Tough!!!! If you want a challenge and to learn a lot, then take him
This man is the devil!! Don't take him if possible.... Take Price she's a little ditzy but she's a good teacher.
He's completley arrogant and a HORRIBLE teacher to work with. He pressures his students and is not supportive at all. WEird, annoying, and cocky.
you get out what you put in

Look out for this one! He's a crazy guy and its his way or no way, especially when it comes to paper. The guy basically expects you to read his mind. Best advice I can give you...get on his good side and stay there!
Extremely rude, annoying and obnoxious. Does what he can to get students to drop out of his class and the program with his bad attitude. Plus, he never shaves or cuts his hair. Avoid at all costs!
Knowlton is an extremely intelligent individual in the field of journalism. The people who have posted negative comments probably expected him to be another "typical Hofstra" professor. Take him if you're actually interested in learning.
he was hard so were his tests a lot of people failed
Had him at Penn State years ago. After graduating and working in the field -- his were the classes that stuck with me and helped me the most. You will learn how to write, edit, and think in new ways. It won't be easy, but it's worth it.
Good...very informative.
Knowlton is an amazing teacher, journalist and human being. If you're a typical airheaded Comm student who wants to look pretty on TV, don't take his class. If you're a journalist, you must.
Airheaded student or not I promise you won't like him. It's his way or the Long Island Expressway and there are no shortcuts
best teacher at hofstra. respects intelligence. have an opinion, support it and he will enhance your college experience
If you want to learn to think, he's your man. If you want to fulfill a core requirement to be in broadcast, don't waste your time or his.
I actually did well in this class, somewhere in the B range, but I was one of very few. Despite how I did, I WOULDN'T recommend this teacher. He's the reason I changed my major to Business Management. He's just a nasty guy- bad attitude- rude to students.
I'm not an "airhead student" and I ended up dropping his class. He gave me a D on a paper because I didn't agree with him on something.

Kind of a smart-ass, mean to students, creates uncomfortable learning environment, but knows a lot about journalism. He's the reason I'm not a journalism major anymore.
Terrific teacher if you do your work and are active in class. Leave your sensitive side at the door.
Overall a good guy. He does insult you if you make stupid comments. He knows his stuff. It's not a cakewalk, but I'd recommend him if you actually wanna enjoy class.
Extremely hard teacher, but very effective, and run a fun class.
he likes people with opinions as long as there is logic behind them
Awesome teacher, and will provoke you to think. His class was the only one all semester I didn't spend looking at my watch waiting for it to end. He always keeps things interesting.
He is a pathetic man. He needs a haircut and his class was awful. I took good notes and studied them really hard and wrote exactly what he said on the midterm and he still failed me. Would never EVER take a class with him again, what an ass!
if you have this prof. just kill yourself now, he is difficult, dogmatic, and treats the students like crap. we had to write 3 papers that you could redo as many times as needed, by the end i wrote 11 papers and he still failed me.
this prof. has interesting discussions and makes you think. if you do your work and pay attention in class youll b fine. decent grader, but i learned a lot from him
He is a tough grader but extremely smart.I forewarn anyone that takes him in the spring 04 and on it will be a much harder class. If you need to take the class and want a easy teacher he is not the one to take. If you want to learn he's it.
He is the funniest, most interesting intellectual! He's fair, he's helpful, understanding, and he has great jokes! You'll enjoy his class because he makes it enjoyable. He expects a lot, but from him I'd take that as a compliment. GO CHIEF!

he's soo smart. he's a hard grader, but u'll learn A LOT from him. he's also funny. if u want an easy class, i don't recommend him, but if u wanna learn, he know's his stuff & he'll get u thinking. i would take him again.
He is a great professor and he made class fun.The actual class is tough but lots of chances to rewrite papers. tough attendance policy.if u wanna learn take him if u want an easy A he's not the guy for you!
Wow - amazing professor. Tough but stimulating. Not an easy A but a great professor to learn from.

Hard teacher, no doubt, but you will learn. People who do not want to think, stay away(thats you TV and PR majors). This guys will spend as much time with you as you need and has resurrected the school of comm.
If you are in journalism,(AND a pr major despite what some closed minded students think) take this class! Excellent teacher! If you go to class and pay attention, exams aren't that bad. Be prepared to write a lot on them though. He's one of the best!
Defending Democracy the Moral way!
this man knows what he is talking about. the people that don't like him don't do the readings, don't speak up in class, and probably do not know what is going on the world. if you want to learn, take knowlton. my favorite class to date.
I thought he was bad to be honest. He knew what he was talking about but at the same time I thought only his opinion counted.

He is very demanding and can be condescending. You will work your ass off and you will learn in his class. Even though the class was a pain, I'd recommend it.

He is the worst. He only cares about his own opinion. Never take him.
Don't listen to the people whining about this class. Sure he's tough on everything, but he definitely knows his stuff. In order to keep up, you have to be able to have a discussion. A good class if you're serious about journalism.
great man is a genious, loves what he does, if your a journalism person its a must i wasnt so it was difficult for me, but for those who wanna be journalists you have to he will change your life and prolly your opinions, super nice guy, wants you to get it
This guy SUCKS! I would participate and instead of him supporting my answer or at least giving CONSTRUCTIVE critisism, he would just bash my comments. In his class it's his way or no way, and why?? cause he wrote the text book you use in the clas

He is great. People dont like him becuase he is a nut job,but at the same time,it was the most entertaining class i have ever taken. He is extremely smart, and he can be a dick, but make valid arguments and ull be fine.
knowlton has got it going on.
knowlton is the ****ing man. if you don't like him, it's because you suck and you were probably too stupid to succeed in his class, or you just plain suck.
He likes to know he's making your brain hurt, which in the end is extremely beneficial to YOU b/c you will come out of the class having actually LEARNED something. You get out of his class what you put in. Be willing to use your BRAIN for once.
Chief knows his stuff. He's a journalist, so you're being taught by someone who knows first-hand. Yeah, he may seem daunting at first, but he is more than helpful if you ask. Take him!

By far the most knowledgable professor i have taken at hofstra. if you dont participate in class you will not understand what is going on. you will do much better if you talk to him and he gets to know you. pay attention and take notes, he may let you use them on the midterm and final exam!
He loves to hear himself speak. He has no consideration for the students as individuals. He is harsh and cold hearted. He rambles on and doesnt teach, just discusses. He really has a bug up his ass and is very unclear with assignments. Wat an a**hole. really. from the bottom of my heart.
He's very fair, but difficult. Make sure you read everything he gives you. I dropped the class and I have a 3.7 GPA, so he's hard whether you're smart or not. Make sure you put in a lot of effort.
Professor Knowlton is a genius. The fact that he is so smart makes him more sexually appealing than he already is. Sure, he might be a little crazy, but what genius in world history hasn't been a little nuts? He is so incredibly sexy, and isn't scared to mix and match his clothing. take this class.
yeah knowlton!
Knowlton has a reputation but really, he's not too bad -he's not very helpful when it comes to the 3 papers -hard grader but he knows SO much and as long as you know that what you're going to say in class is 100% effective to the conversation, participate cause if you don't he'll call on you anyway!

I hated this class sooooo much, yes he knows what he's talkin about but tends to be very condesending with students. Thinks journalism is the end all be all of the world. He's a hard grading a**hole.
I took him for JRNL 1 and never worked so hard for a B, but learned more in his class than any other. While he's hard on his students, he's preparing us for the real world as journalists. If you want an easy A, don't take him. If you want learn about journalism and the media, he's your man.
Knowlton is reason enough to be a Print Journalism major--he approaches the subject scholarly, and creates a classroom that challenges everyone, not just those who raise their hand. If you want the A, you can get it--read, answer questions, and know your ethics for the midterm. No final too w/A avg.
prof knowlton is soo hard. prepare to devote your life to his class. u always have to do the readings and most likely whether u do them or not he will call on you and embarrass you. he thinks he is always right and basically fails everyone on the midterm. not a nice man at all!!
I HATED professor knowlton...he really made me cry one day. His class is really hard. You MUST read and if you dont write what he his opinion would be on papers and tests, you will get a bad grade. Definatley avoid his class if you can.
This guy sucks, he's really REALLY mean, and totally needs to take some classes in being a decent person. If you want to cry, be miserable, and get crap grades then take this guy. Chances are none of you are that dumb.
Okay so all the whiny people who don't like to work need to give it a rest. Prof Knowlton is the reason I am now a Print major. He knows what he is talking about and actually makes you think. Yes you have to work but this is college. Get over it. Take him and do what he asks and you can EARN an A.

UNFAIR GRADER. Journalism is about opinions, but if you do not side with his opinion he fails you. Failed many in my class. I switched majors because of him! Very unfair, interesting, but unfair. DO NOT TAKE
First of all, journalism is not about opinions, it is about seeking and accurately reporting the truth. Therefore, opinions aren't worth a damn in an ethics class. You're either right or you're wrong. I'm glad chief has people dropping the major if they ca
he knows what he's talking about, he respects you if you respect him, and he's a wonderful professor. if you're looking for an easy a don't take him. you have to work, but he's as fair as it gets
If you can't hack his class you can't hack the real world of journalism. Get out now and make room for those of us that aren't scared off by a challenge or adversity. If you have any chance of being a real journalist you need to be able to succeed in his class.
his oral quiz was the hardest thing i ever took! i read the books, and still had no idea what he was talking about. failed the oral quiz only to have an option of writing a 10-page paper that would get me the highest, a c. i opted out. the bulletins on current events were confusing..never understood what he really wanted. almost dropped his class to take prof. price's..at least i would have understood what was going on.
If you are a journalism major don't read this. But if you're not, don't even think about taking this class. Knolton thinks what he teaches is more important than anything in the world. He litterally believes that journalism holds the world together. It is probably the hardest class I have taken at this school. If this isnt your pation get out FAST!
Knowlton is a ****ing LUNATIC! Im not kidding I needed 1journalism credit to graduate in May last year. I bust my ass and I mean BUST IT get an A on the midterm. participate in class then with 4 weeks left in the semester I got in a really bad car accedent and was in the hospital for 2 weeks. He said theres no way to make up the work, and FAILED ME
he is full of himself and somewhat mean. get over that and just agree with everything he says in class and youll do fine. midterm wasnt that bad, lots of readings that you have to be able to answer on the spot in class. he does know what he is talking about. he hates PR. not an easy A.
If you are interested in journalism then take this class. He is def opinionated, but he knows what he's talking about. As long as you do the readings you should be fine in class. Tests are very straightfoward and easy if you go to every class. The best class I have taken so far, and the most I have ever learned.
A friend recommended that I take Knowlton's class and I'm glad I did. I learned a lot about journalism ethics and was pushed to think more. Many don't like him because he actually has the boldness to tell people that they're wrong. He holds journalism in high regard and expects a lot from his students, but not too much. Do the reading and you'll ge
if i wrote what i thought of this professor...it would get deleted.
this is a class where you need to be there every day willing to work. TRY NOT TO TAKE AT ALL COSTS. He is opinionated but thinks you are stupid if you dont agree with him
Very interesting class. Opens a lot of new schools of thought on journalistic ethics. You must keep up with the readings and understand them, but if you know his views on things, and you use them on your tests and assignments, you'll be fine.
pompous jerk...will not be ashamed or afraid to make you look like an idiot in class...DROP IMMEDIATELY!!
Very smart guy. Enjoyed the class because the material and the discussions were interesting. However, I began to get discouraged to participate in class when he basically called me dumb in class one day. He definitely shoots you down if he doesn't agree with you. However, I did get an A in the class.
This professor is very talented at what he does. Take him ONLY IF you are very serious about journalism. I took the class because I thought I was interested in the subject, and after taking his class I can officially say that Journalism is not for me.
A great professor, a great man. This man will teach you not only about journalism, but about life. I am a teacher now and apply lessons he taught me in my classes every day. Take his classes and LEARN something.
He was tough as hell and had that old school print journalism way about him. I wanted to transfer because he was so tough and I could not handle it. BUT..................... He was right about everything! Journalism today is biased trash on cable news channels. His NY Times quizzes every Friday is why I am not an avid NY Times reader every day
