I'm not gonna lie, some of his tests are very hard. However, you can still pull an A or B in this class because he lets you take home your tests and correct answers for half credit. He also curves. You have 8 or 9 tests and you drop your lowest 2 tests on top of that. He's worth taking. He's also a cool guy in general.
Yes some of the tests are hard, but he lets you take your tests home afterwards and correct them for 1/2 credit. Plus he is one funny guy, definately a moral booster and makes everything seem so simple it's child's play.
I learned a lot from his class, he is very kind and humorous. I enjoyed his class and think that anyone who needs a bit of a booster in chem should take his class.
This class was so easy. He was able to teach all the basics of chemistry without any headaches. This was probably one of the easiest classes I have taken. The group quizzes were annoying but they aided in learning the material and they were quite easy. The tests were pretty easy as well and i'm not good at chemistry. He's a generous professor.
Steve is great. I didn't understand something and he took the time to explain it. This is not an easy A. You have to learn the material. Test are too easy.
He is a very good teacher, very straight forward, very clear. You always know what your goals are, always know what to study. If you actually pay attention and do the homework, there is no way to make less than an A! Truly, awesome teacher, now if only I could take him for the more advanced classes...
This has to be the most informative class i have ever taken. I had never taken chemistry before this class and now im a wiz.Harville is the nicest guy and he wants you to do well, the key to this class is to attend the lectures and do the homework, all of it!No way you can leave without an A. I wish all teachers cared as much about their students.
he is extremely easy, helpful, and caring. You don't even have to attend classes as long as you really really study and the textbook, you'll make A's on all of his tests. worth taking!!
Good teacher. I wonder if he gets tired of teaching this course...he skips over useful information sometimes, but always teaches to the exact things you need to know for the tests. Very nice guy, gives very simple explanations of the necessary concepts.
man, for real, its the easiest class but i have learned nothing at all. we do the workbook EVERYDAY. then a test comes around and he lectures 1 day b4 and sometimes its too much for 1 day. kinda stupid, easy A. no preparation for the next class
Awesome teacher. He was always willing to help his students and dumb the material down enough for everybody to understand. He scales and makes chemistry learnable. I would recomend to anyone
Harville doesn't care weather you come to class or not and you are better off not going because you will be teaching yourself this course. Test are easy if you taught yourself the material. He is a bit impatient and acts like he has more important things to do.
He's a great teacher, and pretty funny!! We had a total of 8 tests in the class, but he lets us drop the lowest 2. So I would definitely recommend taking him
Pretty nice but his class is a little difficult if you cant self teach. He was really fast and would go through a whole chapter in less than a week. not much of a review either.
I would recommend harville to anyone. He makes it easy to understand and helps anyone that needs it. He lets you drop your two lowest test scores. He explains the material quickly, but he makes sure that everyone understands. The reviews were great, he brought in the test from previous semester and we reviewed that. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Clearly explains topics and gives real-life examples. When asked, re-does problems w/o being patronizing to students that are having a hard time understanding. Has good sense of humor, keeps the mood light and the topic engaging. It is COLLEGE though, so if you aren't willing to do some self-teaching you should rethink your personal goals.
Dr. Harville is a great professor. He explains the material well, and he makes sure everyone understands the material. He allows you to drop the two lowest test scores (final exam is mandatory). He emails the previous semester's test, and then we review it. Highly recommended!
Awesome teacher. Highly recommended for those who have never taken Chemistry before, or are slow to pick the subject up. He goes over the material throughly and takes the time to make sure all the students understand before moving on. Tests were simple, if you listened and took notes. Would highly recommend him to anyone!
I absolutely loved this teacher. He is very nice and always stops if someone doesn't understand something. He tries to make everthing easy to understand. His test are not very hard. He doesn't care if you attend class but it will definitely help for it is all lecture. The only time you need the book is if you study on your own!
Great teacher!! Very easy to understand. Sometimes makes smart comments, but is a good teacher. Tests are usually 25 questions so a little tougher. I've heard he is the easiest chem teacher.
Easiest CH 105 teacher hands down! The textbook isn't necessary. He makes a lot of small errors while teaching, bu usually gets it right.
I love Dr. Harville he is so funny! The class was not too hard. His test were pretty easy as long as you study. He always reviews for the test
Dr. Harville takes time to work with students to MAKE SURE they have a clear understanding. I didn't buy the book and I was fine. He dropped our lowest test grade AND gave us bonus points. The tests were multiple choice and corresponded very well with what we did in class. It's a lecture class, but he is funny and makes things interesting.
He is a great and hilarious teacher. Highly recommend enrolling in his class.
If you do not know chemistry well, TAKE HARVILLE! I come from a small school where we wasn't really taught chem. Therefore, coming here I was very behind. He explains well and the test are not bad. You get to drop the 2 lowest test scores. Also, he is pretty funny,
This professor is great. I would highly recommend if this your first chemistry class. He is very helpful and easy to understand. He is funny and easy to a question too. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
EASIEST CHEMISTRY CLASS EVER. HIGH SCHOOL CHEM WAS HARDER. TAKE HIM IF YOU NEED CHEMISTRY 105!!!!!!!!!!! JUST PAY ATTENTION AND GO OVER POWERPOINTS. TEST ARE EASY AND STRAIGHT FORWARD. SERIOUSLY...TAKE HIM.
I was so scared to take chemistry because I don't consider myself a "science person" but Dr. Harville was an AMAZING teacher. His lectures are very clear and his expectations are reasonable. If you pay attention in class and review ppts and you won't have to do much studying for the tests. I would highly recommend taking his class.
He's a great professor. If you attend every class, or almost every class, and ask questions when you have them you will make an A in this course. The final in this class is a little tricky, as it comes from somewhere else, he doesn't make it. Really glad I took this course, great refresher.
Love Dr.Harville! Great professor, funny and cares about his students and that they are learning! He will answer whatever question you have.I took him on my second try in chemistry and I did WAY better! He will review before each test and at the end of the semester he told us"if ya notice what i review before the test,is on the test" but still study
Dr. Harville is extremely nice and a great professor! His tests are fairly easy and if you attend class he clarifies the notes wonderfully. I would definitely recommend taking his class whenever you can
Such an easy class! I did not have to put much effort into this class at all and I made an A! As long as you listen and some-what know the material, you will do great!
Easy EASY EASY Class. Def take him instead of McClure
I loved Dr. Harville's class and I hate chemistry. He is such a nice teacher. I took McClure my first semester and had to withdraw because I was failing. I took Harville in the Spring and got a MUCH better grade. As long as you listen to his lectures and pay attention in class you will do great. He gives bonus points, so don't miss class!!
He's a very chill guy. If you need to ask him a question, he'll be there to answer it. Class isn't mandatory, e-mails the powerpoints and quizzes. No final during finals week. Bonus points if you attend that friday class before spring break starts. TAKE HIM.
He was a really easy teacher who made my freshman year a lot less intimidating. There are only 4 tests and 4 quizzes, but they are very easy. No reason you shouldn't make an A.
He is a very easygoing and understanding professor. The course was simple; 4 quizzes and 4 tests (the last test serving as the final). He is helpful and waits for everybody to understand the material before moving on.
Professor Harville is a great teacher. He only gave 4 tests and 4 quizzes the entire semester. He dropped lowest test grade. He will bump up your grade if you are borderline. SI is very helpful! Don't bother buying the book. I only used it 2-3 times the semester for studying on my own.
He's a great teacher. He understands when you are having a hard time and will take every chance he gets to answer questions.
This was my first experience with chemistry, so it might have seemed harder for me. I had to work REALLY hard for a "C". He will give a quiz the day you finish a chapter, so don't miss those days. There were 4 tests and he dropped the lowest grade. There was no opportunity for bonus points. Lab was an easy "A", only wish it combined with lecture.
Harville is very blunt, and that makes him fairly funny. He explains everything in a way that people who are only taking this to fulfill a core requirement will understand. He gave plenty of bonus points, he scaled a test, and dropped the lowest test grade. Many people only show up when an emailed quiz is due or on test day.
Awesome. He plays off the vibe he gets from the class. We're not interested in the topic? Skips the segment. He's funny, great at explaining the material on a projector, & definitely loves his job. I read that he gives pop quizzes..I Didn't have anything but tests in CH105. I would take him again and recommend him to anybody. Drops lowest grade
Mr. Harville is funny and cool. Bottom line study and you should pass with an A. It's just like high school chemistry.
I love Mr. Harville. Although attendance is not mandatory, it would be useful because just looking at the powerpoints won't help you if you don't understand the material. As long as you don't miss your test dates then you're fine. There are only 5 test in this whole semester. He makes things as easy as possible to understand. He's very funny!
Keeps things simple and very understandable. No homework.
I was honestly terrified coming into chemistry as I had a poor chemistry teacher in high school. I knew nothing! However, with Dr. Harville, I never seemed behind. He started from the very basics of chemistry and gave wonderful, clear examples. He always gives a review the class before the test. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I would recommend it.
Very straight forward with information and made sure all students had a chance to ask questions before moving forward to another topic.
Dr. Harville is an excellent teacher! He is very willing to help students, and his lectures are easy to understand.
He gives explanations that helps to better understand the material. Homework was for extra credit, so you don't have to do it if you don't want. Multiple choice tests, easier class than I thought it would be. I would definitely take him again.
I took him for 105. He is a witty guy and is super sarcastic. I would recommend only asking necessary questions out loud in class because he will absolutely roast you. I thoroughly enjoy his class and would recommend him to anyone
Professor Harville is one of the best chemistry professors I have seen. He makes sure he explains everything and always makes sure everyone understands. He makes his class exciting and jokes a little bit. Test are straight to the point.
Professor Harville is a fair teacher, and very approachable. The coursework is not too difficult, and he explains it well. He does offer extra credit, and if you go to the class period before test date, he does a good review of similar material you will see on the test. SI is also available for this corse and the mock exams are very helpful.
I love him! His class is not mandatory, but in order to understand the material and get good notes you have to attend class. The SI sessions helped tremendously too. You do not need the textbook, but I got the text book and worked the practice problems at the back of the chapter before each test and that really helps.
LOL easiest class Ive ever taken- granted I was in AP Chem in high school. Show up to class and take notes (not the end of the world if you miss a few classes). The mock exam is EXACTLY like the TEST so you'd be dumb if you didn't study that. Easy A plus huge extra extra credit opportunity with Mastering chem but you really don't need it. Hes chill
He's real cool. Show up to class. Review SI worksheets and mock tests. They are very helpful. More helpful than his lectures are, but the lectures are good. No need to buy the book. The access code is only used for extra credit so it isn't mandatory. ALWAYS go to the class before the test because he does a review. Good luck!
Harville was very rude to students who didn't understand, didn't care to take the time to explain things no one understood. No homework, just 5 tests & he drops the lowest one. Didn't use the textbook once.
His exams come straight from the lecture and are tricky. HW is optional and worth up to 40pts of extra credit, but you have to complete every assignment.
Reads lectures straight off power points which are posted online. Does not explain anything. I had to go to SI to get simple explanations. IF YOU TAKE THIS COURSE. GO TO SI. He was rude to students who asked questions
If he taught all my classes I'd take him again& again. He obviously loves chemistry& makes the lectures interesting. The tests come from lecture& reading so you need to be present& read. He will sit with you in his office until you understand something. He's a fantastic person& very selfless with his time. He's a gem& UAB is lucky to have him.
Most people really like Dr. Harville, I think he is OK. The class isn't a breeze but it's easy enough. 5 tests and one was dropped, and he offers 40 bonus points, which is a true grade saver.
If he taught all of the chemistry classes I might understand more. He made everything understandable. His mock exams are just like his actual exams which help out a lot.
If you actually listen he is a total smart ass and is absolutely hilarious. Very old school guy. He gives 5 100 point exams and drops the lowest one. Made a 95 and didnt take the last exam. BUY THE EXTRA CREDIT CODE NOT THE TEXTBOOK. TA gives practice exams and works through them day before test. Would take him again in a heartbeat.
He lectures from his power points which are accessable in Canvas. You don't have to buy the book (only used for extra credit homework) or come to class, just be sure you're prepared on test day. He'll definately answer you questions in and outside of class.
Harville is an awesome professor. He REALLY tries to help his students and is really passionate about students asking for help. He slows things down for you until you get it. He gave my class up to 20 bonus points of extra credit for completing the online book code homework. There are 5 tests, in which you drop the lowest.
Harville's class is very fun and he teaches the material very well! He won't put something on the test if he does not get to it in class or feels like he didn't explain it well enough. only 5 tests and the lowest grade is dropped
A fair professor who gives extra credit opportunities and will even drop your lowest test at the end of the semester. His lectures are fairly good but you will struggle if you don't go to them. You can't slack off, if you don't try you won't do well.
I loved Dr. Harville! I had such a hard time with chem in high school, and was worried that college would be the same, but Dr. Harville made everything easy to understand, and I didn't find the class that difficult. Just pay attention, go to class, and put in some effort.
Harville is a good professor. He makes the class fun and light and usually lets us go 20 minutes early. No projects or group work, just do the online homework and study for the test. He has i-clicker questions at the beginning and end of the class to take attendance, so make sure you show up.
He is a great professor. He lectures the entire time, but he makes sure his students get the material and gives a bunch of examples for things that requires more effort to learn and he post his lectures, so make sure you print them out. He does clicker questions before class, at the end of class, or both. Tests are easy, and lowest grade dropped.
I loved taking this professor! He made the information easy to understand and his exams were designed to help you succeed. He drops the lowest exam score out of 5, and if you go to recitation and SI you get extra credit. He really wants everyone to succeed and does everything he can to help the class understand the material.
Dr. Harville doesn't make Chemistry any harder than it needs to be. There are five tests and he drops the lowest test score. Each chapter has online homework but he gives multiple attempts for each homework. Easiest chemistry class I've taken.
Best Chem professor Ive ever had
Very easy if you have taken chemistry in high school. He makes sure he keeps everything simple and does not make you learn anything that is unnecessary. There are 5 exams and only 4 count so you don't even have to take the last one if you are satisfied with your grade.
Posts the notes online. Drops your lowest test at the end of the semester. Definitely recommend going to SI!!!
He's real nice and funny! Easy going. Gives easy clicker questions and no final or midterm. The study guide's on SI are so so helpful. Good teacher! He also drops the lowest test grade at the end!
Dr. Harville made chemistry so much fun to learn! He is hilarious and makes a lecture class super enjoyable. Attendance is not mandatory; however, it will be very difficult to pass without his explanations and examples. He is an amazing professor and I highly recommend him.
I am really bad at math, but if you aren´t this class should be a breeze. Dr. Harville is very fast-paced and hard to follow at times, but he´s a good teacher overall. He tries to make it interesting and only gives the info you will definitely need. No fluff. Be sure to use the SI help courses available, and stay caught up on homework.
Professor Harville is a great guy all around. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you are not in class when he does clicker questions, your grade will suffer. The tests are super easy and straightforward, and the material is overall easier than the regular Chemistry courses. I would definitely take him again.
Super nice and funny. Very easy going. No midterm or final and drops lowest test grade. SI is incredibly helpful and gives a practice test before each test.
Hes funny and explains thing pretty well. If things arent clear feel free to ask a question and hell answer it. To do the best in the class, Id recommend reading the textbook chapter as you go along in the class to help for recitation since thats harder than the class.
In Dr. Harville's class all I did was pay attention in class and that got me pretty far. I only used the book for the practice questions when studying for an exam. If you have to take CH105, take Harville.
He is super nice and very engaging. You take 4 or 5 exams, and he drops the lowest. There is no comprehensive final. Be sure to put the Cengage homework due dates on your calendar because they'll fly by in a hurry if you aren't careful.
Dr. Harville makes learning Chemistry really easy and was super accommodating in regards to the pandemic. There is not a lot of homework involved, and his tests are simply enough (25 multiple choice questions). He knows what he is talking about and is always willing to help students out with the content. There is a textbook but I never used it.
Really good professor. Very understanding. Grades come from homework (not much), tests (easy 25 MC), and recitation. He drops the lowest test grade at the end of the semester.
Professor Harville is the best professor you could hope for. His lectures are like he read the book for you and made the content into the simplest and most easy form it could ever be in. Class is not mandatory but recommended because the professor is really funny and takes the time to make sure everyone understands what he's saying before moving on
Class is not mandatory, but he helps you understand the material. He is really funny. The material is kind of tough, but it is not the hardest class you will take. The test are multiple choice, and I recommend studying for them. The textbook is not really needed. It comes in a bundle with the homework access on OWLv2, so you can use it if need be.
Professor Harville's class is really great. I know many people struggle with chemistry, but he always make things really clear. In my class, we had 5 tests for the year, and he based our grade on the best 4 scores, along with homework and recitation. The homework is usually pretty easy, so you definitely need to do additional studying before tests.
If you are very good at chemistry or have a background in it this class will be great for you. Harville is a very smart man, but he is not a teacher, so people struggling in this subject will most likely have to learn it themselves. His grade consists of 5 tests, but he does drop one at the end of the semester. Nice, funny guy, a little patronizing
Dr. Harville was a pretty good teacher he is very knowledgeable. The class is definitely not an easy A you will have to study, but he drops the lowest test grade. The homework has multiple tries and is a very helpful study tool. The online textbook was the best way of studying, it had lots of practice problems and review.
Very rude whenever you do not understand the material and try to ask a question. His class consists of 5 tests, one homework grade, and the recitation that is paired with this course. He does drop the lowest test grade, but none of them were easy.
I loved Professor Harville. He is down to earth and chill. His lectures are good and he makes sure you understand the material before moving on. The workload is simple: hw, recitation, and test. He drops the lowest test score. One thing I will say is that you will need to come to class if you want an A, unless youre just really good at chem.
I barely passed chemistry in high school but with Harville I made an A. Test are pretty straight forward and homework is super easy and helpful. As long as you go to class, recitation, and do the homework you will atleast get a B.
I would probably like his class better if the subject he taught wasn't so excruciatingly difficult. Not to mention the fact that whenever someone asked a question, he would reply in such a matter of fact manner or sarcastic manner that ended up making fun of the student and encouraging them to not ask questions again. At least he's funny.
Classes are just going over the notes, tests are in class, and the tests cover everything that was covered in class. Professor Harville is very good at helping you understand the material in great detail, and also shortcuts to make certain topics much easier to grasp.
He is a great professor and thoroughly explains the material. The course material is not too difficult, but I would definitely suggest going to his lectures to stay on track. As long as you keep up with the lectures, homework, and recitation, you can do well on the tests.
Mr. Harville will not get to know you one-on-one however he always leaves time to ask questions during his lectures and is more than willing to answer them. He's generally pretty great at explaining difficult topics.
Dr. Harville was a good professor but tended to over explain things. The tests were not bad, and your worst score was dropped at the end of the course. The only thing I'd say was negative was his response to questions. He will likely look at you and respond to you like you're stupid, but I don't think he means to come off as rude.
Dr. Harville was a great professor and answered any and every question asked. He did respond sarcastically to certain students if they asked too many questions. Really study for the tests because they are hard. Come to class every time and actively listen to the lectures.
This was not a great class, Harville was often confusing in the way he taught things. It wasn't too hard, and he drops your lowest exam grade (5 exams overall, 4 scores in your final grade). If you do the homework, attend recitation (part of your grade), and read the book, it isn't super hard to get an A.
Most assignments are homework, the only other grades are 4/5 tests. He drops the lowest test grade. The class can get confusing and requires a lot of studying if you want to grasp the material. Attendance is not required but I suggest you go because the only resource you have is the PowerPoint that was used in class.
Mr. Harville is a good professor who will ensure you understand what he is talking about before he moves on in the lecture. While attendance is not mandatory, he goes over more problems on the test, which can help in the long run. Some chapters are easier than others but he gives good study guides for the tests to help you out.
Harville overall was a good professor. Lectures aren't mandatory but I recommend that you go if you want to pass the class with a decent grade. Exams were not bad if you actually studied the material. Homework was helpful. He gives very sarcastic answers when asked a question about something, but means well & I highly recommend his class for CH105.
Prof Harville was a great professor and made the content of the class very easy. It was really hard to do bad in his class. The tests require studying but not much. There are 5 exams and he lets you drop your lowest exam so after the 4th he told whoever had a good grade in the class to just skip from that point on. He is also very funny.
Harville's CH105 is manageable if you stay engaged. Lectures are worth attending, and the tests are fair if you study the material. unstuck study was a helpful tool for exam prep.
