talks really fast and runs around the room when he gets excited
Goes to the very last second of the class period. Teaching style is awful
No Comments
Not good, but much better than Casiple.
often uninteresting examples, but such a nice guy and always willing to help you
Great teacher! So helpful, and incredibly nice, no excuses for a bad grade
examples he gives are helpful, test questions come from the hw,nice guy
Very hyper, but brilliant. He is helpful outside of class and answers questions
nice guys but really hard greader..NO partial credit
AMAZING teacher... first time I understood math. Such a nice and hyper guy!!!
Super easy. Probably one the easiest teacher ever.
The most notes i think i have ever taken in my life.
Great teacher! Never though I'd understand stats but I got an A.
You people have to be talking about a different person. I just had a test today and everyone in my class did horrible on it. I have never gotten less than an A in a math class and I am failing his. THink about this before you take this class.

very easy, allowed to use notecards for every test and quiz, probably the best stats teacher
really cute nice guy, extremely helpful, wants you to do good, if you pay attention and study you will do good
Nice guy, wants you to do well, and willing to help. Good teacher, lots of exampls. You can use a note card on all tests and quizzes.
absolutely ADORABLE! soo nice, go to class though, tests and quizes based solely on lectures, go figure he doesnt take attendance because if you want to get a good grade you've gotta come to class
If math is not your strong suit, he moves way to fast. It'll leave your head spinning. He's very nice and willing to help but I failed anyway.
He is an great teacher...you get to use a notecard for quizes and tests...he also drops the lowest quiz/homework grade...gives lots of examples...definitly take his class, it makes stats so much better!
easy tests if you study, no attendance, no hmwk (its just recommended), get to use a notecard for tests/quizzes
Garren goes extremely slow for the first half of the class, which is the easy stuff, the speeds through the end which is the hard stuff. Overall hes generally boring and overflows you with examples, hard to pay attention
Nice guy very helpful but just because he gets good scores on here doesn't mean the class is easy. I'm an A/B student and i got my first D in his class.
Always willing to help! Gives lots of examples in class and lets you use a notecard on the test. As long as you study, the tests are very straightforward. SPSS Homework is easy.
Great person. Always willing to help. He does go pretty fast through the material in class, but explains very well outside of class. Tests and quizzes are taken directly from class examples and homework problems.
Great prof! lots of note-taking in class, but all the problems on tests are right out of the hwk. always willing to help during office hours.
Class is kind of boring but he gives very good and thorough notes. Tests are easy and come straight from his notes and homework assignments from the book. Other homework assignments will help boost grade!
He gives you all of the notes and all of the test questions come from the homework, so do them! The SPSS assignments were very hard though because he didn't teach them, so go to the help center. Overall, best stat teacher!
NEVER take his class at 8AM. He's a really sweet man, but I always felt like he was talking to a wall.
Great teacher, a little crazy but still pretty good. Make sure to take good notes and you'll do great. SPSS is a little tricky but not too bad.
Stats is not my thing but this class is great! First time I got an A on a test!! :) Study and go to class because test questions come straight from in-class examples. A good class!! Not easy...math never is but this is a good one.
Dr. Garren is the best stats teacher you could get. Class is so easy, SPSS assignments are cake, and if you go to class, the test questions come straight from the notes. Math is my weakness and even I have an A in the class! He is the sweetest man ever!!!
SPSS assignments cake. no attendence, but test questions come directly from notes in class and recommended hw. i suck at math and i have a B. knows his stuff and gives plenty of examples
Dr. Garren is a GREAT teacher! The test questions come directly from class lectures and homework. He is very clear and goes very slow! He is always willing to help!!! If you are taking math 220 take Dr. Garren!

A very nice person, I don't like his teaching style though. He only teaches though examples. Be nice to just get an equation and finish class maybe 5 minutes early just once instead of having to hear about people's political offiliation once more.
Don't get me wrong, he's a very nice person. I just absolutely hate his teaching style. Just give me a formula or equation. I don't need another example of people's "political affiliation"
He is a very helpful and nice guy. He gives examples to make sure everyone understands, which helps since math is definitely not my strong subject. Fair tests: made up of recommended hw problems and in-class examples. Surely one of the best stats teachers available
awesome teacher...not a good math student and i have an A...very clear, no required homework...TAKE HIM
Nice guy, lectures are boring. He speaks in monotone but the class is decent. He is very helpful and there is no required homework. Most of the exam questions come directly from the book, so it's easy to study for.
stats sucks. no two ways about it. he isnt so bad of a teacher, is always willing to help you if you take the initiative to ask. he teaches at a slow enough pace, so if you are good at math you'll do fine. if you suck at math like me, you'll have to work, but still will probably pass
A good word to describe him is "tolerable." The test questions are straight out of the book. He doesn't do a good job of explaining what stuff literally means. He isn't a terrible professor, but the class completely sucks. The SPSS assignments are terrible because not enough time is spent on it.
I ended up withdrawing from the class because I got behind, so you definately want to keep up with the material from the start, especially if you are not a math prodigy. Nice guy but boring, gives examples but is not really that clear on what is really important. Get to tests and say "wtf?!"
Good guy, funny occasionally, but class is boring. Looking at adobe overhead projections can put you to sleep. Not clear on what is important info to know. Test questions are generally altered HW assignments or class examples. Not interactive during class. VERY helpful outside of class.
Mr. Garren is great. One of the nicest and most understanding professors you can get. If you have a problem, he is willing to help. I got to "show work" on a test after it was graded and regain all my points, i was also able to turn in a homework late. If you need to take stats, ONLY take Dr Garren!
I'll be repeating this class in the spring and will hopefully get a different prof. because in Garren's class, I basically had to teach myself. I thought I knew the material in class, but it was a lot more work than I thought it would be. Nice guy, hard class.
Really nice man. I am horrible at math and this was my second time taking stats. He's helpful and the test questions come from notes and practice problems.
anyone that says anything about this class being hard should not be taking a math class to start with. garren is amazing! he curves for no reason and would do anything to help. the homework is a joke and if you study at all and can handle staying awake through lecture, his tests are simple. its a math class- takes some effort, but dont pass him up!
If you have to take Statistics, this is your man. This is my second time in Statistics and having come from the last prof (and apparently this goes for the majority of the math dept here) I was REALLY grateful for Garren.
His teaching style is the worst. All he does is walk in, pass the attendence sheet & begin writing notes. No "good morning, how was your weekend?"... just notes. He also doesn't give good instuctions on SPSS HW or help when you ask. He just tells you to go to the help center at Wilson. I withdrew from this class. Don't take his class!
Not a bad class. His notes are direct and as long as you keep up with your work, you will see everything again on the exam. I'm terrible at math and I've done the minimum and have a B. Compared to the rest of the math dept, Garren is amazing. Take him and don't listen to the negative reviews!!
Did not enjoy this class. I usually do well in math; not in this case. Literally lectures from the moment class starts to the last minute of class. Gives recommended homework (tests contain a lot of these problems) and tests dont cover the notes as much. I pretty much taught myself the material.
Dr. Garren is a really helpful guy. I went to his office hours several times. This is not as easy as 220 by any means. He is a genious and sometimes I got a little lost but I would just go to his office hours and he would explain it. Overall the class wasn't too hard if you went to class.
Very nice guy but lectures are extremely boring! Makes himself available but it is not typically helpful. Don't think going to office hours will boost your grade.
Dr. Garren is one of the worst proffesors at JMU, really, all he does is lecture the entire time. Don't try to ask this guy to explain anything to you, he'ss simply repeat the same thing. If you're taking this guy be prepared to teach yourself or get a tutor
This guy is really helpful. Just pay attention to his lectures and you will learn the stuff. If not then he has office hours where he will stay much longer than he should. The SPSS homework is so easy it is like bonus points.
Really good teacher, take him. not an easy class but if you need to take stats take it with him
Steven Garren is possibly the worst professors I have ever had. He fails to thoroughly explain concepts and simply restates himself whenever asked a question. The tests are based off the homework assignments which he doesn't review or even provide solutions for the work to be checked. He used to put half the class asleep every time without fail
This guy is really boring, especially at 8 am, but if you pay attention, the class is really easy. He curves almost all his tests (I've gotten over 100 on the past two), except for the first one. SPSS is sooo easy because he goes over how to do it in class. He is also really helpful during office hours.
Good prof! Class kinda boring, have to print lots of notes..tests pretty easy if you pay attention and do practice probs. HW really easy! Takes attendance every class. Class NEVER canceled. Overall he's really good! I recommend
This professor is so boring. He does not explain anything, rather restates himself. He does not actually teach through fact, he teaches through examples which are not easy to understand.
Not a great teacher to have at 8 am. Most of the people ended up getting D's.
He is a really nice guy, but he NEVER goes over homework or SPSS [which he never fully explains]. If you have a good grounding in math skills and you're prepared to teach yourself the material, then I guess you'll be ok. I ended up dropping because the exams are murderous.
The class is boring, and if you are not great at math like me, you may struggle. He offers help in office hours often, but during class he does not clarify on the material a lot. The tests are hard, and the SPSS homework is annoying! But take it if you are good at statisics.
If you are just okay in math, Garren is the guy for you. He teaches by examples, which is really helpful considering he gets his text questions from his examples and the homework. Homework isn't mandatory but he gets test problems from it so i suggest doing it. Definitely requires you to work hard.
nice guy, but his teaching style didn't work for me. i took the class to learn stats, not to memorize computer codes for R. Exams were pretty rough and easy to mess up with one mistake.i dreaded going to that class...but he's the only one that teaches this and 325...
I hated this class. I had him at 8 am and fell asleep in every single class. My only reason for going was to sign in because he takes it into consideration. His grading system is so weird. He makes you do SPSS which has no relevance to the class whatsoever. Unless you know someone whos taken him and saved the test DON'T TAKE HIM !!
Good professor, I had him for MATH 325. He did a good job of explaining R. Tests are straight from his examples and the hw probs. Be sure to brush up on your 220 stuff, most of the class is really based on that; it just digs deeper.
Awful teacher. So boring and speaks in a monotone voice. Does examples the whole class and has homework assignments which are incredibly annoying and have no relevance at all. Honestly think he does things just to make it more difficult for the students. Take a different professor!
Very organized! He keeps everything online so you have easy access to the notes. Stats is not an easy class but he explains everything really well. TAKE HIM!!
He doesn't really teach, he just does a bunch of examples, which really doesn't help me. And he's not very helpful if you want to ask questions. He curves tests, but only by about 5 points, so it doesn't help much. I recommend taking another professor.
WORST TEACHER EVER. He gives only examples and never actually teaches the material. His tests are ridiculously hard. If you want to take him, be prepared to teach yourself absolutely everything. He curves, but the curves are absolutely pointless. I warn you now. Dont take him
He is terrible at teaching but the material is not too bad. Hes kind of a weiner.
Professor Garren is a nice guy, but an awful teacher. Most of his teaching is done through examples which he doesn't even explain very well. Textbook hw is not mandatory, (not too helpful for the exams) though he has mandatory SPSS computer assignments which are HARD and not at all useful for the exams.
All JMU Stats teachers are terrible, so you might as well decide based on time of day. Don't take this class at 8AM. Garren is nice but confusing. Go to class. One day its flipping a coin and then you skip one class and the next day you're finding Standard Deviations of Greek letters that you will never learn the meaning behind.
As far as JMU stats professors go, Garren is great. However, his class is painfully boring for an 8am. He also jokes, but nobody really understands. His tests are very straightforward and if you do the homework, youll get at least a B. The SPSS assignments aren't bad if you take notes in class. Take him if you want to learn and get a good grade
Garren is the worst teacher I've ever had. Going to class was horrible and nobody payed any attention because he's so boring. He is the weirdest man ever and sucks at teaching. He taught everything in such complicated ways. Don't take him.
promise you, i'm not a person to dislike a teacher just because of my grade, but i don't know what's the rave about dr. garren. he's confusing, a nice guy, but definitely makes stats A LOT harder than it should be. i could hardly stay awake in his class - he literally TALKS the whole class with no animation. if you can, take someone else
WORST I have EVER had. He is monotone. His jokes are not funny. He doesnt teach the material at all. 10 people had an A-B going into the final in the section I took my sophomore year. I studied my ass of and still got a D. I have been on the Deans list every other semester and he ruined that for me.
Professor Garren is awesome! He is so sweet and is available to help during office hours and is extremely nice! The tests are curved but they are not impossible. READ THE BOOK, DO THE RECOMMENDED HW, and READ YOUR NOTES and you will pass the tests. Not a hard class if you put in the effort, which isn't excruciating. LOVE HIM.
Garren is a good teacher compared to other stat teachers. I had him at 8am but I found taking my own notes instead of the ones he posts on his website to be helpful. Do the recommended HW and go to Roop hall to do SPSS because they will help you if you have questions. Also, go to class. You can't teach yourself stats!
Honestly, statistics just sucks. It's not fun to sit through and it's kind of hard. Garren clearly knew what he was doing; it's just hard to learn because it's boring. It was my most boring class of the semester, by far. His tests were easier than I expected, but make sure you go to class and do some of the recommended homework. It helps!
Easy teacher if you've already taken stats before. He explains everything but is pretty boring and monotone unfortunately. If you memorize the notes he says will be on the tests you'll do well. Homework isn't mandatory but 98% of test questions come from homework questions assigned. Make a minimal effort to review the notes and do the homework.
He provides notes that he advises we print out and use in class, they are unclear. He expects us to have prior knowledge of how statistics, which isn't a real subject anyway, works. Garren's a nice guy, but his class is pointless, along with the rest of the math classes at JMU. Good luck finding a good one.
I really liked Dr. Garren. He's nice and easily approachable. Don't be discouraged if you don't do well at first because of the computer program (R). Just keep practicing by doing the homework and you'll be fine. He grades quicker than any teacher I've ever had before, even with exams. You always know where you stand and overall it was a good class
Professor Garren is nice guy, just EXTREMELY boring at 8 am. Stats is just hard to comprehend for me, and he didn't do much to help me understand in class or keep me awake. The computer program is the dumbest thing I've ever done and never helped me, and the homework always seemed easier than the test. JUST STUDY!
Dr. Garren is a nice man and is clearly brilliant with what he does, but is very poor in teaching the material. If you take the course and have him, you're better off talking to someone who has taken the class rather than going to him for help b/c while he does want you to understand, he doesn't know how to explain the concepts to a student.
Steve is very intelligent in regards to statistics. However he isn't the best at explaining how to execute the concepts. If you are taking this class plan on learning the basics of R before ever stepping foot in the class. His explanations are correct just hard to understand.
Tests comeo directly from notes and practice propblems he suggests. Super easy and super boring.
I definately recommend taking STAT with professor garren!! The class is boring, but he explains things in great detail and the tests come from the notes and homework. Literally if you do the homework and know the problems in the notes theres no way you can't get an A!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He cannot explain anything.. Basically he throws numbers out and you are stuck teaching yourself everything else. One of those people who are super brilliant but cannot teach.
Dr. Garren isn't so bad. The class is very dull (don't recommend it as an 8 am). Occasionally he'll make a really dorky and endearing joke. Everything on the test is from the notes almost exactly, so if you know them well, you're good. He is very approachable and gracious, so there is no need to be intimidated or embarrassed if you're a bit late.
if math isn't your thing, do NOT take this class. His lecture is extremely boring and hard to follow (especially at 8a.m) He is a very smart guy, but I believe teaching is not his thing.
I have Garren 8am which sucks especially because I despise math but I love this class. Tests are not hard at all if you study, the online work is worth a good amount which you can get help with at the math center, and he puts everything into easy to understand context. Super nice at office hours. Definitely my favorite teacher at JMU so far.
Dr. Garren is a very nice man, and clearly brilliant with what he does, but cannot teach. He is willing to answer questions, but answers in a very complicated way. I spent a ton of time in the math learning center trying to understand his lectures. Tests are not multiple choice and there are a lot of hw assignments. Avoid. Nice guy but avoid.
If you don't understand math, don't take garren. Nice guy, but he's difficult to understand if you arent mathematically inclined.
Dr.Garren is a great and helpful professor. He may be a bit boring and awkward, but he makes stats easy compared to other professors. His tests are exactly like the in-class exercises and book problems. The test averages are within the A- B range. I didn't take stats in high school and I currently have an A. Drink coffee before you go to class!!
If you've taken or are good at Stats, class will be easy, if not, then it can be challenging. Either way class is boring as all hell. The greatest thing about this class is its not mandatory and the notes are online.
EASY A! His test questions come straight from class notes and textbook homework. i highly recumbent printing the notes he has posted online and bringing them to class!
Although the class was tiring at 8am, it was very easy. He tells you exactly how to do the online homework and SPSS. Just write down what he says. His tests were the same problems in the notes and homework, so as long as you do that you're golden. Very easy class as long as you keep up. Take him!
One of the nicest professors I've had. Always responded relatively quickly to my emailed HW questions. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you should go if you're not the type to learn straight from your book, and the textbook is where the problems on the tests come from! HW is weighted heavily, so that's a plus or a minus depending on your preference.
Good professor, helpful outside of class. Put in effort and you'll do fine
Really, really nice guy. Very dry. Tests are straightforward. Go to class and don't skip and if it comes down to it and you need a bump up to the next grade, he will do it if you've been to every class. Avoid for 8 am (would definitely fall asleep) other than that, he's a nice guy and a good teacher.
He's a really helpful teacher and you can tell he wants all of his students to do well. I'm awful at statistic and if I hadn't had taken a stats course in high school I wouldn't have done as well. Avoid taking at 8 am because he's not an interesting guy but DO NOT SKIP. He'll give you a grade boost if you don't miss class.
Extremely helpful during office hours, especially for SPSS assignments. Don't bomb any of the tests! It'll tank you hard! Definitely go to glass; I'd recommend printing his notes to follow along and make notes as the tests are based from that and the textbook. Good professor, but hard to get an A.
He tries to tell jokes. Some are funny but not all. Homework is pretty easy. Tests are kind of tough. There is optional homework in the textbook. Yo should look through some of it. It may help.
Dr. Garren is a really sweet man and genuinely cares for his students and the subject he's teaching. His lectures are pretty dry and boring and it's important for you to go even though attendance isn't mandatory. He assigns online homework and SPSS and his tests are pretty tough. Super helpful over email and at office hours.
Never taken stat before & this class was the easiest class I've ever taken. He has pre-written notes so you just follow along & write supplementary notes. He tells you exactly what to do for SPSS. If you have a question on the WeBWorK, email him & he'll answer promptly. Explains everything clearly. Tests are textbook questions & notes. Go to class!
Very clear notes. Assigns homework that is representative of the tests. If you've seen math notation before, the course is very easy. Just keep up with the material, and always make sure you can do the homework on your own. If you can ace the homework without help, then you can ace the tests.
Most helpful professor I have had at JMU. His tests can be tough, but he gives curves. If you go over your notes and do the textbook homework, this is an easy A! Got a 76 on my first test but passed the class with an A. He wants his students to succeed! I could write paragraphs on end, but if you need to take Math220, Garren is your guy!!!
Take with caution, he's not for everybody. I personally had a very tough time in this class. Don't get me wrong, he's a great guy and willing to help, but if you're a hands-on learner, you may struggle.
Come to class or you won't get the curve. Make sure to do ALL of the non-graded textbook problems for practice for the exam because they pop up on the exams. Make sure to study all of the examples he spends time as some are verbatim on the exams. The final is cumulative so know when to use and when not to use the formulas.
If you have to take Math 220, Garren is a great choice. His notes are easy to follow. The class is not thrilling but make sure not to zone out because you need to know everything. He is very clear about what is going to be on the test and always curves.
Garren is a really sweet professor! Stats is a tough subject, but if you go to every class he gives a big curve. Do the textbook homework!! It's optional, but the test questions will be exactly like them! I didn't do it for the first test and got a 61, did the questions for the second one and got a 95. SPSS, webwork, and tests are the only grades.
I personally had a hard time in Garren's class this semester, however he is generous in his grading especially on the first and second tests which he curves. I don't like his teaching style and frankly had to resist the urge to fall asleep in almost every class. Not a bad professor but not great either.
Garren is probably the easiest teacher when it comes to stats. He explains everything really well and is a pretty easy grader. I go to his office hours all the time and he is really helpful. Just make sure you always go to class, use his notes, and pay attention because his lectures ARE the tests.
Honestly, he isn't that bad. Just do the textbook homework even though it isn't graded because the test questions are like the textbook homework he assigns. He is strict on attendance and on phones so it will count against you if you skip or if you're on your phone in class. He is sometimes funny and not the best at answering questions directly.
Grade consists of SPSS, webwork, and tests Tests are textbook examples and lecture examples He has a great program that automatically updates you on your current grade and what you need to get next to achieve a certain grade after every assignment If you need help with webwork just go to learning center overall great, focus more on concepts
Prof Garren is super incredible. Very helpful inside and outside of class. lectures can be a bit dry, but he lays everything out for you. make sure to follow along by doing the optional textbook problems- SUPER HELPFUL. he curves too. excellent teacher.
Prof Garren is super helpful inside and outside of class. Lectures can be a bit dry and he goes pretty quickly but he lays it all out for you. Definitiely follow along by doing the optional homework textbook problems. go to office hours. he's an excellent professor.
Professor Garren is knowledgable on the subject he is teaching, but the class overall is very hard. You cannot miss a single class or you will fall way behind, the homework is pretty challenging sometimes if you miss any key points in the lecture, and the tests are extremely hard. personally wouldn't retake this course with this teacher
Very nice man!He def tries to make this class fun but it still is not. Never felt like I knew how to prepare or what to expect concerning his tests. Also don't recommend taking him as an 8am class, a doozy. other assignments are weighted heavily and can help a poor test grade!!! Also, you get marked absent if u have to go use the bathroom :(
He makes you more confused at math than you were ever before. He goes through the notes quickly and leaves you confused. He does know his math though! I was good at math until this stats class. On the bright side, he does curve the tests and SPSS and webwork help make up for your grade! I would not take his class again.
TAKE THIS MAN. He is the best at explaining everything word for word. I took this class as a repeat-forgive because I got a C in it the first time, I got an A with Prof Garren! He is ready to help and is always accessible in and out of office hours. Curves the test crazy amounts. Do your work: office hours & the Math Center in SSC, you'll be fine!
Love Dr. Garren! I took him for maymester and it was such a good decision. He is an EXCELLENT teacher and is BEYOND NICE but does go through the notes very fast. He is adorable but awkward. DO THE TEXTBOOK PROBLEMS as those will legit be the test questions. Tests werent bad at all to me! Put in the work and youll be straight! TAKE HIM
I took Garren for Math 220 which is already a difficult class. When sitting in lecture I felt like I was understanding the material, but the Webwork & SPSS left me more confused, and the tests were extremely hard, even though I did all of the textbook homework. Overall he's adorable, but this class felt impossible.
If you haven't taken stats before, dont take this class. Professor Garren is so nice and tries to teach the best he can but he just throws so much information at you and if youre not paying attention you will become lost quick. The Webwork and SPSS are extremely difficult and if you don't write down step by step how he does the SPSS, you'll be lost
I would not take this class again. The class was boring and dry and Garren didnt answer the questions he was being asked. The webworks and spss assignments were unnecessarily hard (even stats majors were unable to help) and the tests were similar. Unless you write EVERYTHING down that is said in class the notes will make no sense.
Horrible Professor! Does not give notes and if you can't keep up with him in class, you will do horribly in R. Don't take! Not at all helpful during office hours. Does not compromise.
Steven Garren is overall a good professor. Hes probably one of the harder math 220 profs but he still isnt bad. Textbook homework is optional but all of the tests are questions from notes and the textbook. He curves tests and homeworks balance out bad test grades. Attendance is mandatory but taking his class was worth the hard work!
Professor Garren definitely knows what he is doing but he has trouble explaining it to students who are taking this as an intro level stat class. Make sure you take detailed notes, especially on the SPSS assignments he gives out in class, and DO THE TEXTBOOK HOMEWORK! the homework is usually at least half of the exams!
Okay first off, Professor Garren curves his exams like crazy (I got a 105 on my fist exam)! He grades attendance so it's best to go to class but he gives excused abcences if you're sick/emergency! The exam question are the same as the optional HW questions (do the optional HW problems in the textbook and you're bound to get A-B!
Math 321 was not the easiest class, especially if you aren't a math major (I'm bio) but Dr. Garren is the BEST. He happily and helpfully answered my questions. His tests are pretty similar to the homeworks. He cares so much about his students doing well. I would absolutely take another math class with him and I hate math but he made it much easier.
Class is alright. Follow along with him in R and you'll be fine.
Doesn't let you leave class for any reason. There are ample opportunities to go to his office hours for help on homework. The notes are printable and fill-in-the-blank, and the tests are closed-note and rather difficult. He is very helpful, so I would still recommend him.
Very smart man and knows what he's talking about. He is very thorough with his lectures, sometimes overly thorough, but posts the chapter notes on canvas. I suggest printing out the notes and then doing the work as he goes through it. Online was asynchronous so you have to keep on top of it. 4 tests and heavily weighted.
I have always struggled with math and statistics is especially hard for me, but Professor Garren is a fantastic teacher and really explains things well. He answers emails quickly when you need help, even on weekends, and gives multiple opportunities to save your grade if you don't do as well on the tests. Highly recommend!
Such a great guy and very thorough in his lectures.
Dont take him if you are going to be online because of Covid. His lectures were uploaded and he would talk very fast. The grades are mostly on the 4 test even though there is so much homework. Just take anyone else.
I would recommend Prof. Garren for MATH 220 if you have already taken MATH 105. I personally did not understand his online lecture. If you want to pass his class, you must DO THE TEXTBOOK HOMEWORK and fill out the notes for the lectures then you will pass his class. BTW he curves your exam grades up to 10 points sometimes.
Found it hard as a bio major, but he is will always do his best always to help you out! Willing to help on hw and sometimes on tests if he can. Make sure you take notes on the code you use and practice in class examples, will help on HW and tests. Had zoom and in person option. HW is big part of grade so try hard! lecture can be dry most times
Class is very lecture heavy and he speaks way to fast, his lectures are boring, and he goes to fast through problems. A lot of his problems are political and historical based. As for the homework that comes from the textbook for practice (that he assigns) don't match the test and neither do the homeworks problems that he grades for assignments.
Take Professor Garren! Lecture was optional but I recommend going to them and taking notes. 3 exams and a final with a couple Webwork homework assignments a week. Exam questions were just like the optional textbook homework and in class examples. Stats isn't easy but f you put in the work by doing the optional homework your bound to get an A or B!
He looks like Saul Goodman.
Dr. Garren is nice and very knowledgeable on the subject; however, his lectures can be a bit dry. He's very helpful when it comes to questions. His exams are a bit difficult and most of your grade is dependent on exams and the homework. Overall, I would say his class is very doable, especially if you're just taking it for credit.
I want to warn you that when he says "If you have perfect attendance, I'll bump a D+ up to a C-" Just know he will not bump up your grade. So go ahead and skip the class if you feel like it. It was not worth it. Sincerely, Kid who had perfect attendance
Good luck...
Garren was pretty solid. Statistics is just hard. Homework is very doable, and you often have numerous attempts on problems. Tests are hard, but all of ours were curved a minimum of 10 points each time. Tests were also online, he lets you have 2 attempts on pretty much all free response questions. Lectures are pretty boring, but theyre all recorded
Professor Garren's class is very lecture heavy and dry. He goes extremely quickly through the problems without much explanation. I found the homework very difficult and not anything like the tests.
i really wanted to like dr.garren as a professor, but the way he teaches is really difficult for me to understand. he does want you to succeed and is more than willing to curve exams (one exam was curved by 20 points which was nice), but he tends to just go over examples rather than explaining them which made it hard for me, but i still recommend
Garren is really nice, it was just hard for me to learn in class due to how he teaches. 4 exams including the final, 7 webwork homework assignments, no aleks, no spss, curves every test.
His recorded lectures are incredibly useful, though the class is largely self-taught. Even with class attendance and note taking, understanding the content is on you. His fast paced teaching lacks full explanations and you will not understand it the first time. However, there are generous grading curves every time, and he is a nice person.
Dr. Garren was nice but couldnt answer most of my questions and was hard to follow during lectures. Be prepared to teach yourself through the text book and tutor help.
Steven Garren is an odd duck, but I would say he's a decent prof. Just be prepared to do some outside of class work on rewatching lectures, extra textbook problems, etc. in order to do well on tests. His tests are usually curved and he records all of his lectures. His teaching style is just reading off his notes though, little to no explaining.
His grading consists of homework on SPSS and Webwork and the rest are 3 or 4 exams (midterms) and one final. He usually curves exams and the homework are not that bad. He lets you know how to follow instructions. This is my second time taking STATS and he is WAYYYY better than my last professor. His goes over stuff very fast though.
He is a great guy dont get me wrong but he does not know how to properly teach and get you ready for the exam. I have went into every exam feeling confident and the opposite happens, get ready to fail this class and be confused.
Honestly Garren was fine, but 220 was awful and when I tried to go to the SMLC, even the tutors had no idea how to do my homework or help me in any way. Every other student I talked to that was in 220 with another professor had homework that was much more familiar to the tutors, and were given resources to help from their professors as well.
Professor Garren is a nice guy, but his teaching style can be hit-or-miss. The class is mostly self-taught, so you'll need to put in extra work outside of class using the textbook and Unstuck AI to really grasp the content. Fair grading with generous curves, though.
All tests were taken on the computer in the classroom and I was able to use all of my formula sheets on my computer and occasionally notes. Optional homeworks and then SPSS assignments he will walk you through the entire thing. Such an easy class. I will never not reccomend Garren!!
garren is nice, but if you're already bad at math, i would take someone else. his teaching was really hard to understand, he just does a practice problem and hopes that his students understand. his exams are all on paper now and he does curve but it's because everyone does so bad. our average for one of the exams was a 40%. take anyone else.
He is the sweetest guy ever! There aren't many homework assignments so grades for each assignment and test are very important. The first day of class is MANDATORY but the rest you can be on zoom or in class. He doesn't take attendance other than on the first day of class. He does a really good job explaining concepts and giving examples.
If you're not good at math like me, avoid him at all costs. He is a nice guy but his lectures are confusing and I never understand how they apply to the actual material. We have SPSS assignments every couple of weeks and WeBWorks. Exams are most of your grade. Just not the teacher for me.
If you're bad at math like me do not take him. He's a nice person but the way he teaches was so confusing and I didn't understand how it applied to the material on the test. We have SPSS and WeBWork assignments sometimes but other than that the exams are the bulk of your grade. You will need external help to pass this class.
DO NOT TAKE! makes all the course material so confusing and WILL NOT help you if you ask, i struggled so hard and basically begged for help and he did NOT care
I am terrible at math so this class was very difficult for me, but I loved the professor. He was always in a great mood and I enjoyed class. He responded promptly to emails and answered every question well that was asked.
Wouldn't recommend, his class was all over the place and was super confusing. Missing one class will put you so far behind, it's insane. His class is just a lot, he talks a lot and tends to jumble the topics he's talking about together.
You can either go in person or online w zoom. If u show up in person tho he'll bump up your grade. his notes are weird, so you'll need to teach yourself. Textbook is great and chatgpt walks u through it really well. exams are a crazy heavy grade, practice a lot w textbook questions. and review notes and recorded meetings to see what he'll grade on.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE R. I needed a math and this sounded easy it is not. No amount of help allowed me to score higher than a 70 on homework, Test averages were less than 70 consistently. Might not pass this class
If you know how to use R you'll be okay. If not it will be very very hard. He doesn't explain a ton, lecture is just a long monologue. No amount of help or cheating will allow you to understand this class. He is available but not the most helpful. Average on exams is sub 70 every time. If you don't already know how to use R this class will be hard
Classes can be taken in person or online. His notes were confusing at times and he would try to make it better by bringing it back to a topic we learned in the beginning of the semester. 3 exams and final cumulative. He does gives extra credit but u will have to teach urself
this class was super confusing, he is a good person and gives extra credits but you have to teach yourself. exams in person, cumulative final.
