He is really interesting and very good looking!
Very, very nice and explains things very well. He cares about his students and wants them to be challenged. Unlike many of the gen. ed classes, this one makes you use your brain. AND not to mention, he's easy on the eyes.
Not the class to take early morning when your pledging.
Mr. Hales presents all the information for the class very clear and his essay, m/c exams are all straight from your thorough notes. He writes on the board what you need to get a B in the class and lectures the additional info needed to achieve an A.
Very rude, cocky, and arrogant. Did not show any effort in wanting his students to succeed.
Presents classroom material in a rather bland, boring manner. Don't get me wrong, impossible not to follow, but kind of...boring. Tests were essay questions that he looks for long answers in. Surprise exam on a compressed schedule snow day SUCKED!
Arrogant, cocky, and just a bad teacher. Sure, he's written alot of things that have been published, but teaching just pays the bills for him. He's very bad at it. Stay away.
Just a warning.......anyone thinking about taking this class........DO NOT......I have learned nothing in 4 months
I really liked his class and thought it was very interesting to go to. He comes up with great examples that make it very easy to understand. Once you get an idea of what he's looking for on the exams you shouldn't have a problem.

The classes are interesting to go to, his lectures keep you awake. Too bad he makes the students feel like their opinion is not "right" when they are opinions. His tests are essay, but not very hard. Just take VERY good notes. An A or B can be a
VERY HARD PROFESSOR. I WOULD AVOID HIM IF POSSIBLE. HE HAS NO COMPASSION FOR THOSE WHO DONT LIVE ON CAMPUS. HE GAVE A SURPRISE QUIZ ON A COMPRESSION SCHEDULE DURING A HUGE SNOWSTORM & WOULDNT EVEN LET THE COMMUTERS MAKE IT UP. COMPLETE ASS. MAKES YOU FEEL STUPID AND YOUR OPINION IS NEVER RIGHT! AVOI

Best professor I've had at Bloomsburg (in 3 yrs)- this class is worth taking no matter your major, teaches you to use your brain. He challenges you- but what GOOD professor doesn't? I found myself going to class just to hear him speak- he graduated from Brown(!), and he's quite easy on the eyes ;)
He made the class very intresting and gave great examples. if was frustrating because he always played devils advocate, but it made you think alot. Tests weren't that bad, i just took good notes and didn't have to study....managed a B+!
Arrogant. For a class that requires discussion and thought, seems to make you think that your opinion is wrong. Wears "Study Naked" t-shirt for the entire last week of class. Made a classmate stay after class once. Who ever heard of "detention" in college?
Very entertaining professor. Tests may be difficult, require studying, but overall is interesting and is worth taking if you like philosophy or critical thinking.
Very Intelligent. Has an analytic way of teaching and expects apropriate effort on your part, though he is always willing to help. If you do poorly in his classes, its because you don't try.
Be prepared to be persecuted for your religious beliefs, or for that matter, any beliefs. He basically disputes whatever point you make. Although, class is interesting and very thought provoking. Also interesting, he never tells you what he actually believes.
Intelligent guy who does dispute almost everything you say in class, but makes you think hard. This class seemed as if was easier grading than critical thinking, tests were mostly dependent on how well you can explain his essays, with few mutliple choice.
Very hard prof. and class. Class was also boring. Learned nothing other than if there is or isn't a God. Gave a suprise exam, most people did bad on it. Do not take this class, avoid!
Class is soooo easy. I have a 1.8 gpa and I managed a B+. You don't have to read at all. I would recommend taking him. He tells you the questions before the test!!
I absolutely loved his class. This was the only class I have ever actually looked forward to going to. Every time you say something he plays devils advocate, but he really makes you think. He gives great examples that really explain things well. Tests were easy if you just memorize what he gives you. I'd definitely recommend taking his class.
Very intelligent and clear prof. Explaniations are exceptional. Another experience worth having no matter your interests.
Great professor...the only 5 he didn't receive was for easiness, but that's probably the dumbest category in rating professors. If students aren't here to be challenged in classes, then they probably shouldn't be in college. The only people who don't lik
i am inlove with this man
Dr. Hales doesn't baby anyone. we coined the phrase "Hales Smash", because he can destroy a seemingly solid/sound arguement with a word. He's intellect is kind of intimadating, but I'd want that over a medicore prof any day.
SOOOO HOT. Dr. Hales is the hottest thing that I've ever seen. I hate to see him leave, but I love to watch him leave!!
A limerick: I know of a Dr. named Steven, who'll shoot down all you believe in. His brain's like a gun, aimed at'cha for fun, and he'll fire until you stop breathin'. Another(couldn't resist): His classes are full of pretenders, and faithful religion defenders. But Hales doesn't care, so long as they're there, to worship the man in suspenders.
Leave your beliefs at the door of his classroom! He will shoot them down. He is very good at what he does. Make sure you have an excellent argument before you speak. I'm still trying to figure out why such an accomplished philosopher is teaching at Bloomsburg?
One of the worst professors I've ever had in all my four years. No matter what you say, he will shoot you down and make you feel stupid. Trust me, my entire class hated him, and many of them failed due to his lack of teaching ability.
This is a professor, no, person that anyone would be honored to encounter. He is one of the most challenging and enthusiastic classroom leaders I have ever had the priveledge of arguing with. He teaches his students a valuable lesson, be prepared to defend your opinions and beliefs, for there is always a rebuttle creeping around a near by corner.
Very Good and enthusiastic professor. Grade is based on three tests (one surprise test that isn't worth that much and attendance). The tests are fairly easy as long as you pay attention and take good notes in class. I wouldn't take this class if you're very sensitive because when you try to argue with him he will probably shoot you down everytime.
Having this teacher made me switch my major. Without a doubt the smartest man i have ever met. I work my schedule around his classes.
Overall, I can say that if I had to take another class with Halls I would. He teaches with a passion, and can be very funny at times. Tests can be a little rough, but just study and you'll do fine.
The class itself is pretty intense so i don't recommend taking a 9:00 class. Overall the subject is interesting and Hales really know what he's talkig about. Studying is definately a necessity.
YOU REALLY WANT TO HAVE HIM AS A PROFESSOR. HE IS VERY SMART AND HELPFUL. BUT HE DOESN'T LIKE STUDENTS TO BE LATE. TAKE HIS CLASS IT'S WORTH IT.
my favorite class of all time. He will open your eyes to a new way of thinking. Take him for a gen ed and be ready to argue your arse off.
All around a good teacher.
Very intelligent and fun. This class made me pick up a philosophy minor. He is a great professor and willing to help you when you need it. If you're going to take a philosophy class, he's the professor to take.
Hales is an amazing teacher. He expects a lot from his students, which is somewhat refreshing. He strongly believes in what he teaches, and his interest is contagious. His tests and finals are challenging, but not impossible. go to class study your notes and you'll be fine. He's very easy on the eyes, and i love his tie and suspender combos!
Great prof. Very enthusiastic! Tests are mostly essay w/ some mult choice. He looks for main points in the essays, not just BS. Participate and ask if you don't understand. Don't be late or let cell phone go off! He doesn't act mad but you lose attendance which helps your grade. Overall very very interesting class. It will def. have you thinking.
Dr. Hales is dreamy -- I couldn't stop looking at his pecs.
nice guy, kind of a know it all. easy class, i never read but studied the notes alot, i did ok. interesting material, makes you think.
This course really opened up my eyes. I definately now believe there isn't a God, due to his AMAZING facts disproving reiligon, the Bible in paticutlar. Good course to take!
He was a very interesting teacher who liked to hear other peoples opinions on different topics. It was very eye-opening, however the tests were difficult. They were all essays, and he would take points off and not explain why. So make sure you are very thorough with the notes you take in class, and be sure to provide your own opinion on your essays
If you want to learn, then take Dr. Hales. The point of a philosophy class is to think outside the box and challenge yours and other peoples' opinions and ideas. Students who talk ill of him just don't enjoy philosophy. Dr. Hales is the best in the business (and he'll make sure you at least consider reconsidering evertthing you've ever believed =))
After my college career is finished, Metaphysics with Hales will probably have been my all-time favorite class. The difference between my philosophical mindset before and after taking the course is incredible. Hales is not only really brilliant, but also clever enough to explain difficult concepts in many different ways to aid your understanding.
Good teacher. Will challenge you to think about your answers. Pretty much will disprove most of your ideas in a reasonable way. tests were multiple choice and if you take notes and study you should pass them easily. He is one of the authors of the book he used so he knows what he is talking about.
Takes attendance. Had biweekly quizes and a final. Very funny prof and interesting topics. He knows that he is talking about!
HALES IS ONE OF THE BEST PROFS AT ALL TIME. BEFORE HIS CLASS, I DIDN'T THINK OF ANY OF THE TOPICS HE ADDRESSED IN CLASS. NOW, I ALWAYS THINK OF THEM AND VIEW THINGS MORE CRITICALLY. IF YOU ARE CLOSED MINDED DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS OR IF YOU WISH TO MAINTAIN YOU RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Honestly one of the best professors I have ever had. Yeah he is going to challenge you and make you rethink certain things but that’s the point of a philosophy course. I highly recommend taking him. No its not an easy A but if you do the work you can deff get one. I have gotten A's in almost all the classes I've taken with him
Professor Hales is a great professor! He def. loves what he does. He challenges his students and isn't afraid to say he disagrees with you. Weekly quizzes, a final, takes attendance every class. Gives notes from a PowerPoint and quiz questions come right from them.
The only thing that bothered me about this class was how he presented the material. He wrote the textbook which makes it harder. The textbook is alittle disorganized, exp. in the beginning. You get a quiz every friday, they are inconsistant though. I've gotten from 100% to a 44%. Reading the textbook and talking about it with others helps.
was not helpful during office hours, and quizzes were very inconsistant
Probably one of the most intelligent men I've ever met. Best professor you could have for philosophy.
Very good teacher. Quiz every Friday, but it's taken right from the notes; if you memorize the PPs you'll do fine. Must go to class and on time or he makes a point to call you out. Final is pretty easy, it is all of the quizzes together. Overall it was a pretty easy class and he's a good prof!
He is a horrible professor. Encourages students to give their inputs in class lectures and then always tells them that they are wrong and he is right. All he did the whole time I was in the course was confuse the entire class. Homework, quizzes, and exams are next to impossible. Would not recommend to anyone.
good enthusiuastic teacher besides the fact that the class was early he always kept it intresting
He certainly thinks his way is the only way. But this class helped me see things in a totally different way and I learned a lot. His hotness also made getting up early totally worth it!
Sometimes asks questions on quizzes that seem more opinion than fact. I usually felt pretty stupid giving my opinion/argument in class and having it shot down when it's not the one he's looking for. Pretty easy class though. Just reading, a quiz every week, and a final.
Class is super easy and as long as you go to class and pay attention to power points, the tests every week are super easy. Only thing is that he shoots down anything you say, and any belief you have. Of course, the material presented does focus on things such as God and Free Will, but he makes it clear where he stands and if u disagree u r wrong.
I've had Dr. Hales for a number of classes. He is a respected figure in philosophic academia and definitely knows his stuff while being very clear. He will make you write a few 1500 word papers and grade them somewhat harshly. Don't expect anything higher than a B+ unless you put forth a visibly large effort to get one. His finals can be tough.
Overall good professor. Most of the grading comes from weekly quizzes. Pay attention in class and you will pass.
I hate him. He is one of the worst professors I have ever personally had and he will shoot your answer down when you try to raise your answer in class. My quiz grades ranged from 61-100 and going to end up with a B- in his class. Not someone I would take again or recommend. Rude and ignorant professor who only cares about himself.
Anyone who says Hales is a bad teacher honestly does not realize that he is a teacher of Philosophy. And it is his job to get you to think, not just blindly express your own opinions without any objection. He is a good professor, show up and pay attention and you will pass. If your feelings tend to get hurt don't take this class.
If you want to start your day by having all your beliefs and common knowledge ripped apart, sign yourself up for PHIL 111. If your response does not coincide with his, you are wrong. I understand that he tries to get students to react, but he almost always shoots you down and examples he gives are extremely radical and sometimes inappropriate.
I have never laughed so hard in lecture, if you like his sense of humor you'll love going to class. The weekly quizzes are surprisingly difficult but there are no exams.
This was tough. (Class wasn't listed) Highly respect the guy; clearly knows his stuff. Main problem was the higher-level subject and his particular approach. Think he did his best to make it interesting regardless. Tough on grading, though laid out clearly. Attendance nearly required; his reviews were very helpful. Hard to grade him objectively. B-
Great if you want a challenge but it's extremely difficult if you have a heavy course load. Hales should have been a voice actor and not a test maker. Questions on quizzes and exams were nothing like what was discussed in class, and there were no other grades. Does not accept students questioning his grading.
Although he does not give a lot of homework and the quizzes are semi-easy if you read and pat attention. But this professor requires you to come to class, if not you don't get the points for the day. Unfortunately, even if your are just late by a minute he will still mark you absent. Also he moves incredibly fast through confusing topics.
I was initially super enthusiastic about this class. I had perfect attendance and felt that I understood everything we went over in class. But the class was graded on 6 quizzes, the midterm, and the final, and his "unlimited" extra credit. I ended up with a D. I'm a super hardworker and have never gotten less than a B. Dr. Hales is honestly awful.
He knows his stuff but for everyone else coming in and not really knowing what philosophy is about, it really hurts. It's all attendance, with a quiz at the end of every week. He goes off on rants and is always trying to be the loudest in the room.
He Knows His Philosphy. He only offers quizes on Friday!!! You need to know every little sentence in the book in order to pass the class.
Hales was by far my favorite professor. Made me consider changing to a philosophy major. Very understanding when you miss class and very professional. The suspenders and different colored pants was awesome!!
He is a great dude and really knows his stuff. You can ask him random stuff and he most likely has an answer to it or he has read a book about it. Just be prepared because this is philosophy and the class is hard.
Didn't like his teaching style. VERY opinionated and shoves his believes on you. All you do is reading his book and literally go over the EXACT material in the class the next day. Just a class to take if you need to. Didn't like how he introduced new information and had us take a quiz that day on the info we just learned. Taken while CO-VID19 btw.
Vaguest professor ever. I took this class to be an easy A and this guy was not good at all. Our grades were based off of 8 things and they were all quizzes/exams, which were very hard. He would often test us on things he never mentioned and that werent in the assigned readings. He also acted unprofessional when it came to discussions and emails.
Definitely will be taking his class again. I loved his teaching style and the way he got your brain thinking and seeing other points of view. If you are a sensitive person you might not like him as much, but I personally loved the bluntness and critique of ideas!
Lecture vs Tests are vastly different. He doesn't offer any of his notes outside of lecture so forget about studying, and trying to talk to him outside of class is cumbersome. If you need this class for the credit, take it with a different prof. He's made it clear he doesn't have time for anyone outside of philosophy. It's incredibly disheartening.
Dr. Hales is a good prof. He makes you think and asks a lot of questions. He wrote the textbook and you need a specific edition that isn't free online so it seems like a money grab. There is weekly Friday quizzes that is the bulk of your grade. The lecture is verbatim from the textbook (b/c he wrote it) so you don't need to read if you go to class
Dr. Hales only had one grade all semester and that was the Friday quizzes that he treated like a joke and used things such as Simpsons quotes as answers. He also made jokes in class that were then used as a test answer. Thought he was better than everyone else and spoke down to many people. I went to him for help with my grade and he didn't care.
Dr. Hales is a great thinker and a lot of the classes were based around discussion. Take notes and takes lots of them because he doesn't post his powerpoints which he should, other than that he's not bad. Course is split into only 4 grades for the semester, although if you pay attention and care at least a little about studying it's alright.
Even if youre just taking this for a general education class- dont take it. I struggled hard in this class even when I studied. The quizzes are directly from the slides but the content itself is hard to grasp. Theres a Friday in person quiz every week. Good luck emailing him if you wanna make it up, he wont answer you. You cant skip either.
He is okay. Few quizzes but difficult. Make sure you pay attention. I took this class by accident and I am kind of struggling. Don't skip, he grades attendance.
I found the class decently easy, but most of my friends in the class struggled, so it really depends. Hales gives weekly quizzes on the content which people generally struggle with. The textbook is helpful in aiding your understanding but not a necessity to pass. Most importantly, be prepared to have your beliefs and faith respectfully challenged.
I don't mind this class. There's no outside work, the only thing you'll be graded on are quizzes, the mid-term, and the final. So pay attention in class, study a bit , and you should be ok. He takes attendance, so try not to skip. Overall, easy class and sometimes really interesting.
He was not the best teacher but not the worst either. In his intro class he has a quiz every Friday, which were so annoying and not really easy. The only thing he uses to grade his class are the quizzes, attendance, and the final so it can be difficult to keep a good grade. If you can avoid this class I defined would, philosophy is so boring.
Overall Hales thinks he is a funny guy, made many off color jokes and discussed things in class that could be touchy for some students. Many students dropped this course throughout the semester. There are very few grades, no access to the lecture notes outside of the class and no homework. There is an unlimited extra credit policy.
Don't expect a high grade in this class. What should be an easy course is made difficult because of Hales's once a week quizzes which are usually 11-13 questions long. So basically if you get a couple wrong say goodbye to your chances of getting an A or B. These are your only grades besides the final which he announced was 150 questions long...
If you find this kind of material easy you'll be fine. The course is purely driven by tests and quizzes (Phil110). Otherwise I do not suggest taking him. If you ask him for help he won't help you and will tell you to go to a classmate for notes like they are supposed to be teaching his class. He also doesn't show an ounce of emotion and is boring.
Hales make the answers to his quizzes and tests questions ambiguous. He doesn't post his slides, which makes it difficult to revisit notes. Also, there's no assignments in the class, so bomb a few quizzes and your grade is never going back up, I genuinely think it's because the guy is just lazy and doesn't want to grade assignments.
The class is quiz based but if you show up and pay attention you'll pass. Also I'm in his critical thinking class now and he has unlimited extra credit in critical thinking so you really cant fail if you try. He's one of my favorite teachers because of his interest in what he does and that he really wants his students to succeed.
He's a very enthusiastic teacher. Honestly, he's a decent professor. I just wish that he respected his students a little bit more. During class he often interrupted students and put words in their mouth to try and advance to the next point. It made it hard for people to want to talk in class.
Class overall wasn't horrible, you are graded on 5 quizzes, midterm, final, and attendance so you gotta do well on most of your quizzes if you want a good grade. Hales isn't the worst professor, pulls a lot of examples from his PowerPoint onto quizzes. The better the class participation, the more you will get out of it.
Just wasn't a fan of him since he would sometimes act like the class should understand , would get annoyed threaten to walk out of classroom, quizzes every Friday and big final exam with over 120 questions.
The course is heavily quiz and test-driven, so staying on top of the material is key. The lectures can be dry, but taking notes and using resources like Unstuck AI for study prep can help. Attendance is mandatory, so don't skip class. Overall, an average but manageable class.
THIS WAS THE WORST GEN ED. Hales was really nice during office hours but he stood on business during class time. Made me feel like I was dumb for not understanding a hypothetical philosophical concept. Quiz every Friday and 160 question final. MEMORIZE EVERY WORD FROM CLASS AND THE BOOK or else you're FAILING!!!
I took this class expecting a challenge but not as hard as it was. You have weekly quizzes that each have 4 choices and they all sound the same. He has great energy when teaching but again that doesn't make up for the tests every single week being so difficult. If you're not a good test taker I would not recommend.
Quizzes every Friday, and the wording is very confusing. I would not retake this class. I rarely did well on quizzes even when I studied. Attendance is required and he will call you out if you walk in late. No phones either.
There is weekly test, which are very challenging. If you're looking for a semi easy class, I would not recommend!! The teacher is very enthusiastic and loves his job, but that doesn't make up for the test every week being so difficult. Also have a good amount of reading every single class which can get to be a lot with other classes.
