A great teacher, is very passionate about what he teaches. Uses a variety of teaching methods besides lecture, including video and powerpoint along with student presentations. Does not lecture out of the Textbook which is great.
I love this class. He makes me think in this class, but he makes it interesting so i dont mind it at all. Would recommend taking his class!!
Pretty Much the best Dang teacher ever! His class is the rocks. The first day he'll weed out idiots then after that his classes are soo interesting. You'll learn so much with the right attitude. I would take him for every history class if I could! He's way awesome!

I took this class on line. It is confusing until you fiqure out the format. The 'discussions' are really just posts so don't bother with a reply.
Took this clas online and it was not too hard. He is a good perof and is really into what he teaches. It was tought to get an idea of what he was all about because I never really heard him. Great class and good guy.
Great professor! Would recommend to anyone :)
Great teacher! Learned a lot, got new perspectives on different historical events. Interesting lectures. Assignments done online, based on reading from the text, info posted on WebCT, historical articles, and student power points. Tests were essay type, but possible test questions were given in the syllabus so you know what to focus on.
Amazing passionate teacher.. If you need this class take him. Different teaching style but makes class interesting.
Once a week class. Three hours long. All lecture. Mostly his opinions and life experiences. He's very into the subject, but gives little factual material. Essay midterm. Essay final, plus another essay cumulative final. If your opinionated, you'll be fine. Accepts late work, won't fail anyone. Won't let you leave early either.
Good guy and passionate about history and teaching it. That being said, I couldn't stand to stay in the class as it seems all he has to teach is anti-US rhetoric and any views that aren't shared by him (i.e. leftist) are wrong. Furthermore, I can't respect a teacher (and a history teacher, no less) that cannot use proper grammar.
This class is extremely easy. Easy assignments and easy tests. He has 3 tests, made up of one essay question. But I do not recommend anyone take his class. He is extremely unorganized and that really stressed me out. His lectures are also boring and useless. He gives you the essays that will be on the test, so there is no point to his lectures.
WORST Teacher I Have EVER Had. His Class Is So BORING. His Lectures SUCK. He Has Three Essay Exams And He SUCKS At GRADING. If You Do Not Write It Exactly The Way He Would, You Pretty Much Get Anywhere From An C-F. Do Not Take His Class.
I read a few other reviews on here about Lurenz that stated he only teaches his personal experiences and leftist opinions. First of all I?m pretty sure he?s a Republican, and second, he only adds his personal experiences to show that history is relative to our lives and adds the disclaimer that they are just his opinions not fact.
I didn't think he was too bad until he started grading stuff. Everything you urn is is written. He says he wants to teach "critical thinking," but really he just wants to hear what he's thinking. Unless you can write the perfect essay everytime (even though he can't) don't take his class.
he is great! just take good notes on his lectures, study and you will do great. his makes everything crystal clear and doesnt require you to remember a million dates of when events happened. he truely loves history and made it easy to learn
Best professor I have ever had! If you're interested in history, you have to take a class with Prof. Lurenz. He is really cares about what he is teaching. The work is easy, and there are only two tests. The rest is actually LEARNING about history. He is an amazing teacher. I highly recommend him to anyone who loves history and wants to learn.
Took the class as an online class and it was wonderful!! The teacher was very helpful for a internet class. LOTS OF READING!! You have to keep up if your taking it online!

Took it online and passed with an A. Well organized webct, post discussions, powerpoint project, no homework, and open book tests.
if your gonna be a teacher, (so you can see how its really done) like history (and want to learn from a passionate expert) take any of his classes. unless, your lazy and just want to get by! he is the best teacher ive ever met. HANDS DOWN. youll benefit in every way from his class and his wisdom. GUARANTEED
Seriously the best teacher I have ever had! Don't listen to the people on here saying that he is unclear, he has stayed 30min. after class with me helping me understand. Don't listen when they say the only view he accepts is his, I have disagreed with him countless times and still got full points take him! He will actually make history come alive!
very cool teacher he truley enjoys teaching history are thier dry spots yes but its just part of learning history. i did enjoy his class and he was always willing to work with fellow students.
I took this class online and although I was doing all the work and going above and beyond the syllabus expectations, I was continually marked down, sometime into the "C" area. After reading some of the other comments it makes sense concerning his attitude and viewpoints. Really a disappointing teacher and class.
Prof. Lurenz is a great (but opinionated) teacher. I took his quick paced class and it was a lot of work but I did fine. We used a book he wrote so it's hard to critize his wokr or disagree with him. Fair grading and you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. Overall, great teacher!
Professor Lurenz is the best! Very understandable and not a difficult class if you have your textbook. He's always around to answer any of your questions. I took an 8 week online class with him, and I wasn't overwhelmed with the workload at all. I'd recommend his online HIS103 class very much!
He is very passionate about history and made it fun. You have to keep up with assignments, but you do the work and you will succeed. YOu have to check the assignment board OFTEN, and keep up. He made history come alive! If I had to continue with history classes, I would take only his classes.
He is very passionate about what he teaches. KEEP UP with all your assignments! He doesn't explain due dates well...I missed the first 4, so stay alert and check WebCT-OFTEN. He isn't my favorite teacher but at least he treats you like an adult if you act like one.
I bit unclear on assignments and due dates. Not much homework throughout the semester but you must write a paper in class for exams and they are a pain. I get my exam back and have points marked off, not told for what. I guess it's just his discretion. Anyway, you better take good notes.
I like his style of teaching. he is a good lecturer and keeps me engaged and eager to learn. His class is fairly easy to follow and he doesn't give you so much work you are stressed to the gills.
I have him for his 104 and his class is awesome he clearly goes over everything and post power points online in web ct so you really don't have to take notes the only draw back is the group assignments but that's if you have a lazy group member
ACADEMIC professor! He has a great passion and he challenges the way you look at history according to your past information I recommend ANY of his classes to everyone! One of the best professors around!
This was easily my favorite class this semester. He loves what he teaches and knows what he is talking about. Just make sure to keep up with assignments on your own. It is not his job to remind you. I would take his class again in a second.
I loved his class. Although the tests were tough, I believe I learned more in his class than in any other history class I've taken. Be prepared for a lot of note taking, that's the vast majority of this class. If you take good notes, you'll have no problem on the tests though. Loved his class, and hope to take another next semester!
He is the best teacher I have ever had!
I had Professor Lurenz in 1987-89, when he taught in Henderson, NV, at the CCCC campus. Awesome, dedicated, and very professional. He was the best instructor I ever had. Glad to see he is still teaching. I am still using some of the knowledge he taught me years ago. I still think of him from time to time. Keep up the good work, Steve!!!!!!
I love Professor Lurenz, he's awesome, loves what he does, and adores history. I'm a history major and he is my best advisor. the group stuff is not great, you have to do all your own work. if you want to learn real history you will love his class too.
Professor Lurenz loves history and loves teaching it. If you show up to class everyday and do all the study sheets, as well as all the homework assignments, you will be fine. I got an A.
The class mostly consists of discussion board posts and online quizzes. You'll be expected to do a lot of writing and independent research. Audio or video lectures would have enhanced the classes. Overall a good choice for MCC. Very helpful in offering suggestions via e-mail.
Doesn't communicate well with you and hardly responds to emails. More focused on being heard than teaching. He gives no feedback so be prepared to do it all wrong and get penalized for it even if you have asked for help. Don't take this class unless you like failing and not learning anything.
Prof. Lurenz,is pretty confusing. All he does is lecture the entire class period,& much of it is immaterial banter. He's an incredibly hard grader&like someone else has said-prepare to do all wrong because you don't really know what's "right".Also, all tests are written & extremely hard. Don't take him, basically he made me rethink my history major:(
I have taken Prof L for both of my U.S. History classes. I really like his teaching style because he lectures. You need to critically think in his class. Loves history and loves talking about it. He is tough, so you need to show up and pay attention. Do the work, do the homework, pay attention, and you will get an A. I highly recommend.
Class challenged me to look openly at history. Class is not your timeline history, prof. gives an understanding and relationship to our world. Useful information that I can use. However his standards are high, exams tough but if you show up, do the work and have an open mind you will do well!
I read a lot of what people wrote about Steve Lurenz. I have taken 4 of his classes. Yes the course is tough, especially the Exams. However, if you pay attention in class, attend frequently and study, passing is a synch. Don't over think things and participate in discussions. I did, I passed, and became one of his favorite students and a HIS major.
Awesome Professor! Really has a passion for the subject. Has an unbiased view on History and teaches you the truth not the subscribed truth Class work is graded hard he says he does not give out 100 on test and it is true He lectures the entire class but the lectures are not boring If you want to improve yourself as a student this is the Professor
Lurenz is an amazing teacher he really knows what he is talking about and is willing to discuss anything with the students about what is happening around the world and how it is related to what we are studying! He works with you if you ask for help and will explain the same thing a few times if needed.
For me it was a tough class, especially cramming 16 weeks into 8 during the summer, on-line. But with the critical thinking requirements for journals, research projects, posts, etc. he gives opportunities for redemption. A different, interesting way to experience American History. His passion for the subject certainly shows :)
SO confusing. He's really into his subject from what I could tell, but terrible at communicating what he wants. Also, he expected students to know his (unpredictable) criteria without stating them, and called us out for doing what he never told us NOT to do... His notes and instructions were muddled and frustrating.
Wow learned plenty about the Vietnam conflict. Enjoyed Prof. Lurenz insight into his generation. Did not hold anything back. Projects were interesting and learned a lot from them. If your looking for a class that tells you what to think and write not for you! His feedback is to make you think. Take the class very informative!
Great Professor!
Professor Lurenz tells you exactly what you need to do in order to get the grade you want. He is very passionate for history which I feel like this made the class more interesting. He makes you look at history in different ways and wants you to be successful. There's quite a bit of essays, but make sure to back up your argument and you'll be fine.
Prof Lurenz is great, lectures can be very long winded, but he will warn you of that on day one. Expect a lot of small assignments throughout the course that are done online. Almost all of the course work is done on Canvas really outside of the midterm and final exam. The midterm and final exam were in my opinion hard.
Expect to write. A lot. Not very clear grading criteria.
Professor Lurenz is amazing! I took his HIS111 in person, and it was a great easy class to take. He is understanding, funny, and really cares about his students. His online classes are much harder, expect to read and write a lot. Quick tip: get ahead of homework and this class wont be so bad. He replies to emails quickly. I suggest taking in person
Do not take his online class! He has you do a ridiculous amount of writing!
This was definitely not an easy class, but what can you expect from online history but to read a ton? Steven Lurenz is an entertaining and caring instructor. If you show him effort, he will be understanding. He asks a lot from his students but he is clear and consise about what he wants, gives great feedback, and super responsive. Great challenge!
Wonderful professor. I loved taking his class. He lectures always but he provides very interesting information and shares it in an entertaining and easy to understand way. Learned a lot.
He gives great lectures but there are several writing assignments. He also gives great feedback. On work and since it's a summer class, he grades quickly.
I took this History of England course, I love the topic and I enjoyed the class but it was too much work for me at the time. I would constantly be having to do homework and I would never have a day to relax as I was also working 40 hours.
Strange grading criteria that looks like he made it up right before class started. Took his online class for history and it was not a good idea. I worked in that class more than I ever would in normal class. Expects perfection in all essays and doesn't hold true to his own grading rubric half the time. Has poor grammar, even. Don't recommend.
I'm not gonna lie, I had to work for my grade. While the assignments aren't hard, you definitely have to put work into it, and there are quite a lot of them. Surprisingly, this class has quickly become my best grade. I really do feel like I've grown as a student through his class, and he really is a kind man who wants you to succeed!
Lurenz was a really solid choice for a history professor and really made you work for your grade. Be ready for a lot of essays and doing a lot of critical thinking work with Lurenz. He gives amazing lectures, though his grading criteria was not too clear, I still think he's a great professor who is really passionate about his work.
His exams are essay style. He is passionate, but never very specific on what he's looking for in assignments. Very old school and definitely makes you work for your grade. Had he been less vague about his assignments he would've been a great choice.
I became a better thinker and writer after his class. I loved the academic freedom without the hand holding when submitting assignments and discussing concepts in class. If you need to be told what to do and a rubrics not the class for you! This is a college level class.
Prof. Lurenz really cares about history and all its aspects. This course was a 16-week online. There is a lot of work, its not easy but rewarding. lots of critical reading and thinking.
Steven Lurenz cares a lot about the classes he teaches and is forgiving on late work! He will take off some points but at least you can turn things in late. For my History of England class you had about 3-4 short essays or repsonses due every Thursday or Sunday and it was not that bad. Just keep up and don't procrastinate.
Good class and good professor overall, however VERY tough grader on thinking critically and will not give a good grade if it is not detailed enough to his liking. After an entire semester I still can not seem to figure out what exactly he is looking for to get a 100 on an assignment.
He is very passionate about the subject and enjoys what he does. He is a very strict grader when it comes to critical thinking and detail. Its almost impossible to get a perfect score on assignments, but he is very lenient when it comes to late work. The textbook helped with the online quizzes but not much else, rely on the presentations provided.
Prof. Lurenz is the perfect example of a prof. who wants to show his class what HE knows. He will ask specific, thought provoking questions about a time period, and expect you to draw parallels about historic events you haven't even learned yet. If you don't throw in that "you know SOO much more than what the book teachers", expect to fail.
I took his summer class (5 weeks), and it was pretty easy! I took it with 2 other summer classes. All we had to do was two discussion posts every week with 2 quizzes. Has a minimum of 350 words for your post, and 200 words for replies. Quizzes are about the chapters. Textbook was $10, I didn't use it. Grades fast. I never got full score tho lol
I took this class during the summer so it was condensed into five weeks. The quizzes are online and they are textbook based. Prof Lurenz's insights on historical events were very interesting and definitely changed my perspective. He is more than willing to work with you outside of class and he clearly wants his students to do well.
He is very willing to meet with you and break something down if youre not understanding. Hes very understanding and actually cares about his students. I would take his class again, hes a teacher everyone needs Forsure.
Great instructor he cares about his students. Emailed him asking him why I got a bad grade on an assignment and he was more than willingly able to help bring my grade back up. 2 discussion posts a week must go above and beyond for A/100 Im talking in the 1000 word count. Quizzes can be found on line quizlet. Would take again learned a ton.
My biggest problem with this professor is that he expects Harvard-level work out of community college students. Simply put, he is the epitome of a tough grader. Dont expect an easy A unless you are overly academically-inclined, and an exceptional writer. However, the course load is surprisingly reasonable, and the curriculum is straightforward.
Best teacher I have had in a while hands down. HIS 108 class is not an easy A, but if you are truly wanting to learn this is the class for you !! I would totally recommend him, he is very understanding and has a lot of knowledge to share. Absolutely loved loved his class. There is a book requirement but they are both under $10 each on amazon.
I am finishing my last semester at a university, I took this class because it wasn't currently offered at my university. This professor does not give clear assignment expectations in a single location--instead, you have to search through all pages in the Canvas shell (graded comments, announcements, etc) making it difficult to find requirements.
Professor Lurenz is very passionate about the subjects he teaches. There is not a lot of homework, but it is all writing and most assignments must be at least 3 large paragraphs. Overall, he is a great teacher and I would take again.
One of the best professors I have ever had. Is very clear and concise and a hold no bars kind of guy. Does not take excuses for issues that can be avoided such as late work. Do not tell him the sob story, just get the work in and you will be on his good side. Genuinely passionate about history as well as plays a good devils advocate.
This is a wonderful class and Professor Lurenz does a great job structuring the material so that it is easy to focus on a particular time period, but will also build on the previous lessons in the class. He is always available and gives good feedback. There is a lot of writing and research, but it is a history course and that should be expected.
Prof. Lurenz was hands down my favorite teacher. The lectures are long and fun (if you like real history), he doesn't sugar coat it or go with the PC - make people happy/entitled rewritten version. His passion is history. Be prepared to write essays, they're not fun but he gives great feedback and encouragement. The best part is the class itself
He's a very solid teacher and isn't afraid to tell you how it is. He will 100% make you work for every single grade you get. He isn't very clear on the requirements for assignments because he wants you to think outside the box and give him something very original. He gives very good feedback.
I have never had a professor so bad about answering emails, or messages. He also DOES NOT answer correctly. I do not even know what my final grade was because he forgot to put in my second part of my final and tried messaging him with no response and the class taken out of canvas... Do NOT take his class!!!!
bad prompts and not specifying what to do, also uses inbox and anouncements for what to do for some assignments. many grammar and spelling mistakes in canvas.
I put forth a lot of work in his class. Although it was honors, I feel he graded super harshly with little to no direct feedback. His comments on my assignments were a copy and paste comment he sent directed to the whole class. The content was interesting, but honestly I wouldn't take his class again or recommend him as a professor.
