EXTREMELY UNCLEAR!!!!! Rarely discusses paper topics in class, in other words you have to find out what he wants through trial and error. Does not answer questions directly. Boring. Unclear grading method. Bring a stimulant to class:)
He is unclear yet there is little in class work so as long as you complete the papers its an easy grade
Mr Harless is a wonderful teacher. He tried his best to understand kids and he is always willing to go the extra mile to help you. He will always try his best to answer the kids questions and explain what is not clear to them. He doesn't mind repeating himself if you don't understand. He is very helpful inside and outside of class.
He was so boring that at the beginning of the semester there were around 30 students, by the end there were only 5 left. He's easy but his grading isn't clear at all. One of my grades was a B/C/D! Only 1 person got an A on papers. He tries to be funny but it doesn't work for him!
i got a B in the class, but he was extremely unclear and hard to follow.
he's funny as crap though
Not the best of teacher at wake tech! Could be a lot more clear in class! Never really went over papers at all. Very boring and slow during class time, he would spend like a week talking about the same thing, and i really dont think anyone really knew what that was? He also grades papers weird as well.
Omigod everyone have a dictionary handy to translate what the heck he's saying. He uses big big words, that nobody understands and he takes up class time talking. But you really can't hear him because while he's doing all the talking all you hear is blah blah blah. Heartless Harless
Man i would advise you not to take his class. He is very unclear n babbles on about everything that isn't important nor interesting. He writes horribly and just isnt a good help with anything.
Mr. Harless is great. I had him several semesters ago and enjoyed his class a lot. I think he's hilarious and yeah okay he babbles on and on, but it's funny. I see him around campus and talk to him a lot b/c he is so funny. Also, he is very helpful in helping his former students make good decisions for future clases and college plans.
Very nice but boring and grades papers tough
Mr. Harless is a wonderful teacher. I had him during a 5-week summer session and he did everything to help me make sure my papers were exactly what he wanted. You just have to ask and he will tell you everything you need to do to get an A. I highly recommend taking English with him
This guy is smart and wants you to be as well. If you have coasted through school without learning to write a paper you are going to have problems. He will repeat himself many times but that is because people ask stupid questions because they have no clue how to write. Use the writing center and write a couple drafts, then you will get an A!
He's a nice man, will do anything he can to help you correct papers and resubmit for improved grades. Problems: He's slack w/attendance which means someone who shows up once in a while can make the same grade I did; He's very unclear about what he wants or means when he explains things and I had to ask a million questions clarifying.
he is hard to understand and is not very explainatory.
If you have Blue eyes and are left handed, you will pass his class (You'll know what I mean when you take his class). On a more serious note, her babbles, he's tough on grading papers, but he'll go extra miles to help you. The biggest thing is that you have to reach out in order to receive help, so your actual committment will decide pass/fail.
loved him he truly loves lefty's and if your adhd or have some learning disability hes truly helpful.. LOVE THAT MAN
Harless is a nice man who wants his students to pass. He's pretty lenient on attendance, but his discussions make it seem as though you should attend. He tends to stutter now and again, and he rambles, but he'll go the extra mile to make sure you pass his class.
Nice guy, helped me out a bunch. grades maderatly hard, but he will work with you. show him you're interested.
This Guy is the Man!!
Mr. Harless is one of the best professors I have had. He helps out a lot. The material is tough and challenging from time to time, but he makes it easy to digest. This class was definitely a requirement for me, but I enjoyed it!!
Oh my God! When this class began, my first thought was can anybody tell me why did I choose this class? But I was totally wrong, I can absolutely say this professor is worth every penny. The topics were very hard but he was available anytime I needed him to answer my questions. If you are willing to work hard! You can get an A in this class!!!!!!!!
If you have questions, which you will, ASK! If you're unclear, rather than asking him to explain again, see if you can figure it out, and ask him if your understanding is correct. Sometimes this is a better way to get a good answer. Don't let him scare you! He's quite nice, and rather funny!
Starts off a little slow but is always able and willing to help out. The material can be tough sometimes but nothing he won't help you with. Laid back with attendance. A Great Professor!
This is the most unclear or confusing professor I have ever had. The writing assignments are so unclear and always leave class confused. Do not take his classes.
I enjoyed Mr. Harless. He is funny and not intimidating. I thought he was very much in the philosophical/pyschological arena, which is not me, but he accomodated my beliefs, which I appreciated. He is a fair grader - I did get an "A" out of him! My suggestion is to ask him tons of questions - this will clear up anything he doesn't spell out.
I started off this class a little afraid of him because he does seem intimidating. Also, he was VERY slow at the beginning, and his lectures were boring. As the semester progressed, I realized he's very kind, and he picked up the pace. He's understanding and gives many chances. He once extended a deadline for an entire week. He's so sweet.
Sometimes unclear and is also very late with grading. But he is a wonderful, kind teacher who gives many chances and really does care. The delay in grading got very annoying sometimes because he did not have our second papers due until the day of the final and was also late in putting up our final grades in the course. Other than that, good teacher.
Professor Harless is a DOLL. you have to pay attention to him, and come to class but he is extremely helpful with anything. The people that say he is a terrible teacher have never talked to him. As long as you ask questions when you are unclear, he will help you. Very helpful professor and very leniant on deadlines. Would definitely take again
Horrible professor...avoid him at all costs...he doesn't say the same things to each class and nobody can understand him...so many people have dropped this class this semester...not very many grades so you have to do well in all work...very very very late grader....takes him forever to grade...do not take him
Mr. Harless is very nice. The first day of class he was a little intimidating but after you get to know him he is not at all. The class was easy, although there are not many grades. If you do poorly on one of the two papers he assigns, then you are out of luck. This class was also extremely boring. He talks about the same subjects all the time.
He is veryyyyy nice and helpful! He acts like a grandpa to everyone and will help you in anyway possible :)
Mr. Harless is wonderful! I feel like everyone else doesn't like him because he does not baby you. Research papers are done completely on your own. However, if you have any questions (as I did several times) he will answer them in his office hours. He lectures a lot because he wants you to think critically! If people took the time to actually listen to him, they would see that he is talking about a relavent topic (maybe that's why they can't do their research papers or work). I loved his class!
Worst class ever-he is completely incomprehensible, both in his lectures & his instructions. Talks for 78 minutes of a 75 minute class-BORING! Not many grades so you have to do well on all assignments, takes forever grading, but is a pretty lenient grader. That said, I still wouldn't recommend taking him unless you like being confused all semester
If you're in this level of English you should expect a challenge from any teacher. That being said, I love Harless. This man knows more about English than probably most of the staff. Lectures are long, but informative. TAKE NOTES. The things he discusses will be on the Exams. Very, very lenient grading on the papers as long as the idea is good.
Mr. Harless has forgotten more than most people will ever know. He's a wonderful professor - yes, he lectures and yes, you're going to have to take notes. Welcome to college.
Mr. Harless is hilarious in class. Be prepared to take note of his ramblings in class. They are actually very helpful and informative. Fairly lenient grader, if you actually try you will be successful.
Harless is one if not the best English professors you will ever have, the man knows his art.. Very friendly character, if you pay attention and do the work you will pass.
Awesome class. I have learned more about literature in this class than all of my years of education combined. If you are not prepared to struggle, to come to grips with new ways of conceptualizing art, then this class may not be for you. But if you really want to learn something, then take this class.
He is a really good professor. He pushes the students to the max and I am planning to take literate with him:)
Mr. Harless is the best. he very helpful and clear on what he wants from you. take his classs you will not regret it. best english teacher.
I am really surprised when I see the bad comments about Mr. Harless. I feel bad because he is the best teacher ever. English is my second language and I was nervous when I took his Eng-112 class but he was very nice and helpful. He cared about our grades more than we did. He kept saying that we need an A for our GPA, not a C or B.
Mr.Harless is a very kind and helpful teacher. He is VERY intimidating, almost half the class dropped but if you stick it out and do the work you'll pass with at least a B. He cares about what you make and works with you, he's very lenient on deadlines. He lectures the whole time, be prepared!
I loved Mr. Harless! One of the best instructors I have ever had. So many people complained about his lectures but honestly you are in college and you should put a little effort in yourself. I have seriously learned so much!
Terrible teacher! Very confusing &intimidating. He didn't give us a syllabus, but We got a "schedule" half way through the course. He obviously knows when assignments are, but he doesn't tell us about them until less than a week before they are due. Papers are your only grades. All essays you have to read are just a confusing as he is!
He is really sweet and always stretches paper deadlines if needed. He can be hard to understand (not how he talks but his wording it just really confusing). His papers are hard but if you try you can atleast get a B or C in the class. He lectures the whole class but doesn't matter if you listen or not honestly. He is helpful if you go to office hrs
He is really sweet and I am sure that he means well but he spends most of his time rambling in a 50 minute class and all of a sudden you realize you learned nothing :( He answers your questions in philosophical terms which is confusing! We are 3 weeks away from our final, and all I have done is write papers, He hasn't posted any grades yet!
He is a very kind man but he is useless in lecture. He speaks for 5 minutes past class about random ramblings. His paper prompts are cryptic as to the goal but write something vaguely close and you'll be fine. We got to the withdraw deadline before receiving any graded assignments. He then proceeded to cram it all into the last half of the semester
He is confusing, and will not help. Do not take him.
I love Mr. Harless, but if you're looking for someone who is easy to understand, he's not for you. He is intimidating at first, but he's actually really funny and cares about his students. Mr. Harless is an interesting person, and if you like being made to think you will learn a lot. Best teacher I've had, but I would not recommend for everyone.
Mr. Harless Is the funniest English teacher ever. Most people complain about his lectures being ramblings and confusing but their funny. However he does use an enhanced vocabulary, but since we are in college we are expected to be able to follow along, and also if you don't know what a word means, don't be afraid to ask.
Mr. Harless expects lots of critical thinking from his students as he should in a college-level English class. In our 112 class we had to write a lot of papers, with pretty cryptic prompts for each paper. However, he's a pretty easy grader. If you put in some effort and critical thinking, you should have no problem getting an A or B.
Professor Harless is the best English teacher I have ever had. He is lenient, and understands that you have other classes and responsibilities. Whenever I had problems understanding the assignment, I would go to his office and he was always very helpful. He's the best and I have a lot of respect for him.
I took his ENG 112 class during the summer. It was 5 weeks of straight up English meeting 4 times a day, for 2 hours day. There was an essay due each week and it was pretty tough to get through, but Harless was very understanding of the whole thing. I turned in papers late and didn't get penalized at all. He grades very easily too. Take him!
Prof. Harless is a great professor who forces you to think more about seeing your education critically. Go to his office hours. He is always willing to help, and in a way it is essential to getting an A at his class. I used to fret literature, but he really showed me how a novel or poem can be art rather than something to be just read.
As a visual learner, I struggle to understand what the heck he trying to say during his lecture. Lenient with the deadlines. His lectures are usually 20-30 minutes, 1/3 of the class time. Respect Mr. Harless, he can be tough sometime.
Difficult but helpful
Mr. Harless isn't a bad teacher and clearly wants you to succeed . His lectures can seem a bit dry at times as he tends to go on about the same thing. At first I was disappointed, but classes soon got a bit better. His writing prompts are really vague so ASK QUESTIONS! Wouldn't recommend him for everyone. He gets you to think & is ready to help.
The man is a Philosophy teacher masquerading as an English teacher. His lectures are confusing and random, you never know what he is going to talk about nor what he is going to talk about. If you take his class you will learn next to nothing, his essay prompts are a garbled mess and its hard to find the actual prompt. Avoid this instructor.
He seemed like an okay guy, but never posted grades, rarely took attendence, and his lectures were weird back stories he tried to relate to the subject. would not recommend at all. Never gave clear instructions.
I understand why people say he is confusing, but that is only because he isn't a conventional teacher. He gives great feedback, as my ability to write well has improved greatly. I also had something bad happen and he was more supportive than my family.
Expect LONG lectures where he just talks on and on and on about complex topics he never explains in very confusing matter. This class has very blurry grading criteria, on papers he doesn't tell you what he wants without making it confusing as hell. On the day of the final, not a single person had even one grade in blackboard. No feedback at all.
Not really sure what class he thought he was teaching. Lectures are more about English philosophy and his opinions on education. His essay prompts were two pages long and never actually stated what the topic was (most students in my class could not tell the difference between the first and second essay prompt). This class sets you up for failure.
He lectures about 97% of the time. He doesnt really engage the students with questions or anything. Its just him talking continuously for an hour in a monotonous voice. Ask him a question and you will end up more confused. The class was incredibly frustrating because you couldnt figure out what exactly what he wanted you to do.
This is one of the hardest teachers that I have ever had in my life. Five papers in 8 weeks is crazy! Each paper was a minimum of 5 pages. Don't even bother asking him to explain, because he wont. At the end of the semester he only graded 2 papers. Now, he is a nice person but his work is too much. don't plan on taking more than 3 classes with him.
Honestly the worst professor I've ever had. Lectures are drawn out and confusing, grading criteria is non existent, he assigns an ungodly amount of papers without telling you what he wants or how you're being graded. 2 weeks after the final exam, he had only graded two of my papers, all were turned in on time. I learned nothing, do NOT enroll.
I tell everyone I know at WTCC to NOT take this man's class. He is nice but I would rather have a mean teacher that teaches me something than a nice one that doesn't. I didn't learn one thing in this class. One time he lectured us about Times New Roman font and why it's better and Calibri. If you love English (and yourself) pick another professor.
WORST instructor at WTCC by far. I don't understand how this man is allowed to teach, literally learned NOTHING in this class.
Mr. Harless is probably one of the best teachers I know. He will make you pass if you really want it. Hell, he wants to make you pass. Mr. Harless is a fantastic teacher and he may be old and call your computer a toaster and speak in some coded language but if you just give him a chance I guarantee you'll pass.
Okay. So I personally have nothing against the man, but he's... a unique piece of work. The first week of class he spent talking to us about how phones are similar to toasters, and why paperclips were fascist. Instead of giving us answers, he told us that he can't tell us what the paper is graded on, how he grades it, or why he does what he does.
I absolutely loved Mr. Harless! He explained literature in such a way that students could relate to more current events; making the material seem more relevant and easier to handle. Mr. Harless may come off as harsh, but once you take the time to speak with him and appreciate the material, he is truly a delight. Highly recommend taking his classes!
Hes very understanding, if you need an extension to turn in your essay he will give it to you.
Overall an amazing person. If anything, I learned more about life from him than English. A super great guy, just not the best professor. I had a harder time understanding what he wanted from us or how papers would be graded and the lectures were extremely unclear and unhelpful. I liked him a lot, just not sure I would take him again.
Harless is a smart man who is passionate at what he does but is overall a poor professor. He is an extremely tough grader, you dont know what he wants out of you, and when he grades his handwriting is so sloppy that you cant understand whats wrong with your paper. you will also only be graded based off the 3-4 papers you write. Do not recommend.
I enjoyed Harless. Classmates wanted him to teach basics and review. We read challenging material. He taught deeply about the message, art, and voice of writing, not basic mechanics. If you are looking for ENG 111 part 2, you won't get it. I had to think and study to learn. If you don't want to be challenged and grow, maybe college isn't for you.
Harless made me feel that my writing was inadequate. He is hypercritical, yet doesn't give clear instructions on how you can improve. In addition, reading his handwriting is nearly impossible. Prompts were vague and even with notes from his lectures, I pulled mediocre grades. Unless you're a masochist, avoid this professor.
Not exactly the best teacher to for this class if you ask me. The prompts he gave were too vague and we were basically left in the dark to try and make out what we were supposed to do. If you're up to a challenge to be solving puzzles then go ahead and take him, if not avoid his class and get a teacher who gives clear instructions.
Professor Harless is a good person, but everyone in my class had a very hard time understanding what he wanted from our papers. The plus is he does give you extra time on papers if you ask. I found meeting with him after class is the best way to understand him.
-long, drawn out, confusing lectures every class -very rarely puts grades in blackboard -very rarely hands papers back -picks on certain students in front of the class to be funny but is actually insulting -not helpful even when very specific about what type of help you need -essay prompts are long but make no sense -awful handwriting
this class was by far one of the worst classes I've ever taken. unclear writing prompts and lectures, huge waste of time. if you have a question, ask him after class unless you're trying to really argue about nothing. doesn't take attendance but gets bitter if you don't show. nice and overly understanding guy, but horrible teacher.
He's a nice enough guy, so it's a little painful for me to give him a 2. Still, do not take this class. I understood his essay prompts like I understand 16th century poetry. He is very accessible outside of class, but even visiting his office hours didn't help me all that much. If there aren't any other sections open, take it, but tread carefully.
Just terrible please do not take this professor his lectures were confusing and he took forever to grade papers. When he graded papers gave little to no feedback on what we could work on. Essay prompts were very confusing I even took the prompt to the ILC and they could not help me because they were confused themselves.
There are lots of words I could use to describe Mr. Harless, in a negative light. We didn't get a syllabus till a month after class started. He didn't tell us his office hours after two months the class started. He doesn't answer his emails. He gets an attitude when you ask for help. Lastly, those prompts are impossible to understand.
Do not take his low rating as an indicator of a challenge but a measure of competence. Harless is unclear of what he wants, does not schedule out assignments, and leaves two words or nothing as feedback. For my class, this meant us writing many essays with only our presumptions of his prompts and few ways to improve. Take another Professor!
I would not advise any student to ever take his class. He is unhelpful for every question you could possibly ask and is selective for who he does and doesn't want to provide feedback for. It becomes obvious upon a few weeks of being in his class that he does not care for the success of his students. Do not take this class if you want to succeed.
I have never encountered a professor such as Mr. Harless in my life. I have found that he does not enjoy answering questions when one needs extra clarification and does not answer emails. Every assignment tends to be a shot in the dark as no one (including ILC tutors) understand the prompts. I am truly sorry for anyone who takes this class.
Probably one of the most pointless classes I have ever taken. He was unclear on what he expected from us and on any due dates for papers. He graded three things and blamed us for not being on track, though everyday we showed up waiting for him to give us work. He spent most of class telling us we did not know what we were doing and we would fail.
If you are a hard worker, this class will not only be extremely useful but it will be an easy A. This may seem counterintuitive, but it's not. He only gives a few papers as all your grades for the year, so just put real effort into the papers in the first place and listen to his feedback. I got a 99% overall and thoroughly enjoyed this class.
was never clear on what he wanted. not sure if he's just inexperienced with teaching online courses or if this is normal for him. never gave feedback for why he gave obnoxiously low grades (i'll accept a D if the professor explains to me why a well-written essay apparently warranted a D). do yourself a favor and take anybody else for english-112.
Lack of standard communication and difficult to please, seems set on failing students and apathetic. I knew something was wrong with his harsh grading, these reviews definitely shine a certain light.
I had to withdraw midway through the semester. This guy talks for hours about very little and forgets what he's talking about mid-lecture. He isn't clear on what he expects of student's papers at all and got real snappy when asked for a bit more information. This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a professor in my life.
He was not helpful, no extra credit, and took forever to grade!! I reached out to him several times by phone and email hardly got a response and when I did he would be a jerk not really answering the questions asked..
Professor Harless graded a total of 1 of 4 papers. In fact, he stopped grading assignments in September. Yes, this includes not grading the final exam. Unfortunately, emailing him is fruitless, as his grammar and syntax is literally incomprehensible. Ironic, isnt it? Random luck and chance are all you need to pass, tantamount to a coin flip.
This was the worst class ive ever taken at wake tech. Me and my boyfriend worked hard all semester and completed all the assignments for him to only grade 12/36 of submitted assignments. My final grade was a C because he never graded anything after the first 2 weeks. Do not take a class with him, he didnt even care about his students at all.
Absolutely no communication. He also didnt grade a single assignment. Multiple people tried to reach out to him and he never responded. I had to withdraw from the course because he never graded anything. 100% would NOT recommend taking him.
Terrible teacher that doesn't grade anything. Reached out to him about the numerous assignments that hadn't been graded and his response was that they were just "attendance grades". This included all the major essay assingments and I don't think I ever even got a grade for my final. Only grades that count are the ones that are automatically graded
His class is easy. The one problem he has is not making due dates clear enough, he puts the weekday it's due but never the date, or doesn't even put the weekday. I would've had an A in his class but I won't because I got a 0 for an assignment that was "late" when really he never put a due date so I turned it in mid week hoping it'd be fine.
Extremely harsh grader and gives very poor feedback. I am unsure if he is lazy and uses a speech to text command when writing feedback or if his English is this poor. Don't expect to receive any of your grades in a timely manner, it takes him forever to grade papers. He is rude when responding to questions. I would not recommend taking his class
Professor Harless is an OK teacher. His class is simple to pass as long as you follow the grading requirements. I just wish he was more caring and organized. His assignments are not very specific on the due date. He also takes a long time to grade assignments and essays but he is a good teacher, he just has to put more effort into his students.
So Ill start to say I got an Abut that does not mean by any means Harless is a good teacher, he is the opposite. He is by far the worst Professor Ive ever had. He doesnt grade things, he wants you to interpret the rubrics and I mean no disrespect when I say this, but Im convinced he has dementia because he just forgets what hes doing. 0/10
