Barley taught, but had easier tests than other professors. Allows a notecard on the tests.
TAKE HIM! Great professor! His tests are easy! Extra credit throughout the semester as well! Much easier than Olsen. Class is composed of lecturers and sometimes group activities. There is a team project but it is not as in depth or challenging as other teachers. I had the 3 hour class and he will usually let people out 30 min early or so.
Lectures are boring and didn't really learn anything, skips through ppt slides, unclear grading. Had to read the chapters to study for the exams. Graded group assignments harshly. No guidance on group assignments or topics to study for exams. Has in class group assignments as well. Pretty nice guy but is not a good professor.
Prof. Gaffen gives real life examples to help the class understand his lectures. I was able to get a B w/o reading the book, but I made sure to pay attn to his lectures. Lectures can get a little confusing bc he does skip slides, but that's under the assumption that we all have read beforehand. He will go over anything that needs clarification.
Do not take this course with him
7pm class, i was tired. I read on my own, skipped a few classes, some of the questions on the test are tricky/confusing. its not hard or bad, put the ppt used to kill me. he is approachable and answered questions. I hated the in class group projects. and his videos are from the 60s. learn smart too much work for 1 point.
This was a boring class. There was no incentive to show up for class because all he did was read from the PowerPoint. The tests were way harder than they should have been. I attended almost every class, read the chapters, studied the PowerPoints and still struggled with the tests. I don't recommend taking this class.
Here's the goods: (1) Takes role first day of class only (2) Homework and quizzes are easy and can all be taken at home on computer. (3) Tests are difficult and has a lot of material from his presentations on it (4) Class was literally half full at most by 3rd week of class and completely full on finals(no role). (5) 3 Exams: 2-Mid terms, 1-Final
VERY LOW POINTS, no curve, hard exams. The whole semester is based off of 100 points. Material is easy, but the exams are tricky.
Interesting guy but lectures are long and insanely boring. Exams are somewhat tricky. Asks questions on random facts mentioned in a lecture. Learn Smarts and Quizzes due weekly. Offers extra credit opportunities. Not difficult to pass, but difficult to get an A. Best way to study for exams is to go over Learn Smarts.
Crazy hard tests. I'm an A student and I failed both midterms (still passed with a B- though). Lectures are boring and he uses all 3 hours and he never prepares before. Makes you buy that million dollar Mcgraw Hill connect code. Lots of HW and quizzes. I asked him lots of questions about the quizzes and he usually said "IDK". NOT HELPFUL.
Gaffen is a very knowledgeable and caring professor. I had a personal matter come up during the semester and he worked with me when I was no longer able to attend lectures. He met with me outside of class, responded to emails and was very understanding. The first test is very easy, the other tests are quite challenging. Overall, a good professor
Gaffen is a super nice, friendly guy. He shows you articles of current events and you discuss them for most of class. Grade is a semester long group project where you present about every other class on your marketing plan for a product you make up with your group. Textbook isn't necessary. Just pick your group well, thats your grade basically
Nice and very caring guy, has a passion in marketing, but his lectures are incredibly boring. He shows articles of how marketing is applied, shows a few videos, then uses the PowerPoint from the book company. Quizzes are online, Learn Smarts due 10 min before class. Exams are very challenging. Participate in Marketing Experiments for EC.
He is a GREAT guy, but not a good professor. Just reads off the slides, doesn't explain anything. He is lost himself on most of the material. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. Got D's on first 2 test, probably a C on final, ended with a B. Learnsmarts & quizzes online for every chapter. Lecture is pointless, but go so he sees you are trying. BUY THE BOOK!!!
Worst class I've taken at state, do not take him! Take any other teacher. Retaking the class this semester
Every Marketing professor has decided to make this class impossible, so just be prepared for that. The material isn't hard, tests are all tricky, lots of homework and lectures weren't needed to pass. I went to every lecture because I learned real-world things and I enjoyed him. Just get ready for a not easy B/B- if you try REALLY hard.
Great guy super knowledgeable in marketing field in the real world. Class isn't super boring but study the textbook more than the powerpoint. Very doable class if you try a little!
Steve is ammmmaaaazzzzzzing! He dies have tricky test tho.
His class is okay, nothing too hard. If you read the book and do the homework you should be able to get good grades on the tests. Attendance is not mandatory so you won't lose points if you don't go.
The worst professor ever. He does not teach well. His lectures are boring, and he reads the textbook. Exam questions are based on lectures, videos, and the things that he mentions in the class. He should not be teaching.
Lectures are extremely boring and he just reads off slides and gives examples that aren't relevant to the tests. Study learn smarts and you'll be fine.
Great professor! I have been learning a lot from his lectures. His unparalleled teaching experience would give us the most insightful real world applications since he has experience working in Marketing field. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED this class with Prof. Gaffen. He is extremely passionate and caring his students.
He is very knowledgeable and has a lot of interesting information to share about marketing. Attendance is not mandatory but there are some questions on the 3 exams concerning specific details about videos hell show during class that you have to pay attention to get. Quick weekly LearnSmart and quiz assignments.
Gaffen is a nice man but his class can be boring. If you go to class, you'll listen to 3 hours of lecture and watch videos. I did my homework(from other classes) as he lectured. As for assignments, you have learnsmarts, online quizzes, and 3 exams. I recommend that you do the marketing experiment that is mentioned in class or in the syllabus.
This class is mainly homework assignments and exams. Do the extra credit marketing surveys. The topics seem easy when you study them, but the exams are tricky. I got Cs and an F on my exams, but still managed to get a B+ final grade. Do all of the hw! It's easy and will help your grade. Hw is time consuming. Lectures sometimes go off-topic.
Gaffen is super nice guy, his lectures are super interesting. you definitely do not need to show up for classes but you'll be missing out. about 4/50 questions are about lecture so it would be good for those extra points. Marketing is straightforward and Gaffen makes it interesting.
Classes were not mandatory to attend, but you will miss out on a few exam questions, which isn't TOO big of a deal. He offers EC which is super easy so DO THEM! Will help out. There are HW/quizzes for each chapter (online) which aren't too difficult and will help your grade so don't miss them. Exams weren't horrible but not the easiest
Only took professor Gaffen for the reason it was the only class available. The tests are hard, the lectures are worthless, and did not learn anything about marketing.
The best choice for this course. Very nice professor. His lecture is interesting. Easy homework and quizzes all online. 3 exams most questions similar with ungraded quizzes. U just need to practice on them and other sample questions. Easily u can get A. Extra credit available, attendance is not mandatory. Overall for me it was very easy class.
TAKE HIM!! He is such a great professor and really cares for students. HE gives extra credit options so do it! Only three exams and you have some homework assignments which are very easy. I advise you purchasing the book as that is where all the questions came from. I would advise going to class and he shows videos but otherwise it is not needed.
My overall opinion on this professor and BA -370 he taught so far is awful. The lecture is poor & just reads off PowerPoint slides. If you email him worried about your grade, he will ignore it. You essentially have to teach your self & read the book. The practice quizzes are not enough. Not nearly as difficult as his test questions.
Professor Gaffen is a chill guy and a good professor. He knows his stuff and I would definitely take him again
Exams are not purely based on lectures, read the book. Tests are moderate. You are only graded by exams (78% of grade) and homework (22.5% of grade). 4% extra credit available from completing two out of class lab participations, plus the 0.50% available from homework. His lectures can be a bit dull. Doesn't help I had him for the 3hr class.
To be honest, I could have gotten a B+ in the class but I was taking his class when our classes transitioned to online for the pandemic. So it was difficult to study for the last exam and didn't do so well. I thought I got a lower grade, but how he calculates things let me get a C+. A lot of my friends say Gaffen is better and I agree
HE DOES NOT CARE. ITS THAT SIMPLE. HE DOSENT CARE, HE ISN'T HELPFUL. IM NOT LEARNING.
For this class you will have 3 exams which gonna be 78% of your grades, 22.5% of your grades on quizzes and assignments. Exam will be 50 multiple choice in 50 mins, the questions are long with 5 choices which means 1 min per question only enough to let you read through the question. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMEND
This guy does not write or make one thing from his class. Anybody could teach his class. That being said, he is a nice guy, very sensible but a lazy professor. Everything graded comes from the book. Quizzes don't look anything like the test but the practice quizzes are identical (makes no sense). EASY A
He relies too much on the online book. Quizzes and exams are proctored. They are very hard. At the end I stopped going to class, it doesn't help. What helps is to do the nongraded practice quizzes. Goodluck.
This class was literally just average. 3 exams, Connect hw & quizzes on every chapter, and 4% extra credit boost. He uses Proctorio. I didn't attend class enough to know if he's nice but his lectures were boring (he just read off his lecture slides), so I just read the chapters
Hes mad chill if anyone roasts him dont listen at all. He is super cool and caring his tests are so clear and based off the book the only problem is it is application based multiple choice so you have to use your brain beyond definition memorization. Very tests heavy though if u suck at tests dont take him
Mktg479 Absolute waste of money taking this professor. He never teaches but chooses to play poorly streamed videos with such poor audio quality it is impossible to understand. You could get a better education on youtube. Not to mention you will be expected to present every week with no guidelines or outlines given by the prof. Insanely bad.
Hard grader and wants things not mentioned.
Probably one of the hardest teachers here at State. So many assignments! Try to take it with someone else! Highly recommend not taking this instructor. He is also a pretty tough grader.
Lectures are him reading from textbook/PP slides, playing youtube vids of other profs, &talking about In-n-Out & how rich his friends are. Doesn't actually answer student questions. Just speculates & tells you to wait or look it up. Uses only the publisher's material, ANYONE could teach this class. Maybe he's a nice guy but he isn't a good teacher.
Honestly the worst professor ever. Very lecture heavy & there is a smartbook assignment for each chapter due before class. The tests are about 5 chapters and there are quizzes due with normally 2-3 weeks to take them. This class revolves around a lot of reading & studying. Also he is the worst when it comes to technical problems with proctorio.
Gaffen is the worst teacher I've had in college. Changes class syllabus and still doesn't adhere to it. Gives pop quizzes at any time during the semester which cannot increase your grade, only decrease it. Pop quiz scores range from -2 to 0. When Proctorio (spyware) glitches you from taking a test, Gaffen will not care and you may get a zero on it.
You will lean NOTHING that is "taught" by Gaffen. This course is fully self taught (quizzes and smart books), then you sit in lectures during the week where he talks about his life. He doesn't even make his own exams, just uses MH exams. If you are cool with self teaching/self test taking, this is the course for you. Otherwise, STAY AWAY!
Read the textbook, his lectures don't help. Do the ungraded practice quizzes and the recharges. Other than that, the classwork is straightforward.
This class is an absolute scam. Steven Gaffen's class is worse than watching paint dry. The exams are all Mcgraw Hill questions taken from the ungraded practice quizzes. The class meetings consist of a few PPT slides of textbook diagrams and the rest is him just talking about irrelevant things and ads cutout from magazines. Take someone else.
This class is whatever. Gaffen's lectures are useless, all test questions are directly from the book and McGraw Hill Connect. Do the ungraded practice quizzes repeatedly because the questions are identical to the tests. He's not a good professor by any means, but his class isn't hard either. Never showed up to class and ended with an A.
Lectures were useless, never felt the need to come to class. 90% of the exam questions are pulled directly from the ungraded practice quizzes, 10% of questions were from things he discussed in class. Easy class if you grind out the practice quizzes and self-study, the class material isn't hard. Assignments were smartbooks and connect quizzes.
Lectures aren't helpful but attendance isn't mandatory. Exam questions are all McGraw Hill questions from the practice quizzes. Easy to study for and easy material. He's super nice and wants his students to do well. Probably one of the easiest profs I've ever had, especially compared to other BA370 profs.
Easy class. Read the textbook and you don't have to go to lecture. Do the practice quizzes a few times before the exams. Prof. Gaffen cares about his students, he cares about marketing, but he's just so.... boring. If you only need this class b/c it's a prereq take it. If you're a marketing major, look for another prof, you will be uninspired.
Gaffen's lectures are basically kinda useless. The semester starts with 60 kids in the class room and then halfway through there's like 15 people, so lectures aren't mandatory, or helpful. Tests are the material from the practice quizzes from McGraw Hill, so practice those a bunch. HW isn't too bad, like 6 quizzes due everyone month-ish. He's eh.
The lectures are useless. They don't help explain the concepts or add anything. l was hoping reading the book would help with the quizzes but it seems like he picks the most obscure details to ask about. You have to teach the concepts to yourself. Avoid this online class.
this professor is useless, the exam is rely on McGraw hill, even with that the question on the exam gets mixed or add it to make the exam fail, terrible communication, lame lectures, and old school, I'm a marketing major and I have to retake this class because of Geffen. The only good thing about is that he drops the lowest quiz and assignment.
Lectures were him reading off the slides 90% of the time. He threw in one or two real life examples, and showed us a video. Lectures not mandatory. First class has lecture hall filled, then amount of students decreases. HW, quizzes, exams, are all based on McGraw Hill. Just read the textbook and take the practice quizzes, and show up one exam day.
I havent attended a single lecture. Its basically a self learning class. Theres a LOT of reading and the (3) exams are worth 78% of your grade. If you arent the best self learner, I dont recommend this class because its easy to BS. That being said, you could BS this class in terms of HW/quizzes, but come exam time, youll forsure get screwed.
The class is very straightforward. All the tests, quizzes, and homework are from the publisher. As long as you read and take notes on the textbook, and do the "Ungraded Practice" on canvas (same questions you will see on test). His lectures are pointless, as long as you read textbook and take notes you can do fine.
Easy to pass class. No one really goes after the first couple weeks, as all quizzes and HW is online based on McGraw Hill. Tests are in person online based on the Practice quizzes. Really straightforward class, although I feel Gaffen can just be too boring. Would have learned more if it wasn't so monotonous and tedious. average class
attendance: not mandatory and ungraded ... textbook: uses McGraw Hill Connect ... grading: majority of points will come from 3 exams ... comments: really easy course, just use the 'Ungraded Practice' since the bulk of the exam is made from that question bank. Easy pass
Gaffen is a good professor don't get me wrong, he teaches through the book. However the exams are so hard. All conceptual. I don't have a good grade in this class, and I usually do great. For some reason this class is just hard. definitely do the practice quizzes. Im just going to take an L in this class.
3 exams where q's are from ungraded practice quizzes. Got an A- and went to like 5 classes total. Just study the ungraded practice, and quizzes to do well on the tests. Online surveys to earn extra credit! Do all 4 it raised my grade 4% at the end. Smartbook q's are on quizlet and 1 is due weekly. Drops 1 smartbook/quiz at end. Not time consuming
If you're just trying to check off BA370, take Gaffen. If you genuinely want to learn marketing, DON'T. Only graded on smartbook assignments & exams (which are textbook-based). Lectures echo the textbook, so no one went to class. Easy class to pass if you read the textbook & do the ungraded practice, but I didn't rly LEARN marketing at all :(
Professor Gaffen gave us students extra attendance credits several times, which many students didn't know about it because most students stopped attending his classes. He gave us credit when attending students was low. Thank you, Gaffen.
My dad died in the first week of the SP23 semester. I emailed Gaffen to ask if I could have the notes for that week since I was not going to school. He told me to ask a classmate for notes and to send him proof that my dad died. No condolences, & no need to ask me for proof if he wasn't even gonna give me the notes.
Took this class and it was super chill. Never showed up for class once and still passed pretty easily. All you have to worry about is the Smartbooks and Exams really. The exams are pretty content heavy with 5-6 Chapters each. I literally never read the text and just went through the ungraded practices quizes a bunch of times before the exam. Breezy
80% of your grade will be in 3 exams. The rest split between HW and Quiz on Smartbook, each point of which is worth 1%. Class is not mandatory. You can get an additional 4% in extra credit from doing marketing surveys. It's doable, but do good on exam. Its hella hard, with 6 chapters condensed into 26 questions. Doable but easy to fail honestly...
It's an easy class, most people don't go. Just use the ungraded practice exams to study for the exams. Doesn't teach much in class, besides reading off the McGraw Hill powerpoint slides that he post on the canvas page. If you're looking to just past the class because you need to, then this class works
I didn't attend lectures after the first exam and still did well in the class by studying the textbook and ungraded practices. Lectures were very dull, going over the textbook content at a superficial level with half of the time spent watching the professor look through his emails to find videos he wanted to present.
Never went to a single lecture. The entire class is graded through McGraw Hill and is out of 100 pts so every pt counts with a chance at 4 EC pts. 3 exams make up 80% of your grade. Do every chapter ungraded practice test 5-6 times ea. Exams pull from same Q bank. Guaranteed you will see the same Qs on exam. Class is self-taught but a very easy B.
Super easy class. I took the first exam and barely passed because I studied the textbook. That was a mistake, study the practice quizzes and you will be fine. All I did was make a quizlet of the practice quizzes and took the practice quizzes 15-20 times each chapter. I got a 94% on the next exam when I did this. I barely went to class.
Take another Prof if possible! He changed last exam format and everyone I know failed. The textbook and practice quizzes didn't even help, I spent studying 1 whole day for 6 chapters. NO CURVE! Reads off textbook word for word in a monotone tedious voice. Half the class is spent trying to browse through his email for videos that aren't relevant.
This teacher is horrible he reads off slides that just include videos and he talks about random pointless stuff in class and the makes the test worth 80% of your grade. Everyone failed the final, the class average was 56 and he didn't curve it at all. The test had nothing to do with the practice tests he gives us. He doesnt care about his students
He changed the final exam last second and the average was a 56 no curve. Lots of people had their grades wrecked highest exam grade was 80
Professor gaffen is an absolute joke. Wastes time in lecture looking at emails or reading textbook chapters we already read instead of expanding on concepts. Changed the format of the final exam without warning and mocked the class after seeing the average. He cannot be compromised with and offers little or no help outside of class. just dont.
The days of the practice quizzes are over. He stuck to the script for the first test but I noticed that he started to deviate during the second exam, and it showed because the class average for the test was lower than the first. For the last exam he went off the rails and completely changed the questions and he clearly wrote them out. Avoid
Went to almost every class and still only got a 58 on the final which dropped me from an A to B. I don't understand why he'd deviate from what he did for the first two exams and on top of that not curve the grade even though the average was an F. On top of all of this, his lectures were just him reading off the textbook and didn't help on the final
Ok, teacher but he has no social awareness my class had a test on Valentine's Day in the computer lab at 7 pm.
Not a good lecturer. Rambles a lot. Removed the practice questions on McGraw hill, even though he rewrote the test questions himself. Why he would want to remove such a valuable study resource? Each lecture he would repeat things he taught from the lecture prior. Slides are bad.
This class is more about reading riddles and remembering minute details from textbook examples than knowing marketing. Steve needs a reality check.
He's actually one of the worst professors I've ever had since I've started college. He removed the practice quizzes, which is a nice way to study for his exams, since the actual quizzes we're required to take have NOTHING to do with the exam. On our first exam, SOME people got a curve and others for some reason. His lectures also have no substance.
His course revolves ONLY on the textbook. You'd do well to study the textbook and lectures are pretty much useless. He paraphrases the textbook and the exams are ridiculously unfair, be sure to memorize small details of the textbook if you want to pass the class.
AVOID THIS TEACHER!!!! He reads straight off of the slides for lectures and just goes over what we already read for homework so no one shows up for class. He made his own questions for the tests and they all suck (terribly worded and purposely tricky), the highest grade on the last test was a B+ and the average was a D+. HEED MY WARNINGS
He seems nice, but his tests are impossible. Last semester, we had to watch 8 20 minute youtube videos and one of the questions was a quote from one video and he asked the name of the speaker who said it. He mumbles during his lectures. He asked us what helped us study for the first test and when we said practice quizzes, he turned them off.
Pray Pray Pray to god, that you pass this class. 1 midterm, 1 final exam. The professor explains about In & Out food. The lecture could have been a little better. Questions will be answered but changed to a different topic. The class was a very tough. As a learning disability student he was very tough, this is a SELF LEARNING CLASS. Good luck.
AWFUL. Everything you read about him is true. I thought people were dramatic, but they weren't. He gave us access to the practice quizzes, and after the first exam decided to take them away because everyone scored "too high" (the average was a 60%). He claims not to curve. He's super salty about people not attending, but no attendance is taken. RUN
He seems like a nice enough person but the tests are ridiculous. Not tested on any concepts that you learn, only random facts that you would never remember on your own. I am a straight-A student, and I am PRAYING for a B in this class but I don't know if I will get it. Take any other professor if you can
He doesn't care about his students. The tests are confusing on purpose and he writes all of the questions himself but they aren't based on the actual marketing concepts from the textbook. He's bitter about low attendance in his lectures so he uses super specific questions about videos in class. Removed the practice quizzes on McGrawHill.
stay away from this proffesor. his class is 78% test and 22% hw and quizzes. all he does is read off power points so his lectures are pretty much useless. the material isn't hard at all, but the way he words questions on exams is absurd. the average on the final was a 50% and he didn't curve it. do not take him!!!
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! His lectures are so boring and he will put random facts about random stores he mentioned on the exam. His exams also made no sense. I attended every single class, studied hard, and still got a 76% in the class. If you care about your mental health whatever you do, do not take him.
gaffen does not care about the success of his students whatsoever. he is hell-bent on making SIMPLE marketing concepts as difficult and confusing as possible on exams just bc he's mad no one shows up to class. you aren't tested on your actual understanding of marketing, but on useless minute details/quotes discussed during lecture. don't take him!!
This class is beyond lame. Gaffen is the first professor I've ever had who's actually been hostile towards students studying for exams. He removed the ungraded practice quizzes that every other class has enabled to help study. Out of the 228 students who took exam 2, the high score was an 88%... Oh, and there is zero curve in the class. Avoid!!
I would not take this class. The lectures and textbook do not really help, so the class just feels a bit pointless.
Don't take this POS professor. His goal is to fail you and his tests DO NOT reflect his teaching (which btw is terrible and off topic). He makes more sure you don't cheat rather than making sure you can pass. Test averages are 60%
This professor doesn't care about you in any way. The class averages for all 3 exams ranged from 55-70%. He doesn't curve and drops 1 assignment and 1 quiz, which in total doesn't do more than a 1-2% difference to your grade. His test questions are like riddles, you had to decipher what he's trying to ask you before you can answer the question. RUN
terrible. i got my first C in this class. i regret everything.
This semester's class was unexpectedly tough, even more so than BA 323. While Professor Gaffen is excellent, the tests didn't match the course material well, making it hard to show my understanding. I think aligning tests closer to what we learn and adding more feedback opportunities could enhance the learning experience for future students.
Always been an A and B student and this was my first ever C. Gaffens lectures are often off-topic and useless when it comes to the test. Exam questions don't come anywhere close to the McGraw-Hill Connect homework assignments and are a complete curveball. Exam averages came out to anywhere between 55-65% for the 3 exams that make your grade. AVOID
Exam questions are unfair and have nothing to do with the notes. The questions often have nothing to do with the slides from class, and you have to write down anything he says since it can be on the exam. He gives the impression he wants his students to do poorly since after a 68% average on Exam1 he took away the practice exams. No way to prepare.
If you can take someone else for marketing do it because Gaffen does not want you to succeed. He rewrote all the exam questions to be confusing with ambiguous wording, averages are in the 50-60s range and he doesn't curve. He's the type to brag about how difficult it is to pass his class and does not lecture well
Gaffen is an old soul but he is completely washed at teaching. I'm pretty sure the marketing dept is on his headtop because his final just got curved for the first time in history. His test questions are heinous, don't take him if you can but if he starts curving tests you might have a chance.
His class is super boring that to be honest at some point it seems ridiculous to keep going since he doesn't teach you at all, what I did to study was reading the book and watch to his videos in class, but his tests are hard
Just really really bad. Very boring, and Im a marketing major so this should be interesting to me. It wasn't, it was so boring that I dropped the class due to no motivation to study. Very unclear tests with weird questions.
I was very close to failing this class but he curved at the end so I barely managed to pass. There were 3 midterms, no discussion boards, quizzes and homework that were easy to complete. The midterms were very difficult I failed each time, but there was extra credit that went towards your grade so that helped. I wouldn't take this professor again!
Terrible. Marketing is literally my major and I HATED this class so much that i withdrew due to unclear grading, terrible and boring lectures, and awful exams. Do not take him.
Listened to advice of the reviews and didn't show up to a single class because of how useless his lectures were. If u have to take this class / there are no options don't show up to lectures and study smart books HEAVY. even doing that I never got higher then a c on every exam BEING IN THE 90th PERCENTILE. He randomly curved 10% bc everyone failed
we just had our first exam. I never go to class cus he just reads the textbook the whole time. Lots of people failed this exam. I got one of the highest grades in the class and I studied SO hard. My advice is to read through every chapter in the textbook. Take notes and study HARD. You'll be fine if you rly read the chapters just put in the work
Honestly if you can take anyone else just take them. Olsen is better overall.
To pass the class, you must review the proctored practice quizzes; the tests are based on those. He gives extra credit, but it's only 4%, and a curve isn't guaranteed unless he gets enough complaints. He's so boring. Don't go to class. Just download the ppt slides, and whatever he says in class is on there. If you can, take a different professor
BAD DONT EVER TAKE IT!!
Simply put hes just not a good professor. His lectures are pointless because he just reads off the textbook. 3 tests that essentially determine your entire grade so just study for those. Hell have smartbooks due but those are based on completion. If you want an easy grade take him, if you want to actually learn dont take him. Bad all around tbh
If he is your last option for this course you'll be okay! I was worried since the reviews were bad but if you really study you'll be fine and i never studied until this class. I went to A plus and def helped me pass. Making flashcards with vocab from each chapter including examples helped so much best way i was able to study the material Good luck!
He just reads off his slides which he gets straight from the textbook. I stopped going to his lectures after the first test because it was a waste of time. Tests are worth 78% of your grade where the class avg is between C- and D. Study the SmartBook and quizzes and you'll pass, but be prepared to learn on your own. The book is your teacher here.
Do your smarbooks and extra credits, it will literally make or break your grade.
AWEFUL his smart books assignments and quizzes are ONLY 22% OF THE TOAL GRADE AND THE 3 EXAMS ARE 78% OF THE TOTAL GRADE. His lecture literally only the textbook and he shows a couple you tube videos. HE EXPECTS YOU TO KNOW HOW TO APPLY THEM TO REAL LIFE SCENERIOS BUT NEVER PROVIDES EXAMPLES. HE DOESNT CURVE EXAMS, REVIEW, OR CHEAT SHEET.
5% EXTRA CREDIT(half a letter grade)- marketing surveys. DO THEM! Exams are hard but I aced them by flash carding the definitions and reading the book. I skipped CLASS AND GOT AN A. just ask your classmates for the YouTube video HE ASK on exam. SMARTBOOK/PROCTORED QUIZES --use chat gpt on your phone to take a picture of it/ diff laptop. I GOT AN A!
Professor Gaffen is overall a decent teacher, all the bad reviews are from students who chose not to attend lecture. Overall not a very hard class you just need to understand how the material works. Tests can be a bit tricky. All these lazy people chose to not attend and most likely didn't do the reading either. They deserve the grades they got.
My exam grades were 58%, 58%, 62%. He hasn't curved the grades and now I have to retake this class. His test questions are off topic, and rather than testing on your knowledge of Marketing, he asks minute detail extremely specific class based questions. That's why class average is low and ppl fail, his test questions are riddles. RUN!
Not a good professor, and if you can please take someone else. You can tell when a professor actually cares about their students and wants to see their students succeed (he wasn't one of those). He just reads off of a powerpoint for his lessons and all of the content is on the book, so just read and study off the book. Also study the smartbooks.
This professor is either too busy or disengaged. When emailing with questions, I assume professors have multiple classes, so my emails aren't specific. However, he mistakenly confused me with another student twice and gave wrong info. He's strict, unapproachable, and offers no extra credit. Avoid MKTG371 if possible.
A lot of these reviews are outdated, everything is integrated in Connect and what's on the assignments are on the test. However, he wants you to come to his lectures, and he is petty about it. Test question asking the last name of a random speaker he showed you in class petty. He's fine as a last resort, but try to take someone else if you can.
Definitely avoid this professor if you can - his lectures are dry and his exams are notoriously difficult, with unclear questions that have little to do with the material. However, using Unstuck study and the textbook helped me scrape by with a decent grade.
Took his class last semester and had a rough time. While the content of the class wasn't difficult to understand, the homework being tedious and worth very little points, and the oddly difficult exams with questions about random people in a video we watched weeks before was ridiculous. He acted friendly, but didn't seem to care. Avoid if you can.
I've attended every single lecture, have taken notes, completed all homework assignments, completed all quizzes, studied the textbook, studied Sharpen, made flashcards and still received a D on the first exam. Now my grade is a D and I need a 75 to pass as a marketing major. very discouraging as a student. Lectures are not helpful to the exam!!
Do a lot of studying on the homework and quizzes, you'll get more use from that than any of his lectures. He still makes you go to the lectures though because he randomly names people from videos watched at the lecture so if you have a friend or gc, make sure to ask or have some give the video title that was watched in the lecture if you don't come
These reviews make Gaffen seem like a bad guy when he's absolutely not. He is a great professor with interesting lectures. You can tell he loves to teach and gives great examples. Just actually go to class and take notes on Hw and lecture and you'll pass. Dont be discouraged by his rating, I was at first, but the class is actually interesting.
This professor is consistently on a power trip. His guidelines for assignments are vague yet when you do not meet expectations you can typically expect no more than a 50% on any given assignment. On top of this all online communications with this professor felt rude and short. My first and only tip is to avoid this professor at all costs.
This guy does not want you to succeed. He is very liberal and enjoys pushing those messages in class, rather than helping you learn the information. He also posts slides on canvas that are not the ones he uses in class, out of spite I guess.
This teacher is petty. The class is low quality as well. On the exams, they are so lazy that you will get multiple of the same question on the exam. Very unimpressed that by SDSU for having such poor quality teaching staff.
These reviews are way too harsh. He is a nice professor and you can tell he really enjoys what he teaches. Tests are 78% of the grade, but they are relatively easy as long as you read the book and study the quizzes. His lectures can be boring at times and there is a lot of information, but this class is manageable overall.
Awful, this professor completely relies on McGraw Hill connect for all material and grading, zero originality. This course could be taught independently, but the professor implements questions regarding the name of a presenter from a video watched in class, very petty. The good reviews on here are most likely from his account or his TAs accounts.
i don't know how you can take something as simple as marketing and turn it into rocket science. by the end of the semester there was like 20 ppl attending what's supposed to be a full class lecture. AVOID! RUNNN!! this prof does NOT care about students, boring irrelevant lectures and the tests are like solving riddles. SDSU should be ashamed!!!
personally, i feel bad for all the negative reviews. he is definitely one of those teachers who require you to read the textbook because his quizzes and exams are pulled directly from mcgraw-hill. if you think you can do well in a class that requires you to read teach yourself sometimes, this is an easy class to take!
This class is fine, but you teach yourself. Extremely textbook-heavy. McGraw-Hill recharge will help. I stopped showing up to class because he would go over the homework I had just done, so it was pointless to me unless you have questions. I could have gotten higher than a B, but the exams can be confusing, making you second-guess yourself.
Nice guy, awful professor. Lectures are useless, tests are ridiculously unpredictable and petty, class is boring and dry. Overall he doesn't really teach anything, you are forced to learn everything on your own. By far one of the worst professors in campus, avoid him at all costs.
Laughably terrible class with 0 passion. Its two hours of him rambling over old powerpoints. Attendance is not mandatory but he will include niche questions from videos he plays in class. You notice less and less people show up to his class and you can tell it really offends him. It is unfortunate he is one of the only professors that teachers 370
I took this class and was not the best experience, I highly suggest you do a lot of prayers for this class. As a Learning disability student it was very tough. All the teacher cared about was In and Out food. I did have a tutor from TRIO. I don't know if she is still around. Not the best marketing class I have ever taken. NO to this class.
