Dr. Harris is the lesser of two evils. I would take him over Dr. Sumner any day. He assigns less work than Sumner. Regardless, be prepared for weekly homework assignments that each take 2 hours and the same thing with quizzes. Also, sometimes his TAs don't even know the answers to his HW or quizzes. He probably will never respond to your emails.
I absolutely loved his class. He is a great teacher and makes it easy to follow his slides in lecture. He is always willing to help clear confusion and prepares students for the tests. I also did study edge weekly to keep up with the material, but overall the class is very challenging but if you put in the effort you will succeed.
He's really chill. The class requires a lot of work.
I had Harris for Chemistry 1. Although he makes the material easier to learn, the class overall is hard for students at UF. Get 2 questions wrong on the exams and you already have a solid B. I found his lectures exciting. I would prefer Harris over the other professors in the Chemistry department. He is very social and engaging in class.
Coming into chem I was terrified and it was Harris's first time teaching at UF so I didn't know what to expect. Honestly, he's the best because we had way less homework and quizzes and he was so nice throughout the semester. The tests are the same no matter what teacher you get so just READ THE TEXTBOOK and you'll be okay. Practice makes perfect.
Harris is by far the best Chem 1 professor at UF. Sumner assigns mountains of homework and quizzes that students can't keep up with, and Lopez doesn't teach test material until the day before the exam. Harris assigns maybe one or two homeworks a week, and is really helpful in office hours. On top of that, he's new, so he still cares about students.
His enthusiasm and ability to lecture enabled me to do very well! By far the best professor for chem 1 considering the homework, which definitely helped with the exams, engaging lectures, and flexibility. I got sick prior to one of the exams and he helped me schedule a retake; he also opened up a past due assignment for a friend. Loved him!
Be aware that the chemistry department at UF is trying to fail any students going through it. That being said, regardless of the professor you have for Chemistry you need Study Edge to pass with a good grade. Harris uses powerpoints written by the book and has no idea what is on the exam because he does not make the exam. Quizzes/HW on chegg.
Very enthusiastic and made the lectures more interesting and easier to understand. Tophat questions in class everyday mean attendence is required. Probably the best Chem 1 professor here.
Dr. Harris is a decent teacher, however I must admit I never used my notes from that class to study. To get an A in CHM2045, Study Edge is a must. The workload was very doable and class was interesting enough.
Professor Harris comes across as a really enthusiastic guy, but as the semester went on, I realized that he can't explain anything. I went to his office hours once to ask a question and his response didn't make any sense so I ended up at another professor's office hours. Take Korolev if you can. If you have Harris, Study Edge will be your BFF. GL!
It was easy to follow along with the lectures as he posts the powerpoints and lecture videos on canvas. He also allows you a decent amount of time to work out the sample problems and Top Hat. The worksheets completed in discussion prepare you for the exam as they had similar or harder questions. Overall the workload was easy to manage.
I LOVE Dr. Harris!! He is so amazing, caring, and funny. He knows what he is doing-- don't listen to the other reviews on here saying otherwise. He is BY FAR the best chem professor teaching Chem 1 right now. He gives homework that represents what will be on the exam, but don't underestimate the exams: they are tough and will try to trick you.
I had professor Harris for chem 1, and he was great. He was easy going and did not give too much homework. I definitely recommend getting study edge for this course. While Harris does a great job teaching, study edge reinforces the material, teaches things Harris left out, and provides extra practice. Definitely make sure you keep up w the material
The best professor for chem 1! it's a weed-out so obviously it's gonna be harder than it needs to be but Harris is very fair. keep up with the material; Study Edge isn't necessary but does help a lot to study for exams. his office hours helped a lot, too. he's a great professor & a nice guy; I would take him for all my chem classes if I could!
Makes you buy a textbook then reads from the textbook for lectures. Doesn't explain the topic fully but expects you to be able to solve the highest difficulty problem of a concept as soon as the 25-minute lecture is over.
What makes him better than all other chem professors at UF is that his HW and discussion worksheets are extremely close to the exams, as long as you do the work you won't find the exams difficult. I think he's a mediocre lecturer, study edge is EXTREMELY helpful in terms of learning content but doing his WS and HW is essential to pass the class.
Good overall teacher and person. Cares about students but the chem dept doesn't give much leeway for curves and dropping assignments. AWFUL AT RESPONDING TO EMAILS so if you need something go to him before or after class or during office hours. CHM2045 is definitely a weed out class so prepare to put in a lot of work with no curve
Loved him. Super helpful and funny. His class was not too hard but still allowed students to learn the material. I would definitely recommend.
Compared to other Chem 1 professors at UF, Dr. Harris is the best option. He goes fast but covers all the material and he's accessible outside of class and through email. Not as work heavy as Sumner and cover all the material unlike Lopez. A lot of self studying/learning is required, but stay on task and you'll be fine.
Dr. Harris is probably the best chem 1 professor teaching the course. This is a tough class and you can't count on a curve as students make perfect scores. He has an average replace policy that can save you from one bad exam. Study edge is helpful for this class and will definitely help you learn tougher material that he may not cover in lectures.
Dr. Harris is great. I think he is a wonderful professor. He is entertaining and genuinely cares about the students. I am just not good at chemistry so my experience was not the best. From what I've heard, Dr. Harris is the best chem teacher so if you are able to, take his class.
Dr. Harris is probably one of the best professors I've had so far. He's enthusiastic about chemistry which makes his lectures much more appealing. He also does not give much homework, but his exams can be challenging; exam 2 especially. Going to lectures, doing practice problems, and keeping up with the content are your best bet.
This is a tough corse but Dr. Harris was pretty good at explaining things. just takes a alot of practice and studying
Prof. Harris is currently the best Prof. at UF for CHM 2045. This class is quite a challenge, and if you don't put in the work you will fail. That said, I really enjoyed Prof. Harris. He is funny and really cares about his students. Go to his office hours - they are a big help. I would gladly recommend Harris.
Dr. Harris is the best professor for chem 1. His class is harder though in some regards due to how it is set up. For the exams given though, he is the best professor to have. He is a really cool guy, and he will make your time less miserable. The course itself takes a lot of work. Expect to put more time into it than most courses at UF.
Professor Harris is an awesome professor! CHM2045 is a hard class, and he was able to help significantly before the class transitioned online (I had him spring 20 when covid-19 moved the rest of the semester online). Exams are very difficult, and I'd highly recommend study edge. The course became much tougher online, but Prof Harris is the best!
Never responds to emails. I didn't think he really knew how to teach. Office hours were pretty useless. Survived by going to office hours and practice question from the textbook and previous exams. He has no idea what is on the exam. His teaching got worse once corona hit, which is why I didn't get an A.
Dr. Harris is a pretty good professor for CHM2045, although most of the time I felt that his lectures were not enough to apply knowledge from his lessons to homework. He would teach the basic lessons at first, which were easy most of the time, I just wished he did problems that applied the basic lessons to questions that are similar to the exam.
I took CHM2045 in the spring of 2020 and I thought that most of the information in class and exams were very fair. I will add that some of the HW questions seemingly came out of nowhere so I bought a chegg subscription for $15/mo (because study edge is damn expensive) and was able to pass with an A without dropping a small fortune on study material
I had Harris for Chem 1 and again for Chem 2. My CHM2046 was split between two professors and I had Harris for the first half. I thought his exams were very fair based on what was included in his lectures, but if you don't study or do practice problems you may not do so well.
This is just a very difficult class for a lot of people in my opinion. Dr. Harris makes the course bearable though and he really does seem to genuinely care about his students. He tries to make the lectures as engaging and funny as possible. The tests are very hard though; you will need study edge if chem is not your strength.
Dr. Harris seems to genuinely care about his students which is why I specifically chose him as my professor. My laptop broke down during one of my exams and after I explained to him what happened, he let me take a makeup exam on the date of my choosing. He's an amazing professor who will work with you if you're struggling. Still, get study edge.
His lectures were easy for me to understand. I did not read the textbook much, I mainly used YouTube videos and his lectures. He is really sweet and understanding of your situation when you reach out to him through email. His homework and quizzes are similar to what is on the tests. Highly recommend him as a chem 1 professor!
Dr. Harris is the best CHM2045 professor at UF. His lecture videos this online semester were fairly helpful and he provides many practice homework and assignments so you can succeed on the exams. The class is a weed-out and is test-heavy but he makes it as enjoyable as Chem 1 possibly could be.
There are no past exams, but that's because all of the exam questions are going to be variations of all the questions in the homework, worksheets, pre-lecture assignments, quizzes, practice assignments, etc. Even if you don't know the material that well, know how to answer the questions by practicing or writing down the steps.
Dr. Harris is a nice guy but just like other chem professors (at least online) his lectures suck. They are just basic introductions and as the semester went on he didn't even give examples. You will need to teach yourself a lot. The class is designed to be a weed out class so be prepared to study a lot. Ive heard he is the best they have though.
Having Dr. Harris as a professor was refreshing because he seemed to actually care about his students and help them out where needed. The tests are hard (that doesn't change no matter which professor you take) but Dr. Harris is the best option out of the other UF chem professors.
The questions on the exam are similar to the topic of the homework and worksheet questions, but are worded COMPLETELY differently on the exam to confuse you. Exams are difficult (not 100% multiple choice anymore), and I didn't find the lectures to be that helpful as time progressed. Read the textbook and get study edge if you're not a chem genius.
Dr. Harris really is a good professor, and cares about helping his students. Chemistry is a hard class overall, but he does a pretty good job of explaining most concepts. Homework/quiz wording is a lot like test wording. Tests aren't curved and there's no extra credit. Study Edge definitely helps
This class can be extremely time-consuming and challenging. There is quite a lot of homework but it does help prepare you for exams along with other practice assignments. Dr. Harris' lectures are not enough to do well on the exams and are not all that helpful. I would recommend keeping up with assignments and doing a lot of practice to succeed.
Dr. Harris made a stressful course even more stressful by posting lectures and pre-lecture assignments late. We always seemed to be a chapter behind other CHM2045 classes and were still expected to test on the same day. We usually had to cram a chapter before an exam. Overall, a cool guy not the best professor. TIP: GET STUDY EDGE
Dr. Harris is undeniably the best professor the chemistry offers for CHM2045. With that being said the course is difficult and you cannot fully rely on his lectures for preparation for homework and exams. It is best to do several practice problems before the exam. His lectures are not bad and certainly better than other chemistry professors at UF.
Dr. Harris is very kind and understanding, however, his lectures are vague and there were issues in prompt responses, posting grades by deadlines, accurately posting due dates etc. We were always behind the other classes which made studying rough. After investing in StudyEdge and not wasting time watching lectures, I started to improve immensely.
Dr. Harris is a really kind professor. I thought his tests were fair and similar to the homework and worksheets. Get StudyEdge though to do well. I came in without chemistry background and got an A, but I worked for it. Its really not as bad of a class as everyone says. Dr. Harris is very accessible and willing to help. Expect lots of work though.
Class started very rocky because Professor Harris didn't post homework or quizzes to one of the chapters before it was tested on, so all parts of the Chapter went virtually un-studied for the test. After that, however, the class got back on schedule and everything went well. Class is hard, but grunt work will get you a good grade.
Did not really interact much with Dr. Harris, but he communicated with students about exams and the homework assignments were very helpful in preparing for exams. StudyEdge is always a great resource, I did not really watch lectures.
I honestly didn't interact with Harris much due to it being a flipped classroom, and his lectures weren't always worth watching. He was super nice and knowledgeable in office hours, but if my TA weren't great I don't know how I would have survived this class. I taught myself most of the material and definitely wish I got Study Edge.
Lectures vague, and it was really hard learning online with no in class stimulation. Tests were 30 questions and mostly free response, which was ridiculous considering everything going on. He is a kind man who seems to care, but in terms of learning, there was not really much to it. StudyEdge and practice is key.
Professor Harris was very kind and he well explained the material. Despite this, his lectures were vague for being 30+ minutes each. Wish he wouldve used more practice problems so taking him requires a good amount of work in your own time.
Didnt watch many of the lectures and still got a C+. But he is a really good professor and clearly teaches.
The homework and quizzes are good because they are like the tests. I think it's just the right amount of homework. I highly recommend going to office hours if you have questions about anything or need help on hw. You get multiple attempts on hw (it's on canvas). He explains stuff pretty well in his lectures.
The only reason I was able to succeed in this class was thanks to Study Edge. Professor Harris is amazing, but the concepts were super difficult for me to grasp and Study Edge helped to simplify it all.
I got an A in this course last year. I used Study Edge and Rich (the study expert) helped me get an A! Study edge provides tons of review material and online resources to supplement lecture material. I also loved going to the live Study Edge Reviews to learn the content. I recommend using study edge because they have zoom calls with free tutoring!
Dr. Harris is by far the best professor for Chem 1 and 2 at UF. It is not even close. His lectures actually make sense and cover the material necessary. His sections always have the highest exam averages by several points because he prepares the most. His class definitely has more work than the others, but if you want to learn Chem he's the guy.
Dr. Harris is a great professor. His lectures go over the material in the textbook, but there are other concepts on the homework that kind of have to be self taught. He's quite funny. The exam are tough, but doable if you have been studying for a few days.
Yes, Harris is the best option at UF for General Chem. But that's not saying much, he is super inconsistent and has not been accommodating whatsoever during the pandemic. Takes super long to release exam scores (we literally bully him to do it) and doesn't give us any good insight on what to expect on exams. Just try your hardest I guess
Don't let the good reviews fool you, this class is ridiculously hard for no reason whatsoever. You could watch all the lectures and go to the Study Edge sessions and still fail. Lectures were just reading off a PowerPoint slide. Really no help was given to us even when we had a failing average of 55%. Oh, and the department does not care either :)
The only time you can interact with the professor is through office hours. I found that his lectures were not very clear and weren't that helpful. I relied on Study Edge for the entire semester. Even then, though, I didn't do well because the tests are 60% of your grade and more difficult than they need to be.
I took him because apparently he is the best CHM2046 professor, but that doesn't mean anything. The grade cutoffs were higher than CHM2045 and exams are worth 85% of your grade even though it is harder. He is not understanding at all and blames the department for everything. The good reviews here are just because he's nice and tries to be relatable
This was the hardest class I've taken in my life so far, and Harris was not there to help students through it. He was often late to office hours, exams were much harder than the material we were given, and if I had not signed up for study edge after the second exam I would have failed. Ironically, he is still the best chemistry prof at UF :/
Amazing lectures. He was entertaining and caring throughout the whole semester. Sure, he could have improved considering the pandemic going on, but he was helpful during office hours and over email. Understand all of his homeworks, quizzes, and PLAs and you will do more than fine in this course. Mostly graded on exams tho, so do well on those!
Study edge was a must for me in this class. I didn't watch any lectures outside of SE and felt completely prepared. Definitely make sure to score high on the first exam because the second and third are very hard (average of 50% on #2). The workload was a lot and exams are very important but expected bc its a chem class.
I did not find his lectures to be that good (both in CHM2045 and CHM2046), but he is still the best choice amongst professors for this class. He is understanding in giving us many attempts on assignments, but I wish he gave accurate timeframes for when he would release our scores as it stressed many of us out. StudyEdge is always the best though.
I had Harris for CHM2045 and CHM2046. Most of the problems on his test reflect the HWs and discussion worksheets, so make sure you study those. He is still the best chem professor, even though he gives mediocre lectures. Many times he released test scores after the date that he had promised, which was frustrating. Overall, take Harris if you can.
Harris may not be the best professor in the chem department, but he was overall the best option for this class. I went in person to his lectures, and as long as you followed along they were informative. Although you will need to get ready to read a lot to do well. I personally didn't need studyedge.
The chem department was evil to us this semester but Harris was still the best option out of all the chem 1 professors. Taught myself everything and only passed because of study edge. Your grade essentially relies mainly on your exam scores and these exams were extra hard for no reason this semester. Harris work was more manageable than the others
Professor Harris is the best gen chem professor at UF. Chemistry is hard no matter who you take it with and a lot of the bad reviews on here don't reflect that. You have to study and make sure you understand homeworks, worksheets, and PLA's. He's not the best lecturer, but if you practice and study A LOT you should be okay. I didn't use studyedge.
Harris was a good lecturer but his lectures followed the textbook readings verbatim. I found that going to lecture and reading the textbook was useless because they were the exact same. He stressed us out by releasing exam scores much later than he had said. Didn't use Study Edge and managed to get an A-. Study and you'll be fine
Most questions on exams are from HW and worksheets, so know the questions on those. He releases exam grades 3 days after he claims he will. Lectures are useless since he copies the textbook verbatim, and he never used TopHat (bye-bye $20 subscription). He's the best option amongst the chem profs, but that's like calling a Kardashian the smartest.
Read the book religiously and do the end-of-chapter book questions (hint hint exam questions). Study edge is helpful but the book will be your best bet. Harris can be all over the place but he really does care about the students. If you ever have any problems, email him and he can be accommodating. Exams will probably have mistakes each time.
Professor Harris is a really nice guy, and does care a lot about his students. This being said, both semesters I have taken a class with him there has been much confusion. We do not get updated on things in a timely manner, and it is hard to get ahold of him (I've sent many emails with no replies). He still is the best option for a chem professor.
Harris is your best option for CHM2045. He gave less hw than the other professors and the one mandatory lecture a week was the goat. Study Edge is your friend. Focus on doing well on the first exam. Join the GroupMe. Harris' lectures weren't amazing but I passed by just using Study Edge. The tests do suck. Watch the Broward Review.
Professor Harris is definitely the stand-out amongst the Gen Chem professors at UF. His lectures are succinct but detailed. In essence, he gets into the most important details. I wish there were more examples for the math applications, which are the focus of much of the exams.
dr. harris is a very fair professor whose assignments are truly meant to prepare you for the exams rather than just act as busy work. his lectures are a little convoluted but thats only bc he has a lot of information to cover, which he does well. you can use study edge but also get a good grade without. super helpful during office hours as well!
Challenging course but definitely get Study Edge and you will be fine!
Dr. Harris was definitely the nicest professor out of all of the chem professors and was very personable! I didnt care to much for his lectures because he basically read off the slides and I feel that going to office hours didnt help too much because he would explain things in the same manner. Study Edge helped break down the material a lot!
Honestly hes the best of the chemistry professors at UF. The chemistry department as a whole is horrible. His exams are bad, but they are not entirely written by him. He gives the least busy work of the chem 1 profs. If you fail even one exam... good luck
I loved Harris' vibe so much in class! He brings joy to Chemistry honestly and makes class enjoyable to attend. However, he does not ALWAYS prepare us the BEST for the exams, so you do need to study a bit on your own. But his energy is NEEDED in a chem 1 class !!!
He is one of the best profs for chem, but Study Edge is still definitely worth getting. The class is ridiculous hard if you have no experience with chem and still extremely annoying if u do. Be ready for exams to be way harder than homework. You need to attend lectures only because of iclicker questions, which are about 2% of your grade.
Harris is an ok prof. Still he is better than the alternatives, much easier and less busy work/random quizzes. I would recommend just reading through book, lectures are boring and drug out and usually not very helpful. Less strict than other CHM2045 profs, but overall Harris did not contribute much to my learning, but wasn't a hinderance either.
It's very easy to lag behind in this class due to the sheer amount of homework. Once you fall behind, it's absolute hell. Be ready to worship your textbook. Homework is very good finals/exam review, and there's a lot of supplemental material. No post-lecture recording but the lectures are really helpful as well as the instructor.
Harris is the best of the CHM2045 teachers. He is a decent lecturer and he is entertaining enough but it is still Chemistry. Your grade is almost entirely dependent on your work outside of his class but he has less homework assignments than other Chem teachers and is more engaging.
Definitely take Sumner. Harris has easier in class work and assignments due but he doesn't know what's on the test so your grade plummets anyways. Teaches off powerpoints that can be found in the book, and rarely responds to questions or emails.
Prof Harris was a pretty cool guy but not that amazing of a professor. His lectures were mediocre and did not contribute to any of my learning. He does give less HW than the other Chem professor but I would rather more work and a better lecturer. Im gonna be honest only reason I passed was Study Edge Get Study Edge. it. is. worth. it.
Dr. Harris is an amazing chem prof, despite any negative comments. Take him over the other chem profs. He is happy and upbeat in every lecture, and he makes learning chemistry somewhat fun. He is extremely caring for all students and genuinely wants to see you succeed. UF chem is difficult in general, so be prepared to work for your grade.
No professor in the chem department will give you all of the information you need to get an A. You MUST go beyond what is taught in lecture to succeed (get studyedge). For Dr. Harris, he is the best option. He was always fun and enthusiastic. He explained things/ answered questions very well as long as you go out of your way to go to office hours.
Dr. Harris is a great professor. Chem is a hard class no matter which professor you get, but I think he is the best option. He makes lectures interesting and has a sense of humor. The exams were always fair, but expect to dedicate lots of time to studying. My biggest tips are go to office hours and get study edge! It will help you so much.
Dr. Harris is the easier of the CHM2045 professors to take. He gives less work but his lectures aren't always the most elaborate. StudyEdge is a must for this class or you will not get a good grade. I struggled to get a B+. He prepares you less than Sumner but If you're an independent learner than he is the better option.
Harris is definitely the best choice for gen chem 1. The structure of the course and the design of the tests aren't directly decided by him so I cant really judge him for that but the workload was manageable and made sense given the nature of the course. It is a difficult class but if you get Study Edge and practice a lot you'll be good.
This professor is amazing. He wants to help you succeed. The class is rigorous and the exam averages reflect this. You have to do all the work and study hard outside of class to get close to an A. Very gratifying class in the end.
Overall, Harris was a really fun/caring guy and taught well. The content itself wasn't hard and many of the everyday assignments were easy A's. The class is 83% exams though and those were hard, no curve, and aren't made directly by Harris. If willing to do extra studying with Study Edge not so bad, I just wasn't.
Take Dr. Harris. Chemistry classes are hard on their own but he at least makes lectures enjoyable and engaging, just be sure to use office hours and discussion periods to answer your own questions. This class is hard if you don't use your resources but you can get an A without Study Edge if you truly put in the effort to understand all material.
By far the best gen chem 1 prof. The lectures are not anything special, just reads them off the book basically. Also I recommend buying the book just in case but you won't need it. Assigns the least amount of work out of all chem profs but it is still a lot. Do not fall behind and get study edge, it is life saving. Harris is funny and caring.
Dr. Harris seemed very enthusiastic about the course, but he is terrible at explaining the material in a way that makes sense. I stopped watching lectures and just paid the $50 a month for study edge. It's so much easier that way, and you actually learn the material. Also don't bother buying the book I think I used it maybe twice.
Hes probably the best chem1 professor, just get study edge and youll be okay. his lectures dont really help but hes really funny and nice so i always went. Honestly dont get the book its useless, but without studyedge i wouldnt have passed. This class is hard in itself but he wasnt terrible.
There are a lot of assignments every week so don't ever fall behind. The course is pretty manageable if you do the work though, passed with an A without ever getting Study Edge.
Professor Harris is really the best when it comes to Chem 1 professors at UF. Chemistry will always be hard, but Harris cares about his students and tries to make class interesting with jokes or relevant content. He pretty much covers what is in the book but he makes it easier to understand. I really enjoyed his class and can't recommend him enough
Get Study Edge and you will succeed in this course. His lectures are okay, but I wouldn't waste your time focused on them. If you do all of the Study Edge material provided for this course, you should easily get an A.
Dr. Harris helped a bit for exams, and only did the bare minimum to help pass. He was helpful in office hours, but many people went before exams so it might be hard if you need more help. If you want to really excel and pass with an A, getting Study Edge will probably help more. They gave problems that were tailored to what the exam would be like.
being a "weed out" class I knew chem 1 was going to be hard. While professor harris is probably better than the other chem 1 professors, this class is still very hard. This is my second time taking it because I dropped first semester. I now have study edge and they help me understand the material better than professor harris.
This class is notoriously known for being tough but study edge definitely saved my life. I liked Professor Harris almost as much as I love Peter and Rich. Without study edge I am certain I wouldn't have passed this class, they saved my grade and GPA.
This class was honestly a pretty hard class. He was a fine professor and definitely the easiest option there was, but I would really recommend Study Edge for this class. They offered a bunch of resources to study for the exams which is basically what your grade is based off of and I would highly recommend!
Harris gives a lot of practice problems to help with the homeworks, quizzes, and PLAs, however, I still struggled with the material in this class since it is pretty difficult. I used Study Edge for this class and they helped me actually understand the material so much better than I did in the class itself.
Dr.Steven Harris is a charismatic and well-spoken teacher. He responds to questions quickly either in class or over email. I mostly used StudyEdge through this course doing the packets and videos and then using Dr. Harris's lectures as review and practice. The practice exams Studyedge puts out are similar to the material we see in the exams.
Harris is a pretty chill professor, who cares about his students and how they perform in his class. Very approachable and responded to my emails quickly, especially during final grade inputs. I recommend using Study Edge for this class. Compared to Harris' lectures, the Study Edge videos really helped me grasp the content.
Professor Harris was amazing! He is funny and teaches very well. You get several attempts on the homework as well, highly recommend!
Harris just teaches by the textbook-if you ask him a question he finds difficult to answer on the spot his response is "too bad". Exams cover difficult content and they make up most of your grade, but homework has multiple attempts. I use study edge and still did not do well on exams
He was a great guy but he wasn't the best teacher. I had to retake again and passed with an A- with another chem teacher because I failed his class and I wasn't the only one. The homework helps but doesn't give you an idea for test questions. Use study edge and redo old exams is the best bet and ask questions to you TA.
Steven Harris isn't a bad professor. I dont like how he lectures personally. Study Edge helps a lot, don't rely too much on it. If I could redo the class, I would have gone to lecture every week, go to study hours, and use study edge as a ADDITIONAL resource. Don't take final lightly, its a lot of content. dropped my grade from a B+ to B-.
While Harris is a nice guy (extended an assignment for me for an extra two days) and super accessible outside of class, his lectures were very elementary and irrelevant to the exams. If you wanna do well I would recommend Study Edge and to always keep up!!! Take every exam seriously and every HW/PLA/etc. because everything counts in the end!!
Harris's lectures do not really help with the exams as they are written by a different professor. Homework is manageable and so are PLAs. I was in a flipped class which meant I had to watch a few lectures prior to class. Get study edge, Harris's explanations and lectures are definitely not enough.
Dr. Harris was a very nice professor that would help you with the practice problems in class if needed. Honestly, the homework questions or the quizzes do not really prepare you for what the exam questions are like. However, I will say that he taught the class very well and is very funny. I will say he is the best professor for CHM2046.
I was worried I wouldn't do well without Studyedge in this course but I did. However, I still had to put in a lot of time to learn the material and do the homework. Don't neglect reading the textbook, using online resources, going to the lectures, and attending office hours. Learn the material well and early instead of cramming multiple lessons.
Professor Harris was good at explaining concepts and made sure that his students understood what they were being taught. You can tell that he really cares about the subject and is passionate in what he does. Be sure to study ahead of time for his exams, as they are difficult and make up most of your grade. The homework were difficult but helpful.
Dr. Harris is the best out of all the CHM2045 profs. He is funny and explains the material well. You can tell he cares about his students. The class is difficult regardless. 15-20 hrs of out-of-class work, tests count for 85% of your grade. Only reason I passed was because of StudyEdge. Beware of Exam 2!!!!
Overall Harris was a solid professor. He doesn't assign a ton of HW which is nice, but also means its easy to slack off. His lectures are pretty much straight from the textbook, but his tests are fair and not too hard.
Dr. Harris has been one of my favorite professors at UF. He is very charismatic, and it makes his lectures enjoyable. However, to get a good grade in this class, you must put in extra work outside of class. I did a lot of practice problems and watched the study edge videos. Dr. Harris is easily accessible outside of class if you have any questions.
sumner & harris both taught this class for each have of summer overall i think both professors have a lot of knowledge on the topics covered sumner assigns a lot of assignments & her exams are very difficult paying attention in class with her clicker questions does help harris was a very fair teacher as well as were his exams do opt hw & Study Edge
Dr. Harris is by far the best gen chem prof you can get. The material is hard, but he takes the time to break it down in lecture and in office hours. His exams are fair, but make sure to talk to your TAs and go over extra homework so that you are prepared.
Dr. Harris is a sweet prof. However, his teaching style didn't work for me. His lectures are straight from the textbook and practice problems are explained using words. Overall, he's much more chill than Sumner, but I believe Sumner better prepares students for the exams and gives much better explanations/examples.
HE DOESN'T USE A CURVE WHATSOEVER
There is a ton of work for this class, expect to do about 12 homework assignments in a week. The lectures are clear and easy to follow, but this is a difficult class. Practice outside of the class is NECESSARY to pass. I highly recommend study edge. I found the exams overly complicated for no reason, just because they are made to be.
Dr. Harris is a solid choice for chem 1. The class is definitely tough, but Harris makes it doable. Be prepared to spend hours doing homework, studying, and practicing. He's super accessible and will help you with any questions you have but regardless of what professor you have, be prepared to WORK for your grade. The course is a weed out for many.
He has a flipped classroom (watch lectures before class). Lectures can be confusing but he does a decent job clarifying in class. Lots of homework/assignments, but all are manageable and help prepare for tests. I do not read the textbook. I think Study Edge is very helpful for this class, although it is doable without it.
Harris was amazing! and enhanced my understanding. I felt like I built a connection with Harris during office hours along with other students. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. He created a safe environment and although Chemistry is VERY difficult, he explained things well, I just did badly on the first exam. I am so lucky I was able to have him as a professor.
He is ok, and from what I heard the best prof for this class. It's a time-consuming and hard class, so good luck. Study Edge for this class is amazing. One of my favorite "profs" is the Study Edge guy who covers this class.
You don't have to read textbook, but you will be bombarded with assignments. The lectures are helpful but excessive practice problems and studying are necessary to get an A on the exams. Very fast-paced, but it isn't impossible and you can take other hard classes like Calc 2, Physics concurrently without too much strain.
Harris is a cool dude and the best option out of him and Sumner. The course itself is heavy and not something to underestimate (like I did). Homework, pre lecture assignments, aleks prep, aleks quizzes and hw, discussions, etc take up most of your time, but are worth little to nothing. Tests are the only thing that matters!!!
Exams are worth 60% of your grade so bombing tests can make you fall behind very fast. I tanked my first test and found myself working from behind the entire semester. The class itself is very difficult but Harris makes it as easy as he could to understand. You can tell he cares for his students.
This class was very difficult. The exams are the big things that impact your grade which can be tough. With the amount of assignments given outside of the exams (PLAs, Aleks HW, Aleks Quiz, Canvas HW), I wish those were weighted more. The only way I did well in this course is because of Study Edge. This semester, it was also a flipped style class.
This class was absolutely challenging and didn't know why I had to take it for my major. Prof Harris was a very nice lecturer, but his teaching style wasn't for me. I would often get confused on the lectures, PLAs, and Aleks hw/quizzes he assigns so I had to use study edge to understand. Exam questions were too specific.
Dr. Harris was very funny in class and you can tell he cares about his students. Exams are not made by him, so I would recommend Study Edge and practice tests to get a feel for what they are like. You definitely have to work hard and study to get a good grade in the class!
Dr. Harris was an excellent lecturer with a passion for chemistry and education. He could always break concepts down and was very approachable! While Dr. Harris was a great instructor, my main issue with CHM2045 is how your grade is entirely dependent on the exams with no extra credit opportunities. Put aside time for the large amount of homework.
I never took chemistry in high school and got placed into this class because of ALEKS. It was a massive struggle for me because I had to learn a ton of content in not a lot of time whereas most of the other people in the class had at least a year to be more familiar with the material. However, I learned the material really well thanks to him.
His class is a lot of work, and you can tell he doesn't write the material. But he is a good person, and if you put in the work for long term success, it will benefit. I got a B and C on the first 2 exams, but started going to office hours every week and got a 98 and 100 on the third and the final. He makes himself super accessible, but its a hard.
Dr. Harris is an extremely personable teacher who never ceases to show up to a lecture in a good mood. The course is exam heavy so take advantage of the worksheet problems, practice tests given (there's only 2 at most sadly), and above all else, go to office hours.
Dr. Harris was amazing for Chem 1. He did an excellent job explaining all the topics and made his expectations clear. He wanted all his students to succeed and made class fun. As long as you listen to the lectures and do the homework, you should be good.
Dr. Harris was such a caring professor, I wish he was teaching CHM2046 this semester. There's a lot of homework, but it's the same for the whole department. Definitely go to his office hours even if you don't think you'll need help, he can explain questions from assignments as you work on them. The optional homework helps the most with his exams.
He is super nice and funny; definitely one of the few professors that actually tries to make class interesting. His explanations are not the greatest though for chemistry, and I had to relearn a lot of the material through online videos.
Professor Harris is a really great guy and clearly passionate about what he teaches. However, your grade is over 80% determined by four exams including the final. There are recorded lectures and assignments to go along with them every week and lots of homework as well which felt like busy work. Study edge is necessary to pass this class!!
Professor Harris was the best teacher I have had at UF so far. I am now in Orgo 1, and I wish I could've taken Harris for all Chemistry classes here because he cared so much, had fair tests, and had way less homework than Sumnner. I honestly got a 70% in attendance (which is all you need for a 100% in attendance) and used Studyedge to receive my A+
Harris a charismatic guy, but when it comes to teaching I just couldn't pick up what he was throwing down. His flipped teaching style required you to watch the lecture beforehand then he read straight from the same PowerPoint you had to watch the night before. He was more of a middleman than someone to get your information from.
Great engaging lecturer. It is a flipped classroom so you will watch online lectures at home before coming to class. Lectures don't take super long though longest one was about 30min. It is a lot of work though and test are 60% of your grade.
I believe Harris is the best option for Chem 1, though I personally did not like the flipped classroom style of teaching, I found the amount of work kept me on top of everything. His office hours were the most helpful, you have to put in a lot of work after class.
Super great guy, very nice and funny. Great lectures that aren't extremely boring either. Very accessible to students and kept everyone in the know of what was going on. Had clicker questions in class. Difficult class but that's just chem.
Dr. Harris is an amazing professor! The class is flipped, and his online lectures aren't the best, but he is more than willing to explain concepts in different ways so you can understand. However, this course is a beast. Get study edge, go to office hours, consider a tutor, and be prepared to put in considerable time for CHM2045 (1-2 hours nightly)
Very average professor. I learned mostly from his pre-lecture assignments, but I'm not a fan at all of the flipped classroom design for chemistry. The exams are made up of lots of formulas and specific questions that are barely covered in class, but most of the class is just algebra and memorization. LOTS of homework per week. Good luck.
There can be upwards of 10 assignments due a week and most are ALEKS assignments that have little to do with exams. The flipped class structure is nice as you come to class prepared, however, it is extremely difficult to get questions answered on an individual basis.
Dr. Harris is a really nice professor and is very approachable. Chem 1, especially at UF, is hard, so there isn't really a lot the professor can do about the course load. There's a lot of work and I'd recommend getting study edge. Exams are heavily weighted so if you end up doing well on the exams there is some room to not do some of the homework.
Professor Harris is great, class is mostly set by department so there is a lot of hw.
Dr. Harris is by far the best chem professor at UF. He's approachable, kind, tries his best to make jokes, and really seems like he cares about the success of his students. I would 100% recommend taking his class over another professor. There's lots of HW, but it's a departmentally controlled class so not much can be done about that.
As expected, there was a lot of homework to do outside of class that didn't really prepare me that well for exams but gave good practice but get study edge, made a world of a difference. After a while, stopped watching lectures but it's very fast paced but the professor seemed nice and understanding. Gave 3 attempts for most assignments.
Although he's really nice, his exams have more issues than average and class materials don't always apply to exams. I'd take him over some professors, but I'd still choose Sumner over him. If you take him, I HIGHLY recommend the textbook. Doing every checkpoint question should at least give you a feel for the math questions he might ask. Good luck!
Professor Harris teaches really well and uses a lot of example problems in his lectures which I really appreciated. He's also a genuinely nice person and very funny in his lectures. But his exams this semester were kind of confusing because he tested on a lot of material that wasn't covered in class. Do the optional homework to study for exams.
Good professor and lectures are set up very well. If you practice a lot and do every assignment you should pass the exams. Study edge definitely helps a lot, but he does give you a lot of resources to prepare you for the exams.
this is the worst professor I've ever had. be prepared to drown in homework, take extremely hard exams, and not understand what is going on in class. with study edge YOU WILL PASS, going to class is not enough. He does not explain anything, he solves simple things and leaves the rest up to you. this course is SELF-LEARNING- office hours are PACKED
He's a nice professor but he is not good at teaching this material at all!! He pretty much reads the slides but doesn't say why things happen making it very hard to understand the material and wastes half of the class time talking about FB prediction scores. He also doesn't write the exams so it doesn't match with what he teaches all the time.
He will throw you 100 iclicker questions and 10 homeworks a day, without ever explaining how to do anything. Not even study edge could have helped me get an A on his exams, because he pulled out the most random facts. For exam 1-2 he wrote them with another teacher, but for exam 3 he pulled ALEKS assignments. DO NOT TAKE HIM
He's charismatic. But it doesn't help when all he does is narrate the slides to you. Going to class could be considered a waste of time, he adds nothing and it's better to read the textbook instead. He wastes precious class time predicting football scores for the next game(10 minutes). His lecturing is mediocre at best and only explains the basics.
Dr. Harris is my favorite professor I have ever had. He is very kind, understanding, and wants you to succeed. Chem 2 is a really hard course in general and regardless of professor, you have to put in a lot of work outside of class to do well. Watch lectures before class and go to office hours. Much much better than Benjamin, I have taken both.
I stopped attending lectures after the first exam since I realized they wasted my time. You're pretty much on your own with a textbook and some worksheets you won't get the key for. Good luck finding ways to practice when you finish his limited practice assignments. I hear Study Edge helps, but it's doable without it.
I had Dr Harris for both Chem 1 and 2. In Chem 1, I thought his exams were incredibly fair. It was still intense but that's expected. I don't know WHAT happened. The exams are NOTHING like exams from previous 2046 semesters either, even study edge won't help.Idk if he'll go back to how he used to be, but if he doesn't avoid his class at all costs.
Dr. Harris was a very personable professor. I felt comfortable to ask questions in this course. If you attend class, watch digital lectures, and complete the assignments (yourself) you are guaranteed to succeed, although it might not be the ideal grade. StudyEdge is a great resource for learning material if you struggle with traditional learning.
Hard class but doable with enough practice. I supplemented with study edge and felt like it helped. Assigns lots of ALEKS homework and quizzes which can be time consuming and annoying. Tests are fair but there were a few questions that were harder and I felt unprepared for. Decent professor but you will need to do a lot of studying on your own
He literally does not know how to write exams because the other chemistry professors always write the exams so the practice exams he releases never relates. Every class he spends 15 minutes doing the gator chomp and doing the affirmation which is fun until it gets annoying when half his class is failing.
hes nice but hate his teaching style. he only writes on the chalkboard so the kids on zoom can barely read anything and cannot write an exam for his life. when study edge says that his questions are worded weird thats how you know hes a bad teacher.
hes okay for chem 1 but for chem 2 he is probably one of the most traumatizing and worst professors i have ever had. i have never seen a professor smile and ask his students if the test was fair after i would hear some girl crying in the testing room the night before. good luck and godsend.
the aleks is literally useless and his lectures are half the time talking about something random or a waste of time. not to mention that he spends at least 10 minutes predicting the next game score while half the kids don't understand the material. if you care about your sanity do not take him for chem 2
i blame harris for the downfall of my gpa and mental health. there is no rhyme or reason why he does his exams that way but i urge anyone to not take his chem 2 class.
He is okay if you go to office hours and spend at least 10 hours per week doing the coursework but it is overall very hard to follow along. I wouldn't recommend him if Sumner or anyone else is teaching it.
It was a very challenging course considering that it is UF but I would also say that most of the challenging part of the course is being able to keep track of what Dr. Harris says. He is very nice and fun as a teacher but is unable to teach in a way that allows his students to prosper.
This is probably one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken at UF and it made this semester my worst semester ever. I have never seen so many people crying and looking stressed during/after the exam as these because Harris writes badly worded questions. Please if you care about your future gpa and your future self, do not take him
Dr. Harris wants you to succeed but does nothing to help you to. The PLAs, ALEKs, iClickers are all practically useless and nobody wants to do the worksheet questions when they don't look anything like the exam questions. Very difficult class but managed to pull through.
honestly don't bother going to class and do the iclicker remotely because he spends half the class talking nonsense and gets off track very easily. studyedge helps to fill in the gaps but make sure to know the content well because he likes to include a lot of conceptual ideas on the exam. only pulled through with the avg replace
Awful professor. Never knows what he's talking about and class is nonsense. Assignments are easy, exams are incredibly difficult and practice exams are not representative. Failing average for every exam with no extra credit/curve. Study edge is awesome but he tests on so many niche topics and concepts that you are pissed looking at the exam.
Exams make up 83% of your grade, but that's true for all CHM2045 classes. There is a lot of hw, but Dr. Harris tries to lighten the load a bit. Never had to use the textbook because his lecture videos covered the material so well. He is a super nice guy--very personable and cares about his students. He went on 2 walks with us after class!
bruh i had him during the summer after sumner and his teaching is the reason my grade dropped from an a to an a-. his exams are never close to the practice and he just overall does not teach whatsoever.
Nice, but doesn't teach in class at all. All lectures are recorded and mandated to be watched before class. The ALEKS homework assignments are super annoying and there are no quizzes like the other teachers have that are similar to the tests. Also, he never emailed me back, even to say no, when I asked him to round my grade up.
Harris had the best energy of any professor I've had and he is always enthusiastic in class. However, it is Chem 1 so the tests are written by Sumner and can be pretty difficult. I preferred Harris because there is less work so there is more time to do the Study Edge packets which is by far the most important thing to study before tests.
He's a fun teacher for Chem 1 and pretty good considering it is known as a tough weed out class. He has an online option if you do not want too go to the lectures. While class is not mandatory there's iclickers to answer which is a very small portion of your grade.
Good person horrible professor. his lectures make no sense so there is no point in going to class. the exams make no sense even with study edge all the exam averages were falling. you can feel so prepared for an exam and still do horrible
The course is hard no matter who you take it with but Dr. Harris is great. Lectures are pre-recorded and watched before each class which allows you to replay and pause any confusing parts. Would definitely take with Dr. Harris if you can
Dr. Harris is truly one of a kind. He always helped my friends and I with our chemistry problems and his door was always open to us. However, this class is still a weed-out class and I would recommend going to the office hours, tutoring hours, and making sure to watch the lectures because it is a flipped classroom.
Nice professor but the class is a lot of work. There's a ton of homeworks, quizzes, PLAs, iclicker questions, all which barely contribute to the overall grade. I had to figure out how to do the worksheet problems on my own most times because we didn't cover it. I recommend office hours, prioritizing the tests. No extra credit aside from on final.
He is the best option if you have to take Chem 1 at UF. Get study edge!
hardest class I have ever taken in my life. unless you are insanely smart or have a ridiculous amount of time to study for exams, do not expect to pass.
I took Dr. Harris for CHM2045 and it was alright. The class is made to be a weed-out course, so it is difficult. Exams are weighted heavy heavy. Personally, I don't think the lectures during class helped to supplement the learning needed for the exams. If you do a lot of studying outside of class the A is achievable. Plan to study A LOT.
High reviews on Harris are just because he is fun to be around and brings good vibes. But he doesn't actually teach. Sad that I just paid $600 for "vibes." I would avoid him and try to get Sumner, if you can, otherwise you will be fully teaching yourself (or spending more money on Study Edge) to pass.
AVOID. For the love of god please avoid him for 2046. This is not me being over dramatic, he is truly a nightmare for chem 2. Exams are nothing at all like what he teaches. Has the most niche concepts and questions on exams and gets frustrated when students verbalize that we have never seen a question like what he is asking.
He's a funny person, but not a great professor. I had chosen him over the other chem professors because of his high rating, but he was not for me. He had a flipped classroom style, so all the work had to be done before the lecture period, where he rarely went over practice problems. The prerecorded lectures were also old. $800 to teach myself :(
Chem 1 with Professor Harris is a challenging course, but engaging with the resources like the pre-recorded lectures and using Unstuck AI for study prep can really help. Stay on top of the workload and you can succeed.
Here is a list of things I would do before taking Steven Harris's chem class again. Harm a unicorn Voluntarily join WW3 Work in a coal mine Move to the arctic circle alone without a jacket
Horrible. Unorganized, doesn't explain what is due and what is not, and assigns random assignments without telling anyone. His "flipped" classes are just an excuse for him to assign the same old lecture videos and not have to do anything useful in classes (which are useless by the way). Just a horrible professor. Good luck finding someone better...
Great guy just prepare to study a lot if you want to get a good grade.
Dr. Harris was an amazing professor. I thought he was very funny and full of energy. However, he is not the best lecturer so you may need to study using outside sources. He gives you way more than enough homework and quizzes to study for exams. The exams are very difficult but with enough studying, they are not too bad. The TA's are also helpful.
He definitely isn't the worst person to take CHM2045 with, but I didn't find his lectures particularly helpful, and I didn't really like the way he taught the material. You definitely need to do a lot of self study for this class, and the exams where consistently harder than the practice ones. He's a good professor if you're prepared to study.
Please enroll in this chemistry course. So many epic highs in this classroom as well as short lived lows because Professor Harris was there for you (instantly there to pick you back up). Do the Pearson homework though it does count towards your grade.
He's a very good person and makes the class fun, but is not the greatest professor. The reversed classroom was not helpful and the recorded lectures were very long and old, then in class he would take 20 minutes going over the exact same things said in the video. The workload isn't bad, but the practice questions given DOES NOT help with any exams.
He's a really nice guy. I liked the reverse classroom bc I could skip class. The iclicker questions can be done outside of class, but he doesn't always pick the question on the photo, btw. 3 exams, 1-easy, 2- sucks, 3-okay. The final will either be the worst thing you've ever taken or super easy bc material they use. Long hwk; quizzes poorly align
He is an absolutely amazing guy who cares about you as a student. Beware though, his classroom is flipped so you will be spending a lot of time on homework / lectures. In class is attendance mandatory, and is just 4 or 5 practice problems a day, so it varies in how useful it is. Great guy, would take again! Exams are not easy, even the TAs admit.
Prof Harris is a great professor, but the class itself is very difficult if you aren't a chemistry person. Flipped classroom model is kinda hard to get the hang of, and lectures can be hard to understand when you're only watching a video for them. Exams are pretty difficult and a large portion of the grade.
If this was based on personality, 5/5. He was eager to help and funny. However, the unhelpful textbook and flipped lectures weren't enough to do well in this class without study edge. If you go to every single office hours, I'm sure you'd do okay. But in the spirit of efficiency, don't take his class without study edge and/or frequent study groups.
GET STUDY EDGE! Dr. Harris is chill, but I didn't like the flipped classroom style. The lecture videos are boring and time consuming if you take notes. The work load is heavy. I did significantly better in the class after getting study edge and using their resources instead. Exams can be difficult so study a lot and do all of the practice exams.
The teacher was good, just that they had to follow a schedule and teach a certain way. I didn't understand a lot a subjects but was my own fault for not watching the provided lecture assignments which teaches you more information than the in-person lectures. Test are difficult if you don't study well, so learning comes from yourself. Maybe got B+
Dr. Harris is a good professor. Chemistry is a difficult course, and you have to study hard, but it's doable. I wasn't the biggest fan of the flipped classroom, but it wasn't that bad. There were a lot of assignments on Canvas to do, but that was manageable. He drops quite a few grades, and there's an average replace for exams.
Harris was a nice guy but I did not like his style of teaching. Lectures would be posted online for us to watch on our own time. In person, he would quickly go over a few points from the online lecture but most of the time it was just us doing practice problems to put into clicker for some credit.
Harris was very sweet and helpful when it came to questions. Weekly quizzes on Pearsons and Discussion Worksheets, pretty much every other assignment was optional. Flipped classroom was okay, would have preferred he went over harder problems in lectures though. Overall a good class considering the difficulty of the subject. YOU GOT THIS!
Exams are 80 percent of your grade, and designed to be tricky. Use practice exams and all resources. Prof Harris has a flipped learning classroom; do lectures before class, practice problems in class. Great for some, not great for others. Get study edge. Office hours were great, I would definitely recommend going, even if you don't have questions.
Best Professor for Chem 1. Flipped classroom but still partially lectures in class, which is amazing. I also liked rewinding the PLVs. Assigns a fair amount of HW, Achieve did suck though. Exams are heavy but fair, do the practice tests and you will do fine! Chem is hard because it's chem, not cuz of Harris. I would take it with Harris anyday!
Do all the homework and try to understand each. The online lectures are good but I would use chatgpt to understand some concepts that are not really explained. (I didn't use study edge but it helps.) Overall, if you put in the work and understand each lecture video, and attend class you will be fine. No need to read the book.
Honestly he's just a chill guy. There is a homework assignment and quiz with every chapter though Macmillan. There are pre recorded lectures you have to watch prior to class. In class he gives practice problems. If you watch all his lectures and use study edge it won't be too bad. He's the better option out of the other profs (ex: Lopez, sumner)
Very chill and nice professor, but flipped class method is very unorganized and made it difficult for many people to fully comprehend certain topics.
Get studyedge if you want to do well in the class!!! Professor Harris is extremely nice and funny but did not teach the material well and sucked at answering emails. The class is taught through a flipped classroom but the questions in class are often different from those in the lectures. Also, the final was super hard, rest of exams not so much.
A very funny, very kind professor. I enjoyed going to his class, I just could not get good grades on the exams. The homeworks are definitely easier than the exams, so be sure to do all the practice exams. Made class fun, didn't love his online lectures but he usually briefly goes over them again before moving in to practice problems in class.
Dr. Harris did a great job explaining the topics and gave lots of examples on how to solve the problems, and he obviously cared about the students. The class was flipped-learning style, which worked well for me but may not be ideal for everyone. Yes, there were a lot of assignments, to the point of busy work, but they weren't too difficult.
He did not teach in class at all or give enough material to accurately prepare for the tests. Due to the flipped lecture style, he would just go over practice problems in class. However, it was hard to hear him or understand his handwriting in order to actually learn.
Got super sick and let me take a makeup exam I would've totally failed if he wasn't so accommodating he's a fast talker during lectures but his office hours are great. Hard class but chem is just hard he's a good prof
Dr. Harris is a pretty decent professor, but make sure to do ALL extra work, practice makes perfect in chemistry. The tests are okay if you've done (again) EVERYTHING offered. Will answer questions if you need it; Pretty funny at times, and teaches concepts well.
As long as you do all the homework and decent on every exam, you can pass with an A. The flipped lecture style was my favorite. Besides this, Dr. Harris is a wonderful person who wants everyone to understand the content.
Professor Harris lead great lectures. They were funny and engaging. The problem is that they are sometimes hard to follow and they do not do an amazing job at teaching the content. Additionally, there is a fair amount of homework. He is super kind and funny though, even taking walks in plaza with students during break time.
Super nice professor who truly wants you to succeed. Going to office hours helps so much and helps you form a relationship (esp if u want a letter of rec). Exams are so so but they're made by the chem department as a whole not just him same with homework. Only complaint is that he doesn't answer emails, you have to go to office hours if u need him.
His class is structured around video lectures that you complete the day before, and then in class he does practice problems. Do the homework and practice problems, as well as take practice exams and you will do well in this class. He's very good at teaching, and can be very helpful if you are confused on a topic. You won't do well if you don't try.
Enthusiastic about what he teaches, but flipped classroom model meant I had to teach all content to myself, relying more on Youtube than recorded class lectures to the point that going to class felt useless. Does not reply to emails and didn't grade one of my exams until the end of the year. Tests are 80% of your grade, no drop but average/replace
Great professor! The pre-class lectures are more important than the actual in class lectures. While the proffessor understands the material to a great depth, he has trouble communicating it in class, and reading the textbook and watching the pre-class lectures make it so you understand the content to the level they expect on the test.
Definitely recommend Harris over anyone for Chem 1. After our exams he would tell us that his class got higher exam average scores than other professors. Very exam heavy as 4 exams are 80% of ur grade (thats the same for every class). He has office hours if you need extra help, and overall a great guy. It is just on you to comprehend his material.
Harris is a great person but this class was difficult. The class is flipped so lectures are to be watched outside of class and then we would go over 4ish problems in class. His lectures involved review of basic problems from the lesson, but on the exams, the questions would be so much more difficult. Expect to put in lots of work outside class.
Dr. Harris is a great professor. The course is very fast-paced since theres a lot of content to cover, so don't fall behind. Chemistry is a hard class, but Dr. Harris' upbeat personality and jokes genuinely made me excited to go to lecture and office hours. Make sure to practice a lot utilizing textbook questions, worksheets, and practice exams.
Took this a 2nd time, first with Sumner and I def prefer Harris. His classes were more engaging to me, although I stopped going. The main highlight was the new Pearson TB/hw he used this year. It lets you practice on old hws and do a study module per chapter. All HWs were easy bc Pearson gave multiple tries. The TB REALLY helped with the class.
CHM2045 is going to be a hard class regardless of the professor. With Harris I felt he was helpful but near the end of the semester the lectures were not helpful for me. I would definitely suggest investing in Study Edge for this course because of the number of practice problems with video solutions you get.
This is a hard class, but Harris is a great professor. He is funny, engaging, and I loved his style. If you want to succeed: pay attention in class, dont cheat the hw/practice, and DONT FALL BEHIND!!! For exams I would do a chapter each day a week before the exam. PS: I did not use studyedge (i'd wait til after exam 1 to see if you need it)
He is very chill, sometimes too chill. Assignments were straightforward; I believe he is easier than Sumner because he tells us what is going to be on the exams. Overall, a pretty chill dude. I like walking with him. He has an aura.
Professor Harris is a caring and funny Chem 2 teacher. He doesn't use many iClickers, which is nice. The exams can be tough if you don't study, but he explains concepts well and is always willing to help.
I had Professor Harris for both Chem 1 and half of Chem 2 and I can say that he is a great teacher. He's very engaging and he wants to help his students succeed in any way he can. He can be a little unorganized with Canvas, but it's definitely something that can be overcome with a little bit of searching or by using study edge. 100% recommend
Dr Harris was super fun. He made learning material super clear and easy to follow through his online HW lectures the only thing bad I have to say is that his in person lectures can get super off topic at times. Great Guy!
Overall very good professor, but there is a lot of work involved - also if you haven't taken intro to chem, the jump to CHM2045 is rough, but after that its pretty easy
Enthusiastic guy but chem is hard and that's not really his fault. Explains things well but you could skip lectures if you've fully absorbed the prelecture vids and have someone in class to help you w the iClicker assignments in class. Would def want him as my prof again
This class is a flipped classroom, meaning you watch lectures at home and do practice questions in class. If you struggle in an online classroom, this class is not for you. Professor Harris is very engaging and always explains material if you're struggling to understand. The exams aren't difficult to do well on if you study/review properly.
Prof Harris is very nice and engaging in class. Most of the time, the iClickers are only the last few minutes. Attendance is only 1% of your grade, so it doesn't matter much. Lecture videos and homework due before each class. He responds to every email and is very nice and understanding. Office hours are packed, but sometimes helpful.
Professor Harris was a super nice guy. Going to class did not help me, to be honest. I completely attribute my success in this class to StudyEdge. Without StudyEdge, I definitely wouldn't have gotten an A. iClickers were only worth 1% of your overall grade, so I wouldn't be concerned if you miss a couple of classes.
Very nice and personable professor. Class is very difficult to get a good grade in unless you don't take many other credits and spend a ton of time studying. Exams are almost your entire grade and don't entirely reflect material learned in class but there are lots of past-exams and practice materials available.
Nice guy. He doesn't explain things completely, and I think the most effective way of passing this class is just getting Study Edge.
I'm glad I was able to take this class with him! I know the flipped lecture isn't some people's favorite, but I personally appreciated it and found it really helpful to do practice in class. He's always willing to answer questions and I found his lectures to be interesting and helpful. He's very clear about exam expectations and reviews each one!
Dr. Harris is a fun guy. It's a chem class, so obviously prepare to put work in, but he's definitely one of the better professors for chem. I will admit, his lectures do get off topic/repetitive, but he gives so many resources to practice. But most of this class depends on what you do with what you're given. Work hard and you'll be fine.
this review isnt against harris, hes an amazing prof dont get me wrong. for me, the flipped learning style doesnt work. on top of this i hate chemistry, giving me little motivation to do anything. if your in engineering, take chem for engineers instead.
Really nice and engaging professor! He's super funny and cares a lot about his students. The flipped classroom took some getting used to, but it's not that bad. The exams were difficult but if you study for them they're not too bad. iClicker is used for attendance but it's only 1% of the grade. The lectures are online and practice is in person.
Chem 1 is hard no matter who you have, so if you're going to have anyone, have Dr. Harris. Genuinely funny guy and very good at explaining things during the lectures. If you don't want to go, you can easily not attend and just do the iClicker from somewhere else, but theoretically there is mandatory attendance. Nonetheless the best chem prof at UF.
Dr. Harris is very funny and he really cares about his students, always willing to help. This class is very hard, I wouldn't have survived it without Studyedge (GET IT). Exam 2 was the hardest but with the average/replace you can make it, I failed the first 2 exams and still got a B. Prepare to study a lot! It's a hard class but definitely doable.
Professor Harris is definitely the best chemistry professor. Not only does he tend to have the highest test averages out of all of the other chemistry professors, but he also genuinely cares about everyone in his class. My only complaint is that there was a lot of work outside of class, but that is the case for every chem professor.
Funny king. Not the best teacher but I love him so it's worth it
i'd definitely recommend Harris. he's the lesser of all evils that are the uf chem dept but his class is still difficult. he's a great guy and very funny, but not a good lecturer. just get study edge and do the iClicker from home, it's not worth it to go to class. do as many practice problems as you can to prep for exams
Professor Harris uses a flipped-lecture style, so most learning is outside class. Lectures are mostly 4–5 iClickers, but he gets sidetracked easily and explanations aren't always clear. You may leave confused, so I highly recommend using Study Edge to make the material easier to digest.
He is a nice guy but not a great teacher in my opinion. The class is flipped but it is not done well because the practice problems are not only irrelevant to the exam but they are also just not explained or done well. He does not try and control the class at all and my class was talking the entire time and he didn't really do anything about it.
He's very caring and has a ton of aura but he doesn't always explain questions the best. I'd definitely recommend investing in Study Edge and just grinding problems. Exam 3 isn't as easy as people make it out to be and the timing on the final is pretty tight. The class was alright but Harris is definitely the best out of the other chem 1 profs.
Actually did a really good job and I will take him again if possible. This is a flipped class so you have to watch the lectures before class to understand what's going on, but once you get past that then the class is fine if you put in the work. Dr. Harris is engaging and funny and made the class enjoyable.
If you watch the pre-lecture videos and do the assignments you'll be fine. I'll admit some of the Pearson HW isn't relevant to the exams but the PLVs/Pre-lecture assignments definitely are. If you're struggling I'd recommend the Silberburg textbook + looking at past exams (two were posted for each exam)
You can definitely take this class without taking intro to chem or AP chem. Study Edge is clutch especially if you don't have a background in chem. If you put in the hours and take time to understand the material you'll get an A.
