Professor is great! He is new and gets a little stuck on lectures, but all in all he makes class very interesting and fun! There are 2 midterms a final and 5 small papers.
Well pretty new teacher and not so great though, yet. But he is getting better with each lecture.Very funny and ofcourse, very good looking.Lectures are kind of abstract though and very tough examination. But he will be improving with time, I am sure.If you like challenges, you be fine.
I would strongly recommend taking this class with any other instructor. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Thought this very green teacher means well, he truly is in over his head. This is his second semester teaching at SJSU and if you care at all about your sanity or grade you will consider my warning.
he knows the material himself, but teaching it is not his strongest point. hes willing to help but you will feel very very confused.
A MUST NOTTTT TAKE! this guy is very new. lectures don't make sense. so many power point slides and very poor teaching quality. he gets stuck in lectures and confuse the hell out of u. not only he gives hard tests but he's a tough grader on papers too. if u are a hard worker and care for ur grade DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
He confuses himself and his students...and his examples in class don't ever go as planned. Pathetic....
Really new prof. Will try his damndest to help you, but usually ends up making matters worse. Hasn't realized yet that it's an undergrad class and we don't have any background in cognition, so he needs to dumb it down for us. Would probably make sense to grad students or other absent-minded geniuses like himself
A refreshing, enthusiastic, very entertaining professor. Knows the material well and is passionate about it. Creative and really engages the class, using demos, discussions, and colorful examples. Yes, his lectures aren?t as clear or organized as they could be. But he?s improving, and is well worth taking! He made class fun, and I learned a lot.
I thought he was great! He can be very entertaining, and tries hard to teach his students. He is a new teacher and a nice guy. He must be getting a lot better, because I didn't feel that confused, even though, yeah, he is brilliant. He was very helpful in office hours and email.
This class was not that difficult at all and was kind of interesting. All material on tests is straight from the textbook so if you really study the chapters well, the tests are easy. In the end, I got an A but I had to really study the textbook well!!
Man! This class was hard! I never took a psychology class before but it was a very interesting, fun experience. The professor was very funny and was interested in what he was teaching. However, the class was taught like an upper division class even though it was an intro class so concepts were hard to understand unless the book was read thoroughly.
Dr. Macramalla is a good spirited but absent-minded professor. He uses class time to "re-do" WHOLE lectures that he feels that he explained poorly, and does it frequently. He loses students' assignments and can't answer Q's. Lectures have nothing to do with exams. He makes lots of jokes, but nobody is paying attention since lectures don't matter.
I visited Prof Macramalla in office hours and asked questions in class, and always had them answered. He was very helpful. You do need to study because it is difficult course material. I appreciated the lengths he went to to make sure we understood it all. Fascinating class.
I learned a lot in this class. It was good and Prof Macramalla made it fun. He has a great sense of humor. He knows a lot about a lot of stuff and sometimes he can go off on tangents. Visits to office hours clarified it all for me when I wasn't sure. Also, I see more now about why people do things. Thanks!
Profesor Macramalla is a very interesting teacher, and keeps his lectures fun and interesting. The only thing is his class is based only on 3 tests, plus the final. So, you better read the book and study hard...
This was a great class. Learned a lot. Went to class every day. Prof very entertaining, knowledgable, fair, and makes it fun. No complaints.
I like Dr. M. as a person but not as a professor. Lectures go all over the place & are confusing. Don't bother taking notes during them. Get the book & read that, it's all you need to pass the exams. Grade is based on four exams, has options for extra credit. He forgets to mention important things like experiment hours or 1500 word requirements.
He's a new stats teacher, but that is NO excuse for his teaching style. He is very unclear and unsure of the problems himself. He tends to skip over the equations in class if he doesn't understand them! Everything is self-taught from the textbook, which is a mediocre resource! He gives out a study guide though, so diligently go over it!
I am currently taking Statistics 95 with Professor Macramalla. However, his his lectures are all over the place. The homework is ridiculously confusing. When asking questions, I get even more confused. The tests are really hard as well. I don't feel like I'm learning much of anything in this class at the moment. It's too confusing.
It is really hard to understand Prof MacRamalla. Stats 95 is hard enough as it is, and he confuses the topic by his unorganized lectures. He is really unapproachable because when asking questions in class, he responds and makes me feel stupid. Even at office hours, he seems irritated when asked questions.
You have to study for stats. Stats is a hard class, maybe the hardest in the department. That being said, I studied, I went to office hours when I wasn't sure about something, and I did fine. Use the study guide--it has all the questions on it. I think Dr. M was having a hard time with the death in his family this quarter, but I enjoyed the class.
The prof rocked. He's funny and keeps you entertained and learning. The class was fascinating. I never got bored. I learned more than I thought I would. Tests were straightforward and forced you to study, which I need sometimes. Made me want to major in psych.
I didn't enjoy this class. His lectures were ALL over the place and often times he didn't even know what he was saying. The best way to pass this class and get a good grade is to complete every study guide and do well on the exams. Thats it. Class is not necessary to attend at all.
He had a very difficult time teaching the subject. I had a low understanding of everything and had to refer to the book for everything and still he would confuse me.
Professor Macramalla is one of those types of people who you'd rather know as a person than a teacher. He is a hot version of Jeff Goldbloom, but his teaching can be a little all over the place. He offers helpful study guides though and i think he is starting to get the hang of things, as he seems to be fairly new to teaching.
Has a hard time saying what he's thinking. For stats, make already complicated topics MUCH more complicated then they should be. I relied 90% on the text which got me an A-. I'll cut him some slack since he said it was his first time teaching stats, which is a very difficult topic anyways
Do not expect to have emails returned even regarding important matters. Lectures are irrelevant and confusing. He tends to make matters worse by belittling students when they do not understand his nonsense. Find a professor that is competent and reliable if you want to stand a chance in stats.
I got the grade I deserved in this class. Went to office hours, he always answered my emails quickly, and was responsive to questions in class, treated us with respect, good sense of humor. Stats is a hard class; be prepared for challenging material. Good prof.
When trying to teach he confuses himself which confuses everyone else. I learned more from the textbook than from him. He makes things more confusing than they have to be. Glad I took this class in high school otherwise I would have failed. Stats just isn't his subject to teach. He's nice though and kind of funny.
Super easy. No need to attend class. Lecture is powerpoint based and is posted online. Gives study guides with exact questions that will be on the exams. Take for an easy A.
Stats is a hard class; be prepared to study a lot outside of class. I enjoyed his sense of humor and it was clear he is concerned how you are doing. Visit office hours and study with other students. Responded to email questions quickly even late at night. There is no way you can get by without the textbook. You will learn stats.
Very quirky and comical but it gets old quick. His lectures are not relative to any of his exams. Memorize questions and answers from his study guides and you'll get an easy A. Ironically is a harsh grader when it comes to papers. He needs to sleep more-- most of the time I felt like he didn't want to be there. Main point: this class was a joke.
A joint lecturer with San Jose State University and Santa Clara University, he teaches psychology at SCU. He doesn't seem too knowledgeable about this subject at all, often saying "I'll let your textbook do it's work here" or "I'm not sure what to tell you guys here". Lectures are boring and powerpoint based, and tests are ironically very detailed.
Very funny guy, very bright and sometimes trips over his own words, yeah, but I got the grade I deserved and had an enjoyable time in class. Very helpful in office hours and via email. Exams are university level; get over it.
He has a lot of funny impressions and accents. As long as you're giving effort and go to his office hours and go to class you can pass this class. It is a LOT of work! There are 3 tests and 3 homework and he offers extra credit. DO the EC! powerpoints online but not helpful. follow the book! he always gives questions to exam as the study guide
He is easy and you should be fine if you attend tutoring. He gave a take home midterm because half of the class did not understand what was going on.
boring, confusing, doesn't seem to care whether students learn or not. gives a study guide that is pretty much the exam. I didn't learn anything in the class and that's too bad. Relatively easy but do not expect to learn anything.
LET'S JUST SAY HE DOESN'T PUT EFFORT IN TEACHING. YOU WON'T LEARN ANYTHING IN HIS CLASS. YOU MIGHT END UP WITH AN A BECAUSE HIS STUDY GUIDES ARE THE EXACT QUESTIONS FROM THE EXAM, BUT THE STUDY GUIDES ARE TEDIOUS TO DO!OVERALL YOUR ON YOUR OWN FOLLOWING THE TEXTBOOK, AND WON'T LEARN ANYTHING
He is a funny teacher, but he goes off topic a lot and easily. However, if you want to take an easy class and get good grades, take him. Just memorize the study guide he gives you, you will get an A on the test :)
Overall a good teacher, knows his stuff, for the most part. Like another comment said, his specific brand of comedy gets old fast. If you like Psych, take him. If you dislike it, don"t.
Steve is a great guy who genuinely wants you to learn the material.I found the course relatively easy and only attended half the lectures. However, I know other students who didn't fair so well. Make sure to READ the book! Lectures can be confusing..but don't stress!
He is very confusing and disorganized. He does not do a very good job at helping out when a topic is confusing. The material is pretty interesting.
Disorganized, doesn't keep class engaged(half walk out while he's still lecturing). Exams are directly from study guide/have to tediously find answers in book. Completely ignored me for 20 minutes during my scheduled appt. Brief, confusing responses to emails. Contradictory instructions on term paper. Doesn't care if you learn but he's brilliant.
This class is probably the easiest you'll take at SJSU with tests provided directly from a study guide and a straight forward paper that is graded leniently plus a presentation on the paper. Brilliant professors like him have so many ideas that they have a hard time teaching so if you can handle that take him.
I am the worst at math ever and I got a B+ in this class. I never went to class and I just made up numbers for the passfail homework assignments. I did terrible on all the tests and still somehow ended up with a B. Super easy class. His lectures are not good and he is confusing. However, he is very hot.
I enjoyed this class, his sense of humor, and I did do all the reading. If you do your part (read, study), you will do fine. He was very helpful in office hours when there were things I didn't understand, and he responds fast to emails.
Professor Macramalla is a very intelligent man. He knows his stuff! almost too well. I found it hard for me to follow what he was talking about. I had no background of the subject going in, and i struggled. It is doable, just take notes ask a lot of questions. He is a great professor,i just found that his teaching technique clashed with how i learn
He is very knowledgeable and passionate about his field. His teaching skills are less than average. It's not easy to follow along and understand what he's talking about because he's lectures as if we have prior knowledge of the dense material. He is HILARIOUS and a long lecture entertaining but as far as understanding the material it was a miss.
Probably the worst professor I have ever experienced. Rarely provides a clear method on answering any questions he posts. He jumps around his lectures too much so it's easy to get lost. His slideshows are unhelpful. He has the most awkward humor. I attended class everyday and still did not understand what was even going on.
Unorganized and doesn't seem to care much about student's participation. Not a difficult class, but he's not helpful and you don't learn much.
You'll have to teach yourself for part of the class because he isn't the best at explaining everything. Can't find the right words most of the time and says "um" a lot when lecturing.
Lectures aren't mandatory at all. He's very confusing but if you really REALLY pay attention you'll get it. Literally I was lost half the time so I didn't bother going to his lectures. His exams are DIRECTLY from his study guides. Curved grade. I wouldn't recommend taking him to be honest.
MacRamalla is very passionate about teaching, but he has difficulty conveying the information to you. Tutoring is available, and I would definitely recommend it. I don't know how people didn't show up to class and still passed because I felt absolutely lost when I missed a single day. Just show up to class, pay attention, and go to tutoring.
He was all over the place throughout the semester! You pratically have to read the chapters and then go to class in order to really understand what hes talking about. Tests are easy since he chose 30 questions randomly from study guides. I was glad to meet a group of people to study stats with and do hw together which made this class easier.
He's from Canada--higher academic standards there. Stats is always a hard class and not what I'm into, but he is hilarious, entertaining, and it's obvious he cares about us learning. I visited office hours and he responded to email quickly, and that really helped me. Study the study guide, do the homework and reading, and you will do fine.
I took him during summer class, the lectures are obviously long and boring. The study guides are there, but he doesn't use the questions from the study guide. So you basically have to study the book too! He is really tough grader for the presentation and paper, so beware.
This man is a genius. Professors this intelligent typically have a difficult time teaching because it's so repetitive. It can get boring for someone like Macramalla, but he semems to enjoy it and it's awesome seeing him learn something new during class. Overall the class is tough but if you study then you're good to go. Plus he's super hot.
If you already taken Stats, you can understand his class without a doubt. However, unlike me and most students, it's very hard to understand his lectures. He would make the most awkwardest humor & not as discrete to people to easily comprehend. Plus, he would even point at you to answer a question when you're completely lost. DO NOT take him.
Doesn't seem as though he knows what he's talking about half the time and talks himself in circles. Tries to throw in jokes every 5 seconds so you don't learn much. He also assumes you know more than you actually do. All the test questions are from the exam (which is nice) but the study guides are over 100 questions and he only picks like 20-30.
i'd have to admit that in the beginning of his class was a little hard to understand. I loved the various extra credit opportunities as well as the homework dynamic- which was three assignments with reasonable due dates. The tests were simple and easy (if you studied). I passed with an A and math is not my forte. Besides, he's totally hot and funny
Well, if I were to pick my classes all over again, I would not pick stats 95 with this professor. Lectures are quite long, and they don't really make sense. He is only helpful when you ask for help individually. For the assignments, he doesn't really grade them - just looks for completion. Pick a different professor for stats 95. Save yourself.
PSA: DO NOT TAKE STATS95 WITH THIS PROFESSOR. His lectures aren't interesting. When you ask for help, he confuses you even more. I didn't even need to attend class to understand what we were learning. My tutor taught better than he did. He posts his lectures online also. And I wasted $160 on a textbook and I never cracked it open once.
He is a very kind man who hopes to see his students succeed but is bad at teaching. His lectures are always unclear and he ALWAYS over complicates a topic. (especially in stats) Exams are easy since he chooses questions directly from the study guides (for stats and psych) Don't read just memorize those study guides. Don't even have to attend class
His lectures are long and boring and hard to understand. Reading the book before attending his lecture helps a lot. I find the workload not as bad since the class is expected to be hard, there are 3 aressignments and 3 non-accumalitive exams. His tests are not bad since the questions are all mc from the study guide and there is one written problem.
Easiest A of my Life. Stopped going to class after the first midterm. Simply read the book and turn in the homework on the day of exams. Takes 1:15 to teach simple equations that would take the average person 5-10 minutes to learn from reading the book. However, for the few times that I did attend class, it was pretty interesting.
He breaks down very complicated material and makes them clear. You do have to study--this is stats, and stats is hard. But he is there for you, go to office hours if you need help, he's very kind. Study guides are a lifesaver, and he takes exams from there.
He is a great teacher! His lectures are long and boring and sometimes I felt like they had nothing to do with the chapter but he makes it fun. His test are easy, he gives a study guide of 200 questions and 50 of those questions are on the test. You have to do hw every week, seems like a lot but you get use to it.
He gets off topic way too often and over-complicates things. Lectures were a waste of time, I learned more from attending free tutoring in Macquarrie hall cause he takes too long to get to the main point. The only good thing was that he gave study guides for exams so if you study that and keep up with the material, you'll do okay.
Referring back to the previous reviews, he has changed his format of the study guide. He now does not give a so called "study guide" you basically just get 10 questions of his style of questions. He doesn't even give you the topics to focus on or anything... so you just have to study everything & when I say everything I mean everything from lecture
You spend a lot of time focusing on the formulas, and right when you feel comfortable with the formula and how to do hypothesis testing for it BAM! -the test is 90% multiple choice questions about the terms and understanding them. Where did this come from you may ask? I thought this is a math class and would be tested on math? Nope. You were wrong.
Terrible at teaching. I feel like I learned absolutely NOTHING this semester. Professor Macramalla is terrible at his job. No point in attending class other than exam days because you will have to go home and teach yourself everything on your own anyways. Hated this class with a passion. Try with all your might to steer CLEAR of him for any course.
Math is math so you really need to try to get help especially because this professor does not really teach well. Although he is a bad teacher and is boring I recommend to take his class. Only has 3 test and 3 homework assignments. Do them and do average on test and you can pass. His grading scale is 60% ish is a C (passing) and everything follows
TBH the worst prof I've had at sjsu. Retook w/ him cuz I got a C- the previous sem. I didn't understand ANYTHING Macramalla said. Do hw/ study at tutoring, his class will confuse you more. 3 hw, 3 tests. Never came to class I got full credit on all hw, C, A, & D/F? on the tests and got an A-. Tokunaga is easier to understand but harder to get an A.
He's a nice guy and very smart, but disorganized and not very good at lecturing. He makes a lot of the material much more complicated and confusing than it has to be. Also there is a group project and presentation at the end of the semester, not sure what the point of the group project is, feels like unnecessary added work.
Worst professor I've had at SJSU. Please save yourselves. Unless you are 129% desperate for Stats 95, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. You're only graded on 3 HW assignments and 3 tests, which isn't too bad but you just gotta teach yourself the content. Good luck!
Really nice guy, but the class is horrible. The tests are mc and not at all based off of the hw or lectures- was basically all vocab terms and general understanding. I got lost very early on as far as the lectures, and couldn't seem to get back on track because he's not very clear about what he's doing. Overall, other stats teacher are FAR easier.
Worst professor I had at sjsu. He humorous and everything but can't teach. I literally didn't learn anything in his class this semester. Many of my classmates agree.
since he's also a psychology teacher, he will explain concepts in more than one way, so prepare to be confused. there is free statistics tutoring for this course if needed. your grade consists of 3 homework assignments, 2 midterms and a final, & some extra credit. checks homework for completion not correctness so DO IT. he is HILARIOUS.
His class is honestly one of the most engaging ones I have taken at San Jose State so far. Professor MacRamalla is a humorous and interesting guy. He's very passionate when he is teaching and you can tell that he cares about students and tries his best to deliver his lecture. For a class like his, the effort you put in is what you will get back.
You can tell he wants his students to learn, but his lectures are confusing and it seems like he himself is confused sometimes too. You are graded on 3 homework assignments graded by completion and you turn them in with the exams. Our second midterm and final exam was take home.
We all know there's a negative correlation between 'level of difficulty' on this site and 'overall quality' (see? learned something!), bc few of us want to work hard. I worked, did well in his class, went to office hours. Any stats is a HARD CLASS. You have to do your part! I liked his jokes. Went to office hours when confused. Nice guy. Fair.
I thoroughly enjoyed his class. I took Cognition with him over the Summer (5 week course) and, yes, it was hard, but totally doable. He wants his students to learn and seems to do everything in his power to help you learn without just handing out good grades. Study, ask questions, reach out to him, and you'll be fine.
Prof Macramalla was confusing as he was unorganized with lectures and not clear on what would be on the tests. The tests and homework were not similar at all. He did try to help out the class, but he did not do a good job at simplifying concepts. On the bright side, the grading scale is weighted differently so an A- is 83.
All of our exams including the final were on canvas and homework assignments were pass or no pass based on completion.
terrible stats professor. he doesn't really know what he's doing. a funny and nice guy but do not take him unless you are desperate. I worked really hard to get an A but it was due to previous knowledge in AP stats.
He is literally one of the worst profs I've had. He expects students to already know Stats and he barely explains things. I struggled a lot this semester because of this class.
I had him fall semester of 2017. His lectures are entirely based off of the book, so I highly recommend reading it ahead of time or before the exams to study for the multiple choice portion, which makes up the majority of the exams! Had a lot of classmates complaining about him, but it's not a tough class if you study through the textbook.
Be sure to take notes . Not many assignments
can't teach and knows he can't teach. did some wild animal kung fu typa power poses at the beginning of the sem. grading scale is stupid good lmao.
he is a nice person and knows a lot about the subject but is kind of slow and awkward. but, all of the assignments and tests are online so it is an easy A class. Most of the class never even shows up. all of the powerpoint slides are online as well so you can go back and reference them.
Read the textbook. Readings aren't much but can pile if you put it off. His exams consist mostly of conceptual ideas and only has 1 to 3 actual math problems. Final is non-cumulative, online, and doesn't require Respondus. Goto his lectures to learn the actual math and general idea of the concepts. Then read the textbook to fully learn the concept
Hes pretty hot. Hes a little awkward though. I also think his teaching is easy to understand, class is pretty easy. Highly recommend, did i mention hes hot lol
This class was an easy A. I didn't learn ANYTHING but I somehow managed to get an A. Read the chapters that he assigns. The test is all multiple choice (except for one problem where you have to show work for). If u take Huntsman, Tokunaga, etc. you'll learn more but it's harder to get an A. GO WITH MACRAMALLA (ps!! check quizlet too!)
Prof Macramalla is such an hilarious guy! His teaching is very straight foward. I highly recommend you to ask questions during his lectures, because if you don't he'll just keep going. His test mainly consists of word questions and at least two math. For Spring '18 , he decided to add in projects and that really boosted my grade up. Pretty easy!
Professor Macramalla is obviously passionate about his field and seems to go the extra mile to make the lectures entertaining and engaging, which was much appreciated. This was a challenging and interesting class. He was straightforward about expectations, so as long as you show up, pay attention and put in the work it's not hard to do well.
It's very questionable how I got an A. If you have no prior knowledge of stat, find a study group quick to do the big 3 homework assignments with. The MC exams are DEFINITELY more conceptual with 1-3 actual math questions at the end. We had one easier group project at the end of the semester.
Jeremy Collado in STATS 95 Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 to 10:15 am really likes this class, the teacher is the best, professor MacRamalla is a true gem.
I took stats 95 with professor Macramalla. Hes really nice and does care about his students but the way he teaches is very hard to follow. He definitely knows the subject but he focuses on teaching the wrong things based off of what he tests you on. I dont recommend taking his class unless you are ready to teach yourself based off of his slides.
He's a really dedicated teacher that takes the bus everyday to teach his students. He's really hilarious and goofy which makes the class really entertaining. His exams are all online, showing up to class isn't really mandatory, but recommended just for his presence.
Prof MacRamalla is a real gem. His dedication to psychology is truly amazing. He is a funny guy and will make you laugh if you show up to his lectures. His lectures are heavy but it is easy to follow if you simply take notes. This class is not hard, the homework and tests are online and you will be able to pass this class with an A positive.
Although this professor is very caring and funny, he is the worst professor I have had so far. Only good thing about his class is that he curves his grades like crazy, this is the only reason I passed his class. I have no idea how I passed his class with a B. I FAILED both midterms, have no idea how I did on the final but my final grade was a B.
wow!! yeah just like that! I am taking his class now and I didn't know anything about him when I enrolled in the class. He is very funny and intelligent person. I really like how he answers our questions it is very inspiring and has changed me. I was JUST taking the class but I want to not only major in psychology but also to be its professor.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. You basically could never show up and you'll know as much as you would going. He shows a couple slides per lecture and doesn't go in order at all. Basically shows optical illusions in class and then gives you an exam full of stuff he never taught you. Nice guy, terrible professor.
Paper, group project, three exams, reading another book on the side. Halfway through the semester, he tells us we don't need the book and to focus just on the slides, which are completely disorganized! He has a hard time explaining himself, so the exams are difficult since we don't have a book to rely on and his slides and him are all over the place
The class is pretty lecture heavy, but you can still pass by reviewing lecture slides and occasionally the text. I missed a couple of classes; the book was really helpful in getting me caught up, more so than the slides that are posted on Canvas. Be prepared to read if you dont get the lectures. He gives lots of examples, does them by hand too.
Knows what he's saying, but very bad professor. Doesn't grade anything until the very last week so you'll never know what grade you have. Slides are all over the place, which makes it hard to keep track of what's being lectured. When giving a presentation, will interrupt to show off and use the opportunity to further teach the class about the topic
He's is super disorganized and his powerpoints are a mess. He goes off tangents and never gets his point across. For our class he dropped our textbook that said was REQUIRED halfway through the semester because he saw that it wasn't helping us with our exams. His study guides don't even contain most of the stuff he tests you on. Don't take
This was an easy class. He gave homework, but it's a quick write up about an article of your choosing relating to the chapter. His test was simple as well because you could find most of the answers to the questions online from different quizlets and other websites.
I mostly used the textbook to help me with homework, because sometimes the lectures didn't really help. He gives quizzes, but they are based on information from the slides. The frequency of homework is not that much but is given for each chapter that is being covered.
His lectures are fascinating and his knowledge of cognition is amazing. Hes open to questions, even when they take him off on a tangent. His grading is fair on the tests and he is a gentle grader on the large group assignment. While attendance isnt required, I dont think you would pass if you dont hear any of his lectures.
No idea how I passed because he didn't upload any grades on canvas. Super unorganized and tangent long notes. It's like he invented a whole new method to statistics and only he understands it. I could not get any help from friends because the homework had to show work in his way(who knows if he even looked at it).
really good professor. class in its nature was a bit tough because it's psychology. he gives good examples and is funny. -switch to online classes bc coronavirus and he's still a great professor. tries to reach out and help students who don't understand. just put in the effort/work/study time bc it'll be worth it for the tests
He is really knowledgeable and definitely cares about his students. His lectures can be disorganized and he jumps back and forth a lot but, if you don't understand something he is always willing to help. There is one term paper which is about 6 pages and 3 exams. The exams are pretty straightforward and have no trick questions.
class isn't mandatory, he records lectures so you can always visit those. this class is definitely LECTURE HEAVY and they're kinda boring. few assignments to do but quizzes are hard because he only gives you a little time to complete them (1 min per question).
I dont understand the negative reviews, Dr. Macramalla is one of my favorite professors at SJSU! I take him when I can. He is smart, funny and keeps the class engaged. He wants you to succeed, and is very accessible outside of class and understanding to extenuating circumstances. P.s. the slides are the best study material for tests.
Macramalla is something. He makes a lot of dad jokes, which are sometimes funny. He lectures the entire time and often goes over the allotted time. There is one assignment a week. The tests will go over both book and lecture material so make sure you read the chapters.
Spends more time making jokes than teaching the material clearly. Uses many hypothetical examples that do not apply to class material. He is a psychology teacher, but he taught my stats class. He did not even post our grades the whole semester!
He's knowledgeable about stats, but the dept(?) is having him use another prof's slides for lecture, so he'll spend ample time trying to make the content more digestible. Records lectures! Wait out the fluff and the material you need is there. Tries his best to entertain students and engage and always reminded us of mental health resources.
I'm a psychology minor but I love his lectures. He made psychology more enjoyable than I expected, always tries his best to answer students questions, and if he couldn't he would do research and explain the answer again. He explains tough and boring definitions in a fun and relaxing way. If you need to take PSYC he is the one.
He's a nice professor and has a good personality. However, his online course is so unorganized. Confusing group project layout, power points are all over the place, and unorganized teaching. Goes on a lot of tangents. Good thing is he records lectures and posts them. Hard grader.
Hes a knowledgeable and cool guy, but treats this course like a grad school course. good luck keeping up with the 90 slide powerpoints.
Professor MacRamalla was a nice and funny teacher in person but comes off kinda rude via email imo. Study guides are EXTREMELY helpful for the exams so I loved that. The weekly assignments are tedious and boring but easy points. You dont really need the textbook either.
25 hrs a week. Lecture slides, lecture, and textbook are incomprehensible. Self study is more efficient than going to lecture, but still very slow because the book is worded terribly. We were given 2 tests in 2 days. Assignments teach us very little and are essentially busy work. Slow grader. Test questions are not his. Don't take this class.
He honestly was not hard at all over the summer. Lectures were long and a bit boring. He randomly calls on you so it made me not want to show up. The quizzes and tests were not hard. We had to do science dailys which was finding articles related to lecture and answering questions about them. Was not difficult at all and I was able to get a A-
Cognition material is very similar to perception. I felt like he rambles a lot during lecture. You dont need the textbook. Its only used for quizzes that you can retake numerous times and tells you the correct answers after so no point. He does use/talk about the other text tho. My only complaint is the term paper, his past advice didnt help me.
Lectures were sometimes really interesting and other times it was kind of a drag. Definitely read the book as the lectures will make more sense that way. His tests were rather easy, as long as you review your notes and the slides. He is pretty funny and makes random jokes during class. Lecture goes by faster if you participate and have questions
Really funny and keeps class entertaining. Assignments are credit/no credit and tests are online. I enjoyed his class but sometimes the exams and answers would be kind of confusing. Would take again!
He is funny. Lots of reading, his lectures in class only holds 25% of the book. The test is allowed 1 minute for 1 question, by the time you finished reading the question, times up. No room for thinking, either you know it or you don't. Most of the questions worded in a way that you would have to re-read it to get it.
I found this class to be pretty difficult simply based on the content. However, I really enjoyed professor Macramella's lectures. He is very passionate about psychology and does his best to make each lesson interesting through humor. Time for tests is limited so you need to know your stuff, I recommend taking notes you can look back at. :)
To be honest, he is a good guy overall and it is clear that he at least has some sort of passion of teaching. The problem is that his actual teaching is not that helpful and often times I had to go to the textbook in order to figure out the material. Class lectures feel aimless and take far too long to explain simple concepts. He is funny though.
I liked his personality and passion for psychology but his lectures were all over the place and very fast paced. He also expects you to follow along in the textbook but didn't mention that till it was time for the first exam. He is really funny and loves answering all the questions in class. He also cares cause he pushed back our first exam 3 times
He's very passionate about what he does. He cares about his students if he could answer students questions all day he would! but honestly that's what gets his lectures behind and had to move our first exam 3 times. His lectures are everywhere. There are 3 exams and most of it is in the lectures so take good notes! you'll need them. Overall great guy!
Lectures are always fun to attend and you can tell he is passionate about the subject! Luckily our exams were all remote but I'm not sure how he is doing in his future classes. The only cons I have are the exams (only 1min per question) and the slides can be a bit unorganized, so make sure you study off that and the book (it's free on Z-Library)
Honestly he was very interested in student questions that it would take away from the actual lecture but otherwise he was a great professor. He does go at a very fast pace and bounces between slides so be sure to pay close attention. If you want the physical textbook theres a cheap version on amazon that you could checkout.
I had Professor Macramalla as my intro to psychology in the Spring of 2024 as it was an online Zoom lecture. Based on what I enjoyed about this professor is that there are 12 Science Dailies, two impression papers, and 3 exams (50 questions in 50 minutes?) all remote. I would take him with any psychology courses!
Easily my favorite psych professor at SJSU, I've taken 2 of his classes. Easy but tedious assignments. If you pay attention in lecture you'll do fine on exams. Lectures are interesting but it's difficult to study for his classes because he's so lecture heavy and relies on visual cues. Pretty lenient and understanding overall!
Professor Macramalla is enthusiastic and cares about student questions, though the fast-paced lectures can be challenging. Utilize the textbook and Unstuck AI for effective study prep to do well.
Ppl think he's funny but theres lots of inappropriate jokes that r j uncomfy for the learning environment. Asked students to buy textbook, we only used the tables at the back (dont buy it). Explained how to do the final project the class before it was due. BUT his exams were easy, not that hard to do good
Funny guy, ok teacher. He is kind of all over the place every class making it hard to learn. Most of us taught ourselves or each other throughout the semester. One group project at the end that is confusing and has minimal instructions, but other than that not too homework heavy and has easy tests. Also, do not buy the book, you don't rlly need it.
Funny, chill, grading is very chill. Lectures can be hard to follow, but once you catch on it makes more sense
Taking Stat-95 with Professor Steve was possibly one of my worst choices this academic schoolyear. This man is so in love with the sound of his voice and the pursuit of being funny that more often than not, I felt like I was at an open mic night and not a math class. I did not learn much this semester I fear. Thanks Steve.
funny guy but gets off topic easily, making homework hard + longer to do because you have to teach yourself the lecture. easy homework quizzes every week, 2 easy online exams, and 1 average final group project. keep up with the homework and you will be fine. DON'T BUY TEXTBOOK! we only used it for the charts in the back (which is all online).
I would not take his class again. don't buy the textbook. Stats itself is an easy class, however, I had to teach it all to myself because the professor kept getting distracted. The amount of times I've heard "I'm not sure how to explain this to you so bear with me guys" was concerning. He also makes a lot of mistakes while teaching.
sassy man apocalypse. in his own world lwk did NOT teach but he was entertaining. not much hw, chill abt late work. tests all mcq and online. easy to pass his class
super engaging professor, he constantly tried to make everyone laugh, which at times wasnt the best. It felt like he was more focused on making people laugh than the actual material. The work load is super doable, tests were focused more on the ideas for stats, and one group project at the end of the semester (MAKE SURE TO GET A GOOD PARTNER).
The exams are online but do need to read the textbook. The professor is funny and make the class interesting!
As a student, I didn't really learn much because the way he explained stuff was kinda confusing. He incorporates jokes into lectures and he's nice and funny, but stats was a pre-req for me and I genuinely thought I was gonna fail the class. I'd recommend self-studying and making friends in the class to talk about the material together.
On the day an exam opened, my pet had a stroke and had to be taken to the vet. I was at the vet all day and emailed the professor asking for an extension, but was sent a "I sympathize but no, please do the exam on the designated day". She died in less than 24 hours. The worst part is he took away some of my last moments with her. He stole that time
Funny but not great at explaining stats, class was a lot of work. One time he turned around and spanked himself mid-class and said, "I've been a bad boy." So there's that.
This professor talks in circles and randomly picks slides to discuss. He tests on 5 long chapters at a time. His study guides are long and fairly useless! He has borderline inappropriate jokes, that can be really awkward. I suggest to find another professor!
Professor Macramalla is one of those professors that you can tell is very passionate about their subject. Classes were fun, albeit they didn't go too in depth on the material we're tested on. Be ready to self study a lot! Other than that the Professor cares about his students a lot, and he'd be happy to help you out on anything psych-related :-)
Absolutely do not take. His grading scale is the worst thing I've ever seen from a professor. He likes to skip slides from his lectures, so ur better off reading the textbook instead to prepare for the exams which is 35% of your grade. Term paper is 40% of ur grade. The rest of the HW assignments are 10% and 15% which won't help bring ur grade up
I think he does try to teach, but his way of delivering the subjects that he knows in the back of his hand to people who have never heard of the concept before is quite confusing. I have to highlight the book while listening to his lecture. Tests are heavy, but it is not required to be in class or need an access code so you can work around that.
Yes, it is hard to learn in this class if you are looking for a traditional style of teaching. He goes on long tangents and stories, and keeps things lighthearted and funny. Even though it's hard to always get what he's saying, if you show up to office hours he'll help you out. Very funny and entertaining. I kept a record of his quotes.
Nice professor but not very helpful, at least for me. I show up, take notes, even go to tutoring and I still don't understand the material. Focuses more on making the class laugh rather than in depth teaching, its a lecture system so it feels like he is talking at us rather than helping us understand.
I have seen more than one person break down in tears in his class. That should be all you need to know.
Mac stated that "these classes are meant to make you flail " he wants to "induce academic distress" on his students. His words exactly. This professor does not teach interactively; he uses lectures consisting of 120+ slides and only gets to about 15 of them jumping out of order. Useless guides. Don't recommend, you'll end up teaching yourself.
Professor Macramalla is a great professor. He is passionate about the subjects he teaches. He is also super kind and caring about his students. He regularly checks up on the class in terms of mental health, grades, scores, etc. He does assign weekly hw but there are only 3 tests for the semester so as long as you study and do the hw you'll do fine.
