The Professor was excellent in his teaching and materials. The field trips was a learning lesson and you can use it to built your job search. It's nice to see that a professor who can about his students and have the joy and passion in teaching the class, the on hand was very good. Good luck and keep up the good work.

This is a professor whom I would definitely recommend to others who are film majors or people who are simply curious about the class. He is one who explains things succinctly and takes interest in his students' work and progress. He is definitely a great instructor.

His class is challenging because I had never made any kind of TV project in the past. Just shooting video of family and stuff like that. Learning about scripts and planning a production, editing is all so much fun. Mr. Hirohama has a strange kind of humor. I never know if he's joking or serious though. But the class is good.

He'll break down the basics for you in a way that's no-nonsense, efficient, and cultivates your creativity. Not only does he know the right people, but he has the degree and experience to back it up. Prof. Hirohama's lectures are informative and right on the money. I took classes at SMC, LACC and Long Beach, but they were not anything like this class. The things he says make sense and he inspires to make us create good films. I think I should have taken an editing class first.

Steven Hirohama is a pretty cool teacher. Great sense of humor and really pushes your artistics skills to the limit, especially for serious artist. Hirohama is quite different from the rest of the art teachers; he is actually intrested in giving you an inside look on the entertainment and artists industry through field trips.

I've learned alots experience in animation through him. His classes are the movies, individual works and field trip. A great teacher I have known.I'll look forward his classes next time

Storyboarding and comic illustration class is lots of fun and I have learned a lot.

It would be helpful if all the equipment was functioning mainly had problems in the library screening room. Other than that I really enjoyed the class and I love the hands on methods taught by Professor Hirohama. I plan to take more classes with Professor Hirohama.

Sometimes I don't like coming to class because he always asks if we have questions and when no one says anything, then he asks us questions to see if we got what he's been teaching to us. Prof. H challenges me to be better. He is right about the time management issues on working on projects.

I put his class as hard but it's due to the fact that it's all about how much pressure you put on yourself. This is definitely not a class to be taken lightly or used as an "easy A". You will work, and it does require a lot of hours outside of the classroom. With that said, it was one of the most eye opening experiences on how to make films.

Finally got me from my 'amateur filmmaker' stage to the 'independent filmmaker' stage. It is a simple class of getting projects thrown at us, and we either sink or swim (with some assistance). Whoever hasn't taken his class, make sure you take editing and some Theatre history class prior, it helps you survive.

My teacher can be a little strict but he is always right and he does an amazing job on teaching us the basics of making a movie and even the editing..

Cinematography is my life! Hirohama teaches it but he likes to make us do scenes and excersices that I don't like plus he makes us use cameras which are too complicated like the 24p cmaeras.

In case your wondering he's hot in a Takashi Miike kind of way. As far as the courses go it is up to you as the student to make the most of it. If your not serious or motivated about film then don't take the courses because you won't do well. Alot of free time is given but that doesn't mean you should procrastinate.

Hirohama...if anyone is planning to major in the film category, Steve Hirohama is your man to lead you to the top...very helpful, he knows his stuff from top to bottom and can answer every question you ask about how to edit, film, etc.

I would of liked for him to take a bit more control at times, but in all honesty, I think that is what makes him a successful instructor. Great class. I will take him again for sure!

TH293 Class attendance is very crucial if you do not have a Mac with the Final Cut. Majority of learning comes from the textbook. Not recommended for people who need the teacher to push them to get their work done.

Mr. Hirohama can help you become an effective writer and director if you let him. If you don't care about the class neither does he. I really enjoyed his class and I would love to take him again in the future.

He was a great teacher. Some assignments were easy, but sometimes you had to use your head. He's also a great guy to talk to, and he's hilarious. Very VERY helpful. helps you put YOUR ideas on the screen. He doesn't fit anybody in a box, he lets you make movies about what YOU want to make movies about. I don't think he has ever said no to a student's idea, only told them what they will have to do (which is sometimes a lot) only because of what is being asked, not because he doesn't like it

Good class, learned a lot about film making. The teacher has a loose schedule (It could be just his summer classes though). So, if you want to have a structured everyday lecture this class is not for you. Questions arrive from the process of making a film which, he helps and answers along the way.

Hirohama is super helpful , he's the right professor to choose if you want to be a filmmaker, director or anything in the film industry feild. There are no lectures in the class but he does give you a lot of advice.

In cinematography, you learn how to set camera's manually to control exposure, focus and other aspects to manipulate the image on camera rather than just relying on auto settings (which only gives you ok picture). You also get to learn how to film 16mm which is always a trip. I highly recommend this class and this professor.

Really helpful and fun teacher. Learned so much. So many cameras to use and learn from like canon 5ds and many HD cameras. Also get to shoot in film. Hirohama also gets many field trips and industry people to come in and speak with the class. Take this class if your intersted in the film industry and film making.

Professor Hirohama is one of the best teachers Cerritos has to offer based on his teaching style. He gives you the tools necessary to succeed and pushes you to become great. In Cinematography I learned how to shoot film, 3 point lighting, to network and even got to meet industry professionals who taught me the ins and outs of the business.

The cinematography class isn't as easy as any other class, but you do learn a lot more .Things the class focuses on is lighting, the use of film shooting in 24p and then filming a couple of scenes You should take this class after motion picture production and before advanced motion production. You have to pay for your own film for this class.

I came into this class completely intimidated and without a clue how to use Final Cut Pro, but Professor Hirohama is an awesome teacher and through showing us films and teaching us how to use Final Cut I've learned so much! Editing has now become a passion of mine and I see film/TV in a totally different way! Take this class- you won't regret it!

Mr. Hirohama was by far the best professor for this course. He never failed to help, answer a question, or criticize constructively. I would take any class of his in a heart beat... I learned quiet a bit and even won the 5th annual Horror Film Competition at Cerritos College under his instruction. Thank you again Mr. Hirohama!

I didn't learn much using Motion and Sound Track Pro but it's because I don't have the program at home. Class format will change so it will be better. He also teaches things such as cutting rhythms and pacing the story rather than blasting it with effects which I think is more valuable.

Fun class. Left having a fine understanding of story boarding so... yeah, that was the point. Students will watch a bunch of films they most likely haven't seen before.

One of the most fair and enriching courses I've taken this semester. Learning Final Cut Pro is key to many facets of multimedia work. The success of this course relies on personal discipline and focus and to ask plenty of questions. The aesthetic of motion picture editing is definitely taught here.

I have taken this class more than once, not because I have failed it but simply because it is a very fun and entertaining class. I hope to one day be a successful cinematographer and getting the chance to work with other student filmmakers and having a professor that is really involved in my education is great

He's very real with you. Makes extra efforts to teach a lot more than what is required. And he will surprise you and make you laugh. Its all on your interest if you want to make this class fun. You won't survive if you're shy.

Pretty good teacher overall, He can be a pain in the butt. But he explains things in other ways if you don't understand it the first time. Theirs extra credit possible and the assignments are simple. Do the work show up and he will have you editing your film in no time.

Storyboard is no easy thing, yet he helps you through it not by guiding, but by leading you to the right answers. Sometimes his lessons don't make first in the beginning, but he does a great job of answering an unresolved questions... even if 10 people just asked the same thing.

comprehensive teacher. pretty clear on his work; creates perfect assignments that blend well with the lessons. works well with extra credit. he brings up many examples of previous student work, and sometimes student conduct; this is ok i guess, but there are points where it may be considered "slurring". overall, i recommend this teacher:)

He is insane! He doesn't look crazy, but all the things he says and makes us do comes from his kinda out there way of looking at things. He embarrasses everyone and makes fun of himself too. Oh, but I love this class.

It's amazing how much more I see from watching the movies in terms of shots and angles, and the concepts he's taught us like intercutting. I've my major after this class to animation (was design). The assignments are actually easy if you pay attention in class and come to class.

I love the editing class. He makes it less technical. After taking this class, I decided to buy a Mac and FCP.

I should have bought the books, but I didnt so I cant do the Talonet assignments. Its a fun class and you can learn lot if you do the reading. I wish we could watch more movies thouh.

He's cool. He's made me aware of the kinds of things that films are made of from storyboards. Only thing I don't care for is trying to read the subtitles of the films.

Professor Hirohama has to be one of the most funniest teachers i've ever had. Very easy, even though I slacked off a little in class, I still learned a lot from him. All you have to do is follow the instructions he gives, show up to class, and do the work. Great teacher, I would take the next film class but can't do to crowded units. Swag him out.

Professor Hirohama is like a mentor to me, he is very helpful and he definitely knows his stuff. He is an honest guy and I think that's why I appreciate him a lot. Because he won't sugar coat things. If he see's a flaw, he'll flat out tell you and correct you in order for you to improve. If your serious about film making, take him! He is the best.

A great teacher, the class almost acts like a club meeting as students joke with Prof. Hirohama and generally have a good time while getting work done.

An overall good instructer to learn by, although be sure to be clear when you ask questions becasue he has a tendency to joke around a lot. If you want to learn more about animation and/or storyboarding then this is the guy to see.

This is the coolest class.... because we shoot a lot of film and are learning things like shutter speeds and f-stops. Didn't know how much the prof. knows about photography until I took this class.

Overall a nice instructor. He teaches you the most basic ways to do complex storyboards. He's going to show you lots of films, but he's going to use them for your homework. All of them are relevant to the class even if they don't seem to at first. Be warned though, he jokes around a lot, and you want to be specific with your questions to avoid this

Professor does joke around, but to be fair it's to make sure you're paying attention. the films and lessons really help you develop story telling skills. to be honest I was discouraged at first to draw storyboards bc I can't draw very well, it wasn't until the end of the semester that I actually realized how much this class really inspired me.

Great film instructor as always. If you take the cinematography class you will get to learn how to shoot 16mm footage and you get to learn the basics of camera angles and lighting. Lighting plays a big role in your finished product of your film. Pay attention and don't slack off. Don't put off doing your scene deconstruction last minute.

Mr. Hirohama is a nice, cool and understanding teacher. This was my very first film class and throughout the course I felt fortunate to receive the hands on experience with my classmates, receive feedback from Mr.Hirohama and use the equipment that I was unfamilar with.

Took his FILM101 class and ART114. he's a funny guy if you have a sense of humor and jokes around a lot. you do learn a lot about storyboarding and animation using Anime Studio Pro. he's fairly easy if you put in the effort. he grades on your effort instead of the quality so don't be discouraged if you can't draw.

One of the greatest professors at cerritos.I passed film 101&used iMovie for my project but for102 I couldnt import & had to use Final Cut Pro I thought i was going to be lost figuring out a new software but he was very helpful in addition to showing us on the projector he took his time to help one on one so that i knew how to edit.&hes funny

Great teacher, and great experience working with him. Film 299 is an advanced directed studies class I felt prepared to take on the tasks thanks to his teachings. Its a lot of work, but if you care about the subject you will care to do the work.

Very in depth with topics. Has a bit of a honest and blunt personality. Can curse at times, but is not vulgar or crass.

You get what you sign up for. Prof Hirohama gives plenty of drawing assignments, so you get a lot of practice. Even if you're not the best artist, he grades you on consistency and effort. By the end of the semester, you'll see how much you've improved.

Since I'm a international student, there were some parts that I didn't understand but he helped me a lot until I understand. and film 101 was Hybrid class. when you don't have class, you have to do your online assignments. If you miss the assignments, you'll be absent. The class was hard but I'm sure you'll get a great experience about film!

I started the film program this year and took 2 classes with Prof. Hirohama. He's a great teacher, answers your questions and helps as much as he can in class. He's very good at corresponding via email. Do homework, come to class and participate. 104 will give you appreciation for aspects of film you never thought of before, I highly recommend it!

I have taken more then one class with Proffesor Hirohama. He has a lot of knowledge of the Film industry and If you have any questions he is willing to put his time to teach you. Participation is essential for his class which is easy. Try to participate on any project that the class may have it will be helpful.

This is a hybrid class and wished to have more class meetings to pick his brain. If you truly are interested in Film, you will put in the effort and time. Never made a film before. Now I know how much work goes in to making films. Good books and lectures and hands on class exercises using cool equipment.

Great class if you are a technical Person since it's all about equipment and Learning to use them. I'm not and had a hard time managing my projects in finishing them.

After taking this class, I know now that I have so much to learn about cinematography. Prof. H is very good and tells it like it is. Definitely not a class for lazy and unmotivated types.

The class itself was pretty fun and informative, but you get the best advice when talking to him one on one.

Professor HIrohama is a cool guy, he is very helpful and extremely funny. He taught me how to edit footage on Final Cut X by example. Although the class was only a 6-week long course over the summer, I learned very quickly an important and vital skill.

Outstanding professsor, great mentor and inspirational to those who are serious about becoming filmmakers. Would love to take again. Jes!!!! Culture icon!!!

Took this class to learn a little about editing now I'm going to be taking more film classes

Taking this class because I'm taking the Apple FCP X exam. Prof. Hirohama is clear on objectives and is like a drill sergeant in repeated questioning of the skills needed. Most students who don't pay attention to his demos or read his lessons probably don't do well.

Mr. Hirohama is an attentive professor who gives time and patience to his students. He has a sense of humor which is great for a professor and he isn't shy with his advice, offering insight and ideas.

Professor Hirohama has a lot of knowledge to share about the industry, you just have to want it. Participation is important. There are group projects; don't waste your time or your classmates time if you are not willing put in the effort and time. Professor Hirohama has industry guests visit the class and offers field trips to enhance skills.

Classes with Hirohama are not meant to be easy A's. He pushes you to try something new. He teaches you the techniques you'll need and then gives projects to push you to really learn and understand those techniques. If you want to work in the industry, he will help prepare you and may offer you ways to work that could further your career. Great guy.

TV Production takes everyone on the team to make a great film. If you don't like working in teams, just drop the class to let someone else who wants it more than you have the chance to be in the class. You have to get together with your team a lot, so prepare to set a few hours aside for each project. It's a really fun class and great professor!

Cool class about lighting and camera work. Great professor who brings in awesome guests - film/tv industry people and former students working in film. Would like to take the class. If you're lazy - don't take this class.

Taking directed studies challenged my knowledge, skills and adaption; working constantly and progressively to achieve every phase of the process; from pre-, pro- & post-production. Best part about working on a project is that Mr. Hirohama helps guide you, achieving your goal. If you want a true insight in the film bizz, this is it! Worth it!

I have taken Prof. Hirohama for all of the film classes he offers at Cerritos and it has always been very interesting and informative. He recently gave me the opportunity to be cinematographer for a project which gave me my first IMDB credit. I recommend him to anyone interested in film and I also recommend you put in the work in class.

I took this beginning film class because I want to work in the entertainment field. Maybe as a writer. It's a production class and I realize how much work is involved even in doing even a short 3 minute movie. Signed up for Prof. Hirohama's Cinematography summer class and we just had our first class yesterday. Enjoying it so far. Fun class.

An amazing inspiring individual. He gives great advise and will guide you if you need any help. If you show interest in the subject he will begin to email you about many opportunities about internships or field trips to see how the industry works. Classes are all hands on and you will not be disappointed. He also has a great sense of humor.

It's only been the first week in the Advanced Production class and the professor has shown us amazing things like posting casting breakdowns and breaking down a script. Learned more about writing from him than in the screenwriting class I took. Can't wait to see what else will be covered in the renaming 5 weeks.

Professor's 101 class was hybrid so we had half the meetings of a regular class. which was OK to me since we had time to work on the reading and written assignments. I'm taking his summer Cinematography class and it's 100% hands on and I'm learning all kinds of cool technical info and things about equipment.

If you have a passion for film, then Directed Studies is for you. Its what I like to call "good stress." I directed a film and was able to receive IMDB credit(which is a BIG DEAL). Got to meet/work with a lot of different people and learn about the BUSINESS side of film. In the end, its an extremely rewarding class. Prof gives GREAT advice as well.

Hirohama is a great professor. He is sarcastic and sometimes harsh but he is realistic. He always has life lessons ready and weird crazy stories to tell. I would recommend this class if you actually want to learn something in life. He makes learning fun. I worked hard to get an A, but the class really isn't that hard.

He inspired me to continue in film since he knows what he's talking about and pushes you to go farther than you thought you could. This was the most interesting film class I have taken. The professor has a uniques way of teaching... Sort of like teaching by not teaching and making you discover things on your own. He doesn't answer questions but asks questions back until you realize you sort of already knew the answer. Got to take his classes!

He is a great professor, and makes the class very interesting and fun, he makes class more as a family type which makes students more Comfortable and enjoyable.

Very sarcastic in a good way, always helps and answers questions when asked. Gives honest feedback even if others take it the wrong way, not to put anyone down but to help them grow a tougher skin and accept constructive criticism in the real world. Very strict with homework assignments, but its to get others to get in mentality to get things done.

He will tell you what you've done wrong. This professor will be there when you have any questions and will answer truthfully. You will never be excluded unless you don't participate yourself. The course is very hands-on.

The Film 107 class was an interesting class as we studied a specific editing program in preparation for its certification, that being, Final Cut Pro X 10.2. Took this class to learn editing. Found out how much more there is in learning FinalCut. The exams were difficult and there's no way I would have passed the certification exam. Mr H gave us a project as the final to shoot and edit and that was the best part. What I learned is amazing. Going to change my major to Film.

Really fun class.

The professor covered storyboarding and animation principles in this course. The drawing that he made us do from scripts has helped me visualize better. Had so much fun with the anime software. Wished there was more time to do more animations.

Having now taken the production class over the summer, I can say that the work it does require (since it's packed into five weeks) was well worth it. Prof. Hirohama has been immensely helpful in so many ways and will allow you to make mistakes in order to learn from them and be better.

Took this course because I always wanted to know how to make better videos. In the short time we had I learned a lot about filmmaking, not video as Prof H would say. Hes kinda blunt when he critiques but always right and shows what he means. Taking Editing abd Cinematography from him.

Professor Hirohama's courses, specifically 104 have been very beneficial to me, and I've learned and improved as a film student. He's not afraid to be blunt and provides informative and useful feedback. He's also helped me gain opportunities and experience by doing film jobs from school grants.

Took the editing class during summer and I learned a lot. Final Cut Pro using the Apple book. The professor knows a lot about the software and he allowed us to do filming for the final project to put use the editing skills we learned. Editing is very heard but he made it easy to understand.

Amazing heart and soul. I have known Steven for over 25 years and I see he truly cares for his students. He knows what is happening in Hollywood and what needs to be done. I have great admiration. And even though I was a guest speaker, I learned today from him as well. He knows what he is teaching. Listen to him.

Professor Hirohama has years of experiences so pay attention to what he has to say. You will only get out what you put in. When he has industry meet and greets, make sure you go and talk to as many people as possible. I met a director there and now Im a full time editor for a medical show on Amazon Prime. You never know what will happen.

This advanced production class was stressful for me because I had to do a lot of preproduction work in order to finish the projects on time. But I learned a lot from my classmates as we all worked on the same script for the first projects.

Had him for many film classes & he's one of the best. Makes the material fun/understandable but will also sarcastically critique things you need to improve on in a funny/mean way. You get out what you put into the classes. He's worked tirelessly to make sure all his film kids have knowledge, resources, and equipment to make it in the biz. Thx PH.

Hirohama is a great professor. He provides a lot of hand on experience in the class and gives/send out information to help his students improve their skills. He also sends out emails for possible internship. I learned a lot in his class and I recommend him to anyone who is interested to learn about film or majoring it.

He has expectations of you and will make you work for it so dont think this is a bird course. He encourages students to seek outside opportunities like festivals and expos. He is very passionate about his students learning and allows their creativity to flow. This course was the culmination of everything I learned. Take it and you'll learn a lot.

Professor Hirohama is one of many teachers that I quite enjoyed being in class with, even though he may talk a lot, he gives very good feedback on how to improve your homework/project. His grading relies very heavily on attendance and the final projects. I had a lot of fun with the teacher and participating with other students in this class.

Course took: FILM 103 Perfect if you're serious about producing/directing. Course pushes you to do both and get better at it with each assignment. Not to be taken as an "easy elective" class. You will have to do the work to pass. Offers extra credit if you do slack in some areas but definitely take it to do the work and learn. Great professor !

FILM 256 is far one of the best courses Ive taken at Cerritos college. Ive learned many new techniques and also have learned ways to improve my skills. This course is about Reality TV and a Documentarys professor Steven Hirohama Keeps it real and 100% when it comes to projects. Definitely something that is need in this industry.

This is a professor who makes you work for your grade, which is the whole point of being in school right? His class prepares students for the real world. The film industry is the toughest business to get into, so I would expect a class that would help prepare and challenge me in the best way. Highly recommend Prof. H to any serious film student.

He is extremely knowledgeable and experienced within the film-making industry and he has many resources and contacts that will help make the class be rewarding for anyone new to film-making or anyone looking to fine tune their skills.

This semester was all online but it still had the same level of interaction through the projects that I had to participate in. The professor even opened up opportunities for students to participate in seminars with people who are actually involved and are working in the film production industry. From these seminars we were given useful advice.

My experience with FILM 101 was whatever tbh. Throughout the fall semester, I kinda felt discouraged because of the pandemic and we weren't able to use a 16mm or digital film. However, I did appreciate the professor's efforts as he was able to organize module assignments and point out essential aspects of filmmaking.

The class is paced well with special guests from the industry throughout the semester. I highly recommend Hirohama because he not only teaches you the skills you need to pass the class, he gives good advice for those looking to work in this field.

I've taken Prof. Hirohama for several classes, and in each class he has shown a respect for his students, has given quality advice and help, has aided his students in finding internships and gigs to further their experience, and does it all with a sense of humor. I dropped the class because I was not prepared and COVID hit. He's my favorite prof.

Hirohama was the push that I wasnt used to. I mean that in best way possible. He pushed me to work harder and critiqued things on projects that other teachers would just laude. There was never a sense of dissatisfaction, more that whatever that was done could be honed and refined to be the best product it could be. I left his class motivated

The greatest professor I have ever had in all my years of being in school. He is very kind, will help if you need it, and gives AMAZING feedback. Will actually help you get an internship so that you can gain experience in the field which is very much needed for the film industry. This class was really amazing its a great opportunity to really learn about the industry. This professor gives really good feedback and things that you need to improve on. He also hosts zoom meetings with people that actually work in the industry where you get to ask questions to gain more information I would definitely recommend taking his class.

I shot on 16mm, filmed an event in Palm Springs and met Richard Edlund at the ASC Clubhouse. I attended the Final Cut Pro Summit in Los Angeles where I learned tons about the software and was able to submit a short film that won an award. The opportunities in this class are well worth the work to put in. The decision is yours to take them or not.

The actual class is pretty straightforward, and the main project is the bulk of the work. I'd recommend focusing on the big project, working with classmates on it, and following his recommended timeline.

Took this class (Storyboarding and Animation Principles) during summer which is a 6-week session, so there were lots of work. All of the assignments and projects were clear. Prof. H is an industry person and knows about story, animation and filmmaking. I changed my major to Film because of his class. Taking more classes in the Fall.

An important aspect that he teaches is the language of filmmaking, such as composition, framing of a shot, etc. All around a great professor.
