. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE NOT SERIOUS ABOUT ORGO.
Best orgo prof at Temple. He truly loves the subject, and wants to make his students love it too. Beyond understanding and helpful. That once-in-a-lifetime kind of professor. I'd take every class with Fleming if I could.
Doctor Fleming will turn a class that the vast majority of students seem to loathe, into something that is not only engaging, but will also have you asking yourself at times, "Am...am I have fun? I think this is actually fun!" Make no mistake: Doc will make you work for your grade. But if you want to learn the material as best as you can, take Doc
Good professor make sure to go to his office hours!
Dr Fleming is really smart but he is not very helpful outside the classroom. He often makes fun of your questions if they are not up to his standards. He pushes you too hard to do good on the final. I still recommend him over what i've heard about other orgo profs. at temple, but prepare to study A LOT. Good luck!
Dr. Fleming is a brilliant man, but sometimes can have a hard time lowering himself to the intelligence level of his students. He seemed to mock "stupid" questions (which really would only seem stupid to an expert) and wouldn't really give straightforward answers about the material, which isn't helpful when students are completely lost.
He is definitely the best organic teacher I've ever had. I would be embarrassed asking such stupid questions to him in the beginning but if you just work with him you'll see he's useful and actually a really great guy. I used to stop in to just chat a lot. I didn't get to take him for orgo 2 but his teaching definitely prepared me to do well.
Let me say that Dr. Fleming is one of the few teachers who truly cares about his class. That being said, Orgo is definitely the toughest class out there, in my opinion. But if you have to take it, take Fleming. If you are studying for the MCAT's, it'll be a breeze because of how great Dr. Fleming is with teaching. Expect to WORK for your grade.
Orgo is a hard class but Doc makes it fun and enjoyable (some what). You need to have a strong GEN Chem background to succeed because he goes fast and assume that you have mastered the basics. Go to office hours early and often and don't be afraid to ask him questions. He will never give you the answer right away. He will make you use your head
Doc is tough, but a great professor. Ask anyone, orgo is tough but he forces you to understand, not just memorize. If you want to do anything in Chemistry and actually learn, you need to take him. Very fair and the curve is nice. Make sure you plan on working for an A.
Doc did a great job teaching Organic Chemistry. He challenged you during the semester, but I was well prepared for the final exam. Do the homework in the book, and you'll be surprised how much you learn! Encourages you to learn and understand, not memorize.
Doc was one of my favorite professors at Temple! He teaches at a very fast rate compared to the other organic professors, where they were usually 2-4 chapters behind. His exams are not multiple choice and usually consists of free response, but it prepares you for the ACS exam which is all MC. Also read the textbook!!!
Doc is above and beyond a once in a life time professor. He does expect you to know a lot, which hurt me in the class. His tests aren't so much difficult, but sometimes poorly worded. His primary interest is in the students learning. let him worry about your grade and you worry about learning
Amazing professor. Best professor for orgo that you will ever find. Nice and helpful. Tests are long and NOt to easy but def worth it. Never ever skip a class. Ever. Would def take again.
After wrapping up my second semester with Doc, I can firmly resolve he is the best professor I have ever had. His tests are incredibly difficult, but I didn't study for the ACS final and did well on it. If you would rather get a C+ but actually be challenged and learn the concepts, rather than an A and have a cake walk, then take Doc.
Class was a breeze especially if you had him for organic 1. Doc was a very lenient grader because the exams are free response, so there is a lot of partial credit involved. The best way to get an A in the class is to do as much practice problems as you can do, create outlines of each chapter (especially reagents), and stay above the curve!!!
He is a great professor. While the material he is teaching is difficult, he manages to make it engaging. He is funny in a unique way and knows everyone by name.
When teaching the concept he runs all around the place and does not explain the concept deeply , take off a lot of points in test and quiz. Different textbook for both honors and regular...
Fleming is a tough teacher, but really cares about you learning the information as opposed to you regurgitating information on a test. He is a more than fair grader and has a fundamental understanding of the students' perspective when it comes to taking a college course. By far the best teacher I've had in my college career.
He is a great professor and really cares about his students actually learning the material and coming out ready for grad school. He takes care of your grades so you can focus on learning and not just getting an A. Beware, however, if english is your second language, if you are a slow learner, or if you have a learning disability. He moves very fast
Dr. Fleming really cares about his student. very organized professor and is very helpfull. he's always willing to help in office hours and worried about your grades. always looking for way to make you have betters grades.
Please don't listen to the reviews about him caring about your grades. He has his own grading system and it does not go by numbers, but by what he thinks you deserve and he curves to increase the honors grades. Work hard and do not put your grade merely in his hands because he does what he wants anyway.
If you work hard & understand, you will do well in any Organic Chem class. Don't take this class because he requires you to use his textbook for Honors and once you buy it, its worthless. You can't sell it back or to other students because there's a new edition every year AND the bookstore has policies on not accepting this particular book used.
He's a great professor and expects you to know all of gen chem and orgo 1 (and loves NMR). He's willing to help you understand concepts on anything so visit his office hours. Lectures are based off the book and he goes quickly so try really hard not to skip any classes!
One of the hardest and yet classiest professor overall. He is tough, you have to know your stuff and be prepared. But his notes are amazing, and more than his notes, his attention to students I received the worst grade overall in all of college in his class but he said if anyone (grad school) had a problem with it, he would back me up.
The professor treat students unfairly, he treats people with better grade more and doesn't trust his student at all
Dr. Fleming is one of the best professors in the chemistry department, I recommend taking him since he is one of the only professors that can actually get through enough of the material to prepare you for the ACS final for each semester.
Fleming is an absolute godsend. Organic Chemistry not fun, but you have to take it. Fleming is enthusiastic about the subject material, open to discussion, clear and concise, and genuinely cares for his students. Truly work your hardest and show up to class, he will notice. He is a tough teacher, but if I had to take Orgo again, I would with him.
If you want to learn organic chemistry and learn it well, take his classes. He knows his stuff and gives very good lectures, but he does tend to go fast. He goes above and beyond to teach, so he expects you to go above and beyond to learn. A's are possible if you put in the work. You will get the grade you deserve.
I am so sad that I can't take Dr. Fleming next semester. He was an amazing lecturer who really makes you understand what is happening. He's a tough grader, but I believe that just made me a better student, as you had to make sure every little detail was perfect before turning your test/quiz in.
I've had Doc for 4 classes over the past 2 years. I also do research in organic synthesis at Temple, so I know all of the organic professors here. Fleming is the best of them all. Original exams, quizzes, and lecture notes. You can master basic organic if you have the will to, and he'll make sure of it. He can be robotic but really cares about you.
Dr. Fleming is the best teacher I have ever had. He is funny, extremely intelligent and is that kind of professor that makes you want them to like you, as you respect him so much. He teaches class extremely well, and although it is a slightly difficult class, it is by no means impossible. Doc is an amazing guy and I was honored to have him.
He really is a good Organic Chemistry teacher and probably the best one at Temple. His lectures are really important but he is really organized and gives clear information. You will not regret taking him and others who did not wish that they did.
He's is a good teacher, visit his office hours but bring practice problems you tried to solve. If you don't he wouldn't be too nice!
He makes you think during quizzes and exams, but if you put effort and show interest in the class, at the very least you will pass, with a B or higher, he gives out C's pretty easily if you at least tried. Tests are open ended so you get credit for what you do. Get to know him hes an awesome guy and very understanding! His lectures are very helful
Doc is easily one of the best professors I've ever had. He loves the subject and will do everything to help you learn the material. The exams can be tough but very manageable as long as you put in the work and know the material very well. Reading the book and doing the book problems help. Take notes in class and get to know him, he's a great guy.
Teaches everything he can, and then tests on it. You can rely on the notes alone to do pretty well, he goes over the chemistry as he sees it. Cover all your bases when studying because he will hit points you might not have thought of
Fleming expects you to learn on your own from the textbook. Class is mostly a review session. His ability to explain concepts has waned considerably; he teaches too fast and skips many important steps when explaining things. Only sign up for his session if you are ready to grind it out by yourself.
the tests are on saturdays and they're unnecessarily long. theyre pretty hard and require a lot of though and critical thinking but easier if you have back exams. He does a really good job to prepare you to be an organic chemist BUT, ALAS, most ppl dont want to do that. I recommend taking an easier professor. He will do evry thing to hlp u learn.
I took both Orgo I and Orgo II with him. I think he's the best professor that I've had at Temple. He simplifies the material more than you think; after talking to many other students in the other organic classes, they still don't understand what any of it means. Fleming teaches in an intuitive way that fosters long-term understanding.
I honestly don't know why I have to pay for this class since I had to taught myself through. Fleming's admittedly a great researcher in his field, but since he's too high up there, apparently he has difficulty communicating w us average folks. He answers questions by responding in a way as if he couldn't get why you don't know the answers already.
Dr. Fleming is the most skilled professor at Temple University. I took his class bc I overheard some people talking in the library about this outstanding orgo professor, and he has exceeded my expectations. He relies on conceptual understanding rather than math to communicate the material, and he is incredibly available to his students for help.
Had him for orgo 1; taking him for orgo 2 now. He's easily the best organic chemistry professor at Temple. He's super passionate about orgo, and he even writes the questions on the ACS finals, so you can trust him more than any of the other professors to be teaching you the right material. Tells funny stories and has a great sense of humor, too.
He might be condescending at 1st but when you get to know him you will like him ALOT. I had him for orgo 1 and 2 and I worked my ass off for his class but it does help a lot when I move further into my major classes like CHEM4401. Just don't get scared of him even tho he is scary lmao keep asking questions till u get your answer :D.
Best choice for orgo at Temple. You'll learn a lot, try to find backs other than the ones he gives you. Prefers when students arent premed.
Best orgo prof at Temple! His lectures are extremely thorough and he gives tests on Saturdays w unlimited time and lots of partial credit. Posts old tests and is always available for office hours. Quirky guy, but don't let that put you off! Do the book practice problems on your own and I promise you'll excel. Switched to honors bec he's that good.
Dr. Fleming has got to be the best science professor. He truly has an understanding and passion for the subject. His lectures are funny and he explains material thoroughly. His exams are open ended so you need to truly know how to do the problems, but he really prepares you for exams and MCAT
Doc is such an amazing professor who really gives all he's got for his students. Always available during office hours and overall he's a generous grader on quizzes and exams. Simply the best you could get for organic chemistry, and tailors the class to pre-med students. Not a fan of his book at all, but you can always find more problems online!
Dr. Fleming is very passionate and a very good teacher. His exams are hard and on Saturday mornings, but he's willing to help you if you ask him. Sometimes unapproachable but overall a cool dude. You'll learn a lot.
Dr. Fleming is one of the best professors at Temple. Go to class, go to his office hours, and do a little bit of orgo every day and you'll be fine. He is very understanding and wants you to improve. If you put in the work you will not only get a good grade but actually learn and retain the information. This class is hard but he makes it manageable.
Fleming is a great professor, and an overall solid human being. His exams are difficult, and he gives a lot of quizzes (at least one a week). If taken with a solid workload, this class can feel absolutely smothering. That being said, Doc is readily available via email and office hours. He is understanding and more than willing to work with you.
Very clear and structured lectures. Read the textbook before going to lecture, it helped me understand each lecture when I did that. He has very clear expectations with what reactions and concepts to focus on, and direct with which mechanisms to know. That being said, do not be afraid to switch to him for 2202 if you did not have him for 2201!
Doc is truly the best professor anybody can ask for. He was intimidating at first but when you do get to know him, hes a true gem. He cares a lot about his students and hes always accessible during office hours and would love to help you solve and figure out a question together. He has his own grading system as well. Orgo is hard and it takes time.
yes, Orgo is hard, but Doc makes it a breeze and fun to learn. His lectures are so helpful and easy to understand. he is always willing to help in his office hours or by email. His quizzes and exams are tough but they really prepare you. I dont know how I would have been able to get through orgo 1 and 2 without this man. There is no better option.
I'm not sure why this professor has such a high rating. I went to his office hours once and never went back. He told me to my face that I needed to teach myself the material and that he won't help me because I had dumb questions. His grading was inconsistent all the time. Taught myself the entire course from Youtube
Doc's content is straightforward and organizationally fantastic. Very intelligent prof who cares about making orgo accessible and understandable. He has a sense of humor and is helpful in office hours. Receptive to feedback. Plus, the TAs are absolutely phenomenal!! Loved this class for teaching me how to think critically.
4201 review only! Do not take class unless familiar with Flemings teaching style and confident in orgo skills. Very few example problems in class and next to no practice problems (this is a problem solving class). Lecture is broad and text book is too detailed you will be spending most time googling questions and looking for practice problems.
Fleming's class is no joke. If you want to learn orgo, take him. If you want a chance at an A, don't take him. All tests are free response and not necessarily a good thing since he is super nit-picky. This class is already hard online, imagine what it's like in person. Be prepared to study hard. Not a good lecturer and learned more from his TAs.
Doc was a pretty good lecturer. I like the open ended format of his exams because he just wants to see the thinking behind your answer and will give points for a wrong answer as long as he sees you were in the right line of thinking. Have to say, I couldnt have done this class without his class helpers.
Fleming is a great professor, but 4201 is a hard class. If you had him before, he is more willing to help you now than in 2201/2. Lectures are dense, but try to remember to do his outlines and try the back exam he posts before any review session as he bases the exams off the outlines. Loved this class, but don't take if you want an easy elective.
i thought fleming was going to be amazing like everyone said, but i did not like his lecturing style at all. He is a caring and kind prof, but i could not learn from his lectures. i often read the book and went to adam's review sessions and learned way more from him. tests were difficult as well. read the tb and watch other vids to do well.
doc's lectures were ok but i never looked at the material beforehand so i was always lost during his lectures. i ended up learning everything from the TAs instead cuz they explained the material really well. however, doc is extremely caring and is very helpful during office hours. the exams were really difficult no matter how much i studied.
Doc is very smart, but I always feel lost in lecture because he goes so fast. Exams are difficult but they force you to learn the material one way or another. Never opened the textbook and learned mostly through TA's/recitation.
Fleming likes to make his exams a learning experience. Most people don't like that because it means he puts things you never learned on the exams. Also he grades based on grade breaks in the class, which is annoying especially during online classes because some people cheat and do amazing and the people who actually earn their grades do worse.
Mediocre teacher at best and very overhyped, could not follow his lectures honestly and would have failed without his amazing Student TA. Grading is very loose and subjective, was not clear, always had us anxious. I was also a few points away from an A and he would not round up after stressing how generous he was
GOATED professor. If you want to learn O-Chem, take Dr. Fleming. You have to go to lectures and take notes, most of the problems you encounter on tests and quizzes are derived from material he either mentions on the board or in the handouts he gives. Go to his office hours, even if he might roast you, it's def worth it. Super cool guy.
Don't get the hype around this guy. Took it because he's the honors prof and figured it would teach me more for the MCAT. Regret it greatly. Very hard to get an A in both Orgo 1 and 2, and taught me triple the info I needed for the MCAT. Take the non honors prof and save a lot of stress, unless you want to be an organic chemist.
Dr. Fleming is awesome, Orgo is hard to understand and doc does his best to teach and does it very well.
Doc is a great professor! I was very intimidated by the class at the start, but as I started going to his office hours and attending the tutoring sessions, I did great! Just make sure to stay on track and attend lectures. He's more than willing to help you succeed and definitely recognizes improvements!
A good lecturer, although fairly fast paced. His TAs helped me through. Generous with partial credit and grade breaks. His ways of answering questions are pretty confusing and not too straightforward but you'll leave knowing what you needed to.
Fleming always seemed like he was there to help us. Never felt like a teacher vs student, just him trying to teach us as if we were co-workers. His exams are hard but his grading is fair. For our year he didnt assign online homework, so I wont comment on the homework load, there was none. His accessibility for office was crazy. 4 times week
Doc is a really passionate teacher who cares about how the students do. He does make tough exams and makes sure that you earn your Orgo grade. Of course the material is really tough but he does his best to make it as painless as possible. Really caring and is very accessible outside of class with a crazy amount of office hours.
Awesome professor! Definitely cares a lot about his students and wants them to succeed. But don’t take him if you’re not willing to put in the work. He’s helpful outside of class although he can be a little mean during office hours, don’t let that discourage you. That’s his way of teaching you. I’m sad i’m almost done with Orgo:(
The best Orgo professor by far. That said he does probably give the hardest exams of all the Orgo profs but he also prepares you best for them. Amazing guy and wish I could take him again. Truly makes you think .
Orgo is always difficult, but Dr. Fleming made it so great. He is incredibly understanding and accessible and will always offer help and support. You will have to put a LOT of time into studying and doing practice problems, but it is so worth it. His exams are open ended and on Saturday mornings, but there is no time limit.
I love doc as a person; he's very kind, caring, and passionate about what he does. Honestly, I just don't think he's a good teacher. He knows a lot about organic chemistry and teaches it at a higher level than most students can understand. I could never follow his lectures and ended up using Crash Course organic chemistry videos on youtube to pass.
Organic itself is very difficult, but Doc is your best shot at it if you want to stay in your major. Put a lot of work in!
I have very mixed feelings about this professor. He definitely sets you up for success and it is very feasible to get a good grade in this class. On the other hand, he can be condescending and uncommunicative about grades.
Definitely the kindest chemistry professor at Temple; understanding and teaches well. That said, his exams are definitely the most challenging of all, honors or not apparently. The best professor to choose to learn, the worst for your GPA (unless you're up for challenge), like it seems like his exam questions belong in a chemistry challenge book.
Lots of work. VERY Harsh grader, prepare to lose points on the smallest things. Acceptable at teaching material, nothing to write home about. Orgo is best taught on your own. It's a better idea to take Jasmin, teach yourself the material using PowerPoints, and take the free A from tests with crazy good scales. Cool guy but not worth the grade hit.
Very good lecturer- definitely have to pay attention in class to do well on exams. Exams are Saturdays with mostly unlimited time- they are very hard. He gives very generous partial credit. He is very intimidating (and sometimes rude), but definitely helps you earn the grade in the end. After taking him, had a very thorough understanding of Orgo 1.
I think I have taken every class that Doc offers: 2201, 2022, 4201, 4207. Without a doubt my favorite professor. Lectures are heavy and he's extremely passionate about the material. Exams are dense but graded fairly. Gives extremely good and quick feedback, and does all grading by hand - yet still grades faster than those with 5 TAs. Take him!
Had him for honors organic 1 & 2, and this is my third course with him. I'll tell you right now; Doc sparked my love for chemistry, but if you're looking for an easy organic professor, he isn't for you. He's generous with partial credit and the grades are curved fairly, but his exams are extremely difficult-- requiring mastery level understanding.
I withdrew from his class because I changed my major and no longer had to take his class and decided to spend my time working on my other classes. He was very empathetic and understanding of my decision and offered to let me come to class and even take the quizzes and exams since I still liked the class. He wished me luck on my new major.
I was honestly surprised at how easy this class is compared to how people describe ochem. Just study and read the textbook and you should be able to get an A.
Dr. Fleming is a very nice and caring professor but the honors section is very tough, unless you did great in chem 2 and are usually get A's in your classes then don't plan on getting an A in this class. Many people end up with an A- but that's after pouring in hours of studying and work into this class.
I had Dr. Fleming for Orgo I. Only 9 people in the 100+ lecture hall got an A at the end, and if you do poorly on the exams, you are basically done. Besides the grading, he is a fantastic professor and lecturer, and his teaching allows students to fully understand the content. By the end of the class, I felt confident going on to Orgo II.
absolutely love doc. genuinely don't think I could speak more highly about any other professor. His exams are challenging to say the least but sets you up for success, makes ochem interesting, and dare I say, fun? Smart passionate guy and really cares about his students. you'll have to WORK your ass off but take him if you truly want to learn
FleminGOAT. Doc is a great professor who shows passion for O-Chem. Tough exams, but his teaching style is phenomenal and sets you up for success and understanding of the subject. I took his Orgo I class, and liked him so much that I went out of my way to take his Orgo II Honors class. He's also humorous and I have the utmost respect for him.
Doc is a good teacher and always accessible outside of class. He definitely has a high opinion of himself and his subject area, which can be frustrating at times. The ochem classes heavily cater toward pre-med students so if that's not you it can feel useless. The material is incredibly dense and difficult and requires significant effort.
I would take him again if I learned Chemistry through Khan Academy's Chemistry Course Library. If you actually don't understand basic general Chemistry, then this class will be a nightmare.
He was definitely tough, but orgo is terrible and he at least made it bearable. He's a harsh grader and his expectations are really high, but he was really funny and a really nice guy.
If you had a very weak background in orgo 1, DO NOT TAKE FLEMING. Does not post his notes online, he writes them all down during lecture on the whiteboard and records the lectures, but sometimes it's hard to make out his writing. Very accessible during office hours. Does not curve nearly as heavily as other orgo professors.
Doc is hands down the best orgo professor for both orgo 1 and 2 (this is coming from someone who wasn't even in Doc's sections for orgo 1). Yes, his take home/in class quizzes and exams are difficult, and yes he can be a tough grader, but despite these points, I genuinely believe that anyone can get an A in this class! Please do all practice sets!!
Professor Fleming is a knowledgeable but challenging teacher. The material is incredibly dense, so be prepared to put in serious effort. Supplement lectures with resources like the textbook, study groups, and even Unstuck ai to stay on top of the content.
Fleming is the best professor for Organic Chemistry hands down. I know all of the material like the back of my hand; however, he is quite a tough grader. He wants you to learn, emphasizing the importance of coming to office hours to understand why you got questions wrong. He will work with you as long as you put the effort in.
He teaches very well and is willing to clarify if u ask him. He holds office hours often and is pretty available. For quizzes, he is often lenient if you miss a quiz and need to make it up. At the end of the semester, he has u fill out a survey for any recommended changes and will use them for the next semester. He also gives a curve for grades.
He is dismissive and short whenever you go to him individually. As a lecturer, he's just fine, but he goes through so much material every single class that you never really get to absorb what he's saying, especially in orgo II (orgo I was a lot more manageable once you acclimate to his teaching). There is an assessment every week, which isn't fun.
Doc was hands down the best STEM teacher at TU and compared to the other orgo teachers he was heaven sent ppl complain about the curve not being a lot but that's only bc he lowk doesn't need to curve a lot bc his class does better on exams than the others the man will give u points for trying he tries to get everyone a fair grade if they tried
ABSOLUTE GOAT! Best STEM prof in all surrounding colleges IMO. Hella chill. Really does his best to make lectures better for students. mix of at-home and in class quizzes. gives accurate back exams, and is accommodating with missed quizzes or needing to reschedule exams. Dont take the other prof Jasmine unless if u want and class avg of 40% on exam
Doc is hands down the best professor I've ever had. Although organ is notoriously hard, Doc goes out of his way to explain every reaction and mechanism in crystal clear language. He truly wants to see students succeed and he is not afraid to provide constructive criticism. If I could go back in time I would take his class time and time again.
