Maynard was okay as a prof. Sometimes he used interesting openings for his lectures such as stories about real people. His lectures were usually clear and sometimes interesting.
Extremely boring lectures, very scatterbrained with his delivery. Tried to use humour to convey points, which failed completely. Hopefully, his course will improve as he teaches it a few more times, as he still seems new to the material and introduces pointless personal experience.
What is going on in this class? Liberal Order what? Quite possibly, the worst class I've ever taken. Quite possibly the worst professor ever. The average student will find this class very hard.
Needs to speak louder or use a mic, but generally good. Unusual approach to Canadian history and I found it interesting. However good marks are hard to get.
Interesting but difficult approach. It took some adjusting to, but if you listened in class, read the essay sheets, and weren't a dumbass you could get a lot out of his course. Needs to speak up, he kind of speaks into his chest or something. Probably too hard for new-ish students
Professor Maynard has been one of the better profs I have had in the Queen's history department. His seminars do take a little getting used to at first. He has a sarcastic sense of humour, once you understand that, he is a really funny guy. He has a great teaching style and all of the articles for the course were extremely intersting.
Worst prof I've had yet. Monotone lecturer. Unclear about what he wants in essays.
Class discussions consist on trying to guess at what he has already decided is correct. Does not encourage opposing viewpoints, which effectively kills this class since it is a seminar course. Course readings are monotonous, disinteresting, and extremely repetitive.
HE is the best prof i have ever had a Queens. Very personal, very nice and very fair
More interested in telling us about his own life than encouraging open-ended discussion. Rarely guided the class and gave unclear instructions for papers. Not particularly helpful either.
Awesome guy. Expects alot out of his class, but he should. If you work hard then it reflects in your grades.
Thanks for making this entire seminar about you, and your homosexual buddies (actually) that we got to read about every tuesday night. He refuses to acknowledge that this is a history course and not some equal rights/english seminar. Instead of talking about the history of homosexuality we talk about the writing itself. Do not take any course!!!!!!
I loved Maynard! He was an engaging and interesting professor, and somehow managed to make Canadian History my favorite class in first year. In seminars, we had fantastic discussions, and in lectures he focused on less well-known versions of history, which was really interesting.
Possibly the worse professor at Queen's. If you like learning about he history of sex, gender, and the working class in Canada, this is the class for you. If you actually like learning about Canadian history, however, I strongly recommend not taking this course because of Maynard. Just awful.
Great prof. Teaches subject matter which are not traditionally covered in Canadian history
Course was boring, prof would ramble. If you don't like social history, don't take this course. Limited focus on canadian history as it is mostly about sexuality. Facebook tended to be more entertaining than lectures. Also marking was hard.
Maynard was a great prof. He does a great job relating the material in class to students' lives. His presentation could be better. Make sure you take good notes because he pretty much only puts pictures on his power points. Overall my favourite class first year
My favourite prof! Very funny, very clear, and he made the course very interesting. It's history at Queen's, of course he's a hard marker, but he's fair. I liked him so much that I'm taking his course this year just because he teaches it. Everyone loved him in my class and he's very helpful if you see him during his office hours :)
Funny, smart, knowledgeable, and consistently makes material easy to learn and remember through his use of social history and putting a face to an event. Exams are pretty basic and thematic. Don't miss this prof!
I thought he was very clear and his lectures were actually fun to attend. There is a lot of reading but it was an interesting course!
Prof Maynard is funny, charismatic and a brilliant lecturer. He talks very quickly and his slides have no writing, but if you're a good note-taker you're set for his exams, which are based almost entirely on lecture material. He explains things very well and, being a social historian, he approaches Canadian history in a unique and interesting way.
Possibly my favourite professor at Queen's. Fantastic lecturer, clear about what he wants, and makes Canadian History a LOT more exciting than I expected it to be. Other professors should take notes.
He was a great lecturer, very engaging. I wish his lecture slides had more on the, since he speaks so quickly. But he was very willing to help, and very approachable. Great prof.
Dr. Maynard's Lectures are a mix. He knows his Canadian History and is really passionate about it, He is very helpful when you talk to him one on one and is overall a really nice guy, however there are some draw backs. He speaks fast and mummbles a lot. I did not look forward to his lectures because they were too drawn out and boring.
LOVE LOVE LOVE professor maynard. I enjoyed going to his lectures, they were engaging and fascinating, which says a lot considering it was a Canadian History course. He expects a lot from his students and gives very in depth lectures with a lot of content. However, he really knows his stuff and teaches the material exceptionally well.
Maynard is an awful lecturer!! He is very passionate about his field of study but cannot deliver a proper lecture to his students! The content starts on track but then he carrys it off to unimportant context. The Seminar format of this course is also very boring. Overall I hated going to lecture and dreaded going to the seminars!
amazing, engaging professor! this man knows his history and is a passionate professor. i never missed a lecture because it felt like he was telling an amazing story opposed to a lesson. very helpful- very open to meeting with students. and in addition he is hilarious and just a fun guy- HIGHLY RECOMMEND this prof- he is a gem !
Maynard's great. His lectures are great. The seminar's aren't but it's worth it for his lectures.
Amazing amazing prof! He teaches history as a storyteller wanting to capture an audience. Assignments however are very difficult for first year students and very unclear on expectations.
Favourite class by far. Maynard is an engaging lecturer that digs deep to the root of historical events rather than simply regurgitating dates, etc. He gets you thinking and opens your eyes to why things are the way they are. Maynard is funny, insanely helpful, and cares more for his students than any prof I've had. He's a gem
I think Professor Maynard would be very hit and miss with his students. I personally really liked him, but can understand those that didn't. Different sense of humour. Really enjoyed his lectures, but you have to be a good notetaker. Only thing I didn't care for is he's really full of himself
Great Prof! Made Canadian history very interesting. Relates well to his students and genuinely cares about what's going on.
Best lecturer I had first year. Maynard is a masterful lecturer. He presents Canadian history in a way that is completely unique and alternative. Everyone who I talked to always comments on how interesting his lectures are. He's a great reason to take HIST 124.
Phenomenal lecturer. He's very articulate. Very caring to his students. The incentive to attend lectures was because of him.
Hated the course with a fiery passion. Lectures were him reading from a paper, making it hard to take notes. He's also full of himself (asked students to vote for him for best prof). I worked very hard in this class, got an okay mark & did not learn a thing. He made us 'critically think' about everything before we even learned the basic material.
First semester paper is incredibly research heavy! Beware, but its worth it.
Maynards class was a mixed bag of great and terrible. It was a first year course so that may have something to do with the horrible bit, but the research project topic sucked! It is an important skill to have as you go on in History though. One of the best lecturers I have had and makes a boring topic interesting. He is very fast talker! Good Prof!
Definitely one of the most inspiring profs I've ever had. I took HIST 124 two years ago, and am currently in his HIST 400 class, which is equally as good a class. Definitely recommend this prof if you want to be engaged!
Terrible teacher, terrible class. His exams have little to do with what is discussed and what is required in the readings.
Maynard was really great. His lectures were very intense (psych yourself up for them and show up ready to hammer out page after page of notes for an hour and a half. My wrists hurt at the end.) Lectures have pictures, but no words on the power point, so you have to listen to every word. Very intense, very hard, and very rewarding. NOT a bird course
Professor Maynard inspired me to major in History. Even if you don't find Canadian History particularly interesting, I think at least some of these lectures will leave you impressed. Prof Maynard is very helpful with questions, responds to e-mails very quickly and tries to be as clear as possible. Not an easy course but it's completely fair.
Prof Maynard is an amazing lecturer, and HIST124 is an interesting class when the subject matter wouldn't normally be interesting.
While I found Maynard's lectures interesting and fast-paced (in a good way), I thought the grading scheme was off, with one paper and exam per semester, with seminar participation. The papers/exam questions assigned were not related to the topics at hand, leaving it very hard to succeed. I have to say I was disappointed and wouldn't recommend!
Prof. Maynard is a great lecturer. Besides that, the course is set up in a very bizarre way that you will either hate or love. You learn one thing in lectures, one thing in your readings, and a completely different thing in seminars. The papers are extremely hard because they are about nothing you are learning, same with exams. Tough course.
Loved the lectures but the papers and seminars are nothing like the course material. The papers weren't too hard but the grading is very tough, and there isn't much explanation around them and it's hard to know what he wants. I never did any readings and I did fine, just pull a random quote for seminars and talk about it.
Love Maynard! Has a very specific lecture style, almost like an essay, that really lends well to clear understanding. As someone with a lot of experience in Canadian history I learned so much every week. Seminars weren't the best, but the documents he provides are very interesting. Definitely made me want to continue in another one of his classes!
I loved Maynard! I took his Hist124 lecture in first year, and knew that I had to take more classes with him. He loves his subject materiel and his lectures are consistently the most entertaining class of my week. He practically didn't ever assign readings, so if that's what you're into, which I know I am, he's your prof. History of sex, people!
10/10 prof. Maynard is easily my favourite prof at Queen's. His lectures are interesting and hilarious and I looked forward to his class. He knows how to engage his students in lecture. There isn't a lot of reading so it's important to go to lectures (but trust me you'll want to go). He makes even the most dry aspects of Canadian history fun!
Maynard is definitely one of my favourite profs at Queen's. His lectures actually make Canadian history interesting, and he is super accessible and helpful on all assignments. Really funny and caring guy, amazing first year course to get people interested in history!
Prof. Maynard's lectures often explore the concepts in a light so specific it becomes frustrating. The purpose of a first-year course is to broadly overview a large set of topics in an organized manner without a substantive bias. Unfortunately, HIST124 under Prof. Maynard fails to do so, with a disorganized course plan and misguided assignments.
Prof Maynard thinks he is the most inspiring prof at Queen's. In reality, he only listens to opinions that coincide with his own and he forces you into his way of thinking. The course should be renamed from Canadian History to What does Prof. Maynard think of Canadian History
Maynard doesn't post slides online, nor does he use text-heavy slides. He reads his lectures off a piece of paper, so if you don't go to class or get someone to take notes, you'll be lost. There are 2 textbooks required for the class but don't bother buying the second one. "Visions" is the only book you'll need
My fav prof so far. He's very likeable and fun. Nothing is posted online except for lecture outlines and the occasional reading, so you have to go to lecture. but it's a class you want to go to. Really interesting content by a great teacher
Great prof, my comments are mostly for the class itself. Interesting content, but if you've never taken history before, watch out. Instructions can be unclear at times and very tough marking if you're not a hist major. I expected to enjoy this elective but I wish I dropped it as it sank my gpa. for a 2nd year course, tough marking.
Super engaging lecturer, but grading is weighted weird. Only really weighted on the two exams, two-term papers, and seminar participation in both terms; the term papers and seminar readings not really related to what he discusses in lecture.
honestly great prof. He for sure gets a tiny bit cocky (acts like its a joke but its not) but he is a really good lecturer. Will keep you interested and really wants to engage students. TA marked everything for me so i don't know how hard he marks. Was always easy to meet with if you don't understand something & genuinely wants you to succeed.
Not your typical Canadian history course - winter semester is especially interesting. Lectures are fun and easy to follow since he posts layouts of each lecture. Doesn't post slides so definitely need to go to class or make sure you can get notes from someone. Graded on few things but all easy as long as you pay attention and put in some effort.
Prof. Maynard was my favorite first year professor; the course expectations so clear and he is a very engaging lecturer. I was able to learn a lot from this class and felt that the exam was not too difficult if you paid attention and took notes. There is no textbook and tutorial participation matters. He is the reason I will be a history major!
Prof. Maynard is one of the best professors I've had at Queens. His lectures were clear and captivating and outside of class, Maynard was generous with his time for students. He really cares about helping his students learn and is a dedicated teacher.
Surprisingly one of the best classes I have ever taken. Amazing lectures, especially in the second half of the course. Pay attention in the lectures and I guarantee you will start to look forward to attending the class each week. I am not a history student or an arts student. This class gave me fundamentals which I will carry with me for life.
One of the most organized courses I took in the remote year - bi-weekly discussion posts (with the ability to drop your lowest), a term project that consists of a proposal and final paper (opportunity to get feedback before handing in final product), an exam. Lectures not related to project or the discussion posts and can be long but interesting
Prof. Maynard is absolutely fantastic. His lectures are engaging and so entertaining. He focuses on social history and the importance of understanding how the past connects to the present. I took HIST 104 and loved his teaching so much that I had to take HIST 105. I would without hesitation take another one of Prof. Maynard's classes.
A really nice guy. He has a lot to share about the subject of pre-confederation Canada and he manages to include and connect to lots of cool facts that make lectures very interesting. The lectures were well organized, with a rubric he shares at the beginning. I loved his lectures, but my TA was a really unclear and hard grader.
A really great guy! Definitely cares about his students and knows his stuff.
Personable, Honest and assignments make sense. Exam is on lecture material only, seminars and readings are different. Overall interesting and good prof
In 2020-21 I took HIST104 and 105 with Dr. Maynard, and despite not expecting to like Canadian history, his courses inspired me to pursue a History major. He does amazing lectures and always answers questions. The exam is based only on lectures. The rest of the marks are from 2 assignments and weekly tutorials.
Wonderful lecturer, lots of material covered in class. Can't wait to take more of his courses!
Only graded by a few assignments, disorganized course plan and assignments were misguided, he seemed bizarre and disconnected from what he was teaching. Strange terminology was used for course material taught. Does not promote success in learning.
Very detailed assignment outlines, was not a fan of the hour and a half lectures. If you are looking to learn about Canadian history, I wouldn't take this course as it is based on opinions and obscure events that have a niche perspective on history. Entire course is based off of his political opinions, a tad egotistical. Does care about students.
Very passionate and interesting prof. Gives long lectures (maybe a bit too long..) but they are so worth it. He often talks about smaller historic events in a way to teach us about bigger things that exceed the field of history. In this way, we learn why history is so important as a study. Not very many graded assignments, but the few are very easy
No rubriks for written assignments. Fell asleep in every lecture. The grading was extremely high for a first year history course. I enjoyed the content, but not the way it was delivered.
My king
Loved going to Maynard's lectures. He is passionate about what he teaches and puts a lot of care and detail into lectures. Also enjoyed the way seminars were set up. Readings weren't too heavy, but assignment instructions were sometimes confusing. Overall, really enjoyed the course and I would take his class again!
Really amazing lectures and prof really cares about students succeeding. However, marking seems harder than other history classes.
He's a great professor, spunky and funny too. The grading was harder than expected. The lectures were long, bring a coffee.
Great course, seriously unlike any course I have taken at Queen's. The grading is a little on the tougher side, but as long as you come to lectures and follow instructions, you will do well. The prof is a great lecturer and helpful.
Literally my favourite professor I've ever had, will be taking all of his classes that I can. He doesn't really use a slideshow, but he does post a lecture outline which makes it really easy to follow along and take notes. He is genuinely such a great person, if we cloned this man and made him every world leader all of our problems would be solved
Prof. Maynard is so awesome. His lectures are very detailed and cyclical. He will bring up a point at the start and then tie to the end. He is also very approachable and friendly. I am eager for HIST210!
Textbook is free! Professor Maynard really has a passion for what he teaches and his lectures are super interesting. He has a way of connecting the lectures from beginning to end, and I really enjoyed learning from him. Assignments are fair, and the exam, if you go to class was not bad at all!
Maynard is a great history prof. Clearly very knowledgeable on the topic. Emphasis of the class is tutorials so if you are good at participating I would recommend
Amazing lectures. Prof. Maynard does a great job at keeping you engaged through the whole hour and a half. GO TO CLASS AND TAKE NOTES! He doesn't post slides and even if he did, there is no information on them, so pay attention and take notes!
Dr. Maynard did a good job of structuring the class and each individual lecture around the main themes of the course. He also used a lot of stories in lectures to convey concepts which was helpful. He was pretty approachable with questions and it was quite enjoyable to have a conversation with him.
Prof. Maynard is very engaging during lectures and often teaches concepts through interesting stories. He seems like a good guy who loves what he does which makes him an amazing prof. The one thing about this course is that he does not post lecture slides or anything really so it is vital that you go to lecture for this course. The exam was fine.
Prof. Maynard is a great person who uses humour and pop culture references to keep things interesting during lectures. However, he is a fast talker which makes it hard to take notes (especially when it's 1.5 hours non-stop of note taking). That being said, his grading is fair and he is very passionate about Pre-Confederation of Canada.
LOVED LOVED LOVED despite his INSANELY detailed and long lectures. Very wise and intelligent man, and despite feeling as if the only reason why he talked was to hear his own voice at times, the way he presented class material was very refreshing. It feels long but man was it entertaining! Great class :) would 100% take again
Professor Maynard is great at keeping his classes interesting and engaging. It is obvious he is very knowledgeable on the topic he teaches, which makes the class a lot more enjoyable.
Prof. Maynard is awesome! No slides, just outlines, so attending lectures and paying attention is a must. Lectures are like stories, focusing on historical figures, which can make note-taking hard. Seminars vary by TA. Clear, constructive feedback. Hilarious and a great class!
Prof was honestly great. Class was super boring but he did what he could with the content. Nice person. Go to the lectures, the slides posted online don't give enough info.
