really nice guy, but obviously doesn't have tenure
great guy........
Fuchs should write notes on the board and not just talk, its too hard just trying to write down everything he says. He's a tough grader too, especially if you're not a history major. Boring class.
less writing assignments please
who cares if contractions are not historically appropriate! jeez!
Boing class, really long and a lot of work!! But he's a nice guy
He gives you an outline of the lecture in the beginning of class and then you are expected to catch all the notes as he speaks. The only tests you have are a midterm and a final but you have to read 3 of the 4 books he chooses and write essays on them, his description of what he wants is unclear
He was a great teacher, but he doesn't hand out A's. You really have to work for your grade. Very nice & fun guy, and I enjoyed the class.
ONE OF THE MORE CHALLENGING CLASSES, BUT WELL WORTH IT. DR FUCHS IS EXTREMELY INTERESTING AND SO HOT TOO. ALSO, A TOPIC WORTH LEARNING ABOUT! THUMBS UP FOR STEVE FUCHS!!!
not easy to follow his lectures.gave an outline in the beginning of each class so u could go and look up what ever u miss.very enthusiastic.hard grader.Tests were hard..not easy to study for..no last minute cramming here.u have 2 know ur stuff.papers were easy except for 1.good luck.ur gonna need it
I just love Dr. Fuchs. He's nice, funny, and the fact that he's great looking doesn't hurt, either! He doesn't hand out As, and you really have to work in his classes, but you will learn a lot.
I thought fuchs was a great teacher! everything he talked abut was clear. He gives two papers and no homework. He helps you and keeps you awake if you have him 8 in themorning. He is funny and just is willing to do anything to get you to pass!! i def recomend him!
Boring class & hard grader.Nice guy but def doesnt hand out As. 3 essays, 2 stink b/c you have to read boring books, interview essay is an easy A, midterm and final are hard-major studying required!Nice guy and very helpful.Hard to follow in class and difficult to take notes but you do learn a lot.
* The books you have to read are boring, but he is enthusiatic. His notes aren't hard to follow, he writes outlines of them on the board in the beginning of class. He holds two debates in class that spice things up and makes class more fun and the topic alot more interesting.
great teacher, alot of work but interesting, fair grader, holds two very fun debates which get intense, very good teach
grades papers way too hard but tried really hard to be a nice guy and do the right thing when we hated the books he assigned
great teacher. not hard if you do the work and he is interesting as well. nice to be in class with. debates are fun and help you learn the material. all in all this guy deserves an A !!
Good class, and he is a really cool and funny guy. Tries to make what could be a boring topic more interesting, and makes you see things different from the norm. He is a hard grader, and gives a lot of reading, but as long as you keep up with it and work hard, you will do fine. Definitely have to earn an A in his classes, but it was fun overall.
Nice guy. Class can be boring. Only lecture. little class discussions. He does show movies. Movies are entertaining and I learned a lot from them. A lot of reading to do. Read assignments must be done prior to every class. Assigns 3 books with 2 book reports and 1 debate. Debate was fun and can get heated. If you miss a class you will miss a lot!
Good for not buying too many expensives books... A little boring with lectures, but will let you talk. One way, even though he says one thing, he wants you to think like him. (he looks like he jumpped out of that movie, BOOGIE NIGHTS) Tries to be nice, but is not an easy teacher...
not a bad class. professor fuchs is a nice guy and has a sense of humor. its two papers that have debates to go along with them and a midterm/final. hard grader on the papers. very broad on the midterm/final.
Awesome teacher, super nice and easy going. A lot of reading but its interesting if you actually like history. Tests arent too bad either - study a little and you'll do fine...he doesn't make it that hard.
Prof. Fuchs clearly knows what he is talking about. He makes class interesting and he is very easy to talk to.
grades papers pretty harshly...tells you whats on the tests basically... you need to do ALL the readings so that you can participate in class because he WILL call on you to answer his questions
Fuchs is a hard but fair teacher...if you cant handle the work go back to suffolk
Modern Japan. There is ALOT of reading. There is a midterm, a final, and two papers. the midterm and final are identifications and an essay question. the first paper is based on readings from articles and the last paper is based on 3 books you must read. grading is very fair. very interesing man. good class.
i'm not a fan of history but this class was just really boring. fuch's is very monotoned and you have to read two books and write a paper about each. if you think the first one is bad then good luck with the second!
I wouldn't take him unless desperate or really like history, you have to read two books and write a paper on each, they both suck but the second one is harder, he makes no sense in class, and talks to the class as if we are all historians, and kind of condescending if you express your opinions in class.
I disagree with all these bad comments on here. I'm not a fan of history, but prof. fuchs is a nice guy and the class is not hard at all. you have to read two books that are boring but not that bad and the topics for the papers are really easy, and you can even submit a rough draft and he'll look it over for you. Its easy and it'd take him again.
These kids with the bad comments must be retarted, he is a good professor that actually cares about history and his students, he tries hard to make everything clear and uses examples to explain himself so everyone can understand. Just take notes on what he says and he usually writes the main points on the board. I am taking him twice next semestr
My only wish is that my major would allow me to take more history classes because i would def take Fuchs again. I agree that he was an extremely hard grader and does expect you to know alot; however, he is a great man who really knows what he's talking about and makes everything clear. I would def take him again for a history class if I could.
he lectures the entire time and it's so boring. He gives 2 papers, a midterm, and a final so if you do badly on one you're pretty much screwed. he gives a lot of reading assignments that are hard to understand, and hes a really hard grader. i definitely DO NOT recommend him at all.
not gunna lie hes pretty hard. im a history major and he can be tough. its a lot of reading and you have to read 2 books and write a paper on them. he has s lot of class discussions tho. he not too bad im taking him asgain. hes a kool guy and if u talk he'll like you. if you dont say a word your screwed.
He's a very good teacher and a nice guy. His tests are farely easy providing you go to class and pay attention during review. The only negative i will say is he grades his papers very tough and gives a lot of reading had to read 3 books that were over 200 pages each and one was like 300+. Just make sure u participate on top of this and ur good
One of the most down to earth professors ever. Expects you to put in a lot of effort but this is college so that should be normal Tries to relate to the students and genuinely wants to hear your opinions. YOU MUST SPEAK IN HIS CLASS! If you want a good grade you have to participate! He will know if you read or not and will call you out on it!
He's a nice person but unless you really enjoy history, this class is useless. he thinks everyone in the class is a history major and that we all know exactly what hes talking about. he lectures non-stop and never shuts up. i really wish i didnt take this class..i genuinely hate it.
Fuchs is an awesome guy and an awesome teacher who knows his stuff. I took my first Fuchs class this semester and regret not taking him earlier because he's excellent. Sure, its a ton of reading and you need to do it or your in trouble, but there's no textbooks and if you buy the reading packets with others in class to save money. Would recommend
I do not like history and I struggled but Prof. Fuchs is a great guy! He knows his information and loves teaching it. He opens his class with disscussion and debates which makes the class fun and interesting and not just a lecture! I def recommend him!!!
Possibly the worst proffesor at St. Joe's. I have a great interest in history yet I found this class incredibly useless and difficult. It was more of a political debating class rather than what it was supposed to be. He embarrass' students who he dosen't like. His papers are difficult and he grades them very poorly. I would never take him again!!
Fuchs is an amazing teacher. The class is not an easy A, you have to do the work. Fuchs has no tests except the midterm and final he gives an extremely useful Review sheet and is always willing to proofread a rough copy of a paper due. If you do the work you will earn a good grade. He knows his stuff and clearly loves his job. Take him!
he is a great guy and very funny although he can be a HUGE pain in the ass when it comes to papers he is a critical grader and you cant be lazy. he has a good knowledge of the subject but lacks in public speaking his voice during lectures will go high to low very fast so if you have trouble staying awake in class then dont take him bc you will fail
I'm a history major so I thought a 100-level history class would be a breeze, but Fuchs is a tough grader. There's 2 papers, and lots of readings, and the midterm and final are pretty hard. He is a really nice guy though, but you have to study like a maniac to do well.
He is a great teacher. He gives alot of readings but they really help out, for a history major his handouts i will definately keep. He only has a final and midterm, though there was 2 papers the were each like 3 pages. He really knows his stuff.
Professor Fuchs is a great professor. The subject alone is very boring, but he tries to make it interesting. A fair amount of homework and a lot of reading is given. After getting a first assignment back, read the comments because he expects you to do better on the next one. Not an easy A.
Let us begin. Fuchs is a great professor. He is very fair with grading as he is only critical because he wants us to learn. He gives mostly articles we read and then discuss in class. Lots of reading, but lots of learning as well. His personality makes going to class fun. He gives review sheets for exams. One of the best in the history department.
Awesome!!! Extremely funny and makes class very interesting. He encourages discussion so make sure you read everything before class. Very very nice and is always there to help you. Definitely take his classes.
He gives an obnoxious work load for all his classes whether they are 100 level or 300. He grades ridiculously hard on papers and tests. He lectures from the second the class starts until the second it ends. Sometimes allows for discussion but is very condescending towards students answers and opinions. If you don't keep up in reading will fail
This guy loves to hear himself talk, except for the one guy in my class he's obsessed with. If you answer a question he disregards what you say, and keeps talking (shocker). I do love his test, they give you a chance to do really well. Other than that I don't like him as a professor, and I don't like how he teaches.
Great professor I loved him I hated American history but I actually learned something. His lectures are long but you can keep up. His tests are hard if you don't study but if you do it's easy. Would take the class again if I could. You also don't need a textbook which was awesome!
Really mean to students and never really teaches so much as talks
This Professor really just likes to hear himself talk and tell the class about how good he is at all the things he does. I feel like the feedback was negative, he was telling the students they weren't good enough for being a certain way. I had him for a Transfer class and I really think they should use a different teacher to introduce the college.
Amazing professor. Keeps you up and attentive. No test, only papers. tells you what the final and midterm will be, although questions are vague. DEFINITELY ask questions if you would like to pass. Very nice and understandable. Makes class fun. Homework is on syllabus, mostly readings not hard though. overall great professor
He seems to be very full of himself and this shows in his lectures. He's dismissive of students; if he doesn't care about what they're saying or doesn't agree, he interrupts or ignores them. There are way too many readings. If you don't do them, he knows and will make it a point to embarrass you the next day in front of the class.
I am taking Fuchs for History and Transfer Seminar. He is awesome! If you work hard and come visit him to ask for help, you will do well. He's very sweet and made me stay awake during an7:30 am class. Make sure you read all the homework and participate!! He def grades you on that!
Fuchs really makes you think critically for his US foreign relations class. There's also a lot of readings but it all pays off in the end. The class is heavily discussion based with 7 1-2 page papers and a midterm/final. He doesn't lecture at all and there are no tests and quizzes. Overall would definitely recommend him for all history majors
Professor Fuchs did a great job with American History II. I was a returning adult student in a 7:30 am class with mainly freshmen and had a good time. He is a great orator and lecturer. The class engaged in several debates which were lively and spirited. Every student should know American history, and this was a great class to take with Prof. Fuchs
2nd time around with Fuchs, 1st time was for US Foreign Policy, now for Modern Japan. The guy is a master of the subject and is very well read. Again, a lot of reading but it pays off. This class has a midterm, final and 2 10 page papers. He also gives great advice to ad. ed. students as well. Highly, highly recommend taking him.
I would take him again! Lectures are entirely spoken, but he does provide general outlines for each class. You have to read the stuff he assigns because he'll call on people randomly. There are two debates (1 paper for each), one discussion (1 paper) and an oral history project. Grading is reasonable. He values speaking, so introverts beware!
Professor Fuchs does give a lot of papers, but this is because he does not give many tests. The only tests in his class are midterm and final. Also, he has great lectures.
I was a straight A student, until I took Prof. Fuchs class... Avoid him at all costs!!! he is the worst history professor I have ever had!!! (I've had a lot between Suffolk and St. Joes.) Very unclear in what he wants for papers, uses no notes for lectures, and exams are very difficult.
The hardest 100 level class and online class I have ever taken. He gives 50 pieces of reading material and a whole documentary for one discussion board. You cannot hand in the discussion post and your comments in one day "spread them out". And on top of that he excessively comments and expects a response each time. It's absolutely ridiculous!
poor way of teaching. assigns 30+ pages to read before each class and then just analyzes the reading during class. will also choose on you randomly, and if you dont understand the reading and/or dont understand his language he gets irritated and will make you feel dumb. . 3 papers based on the readings and midterm and final all written.
I have taken Fuchs for SJC100 Oral History, HIS172, HIS312, and now HIS315 and received As in all. If I have taken him this many times, he must be doing something right. Amazing prof, your accepted to read for every class and be able to discuss, he will call on you randomly, so use participation to your advantage, even if it is a general thought!!!
i rather jump off a cliff than take his online class again, if you enjoy your life dont take this class.
Worst online class I have ever taken. I rather jump off a cliff than take his online class again, if you enjoy your life don't take this class.
Very good professor. There is a lot of homework reading and some papers due after. Papers are easy. Midterm and final are straight forward. As long as you read and pay attention to the reading, take notes, and participate in class you should do amazing in the class.
Not good.
Horrible. makes you feel dumb, by calling on you randomly, and if you don't know the answer to his question, he embarrasses you in front of the whole class. he gives 30+ page reading assignments every class and expects you to remember every little detail ab these terribly Boring readings about corn and sugar. worst class and professor iveever taken
I have taken him for two classes, East Asia and Modern Japan. I would not take Modern Japan because the assignments in that class made no sense and I learned nothing from them. However, I appreciate that he doesn't make you buy a textbook and he is very passionate about his field. I had him as an advisor and he is the best one you could have.
Fuchs is awesome! He gives great advice and genuinely wants to help your writing. He makes you think critically and analytically. He lets you give him a draft of your papers beforehand so take advantage of that. Participate and do the reading! There are only 3 papers, a midterm, final, and an oral history paper. Take Fuchs if you can.
Fuchs' ship runs simple: three 2-page essays, one 4-5 page oral report, two exams, and some light readings once a week; no book. Lectures are dry, but straightforward. All the papers have almost nothing to do with his class, we did an essay about fake news and we were learning about the 1800s. Feels like he recycled the prompts from another class.
Doesn't use slides or give any notes just has random lectures that are very difficult to follow. Also talks down to students for no reason and offers little to no help if you have a question. Get ready to read long random articles and watch a video every night since that's how he teaches instead of actually providing a lesson plan.
You need to go to class and participate. He's super nice but you cant do nothing. Do your work and ask him exactly what he wants and you will do fine. Be good about taking detailed notes. Easy assignments.
If you take the class in person the workload was easy but online the workload was a lot.
He made me hate American history- which is the reason why I became a history major. He talks down to his students and thinks his class is the only one in the world. Readings for every class are 20+ pages long about ambiguous topics such as mosquitoes. You are expected to connect these readings to your preexisting knowledge of American history.
"Teaches" American history through assigning extensive 20+ page readings for every class. He does not have any slides but rather lectures at you on his pedestal for an hour and a half. I did not learn about one president or one famous battle in American history but rather about mosquitoes and tobacco. I would never take one of his classes again.
Professor Fuchs is an amazing professor! All around good guy, but does give a lot of work to prepare class to class. One thing about HIS172 is instead of your basic "textbook" history class, he views history from a new perspective and makes it interesting, opening your eyes to pieces you never see. Genuinely cares about his students, very helpful!
His homework assignments were 20+ pages and we'd get 2 every week, I barely had time to read them. He was an extremely tough grader, he was harder on me than my english professor that same semester. If you didn't speak up, your grade would be lowered. I missed one class and my grade dropped because of it even though you're allowed 2 absences.
Fuchs is really not very nice, and he tries to make you feel dumb every chance that he gets. Insane amount of reading as well.
I don't enjoy history classes, but Fuchs made it enjoyable honestly. We had to read a lot, but if you skim the reading you're fine. I had three 2 page papers and a midterm/final. All assignments were fair and he tells you exactly what he is looking for. Never any surprises. Make sure you participate because it will help your grade big time.
Overall really nice and great professor. Papers are two pages and gives out very clear directions. Midterm is written but he gives you a heads up on what to go over and gives part of midterm as a take home. Class is based on what you read so be prepared to have open discussions. Would 100% take a class with him again.
All readings he gives you on are on canvas. Tries to make history enjoyable. He does pick on people to talk in class. But if you participate you'll get a 100 on participation. Only three papers which he explains throughly. Would 100% take him again.
This class probably has to be the worst class I've ever taken at this college. Prof Fuchs is rude, he constantly thinks that you are texting and playing on your computer if you're taking notes (which is my preference). you HAVE to participate and do the work. His essays are too critical and his assignments are too long, if you work it is hard.
Prof Fuchs is a professor that doesn't give a lot of work. He does give a lot of readings but SKIM IT! Just know the basis of what the reading is about. If you only say one thing the whole semester he will notice and give you a bad participation grade. For papers he only gives 3. Two of them are 3 pages double spaced and 1 is 2 pages double spaced.
at first i didnt mind him but then he became very rude after the midterm. participation is mandatory even if you have the worst anxiety like i do. if you dont participate at least once every class he will give you a terrible participation grade. gave half the class a 0 in participation bc we use our laptops even tho we are taking notes
I am a history major who made the Dean's list almost every semester until I got this professor. His classes are entirely reading based, and there is a ludicrous amount of reading, even for 300 level classes, to the point where if you have to work, you will have no time to read them between school and work. Papers in his class are based on readings.
Lots of reading if you leave it for the night before class. For essays, follow the instructions exactly as written and you will do well. Raise your hand and attempt to answer some questions instead of getting asked a question that you don't have an answer for. As long as you take good notes on paper, and don't touch your phone, you'll be fine!
very strict guy. given a midterm, final, and 3 papers, so if you mess up on one of them, you're basically screwed. AN obsurd amount of reading needed to do in the short amount of time.he must think hes the only professor at this school with all the work he gives us. i dont recommend him because you will evidentally regret doing so. L man.
I took this class for my prereq. We have to go back to the discussion boards multiple times a week. If we don't then you get 25 points taken off your grade. That is for just doing your posts in one day. He assigns a decent amount of readings and movies/documentaries for us to watch. His comments are very backhanded and rude.
I feel like you either love him or you hate him. He is one of those teachers that will call on you randomly, so be ready for that. He does really like what he teaches though and it shows. Lots of reading for homework but sometimes it was a podcast that could be listened to on the drive to class. I liked him but I get why others do not.
The rudest professor I have ever worked with. His comments and edits on assignments are shallow and degrading. Makes you feel like you are less than him and worthless, I would never ever ever recommended him or any of his classes as they have literally made me so upset. Terrible.
Hardest grader, not an easy class online with him.
easy class papers are easy and so are the tests. if you do the work youll do fine.
He is an extremely tough grader. If you do not follow his exact criteria you will not do well. The amount of work he assigns for an online class is absurd. He doesn't care that you may have other classes or a job. He leaves backhanded comments on discussion posts. One of the worst I've had at St. Joes. Avoid him if you can.
He is a good guy. The class consists of 3 papers that can be handed in early for feedback, a midterm, and a final. Everything is 45% of your grade. Midterm and Final are short responses which are kinda difficult. There's homework each day which consists of reading or a podcast. The homework is not graded but be prepared to get randomly called on.
Course is extremely boring, and comments on discussions are rude and pretentious. This is not a hard course, but what makes it hard is the unbelievably boring sources he uses, including mainly long podcasts. If you can tough through the word vomit from the podcasts and effectively skim through the attached readings, it will be easy.
Tough grader, lots of criticism. Expects you to listen to long podcasts. No notes or anything on the board, you have to quickly write and he's speaking to get information.
Assigns readings to be read before every class; they are extremely long and hard to understand. During the discussions in class, he asks precise questions and calls on you even if you don't have your hand raised. He gets annoyed if you don't know the answer to the question and automatically assumes you didn't read.
Vets home is amazing steve on the other hand not so much very passive agressive
Tough grader, but using unstuckstudy and staying on top of the heavy workload can make this class manageable. Avoid distractions and focus on meeting the professor's specific criteria.
I have Professor Fuchs for an online course this semester. There are weekly discussions due each Sunday. It's important that you post on more than one day or points are taken off. He also states that you must respond to a minimum of three classmates but takes away points when you only respond to three. an extremely tough grader on all assignments.
The worst online class I've ever taken. Discussions are essentially a 2-3 page paper per week and you have to reply twice. You are not allowed to do it on the same day, so you have to submit a response three times a week. The kicker is that he “recommends” you post MORE than 3. He will destroy your grade if you don't. Final is AWFUL. DO NOT TAKE.
He told our class he was sick of AI nonsense so he built his classes around it. He assigned readings for every class. We were responsible to read the readings on our own, and come to class ready to discuss everything. Class participation is huge. We had 4 assignments, a midterm, a final, and an oral presentation. If you do the work, you will be ok
Very good professor who gives helpful feedback and is fair with grading. The class includes on-campus and off-campus work with volunteering and simple assignments based on that experience. Just turn work in on time since late penalties apply. Participation matters, and the long class can be boring.
