Mr. Mayers' class is very hard. If you are looking for a easy "A" forget it. He grades very hard on syntax and grammer mistakes so make sure to pay attention to these when you write your papers because he doesn't teach this class at all (even though it is english 94). He can be a little confusing in class especially when assigning homework. He is a
I really enjoyed taking this class. Mr. Mayers made the 4 hour classes alot of fun. The assignments were also interesting. I am waiting until spring to be able to take his Eng 1A class.
Awsome professor! Very interesting, very chatty; lots of stories. Great choice in course subject: globalisation. The subject made the class interesting b/c you could write papers on whatever interested you. He's only hard on grading b/c he wants his students to excel- not to make their lives any harder.
Great teacher. He is very animated and likes to talk about current events. Grades extremely hard on syntax, but if you pay attention and do the work it is easy to pass. He gives a homework assignment every class. No slackers. He is like an encyclopedia; he is very educated and full of information.
I enjoyed his class, although it was not easy. He is very intelligent and has a unique style of teaching. You definitely will walk out from each of his class learning something new. He makes English class to be fun and educating.
I took Mr. Mayers this past spring and really enjoyed his class. His level of intelligence is admirable. He is very witty and has a lot of great stories. Show up to class, participate, and take advantage of his office/writing lab hours and an A is attainable. Be cautious of your grammatical/syntax errors and be willing to challenge yourself.
He's very intellegent guy, but also very biased. If you do not agree with his opinion, he'll may embarass you in front of other students. Also, he is very moody and often is plain mean. There is a lot of homework! Altough I got an A, I wouldn't recommend his class unless you are looking for a challenge.
Great teacher! He's young so he has interesting and progressive ideas. We studied the Americas and at first the concept scared me..but it turned out to be a really exciting semester! I recommend him, but only if you're willing to put in some effort.
I'm not going to recommend him. I don't like how he wanted us to write our essays.. it's like there's only one way to analyze a book, and if your analyzation does not agree with his, he'd give you a low grade. He can be a little snob too.. If you like challenge, you can take him..
I thought that he was a great teacher. I think that some students were not intellectual enough to participate in the class discussion at times, and he was very sarcastic but I liked it.
I agree with the other raters that stated that syntax/grammar is graded very harshly on the essays. HW is a breeze; it is the essays that are hard. Bad first/second essays doesn't necessarily mean a bad grade. I got a B when I thought I deserved a C or lower.
I took Mayers for summer semester and it was TOUGH but the assigned readings were interesting and essays were based on the strength of the argument or thesis for or against the author. His assignments were very clear, yet meeting the goal for an A on any paper is near impossible ( syntax and grammar killed me! ). Take him for a challenge.
Meyers is a great teacher. What can I say...he is very intelligent, which is HOT.He has very progressive views.I didn't expect to read Audre Lorde in his class. He is a little tough, but I find that admirable coming from such a young professor. I'm sure he has a great future ahead of him in his teaching career.
I really like the guy. He gets most students senses of humor even if they are very dry. He may not cater to those who are looking for an easy class, but he does teach you quite a bit. I really don't know how I got an A. Insanity I say!
mayers' class was the worst class i've taken at CCSF. he picks difficult books to read & assings 50-100+ pgs per night. he spends the WHOLE SEMSETER, EVERY SINGLE CLASS discussing them. he'll call on everyone to talk so make sure you don't fall behind. attendance, hw, one 8pg essay, two 10 pg essays, and one 14-16 pg essay. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE MAYERS CLASS!!! BOOKS THAT ARE READ AND ANALYZED IN CLASS MUST BE HIS WAY OR NO WAY. GRADES HARD ON ESSAYS EVEN AFTER YOU WROTE 10-16 PAGES. SYNTAX SYNTAX SYNTAX. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS OR YOU'RE GOING TO REGRET IT!!
Ok. I AM SO SICK OF THIS TEACHER!. SYNTAX SYNTAX CRITIQUE! CRITIQUE!! ANALYSIS! i am wordless but if you do not want to pass the class, take him. I will never take him for any class again and will never recommend him to anyone. Good Luck with him.
I was a A student until I took this fools class.. I got a C+, he gets side tracked on everything, doesnt know how to stay on topic.. Talks about USELESS STUFF.. repeats himself too much.. STAY AWAY.. gives u attitude if u ask too many questions in the writing center.. picks on ppl in class. HW EVERY NIGHT
I think he's great. If you do your work and participate, you will do well. The material is beefy and thought provoking. It is supposed to challenge you. The easy way, is not always the right way. You will learn a lot. He's fair and not biased. Take him.
i took him over summer and will not recommend him to anyone even though i passed. i am actually telling all my friend not to take him, unless they want to fail. He picks on everyone in class and humiliate them. treating ppl like they are dumb. not to say more, JUST DON'T TAKE HIM!! or good luck to you.
I took this dude over the summer! i gotta admit! he is the hardest teacher i ever took!. i would not recommend this dude to anyone but unless u want the challenge and or fail the class. Don't waste ur time this teacher!
I took him for the summer it was challenging but wasnt tough as long as you attented and did the homework youll do fine. All the homework lad to the essay you have to do summary then ur analysis which is basically ur body paragraphs. He doesnt pick on people only if you dont participate. Dont listen to all the bad revews hes cool and you learn a lo
Hard to understand, hard grader on essays, Take his class if you want to get an F
took him this semester... realized not going anywhere.. half the class had dropped... he is hard. will never take him ever again. rather waste another semester than to have him as a teacher.
This class was probably the most challenging class I have ever taken. He picks very in depth hard books and is a tough grader on essays but I feel like I learned a lot and accomplished a huge feat getting through the class. The final is insane pages after pages of vocab , mini essays and a main essay. Take this class if you want a huge challenge.
take him if you want to get criticized or picked on... he is rude to students... and corrects you always... and if you say something unclear he has this look of thinking that you are stupid. don't take him... his class is more political than english.
I am taking Mr. Mayers' class this semester. He is very helpful, interesting, challenging, and nice. He will help you in class, in office, in lab... 80% or more of the class likes him and learns a lot, and 15% or so don't do any work and then treat him bad. You can tell by what they say what kind of people they are.
I think his class is very helpful and he always there to help you. As long as you really work in his class, you can gain a lot. He is very strict in grading for usual, but not so hard on my final grade i feel.
Mr. Mayers was very helpful and taught me a variety of insightful information about English. At times he can seem grumpy, but that doesn't compare to how he listens and works with students. He tries his best to teach students and helps them in any given situation, whether it's a late essay or late homework, he gives chances.
Very good teacher, taught me many things in English that many teachers fail too lecture about. Many people feel like Mr. Mayers is mean, but it depends how you take it. In the real world not all your bosses will be passive about late assignments and Mayers is very understandable. As long as he sees you're trying he will pass you.
Prof. Mayers is quite hard but as long as you continue to attend class and do all his assignments which part guiding steps to the essays(big part of grade), you should be fine. If you take him, you really got to work! Slacking doesn't work for him! But overall, he's a good teacher. Take him if you can.
One of the best teachers I'd ever had. HW everyday, but it led to the ultimate goal of becoming a better writer. Mayers helped me a lot after class and in the resource center. He is extremely knowledgeable about current events and worldly topics. A lot of people here have bashed him, but look: I have a learning disability, and I still earned an A.
Greeat teacher! He gives homework everyday and is quite hard. BUT on top of that, Mr. Mayers is always ready to answer questions. Don't be afraid to take him! Just be afraid that you think you can't take it because taking him means NO SLACKING!
Took him in the summer. Work hard and you will be fine. Do/type in all your homework. Do your essay early, and go to his office. Very helpful. Very clear. Wants people to succeed. Learned a lot. Highly reccommended!
prof mayers is a good teacher. a lot of class discussion. he is very clear on what he wants from your papers.
This guy is helpful, interesting, and wonderful! He makes the class so interesting that it will make you want to participate and show up in class everyday. His essays are easy and he is willing to help you with it if you show him that you want to. Beginning of class he talks about current events, then he moves on with the subject. Take him! Reccom!
Professor Mayers is clear, concise, and topical. He deftly combines current events with the teaching of grammar and syntax, resulting in a class that's not only interesting, but well instructed. Take him if you want an engaging environment!
i took this professor for english 93 and then for 1b. english is my least favorite class but this guy makes it fun. do your readings and hw, go to class and participate and most importantly meet him during his office hours if you need help or need to talk to someone. :). GO Mr. Mayers
He expects too much from people. Your grammar must be flawless. The class is really stressful and not worth it, especially for people with majors in areas with classes that usually require more attention (like Math or Science).
Steven Mayers is an extremely helpful professor. He is IVY school professor material. While he grades hard, you learn a lot. He provides office hours, and he is willing to work with all students that are responsible, and those who attend to his office hours asking for help. His teaching style is clear and concise.Lazy students are the ones that compla
Mr. Mayers is definitely a very inspirational teacher.I have never met such a teacher that will take the time and go out of his normal schedule to meet up with a student and help them out.He makes you do a lot of writing, but all that writing that you do goes towards your essays. He is the true definition of the word "teacher". Go Mr. Mayers!!!
i found it cute when he tried to be funny. he loves mexico (talks about it alot) he can be brutally sarcastic, rude, kinda mean. i didnt like the way he talks to students (especially the ESL students). he doesnt seem understanding. but he is a great grammer teacher. answers all questions, and wants you to understand
I took Mr.Meyers2x. He is extremely helpful during his office hours and tells you exactly what he wants from you in a paper. I enjoyed his class but be prepared to be called upon sometimes
I like how he challenges students to think critically and do more in depth papers, but I feel he doesn't do a very good job at directing the class. This imbalance is hard to maneuver because he expects so much outside of class and doesn't cover enough material in class!
Mr Mayers is a great teacher. He made the writing process understandable for me and now I am excited, rather than indifferent, about taking english 1B. If you keep up with all the homework, you will find that when it comes to writing the essay, you have the major chunk of your work already finished. Thumbs up. Good luck!
I like Mr. Mayers. He prepares students for University writing. Go to his office hours!!! HE is the best!!!
If you must take this class make sure you have plenty of time. I'm at school full time and work part time; i also don't have time for any of my other class work because of his class assignments. He is a good teacher but from everyone in class that I've talked to, the best average grade is a C. Think of his class as an Honers Class.
Great professor!
Great teacher and made the class interesting
Good English teacher -- Assigns lots of reading and writing. Has high grading standards. You should go to his office hours regularly even though he is busy. Besides that he is very clear, class is interesting, and he is friendly.
Mr. Mayers is not easy, his assignments require a lot of reading and you better have a lot of time to revise your essays, but he is pretty fair when it comes to attendance and homework. As long as you do good on the essays you should be fine, the topics and the interesting class discussions definately makes his class worth it. i learned a lot.
I liked Dr. Mayers, I think he was very engaging and made the class interesting. But his class is SUPER intense. TONS of reading, you will be reading every night. 5 essays from 6-16 pages long, plus a re-write of your first essay. A presentation of your final essay. I don't recommend taking this class if you are taking any other intense courses.
For serious students who want to learn.
Professor Mayers is a really good teacher. He is really helpful and understanding, and the essay topics are fairly easy to write about. There are a few essays required throughout the semester, but they are graded fairly easy. His class consisted of many in-class discussions and he often calls on people. Follow the coursework and you'll do well.
I can make appointments with him easily. He is very approachable and friendly professor helping you succeed in your academic writing.
I really enjoyed Mr. Mayers' class, really engaging, he gave clear instructions for essay guidelines, and is super friendly and easy to make an appointment with for help on reading, essays, etc. His essay assignments seemed difficult at first, but after the first one, it was much easier with practice and a few questions that I asked.
Mr. Mayers is one of my favorite instructors of all time. His class is fun and engaging and you really do learn a lot about the writing process. I highly recommend taking his class.
Being someone who has to balance work and school, it was nice to have a teacher who understands that i need help. Hes always there for you, but his class is a challange. He helps by setting up apointment. He is a great teacher will take his class again.
Wasn't that clear on how to write papers. Always referred to the rules for writers but wasn't clear on how to fix your paper just kept telling us to look in rules for writer for grammar mistakes. Lectures didn't seem to really pertain to the class just his past. Would not take again.
He is very helpful. Even though he is tough about grammar, his class was easy, less assignment. Only focus on the essay.
This man is smart and has a kind heart. He truly wants his students to pass show him your effort by attending and participating class
Professor Mayers is an awesome teacher. He is generous with deadlines, exensions, freebies, having to miss/leave class. Do your work, communicate when you're having trouble or need more time. He is a really smart guy and has a lot of knowledge to offer. I'm an incredibly stronger writer after his class. Take him!
Mr. Mayers is a great professor and gives an amazing lecture you will never get bored and u can talk about anything your opinion with all respect given to you . he has a beautiful heart with pure intentions to all student . I was an ESL student when i took his class i learned a lot and benefited a lot in writing .
Mr. Mayer's set a standard in my first semester at CCSF. He gives enormous attention to the needs of the class and reinforces areas where improvement is needed. Yes, we will be challenged, but, in the end, you'll come out with solid skills. Mr. Mayers is a very respectful professor to everyone. I give him 5 Stars!
Really kind and understanding! Connects with his students really well and goes out of his way to help you succeed!
Professor Mayers is great teacher and he cares about his students. This class isnt easy, but youll learn a lot from him.
His class is easy, he gives sample papers. A lot of students just some stuff and bring back and get good grade. Be ready to read a lot and attend his classes and do on time homework. If you have some emergency just email. He is really respectful with great sarcasm lol.
Professor Mayers was a great professor. He gives 5 essays which werent easy. Its a university English class so you have to work for it but he gives great feedback and always helps you so much. He also let us rewrite 2 essays for better grades. Highly recommend , you have to read but not too much. Great English teacher
We do "workshops" every class, although we aren't allowed to give any sort of negative feedback. He doesn't exactly teach the structure of storytelling either, so it's just a bunch of amateur, inexperienced writers, and we as a class are just expected to read their work and praise them, regardless of if the work is actually good or not.
I took Mr. Mayers in fall of 2018, and he is one of the professors that I will always remember. He really cares about helping his students improve in his class. His grading criteria and feedbacks are very clear, so it highlights your weakness well. Unless you have a talent in writing, this class will not be easy, but Mr Mayer's is there to help.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! He even persudaded me to retake a class with him lol why would i wan to retake a class with him knowing his same grading critique?
Mr. Mayers is a good teacher and very knowledgable person. However, sometimes he can be a bit disorganized by spending an hour of class just talking to one of the students. Although there are lots of homework, his topics are very interesting. Expect to learn a lot of important stuff during this course. Be ready to work really hard on your papers.
The way he teaches is very helpful
He's very nice, tries to make the class entertaining, but lots of reading and he grades the paper pretty rough, but if you keep up you'll definitely get an A
Steven Mayers is hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. I took English 1A and 1B with him when I was still at CCSF (before transferring to my university) and his teaching, reading list, and grading feedback did more for my writing than any other teacher I've had to date. It's been years, but I thought of him today and so wrote this.
Best English teacher youll ever have. His class is very easy and enjoyable. Will give you plenty of feedback and hell even give you a chance or two to rewrite essays for a better grade. The most understanding and caring teacher I know. Take his class!!!
Steven is an amazing professor! Super understanding, and will help you any way he can. Gives you feedback on all your work submitted and shows you where you need to work on and allows you to re-submit for a higher grade! This is what learning is about, if you make a mistake he will tell you and then you learn from it! :) Thanks, Steven!
Steven is a wonderful professor who has a serious passion for what he does. There are 6 essays, 2 of which are your midterm and final. All project essays can be REWRITTEN as many times as you'd like. He's so caring and offers SO much help. He also grades essays and gets back to emails immediately. Take him! You won't be disappointed.
He is one of the best professor Ive ever had at CCSF, I took English 1 A two times and it was my last chance. I hated writing very much , but after taking his class , I love writing. He is very nice guy; he could help you all the way long . He allows to revise the 4 essays as many as you like till the end of the semester, then you could get an A.
I took Prof. Mayer's English 1A in Fall'13. Seven years later I just want to come back and say thank you. He was the type of outstanding teacher that truly inspired, changed my attitude towards English/writing, and made me remember him all life. He taught with real passion, worked extra hard to make sure every student learned and improved.
Easy A, super nice professor. Will give extensions and doesn't mark off for late work. Only had to read a few chapters from 4 books. Only 4 major essays and his feedback are individualized for each student. Gives lots of chance for improvement. His class focuses on immigration and real stories.
No deadlines and essay revisions can be made as much as we wanted. He gives constructive feedback (grammar, spelling, etc). He provided the books. We read and wrote about undocumented immigration (policies and our reactions). I don't agree with everything I read or heard from him, but did so for the grade. He plays guitar sometimes.
Steven Mayers is a great teacher. There is no deadline for assignments, and you can revise your essays as many time as you want. You can revise it until you reach an A. He also helps former students to write recommendations. He will be there to help you!
Great teacher, one of the best teachers ive had in my life honestly. I took his class online and he is very understanding about the whole pandemic and let us turn in work whenever (no due date), in saying that, ofc you should at least try to turn it in on time to leave a good impression. He assigns a lot of work but his generosity makes up for it!
Professor Mayers is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I fell behind in the middle of the semester but he would always check up on me and encourage me to finish my assignments. When submitting assignments, he always gave back great feedback which really improved my writing and made me more confident when writing. Rating: 100/10
I had a great semester with Professor Mayers, he was incredibly kind and caring and would always check up if falling behind in class. While doing assignments, he would help and give pointers on how to make your writing better and how to gain confidence. He is probably one of the best teachers I've ever had in my life!
This is a professor that wants to teach and wants you to learn. Because of him, I feel that I have greatly improved my writing skills. He really breaks down how to write a proper college-level essay, and the course material is relevant to real world issues. If you want to actually receive a proper education, Professor Mayers is the way to go!
Solid and caring teacher. 4 unit class so a lot of reading and writing. Doesn't dock for late papers and will let you revise. Don't fall behind so you can fix your papers if need be. Always there when you need help. Very encouraging, helps you do well. 4 essays, 2 in-class, best english teacher I've had thus far.
One of the absolute worst English classes I've ever taken. Several readings every week, some upwards of 10 pages, every other day. Has no respect for any other classes. Toughest grader I've ever come across. Extremely nitpicky. I've helped with essays for Berkeley Grad students, and PhD students, and he gives me more scathing reviews than they did.
Mr. Mayers was amazing and very considerate. He acknowledged student's have their own lives outside of academics and gave the support needed to accommodate us. He was clearly passionate and educated in his lectures and encouraged growth and participation. One of the best teachers I have had in my entire life.
People forget that ENGL 1A&1B are dense and difficult. Mayers is caring, supportive, and flexible! I didn't love the class, but he made it tolerable. Tons of reading with the textbook and 1 piece of lit per essay. 4 essays and 2 short for the midterm and final. He made the final essay optional due to class pacing! Gives tons of personal feedback!
The professor is understandable with your class schedule. Four essays and 2 mini-essays for midterm/final. Online reading Persuall Annotations for readings and group discussions. Revision of Final Drafts for essays are granted and is available if need assistance with your essays. Two mandatory meetings with professor. He is a great professor!
Professor Steven Mayers is awesome! He's kind, funny, and makes every class fun and inspiring. He even brings snacks and food, and gives extensions when students need them. He explains things clearly and truly cares about his students. One of the best, most supportive professors ever!
