Lectures are very interesting. Beware of some TA's who are extremely hard graders. George is a difficult grader and very particular about 100% accuracy for essays... No partial credit given. Lili is an awesome TA and a much more fair grader. Discussions are very important.
Professor Gaulin is great! he is very enthusiastic about in his lectures and knows what he is talking about. He uses great everyday examples to help students understand the material better! definately recommend!!!
lectures are kind of confusing at first, text sort of boring but amazing lecturer. honestly one of the best at ucsb, interesting, engaging, and genuinely nice.
He is boring. The class is pretty easy to get an A in, if you put in the work, but if another teacher is available for the class, take your chances with them.
The truth is, he's not hot, but I just felt like he deserved more points. Gaulin forever!
Gaulin is a wonderful professor, his lectures are fascinating and I highly recommend his class.

He's fairly interesting but has a tendency to speed through the material. The readings are a bit frivolous and tend to include a lot of confusing detail not included in the lecture.
I really liked this class! The lectures are interesting and Gaulin is good at teaching it! He always answers questions in class which shows he's very willing to help. His lectures are online plus there is a take home midterm. I would definitely recommend this class.
i never failed to fall asleep in class
i loved this class. material was great and he was very accessible. just go in and talk to him if you ever have trouble!
tends to ramble on and eventual you forget what he was talking about or his point. He gives you a take home midterm, but its the hardest take home mid-term ever! He words questions on his test so that you don't understand what excatly it is hes looking for or even asking.
Worst class I have ever taken! Lectures were pointless and boring. Don't even bother taking notes because slides aren't helpful at all. Rambles way too much and tests are impossible!! Class material is interesting but the way it is taught and who teaches it makes it torture!
Worst professor ever. He teaches verbatim from the text he wrote, which is more painful than a brick to the face. He has obvoius favorites and calls on them frequently during lecture for no reason, often engaging in meaningless one on one dialogues. Uses many straw man fallacies to prove his weak arguments. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Excellent class! One of the best Professor's @ UCSB. The class material is throught provoking..
One of my favorite classes! Super interesting and though provoking. He engages students very well. The text is pretty much the same as lecture so I got by without doing my reading. Class was just the right difficulty, challenging without being too hard.

Professor Gaulin is by far the best professor I have EVER had. He is amazing. His lectures were so interesting and well organized, he would spend forever explaining something if you didn't get it and he is so passionate about his subject. If you ever have a chance to learn from this man, do it.
Gaulin is amazing. Great lecturer, very helpful and friendly at office hours. Funny at times. He made me want to study Anthropology!
One of the best professors I've had so far. He is very entertaining and makes a lot of funny jokes about the material during lecture. He is such am easy going nice man. If something isn't clear he explains it until everyone understands. The lectures are structured very well and the power points are online incase you miss something.
Probably the best class I've had so far. If you get a chance to take this class, do it asap! Last qtr the grading system was a bit rough (100 points in the class, automatic 10 point reduction if you ask for extra credit!!) but I got an A because I went to section and lecture every day. You won't feel like you're wasting your time!
He is a very good professor and tries his hardest to make sure he gets the material (which is a lot) covered in an interesting.
Worst teacher! I really do not understand what these students' below are talking about. I emailed him about his lecture notes (keep in mind, I was asking for clarity) and he snapped back telling me he has no obligation to help me. He is rude! Tests are VERY hard too
I AGREE with the person below me. Seriously, I have heard he changed his lecture style? I find the lectures VERY boring, & i look around & people around me are sleeping. The tests are very hard & dont really contain what is said in lecture. I was excited to take this class because his ratings on here were great but he is NOT living up to the hype!
I thought he was easy cuz his ratings were high and the midterm's take home but it's NOT!! His lectures can be funny and some can be really boring...and it sucks if you have a bad TA.
one of the best professors iv had. this class caused me to change my major because it was so interesting. his lectures are very well organized and testing and grading is very fair. i also took anth 5 from him it was just as good.. he is extremely approachable and truly cares about his student's understanding.
He's boring and a lot of what he's teaching is contradicted by other research. The test had an incorrect question on it, the TA agreed but he didn't throw out the question. Take if you really believe everything you do, every thought you have, is determined by evolution - because that's what he thinks.
A very profound professor with a clear vision of what he wishes to get across in his teaching and he does it. The tests are hard but if you utilize the textbook, the TA's, the problem sets, and the professor's office hours well and you're willing to put in the effort, this class is very interesting and rewarding.
He cares very much about teaching and his lecutures are clear and organized. He is very invested in his students and makes a great effort to answer questions and ensure your complete understanding. Class is fun and entertaining and, most of all, teaches you something new every time.
Really interesting class, easy to fallow if you just go to lecture. Don't need book or to read just pay attention. Really nice guy, loves the topic and gets really into it. My TA was amazing, so get a good one! (Aldo)-Funny and makes it fun to learn. Take home midterm easy, final a little hard, study for the essay Q's a lot.
Gaulin had a very routine Powerpoint-lecture style and gave a comprehensive lecture on the material. He knows the subject matter well, answers questions during lecture and is helpful outside of the class during his office hours. This course is aimed at those interested in evolutionary anth.; I wasn't interested so I didn't like it as much as most

i learned a lot, didn't get a great grade but he loves to argue so take his classes if you want to hear discussions of interesting questions posed by advanced upperclassmen who take his classes. he also loves analogies so if that works for you, he's your man
Lectures were always interesting and he always like to incorporate current events into the material. Always happy to help clarify topics and help with homework outside of class
Professor Gaulin is absolutely adorable! He is an extremely kind man who makes every effort to make lecture interesting, understandable, and relatable to everyday life. I didn't think the class was very easy; his tests are pretty difficult (but fair for the most part). Bring your laptop if you want notes that are anywhere close to adequate.
Nice enough most of the time. has an unpredictable temper. Grading is done artistically. he either will not or cannot descibe the material and how he grades. I think he is very prejudiced and doesn't like scrutiny of any kind.
I loved this class, definitely try on the homework and you will get an A, he makes sure you stay on top of things. Definitely go to his office hours because he will "hint" at test questions
Best prof I ever had at UCSB.
He treats every student as if they are an idiot. Wastes class time by giving over the top explanations of words such as skew, optimum, advantageous... etc. When presented with an argument, resorts to personal beliefs rather than professional beliefs. Second lecture and i am already disgusted.
Generally a nice guy, but can be an jerk when it comes to contradicting him, because apparently HE KNOWS EVERYTHING!!! Class was easy, though.
his lectures are always really interesting, and he is a great speaker!
Professor is great but I thought this class was unnecessarily difficult and confusing. Probably not the best class to take as a lost freshman. Would be more interested in taking evolutionary psych with him.
The class gets boring, but its okay if you zone out because he puts the powerpoints online. Going is good because you might hear something important. Section is mandatory and easy. Take home midterm was rough, so make sure you have a good study group. Final was hard, but he curves. Take the honors section (you just read a book)so he knows ur na
one of the best professors at ucsb. explains things really well.
class was soo borign! i fell asleep almost every lecture, but the only way to get a good grade was to pay attention during lecture. hard class! the TAKE HOME midterm class average was a C. the only way you would like this class is if you like the subject.
A great professor - speaks clearly and explains concepts well. Uses images from both the textbook and outside sources to aid in explaining concepts. The class is easy simply if you pay attention to what he is saying and go to section. Do what you are supposed to do, and you should do well.
His tests are really tricky but the essay questions are really easy points so you end up doing pretty well. Do the homework and the study and you already have 30% of your grade thats given. If you learn your notes (which are given in a powerpoint) you'll end up easily with a B and more if you decide to work.
Great professor not too difficult. Extremely clear. Great powerpoints which he puts online. Take home midterm. In class final.
You can tell Gaulin loves what he teaches. That being said, lectures were ridiculously boring. Powerpoints online. Easy midterm/final and extra credit on both. Do your homework and go to section and you'll be fine. I went to a total of 4 lectures and got a B+.
this class is not difficult and the gaulin is genuinely interested in the material. however, it is ridiculously boring and I do NOT recommend it unless you are an anthro major or something. there are much more interesting classes that satisfy the same GEs.
prof. gaulin definitely knows what he's talking about, but i still thought the subject was a terrible bore... definitely take the honors section if you like the subject though. honors course work is minimal and definitely worth the extra time.
creeper. his class is easy, i thought the subject was interesting...but he really creeped me out.
Great teacher. Sometimes I loved the class sometimes it was hard to stay awake. The material is hard but he does a good job in explaining it. Like others have said he will take a whole lecture answering one person's question. Take home midterm is really hard. The material really opened my eyes to a lot of different topics.
Tests come from the lecture. He is very educated and knows it, but I did enjoy his lectures--he was very passionate about the topics. The TA Chris was absolutely amazing and helped out a lot. Try to get him! And the tests weren't bad. Just study. It's not intimidating if you know the basics.
Gaulin is easy to understand. If you go to class, you'll understand the material
He uses a lot of examples during lectures which can get kind of confusing. There are also problem sets due each week in discussion. I wouldn't take this class unless you're really interested in the subject matter.
I absolutely loved this class. He wrote the text book and is absolutely brilliant. The class is really tough, but you will do well if you really try. I definitely recommend this class (but prior knowledge in the area would be helpful).
I liked him. I hated the questions we had to complete for the discussions though! Sometimes there were too many chapters assigned for a week. I didn't go to all of the lectures but I encourage you to do so because he adds a lot of information that is not on the powerpoints but on the tests! Studied hard and got an A+
It was ok, good for an easy class.
I would not recommend taking this class. Rambles on and on, doesn't ever seem to get straight to the point so it is unclear.
HORRIBLE teacher. Knows the subject but doesn't know how to teach it.. You're suppose to pass knowledge down, and he clearly does not know how to do that. DON'T take this class, you will seriously regret it.
Gaulin knows what he's talking about, but sometimes he expects the students to understand with limited explanation. The midterm was ridiculously hard (I think the average was 50% before the curve). He gave us a study guide but not much of the material on the guide was on the midterm. The slides were up for the final though. Be prepared to study!
He goes on and on without really getting to the point. I'm sure he knows his stuff, but I didn't get a lot out of the lectures. I'm really glad he curved the midterm and final because the information he gives in class is not sufficient preparation.
I never bought the book. The midterm and final were not easy, but he does grade them on a curve. The homeworks and experiments are a large part of the grade...
Class is all based on curve. Despite the average between 50%, the professor curved it to a 75% meaning the majority of people got a C. If you study more than the average student in that class, expect a much higher grade. There is a lot of homework in that class, but it's very good review for the midterm and final if you spend time on it.
We talked a lot about natural selection and other things. But overall, if you attended lecture and actually paid attention in class, it wasn't too difficult. Study lectures and the study guide! I got an A. Going to office hours is really interesting- great guy, great professor. Talk to him about his research! I loved this class!
This class was pretty easy. I missed a two week stretch of class right before the midterm and got a 96% on it. I probably opened the book twice throughout the quarter and got an A in the class. Just do the study guides.
Interesting class, although it might be a bit dry if you are not interested in the subject. Easy A if you do your work and study. Also, you can get an extra point in the class for asking an interesting and thought-provoking question in class; he only have a point to one person, and I attended every lecture.
Gaulin was such a great professor! He really got me interested in anthro. Lecture and section are all you need to get an A. You do not have to do the reading. I skipped lecture quite a few times and still got an A. He's really helpful if you go to office hours too. He makes lectures pretty easy to sit through as well. Good class overall.
Evolutionary Psychology is probably the most interesting class I've ever taken, but I found it to be extremely difficult and there was no room for opinion in his class. the book was great and the papers were easy... or so I thought. Guess this just isn't the subject for me.. I got C's on everything :(
I absolutely love Prof. Gaulin! He is so passionate about the subject, and really tries to make sure everyone gets what is going on. Answers lots of questions thoroughly and even tries to learn names in a class of like over 300 people! He is great, take the honors section to get to know him better if you can. Great professor, great class.
Professor Gaulin is a good lecturer, and he is obviously passionate about what he does.If you do 8 easy problem sets,1 research and experiment you'll get 30% of the class done easy. The problem with him is his exams. The exams are very tricky, especially the take-home midterm, and this can lead to grade deflation.Still, hes a good professor, worth taking.
Prof. Gaulin is very passionate about the subject. Section is super easy so make sure you go and do all of the problem sets cause they're easy points! The exams are super tricky (even the take home midterm!)
I love this professor. He tries to learn everyone's name and is so respectful and nice to his students. His depth of passion and knowledge of his subject is incredible, and he will perfectly answer any question you ask. The reading doesn't seem to be too mandatory, just skim over it and highlight things that you might need for the homework.
Do not take this class if you just need to get a GE out of the way. Hardest class I have ever taken and I have taken a ton of classes. Average on the take-home midterm was a D-. The book is pointless to read and is $80 so I wouldn't recommend getting it since it is difficult to read. Must go to every lecture for iclicker questions.
great professor. if you don't like the subject then the tests are a little difficult but it is because of gaulin and this class that i changed my major to anthro. i loved everything about this class!!
Anth 5 is honestly the most interesting class I've ever taken. It starts off rough if you're not into biology but the second half of the course gets much more interesting. Attendance is mandatory, there's an iClicker. Gaulin is clear, concise, and so likable; everyone adored him. Often entertaining and engaging power points. A must take class.
I absolutely loved this class...I declared as a physical anthro major after taking it. Professor Gaulin is obviously interested in the subject matter and he makes it interesting. I highly recommend that you take this class!
You can tell that Professor Gaulin has a passion for Physical Anthro from the moment you step into lecture. He seems to give extra attention to small details which is a bit annoying, but the class is definitely doable as long as you go to lecture and do the problem sets. I personally wouldn't take this class over again just because it was stressful feeling unclear on the material AND he doesn't give a study guide for the final (?!?). But I could definitely see why some people enjoyed this class.
hated this class with a passion. he may like what he does but he does not make one exited. this class sucked
Thought he was a good lecturer, very interested in the topic and very engaging in his teaching, however a good TA is crucial because they will clear up any questions you might have after lecture, reading is definitely helpful but not necessary to pass, just go to lecture, take notes and study your notes thoroughly and youll pass this class
i hated this class! nothing against the professsor but this subject just isnt my thing. he knows the subject so well and seems excited to teach. iclicker questions everyday and you get marked down if you answer wrong. take home midterm was harder than the final. final consist of short answers.
lecture incredibly boring. must attend lectures, graded clicker questions in each class. take home midterm (very hard) and final. Gaulin is pretty passionate about physical anth, just wasn't my thing. he sets the entire grading scheme down 5% (85 is an A-, 87.5 an A, etc.), so it's not too difficult to pull off a B+ or an A.
I hated this man. He's a pretentious moron who believes that confused students are stupid instead of attributing their confusion to his horrible teaching skills. The subject is fascinating and with any other teacher (especially his head TA, Kate) I would recommend the class. His take home midterm was hard but other than that it was pretty easy.
I loved this class!! The content was super interesting and eye-opening. The midterm isn't too hard because it's take home, and if you put time into it, use your notes and your book, you'll do well. The final was pretty difficult but Gaulin is fair and really awesome. A really entertaining class, i recommend it to anyone willing to work!
Professor Gaulin is a really amazing professor and his lectures(most of them at least) are very interesting and engaging. He made me want to major in Physical Anthropology. The midterm is take-home, but it is difficult, so do not procrastinate. The final is fair if you study well. Overall a great class and interesting subject.
Take this class if you are interested in science, bio. or evolution. It's really hard and boring but he is somewhat clear. You have to go to class and take notes because the slides will be confusing if you don't. I wouldn't take it unless you are an anthro. major
Great teacher and incredibly smart human being. Berkeley and Harvard grad who is both passionate and knowledgeable. I encourage use of his office hours he is helpful and can offer you hints as to what will be on his final.
one of the best educators I've ever had at UCSB.
He is a smart person who has a passion for what he teachers. However, if you're not into biology or science in general, it will seem boring. Lectures and sections are crucial, though not mandatory. I recommend his class to those into science or in the anthro major.
Very intelligent man who is very engaging. Walks up and down the aisles all the time...IClicker counts as extra credit, but regardless you should attend lecture. Weekly problem sets aren't terribly difficult, but provide for a sense of if you really understand the content. Take-home midterm shouldn't be that bad if you keep up with the readings.
Great prof he is very good at explaining. Take home midterms! Really interesting topic, and the problem sets are only graded on completion. powerpoints are online so if you miss a class its not too bad
Dr. Gaulin is an excellent professor, he knows the material inside out. If you really want to learn something take this class. It's challenging, yet he kept me engaged throughout the entire lecture. He is extremely enthusiastic and enjoyable to listen to, two very high thumbs up. Take his class you will not regret it.
Love this guy! He's immensely passionate about the subject and doesn't seem to have the general vapid monotone outlook of most GE teachers. One of my favorite classes, although the midterm was pretty tough - there is EC! He is truly interesting and cracks jokes yet is still very intelligent about the material. Take ANTHRO 5! You'll love it.
Such an interesting class! Professor was alright, you could tell he really knows what he is talking about, I mean, he wrote the textbook that is used for the class! Midterm was take home, but hard. SUper interesting material, i really enjoyed the class. take it if your interesting in human development!
Professor Gaulin is very enthusiastic about anthropology and is very knowledgeable, however if you are not a science lover I would NOT take this class! It is pretty much synonymous with a biology class and I found it very challenging. But if you work hard and actually read the book you will be fine.
Gaulin is a nice guy. The lectures were useful but the textbook was horrible. In fact the textbook is just a collection of academic articles that were interesting but unhelpful. The two exams are very tough not because the concepts are hard to understand but because there was no real way to study the material.
Some lectures are interesting and some are not. Attendance is mandatory since there are IClicker questions. Overall, the class is challenging. The take-home midterm is HARD. The averages weren't good. There is no real way to "cram" study because you must understand all concepts before moving on. Would not recommend.
Gaulin is a good professor, but the midterm and final are extremely challenging! Even if you think you know the material, study harder! The concepts are interesting, but the book is really hard to understand, therefore not very helpful.
If you actually do assigned readings and pay attention in lecture, this class shouldn't be too hard. Midterm and final are very hard but not impossible. Gaulin presents interesting topics that complement the readings well. He was a fantastic professor and I learned more in this class than I ever have before Definitely favorite class of the quarter.
Yikes...I so regret taking this class. :( beware. Only take this if you really like the subject or if it's part of your major otherwise, definitely take another class to complete your GE's
Gaulin was an excellent professor. His passion for his work made me really excited about it. If you're at all interested in learning more about evolution and natural selection, or just want to learn some cool facts, take this class! Didn't need the textbook at all.
Don't take this class if you're just looking for a GE! Gaulin isn't really clear, and he's mean. He wrote the book, so if you're confused in lecture the book won't help and vice versa.
VERY interesting class; takes some work, I didn't stay as on top of the reading as I should have but still got a B+. Pleasantly challenging class, Gaulin doesn't make it EASY, but is fair. He's pretty clear and posts tons of supplementary materials and all his lecture slides on gauchospace. Definitely my favorite professor last quarter.
Grades on a 100 point scale. Isn't very clear on concepts/ideas. Jumps from one idea to another irrelevant from those of the class. TA Emily Miner was horrible. Do not take this class! Totally hurt my GPA.
Class was very interesting, but I felt like most of the time, the tests and assignments were designed to REALLY trick and deceive the students.. the TA (Emily Miner) wasn't helpful either. Weird grading methods and confusing course overall.
Terrible.
The class could be interesting at times. It dealt with subjects like innate gender differences that he handled rather insensitively though. You practically had to be a mind reader to get a decent grade on the writing assignments. Overall, no fun and struggle to maintain a B.
Gaulin is great, and you can tell he really loves what he teaches. i really liked going to lecture, section was a bit boring, but very helpful. only downside were the exams. they were extremely difficult, however the midterm is take home...but still super hard, and i had a study group of around 5 other people, as long as you study, you'll be fine
I took this to fulfill a GE and because it seemed easy enough. Professor Gaulin is VERY smart but he is impossible to tolerate in lecture. His lectures are hard to follow. Section is not for review of the lectures but to learn other material. Weekly hmwrk. Exams are no longer take home.
Amazing Professor! The class itself was a bit difficult, its not an easy A whatsoever, but it is extremely interesting and he is morethan willing to help students who go to his office hours. The midterm and final MC part of the exam is the hardes b/c the wording is a bit hard. But the open response for the midterm and finals are fairly easy!
"Evolution of Human Sexuality" consisted of 2 papers, 1 mid-term, & 1 final. Spring12 was his first time teaching the class and there was no text book, but a lot of articles posted on gauchosapce. The articles are mandatory because tests & papers are based off of it. I went to every lecture cuz it helped clarify his vague slides. I learned a lot!
The class is quite interesting but Gaulin is very boring. Grading is based on various things. His multiple choice is RIDICULOUSLY hard. You MUST pay attention to details and wording. The class average on the midterm was 62%. He did curve it to make the average 66. The final was out of this world hard. Be cautious when deciding to take this class.
Gaulin is a nice guy, but gets off topic a lot. I went into bio anthro to full-fill a G.E. my freshman year, BIG MISTAKE. The exams are impossible. The midterm average was 56 percent! I ended up changing my grade to pass/no pass. I wouldn't recommend this course unless you have a love for biological anthropology.
The exam grades from Gaulin's midterms and finals give one the impression that his only desire is to fail his students. On our midterm the average was a 54. He did not curve this midterm. The grading was unreasonably hard and his questions are intentionally deceitful. He does not test whether you have a good understanding of the information.
Took this class for a GE- not a good idea. Midterm average was a 56 with no curve. Only take this if you're going to go into the major.
Oh man this class...interesting BUT don't take it unless it's a major requirement.Rack up as much extra credit as possible with iclicker questions in Lect.Section assignments are easy free points. The Midterm was a living hell full of intentionally deceiving questions. The final was more straightforward. This class requires nothing but your all.
Tough class. midterm and final are very tricky. there is opportunity for extra credit and weekly problems sets are easy points because you get credit as long as you do them. Class overall is hard, but REALLY interesting.
This class is definitely passable. The other reviewers are on point that the tests are quite tricky and deceitful. I am a senior and got a B while doing all the reading. It's unfortunate he makes such questions because I think a lot of people who understand the concepts simply get tricked. A good class to fulfull G.E., but not to get an A.
The content of this class is actually very interesting. You will learn a lot. But don't take this class if you want an A. Gaulin runs a very tough class. He's obviously a brilliant man but he is not a good teacher. You cannot let yourself get behind on the reading or lectures.
Excellent lecturer. Extremely clear and easy to understand, but only if you can keep up with his vocabulary. Employs useful analogies and anticipates specific types of confusion, clarifying accordingly. Exams come straight from lecture; passed with an A doing almost none of the reading. Easy homework assignments provide a comfortable grade cushion.
Even though I can agree that a lot of times help in this course was hard to come by, and the TA's were of minimal assistance, I actually really enjoyed the course. Getting in A is pretty difficult. I ended with a B+ but a damn proud of it. And more importantly, I learned a ton. Very interesting!
Very interesting material, great lectures. I took this with a Creationist on my floor who didn't believe in evolution- now he does. As a bio major, getting an A was easy, but it might not be that way for non-bio/anthro majors, particularly freshmen. Go to lecture and section, don't bother with the textbook. Great if you're interested in evolution.
If you have taken ANTH 7 and ANTH 107 prior to taking this course, then this class will be a lot easier. It is basically the same information repeated from ANTH 7 with a slight amount of changes. If you are familiar with Tooby and EP, it won't be too hard. However, Gaulin can be a bit tough and does not curve the grade.
Seems people either love or hate Gaulin. I am one of the many that love him. His passion for the subject & enthusiasm with which he teaches his classes make going to lecture fun and the reading is very interesting. If you read and engage yourself in lecture you will pass with flying colors. He is also great about discussing topics outside of class.
He is especially great in UD course-doesn't care if we cover 1 slide/lecture, he'd rather go at our pace & take the discussion wherever our questions lead. It's refreshing to be able to discuss theories/ideas with a professor almost as colleagues. There is a mutual respect. Exams are kind of difficult but if you like the subject you'll be fine!
ANTH 5 is not an easy GE class, so don't take it if you just want to goof off and get an easy A, there's lots of reading, but if you have an interest in the origins of human behavior, then this class is for you. I found this class to be incredibly interesting, and Gaulin clearly has a passion for what he teaches and articulates his idea clearly
The best class I've ever taken at UCSB. Gaulin is an absolute genius. I will never forget the cool stuff I learned. Take as a pass no pass if you want to be overwhelmed with cool knowledge.
The class seems really straightforward until essay or test time. Instructions and questions are really deceptive. Definitely not a professor concerned with whether his students succeed.
One of the most interesting courses I have taken, so far. Gaulin is a great lecturer and explains the subject matter very well. Sections were pretty boring and the questions on the tests were a bit tricky but I would definitely recommend this class to anybody
I really enjoyed this class. You have weekly problem sets so section attendance is mandatory. The tests are really specific, so read carefully. Re-reading the chapter introductions is a great way to study. It's a really interesting class, and I would definitely recommend it. But, it's probably best if you take it when you have a laid-back schedule.
Gaulin goes through lecture slides quickly but explains them well (and they're posted online after lecture). Midterm & final were challenging, but not outrageously difficult, and made up of multiple choice & short "essay" questions. Homework graded on effort. Overall, a solid choice for a GE.
Favorite class so far! Prof. Gaulin is an enthusiastic lecturer, and makes the subject matter captivating to learn about. I-clickers for attendance pts. Very intensive reading. The reading material is prevalent on tests. The midterm and final are detail oriented! I definitely recommend this course! I became an Anthro minor because of it!
Lectures are designed to answer questions. Most of the teaching occurs in the online lectures he assigns before the actual lectures. This class is difficult if you do not grow an interest for it. Pay good attention in lecture and watch all the modules and you should be good.
Avoid taking at all costs unless you are an anthro major. I didn't know what i was getting myself into. 2 books (reading wasnt that bad) but the online modules were bring and tedious. don't take unless you are willing to dedicate a lot of time into understanding the material. he tries to trick you A LOT. 58% was the average for the midterm. beware.
He changed the course and made it harder.
The majority of lectures just answer students questions and don't go over important class material - everything you need to know is in the modules. However, attendance is needed for participation (iclicker). Class does not seem difficult until you take the midterm/final. All test questions are misleading and the wording is confusing. Hard to pass.
Structure was recently changed, so students must watch the lecture modules online prior to class (about an hour long each). He is very passionate and the subject material is extremely interesting. However, the midterm/final MC questions are confusing, making this a difficult GE. Iclicker questions each class (part of grade). Barely used textbooks.
If you are not completely in to Biology then this class is not for you. Lectures are through modules online then class is more of discussions. Not a bad teacher, just the subject wasn't for me. WATCH THE MODULES!!!
Gaulin is an excellent professor. ANTH 5 is very interesting and his interest in it is infectious. He can digress at times but it's usually interesting stuff. Posting lectures online and then using iClickers to make class mandatory does make it take up twice the time of other classes though. Go to his office hours, he will help and fascinate you.
Attendance isn't mandatory if you can get someone to do your iClicker for you. Most learning goes on during your own time and class focuses on review of the topics, so if you're not willing to put in time outside of class this is probably not for you. Gaulin is very enthusiastic about the class! I liked it a lot but it's definitely not an easy A.
Here's the breakdown: 30 to 60 min. lectures online, watched OUTSIDE of class; a small genetics book (pretty cool); the general textbook which DOES INFLUENCE Q'S ON EXAMS. No curve on the midterm, but if your final is better, it replaces the midterm grade (at least for us). He's a great professor, but you must be willing to put in 100% effort.
Worst class ever. Super confusing. Modules are boring and this class made me hate the subject. Do not take it unless you really need it.
This class was very easy to me. All I had to do was go to section and to lecture and that was enough. All the homework assignments are a must since the test reflects them but he goes over everything in dept and t.a.'s just review everything. I never opened the book, except once for a hw question i couldn't answer through my notes or online.
Prof Gaulin is incredibly brilliant and is so passionate about the subject. The modules are a tad boring but his in class discussions bring up fascinating topics. Read the genetics ideas book, it is incredibly entertaining. Exams require depth of knowledge, don't memorize terms learn how to apply the course concepts. I recommend it.
Dr Gaulin is a great professor, but this course is hard. You really need to put many efforts.
Ridiculous amount of work for a lower div. Hour long videos needed to be watched prior to lectures. All reading material appears on the exams. Our midterm average was a 58 because Gaulin loves trick questions...
I loved and hated this class. Gaulin is such a terrific lecturer and an asset to UCSB faculty. His book is so interesting and actually fun to read. Unfortunately while interesting, the concepts can be harder then you think to understand. This class is NOT an easy GE, be prepared to work hard and dedicate time to actually do well in this class.
Professor Gaulin is a great professor. He is very enthusiastic and passionate about his teaching. The lecture is interesting. His class isn't a good choice if you only want to fulfill GE requirement. I studied hard for his class and got an A. Lectures, modules and readings are all required if you want a good grade.
Like someone said, this class definitely should not be taken just to fulfill GEs; you should be interested in genetics/evolution. I thought the midterm and final were fairly challenging, but he does curve the class (in my case, it was about 8%) and 6% of the grade is by participating in an easy experiment. But DON'T expect an easy A by any means.
Lectures and readings are a must! Very hard GE. Would not recommend it for first years unless you're actually really interested in evolution
Very hard midterm and final, wouldn't recommend this class.
It is an absolute MUST to read the textbook and watch modules for this class. The lectures are simply a discussion of the material (so if you don't read or watch the modules), you'll probably do really poorly on the tests. Gaulin is hard to approach so make sure you attend your TA's office hours regularly if you don't understand certain concepts.
Wouldn't recommend this as a GE, but if you study the reader (don't bother getting the genetics book) and the online lectures, you'll be fine. Lectures are repetitive but have a lot of iClicker questions. Section is basically going over the problem sets. Be aware, he uses trick questions A LOT, especially on the midterm and final. Study hard!
Gaulin is a very intelligent professor and really stresses overall concepts during the midterm and final. Lecture modules are a must, although you can can get by without reading the book. Gaulin is passionate about what he teaches and really transcends that passion onto students who love the subject. Wonderful class overall, highly recommend.
A very passionate professor who knows his subject matter thoroughly. I never read the book, just went to lecture and watched the online lecture modules. The test questions can be misleading so make sure to know what the question is asking before answering.
He is incredibly passionate and can answer almost any question that is even just slightly related to the subject matter. I highly suggest you form study groups for this class rather than re-watching modules. This class has made me change my major to Anthropology! I learned immense amounts from this class!
Things to know:The textbook is ridiculously expensive(he wrote it)and there is no library copy. His midterm and final are very difficult and have little to do with what he actually lectures about. The essay had no agreed upon prompt so grades were very low. Overall don't expect to learn anything and expect it to hurt you GPA. Ridiculous class.
Midterms are difficult, watch the lecture modules! Going to class isn't helpful. Spent the entirety of that class on yik yak. Every. Single. Week.
Definitely a good guy and a interesting lecturer but the final and midterm seemed to cover little of what was discussed in class or in the book. I really wanted to like this class but the rather esoteric exams really ruined the whole experience for me.
This is a really tough class. It's almost imperative that you keep up with all the modules. Lecture is basically useless and the book is not necessary. Be sure to read the questions closely on tests. Gaulin is tricky but study and it won't be that bad.
Lectures are completely useless. Makes you listen to lecture modules online that are 45 minutes long where he talks really slow and really isn't clear on anything. Class would be bearable if he actually lectured during class. Problem sets aren't too bad.
A very hard class. You have to watch a module or two which is 45mins each everyday before lecture. Also problem sets are due every week. Lectures are basically a Q&A but there is a lot of i-clicker questions so its mandatory. I did all the work and go to every lecture but still failing the class. Won't recommend.
Overall pretty hard class. Wouldn't recommend it if it's the first time your introduced to BioAnthro. Tests were hard, essays were ok. I enjoyed how he would answer our questions but I wish he would actually have a lecture to present.
Very interesting class but extremely challenging. In order to pass this class, you have to watch every single modules and understand them. He is a great professor, answers all question I bring up. The problem is the class is not curved, and two tests are very tricky. Final replaces midterm grade if you did better, so don't give up too soon.
I took this class last fall and I had a very strong background in biology. If you watch every module and take notes and read every single assigned book chapter and manage to get a few extra credit points through questions and research, there is no reason you should get anything less than a B+ in the class, but I got an A.
The lectures were really interesting as well as the material. It focuses on human evolution and sexual reproduction. The homework assignments are very helpful because the topics found there will be on the exams and sections are mainly focused on these assignments. I would definitely take this course again.
Since ANTH 5 was my first class at UCSB, I did not know what to expect. Professor Gaulin made everything better, from his insightful viewpoints, to the amount he taught, making the hard class not so bad.
Online modules are the key to doing well in this class. They take about an hour to watch but they explain everything. Lectures are useless but he uses iclicker so you have to go. Tests are hard with questions that you have to really examine to get right. I found the class interesting, i would recommend it with a different teacher.
DO NOT TAKE THIS AS A GE. Be prepared to watch all the modules and read both textbooks to get a good grade. Going to lectures is necessary for iclicker points, otherwise you don't learn anything.
Gaulin man... this class was tough for a GE. If you aren't that interested in Australopithecus, take ANTH 2. Please. Otherwise, be prepared to watch hours of online lectures to learn the material. It's like learning evolution again on steroids. Oh and iClicker MATTERS.
Teaches extremely clearly and is quite humorous. Lectures are online and are called "modules." Class time is spent discussing the material and answering questions from the students, along with doing iclicker questions. Tests are kind of tough. Grade is out of 105, but is counted out of 100. Extra credit is also given.
Professor Gaulin is an amazing professor. While I took this as GE, he made the subject matter so fascinating. Attendance is definitely mandatory as you have to answer iClicker questions for participation. Also, very, very important to watch all the modules online before midterms and finals. Overall, slightly challenging class but great experience.
Lectures were such a waste of time, I only went for the iclicker point. He does lectures through pre-recorded videos which are an hour long and painful to watch. During class he just answered questions submited by students. I will admit though the textbook was interesting. Just wish the lectures taught what was in the textbook.
I hated this class so much. DO NOT TAKE AS A GE YOU WILL REGRET IT unless you have a strong background in bio. Modules are long, this class will require a large time commitment.
My only complaint is that I felt like I spent way more time than necessary on this class. The actual lectures were useless and a way for him to answer usually unhelpful questions submitted by students. The online modules were the actual "lectures" and required an extra few hours per week outside of class. Tests were tough and oddly specific.
Book is essential for hw. I spend a lot of time on reading and taking notes but the test is not related. Maybe it is but I don't think like him so never get how he think up questions with the words I know but I have no idea how to apply it. One word, just hard and didn't get a good grade.
I really liked Professor Gaulin. He is super into the subject and I actually did like his style of teaching. You are expected to watch lecture modules beforehand and then he discusses student submitted questions and important topics in class. He provides ample opportunity for extra credit. If you give a slight effort, plus EC, you can get an A.
Pretty good teacher
don't take as a GE. You have to watch online lectures of him talking with a monotone voice, and on top of that you have to go to lecture to listen to him talk because he takes iclicker attendance. it is not worth it unless you are interested in the subject matter.
Gaulin rambles throughout his lectures without giving any clear information. You ask a question and then you aren't really are if you ever received an answer. Even worse, you still have to go to lecture because there are iClicker points. The textbook isn't bad and the diagrams are helpful.
Gaulin posts his lectures online and they go on forever. I get so happy to see the one's that are 30 minutes long because his longer ones put me to sleep. You might be confused so you'll ask him a question but he leaves you more confused. Maybe it was just me but i didn't like the guy.
The course material is actually interesting, the professor is the most boring person on campus. He rambles a lot and the homework is a lot of reading and watching hour long videos of him talking extremely slow. Also, there are problem sets you have to do and mandatory research participation. The course overall really sucks.
I took this class in spring quarter for major requirement and it turned out to be the WORSE class experience I have ever had. Lecture is not taught in class, but you have to watch modules (videos) at home. Those can take up to an hour and more. Extra credit is offered, but that does not matter when what is tested is tough like rock.
Professor cant speak clearly, and a lot of online videos to watch. It's boring, monotone, and difficult. He doesn't teach material in class, he only answer questions given by students online and as a result he couldn't answer them clearly at all. DONT TAKE THIS COURSE UNLESS ITS NECESSARY, OR YOU WILL REGRET IT.
The lectures are a little boring. Just bring other homework for when it's really slow. 2 ways to grade, so you can skip lecture if you test well. I read the chapters, and forwent the online lecture unless I needed clarification. Tests are fine if you know the material well. You DON'T need a strong bio background, the class is more about concepts.
Prof Gaulin is an enthusiastic teacher & really cares about his field of study. He gives great in depth info about evolution, which is really cool even though you're not a Bio Anth major. TA sections are amazing & textbook content is eye-opening. Watch out for those problem sets though, gives extra credit but is a pain if procrastinated upon.
His lectures are brilliant. He is very funny, in a restrained, academic sort of way. Due to the nature of the material, provocative questions often come up regarding the nature of human behavior, and he gives thoughtful answers each and every time. He was one of the reasons why I decided to double-major in Anth, so you know he's one of the best.
Honestly, the class isn't that bad if you put the work in. Readings are absolutely necessary if you don't want to watch most of the video lectures, and going to class helps as he addresses main concepts and student questions. I wouldn't recommend taking it as a GE unless you're interested in the subject. Final replace Mid if your grade is higher.
Many think Gaulin's class is difficult, but it's just that the material can be confusing sometimes. Most of it is pretty straightforward if you do the readings/watch the online lecture modules. Getting clarification from your TA is helpful. The material itself is interesting and relatable. In-class lectures are pointless and unhelpful though.
I found the class to be boring, but it wouldn't have been too bad if I had put in a little more effort
Most Useful to Least Useful: Textbook In Class Lectures Recorded Lectures The book, which he wrote it, is actually quite interesting, and to make sense of lectures in class, keep up with reading. The reading is of reasonable length, but don't procrastinate. Recorded lectures are often not worth watching. Do the 10% extra credit - easy A!
He (video) lectures online so actual lecture attendance is optional, all he does is answer questions posed by the students via GauchoSpace. I passed the class without ever reading the book (that he wrote). Grade is based on the final, midterm, and weekly homework.
Professor Gaulin is a well-respected genius. He is so passionate about his subject and not in an annoying way. He clearly wants his students to succeed and is extremely helpful during office hours. I dropped in on his office hours during a time that I thought was his allotted office hours times but wasn't. He took me in anyway. Such a great man!
Lecture is useless bc he only uses it to answer questions people had about the online lectures, nonetheless iclicker so I recommend attending. reading and hw are interesting. For exams study practice exams, hw, online lectures and it should be hard for you not to get an A. My gpa is a 2.95 and I got an A+, so I think that says something.
You have 4 different places you need to take notes from: his textbook, online lectures, in class lectures, and online articles. You also have weekly "problem sets" as if the notes load wasn't large enough. The tests are all based on his opinions so good luck! 0/10 IMHO
Gaulin is a perfectly nice guy, and really seems to know his stuff. I don't like this class though because there are too many things that you have to keep up with. You have to go to class, watch his online lectures, do the readings, and do the homework. It is just too much for a GE.
He is a good teacher, there is no reason why you shouldn't get an A in his class. He asks you questions that really tests your knowledge of the material. With that in mind, don't take the class if you are not willing to put in the work,
Iclicker is optional, if you do it those points go to your final and midterm, but NOT WORTH IT. He posts his lectures online (BORING, recommend speeding them up) & just answers questions in class. Tons of extra credit opportunities, I did one, bombed midterm, aced weekly homeworks (use examples from textbook!), and still wound up with an A.
Prof. gaulin is a cool dude but the class os awful
Prof. Gaulin is extremely passionate & invested in the class. He is very helpful during office hours and defines one topic many different ways which helps with understanding. If you pay attention in his lectures you'll probably do well.
In order to pass class: READ THE TEXTBOOK, WATCH ONLINE MODULES. Even with that, the tests are EXTREMELY difficult to pass because he words the questions (SUPER TRICKY) according to his opinions. It is super confusing even if you have a strong background in bio. IT IS NOT WORTH TO TAKE AS A GE, the online modules are over 1 hour long...
The class isn't bad the readings are pretty short, especially compared to other teachers. Each chapter is like 10 pages and the book is small. Do the modules, readings, and you should be fine.
I definitely recommend this class. If you do the reading, watch the lectures, and do the problem sets youll do fine. AND he offers extra credit. The lectures are posted online but I recommend you go to class still to get iclicker points. His office hours are super helpful too.
Gaulin is great. Clear lectures and will clarify any questions if asked . The tests are kind of tough but as long as you ask questions, do the problem sets, and read the book- which is written by him and SUPER helpful, you can easily get an A. 2 grading schemes (u can choose if u want your icklicker points to count or not)
okay so gaulin is okay there is a lot of work that goes into it. You have to watch the lectures before the class and do an after lecture quiz. You get to use a sheet of notes front and back. and he offers extra credit.
Not sure if it was it was mostly due to him being the professor, but this class was super interesting. Gave me a unique new perspective of the world we live in. You'll have to watch his video lectures and do weekly homework assignments, but getting an A in this class is very doable - there are lots of resources for you to study.
Gaulin is great at clearly getting his point across and is a fan of explaining things in multiple ways until you get it. If you need help, he's very accessible and if those times don't work for you, he will always answer emails. Go to his office hours, it is extra credit. He also let's you use a page (front and back) of notes on tests.
Easy A
If you like challenging, non-memorizing information kind of questions, then I am sure you will do fine. Lots of lectures online and attached with quizzes, extra credit is offered, and homework on the weekly basis. Is it an easy A? Unless you like complicated answers to oversimplified questions and vice versa, then take his class.
Gaulin is very passionate about the subject, which makes online videos and in-class lectures interesting. There are quizzes online for each video, which are tricky. Midterm and final questions can be misinterpreted, and really test your knowledge on concepts. With extra credit and iClicker scheme an A is possible, but you must put in effort.
Gaulin cares about his students and really wants them to learn. Posts all the lectures online and uses class time to review the lectures and answer questions. Loves when students come to office hours. Used textbook to study for midterm and final (super helpful) but was not necessary as long as you watched lectures online. Lots of chances for EC
Prof. Gaulin is great at teaching and offers extra credit just by showing up to office hours. However, his tests are really difficult even with a full sheet of notes. Class average for midterm was a 65% and no curve. Would not take again. Ended up with a 69.8% in the class and he would not round up to 70% for a C-.
He makes everything clear and interesting. He will give handout about what you need to learn about the course at the beginning of the quarter His lectures are amazing, both online videos and inclass lectures.
Such a kind human, he really cares about his students. The class is surprisingly difficult- the tests sneak up on you- study hard, and if you go to class, you should be okay. If you don't go to class you're making your life a lot harder than it has to be!!
In the Spring 2018 lecture, our midterm average was around a 52% and he does not curve. His tests are worded so weirdly and he makes it so uncecessariky difficult for his students. You must read the whole textbook in order to get a full understanding of the course, and I recommend going to office hours a lot, its also extra credit.
This class is hard and requires a lot of work to be put in. Go to office hours!!! Try to stay up to date with the lectures and you will be fine. I got an F on the midterm but an A on the final because I went to office hours and studied the book/lectures. Overall ended with an -A in the class, its possible.
yeah you have to read, but the book is not that bad. gaulin is really passionate abt this class and he's a really good professor! jus make sure you go to lecture and ask any questions that you need to. overall cool class and cool professor! put in a lil work (like literally jus space out the reading)and you'll get a good outcome!
Professor Gaulin is really good about breaking down bioanth to make it understandable. Make sure that you go to office hours, and he is great at taking the time to explain difficult concepts with you. Its an awesome and interesting class.
Great teacher, passionate about anthropology and its contagious haha, his test are easy, some trick questions here and there, id take him all four years if i could.
Lectures are all online which is convenient. In-class lectures are very boring, but you only need to go if you want your final and midterm to be worth less. He is very nice and knowledgeable on what he teaches.
The professor is a sweetheart, but the online lectures lack preparation. The material is pretty intense, and it was hard to learn while hearing "um" after every sentence. If you can get past his lack of public speaking skills, you should be able to pass with flying colors.
Truely a gem of a professor. He clearly knows his stuff and is super passionate about what he's teaching which is really refreshing. I wish I could take him again. Do not neglect easy points (extra credit, homework, and quizzes) because those points will add up quickly.
Gaulin is very passionate about what he teaches. This class takes a lot of work in order to fully grasp the material. It was a very interesting class there is a textbook by Gaulin that has everything he talks about. Always go to his office hours it's beneficial.
Professor Gaulin is a wonderful man. He's very passionate about what he teaches. The class, however, was tough. The lectures are uploaded in advance, so in-class lectures are virtually pointless. There are quizzes attached to the lectures, so make sure to try on those. The grading scheme helps you get a good grade. I struggled , but ended with a B.
Professor Gaulin is extremely passionate about the subject which makes the class engaging and interesting. However, this class does take a lot of work. He gives at home lecture videos that can be up to an hour each night with supplemental quizzes. Midterm and Final need to be studied for, but it is possible. Hard class, but super interesting.
Hard test, but an easy A if you spend time reading the textbook. Don't forget to visit TAs or professor himself each week for the extra points.
Gaulin is amazing! I've taken two classes with him and he's the most intelligent and interesting prof ever. He writes the textbooks for this class and anth 5 so all the lectures and chapters go together perfectly. Super cool class, I actually enjoyed studying!
This class is difficult, but if you make an effort to understand the concepts, it's definitely manageable.
Gaulin was a good professor that was nice and very passionate about his subject. He is always available for office hours and offers extra credit. Overall, I would recommend Gaulin and the class to anybody even remotely interested in the sciences.
Prof. Gaulin made me want to switch majors to Anthropology. The course material itself was super interesting to me, and he provides anecdotal information that helped me get something out of the course. His in-person lectures drone on, and he doesn't teach new material during them - his actual lectures are online; he only answers questions in class.
The annoying part of this class is watching weekly 45-60min online videos and answering quiz questions--that DO count for your grade. Problem sets aren't too bad (weekly) and the rest of your grade is midterm/ final. Know the lectures and text to do decent on the tests. Come to class, its worth the iclicker, GO TO OFFICE HOURS for the extra credit!
The online lectures are pretty unnecessary. Read the book and attend lecture for iclicker and you'll be fine.
Lectures are boring but worth the iclicker points. Reading the book is more helpful than watching the online lectures. His tests are way trickier than iclicker/problem sets, but he lets you bring a cheat sheet(!!) and the MT score can be replaced by the final. Plus, enough extra credit is offered to help you pass.
Best class I have taken so far at UCSB! He really cares about the subject and makes it really interesting
Very enthusiastic. His grading system makes for an easy A. Great class.
The way he conducts class is a little unconventional, you watch the lectures outside of class and then he goes over questions/homework during the lecture. You need you iclicker for participation but going to lecture clarifies a lot of the topics. He is very knowledgable about the subject and it is overall straightforward, but difficult at times.
A great professor if you really want to get into the subject details, very insightful and a wonderful resource to learn under. Perhaps not the best professor for an easy A
It is evident that Prof Gaulin cares about what he teaches and is passionate about it (I mean he did write the book that we read in the class). He is very encouraging for everyone to go to office hours and loves to answer any questions you might have!
Material is interesting but professor is not. Despite being in a pandemic/studying from home, he offered little accommodations. He replaced midterms/final with 6 awfully worded mini-exams worth >50% of the total grade. You read 2-3 chapters, watch 2 lectures,2 Zoom meetings,1 FRQ set,1 exam per week. sent us a 'withdraw' link 1 week before finals.
I truly believe that Gaulin is a cool guy and is a great professor, but his intelligence translates into his own exams and sometimes that is not the best way to teach a class that is just trying to absorb the material. His mini-exam questions are very difficult and its so disappointing when you spend hours studying just to fail the exam.
I loved Professor Gaulin! The class is lecture heavy, and the exams are pretty much only about them. There is an additional textbook as well that goes into more detail but I rarely read it and still got an A+ in the class. If you keep up with lectures and the mini-quizzes (after each lecture) you'll definitely do fine. I took this as an area C GE.
Lectures are long, pre recorded, quiz after each. Textbook and lectures are redundant, only really need 1 or the other. 6 FRQ assignments basically free points if your TA is lazy. 6 17-18 point exams, difficult but possible. Gaulin cares a lot and wants you to succeed, very intelligent and passionate. Class is well adapted for online, manageable.
Avoid this class if you can. 50% of the grade is based on 6 mini exams all of which are extremely difficult. Most of the questions are vague and have little to no correlation with what we learn in class. For an intro course it is very difficult and the professor assumes we're experts in the field.
I loved taking his class! You can get up to 10 points extra credit for just asking questions and the 6 FRQs are completion credit. The tests are fairly difficult, just because of how he words the questions. Just take your time on the tests and use the book and lectures and you should be ok.
Prof. Gaulin is a great professor and an overall great guy. He made me genuinely fascinated in a class taken for GE. Grading is clear but hes firm, wont round or anything (but extra credit is available). Quizzes on each lecture were pretty easy but the 6 mini exams werent. Be careful on the tests cuz 1 option is always REAL close but wrong.
I genuinely am going to double major in anthropology because of this class. The textbook is interesting and fun to read, and the chapters aren't too lengthy. The lectures could be interesting, and he'll expand on topics that might show up on the mini-exams. As long as you have good notes and do the mini-exams carefully (no time limit!), you'll ace.
Prof. Gaulin is one of my favorite professors, and he taught us a lot of interesting material. He is just so knowledgeable. I think he really cares about the students, and he wants us to learn things from his lecture. This class is not super easy, but as long as you work hard, you can definitely get an A.
Prof. Gaulin is really knowledgeable, and I think he really enjoys teaching the material. This class is so interesting to me. It is not super easy, and you have to work hard, but it is not impossible to get A.
Prof is very knowledgeable, and by far one of the more interesting classes taken but definitely, he'll make you work for the grade, majority of the grade is based off on 6 mini exams that are ridiculously hard and the majority of his lectures are very long.
I loved this class! Professor Gaulin is very nice and is obviously very passionate about this subject. There wasnt a final and the mini exams were hard but doable. Overall, I found the course to be very interesting and Professor Gaulin clearly wants his students to succeed.
Professor Gaulin is certainly very knowledgable: the textbook used is written by him. He explains concepts well, so the class is quite interesting. Keep in mind that sometimes small details mentioned by him in class can pop up in quizzes and exams. The grading system caters students during online learning. But the quizzes are hard.
He doesn't teach. He can't run an online class. He's a bad teacher who expects you to buy his $60 book and never answers questions. He likes to pretend that he wants you to succeed but he really doesn't care. He was one of my first professors at UCSB and I will never again even consider the subject of anthropology because he absolutely ruined it.
His lectures do you no good on any of the exams. His exams are worded extremely poorly making it difficult as hell. Other than that his assignments are busy worked which is graded for completion. Would not recommend his class to anyone
I thought ANTH 5 with Professor Gaulin was super interesting! Lectures are pre-recorded and usually around an hour long, but you can watch them on 1.5x speed. Mini-exams (6 in the quarter) can be pretty tricky with wording, but they're not impossible. Would recommend going to office hours because he's very knowledgeable and easy to talk to (IMO).
The class is ridiculously difficult for an undergraduate intro course. Grade is mostly determined by six "mini-exams", all of which having vague, misleading and stupidly difficult questions that relate little to what's taught in lecture and assume you're an expert in the field. Professor Gaulin also doesn't curve. Do not take as a GE class!
Nice guy but very difficult class. I dont recommend taking this class as a GE. Grade is based on 6 mini exams that are extremely difficult and don't really pertain to the lecture concepts. It seems he doesnt want his students to succeed. I did fine in this course but dont recommend it.
I honestly loved this class and the professor! He was always so passionate about what he was teaching and the material was very fun to learn about. Lectures were recorded and Sections were optional. There was usually a weekly assignment and occasional mini exams that were tough, but doable. Extra credit is offered as well! Would take it again!
The homework is pretty light and the lectures are easy to understand. He is a very wholesome old man that is passionate about teaching his subject. Id say its pretty easy to get a good grade in this class. Although this class might get a bit boring, I found it overall interested and a nice biology refresher.
Very difficult as an undergrad course. T.A admitted to not understanding material and that course is grad level. Don't recommend taking as a gen-ed. Lectures and quizzes are so confusing and often misleading
he clearly cares about the topic and tries hard but the tests are extremely difficult and you don't receive any sort of study guide. lectures out of class are LONG and hard to keep up with. overall, fine but would not take again.
He's sweet and passionate about what he's teaching. But, the class is way too difficult and no matter how many times you read over the material, the exams are INSANELY difficult, and they make up a lot of your grade. Studied hard but was still lost. It's like he expects his students to be as good at the material as he is. Huge headache.
Super difficult consider its a lower level class. If science is not your strong suit, do not take. Read that one more time, do not take.
Interesting class format but overall very interesting!
He is the best professor I ever met. His pedagogy is not about letting you barely remember the materials and the definitions. He wants you to understand the concepts. He is very kind to his students, especially during office hours. He will keep solving your problem until you fully understand. Frankly, his exams are not easy, but still very fun.
Although his lectures are a little hard to follow, he is a very passionate professor and his office hours are extremely helpful and engaging.
Honestly the hardest class Ive taken at UCSB. Lectures are super hard to follow. The material was interesting but the midterm and final were super difficult!!! I would not recommend this class unless youre taking it pass/ no pass.
the subject itself was interesting and isn't that difficult to an extent, but it takes a lot of consistent effort to not fall behind! preferred learning from his book over the online lectures. his midterm and final include many trick questions, but as long as you submit everything on time and try to aim for the extra credit you'll pass.
Very passionate professor but teaches almost exclusively in examples. Textbook is a lot clearer for understanding concepts. Midterm was semi difficult and definitely needed a lot of studying for. Problem sets every few weeks weren't too hard, low homework. Definitely hard class to conceptualize, easier when you know his way of wording.
Heavy outside class workload with lectures/readings and quizzes. Hard to understand concepts in short time and midterm/final questions worded very difficult.
If you are ready to put in some effort, and go to office hours, you will not fail.
I took this class on a whim and ended up loving it! There is a lot of reading but the textbook was written by him and was a very easy read! Gaulin is a great lecturer and breaks down complicated concepts well, he uses lots of examples. Tests can be tricky so I recommend going to office hours and reaching out to your TA.
Great professor! You can tell that he is passionate about the subject
Prof. Gaulin conveys topics and content excellently. There is about 6 problem sets throughout the course that take about 2 hours each. For each lecture there is a small multiple choice quiz, 3 questions. Only downside is you have to buy the textbook, which is about $70.
I took this class to satisfy my prep for my major and did not regret it. Prof. Gaulin is very knowledgeable and passionate about the topic and strives to push his students without going overboard. The homework is graded by effort so you have room to play with the ideas before the final. Overall, an interesting class taught by a wonderful professor.
Very passionate about his subject, super eager to share knowledge with students. You can tell because of all the examples he gives. Was super accommodating to students during the TA strike.
Prof Gaulin was amazing! He explains concepts in a very intuitive way and gives lots of examples to back up his theories. He is always willing to go over why the theories and models in his lecture make sense. Deeply knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the subject. Take ANTH5, you won't regret it.
This class is easily one of my favorites because of the fascinating topics we'd cover and apply to real life. You'll fall behind if you don't focus and make sure you understand the key concepts. Sections are based off of problem sets so don't forget to complete them on time! Gaulin is very understanding and his lectures are crucial.
Super easy class to get away with doing nothing all quarter. His lectures are very boring and not necessary if you watch online lectures and read the textbook. The only difficult part is the final.
Highly recommend!!!! Learn a lot!!
no, just no. i took this class for a ge and there were no other classes available and i regret it. online lectures that are over an hour every week and when you show up to lecture in person its the exact same thing, waste of time, problem sets are long and at times hard to understand. wouldn't recommend as a ge and sorry if this is a requirement.
Heavy workload: read a chapter, watch lecture, short quiz before class. 6 long problem sets. Extra credit by asking questions.Textbook very logical, good metaphors for understanding. Lecture repetitive if already understand material I'd say don't take it as a GE bc of the workload but it's a really great course if you're interested in the subject
Professor Gaulin is a good lecturer but makes you watch video lectures and take quizzes before class and he just repeats the same material. It's a waste of time going to class, just make sure you do the problem sets and daily quizzes. I'm a psych major and I took it as an area 3 requirement, maybe choose a different class if you can
Took as a req for PBS and deeply regret it. You could ace all the extra busy work he gives, but getting a good grade is still tough. He posts online lectures and then the "real lecture" is just asking questions about the online lecture. Honestly nobody I know has got higher than a C in his class. Not worth it.
Not a fan of Gaulin, his lectures were confusing and the textbook is basically illegible (he wrote it and it's mandatory). TA office hours saved my grade
Do NOT take as a GE; only take this class if it is required for your major; it is unnecessarily hard for a GE. His lectures are long and confusing. He wrote the textbook, so it is also, long and confusing. I personally found it difficult to stay engaged during lectures. ALSO- beware, for iClicker, you have to get the questions right to get credit.
Wouldn't take this class unless you HAVE to. A shame because the content is interesting, but the exam questions are misleading and intentionally designed to trick you. I-clicker Q's in class are not only pretty difficult, but graded on ACCURACY and worth 16% of total grade. The worst I have done in a GE class so far, if taking for GE, take P/NP.
I-clicker is a large portion of the grade and he grades it based off of accuracy and not just attendance. TA's can be pretty strict graders on the homework problem sets each week, I never got a perfect grade on one. Lectures definitely aren't mandatory but he makes it so they are with the I-clicker attendance.
Do not take this class for a GE. TAs were tough graders on all problem sets and never explained why they took off points, but they would always mark you down no matter what. Professor seems like a nice dude, but lectures were boring, iclicker based off of accuracy, would genuinely try to trick you on tests.
Prof Gaulin is very passionate and knowledgeable about the topic and is accessible outside of class during his office hours. Lectures are based on the homework he provides in Canvas. Coming to class is necessary to get the iclicker points that determines your grades. Tests are heavily graded so study for beforehand.
really interesting content, but really big workload (2 recorded+2 in person lectures a week). Test questions were often confusing and vague. iclicker takes attendance so lectures are essentially mandatory
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR A GE. The only way to pass the exams (which are designed to trick you) is if you know everything written in the textbook (that he wrote). While the material is interesting, Gaulin and his TAs have no idea what is happening 90% of the time. The TAs are as clueless as I am and mine didn't offer much help at all.
hes super passionate, but its hard to stay focused during his online and in person lectures. I barely was able to secure a B, you couldn't go into the final or midterm unprepared, like at all. i think hes alright though, def a nice guy.
Surprisingly I was able to get an A which I doubted myself for all quarter. Although everyone says this course is hard, I eventually found out you just need to put in the effort to get an A. Here are some tips to good in the class. 1) READ THE SYLLABUS 2) Scan textbook in library for FREE 3) Go to office hours even if you think you got it!
Textbook isn't necessarily needed, many people I knew got away with not reading it. However, I do believe he is better at explaining the topics within his book than in person lectures. Tests are also tricky but cheat sheets are allowed. Overall, he is kind and very knowledgeable (he can answer every question you have).
Prof Gaulin is super knowledgable, and you can basically ask him anything about his field. The BEST professor i've ever met at UCSB!!
Interesting content, but the exams and iClicker questions are designed to trick you. While the professor is knowledgeable, the class is quite challenging. unstuckstudy ai can be a helpful study tool alongside the course textbook.
