He explains things clearly and fully. He has fun and enjoys the subject and it makes class that much more enjoyable and condusive to learning. Plus, he's pretty funny in an over grown frat-boy sort of way.

Easy class to take. Have to read the book and take complete notes in order to pass exams. Leaves a lot of room for extra credit. Off-topic stories do take up class time, but you might learn something new in the process. Recommended.

HILARIOUS guy. Real energetic, makes history fun, because he incorporate hilarious stories into them. Everyone says this class is so hard, but it's not. I missed a couple assignments, did average on the tests and passed. You have to do a research essay at the end..be prepared for that.

Holmes is a pretty loud and crude guy but it's all in good fun. I received a B in the class and my grade really reflected the time I put into the class. I probably put a maximum of 8-10 study hours into it total and missed class several times. I never even used the book that compliments the class. Recommended.

Holmes is a good teacher. His class is as difficult as any AVERAGE college level class. A lot of people say it's hard but it's not. Your grade will not however come out of the wash higher than you've worked like some other classes at BC that lob the grades in the lesser students favor.

Enjoyed his lectures, although he comes off strong and somewhat rude, he does it all in fun. Although he scared me at first, I learned to like him the most out of all my teachers. Wish he taught some kind of history class as well. The book he wrote that goes along with the lecture notes is very helpfull.Recommend him!

Tests can be difficult, but if you do good on the research paper you'll be able to pass. Very good structure and opportunities for extra credit. Teacher is very approachable and is clear as to what is expected.

He tells funny stories like when he went in front of the judge and was overly enthusiastic; the judge told him to pip down because it was his court room. Hes like a father figure who lets you know your on a learning curve, and tries to give you a heads up on what to expect.

Fun class, he is very energetic, and really enjoys this subject. He is very funny. However, don't underestimate the work he requires. His exams are extreamly comprehensive! I learned a lot, but I worked very hard for a B.

Oh my goodness! I LOVE MR. HOLMES! He had me laughing the enitre time. I don't know hos he does it, but he just is an amazing teacher, and so lively! HE is very knowledgeable and he fits right into the conservative Bakersfield, which is rare for a poli sci teacher.

Had him for political science, does not really go into current events (which is what i wanted), but puts his notes up on the board and makes it very easy to understand. Gives you the essay questions for the test before hand, would recommend him (he says the F word). He also lets the top two grades skip the final but won't tell you until then.

He's a nice guy, and he makes all that political mumbo jumbo easy to understand through examples and analogies. His class is fun and energetic, but you do have to study, study, study!! Essay questions for all exams are given 1st day of class and all scantron ?'s will be in YOUR NOTES!!!!

Holmes is the best professor i've had at B.C. so far. He balances his lectures from serious lectures on the subject to the most hilarious stories and analogies i have ever heard. He is extremly hard. Be prepared to do a lot of studing. His tests are essay and multi choice. You must memorize the essays (which are 30point outlines) to pass the class. He takes pride in people failing so be ready when you walk in to work really hard. Do not take hard classes when you take him.

I took this class because it was a requirement for transfer. Holmes is a funny dude, his lectures can be boring but he usually livens them up with a funny story. You'll actually have to study pretty hard for your tests. If you don't get A's(93 points at least) on all the tests you can forget about getting an A in the course. Overall, decent.

With the ITV all you need to do is read the chapters, kind of watch the video, but makes sure you know all the answers to the essay question and your good. He give you the essay question for all the test at the beginning of the semester so it just ocmes down to doing the work.

Prof. Holmes surprised me. I just finished the 4 week condensed POL SCI 1 ITV class which uses both a textbook and a video lecture series. Holmes held a review every week before a test and was incredibly helpful to the class. He loves to teach and it shows. He is a good professor and even though his office hours are not stable, when you can get a hold of him he will give you his undivided attention. As for the essays, you have to write what he wants to hear, not what you necessarily believe to be the truth. He is a "progressive" so gear your essays towards that political mindset.

For the tests just write out your essay questions and study them as well as your notes and you will do fine. You don't really need the book just get the supplement. He is a great teacher. He nearly gives us the answers of the essay portion of the exam. Compare to other professors from CSUB, he is easy. All you have to do is study and not mess around.

he's a hard teacher at BC, and an easy one at CSUB, the only difference is the students' efforts. if you CAN'T get a B with him, you're probably not trying. he warns you on the first day about his teaching methods, and he doesn't disappoint.

Class is only as hard as you make it. Just show up for class and take notes, don't buy the book. Research paper involved in this class but not in B1. You take 3 tests which are based off the notes and there is an essay on every test. Not the type of class if you want to do nothing and get by.

I have had Holmes twice now, both for American Gov and for California Gov. Class is only as hard as you make it and if you study the notes you will do fine. I am sick and tired of people saying his calss is to hard, come on its college. You will have fun in his class but you have to work to get a good grade.

Easy class. You do not need the book, but attendance is mandatory. Do the extra credit, complete the municipal report as early as possible, study your notes to the lecture outlines, and there's no chance of failing unless you are incredibly dull. I love Mr. Holmes! Quite funny.

Holmes is the best poli sci professor! He doesn't take roll and the notes are in the supplemental guide, so you can miss virtually any day but the tests. Tests are moderately difficult. 1 assignment, 3 exams, and a final. Very funny. Don't take his class if you can't laugh at yourself. If you took AP gov, you could skip everyday and pass still.

he is the best professor at BC. He still rocks an 80s mullet, and half ways in the semester he trims it down which makes him look like Justin Bieber. I really recommend him. I had him for pols b12 and b16 both classes were easy. lectures are good and easy. attendance is not mandatory just don't miss class a lot and you'll pass the class.

If you show up everyday, listen, write down what he emphasizes as important, review all your notes for an hour or two at the end of every week, and study about half an hour before every quiz, there should be absolutely no reason you can't at least get a B+. I loved Holmes, especially since I am a political science major. Beware, a lot of the information that helped me pass the class, I had already received from We the People training in high school. Show up to class everyday and take GOOD notes. Information in the Amer. Gov book will help, but the supplemental is essential to having a good grade.

Holmes is one of the funniest professors. To be honest he does take a lot of time telling stories but you won't mind. Loved this class so much. He has two books and the workbook is needed most times because he can forget his flash drive with the presentation but its in his workbook and the other book isn't necessary unless you take bad notes.

You're graded on 4 tests and a paper. One of the tests is the final, he's funny and very clear in his expectations for the class. My advice would be to always go to class (even though he doesn't take attendance) and take notes because the tests ?'s come from the lecture. Study for the essay questions as well and you'll be solid. Paper is easy too.

Not just a pretty face. I went into this class thinking he was just another funny prof, but he actually knows his stuff and gives good feedback on papers. Fairly easy class if you know what you're doing. Interesting, too. Each week there are presentations on two sides of a political topic (immigration, abortion, healthcare, etc.). Take notes!

Holmes is soo great. I looked him up on here and it was the best choice I've made so far. He's super hilarious and such a smart ass and he teaches in a way that anyone can understand. I never missed a class by choice because he always has something funny to say. Even my friend comes and sits in on the class. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Professor Holmes is a great professor. Attend every class, takes good notes, and prepare yourself for the exams from day one and you should pass the class. I learned a ton from him and the lecture's are funny, so the time goes by fast.

In the beginning of the semester, he provides us with outlines for lectures which makes it easy to study for tests. Make sure you study for your tests and your essay questions since they are a big part of your grade. If you do these things you should be fine!

Professor Holmes is by the best teacher.I took this class for GE credit and he really broke it down. Guy knows his stuff make sure to take good notes and you will pass ! all you have to do is STUDY STUDY STUDY! Only three exams with an essay which he gives you so you have plenty of time to memorize it before hand ! He's hilarious too!

His classes were cool but what makes it a deal breaker is how he only grades 3 exams and a report so mess up on one and you failing. Wont take again. He really cool but not his strategies.

Professor Holmes is really funny & will offend everyone, so if you can't handle jokes I don't reccomend to take him. His exams are 90% based on his lectures so I suggest not missing class. He only grades 4 tests and 2 reports (1 report is extra credit). He gets sidetracked a lot so time runs out. (Test 3 becomes the final). Highly recommend him.

Holmes is awesome. Class is not easy, lots of info and you're expected to know it. Essay question is 50% of every test/final-must study for these! Only used textbook to study for tests. Holmes knows his stuff and is funny as heck. If you're looking for an easy A, this is not the class. Holmes will challenge you but the class is great!

He is very funny so he will keep you entertained. There is a report,three exams, and a final. NO HOMEWORK. Test consist of 50 multiple choice and essay. Essay questions are given in advance, so do not rush it all up a day before the exam. Book is not really needed as long you attend class, but it can really provide additional help. Good Luck.

he's literally the funniest teacher ever. He tell's you what to write and what to study yet you just have to put in the work to memorize it but it's not that hard. He'll give you an easy extra credit assignment that will give you a whole grade bump. I say just do it

A great professor, reallly chill and inspiring. Tests are 2 essays based off the readings you get for each topic. New topic every week. Students present at the beginning of the week and a lecture at the end of the week. Each student chooses 1 topic to present on. One presentation, 1 research paper, 1 municipal report, a midterm and a final.

Very funny man. However, only 4 assignments given, 3 tests and a paper on a city council meeting. This is not a class where you can miss a test and still pass. Also if you are a very sensitive person DO NOT TAKE. He gives out a study guide with the essay questions on it and some of the answers on the essay appear on multiple choice.

Holmes is an extremely outgoing guy. If you can not take a joke or be made fun of this class definitely isn't for you. The course itself is somewhat hard because you are only taking 4 test for your entire grade in the class. If you have a decent understanding of government and pay attention you will pass easily. I personally never used the book.

Best professor I have ever taken. I don't care who says what about anyone else, I love this professor to the point he deserves a shrine in my room. Walked into this class dreading it, and now want to major in political science. He's heavy on lectures, but the lectures are great. If you don't like sarcasm and awesome teaching, I wouldn't recommend.

He says you need the textbook, but he grades mostly based on his lectures. He gave a pop quiz the first week and almost everyone failed, but it wasn't graded. Grades are based on tests and a short paper about a political meeting you attend (of your choice). You can write another paper for extra credit. His lectures may be the best I've ever heard.

His lectures are really entertaining and can get off topic but somehow relates it back to the lecture. Tests are always from the notes. Do not bother buying the textbook you dont use it. I took this class online due to COVID-19. There's lots of powerpoint presentations to watch, but it's better than reading the textbook. Don't buy it. It's totally not necessary. The powerpoints go into good detail. Take good notes and you will do good on the tests. Grades consist of 3 midterms, 1 municipal report, 1 final. Extra credit available.

Professor Holmes' online class was easy. The tests are based on the lectures so you definitely need to attend and pay attention to those. He's also good about helping you with accidents that happen online. I goofed using Canvas to submit an assignment and he reset the issue for me. He makes funny remarks in his lectures which help out with dullness

Professor Holmes is very straight forward with his grading and class. Doesn't assign homework so your grade will be 100% dependent on the midterms/essays/final. All the test material can be found in his lecture. Overall, he is a solid choice.

Great professor, I think the post below are spam post based on someone that had a bad experience. Holmes is funny and if you pay attention and actually study the material you will pass. The essays arent bad for the midterms if you write them out a couple times. Test arent hard either considering he tells you exactly what to write during lectures.

Professor Holmes is a great teacher overall. I took POLS B1 over the summer semester and it wasn't very difficult. It's very important to pay attention to the lectures and take notes because the tests are mostly on those. There are a quite a few essays but they aren't super hard.

What this class essentially boils down to is the midterms, which happens to be the only things you're graded on besides the final. The essays are rather easy if you happen to be able to take what notes you can from his pre-recorded zoom lectures, but if you make use of the zoom transcript then the essays get much lighter in difficulty.

He was a great Professor. I thought this class was going to be boring but he explains and interacts with class making it a bit more interesting. YOU have to go to lecture to pass but other than that if you actually try you will pass.

Prof. Holmes is AMAZING! His lectures are structured and he gives lots of examples, be ready to write EVERYTHING down. He doesn't require a textbook but suggests we read it at home. His exams are based on his lectures and consist of essays & MCQ except for the final. There is a lot to memorize, be sure to listen attentively. DO extra cred as well.

There are 3 tests, a report, and an extra credit opportunity. The exams are exactly like the lecture. You need to get the book, but you can use the one he has on hold in the library. He responds to emails, and has office hours available. The class was easy, but if I'm honest. I was just not applying enough study time. Great professor overall.

A lot of people complained that his class was really hard because it was only made up of three tests, a writing assignment, and a final. That's all BS. Attend the lectures, take extensive notes on a laptop (he talks fast), and study a week before the tests and you literally do fine. He also offers an extra credit that REALLY boosts your grade.

He's a good professor you just have to show up pay attention to everything he says and write it down. He gives extra credit test questions which is cool plus one extra credit report to help your grade. I got a C but that's my fault since I didn't study as much as I should have. Studying is your homework so do it and your sure to pass.

I can understand why some may not like this professor as his humor is not for everyone. However, I found it refreshing loved the class. Would take his class again in a second. His test require study as he expects you to understand what has been taught. Do not miss lectures. They are important.

Lectures are pretty boring. Holmes can make the lectures entertaining, but I found myself yawning a lot in that class. Write good notes or else you will have a hard time on your midterms (3 midterm tests). Also, be on time or else he will make sure everyone in your class knows you are late.

Professor Holmes is just a legend. I really enjoyed his teaching style and humor. The class was a breeze as long as you read over the material which he kindly printed for us and distributed to the class. He grades quite nicely and provides extra credit. You can have a laugh with him from time to time and his class are very fun and great to be in.

I enjoyed this class so much.Took it in the summer, so be prepared to study because the material is a lot. If you're not afraid of lecture heavy classes, I suggest using a laptop to take notes and you'll do fine. The book is only helpful if you don't take good notes since he moves at a fast pace. I took his class for Summer '23 so I can later transfer it to CSUB. He's a cool person and his notes are very well organized. The tests are hard but if you write every note he's presented, study it and you'll pass. I would also recommend you do your essays way before the tests start. The textbook however is useless, it's not worth to buy it.

I took this class over summer so it was a 6 week course and that meant the lectures were a lot to watch but overall a really good class and a great way to learn more about our government. His lectures are long, but they're informative and his tests are based heavily on the lectures. I did not buy the textbook and it truthfully did not get used.

Professor Holmes was one of my favorite professors at Bakersfield College. While he is a tough grader and the course is test heavy, he makes the class super enjoyable. As long as you take notes and pay attention to the lectures you will be able to pass the class with a C or better.

I loved taking his class! Just make every day or week go over the notes you have and materal dont wait last minute to study it will not work I disoved that in the second test and had to get an 90% on the third test just to get back on track to get a C. Overal He is a great professor!!

Even though he might be very quiet outside of class, he will help you out for things you don't understand. If you don't/can't put in the time, this probably isn't the class for you. Very good and engaging lectures and keeps it super interesting, however if you don't show up you won't pass the class. That being said, class is super do-able and the grading criteria is clear. Make sure you write and memorize the essays for the exams, the rest isn't bad.

He warns students that he judges everyone and if students are sensitive, then they need to drop his class. His lectures are hilarious and informative. He has to make you memorize the material for the exams and the written portions of the exams. Literally he gives away the essay questions on the syllabus so be sure to write and study it beforehand.

In all honesty, his class is only difficult if you do not write detailed notes and wait to the very last minute to handle the essay questions. He's a very funny teacher, respectful when I spoke with him privately and very upfront on how you get graded. There's plenty of chances to gain extra credit, I look forward to his classes weekly.

Makes lectures entertaining by including jokes. Attendance isn't mandatory however he doesn't post anything online. Tests make up the whole grade, but you should be good if you study and try your best. Take advantage of the extra cred because thats the only reason i didnt finish with an A lol.

Holmes has been teaching for a long time, and it shows. He is generally pretty funny and very educated on the course. He WILL call you out during lectures for anything, so be prepared to show up on time, don't wear anything sports-related, and just have tough skin. And make sure to mention the episode of Wheel Of Fortune he was on; he'll love you.

He is great in LECTURE classes. We had 3 exams, a municipal report, and a final exam. If you were happy with your final grade before the final, you did not have to take the final. GO TO CLASS and LISTEN and TAKE NOTES. If you do that, you WILL pass. He is like the bald funny and vulgar uncle everyone has, have tough skin and he wont bother you.

Lectures were always hilarious and never really a dull moment unless you forgot to study for a test. Always answered questions and gave great responses, extra credit was pretty easy to get as long as u pay attention. I took summer school and there was 3 chances for extra credit. This professor was honestly really good coming from a student that is still in high school as I've never experienced college material. I passed his class with an A. He only grades exams/tests so if you bomb those you're not going to succeed but overall he is very clear in lectures. DONT BUY TEXT BOOK.Never used it

If you listen closley take notes and do as he suggests you should do well in the class. DO NOT purchase the textbook, i never even opened it so save yourself the money. He does not give any homework so its important to study the material. As a student still in highschool i found the class pleasant.

This is a real review about this professor. His class is mostly test-based, make sure to study, participate, and take detailed notes. I strongly recommend typing your notes for his class. His rubric is clear on what he asks for us. Work with your classmates, 5 essays for one person is obviously going to be difficult. His class is fair overall.

His class is never boring. He's very funny and the material is easy to understand. You only use the textbook once and it's for civil liberties, just check it out from the library. Also do not procrastinate the municipal report or the extra credit, it will boost your grade tremendously.

Do not buy the book! I never used it, the professor had more meaningful content in the lectures. They are at most 2 hrs long though so I suggest using copilot or a summarizer website to summarize the powerpoints. I suggest taking digital notes for the online class, as well. Make sure and pre-answer the midterm essays before the midterm!
