He'll give you a lot of work... but it isn't busy work and you learn a lot. He is powerful and get's his points across very well. He is new, but one of my favorite religion Professors.
Worst religion class ever. Insanely detailed daily quizzes and tests. I ended up getting an A, but never had to sit and read my D&C to do it. What made me mad was that we had great discussions in class, but the grading was totally unrelated.
Very hard, dropped the class so I didn't end up failing!
Prof. Harper isn't satisfied with memorization of facts - he wants you to read scripture. The tests are pretty tough; make sure you know the contents and context of each section or you'll be lost.
Tests are very detailed and don't expect any test review in terms of a study guide. Sadly, I cannot say that I have felt the spirit once. Not a feel good class but you do learn a lot.
Good lectures, HARD tests. Don't be fooled by his quizes, the tests will blind-side you.
The most amazing religion class I've taken so far. Very good at teaching the big picture of the doctrine and covenants. I usually feel the spirit backing up what he says in class and I want to repent half the time.
Brother Harper's class was not a breeze, but the content of the class was amazing. Very detailed, extremly informative, and strong testimony builiding experience. Well worth the work. Tests are difficult, its not a regurgatation of facts, you better know the concepts!!!
He knows his stuff, but his tests were killer. He gave us a take home test for a final that took me 8 hour to complete. I got an A- in the class, though. Won't take another class from him. I've definatley had better religion teachers
I loved this class. Professor Harper has no qualms about calling students to repentance through lecture, but in a way that made me leave the class wanting to be a better person. I don't know how much I retained about D&C, but it was one of the most spiritually strengthening classes I've ever had.
His class was challanging because we had to write a thought paper each day, but this ended up being one of my greatest experiences in a religion class. Dr. Harper is excited about the material and getting everyone to personalize it for themselves. The class was very spiritual and I learned a TON!!!
This class was 100% writing assignments, including the final. His lectures are great. I never had any trouble paying attention. He really does teach by the Spirit.
Touchy feely religion class- "warm fuzzies" if you will. Bore testimony more than taught information, and when he did teach it was boring. His tests were hard b/c they were detailed, so you had to read REALLY carefully to make up for his definciency in teaching the material. Look around- you can find better.
Makes you write a lot and analyze scripture, not explain or testify (what he constantly did). If you do not analyze the scripture negating feelings, testimony or lessons learned from the scripture you will not get a good grade. Interesting class though if you do not care about your GPA and like to memorize scriptures.
The class was very interesting, and he knows his history. The lectures were always pretty intense, but unfortunately so were the tests. You really have to know your stuff for for this class, and he gives a 3 question quiz at the beginning of every class if there was assigned reading. The quiz questions are pretty hard if you didnt read.
Brother Harper is an extremely intelligent professor who has a deep conviction for what he is trying to teach. His class is hard, but definately doable.
Br. Harper is a great teacher and a very insightful reader of the scriptures. His classes are not easy, but he will not only teach you about the scriptures, but how to read them like he does. I highly recommend this learning experience!
His tests were nothing but memorization. He decided the most important parts of the D&C and gave you 10 verses to memorize and that was it. I didn't learn any of the rest of that book because he only teaches what he thinks is most important, which was a very very small part. He was very hard and prides himself in his intellectualism and academia
Harper Rocks! The quizes aren't bad, you get to use your book! The tests require a lot of memorization, but the lectures will tell you everything you need, plus they are very good. You will learn a lot. This class and Bro. Harper really helped bring to life the scriptures and the people in them. I recommend anything he teaches!!!
This is the only religion class that I have been truly motivated to learn and expand my knowledge and convictions. It is not a fill-out-a-reading-log-and-get-an-A class, but his teaching skills are second to non, IMHO. My favorite religion teacher at the Y. (Ive had Bott, Parker, Fluhman)
The assignments he required took a lot of effort to complete. You couldn't analyze the scriptures--you had to write exactly what was being said in the revelation. What he taught in class was very interesting, though. I enjoyed the class time. Also, no quizzes or finals!
The homework was just above a waste of time. He graded strictly on it and miss over 30 point (out of about 450) and say goodbye to an A. Pretty good lectures but didn't appreciate when he thought it was cool to point out error with the D&C headings.
He makes for good conversation, but in my section assigned only lots and lots of busy work, most of which he never looked at. Discussions in class were intriguing, but simply had nothing to do with the grade received. I learned quickly that buzz-words and paraphrasing was what he wanted, and NOT critical thinking or commentary on the scripture.
Bro. Harper is AWESOME!!!!! He is one of the most sincere people I have ever met and he is an example to me! I loved both of the classes I took from him and would take another one in a heartbeat. He is very clear, spritual, and will go out of his way to help you! His classes have a good about of work, but you do want to learn, right? He is amazing!!
Br. Harper is one of my favorite religion professors I've had. There were no quizzes, but we spent the semester working on document transcription projects, which he was very helpful with. His tests are really hard, so studying and doing the daily reading is a must. Challenges you to find the truth for yourself instead of blindly trusting people.
Tests are tricky. If u think you have them figured out, you don't. He'll tell you what u need to know for them but still plan on doing the reading and going over provided powerpoints. Grades are based off 2 tests. GREAT teacher. Hes brilliant when it comes to Joseph Smith and the restored gospel, will give you his honest opinion on any question :)
Makes you work for it, but AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!
Knew his stuff, but I did not much care for his attitude. Braggged about how impossible his tests were (exaggerating, though they are hard) and would say things like 'every student needs to get a D once for the experience.' Opinionated about bad habits students tend to have or bad habits/faulty beliefs LDS members tend to have (agreed SOMETIMES).
His class was AMAZING! He really knows what he is talking about and is extremely knowledgable! I really learned a lot! His tests are not easy but if you study you will do well! Great guy and Professor
I loved his class. He is extremely passionate about the subject. I didn't think his tests were very brutal and easily got an A in the class. Carefully read through the syllabus on how to do the document transcription. People lost a lot of points on that assignment. I would definitely take another class from him.
I loved the class and learned a lot. He loves church history and it shows. Very interesting and a wonderful teacher. Attendance affects your grade drastically so you can only miss a twice or so and still get a good grade.
This class was interesting but the tests were very hard. You practically had to memorize the whole D&C word for word.
Dude this Man knows alot about the BOM, for that i have mad respects for him. Knows this religion inside out, and his way of teaching is absolutely doctrine style..
know details
Wow..Prof. Harper. You will love him, but you will also hate him. I learned SO MUCH in his class and have a way stronger testimony than before. You can feel the spirit very well in his classes and will feel like you want to convert the whole world. Tests are extremely hard, though. If you care about your grade, dont take it from him.
Complete stud of a teacher. If you read and attend class, the tests aren't bad at all.
He knows his stuff and you had better too if you want to pass. Lots of memorizing.
Brother Harper is exactly what a BYU Religios Professor should be. He taught the Book of Mormon better than any other teacher I have yet to have. His classes arn't so much "fuzzy" but you walk out of there knowing the Book of Mormon in a light you have never seen it before. I highly recommend taking his class.
Oh my gosh he was sooo stinking hard!!! if you want to pass his class you have to memorize the D&C. there are no study guides and his test are questioning every little detail. Now he was an awesome teacher. his classes are intense and i did learn a ton. but if you want to maintain a good grade and take his class its near impossible.
I had Brother Harper for an LDS History class. I really liked the class, even though most of it was just lectures with power point presentations--with many professors this would be boring, but he is enthusiastic about the subject so its not so bad. The test was pretty hard, especially without any kind of study guide, but could have been worse.
He really wants you to understand the material. He will help you to understand the importance of doctrine in your own life. Tests in this class are extremely difficult. I would not advise taking any classes from him if you care much about your GPA. I got an A- with tons of effort. Could hardly believe a 2 hour class could be this demanding.
Extremely intelligent, kind man. INSANE professor. You have to memorize the D&C to pass. His test are some of the hardest religion test I have ever taken. He IS however very intelligent and passionate about what he teaches. You can learn a lot from him.
Possibly the most difficult religion professor on campus. This class has no real focus or direction and there is so much material that by the end of the semester you feel like you are going to explode with information. Too bad the minute you walk out of the final you forget everything because there wasn't anything in class to help you retain it.
One of the best teachers I've had at BYU in terms of lecture talent, sincerity, clarification of scriptural meaning and expectations. It was extremely rigorous. You must know by heart the Origin, Content, Outcome of each D&C section. If you are okay with a B+ or thereabouts but really want to learn the D&C well with no 'pet doctrines' take him.
He is really hard a requires to read and study much, but he instills in his students a love for the material that is being covered
I was definitely torn over this class. Such awesome lectures and such a strong spirit every day! I studied constantly, took thorough notes but still could only pull out with a B. The grade was disappointing but the class was amazing. It felt impossible to get an A, but I liked the class so much I can't decide if it was worth it or not!
I attended class everyday and managed a C. His tests are really hard and require you to integrate learning styles that were not taught in class. He's very interested in his students, I learned a lot from him. However, my grade was not a good reflection of that.
Very difficult tests but if you go in with a sincere desire to become a D&C master, you'll do well! Make a friend or two; it's invaluable!!! Study regularly and rigorously. FANTASTIC teacher and lecturer, EXTREMELY knowledgeable, helpful, and powerful in speech. He'll move you to greater spiritual heights. :D
Hard. It's not true that if you do the amount of reading he suggests that you will pass. If you have any type of learning disability. . . TAKE ANOTHER PROFFESSOR! Class is enjoyable, tests are impossible.
BYU has so many professors that teach D&C - choose one that will teach you something that will actually affect you. I always came out of Bro. Harper's class smiling like a fool because I was so excited about these beautiful revelations given to us. His energy is contagious. :D I'm not saying his class was easy, but man was it sure worth it.
Not an easy class, but so worth it if you want to know how to get the most out of the Doctrine and Covenants.
A fantastic teacher. Such an enjoyable class. Hard, but not not impossible. If you ACTUALLY do the amount of studying he suggests, you will do well. Totally worth it.
I took him for first half of Book of Mormon and both D&C courses. Amazing teacher, knowledgeable and more than willing to help students. His classes are not easy, so you cannot slack off. If you do the readings and go to class you will almost ace the test every time. One time a test took me only 12 minutes and I aced it.
THE best religion teacher I have ever had at BYU. His class was so incredibly interesting it inspired me to serve a mission. The tests are easy if you go to every class, listen, and read the scriptures. I highly recommend him for any religion course.
He teaches religion in the best way possible-Teaching us the principles and expecting us to use those principles to apply them. Best religion class I have ever taken.
Brother Harper is the real deal, one of the smartest people in the church. He tells it like it is in a clear, interesting, direct way. Most engaging lectures I have taken at BYU. His tests are open scripture and expound teachings from the course. You will never read the D&C the same way again.
Fantastic class. Great professor. He knows the history, doctrine and context, unlike many professors. And he teaches you to find all that stuff out for yourself. Tests are difficult but I learn from them, they are not just a regurgitation of the professor's opinion. Also he prepares you well for them in class and via the homework. Loved it!
I have taken 3 classes from Br. Harper. The work load is not as demanding as some would have you believe. Just take notes in class and do the reading. Dr. Harper does not speculate and throw out wild doctrine, unlike some. He teaches only from the scriptures and historical records and encourages you to challenge and ask questions. Very spiritual!
Extremely great professor. He is the best religion professor I have had. Teaches true doctrine. Learned more in his class than any other religion class. If you go to class and do the readings you will do well.
This was my favorite class this semester and it was because Brother Harper really knows church history and helps you understand D&C in context. It is the most challenging religion class I have taken, but it's worth it because I've learned so much. Online quizzes each week. This guy is legit. He has worked on Joseph Smith Papers and other things!
Professor Harper is incredible. I don't think I've ever learned so much from a class before. This is not an easy class, but not in a bad way. It is designed to develop you and improve your skills. I feel like I really earned everything that I worked for in his class. Challenging? Yes, but I don't regret it at all.
I've had several religion teachers, and while each of them have good qualities, Brother Harper took the time to listen and answer questions, he's willing to meet with you and help you through the homework, and his classes are intelligent and interesting. His class pushed me to learn more, but it never felt overwhelming. I'd take from him again
Dr Harper is brilliant and one of the most knowledgeable religion professors at BYU. I like his style of focusing on the history of the church from a historical instead of purely religious perspective. Just be prepared to make ctrl+f your best friend because 65% of the grade is based on quizzes where you need to find exact lines from articles
This was the best religion class I have ever taken!! He takes attendance, but I didn't even mind because lectures were so amazing!! There were weekly quizzes on the readings but they were open note and book and there was no midterms. The final was also open not and book!! He really cares about you as a student and his class is set up for success!!
Brother Harper is literally the best. His quizzes and Final are all open notes and I have learned SO much from him!! Never before have I been so invested and enthralled in the history of the Church. He teaches doctrine, not anything else, and encourages us to seek answers and truth ourselves. He's an extremely intelligent man for sure, love him!!
Honestly, I am not a fan of religion classes. I have had bad experience after bad experience, but Dr. Harper was so different. He actually cared about us learning instead of just showing off his knowledge, and I enjoyed every day of class. He spoke in a real way, and was always willing to answer questions. You need to have him as your professor!!!
Brother Harper is a great religion professor. Genuinely cares about his students and presents the material in a way that is easy to relate to and understand. Class is an easy A if you show up to class every time and complete the assignments online.
Fantastic lectures. All tests and quizzes are open-book online with multiple attempts allowed. He is passionate and knowledgeable on the subject he teaches and always delivers thought-provoking lectures.
Read, read, read, and you will pass. Read all the good reviews so that's why I took his class. Basically he just assigns a bunch of readings, reads off his powerpoints, and you take a weekly quiz. The lectures are long and boring but he does take attendance so no choice there. It's not a hard class at all, and he's a chill guy but just not for me.
Brother Harper is seriously my favorite religion professor ever. His lectures are incredible, the assignments are designed to help you learn, and if there is a problem with one of the assignments, he's so understanding and will help you succeed. He is always available to help with questions, and honestly, I wish I could take all his classes!
Four areas in grading. Attendance, weekly quizzes, 4 Saint's quizzes, and a final. Here's the catch, if you make 100's in all areas but show up to class half the time, your grade is a 50. Nope, it does not average out. His quiz questions are super nitpicky and annoying. All he does is read off ppts in class. There are better professors. Don't take.
The grade he gives you is the highest out of three you get from attendance, quizzes, and saints quizzes. His lectures arent the most riveting, but they are super detailed and interesting. He is VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE and he addressed hard topics very well. If you have any questions he really wants you to ask him so he can help you find an answer.
A great professor, but it was a really high cut off
He is one of the best religion professors I've ever had. He lectures are amazing and he is one of the most knowledgeable people about the restoration. The guy looks like a football coach and teaches with the same passion as one. I highly recommend taking his class and make sure you set aside time to do the tests and quizzes.
I hated this class. Lectures were just him reading off the power points, so class was boring/pointless. It's easy to get A's on all the quizzes and homework, but you spend hours on them because they're all, "Which of these is NOT a correct summary of a paragraph in this reading?" You literally are supposed to schedule out 3 hours to take the final
Literally one of my most favorite teachers. He is a Church historian and an editor of the Saints books so he really knows what hes talking about! His lectures are inspiring and I learned a lot. It didnt feel like a ton of homework but you have to listen or read before class and reading quizzes can take a little time. But I would 100% recommend!
Professor Harper is so amazing. He does have high expectations which can make the papers difficult. Don't let that scare you off though! If you listen and sincerely try to do your best it will show and you will do good. Professor Harper is willing to work with you every step of the way and you will truly learn how to be a seeker in this class.
Emphasizes what he does not know, as well as what he knows and how he knows it. Does not make unsubstantiated claims and approaches the class with a historical lens. Three essays, all fairly easy. The final and quizzes are easy, with open book/ note. Read "Saints", vol. 1, and took 4 quizzes on the content. Great lectures.
He was one of the main editors on Saints, Vol. 1. His lectures were mostly just him talking and presenting slides, yet still interesting. He clearly explains what we know and what we don't know about certain topics, and encourages faithful perspectives. I feel it's helped me to know where to go when I have questions about difficult topics.
Great course, and a great professor. He is so knowledgeable on this subject, and I loved attending his class. Read Saints and take quizzes and you'll pass. Everything is open notes, and it's amazing! Great religion course everyone needs to take!
I abosulety love Brother Harper but there are 2 important things to know before taking this class: 1) your attendance percentage of the semester is the cap for your final grade (you attend 27/28 days the highest grade you can get is a 96%). 2) The cut off for an A is 97%. 96.9 is an A-. 93.9% is a B+. Course material is amazing though.
Grading scale is absurd: 97% is the minimum for an A. Final is closed note, and the study guide I made for myself with the information was 46 pages long. Attendance is mandatory, and you can only get a grade percentage as high as your attendance percentage. If you miss one day, there's no way to get an A. Hardest and most unfair religion class.
Tough religion class. Lots of reading and the grade scale is crazy in my opinion. 97% is an A. If you are taking a rigorous major I wouldn't recommend.
The grade scale is completely out of line with any other professor in the same class. 97% and higher is an A. So essentially if you get a 94% in the class, you will have an A- while someone with an identical grade in the same class taught by a different professor would have an A. Midterms are completely unrelated to the final. Emails are demeaning.
Brother Harper was an amazing teacher. He is very passionate about the Restoration which made the class interesting. Attendance is mandatory and your final grade cannot be higher than your attendance percentage. The grade scale is a bit controversial, but it is not unattainable to receive a desired grade. I would absolutely take this class again.
The grade scale is tough (97 is the cutoff for an A+) and attendance is mandatory but Bro. Harper is a great teacher. Very passionate and wants his students to learn rather than memorize. His class is straightforward with open note/reading quizzes. I didn't pay attention much is class because everything you need to know is bolded in the readings.
Bro. Harper knew a lot about the subject and was really passionate during lectures, but exams are unrelated to lectures. You have to answer questions based on what he thinks is correct, because multiple answers will be correct. Tons of material you have to try to memorize, but test has few questions and is very specific.
I would not recommend taking this class from Bro Harper. It is extremely time consuming. You have to memorize an absurd amount of material based on what he thinks is correct. I had 14 pages of material in my study guide, which is just unreasonable for a religion class. Exam is a joke. There are multiple correct answers for every question.
Grading is not changed from university policy. 94% and above is an A so no worries. Lecture is used to answer student questions and concerns about reading material. Very informative. The final is the hardest part of the class but he actually bolds the information he might test on in the readings I would highly recommend him as a professor.
grade was entirely based on quizzes and tests, and some had trick questions or were about a super specific detail in the long reading he assigned so it's basically impossible to get an A. There is no extra credit. I loved the class and learned a lot, but it was frustrating because I understood the content, did the work, asked for help, to no avail.
Difficult to work with. Great person, awful class. $35 for TopHat. Grade based on 2-question quizzes at beginning of class and Final. Said readings for every class were double. Does not care about your grade. Student: "TopHat isn't working" Steven crossing a line: "I think it's a worthiness detector." Didn't send in final.
I felt confused for most of the semester about what my grade was. The way he grades the class seems flawed but he is fair.
Really confusing class. There are a lot of better options for professors to take it from.
This is class was horrible. I have never wanted to be done with a class more in my life. Class is only based on quizzes that are extremely hard and the final. The quizzes are based on a book he wrote, and so the questions are very tedious. Also, if you miss one question, it drops your quiz grade to 66%. Do not take this class.
As you can see from other ratings, yes this class was work! BUT it is so so so worth it. I learned more and gained more from this class than any other and I was willing to put the work in because it seemed most important to me. If you are ready to build your testimony take this class. He is a great man build a relationship with him he is amazing!
This is an amazing class, ran someone who cares so much about his students. He truly wants you to learn and wants the tests and homework to reflect what you did. BUT THIS IS THE BEST CLASS AND BEST PROFFESOR. If you are ready to work for your testimony and truly gain one of JS! Loved all of it. Take this class to learn how you know what you know.
I never thought I would care enough to give a review on a professor. I wish I listened and never took his class. so unnecessarily hard... he expects you to master a book he wrote. Most of your grade comes from quizzes, and he try's to hard to try and trick you with the quiz questions. For your sake, don't take him there are so many better options
I absolutely loved Brother Harper. He was always available to talk with his students. He completely changed my understanding of temple work and helped me gain a testimony of the restoration. The reading is not extensive, and the quizzes are manageable if you do the reading. No midterm, nobody failed the final.
The class is tough with a lot of reading, but the lectures are worth attending. Unstuck AI helped me streamline study prep for the challenging exams. Grading is strict but fair if you put in the work.
Brother Harper is one of the most intelligent, insightful teachers I've ever had. I have learned SO MUCH from his class. However, it is nearly impossible to get a good grade in the class, I had 100% attendance and read every reading twice and I barely got a B-
He does not put any of the grades in until the last day of the semester. You have no idea what grade you have until its too late. You spend an absurd amount of hours doing work outside of class and this class was not spiritually strengthening AT ALL! DO NOT TAKE REL C 320 from Bro Harper it was a nightmare.
Brother Harper is kind but his grading policy is unreasonable. Your entire grade comes from 2-5 question quizzes and the final exam, and the questions on these were very difficult and specific. At times I did the assigned reading up to four times and still missed a question. Overall it's an unnecessarily hard class that caused me a lot of stress.
