Really good teacher. His tests are straight from the lecture, which means you have to go to class. Very funny guy, and nice to boot. You will love his lectures, and as long as you take notes and study them maybe two nights before his tests, you are guaranteed a b+ or an a. He is a great guy. Take him!!!
Nicest guy you will ever meet. Totally cool guy-laid back kind of guy. He only assigns four tests and four mini essays-which are easy might I add. you have to go to class though... which is fun actually. His lectures are really interesting andthey are everything you'll need to pass the test. Must take professor.
hes a great teacher, his tests are straight forward so come to class and 4 novels which are easy to read. he is funny and makes class interesting. defiantly recommend.
Professor Karnes is really nice and helpful. This class was easy. His lecture is straight forward and not hard to understand. 4 20-question quizzes, some novels w/10 questions asked on the quizzes, gives study guides for exams, allowed to have a full sheet of notes for exams. He's cool!
Professor Karnes is the perfect teacher. He is interesting, understanding, and just hard enough that you retain information. As long as you take notes in class you will do fine. Highly recommended!!
He's really funny and nice. His lectures are interesting and straightforward. As long as you take notes and study them, you'll do fine on the tests. Short papers are really more like answering 2 questions from assigned reading. Don't really need to buy the book. Just photocopy some pages for reference for the short papers.
Probably one of the best teachers I've ever had. He makes everything interesting and doesn't make you memorize dates. We watched part of 300 when learning about Sparta! Only tests on lectures so take good notes in class. No homework.
Really good teacher. Enjoyed going to class. Very clear and consise--go to class take notes--study those notes and you will pass. Recommend him.
His class is very interesting! Tests are based on notes (write everything he says on your notes, this will help you a lot!), but not always, read the assign chapters and you will do well! 4 exams, and 4 short essays. GREAT, GREAT, GREAT!!!
EXCELLENT teacher. Don't really need to buy the book as long as you come to class and take good notes and study them. Semi-funny guy too. No homework and tests are multiple choice
He is the history nerds of nerds, but he is still funny and makes the class enjoyable. Notes on lectures everyday, 3 quizzes from the notes, 2 midterms multiple choice and essay, and some response papers that are a page long each. Pretty easy class. Suggested.
He reminds me of the two main characters from The Big Bang Theory. Kind of a nerd.... but he keeps the class entertained. All you really have to do is go to class and take good notes. No HW, not too much studying, minimal reading. Pretty much an easy A if you're willing to put a little effort into the class.
A fantastic professor. Goofy sense of humor and easy-to-follow lectures. Ridiculously adorable. I would recommend his classes to anybody.
Horrible Horrible educator Focuses on special students to the point where the entire class tunes out. If your schedule is packed dont take this guy you wont have enough time to read the books Far too much busy work you can tell he is not comfortable with anything other than multichoice. Boring lecture, try's to act funny but fails. Thx budget cuts
Professor Karnes is the best history teacher I have had so far. His lectures are slow enough to take good notes with. He also puts the study guide up at the beginning of each section so you know what to pay attention to. He is pretty funny sometimes also. I for sure recommend him!
Professor Karnes is kind of awkward, but he grows on you. He loves History and makes it obvious, and is always down to help you. You have 4 multiple choice tests, and 4 1-2 page papers. Super easy. Attendance is lightweight mandatory, because tests on based on lecture and text. Puts his powerpoints online. Very funny and enjoyed the class.
Likable professor, good lecturer, does his best to make the class entertaining. Very easy course - multiple choice tests with study guides in advance, four very short papers. Does not grade on attendance. Textbooks were useful at times, but not often necessary. Recommended.
Awesome teacher. He is really funny and nice, and really tries to make the class interesting. You don't need to buy the textbook if you go to class and take notes, because the tests are primarily based off the notes and lectures. He also really makes the tests easy, so if you don't do good, it is your own fault. Take him!
Prof. Karnes is very engaging, funny, and makes the information "stick". He's quick to answer questions,is approachable, and what material is on exams and quizzes is crystal clear: 1. show up to class, 2. pay attention = you'll do well!
His exams are easy if you study! All historical terms in which you must give detailed definitions. He made 3hrs of this class once every week actually bearable. The four response papers are easy as well. I am repeating this class, but this time with Karnes and I passed with a B compared to the F I got with the other professor.
Best teacher at Sac State.Fun class, great lectures.I took weekly three hour classes with him and never felt bored/disengaged once.Tests are essay styled completely based on lectures. Homework is a total of four papers.Fun course. Very fair, if you want an A, study.
I loved this teacher. He is very knowledgeable on the subject. He grades easy and gives help. Has power point online. Lets you have notes on midterm and final. Also essay as part of the final. History is not my favorite subject but he made it fun and I actually leaned.... who would have thought...
Very enthusiastic in the subject and keeps the class entertained (I personally thought his jokes were funny). Always cheerful, down to earth, and does want you to pass the class. Work composed of quizzes and essays. Essays are a breeze and quizzes are based off of lectures. Great professor all around. Highly recommend!
He's definitely hilarious. There are 3 small writing assignments based on articles from the book which are pretty easy to understand. He even goes over the articles which helps. Also 2 quizzes, midterm & final. You can use a note sheet for the exams which is extremely helpful. Pay attention in class because it'll help with the quizzes & exams.
If you take VERY good notes in class, you probably won't need the textbook. He's pretty funny and very helpful.
I hate history but he somehow makes it bareable which has never been the case for me before. Great professor. I wish they were all like him
This teacher was amazing!!! Explains everything, answers and questions. Tests are easy if u show up to class everyday and take good notes. Extra credit is coming to class and going to his office and asking about the study guide. Great teacher and funny too. May wanna watch 300 and monty python the holy grail. He references these movies a lot.
Karnes knows a lot about what he's teaching. He's so passionate about it! He makes history interesting, when personally I think that it's the most boring subject out there. Attendance is extra credit, I never used the text book, I only used the small book, to do writing assignments, which were very easy! 4, one page writing assignments summarizing/answering questions about a 3-5 page story from the small text book. I highly recommend Karnes as a professor!
By far the best history teacher I've ever had. History isn't really my thing (I like it but not that much) but he made me want to change to a history major. His class is easy but I learned more in it than any other History class.
One of my favorite professors I've ever taken. He makes history interesting, so it's not boring. He also can make you laugh due to jokes about history and geeky stuff like Star Wars/Star Trek. If you want a easy history can you should really take his class.
Best history teacher I have ever had! Usually history is really boring for me and it never keeps my attention, but he teaches like he is telling a story so it keeps the class engaged. He's really easy going, and there is hardly any homework. I highly reccomend him!
He is a great professor and I highly recommend taking his class.
Best history professor I ever had! He explains really well and you will leave the class with knowledge of something that you never knew before. I highly recommend him to anyone whose looking for a history class.
Possibly my favorite instructor I've had in college. Really lively and passionate about history. Extremely funny, and knows how to keep you interested in the lectures. Professor Karnes has a vast array of knowledge from the general facts down to little factoids. Class is well organized and structured as well. Definitely recommend.
Great knowledge of history and does a great job at teaching. Answers questions if needed, and really nice about it. Pretty funny, and makes the subject very interesting. 4 exams, 83% of grade, 4 easy two-page papers, 17% of your grade. I would definitely take his class again.
He is the biggest sweetheart! Goes out of his way in class and during office hours to help his students. He truly cares about them. Three easy paper assignments that are only 2 pages, and off small readings in the books. Four tests: 30 terms (who what where when significance). He picks 10, you choose 5. Just take notes! Good class:)
Karnes is THE best professor I've ever taken. He's hilarious and makes his lectures super interesting. No midterm final, just five (easy) small tests that are lecture based so don't get the main book. You will need the source book for the small papers (easy too). He also has multiple options for extra credit. If you have to take Hist 50, take him!
Make sure you pay attention on his lectures. Lots of information, but easy to remember. Mandatory attendance for the notes. 3 tests, and 3 short papers. Hilarious professor too! Easy class.
Class is mandatory if you want to do well on quizzes, but he doesn't take roll. Overall was a fun class & professor Karnes is super funny.
Great professor. Weekly quizzes, but just attend class. You can pass with a high B and never read the book. Only 4 exams total. Go to class because the his ppt's won't help you understand. I would take it again.
Hands down the best professor in this Earth. Take his class. Trust me on this.
clear on everything that he expects
Took this for humanities cause why not. Amazing prof! He lectures clearly and encourages questions. Ask away if you do not get something, he will make sure you get it. Tests were easy if you do the study guides. 3 short papers that are easy. Show up to class or don't, his lectures are interesting. Don't need the book. Take this class, seriously.
This man is an incredible professor. With only 4 tests & 4 two-pg papers, his class structure is simple and fairly easy. Since the tests are mainly based off his lectures, coming to class & taking notes is very important; however, he makes it worthwhile with his hilarious impersonations and movie references! :) An A is very doable -- take him! :)
I love this professor! He makes history so interesting and he is hilarious! His tests are extremely easy, you only have to write on four terms. He gives you the study guides at the beginning of the semester so you can fill them out as he lectures. He's an amazing professor.
Don't buy the textbook!!! It is not worth it!!! The essays and tests are entirely lecture based. Do not lose your money!!
Super easy class. He's a wonderful teacher. Coming from someone who doesn't like history that much, he made me want to come to class. Would highly recommend!!
He is an AMAZING professor. As long as you show up to class and actually listen, you will pass his class with flying colors. Shouldn't be too hard because he makes his lectures interesting. Also, he gives extra credit if you go to his office hours, so that's a plus. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING HIS CLASSES!!!
He made a boring subject interesting throughout the semester. I was not interested in ancient to renaissance history but this class was not bad. The teacher cracks jokes from time to time. I would recommend him. Grading system very clear and easy to understand. He doesn't overwhelm you with busy work.
Really good professor but his assignments are tough. His lectures are amazing, I never felt bored in the class. He is funny too. Would recommend but get ready to put in the work for his papers and tests.
Super nice and caring professor. He wants you to pass and has a good amount of office hours and is willing to go over the lecture with you during office hours if you missed his class. I would definitely take another class that he teaches. His tests were not multiple choice, they are short essay responses. VERY great class
He is an absolutely amazing professor. I have taken him twice now and he makes history very interesting (makes you want to be a hist major!). He cares so much about his students and tries his best to make sure you do well on tests. Just 3 short papers and 3 tests! Highly recommend him.
I LOVE LOVE Professor Karnes. I hate history, but this man right here saved me from dying in lectures, instead I'd die laughing, because he is so hilarious. He makes boring topics really interesting, it almost doesn't feel like History for me anymore. All you have to really do is pay attention and take good notes, save yourself from buying the book
This was by far the best class I have ever taken at Sac State. Professor Karnes really cares about his students, gives amazing feedback on your work, and he's makes it a fun class so it makes it that much easier to ace the exams. Don't by the textbook, you will never use it. Just the two books for the readings you will need, which are cheap.
He is an amazing professor! You can tell that he is educated in the subjects he lectures on and he is definitely passionate about them. He is funny and likes to imitate some people and events from the lecture. There are 3 exams and 3 essays. If you take good notes and pay attention, you'll pass with flying colors. I would definitely take him again.
He's an amazing teacher to be honest, and Prof Karnes likes to add humor into his lectures, which makes lecture seem not too long. He is also always willing to help out during his office hours. I would definitely like to have him again as a professor.
He is a very devoted professor, and I would take him again. His lectures are never boring, and you will learn a lot. There were a few papers required to do, but it was not long, and he gives good feedback to make improvements for future assignments. Make sure to read to do the papers. The exams were pretty easy if you study and show up to class.
Straight-forward GE class that has 3 tests and 3 papers (3-4 pgs each). Don't need the book but you do need to show up to class and take good notes to use for you papers and tests. He gives study guides that have the terms of what's going to be on the tests. You need to go to class on discussion days to get participation points. He's really nice.
I loved the HIST 51 class, I typically hate history but he makes history seem bearable. He always lectures and cracks as many jokes as he can. I never used the textbook that is required, and when I would miss a class or two and it set me back so make friends to lend you notes. He assigns 2-3 papers, and has 10 quizzes but drops the lowest
Karnes is funny, nice, and is incredibly passionate about what he teaches. His class is fun and an easy A, as long as you show up.
Extremely funny and does not mind spending a little bit of time answering questions after his lecture. You can tell he really loves the subject and his class is really fun. No homework aside from 3-4 papers (only have to be about two pages or so) and three exams. Don't need the text book if you show up every lecture, if you miss class you'll fail.
Steve is a funny professor and keep lectures interesting. I hate history, but he makes it easy. 3 exams all based on writing 4 terms & 3 papers only 2 pages long each. Attending lectures are best, because he explains the terms. 2 books, but only one is required, so you can write your paper. Easy class, listen to lecture and you'll pass.
This professor is great. I would highly recommend him to anyone trying to fill in their GE requirements. He has really interesting lectures and is very charismatic. He has 3 papers along with 3 test and two books. Easy grader.
Prof Karnes is really nice, funny, and interesting. Some reading is required but it is piece of cake. his lectures are really interesting and funny, easy to understand, clear explanation so very easy to memorize. all of his test were very easy all comes out from lectures he never test you on the materials that he didn't teach! take him for easy A.
First year going into college and Professor Karnes is the best teacher I had so far. I went into his office hours every time we had an essay due and he would help me, not with just the essay material but writing in general. His lectures were never boring as he is a hilarious guy and made the material interesting. I almost switched majors.
Professor Karnes is a pretty decent professor, he obviously loves what he does which is respectable. There are some students that have his same interests as him which he seems to like a little more than others. I did pretty good on my essays and tests, everything he teaches will be on the exam, there won't be material you didn't cover.
Professor Karnes is a great professor. He is hilarious during lectures and makes the material interesting. He assigned weekly readings that are easy. Overall great professor. Would definitely take him again.
In this class you have to do 3 essay exams (he gives you a study guide before), 3 easy papers based on readings from the book, and 9 Quizzes (he only counts 6 towards your grade). He is very enthusiastic and makes his lectures interesting. I don't like history very much but I would take his class again.
The homie high key. Obviously loves what he does. He makes history, INTERESTING. I highly suggest you take this course for GE. 9 quizzes but only 6 count (He lets you retake 3 to get a higher grade). 2 Midterms + final. 3 papers. Honestly, it was so easy. Just listen to what he says and jot down a few notes. Easy A.
Professor Karnes was by far one of the best and funniest professor I had! I took his class as a GE requirement and it was a great idea. You did have to read two books and come prepare to class discussions, but that part was breezing because the reading was easy. There was some essay, but you can simply get it done. EASY A class just do the work!
Professor Karnes is very straightforward when it comes to explaining assignments and essays. He encourages students to ask questions and visit office hours frequently. Wants the best for his students and also encourages participation during group readings and presentations. Has a good sense of humor.
He's a great professor! There's just a lot of reading to do. For each book there is about 2-3 pages of questions(7-8 questions/page). They aren't difficult, but you must read. There are 3 exams and 2 essays. He is always willing to meet after class to answer any questions. He can also be really funny!
JUST DO YOUR WORK AND DO THE STUDY GUIDE PLUS THE READINGS ARE INTERSTING! YOU WILL DO FINE I GOT A "B" IN THIS CLASS. HE WILL ADD ANYONE IF SEATS ARE OPEN. GOOD LUCK!
HRS 151 was an easy class. Just do the reading and pay attention when you discuss the questions if you do its basically an easy A on the tests, Essay has a simple format dont overthink it and you should get a good grade. Easiest A i ever got i only missed 1 point in the class. best upper division and I believe area C req.
Professor Karnes is an outstanding professor. He does expect a lot out of his students, mainly to keep up on the reading assignments and the questions. Attending lectures are necessary to do well on exams. Two papers, midterm, final and weekly class book discussions. Highly recommended!
Professor Karnes is a fantastic teacher. Class attendance is mandatory to your grade however most class sessions are based on group discussion which he looks over to make sure you did, and lecture which is easy to follow along. Fantastic and easy upper division course.
So passionate about his lectures!
Good lectures, but a lot of papers to write, and exams after each lecture. Not an easy A.
Is very passionate about mythology and cares about what students learn. Has lots of lectures, powerpoints, and group discussions through the course. Two 5-page papers through the course but is a very easy course. The first test was multiple choice. Great professor, quickly responds to email and is the most approachable professor I'v ever had.
Professor Karnes was the highlight of my semester. He made history so fun and entertaining. By far the funniest professor I've ever had. If you go to lecture and participate in discussions, you'll get an A. Easiest class I have ever taken. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Had this teacher twice now and he's very enthusiastic and makes the material easy to learn. Exams and quizzes are simple if you listen to the lecture; taking notes on the study guide is helpful. Papers aren't too complicated. Although a textbook is used it's not really required, you can take the exams without having it. Overall really great.
Professor Karnes was one of the best professors I had a sac state so far. He somehow made learning about ancient Greek and Roman architecture and literature super interesting. His assignments are not difficult and neither are his exams. All multiple choice and only two 3 page essays for the semester required. Overall, great teacher and light work!
He was really good professor overall and made class always funny. I would recommend taking his class! Don't try to miss too many classes since a lot of the info he gives is important. He does quizzes after each chapter but they're only 5 questions and straight forward. The papers are pretty easy just textbook can be tricky. Great class though!
Karnes is a very passionate teacher. He will really help you if go to his office hours. In the class, three 2-page papers, 4 exams including the final. Final is not cumulative. His exams are based on his lectures so attendance is recommended to do well. Can be humorous in his lectures at times. Take lots of notes during lecture. Helps lots
Steven Karnes is one of the best professors, if not THE best, to ever teach on Earth. This man is God's gift to History education. He is so enthusiastic about what he teaches. Take him and I swear you won't regret it. Just show up and take notes and it will be one of the best academic experiences of your entire life.
One of the best experiences I've had with a professor. His lectures are really fun and he makes it interesting. Definitely take him.
Prof. Karnes is an amazing professor and a very engaging lecturer. He tries his best to make the content interesting, by far the best professor in Sac State. I highly recommend taking his classes, its an easy A. Just come to class and take notes. 2 exams (midterm/final). 2 papers (midterm/final). Easy group discussions. It's really hard to fail.
Steven Karnes is a fantastic professor. He makes class enjoyable and fun to go to. We read 4 myths in hrs 151, all were pretty easy reads. Make sure you do the discussion questions and participate in the group discussions. One midterm and one final exam, both are relatively easy. They were based on the lectures and discussion questions.
I thought it was going to be an easy A, but it was definitely not. He tries to make it interesting, but the lectures were so boring. He's a picky grader. He assigns 3 papers and gives 4 exams. He only gives you points when you write what he wants to hear, even if you answer is correct. Not a super hard class, but definitely based on the lectures.
He's funny, he knows how to teach, he's helpful and made the course great overall. His lectures were helpful and he was clear with what he wanted from your papers and how he would grade them. If you study, you'll do great.
I took this class because I thought it would be interesting, but it was very difficult to understand greek mythology. It was especially to motivate myself to learn it during the pandemic. I would not take this class again. It is too much reading for an undergrad class. His lectures are super boring and he takes roll every class.
(Fall 2019) A really good Professor! Makes lectures fun and you can tell he is passionate about the subject. The only things that are in his class are writing assignments, quizzes, and tests. The assignments require an online source you need to purchase and I would suggest studying names and era titles. He provides study guides for tests/quizzes.
He tries his hardest to make his lectures interesting. You have to write notes as he teaches, but if you have any questions, you can email or go to office hours and he will always help you.
He is a funny guy! Keeps the class entertained. 2 exams, 2 essays, 9+ reading discussions, and lots of reading! The exams are straightforward, if you study the lectures and answers from the discussions, you will pass. Do everything bc they are all worth lots of points. If you dont, expect an easy 7% + drop in grades
Lectures were recorded but they were entertaining and easy to follow. Weekly quizzes on the lectures but they were easy. A few discussions but mostly about your thoughts and opinions on a topic. Reading assignments. There are three essays but you only have to do one and it counts as your final. Overall, great professor and an easy class.
Great professor, very knowledgeable. Asynchronized class, 1 required book that we used throughout the semester, weekly discussions, a couple of small quizzes, and a final. The subject was interesting and once you establish a pattern then the class will go by quick. I recommend this professor and this class!
Really tough and unfair grader. No zoom meetings, only 1 hour+ recorded lectures. Almost every week we read a new myth and had to complete reading questions. Weekly quizzes. Big quiz for midterm. One big essay as a final. Honestly thought this class would be fun and interesting but was more stressful and time consuming. Don't really recommend.
I was truly disappointed with his class. There are too many writing and analytical assignments given weekly. Only 1 hour recorded lectures given each week. 5 minutes to answer 5 question quizzes, and they are difficult questions. EXTREMELY tough grader. DONT take his class unless you have to, it will have you stressed out the whole semester.
The only thing that upset me about this class was that it wasn't in person. He was the type of professor that not only had interesting lectures on mythology, but he can make you laugh even though the lecture was pre-recorded. I wish I waited to take this class until everything was open. There's a lot to read in the book, so be prepared for that.
This teacher is EXTREMELY enthusiastic about what he teaches, and as someone with little to no interest in history classes, he was a real blessing. I wish I was able to go to this class in person because the teacher has a very likeable personality. The course has no tests, just mini quizzes to confirm you watched the lectures, and 4 papers (2 page)
This professor is the best history professor ever, his lectures are very interesting! He has weekly quizzes that are 5-10 questions long based on his lectures that week. He also has 4 papers due that are 2 pages long. I visited his office hours and he was always helpful with the papers and I always got full credit!
I took him for HIST 10 and it was a super easy and fun class! There is one assignment every week and it is super easy and actually interesting to learn about.
great professor! is very passionate about what he teaches and makes lectures interesting. 2 books are required. you have 3 options for an essay but you only have to do one and it counts as your final. short and easy quizzes on the lecture every week and there are discussions in class on the readings (you have to participate once for credit)
I would not take this class! He is a VERY tough grader. the practice quiz does not match the actual quiz (which is like 20% of your grade). That goes for all assignments to (description differs from reality). The writing assignments are very specific and he's an impossible grader. I reached out multiple times for help and was met with nothing.
There was a lot of assignments and a lot of reading. Too much work for one class, tough grader.
Best professor ever! The way he lectures is so entertaining, I'm always interested to hear him speak (and I could listen for hours). The class is organized, all PPT slides are available via Canvas, and expectations are clear. There are easy online quizzes (5 min) and 1 Final Essay (very easy to write). Note taking helps you on quizzes and the final
great professor, can tell that he likes teaching this course. grades based on reading assignment and some quizzes, should be easy if take notes and pay attention to lectures. attendance mandatory only for discussions days where the whole class talks. overall, pay attention to what he is saying and the class should be easy.
Professor Karnes is a great professor! I really enjoyed his History class the class material and content is very straight forward as long as you just pay attention to his lectures and take notes. Really enjoyed his class would take it again for sure!
Professor Karnes is probably one of the best professors I have ever had. He is really passionate about all of the topics and the class is very easy if you follow instructions.
many people are saying to not take him but honestly think they just didn't pay attention. there are reading and question assignments but can honestly be done in less than an hour. As long as you answer correctly you get full points. frequent quizzes on lectures but super easy if you pay attention. His lectures are really good and he is really funny
He is a really funny teacher and his lectures are always very interesting. There were no tests or projects, just have to answer questions from the homework in class.
I love this prof!! He is the best teacher I have ever had because he is so enthusiastic about hist and his quizzes are exactly what he talks about in class. This class is really easy to understand if you just take notes in class. I would highly recommend taking any course with this prof; I have nothing but good things to say about him
Super nice and enthusiastic professor! Mostly lecture for first half of semester with reading homework's for the second half. He is pretty lenient when it comes to grading and is accessible outside of class. It's a great class to cover a GE area or if interested in mythology. There is a weekly DQ and quiz if there is no homework, but both are easy.
Prof. Karnes is awesome. Grades things pretty hard but is also super helpful and genuinely wants to see his students succeed. show up and you'll do good
Professor Karnes had no regards to students and doesn't read your entire assignment. He grades very harshly to where I believe it was unjust. I would not recommend taking his class, grading was unfair and I regret taking his class. Sad.
Really interesting choices to the World Mythology class! As long as you're prepared to actually read the books, you'll do fine on the homework. He grades fairly and attendance just matters on "discussion" days. Exams are made from the reading assignments and lectures (which have PPTs included on Canvas). Fun class and worth taking
Easy, In-person course; timed, short quiz per week (online; 5-10 questions based on ppts; due Sundays); No midterm/final exams (4 papers total; roughly 2 pages); Tough grader; Textbook: Globalyceum ($50) for papers; Overall, he is a passionate & funny professor; can run late sometimes but tries to get to class on time.
i read the reviews for the professor and they all said great things.... well, he is good professor, but the grading is extremely harsh. for the papers, i would write everything i could and still get a b :/. if u find having an average grade in this class, then take this professor
Karnes is a great teacher, he makes it super easy to pass. If you do not pass it's because you put literally no effort in. He grades kind of harshly but you will get at least get a B if you try. He rounds grades and offers extra credit. If you aren't a hist major the reading might seem like a lot. You have to buy 5 small, super cheap, books.
Got a C- because I forgot to submit some assignments. Super easy to pass this class. Wouldn't say it's an easy A because that'd require lots of reading. You have to buy some books but they're inexpensive and some can be found for free online.
trust the reviews 5/5! there are little cheap books that you must have but you can just find them online. lectures are funny and interesting, and assignments/discussions are easy and straightforward. a cool teacher who is caring and attentive. he does not make the class stressful. 1 midterm that is based on lectures and readings and 1 final paper.
I absolutely loved taking this course. First half of semester is lecture heavy with some reading assignments, and the second half is a lot more reading heavy. Professor Karnes is a caring, funny, and fun teacher who tries clearly loves what he teaches and loves teaching in general. Does grade a bit harsh, but put in effort and you'll pass with a B.
I trusted a lot of these great reviews for the teacher talking about how easy the course is. The class is more than the reviews make it out to be. Prepare for a GOOD amount of homework, so if you already have classes that give long assignments, this might not be it. homework usually consists of 6 4-part questions which gets really old really fast.
This was an interesting course. We learned about different myths from all various ancient societies. There was 1 midterm, a few discussions, 1 paper and no final.
Great lecturer makes history interesting with side stories if you don't love history and are taking it for GE req., going to class does help for the weekly quizzes and goes over the paper expectations and explains why he docks points on them.
This class with Professor Karnes is really interesting. The readings are manageable, and the assignments/exams are straightforward if you stay on top of the material. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for prepping for the midterm. Overall, a solid course worth taking.
This was a great and fun class, but be warned it is challenging. Many weekly readings take up a lot of time and hard questions. He is willing to help out during office hours.
Genuinely one of the best professors I have had, even as someone not majoring in history, you can easily enjoy and pass his class as long as you are trying. He is incredibly passionate about what he teaches and shows a lot of care towards his students.
Great myth textbooks, lectures easy to follow, discussions are mandatory but enjoyable. Only one exam at midterm, finals include myth analysis paper. Most homework is reading assigned portions, answering questions accurately, which get discussed in class. Great to talk to in office hours. DON'T PROCRASTINATE ON READING, some books can be long.
The lectures were top notch! A quiz or discussion about every week with a few papers here and there. Essay grading is a little on the strict side but the syllabus is up front about it and if you study you should be fine. Would absolutely take a class with Professor Karnes again, his lectures were the best!
