Too hard! Too much reading. Avoid at all costs!
Exams are so detailed, study hard to get a good mark. Lots of essay writing.
He was a great lecturer. He is very clear, easy to listen to. I really enjoyed his class.
You can tell he's extremely enthusiastic about the course material, which is sometimes infectious. He leaves lots of room for self-direction as far as papers go.
A fascinating prof, very interested in the subject and conveys a detailed and interesting history course. At times difficult to keep up with and requires a high standard on tests, but still recommended.
Excellent teacher, very helpful and extremely enthusiastic. But exam difficult and paper a hassle. Lots of readings, but his lectures are interesting enough to make up for it.
He is a good teacher but expects too much of his students. You will be expected to read a dry, 300-500 page history book every 1-2 weeks, and take detailed notes and discuss it in the tutorials.Even my TA couldn't keep up.Most people just stopped reading.
He expects a lot from his students. Hard marker on essays, difficult assingments, and assaigns a huge amount of reading. But he is extremly passionate about what he is teaching, very knowledgable, and very very helpful if you have any troubles.
too much reading, sticky marker, weird exams.
He is a very passionate and enthusiastic lecturer. He is also very approachable and really nice. The only thing is that he gives way too much reading, (a few hundred pages per week) and exams are very detailed. But in the end you learn alot.
expects too much of his students, for a first year course it was way too demanding. Way too much reading, lectures make me want to cry... His TA's were awesome however, the only reason i passed...
he's passionate about what he does...but he throws dates out like crazy and expects way too much.
Negative: there is no notes and you have to write down everything he says in class. Positive: topics are pretty interesting and the exams are easy as long as you prepare for the long essays. It's pointless to read the texts, there not barely tested on.
WAY TOO MUCH READING. That's the biggest issue I have. 140 pages of dry reading doesn't really encourage you to be interested in the course. Also, get ready for major information cram (and hand cramp from writing) in the lectures -- you have to write down everything he says, which isn't easy.
Lectures were all over the place, slightly hard to follow with a lot of insignificant detail and dates. Assigned far too much reading. Quite often started class late. Had brutal TAs for this section that could barely speak English and were terribly unhelpful. I like history but after this course...
The readings and the structure of the course were completely random, so I'm not sure if I learned that much, but Steven Lee himself is THE NICEST MAN YOU WILL EVER MEET. He's a bit weird, but he's SO cute!! He's the kind of man you wish were your uncle.
Great guy, easy to approach. His reading requirements are insane but his exams are pretty easy as are his papers.
Assigns an unrealistically excessive amount of reading - an amount beyond comprehension. Demands participation but does so in an unfair fashion (ticks off your name everytime you talk). Very enthusiastic, a very nice and approachable man. But there is too much reading that demands a lot of time.
WAY TOO MUCH READING! He expects you to read about 30 pages A DAY. Way way way too much unless this is your only class. The lectures suck its just him talking and he goes so fast your hands are cramping to write it all down. His exams are really tough and random. DONT DO IT!
Lectures were interesting, easy to follow and always had a clear thesis. Also very helpful with questions during and after class. Great Prof.!
Mr. Lee is a fantastic person, very helpful and engaging. We had incredible freedom when writing term papers which was fantastic. Depsite the excessive readings he was very understanding regarding work load etc.. I strongly suggest taking this course with Lee. he was awsome
I wouldn't recommend this professor due to the fact that he talks nonstop (I don't think he breathes) and he uses difficult vocab. when simple words would suffice. Also, this course costs a lot of money because you have to buy 4 books per term. I bought the books and didn't even read them. Not the hardest course but boring (bad TA's).
Talks incredibly fast. Having a laptop is almost a requirement to take notes. Course is intense and requires ridiculous amounts of dry reading. TAs were not that helpful but generous in terms of marking. Midterm and final are same format and not too difficult.
Enjoyable lectures, although he speaks quickly. A lot of readings but he tells you what will be on the exam, so you can get out of reading all 8 or 9 books. He's very good if you have questions; very knowledgeable. Good class.
Mr. Lee is a GREAT history teacher. People complain about him talking too much or too fast...why did you take his course then if you weren't interested? The fact that the class is an hour and a half long and I haven't once been bored is very impressive. He knows his stuff, is very clear, and he very generously gave me a 9 day extension on an exam!
A great prof, lectures are great, though sometimes boring. No textbook, but i think he expects us to read a bit too much novels though, like 100pgs a week, but its not like anyone ever does them though, just focus on 2 novels and u will be fine, I enjoyed this class because it is WORLD history, not just europe history
A great professor, he's inspired me to take HIST next year. Readings were painful but you don't have to read all of them. Great TA's as well!
The class is a little overwhelming sometimes, with a ton of information and an incredible amount of reading. But he is very interesting, and definitely knows his stuff. He also cares a lot about his students and does everything he can to help them succeed. Very available and happy to help outside class.
long reading list. interesting, but slightly rambly lectures. but maybe rambly is better than dry. very few assignments, ie. one research paper and final exam. overall good and recommended.
By far the best prof I had in my first year. It's so nice to have a prof who is so passionate about teaching. Lectures are intersting and he makes a point of making sure it's a world history class as opposed to European history.
Really helpful guy, and to be honest, lectures are SUPPOSED to be boring, but this guy makes them bearable and interesting. He goes fast, tho, and I had to use a laptop to keep up with what he was telling us. There was a lot of reading, but you only need to know 2 out of the 4 books per semester. It's university guys, not supposed to be easy.
Lee's class is interesting but he assigns tons of reading. I'm not complaining for no reason, he gives easily 200 pages a week. He is also a lazy prof who creates the course to burden himself with the least amount of work possible. Pretty easy marker though.
Great teacher, easy class. Essay topic was "write about anything". exam questions were given prior to exam. lots of reading, but most of it isn't necesary and it is easy to get an A without doing any of the reading. he moves fast, but is kind, friendly, helpful, very capbale, and definitly knows his stuff. will definately take more of his classes
He is very passionate about his teachings. His lectures are not boring at all I actually did not fall alseep. Haha He is really nice tho sometimes he lets the class leave early. Professor Lee's essay topics are very broad he lets you write about everything. Nonetheless, the readings that he assigns are very long 200 pgs a week.
he's a nice fellow and he really knows his stuff. but i have to agree he talks really fast and it's difficult to keep up on notes and process what he's saying. the readings were very difficult (loooong...150+pg/week) to get through, although it's true you don't have do do all of it. hated the TA tho, but that's not really the prof's fault.
I really enjoyed his class. My favourite lecturer in three years of univ. His lectures were always interesting and so long as you had a laptop, it was extremely easy to take good, solid notes. HOWEVER, he assigned 8 academic books, which were terrible (125+ pages a week to read). Bottom line: Lectures = amazing. Textbooks & Reading = terrible!!
TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU CAN!! I really loved him. He made class interesting and fun, (he did an entire lecture on The Beatles!) and while he does assign massive readings, I read about 1 out of the 8 books and i still got a B+. He gave extensions for both the papers and he really truly is a nice man who cares fo his students. would have him again.
Class topics were interesting & he treated each lecture as an essay (i.e. announced his thesis to the class & then proved it out loud). was not open to questions during lecture & often kept us late. essays (1/term) were easy (own topic) & 12 pages. go for the interesting lectures, as tutorials were a waste of time
Funny guy and good lecturer that keeps you engaged. He assigns way more supplementary reading than you'll ever get through though so use your time wisely and concentrate on a few books each term.
the class absoloutley loved him and for good reason! a very sweet man, lectures were simple (no powerpoint use, really) but straightforward, easy to understand and interesting. WAY too much readings assigned for a first year course though, and the majority of the books were dull and too specific.
The sweetest prof! Interesting, and a genuinely nice and engaging guy! Way too much reading - I barely read any of the books (way too long and congested) but still managed to pull off an A-. Overall, a reasonably good class.
His readings have nothing to do with the lectures and they are way too boring. If he is your TA he will expect you to attend the tutorials and talk, if you fail to do so, he will try to fail you (he threatens) and give you bad grades without providing reasons. Doesn't like the use of direct quotations. Avoid having him as a TA.
I was so excited to take 20th Century history and this class was a HUGE disappointment. His lectures are EXTREMELY boring and confusing. Even with a laptop it is hard to keep up with in class notes There are WAY to many books to buy that are expensive and boring. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
professor lee is pheraps the cutest and most jolliest prof i have ever had. hes just such a nice, sweet and cute man. I love him but his class may not be the most fun. It is kinda boring with lots and lots of notes( 10 pages at times) However, tests are easy so if u jsut study a bit you will do good.
Waay too much reading, 100+ pages a week and you can't even sell the books back afterwards! But his exam is easy and he gives you all the questions beforehand.
WAYYYYYYYY too many readings. over 100 pages a week. you have to do the readings for the exam but really not worth much at all in the end. the readings are very boring and such a waste of time. LOTS OF TIME! lectures are all right but try a different prof, really..
Professor Lee is consistently jolly and he really loves his job. With that being said, the textbooks were a waste of money and the global content isn't particularly the most fascinating.
Professor Lee is one of the nicest professors in UBC! The lecture materials can be a bit dull unless you're really into world history but he tries to make it interesting. The only downside would be the required readings, most students in the class found them to be too difficult for a 100 level course. Otherwise excellent prof!=)
Way too many readings.........And ya, I think you need a lot of time if you wanna do well in his class. He is nice, but..well.. its hard
Okay, So, You can tell that dr. Lee is really knowledgeable on the subject, but seeing as his class is called 20th century global history, you would expect him to talk about both WWI and WWII, which he completely bypassed. The entire class was pretty much on global economy. Unless you are interested in that, don`t take this course.
Professor Lee has an old-school lecture style. He gives eloquent talks on the material & doesn't rely on slide notes. His classes are valuable because they teach you how to flesh out important questions & evidence, without spoon-feeding it. He also loves to extend his papers & gives fair exams. 1 paper /term, no midterms, allows 4 absent tutorials.
Professor Lee is truly passionate about history and wants to share it with his students! he's a very nice guy and very very helpful during office hours. The readings are quite a bit, but once you do them it's not so hard.
Reasonable class. However his lectures cannot be tolerated: unless you can stand long abstract lectures, you will be fighting to stay awake and interested.
Well. Take HIST 103 if you have a passion about the development of the Global Economy. You don't really learn about History. Capitalist-Led Globalization should be the real title of the course. The lectures are really dry. Powerpoints are useless. You'll do well if you're passionate or if you have previous knowledge. Otherwise, don't bother.
Extremely jam-packed lectures. Have to be writing notes the entire class non-stop. Be ready to write a lot. Made really interesting topics boring. Not that hard to get a good mark if you read the books given and have the right TA.
He is a great prof! He is truly passionate about what he teaches. He doesn't use powerpoint slides often, so be prepared to write down what he says. But this helps with actually paying attention/memorizing what is going on. There was 1 comparative book review per term and they were both decent.
Great guy. Very knowledgeable and a pleasure to listen to.
Doctor Lee is a very entertaining professor, even teaching such a boring topic. He knows what he is doing and is very enthusiastic and effective. Tests and assignments are not difficult and there are plenty of opportunities to ask for assistance. To reward attendance he will go over the homework assignment in class and give the answers!
Waaaaay too much reading for a first year class.
There's a lot of reading, but Lee's passion for the subject is evident and his enthusiasm is contagious. He is also a huge beatles fan and handed out his old records one time for a lecture about them, haha. You won't get through this class with passive indifference, but if you put in the effort it's easy to do well.
Professor Lee is a great Prof. You do have to do the readings and take notes on them to be successful in discussion. The class is very lecture heavy The content itself is not difficult, and is straightforward. Unfortunately, the course has very little that makes up your grade: 2 exams, 2 papers and participation. But he gives you exam questions.
Professor Lee has great lectures but is very heavy to grasp and take down. He is very helpful when it comes to assignments and also gives away questions before the final exam. Overall, it is definetly worth taking to boost your grade or be more comfortable with a lot of other classes in terms of sitting finals.
Lee is obviously in love with history, but he seems to only focus on his interests, rather than the broader topic of the course. Nice enough guy, seems pretty understanding. Biggest complaint: Gives enormous readings, expects upwards of 80 pages read a week, which is a lot for a first year class. Readings are also oftentimes not relevant also.
I really enjoyed prof Lee's class. His lectures were 2 straight hours of him talking but made it interesting. Would 100% recommend bringing a computer to type his notes because he goes fast. The readings he assigns are huge but if you skim and answer the questions youll be fine. Try to get him as your TA for tutorials if you can. No textbook used.
Professor Lee was really approachable and understanding, he always had a smile on his face. His papers were long (10-12 pages) for a first year course but he gives you lots of resources and tips. After being in HIST103 with him for a whole year, I just got he sense he was a really kind and understanding person.
AMAZING professor! By far one of the best profs I've had at UBC! Incredibly knowledgeable and caring, he clearly cares for his students! As long as you put in adequate work in Hist 103, you'll do well!
Amazing guy, very knowledgeable and great at answering questions. He assigns hugeeee readings but just try to skim through and get enough info to grasp the concept and answer questions- you'll be happy when the exam comes by. Very passionate, very pleasant!!
It was such a pleasure to be in Dr Lee's class! He is an amazing scholar who shows passion for the subject matter. The readings were all very interesting, and linked well to the lectures. And HE GIVES THE EXAM ESSAY QUESTIONS beforehand! If you had to choose bw Dr Lee and Dr Peterson (Also teaching 103) CHOOSE DR LEE. YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!
Wonderful professor and person!! No textbook, all the testable content is from assigned readings and lectures (which are super engaging!) and provides a very specific exam study guide with the essay questions. Very kind and makes time to help individual students with their papers. I will be taking more History courses just because of Dr. Lee! :)
Dr Lee is by far the most amazing professor I've had at UBC. Although the lectures can be quite dry, he genuinely cares so much about his students success. Don't be afraid to ask him questions or for help, he will do anything to make sure you are ready for the exam. Plus he gives the exam questions before hand! Dr Lee is the way to go.
Such a good teacher and such a saint. He clearly outlines what subjects out of what you learned will be on the exams. Puts in a lot of work to actually really interesting lectures that I'd really recommend going to (includes one on the Beatles group). He definitely knows what he's talking about and this was probably my favorite class. Worth it!
Class has no textbook, so be sure to take good notes (which is easy, cause he lectures at a great pace and shows a lecture outline) and do the readings! Dr. Lee is incredibly kind and will take the time to help you choose books for the book reviews (there are 2- 1 per term). His course is a great survey of the 20th cent, and you'll def learn a lot!
Amazing prof. I strongly recommend you to try getting into the tutorial section he TAs himself (it makes a significant difference in the course experience).
Dr. Lee is an amazing lecturer and professor. I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He is open to meeting with students so you can bounce ideas off of him. I cannot recommend Dr Lee enough! He is amazing... I just wish he taught more courses!!!!!
Lectures and readings were a bit dry, but you really do learn so much. I absolutely recommend attending his office hours and just chat to him about anything - doing so makes your experience in this class so much easier, but he's also such a nice guy! Like, genuinely. Your entire grade basically rests on a lot of writing/reading though. Be warned.
An amazing prof!! I couldn't recommend him more. Always happy to meet in 'office hours' and has a clear and easy-to-follow lecture style. Really, take Prof Lee's class!! You won't regret it at all!!
Professor Lee is the best! He is clear at the start of the semester about what is expected and keeps the format of class consistent. He gave a 3 week extension on our term paper too :) The weekly readings were overly long and boring, along with the discussion sections. Regardless, you really learn so much! Take this class!
Great professor but beware 20% of your grade is tutorial participation. Better hope you have a TA that has a rubric, unlike Sean James who just quotes the syllabus and subjectively decides who gets a better grade. Even if you participate in discussions you wont get an extraordinary grade. expect a 70 to 75.
This course was very difficult yet so intellectually enriching. Even though most people complained about the heavy workload and weekly assigned readings, no one could deny that Dr. Lee is an exceptional professor. His lectures were great, super dense but you get used to them. He also helped me pick my books for my essays which was really helpful!
Hands down the best professor I have had at UBC. His enthusiasm and the design of his lectures motivated me to keep reading and participating all throughout the semester.
Really great lectures, there is a lot of reading and writing.
Get ready to read approximately 60-100 pages a week in addition to ~5-7 books per assignment + primary sources. Grading criteria is a bit harsh so if you're not a history major, be aware. Assignment details are also incredibly vague and do not follow any rubric/template/guidelines. Participation also weighs heavy. Wouldn't take again though.
Brutally dry lessons and way too much reading. All for what? None of the weekly readings are designed to help you prosper with your assignments, which makes up 70% of your grade. Avoid him at all costs for seminars. Vague instructions, vague grading criteria, and expects you to read around 10-20 books+ just for one assignment.
Professor Lee is very passionate about this course's content, making it engaging and interesting. Each semester you are graded by a final exam, a paper and participation, which are each worth an even amount. The only downside is grading depends on your TA, and some mark way harder than others. Overall great professor and a great course.
Grading criteria for the comparative book review was extremely vague and largely depends on your TA. I highly recommend going to TA's office hours. 1 book review per term which is due right before finals so don't expect to get any feedback before term 1 exam. The only good thing about his course is that he gives out exam questions beforehand.
Very fair, your grade is based on your effort, very sweet prof, show up to discussion sections, and work hard on the essay.
Dr lee had amazing lectures! The notes he posts on canvas only covers a fraction of what he talks about so make sure to go every week to take notes. Comparative book review has very vague criteria so consult your TA and ask what they expect. The final exam questions are given prior but they take a long time to prepare for. Make sure to do readings!
Amazing human and professor! Really fun and comprehensive lectures- I especially enjoyed his Beatles lecture! Fair warning, readings are quite long for a 100-level class, and the exam length of multiple essay Q's is a bit of a pain, but the professor's attitude and general vibe make up for it. Would recommend!
His class was really very boring and made people feel sleepy. Moreover, he had promised during the Office Hour to write a recommendation letter for me to apply for graduate school. However, when I went to see him later, he immediately changed his mind and claimed that he had never made such a promise to me.
