Difficult at first, but it gets MUCH easier. But you have to remember that it's organic chem and it's supposed to be tough. Do the work and take notes. A lot of people say he's mean, but I think he's very nice.
He rocks-first quiz was a little rough, but everything gets easier from there. He makes orgo sooo clear. He's a little dry, kinda blunt and comes off a bit arrogant at first, but give him a chance. he/s actually is really nice. if you take notes & do the book problems you will do well. reccomended
He's a nice guy. Class is kinda tough at first but it gets better. I think he's the easiest of all the profs for orgo. His humor is a bit dry but he does his best to help you understand. Trys to teach you what you need to know, not just what's in the book. Makes it as easier as it can get.
very good approach at working through problems
This guy is an arrogant jerk. He expects everyone to have a PhD in Chemistry like him, even though he screws up all the time. You barely have enough time to finish his quizzes, he doesn't give partial credit, and he has refused to answer questions bc "we won't be able to ask questions on the MCAT"
Humor is dry, but that is bc he isn't from the mid-west, this guy is interesting. If you are willing to learn and work hard, this is the prof for you. Limited number of points in class and he doesn't give partial credit, so you really have to know your stuff. Give him a chance, bc he is a good guy.
good at teaching orgo
This guy is The Man when it comes to teaching organic chemistry. The class is very structured, expectations are clearly defined, and the tests are very fair. Lectures are thorough and he is able to make a good connection between lectures and the book material.
A wonderful teacher. States exactly what he will expect you to know for quizzes and exams. Use his office hours if you can. For a class that is supposed to be so difficult, it really is not that awful.
i was dreading this class for years before taking it, but ended up with an EASY A! i strongly recommend Gross. very young and knows his stuff inside and out! you wont be surprized on the test - his study guide is similar to the tests. the best orgo teacher here!
DG(Dr. Gross) is awesome!! He is so straightforward in his expectations. If you don't want to be surprised, DG is the man for you. Highly recommended to anyone who is absolutely dreading orgo(like i was).
G-Ross rocks my socks. He is one of the best profs I've had here. He is really understanding, straightforward, and he knows his****. Really personable, too. Great guy, super-smart.
Gross is awesome. He made the subject matter much easier than I thought it would be.
Hard to follow along in lecture. Tells you what is going to be on the test. Tough grading scale. Thorough review sessions. Not very much extra credit. I like Dr. Fletcher a whole lot better. Gross wasn't that bad, but wasn't that good either.
Overall a good teacher. He tells you from the beginning what he wants and doesn't give extra credit. His tests are a little long for the 50 min time period but if you do your work and keep up it shouldn't be that bad.
Dr. Gross is a very knowledable teacher with many years of experience under his belt. And besides that, he is one big cutie pie. Besides he usually buys you lunch, extra points for getting food and he is HOOOOOOOTTTT! Ouch!
Freakin rad dude.
The Best Organic Prof, take him you will not regret this one. But you may have to crack a book if you want an A.
Easily the sweetest dude in the chem department. You will have to work at the class but he's by far the best one to take. Take notes and study...go to his review sessions and orgo wont be so bad.
Probably the worst classroom experience of my college career. Dr Gross' flippant, arrogant attitude made going to class a chore but if you want any chance of passing with a decent grade, you must go. Tests are 200% more difficult than material covered in class and he give no leeway when grading. Don't reccommend taking him EVER
Very clear. Dry sence of humor, most students miss his jokes. Tests are straight forward, not many surprises. Good lectures. Extra Credit on every test and quiz. Recomend
Not a bad teacher; lots of dry humor, and his lectures are detailed and useful. I found the class wicked hard, though, especially with his habit of springing unpleasant surprises on the exams. Study hard if you take him.
If you are pre-med and don't get a strong A in this class, then its time to think of some new career plans. Very clear on what will be on exams. Highlights the important concepts. Makes a few mistakes, but doesnt hold students accountable for them. Take him.
He's a really great teacher, and his tests are really straightforward. He makes Orgo about as easy as it can get. Study hard and you'll be fine. He's by far the best option for Orgo!!

If you don't get an 'A' in this class, then you are probably going to dental or osteopathic school. Gross is straight-forward and writes a good test. Perhaps it would be nice if he gave us a bit more time on them.. Also, he can come off a bit as a jerk if you ask for extra help or ask him about a grade on a test/quiz.
Good teacher, lectures are straightforward and he knows his stuff. Doesn't assign homework, although he strongly suggests you do problems from the book, which will help you tremendously. A nice guy, but he went off on our class once and told us we'd never become doctors cuz a lot of us did poorly on a quiz. I'd still recommend him, though!
Gross is an awesome teacher. He made Orgo waaay easier than Gen Chem. He makes concepts easy to understand, and he always shuts down this annoying suck up kid in class so that is entertaining as well. DEFINITELY go with Gross, he is without a doubt the best orgo teacher at Creighton.
Good teacher, but fast.. sometimes he makes you feel to quit school. He wants you perfect and if you are not then you can't be a doctor or pharmacist.. gives no partial credit even if 90% of the question is correct
Yah I agree good teacher but his grading sucks. the way he grades exams is ridiculous. full credit or no credit. I won't take him for orgo II
Nice guy, hard class. I recommend him though.
achiral
Dont ever go to his office for help especially on old test or quiz!!! he make you feel like a third grader
worst chem prof ever. he gets paid to make you feel stupid and that you shouldn't be at creighton. lectures too fast and tests are horrible! office help is NO help. if you don't understand a concept, and you read and do problems, he pretty much calls you liar. so for the sake of your time, money and grade: TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
I LIKE THE WAY HE TEACHS. LOTS OF EXTRA CREDITS. I RECOMMEND THIM TO ANYONE WHO KNOWS LITTLE ABOUT ORGANIC.
not as easy as some say. learned alot and a nice guy. went really deep into some explanations in office hours sometimes though.
If you cannot handle Dr. Gross change your major, by far the best option for organic. Not an easy professor but the easiest in the department for organic.
Not too hard at all. He is a nice guy and considering it's chemistry this class wasn't bad. I highly recommend him.
I can't really compare him to my gen chem teacher, and I didn't have anyone else for Organic so I don't know how he is compare to other organic instructors, but overall, I learned a lot in this class. tough grader though.
Dr. Gross is a great teacher. You learn alot, tests aren't that hard, but you do really have to come to class.
Arguably the easiest of the Organic profs. His tests are straight forward and he does all-class extra credit after every test. His lectures are very succinct with good examples, but he only covers many things once. Gross is pretty much the man while also being a sarcastic chem nerd.
Dr. Gross is a very fun teacher. His lectures are very strait forward, and he will always help. My grade is not exactly wonderful, but if you study, you will do well.
AWESOME.Extremely clear and willing to help.He sticks around after class for questions. Also, he is so straightforward in explaining concepts as well as expecations for exams. He pretty much tells you what will be on the test and gives examples of what will get you full points. And he gives out a ton of extra credit-at least 5 pts for every test
He is a wonderful teacher. By far the best out of any of the Organic Chem teachers. Very clear on what will be on exams and frequently asks the class if they have questions.
Wonderful Teacher. Tells you exactly what type of questions will be on quizes and exams. Frequenyly asks class if they have any questions during class.
straightforward but have to know your $%$% to get an A. Do the book problems.
Very clear but only gives partial credit on tests...You may THINK you know the material but make sure you can preform on tests. I really know the subject but my grade doesn't really reflect that fact.
If you take Dr. Gross for Organic Chemistry you will have to study a lot for his tests and quizzes. The tests and quizzes are not terribly difficult if you understand the theory behind the problem. However, he does not give partial credit for your work. You have to be very dedicated and willing to put in the time for a good grade.
I like Gross. His tests tho not easy are straightforward. He's always willing to answer questions.
You can't say you don't know what's expected of you, but you still have to know hw to do the problems really well. Office hours are good and I love party shirts!!!
I love Dr. Gross's teaching. He keeps class interesting even at 8:30am. Tests can be tricky but do the problems in the book and you'll be fine. He teaches by example a lot so if that is your style I def. recommend Gross. 4 tests, 3 25pt quizes (final is a normal test not cumulative)
I definitely recommend Dr. Gross for Organic. While he does teach by example, he's also big on helping you understand the big concepts, which makes the subject much more interesting and doable. He does throw some curveballs on tests but he warns you about them beforehand so attend lecture and you should be fine.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Dr. Gross is not nice at all, thinks that he is funny, and does not care about helping students at all. On top of that, his tests are stupid...The 100 point tests only have a few questions, each worth 10-25 points a piece. Does not give any partial credit. Take somebody that is nicer
I liked going to class despite the 830 time. You have t go to class to get an A even though he doesn't take attendance.
Read the book first semester. Go to every class second semester. Tells you the type of questions on every test, so there's no surprises but you have to really know it to get an A. Oh yeah, looks great in brownfits.
LOVE this man. Gross is very straightforward about what is expected of you throughout the class and doesn't throw any curve balls... just study the material and read his questions thoroughly. He definitely increased my interest in Orgo throughout the first quarter. Doesn't give much partial credit, but again, tells you exactly what's on the exam.
Gross is a pretty chill guy. Overall, O. Chem. is very manageable with him. He is crystal clear in lecture about the material and expectations. He even tells you exactly what the questions on the exam will be beforehand. You just have to put in the time and effort to be successful.
Dr.Gross is straightforward and his tests are as easy as it can get(he even gives extra credit on tests). The only thing is that his writing can be difficult to read at times if you're too far away, so try and sit in the front row. The people who say he is unfair and difficult probably wouldn't do any better in any of the other orgo classes.
He's really rude
Dr. Gross is great. He is very cynical, but really great if you're on his good side. Do the work and you'll be fine, but you have to do the work. His tests are straight forward, but there's not partial credit. He's really good about giving extra credit, but you have to show up for class. Dr. Gross is the greatest.
He's very clear on materials but very mean when you try to ask a question! especially if you do not understand it
Gross is a clear teacher and always willing to help you if you don't understand something. I was extremely nervous about taking orgo, but I'm glad I took it from Gross because he made my life a lot easier. Take Gross he's amazing!!
Dr. Gross was straightforward. I didn't want to take this class but ended up liking it. Attendance isn't required but you need to go to do well, especially at the end.
Orgo is going to be hard but he makes it manageable. Only 5 100 pt. tests a semester & final non-cumulative. Very clear in lectures- kindof a mumbler so sit up front. COME TO CLASS. He occasionally does in class extra credit. Do ALL the book problems and go to office hours- v. helpful in office. I ended up really liking him and the class.
Sassy and serious.
Dr. Gross is a straight shooter, you know exactly what to expect. He doesn't tolerate brown-nosers which is a nice change to other science teachers at CU, he just expects you to work hard and i found that when you put the work in you get the grade you want. No surprises, very helpful in office hours. Recommend taking textbook notes before lecture
honestly a very straightforward guy. tells you the types of test questions before the test, and most problems come from the book or class examples. so treat the chapter problems as daily homework and ask questions about what you don't know how to do. gives some extra credit during class so be sure to go to class and be attentive!
Dr Gross is hilariously sarcastic and sassy, but he's also abrasive and rude. Although attendance is optional, he will probably refuse to help you or answer your questions if you skip class. His tests are very straightforward because he tells you exactly what types of problems he will ask, however they are short so every problem is worth a lot.
Dr Gross is one of my favorite profs at Creighton. He is really specific about what you need to do. He was really helpful in office hours when I did book problems. Be prepared to work and you can get an A in the class.
Dr. Gross taught the first three weeks of Orgo 1 summer session. I found him to be a very good teacher. Once you get used to his teaching method, the class isn't really that bad. He tells you exactly what type of questions to expect on the exam and is always willing to answer questions. His humor made the 90 minute lectures bearable.
He is unapproachable outside of class. He assumes all of his students are stupid unless they can prove him otherwise. There is no partial credit for this course, it's all about the final answer. The only thing good about him is that he sometimes gives a few points of extra credit once a semester and he has a dry sense of humor.
Great teacher, cares about our grades, doesn't focus on memorization as much as concepts. Class is difficult, but he teaches the material in a way you can understand.
He is an amazing teacher. He is always trying to make you understand why you are learning orgo. I like this class more than I thought I would. Definitely recommend taking.
Do yourself a favor and take Dr. Gross! His class is straightforward and he emphasizes concepts over details. 5 exams during the semester (non-cumulative final), and he tells you exactly what to know before each test. Extra credit Qs are rare, but a few times per semester he offers extra credit just for showing up to class.
Had him for summer orgo and he was a good professor! Straight forward with what he wants and his lecture notes are clear and concise. Do all of the book problems and go over your notes and it shouldn't be difficult to get an A. Also his tests are short, so the questions are worth a lot of points, but if you know the material you'll be fine!
Lectures well then spends most of the class going over practice problems to prepare for the exams. He's intimidating at first and makes the second exam super hard to scare people into dropping, but he lightens up after that. Five exams, 20% of the total grade each.
This class is the most difficult class Ive ever taken and I wasnt even able to finish it. Grosss lectures are very straightforward and make sense but you get to the test and its 8 questions and there is no partial credit. If you dont have perfect understanding of everything you will not pass.
Take Dr Gross for organic chemistry. His lectures are clear and interesting for chemistry. You have to go to class and understand the practice examples in the notes. You can only get extra credit if you go to class but it is a reasonably easy A if you put in the time.
Dr. Gross is incredibly unapproachable. If you go in to ask a question during office hours, he most likely will be very rude and passive aggressively insult your intelligence. He does not seem to care about helping students understand if he thinks the answer should be obvious. I would not take his class again.
There is no way around organic chemistry at Creighton. Gross is really straightforward but you HAVE to go to class and understand the notes and read the book. If you do that Gross is a straightforward A. Most exams seem straight from the book and the notes. If you don't it is better to take someone else. Use his office hours!
Dr. Gross is the best OChem prof. He is very straightforward with what he expects from you. There is always time to ask questions in class and he explains things very well. There is some random extra credit so go to class. Do all of the book problems and read the text. Many questions are right out of the book. His grading scale is a little high.
I'm going to miss organic chemistry. They should have organic 3 so you can finish the book. Gross is a good lecturer and made it very clear what had to be learned.
Dr. Grosss organic 1 is tough. Especially the summer one. He is a no nonsense kind of guy, but he truly cares for the success of the students. His exams are not easy but his exam & teaching style prepare students well for the MCAT and other standardized tests. Read ahead, go to class, and do practice problems, and it should be straightforward.
Took him for the first half of orgo 1 in the summer. May not seem like it, but he cares for the student. Exam questions are tough but doing all the book problems once (if not multiple times) should prepare well. Read ahead of lecture and attend every one. Definitely try to find the answer to any question in the book before asking him.
I am an honors student, and I failed his class. 2 other honors kids as well. Believe me, I studied. He will never answer his emails and is really condescending. I absolutely hate his class, not just because of my grade, but for him as a person is super intimidating. I would absolutely not recommend. Fletcher or Miller are way better.
Gross tells you the types of questions on the tests ahead of time. A lot of the test comes from the book questions so get a solution manual. Extra credit for coming to class random. Im taking again in the spring. Pretty easy A if you put in the time.
I withdrew from this class halfway through the semester because I did not want to be pre-med anymore. Attendance isn't mandatory but I found it beneficial. Take good notes, he talks fast. Definitely read the book before the lecture, it helps. Definitely takes a lot of time out of your life, so be prepared. Doesn't give partial credit on exams
Gross is passionate about chemistry. Half the test questions are right from the book. If you go to class and put in the work you will do fine.
Gross is my favorite professor at creighton. He is always explaining why we need to know what we cover in class. I like organic more than I thought I would. He has been really helpful in office hours.
Skips over material that other orgo professors teach. If you're just trying to get through the material and plan on taking him for both semesters, that's fine. His attitude was too off-putting for me, so I switched professors for the second semester. Those of us who had Gross are already behind because he skipped important aspects of synthesis.
Orgo is hard but easy to do well. You wont get the grade you want if you dont put in the time. I recommend his office hours,
Dr. Gross is not very nice or approachable and has trouble with social skills. He has great lectures and is very knowledgeable on the subject. He WILL make you feel bad at some point in the class (accusing you of cheating or shaming the class for a bad average). However as a chem major, I do respect his content and would take again, easy orgo class
Most definitely one of my favorite profs!! I made sure to enroll in his Ochem class for both semesters. He cares and believes in his students' abilities (he is NOT trying to shame or accuse anyone) - if you put in some work you'll do great. He's personable during office hours and is very helpful. I highly recommend taking Dr. Gross!!
Dr. Gross is amazing. I enjoyed attending his lectures. He is very intelligent and funny and explains complicated topics in an easy-to-understand fashion. To study for exams, I would recommend reviewing notes/practice problems from class and reading the textbook/doing all of the textbook problems. Extra credit is offered during random classes!
Dr. Gross sucked me into chemistry in the first class. He makes chemistry about real things. If you go to class and understand the problems in class and work on the chapter problems you should get an A. I definitely recommend him for organic.
Dr. Gross, while fine at relaying information about Organic Chemistry, was incredibly disrespectful of students in his class, has no interested in being a professor or helping students succeed, and lacks the Jesuit values that Creighton boasts about. A truly bad human being and teacher, but knows about organic chemistry. Publicly shames students.
Dr Gross is very clear and concise. You can tell he wants his students to do well. You have to go class to get the extra credit. He is very clear how to prepare for tests and they are very straightforward.
Dr Gross does a great job teaching real life expectations. He made class interesting even at 825 am. I definitely recommend taking organic with Gross.
My favorite class at Creighton.
Best organic professor at Creighton. Tests are your entire grade, but some EC offered. Awesome lecturer, and very clear about what he wants you to know- he's not here to trick you. Definitely take him for ochem if you can. Also- this is the one college class I've taken where the textbook is useful. Do practice problems/ read if you're confused.
I actually enjoyed this class even at 8 am. Gross is super straightforward but expects you to know your stuff.
Dr. Gross is an excellent teacher. He is a bit unapproachable/intimidating, and moves very fast at times. Definitely use the book for practice problems, but exam questions aren't always similar to book problems. Offers extra credit if you show up for class. Explains topics really well, made things easy to understand most of the time.
Dr. Gross made Orgo very fun! He always made connections to the real world which really helps! Only 5 Exams you are graded on! Exam questions are based on problems you do in class and in the book. Please use the BOOK! The book really helps! He doesn't test you on topics not covered in lecture! There is not enough time to cover everything in Orgo!
Dr. Gross was super straight forward with what is expected. The lectures are interesting and makes it easy to understand.
GO TO CLASS. It is very easy to get lost in orgo, so stay on top of it. He goes through lecture kind of fast, so it helps to read ahead so you have a clue of what is going on. Tests can be hard, but if you do the assigned practice problems, you should be fine. Doesn't offer much partial credit, which sucks, but he is an 8/10 professor. Really funny
Chemistry GOAT
An ok professor but a massive diva. whenever we did practice problems in class he was very patronizing and antagonistic toward us, even when we were trying our best to answer them. You are also only graded on exams so if you're not a good test-taker, good luck. I mainly relied on the textbook, it explains concepts much clearer than he does.
With Dr. Gross it's some stories about the scientists and history, not just all science. I liked his style of teaching was straightforward about exams- you have to go to class and do some of the book problems. He was helpful in office hours and so was his attached tutor Noah. Just get some help if something doesn't make sense.
I never thought I'd like chemistry and this class was my favorite class last semester. I love Dr Gross teaching style. You have to go to class to get the random extra credit.
Orgo with Dr. Gross can be tough, but his lectures are engaging. The exams are challenging, but doable if you use the textbook and practice problems. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for study prep!
I hate 8 am but I get to Gross every morning. I love that the classes are more.
