His presentation is really good, but his exams are very subjective.
Most of this exams is based on the textbook. He is a hard grader.
he is one of the best professor i have ever had...very funny and knowledgeable person. however the exams are not easy.
A real funny guy & he teaches really well - you'll definately learn in this class. Best way to study is take really good notes & then study your notes really well - every detail & exception counts! I think he's a great teachere to take
Too bad he teaches only tax and not other acc courses. He, by far, is just superb.Makes dry sunjects filled with life and humor.Uncanny. Tests, like others said are not too straightforward though but VERY FAIR, but you need to study to do well.
One of the best accounting professors at Baruch. Makes lectures very fun and energenic. Attending his class and taking notes are crucial for examinations. His exams are very tricky, but fair.

this professor knows his material and can deliver that information to class in very easy and helpful matter. however his tests are very tricky even though they come straight from the notes. if u know russian - whatever u do don't talk to him in russian thats a guarantee lower grade.
He is hard. Exams are hard. But he is very nice and helpful but a hard grader. Picks the trickiest questions possible from the authors of the textbook. But I still recommend him even though I prolly wont get a B in his class
One of the trickiest exams you will ever take. But he is the man! Take him to learn alot about taxation as well as for your future life. But the tests are mad confusing
Reasonable, clear, useful lectures, aided by a good dose of humor. He does repeat a little each class but at least you're never at a loss. And, of course you'll become confident in filing your own tax returns afterwards. His exams are never over the top-just do the homework. A good professor!
This professor is an ****, he does not help with homework and he is unwilling to help most of the time after class. He does not value effort even if you try he will still give you an F.
Clear explanations using great examples. However, when you get to the exam, you realize this class is not that easy. His all-multiple choice exams are pretty hard with a low class average. I think he is a great professor, however, he needs to change the format of his tests. Very tricky exams.
Once you take the exams, you will realize he is not as easy as he seems in his lectures. A wake up call to study really hard. Very slight hooks and tricks in the questions and the class avg is always never above a 73.He is very clear and funny tho.
hard exams very tricky, but good professor
One of the best professor I have ever taken. He knows the subject like the back of his hand. Class discussions are awesome. You will learn alot. He really wants his students to understand the top. His exams are tricky but fair. You will not be disapointed. I would strongly recommend.
Awesome, awesome prof. Definitely one of the best at Baruch. He explains the material very well. His exams are not tricky. I loved his lectures, not boring at all and he is funny. I really recommend taking him. I have a lot of respect for him.

The worst
Very hard tests but he will make you a tax expert
He's ok, His material is easy and straight forward. He spoon feeds you it. He does treat his students like they are three year olds. No food in class, office meetings for being a distraction(whispering), Detention, etc.... He should teach middle school, he'd like it better.
He gives very hard exam!!!
not good
He gives really tricky test and it's nothing like the ones we did in the book. You have no idea where the questions are coming from and got so lost during the test. Not recommended!
His lectures are really good but his tests are really tough. Like he will test you on stuff that you would think isnt gonna be that important. If you do take his class study everything that he went over cause he will test you on stuff that you would think isnt gonna be on the test.
May seem like he's helpful but he isn't. Doesn't go over hw clearly, doesn't give any helpful review or practice problems for the exams, and he is biased when it comes to grading. Requires hw to be done for every class yet you never got back any graded hw.
This guy is an absolute peice of crap!! He does not care if a person invested so much time and effort, not to mention homeworks and project at the end of the semester, he would still give you a bad grade. The exams are very tricky, and he expects you to do homeworks before he discusses the chapter in the class. Take him at your own risk!!
HARD PROFESSOR!! HE EXPECTS YOU TO DO HOMEWORKS BEFORE HE DISCUSSES THE CHAPTER IN THE CLASS, H.Ws ARE MANDATORY, BUT HE NEVER GIVES 'EM BACK TO YOU. HE NEVER CARES HOW MUCH OF AN EFFORT YOU PUT IN THIS CLASS, IN THE H.Ws AND IN THE PROJECT, HE WOULD STILL GIVE YOU BAD GRADE. HIS TESTS ARE VERY TRICKY AND HE NEVER GIVES REVIEWS AT ALL.
May seem like he can teach, may seem like he is funny, but in the end he screws you over. Good grades are given to the students who constantly suck up to him, and the rest are left with a grade he pulls out of his behind. When asked to explain how the final grade was calculated, he'll just tell you not to bother cause he wont change it.
Why people said he is bad??????? He really helps students. I was in class average but I still get a B+. I like the way he teaches. Funny, helpful and he can apply to the real life situation. I guess he curves at the end. He is the best TAX prof compared to others .
The professor is very heplful that he explained his materials in details in the class. If you do not understand, you can ask him after class and he does his best to answer your inquiries about the subject. He also tells you how you did in the exam and points out what points you missed in the exam.
BEST PROFESSOR IN THE SCHOOOL !!!!
Best Professor in my entire college experience! Teaches you not simply for an exam, but for your understanding of the topic. Taught ideas I will never forget. Anyone interested in Taxation should take him.
Should you take this class the Depends (You'll get the joke about 2 weeks into class) The guy is great if you want to learn anything in life about tax. If you want to know taxes the way they need to be known and done he is the one to take, he really knows his stuff as well as how to show it to everyone. Hey you have $3,300 get them from him.
He is THE best professor I have ever had at Baruch College. He explains everything VERY clearly.
He's an excellent professor. Just pay attention to what he says, take good notes, and do hws(not sure if he really grades them..lol but it's helpful anyway. so, just do it.) Go over the notes and hws a night before the exams. You will get a good grade. I got an A.. He really does a great job in teaching taxation.
Exam was a little tricky, and overall did not do a good job in preparing the class for the exam. Go with someone else if you have a choice.
OUCH! What a final!! Extremely Hard! Gotta be a blackbelt at Tax to pass this class! definately try to pick another professor if possible. didnt even show up for the final >_<
Does not care at all about students. I was around class average for midterm, final was hard and I did not receive my grade back; but overall I received a D. Does not care to help students.
I don't want to pick on the guy but here it goes anyway. exams are hard because he uses the test bank. Questions from the test bank are unclear, especally the T/F. U must make assumptions all through the damn exam, and he won't help you with assumptions. Overall good guy clear lectures, tests are horrible, but the tests are what matters in the end.
O.k. not the easiest course you will ever take. exams are hard, but hell I am very happy with my A-. Took down my acconting g.p.a alittle but I am very happy. If you like studying tax, then take him for tax.
I dont recommend him. He never write down on white board anything, give us nothing to prepare study (lecture notes, sample exam, etc..). His exams are too tricky. He made my major GPA go down. You should take other professor if you can. I really hate his style.
Great tax professor, if you are interested in tax, he is the person to take. b/c of that class i'm in baruch's 5-year MS taxation program
Professor Melnik rewards hard work. If you show interest, and do your diligence, the class is quite enjoyable. His dry sense of humor makes this class a joy to be in. You reap what you sow!
Great Professor. Pay attention to his lectures, he explains everything in detail, and clearly. Will re-iterate if you don't understand something. This is a difficult class to take in general, so study hard. I definitely recomment this professor.
He is funny and pays attentuion to students, but all that does not matter. What matters is how you did on his triky exam. Gives just 2 exams a semester 45% each and there is nothing you can do. Class average was a C- after the first exam, so most of the people got screwed at the end. I'm sure if ppl got a good grade, but most ended up with C.
1 midterm, group presentation, and final. Yes, the exams are tricky, but Melnik goes over EVERYTHING you need to know. Tax is a complicated subject, and the material is extensive. He reviews material until the class gets it, and answers all questions. He stresses taking notes; he explains subjects that are not so clear in the book. GREAT!
He's a worst person I've ever met! I wonder how he can be a professor. He has no respect for students.
Good personality, pretends to know everything, probably does, helps students understand certain subject. when it comes to tests, totally different story. trickiest exams I have seen. even after midterm he assures you would end up with a higher grade, homeworks do not count at all. participation doesn't either. he is horrible as a professor. run away
He gives only 2 exams - mid and final, must use study guide to study for the test, the test questions cover only the material covered in class. homework almost in every class - except when u have test,
gives a midterm and final and 4 quizes. harsh attitude but the exams and quizes were easy. HOWEVER, the final was a seperator of grades so don't ease up even if you got in the 90s for the quizes and midterm. ended up with an A- for the course with minimal studying
Alot of hw 2 exams and a few quizes. gave a review sheet before each exam and consisted mainly of hw questions, quizes and lecture notes.. you really need to read the book and attend class to do well. ended up with a- for class
Everything you need to know is covered in class & taking notes is easy b/c he repeats the important parts. I relied a lot on my notes. The midterm was pretty tricky & i got only an 85 but the final was a breeze & ended up with an A-. The class environment was friendly & he made lots of jokes and used lots of funny relevant examples.
Most students I know in this class ended up with A or A-. Previous comments are true, take him if you want your life easier.
These reviews are not consistant. SOmeone says hes the best professor, someone says he is the worst. I believe students that do not want to study, rate the professors bad. Please do not write anything if you never went to class and these reviews are from the first class!!!
Taking good notes is a MUST in his course. They are essential in order to do well on the exam. I only got 78 on first mideterm because I did not have good notes due to my LD. Well, I got a note take and it made a huge difference. I ended up with an A-. He is very knowledgeable and respects students. I would take him again.
He just get the test from the online quiz and it's exactly the same. It's not fair because some people access the file and they have the test bank and exactly the same on the test. Basically those people did well have the test bank and they hacked it.
The exam is so not fair! I am dropping this class. This professor is very cocky and phoney.
too much is going on with this class right now. It's such a disappointment!!! First of all, this cheating issue. If it took place there is nothing can be done to change it right now. We can only hope the next exam will be more fair. Second, the elimination of 5 questions will honor those students who didn't get the right answer. (to be continued..)
it means, if you got the right answer, your grade will go down. And if you made mistakes your grade will go up. It doesn't make any sense. Third, how many students are going to drop the class? It will affect the overall performance, and students in the middle will be at the bottom. Btw, does anyone have #of questions that are going to b eliminated?
I am dropping too. There are 5 questions to be eliminated.
Its fair if he eliminates the questions, they should not have been there on the first place! Prof. says exam is based only on material we covered in class. 2 questions were from ch.6 we did not cover. One ?n was really unclear, and you could not ask for claryfication on the exam. So its fair to elim
oh man.........so many ppl just start hatting him after the first midterm which is 45% of the final grade.once you mess that you got no life for this class. Seemed OKAY till the exam, but experienced horrible after the only midterm..be aware and read the below comments guys. Tax is not easy though with any professor. You got to work hard..gd luck
damn, i read the comments and registered for the class and now i m repenting a lot...he just BOMBed my whole semestr. I m doing all well with other class and i had to get W grade for TAX. He doent even know wat to put on exam &what not to. Gave 5 questins never covered in class. class everate was in 60s for the 1st midterm whi is 45% if final grade
The business world is all about getting ahead. Cheaters are everywhere. Get over it and worry about your own grades. Do better next time. He is a fair professor and he did what he thought was fair. Just study harder from the book and his examples, and you will do fine.
He is very busy man so if you want 2 c him after class he never available. exams were very hard. material he didn't cover in the class also in Exam. there is no reviews before midterm or finals. we have to do group thing which he never mentions in class till the week before due day. he is very irresponsible person also he never reply for emails.
Very hard class. For the tests, I suggest studying quantity over quality from the notes. He will ask you like 5 questions on the exam on something he spent 5 minutes discussing in class, but they will not be that hard. STUDY EVERYTHING FROM THE NOTES. Kind of irresponsible, but he was teaching a very large class so you can't blame him.
Very fair grader. Curves a lot. Don't worry if you have a bad grade on the midterm.
If you get a chance to be in Melnik's class, don't lose it!!!! He is very intelligent and funny. He always has amazing stories to tell that make you remember the material. All you have to do is to read carefully the parts of the book he discusses in class because questions will be from there and most important from your notes.
hes a good person and tries to make tax enjoyable but its just hard !! u think u know it until after the exam u realize u didn't know anything. he teaches goood but the questions on the exam are totally different. i say, study the other classes' exams too....
Straightforward, clear, fair. There's a lot of material, but he tries to simplify it and you just have to make sure to practice with the problems. His sense of humor helps keep you awake during class. Not so good with responding to e-mails in a timely manner though.
Very good Professor. He will explain everything very clearly. Midterm was little tricky but final was really hard. Still a good professor overall.
This professor use tax question that is based on 2008 tax rate,on mid & final, which its totally different from what we have cover on class. Overall he's a funny prof. his mid-term is alright, but final is terribly tricky. A big presentation with 10 to 14 people which he didn't even mention until it is near the due date, hes very careless.
He don't care about his student, he doesn't reply email. Some what hard Mid-term, got average of 70ish for the whole class, tricky and hard final, he uses tax rate form 2008 instead of 2009 that we have cover in class, his question is never made up by him, probably copy and paste out of some website.
He never cared about his students. He assigned the homework but never correct it by himself. No notes and no PPT in the class. 1 midterm+1 final. No ideas for prepare the exams.
Midterm was alright. Got a 38/40. Final was EXTREME. Got a 32/42....... He doesn't reply to emails so if you have questions, you must ask right after class. I enjoyed his teaching style but it was a tough class. Especially the final!
his class is funny, but the exams are hard and NOT funny at all!!He even gives ambiguous questions on the test but he never answers questions during the tests.so good luck if you take him.
You have to go to every class and write perfect notes since that is what you'll be tested on. Homework for every class however unsure if he even reads them, presentation that I didn't even do . I did every hw, had about a 75% test average and got a-
he is smart who makes the class very interesting often relating to practical examples. You will look forward to the classes. Tests are very fair.
He is very knowledgeable professor, who has tons of experience that’s why his lectures are so interesting. Tests you only on what he gave in his lectures. Highly recommend.
This professor's lectures are extremely interesting and he uses examples to really help you understand the material. It's a 4 hour class but it's never boring. The textbook contains a lot of material but he only tests you on what he covers in class. Overall, I highly recommend taking professor Melnick's class.
Nothing is perfect, but he is an exception: smart, to-the-point, great sense of humor, the natural ability to teach! he can teach even unteachable students, for real!
WAYS TO GET GOOD GRADE.JUST PREPARE FOR MIDTERM AND FINAL, OTHER THINGS ALTHOUGH, HE SAYS HE IS GONNA ACCOUNT BUT HE DOESN'T. GROUP WORK AND HOMEWORK SHARING IN THE CLASS BY PRESENTING IN CLASS DOESN'T COUNT AT ALL. TIPS TO GET BEST GRADE, STUDY FROM TEST BANK FROM SOME OTHER AUTHOR, NOT FROM TEXTBOOK.
Buy study guid unless you are ready to devote your 10 hours per week to do reading and HW. HW review is kinda useless b/c he never distribute the answer. I reviewed my midterm and concluded that if you buy study guide, study it, and take very good note in class, you dont have to read whole chapter and review the HW (even tho HW is 10 % of grade.
TAKE HIM. He is the BEST. He is not like all the boring accounting profs we have at this school. Yeah, u got to devote 5 hours a week to studying for this class - that's not the end of the world. TAKE HIM PLEASE. you will not regret it. you will love him. he is funny. its a pleasure to have him as a professor. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE GOOD NOTES !!!! :)
Midterm was hard. FINAL WAS HARDER. Be prepared. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Great professor.
He makes a lot of jokes and tells that exams are bases on his lectures that IS NOT TRUE. Midterm is hard and the final is harder. It is always good to read your book, in that case, why we need him?..
Loved him! his classs is so interesting and very informative. You have to come to class becasue his midterms are based on his notes but its useful to read the book too. Final is not cumulative! Midterm was on 3 chapters, final on 4! Only got a 74 on midterm but i did well on the final and he still gave me an A- Take him if u want to learn !!
Great lecturer. Has great and vast knowledge of tax principals and exerts it to the class. I really did learn a lot, however, the tests are very hard. You have to study from the textbook everything. In my opinion, its worth it, because you'll come out a real tax expert (minus the tax credits)
really funny guy, makes class entertaining as opposed to straight lecture, two exams worth 45% each, class participation/attendance/speech 10%, midterm was tricky but doable, i highly recommend him, he covers a 1 chapter every 2 weeks on average, gives funny stories to explain the tax situations, also 5-8 hw questions per week, time consuming.
I am so glad that I took this class with prof.Melnik,he is the best!He makes the class intresting, you will never get bored! The grades for the midterm were posted on BB one hour after the exam!!! Very smart, crystal clear, organized, cares about the students. Thank you prof.Melnik!!!!
Read the book, study the examples in the book, know the homework problems inside and out, take good notes and you should be fine. Curve is generous so don't be so uptight if you get a B on a test.
Even though during the semester everything looks OK-funny professor,a lot of jokes, excellent midterm, wait until final. No outline,no feedback, questions more looks like IQ test, not taxation.Doesn't matter you study hard-questions so tricky, you'll think only-what does he mean?Completely ignores student email. No access to final result.Don't trust him.
Until the midterm exam, everything is perfect. Then he brings in a nonsense, time-consuming group project that is not even accounted for (same goes for hw assignments). Also, the final exam is an absolute shocker. There was no generous curve everyone spoke about, there was no curve at all.
Probably the best accounting professor I have ever had in Baruch! The class was extremely interesting and I learned a lot!
He is funny and nice. He explain s the topic very clearly. However, his exams are tricky. There are only two exams. So make sure you get the good grade for the first one. The final sh super difficult, don't dream that you can get the good grade to cover the mistake from the first exam. HW is only helpful for understanding the topic not the exam.
I wish i never took his class
Material he covers in class is super simple. However, his exam are super tricky..
The 1st midterm doable, but final is a killer. Make sure you study ahead of time. It's a lot of info. Textbook is VERY expensive but it's a must. Do the HW, it's good practice for the exam. 10% is attendance, HW, participation and group project. Midterm and final worth 45% each. He's good at what he does but I wouldn't take him again.
By far one of the best professors at Baruch. He makes you fall in love with taxation. His teaching skills are just perfect. Yes, his exams are hard but fair. Just practice homework and test banks that he recommends at the beginning of the semester. Must take, or else you miss an opportunity to learn from the best.
Lawyer material. Great public speaking skills and will get the class engaged because he's tries to make it interesting. As a professor... he's not responsive to emails and students don't seem to be his biggest concern. So if you're a student who prefers these kind of professors go for it. I attended all classes but he doesn't care.
The only professor that actually makes me like going to class its more of a standup comedy show! Hes great and hilarious wouldnt recommend anyone else!
GPA KILLER!
You have to read ahead and do the homework on the material that wasn't covered in class. Lectures are interesting, but not enough practicing for exam.
Great lecturer to keep class engaged. 1st midterm was doable, but final was a killer. Material is only on what's covered in class, but make sure to read the textbook for details. 45% midterm, 45% final, 10% attendance. Got a 75 on miderm, 70 on final, and ended up with a C. NO curve.
The best professor at Baruch!!! Knows his stuff. Huge class but he was able to answer all questions and make everything clear. Make sure to study his notes. ALL of them!! A is attainable. Love this man and already miss the class.
Yeah his stories are great, but other than that the lectures are 2+2 and ABC, while the tests are Egyptian hieroglyphics. If you want a good grade, you either remember every single little piece of the text book (related to the notes) as the test questions are extremely tricky, or find the right test bank. Final is killer, so ace the 1st test!
He is the best prof. at Baruch for tax. He makes class very interesting and has a good sense of humor too. However, his tests are tricky but not extremely hard. If you study and put your time then you can get good grade in his class. The best thing about him is he only tests students from his lecture. Therefore, be sure to write good notes.
Professor Melnik is awesome and gives great lectures. But exams are extremly tough, so make sure to take very good notes!!! plus read chapters in the book. Midterm (45%), final (45%); and homework+attendance (10%).
Good professor. Take good notes since that's what you will be tested on. Try to record his lectures, will help you so much. Test is fair but couple of tricky questions.
He is the most exciting and knowledgeable professor I have ever seen!! I enjoyed every moment of his lectures! In terms of his exams, I would say he is very much fair because he only questions you based on what he covered in lecture !
Prof is funny but his lectures are not helpful for exams. He does NOT teach by chapters. No review before exams. Make good notes or record his lecture in order to prepare for the exams, otherwise you don't know what will be on the exam. He doesn't reply any emails because it's huge class. 1 midterm, final, boring group project--presentation & paper
Professor Melnik is great for teaching Taxation. He will motivate you to apply your conceptual knowledge of taxation in real life. His exams are hard but if you listen to his lectures carefully and grasp the concept of the homework by heart you will be golden. He will not overburden you by assigning too much work, so you won't regret.
You need to be prepare well for the test. Dont expect any points for participation, homework or group project as he explains in the beginning of the semester. he grades 50% midterm and 50% final.
Do not listen to him when he's saying that he is going to curve the final. He does not! Your grade will be calculated BASED on the midterm and the final ONLY, which will be worth 50% each. There is NO curve at all! Does not grade the homework, the presentation or even care about attendance. (which is worth 10% on the syllabus)
Professor Melnik sure is entertaining during lectures with his personal stories, but when it comes to grading and reviewing the important materials, he is very unorganized and not at all helpful. 2 50% worth exams are tough to perform well on, and in addition the group project and hw did not count on the final grade either. I don't recommend him.
I'm seriously ashamed to have put in effort to make recordings and listen to them over and over when people just studied some test banks and did better than me. I know that my grade is a more accurate reflection of my ability but it's not fair that the professor didn't take the initiative to make the exam stretch our minds in a unique way.
Professor Melnik is a nice person. His lectures are funny and interesting. However, he is a tough grader, and do not give chance of extra credits. His lectures are poor, so you need to keep up with the reading assignments. No curve to help students with grade. He asks for participation in class. He gives homework from current and following chapt
Prof Melnik's class was enjoyable. He really understands taxation with many real life examples and he inspired people (including me) to take this career. Plenty of HW and attendance for almost every class + group project. He made the midterm easy to get good feedback but the final was tough. He doesn't curve at all and barely respond to email.
He is tough grader! his Tests Worth 45% and they are really tough!
One of the best professors in Baruch. His lectures are actually interesting he keeps you awake and engaged in the material. I actually looked forward to class. A lot of real life Tax lessons as well. Make sure to take ALOT of notes as he speaks! I got a 77 on the midterm and 82 on the final ended up with a B+ so curve does help! Exams are tricky!
One of the best professors I'll honestly ever have in my life. He taught us lessons outside of just tax, and showed us ways that we could use what we learned. Amazing professor and would DEFINITELY reccomend. (P.s he got a standing ovation from us during our last class.)
He is good at teaching but his tests r way harder than what he taught! Also he is a tough grader.
The best thing you take his class is the priceless life experience he shares in class. He is kinda not very approachable (feel that he doesn't value those he thinks is "nonsense" questions to him), but he earns what he gets. Very smart type of guy. Take him, he real life lecture is more important.
Textbook is definitely key because I believe he uses the test bank for his exams. If you don't like sitting in the front of the classroom, it's gonna hurt you because his mic and accent are hard to understand from afar. He has a group project and homeworks, but like many people have said, I don't think they count.
Really a great professor, teaches you about life not just tax. I enjoyed his lectures however he only grades you on two tests: the midterm and final! Beware, the tests are tough and SUPER tricky. He gives hw but never grades it (I never did a single one) I flunked the midterm but did decent on the final so I got a C.
Homework doesn't matter, you'll never see a grade from it. He's the laziest professor in the whole school. If he cared he'd be one of the best.
Good luck taking him, as many said he explains things very well but when it comes test, he confuses the F out of it!
He only grades your 2 tests, midterm and final! we did homework and group projects and presentation but there was no grade for it! he is lazy! good thing he always lets u go home early.
What he talks about in class is not relevant to the exams. His tests are 39 multiple choice that dont resemble his lecturers. Your grade is based off midterm and final alone. There is no grade for the homework or presentation. Would not recommend. Online lectures that are too long to listen to...
Not hard to get an A because he uses testbanks, but other than that you won't learn anything from him. He mostly talks how successful he is and how smart he is. He is an arrogant professor who doesn't deserve to teach a class, a specially of that magnitude. He gives homework but never checks them. 1 midterm & 1 final 50% each.
He decided to take it easy this semester and turn this into a 'hybrid' class. W got stuck with 2 hour recorded lectures that leave you even more confused after reading the book. Full of himself, a big waste of your time. Don't expect to learn anything particularly useful, just get your friend's old testbanks and self-study. Nothing is graded.
Skip all class, attend just two final, no homework, no study, memorizing right test bank (question and answer only), ended up with an A.
Worst professor ever!!!! Doesnt teach, hes full of himself; hes always talking about his accomplishments. Do not take him unless you have the test bank. I studied from the textbook for the first exam and failed. I cheated from the test bank on the final and passed. Hes exams come straight from the test bank. You can find the test bank online.
He is awful. He brags about his achievement and never teaches well. He tells story of firing his own Tax3300 Prof when he was Baruch student because that Prof used testbank. But I realized prof Melnik's test come from the test bank too!I don't know how anyone like him could be a chairperson of a department. Don't take him!
Worse class i have taken, does not even teach much talks a lot about his achievements, makes you read the textbook and assigns homework from the book. He has a good habit not to come once other week and makes the class "online". I would not recommend this prof!
This professor is the worst, he did a review for the final exam two days before the final, and he has the audacity of putting the one and a half hour video review four hours before the final exam. Avoid him, he dont teach a single problem, he just talk about life, take a professor that actually teaches so you can prepare for the REG of the CPA.
Not good professor. He sent a message claiming that he posted grades. Grades are not up 2 days post his email. His lectures are ridiculous and filled with fluff. I wish Baruch could live upto its "standards" and get serious but also educated professors. Enough with the dummies.
We had just three sections in class, except two exams. When I registered for the class, it was not offered as online or hybrid. Overall, professor does not teach, but it is one of the easiest A's you can get in Baruch.
Very interesting lectures, too pity most of them online through semester. Hard exam nothing like homework and very subjective grader. We were supposed to get 10% from our homework, well thanks for counting nothing fro me professor Melnik and lowing my grade tremendously. Not recommended by any means, the least transparent professor I've had.
Don't take him. The exam is so tricky. He change TB questions. Class average is failing grade.
I thought I signed up for a hybrid class. This guy does one class every other week. This guy doesn't use testbank anymore. He changes the majority of the testbank. You follow the TB, you will definitely get a failing grade.
Don't take him. At least don't take him at the last semester before graduation. Self study is highly required. Testbank is no longer useful.
His lectures are great! He found a way to present the material that is dry and boring in an engaging way. His lectures will make you laugh. The material will stick because it's presented as a story. Watch all of his lectures! Do not miss his classes. Submit your homework on time and volunteer in class (extra credit). His tests are tricky.
Dont just do the test bank. You need to understand it too. Pratice it and understand the questions and youll do fine. He changes the questions so if you wanna do well you need to understand every question from the test bank
Bad Professor ever at Baruch!! Don't take him! He doesn't care about you at all. Full of himself! Never teach properly and very lazy! He cares only the money from the students & makes them sign up as much as possible and fail them all. Horrible! Thought Baruch is known for the best business school in the city. I don't think so!
How to succeed in his class: Don't read the entire chapters but only what was covered; watch all of his videos before the exams; read the testbanks and understand them all. But only read those, that you covered to save some time. I woke up too late and ended up with B, but his exams weren't difficult if you read what you supposed to.
This is THE LEGEND. Hands down the best and most polite and respectful professor ever, who embodies what its like to attend the glorious Baruch. Unhappy with your midterm score that makes up almost half your grade? Don't worry, it will probably change 3 times. Email him a question? Check the lecture. He is the NotMyJob of professors. A Tax Mad Lad.
I never thought i would encounter the worst of the worst professors. He should be ashamed to be called a professor. Very rude, angry, unprofessional, child like behavior. Unfortunately he is the only option for Tax. Only retirement would save you from this unstable man child. BTW he does not teach (I feel sorry for Sabrina, she has to deal with him
In a class where you should be learning about the current tax law, you will get pre-recorded lectures made at least 2 years ago covering the old law because why not?
The people giving bad reviews are students who expect to be handed an easy A. He tries his hardest to keep the course fair for all students and his lectures are very helpful. He is funny to those with a sense of humor. The class isnt meant to be easy so dont expect an easy A, however he is a good choice because he teaches the topics very well.
The pre-recorded lectures can be 2+ hours each. But do yourself a favor and watch all of them entirely because he breaks down the concepts and gives examples. The concepts covered in the lectures are in the exams, and not everything in the textbook is. Tax class is not meant to be easy, but effort will help you earn a good grade.
Eh. He is disrespectful and treats students like children. He gets very defensive when asked a simple question. Two exams each worth 45% and homework/group project worth 10%. He posts prerecorded lectures from 2018 and tbh theyre not very useful you must read textbook. Midterm average was a 71. I never watched his videos and managed to get an A.
The professor is just useless. Can't teach at all. You have to watch his years old pre-recorded lectures and teach yourself tax laws. Exams are also tricky as hell.
Worst professor I've ever taken, if you can even call him one because he literally just sent us prerecorded lectures and called it a day. Read the book because if you have questions to ask he'll answer you (if even) in the most condescending voice ever. Out of the entire semester, I've only ever seen him do an actual "meeting" twice.
He is so lazy he doesn't even teach. His little assistant does everything for him. When the midterm average for the class was a 50, he sent out an email saying that it was perhaps because we are focusing on other classes instead. like no old man, if the class average sucks, it's a reflection on your terrible teaching skills.
His teaching style is so ineffective. Talk through heavy concepts without any visual aids. Sad how he is the only option for most students.
idk what people expect tax to be, tax is very clear cut so its hard to hold students hands. His lectures are detailed and really funny, I only used the lectures and didnt read the textbook at all. Had a group project with 20% extra credit if ur group presented. Less live classes than I hoped but its nice to be able to rewatch lectures before exams
Thankfully this class doesn't have a minimum grade requirement. Tough as hell class. For those of you expecting quizlet or Chegg, don't do it. Everything question was tailored by Melnik himself. Only thing quizlet was helpful for was understanding homework. Exams are 90% of this man's class, so if you fail, drop it.
Professor Melnik does not teach. You will have to teach yourself. We had class every Friday, but we hardly saw him. I suggest reading the chapters, doing practice questions and making a study group with your classmates. That really helped me.
This class is extremely hard and it doesnt help when the professor isnt present most of the time and tells you to consult his assistant instead. When you ask questions he may tell you he doesnt want to go over it. He gave us a project but no one in the class had motivation to do it because it was a small portion of the grade. Self-study.
Worst professor I've had the misfortune of taking. Treats students like trash and always has his assistant do everything for him. Only "teaches" by posting two-year-old video lectures. Baruch needs more competent tax professors. It's ridiculous that most students have no choice but to take him.
AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! thank me later. He posted lectures from 2 years ago that is not in line with current tax laws. If you want to pass this class you better be prepared to read the textbook. If thats something you dont want to do then avoid
Worst Professor I have ever had. He didn't teach anything; he posted 2 years ago recording a lecture, he didn't show up in class. We hardly see him for a total of 2-3 hours the whole semester if you can ignore this professor and take another one.
Sabrina (his TA) should be teaching the class, since he directs all questions and inquires to her. Old videos as "teaching material". Loves to hear himself talk.
He doesn't teach. He posts older YouTube videos from when he was teaching in person which makes it very difficult to ask questions. He also is not very accessible. The entire class is made for you to teach yourself. He also doesn't answer students questions very well, I feel he makes the subject more difficult because he "KNOWS IT SO WELL"
Very rude when students have questions. His lectures are prerecorded from years ago. 2 exams worth 45%, HW/project worth 10%. He never shared how much HW oject was worth individually ver gave out grades for it. I missed some HW bc I got Covid& he didn't care to let me make it up. Exam avg was 53% &he didn't curve. Lowest grade he gives is C-
do not take this guy for tax please, take another professor, itll be worth it, thats all i have to say
Just avoid him please. He only do Q&A live lecture and you only meet him less than 2 times a month, or non even. Half of the grade is midterm and final, 10% hw. He provides old videos to teach you which isnt good due to changing tax law. He doesnt teach at all. His TA does all the emailing and work. The only tax prof. Baruch is a scam.
this guy is the worst. he rarely has live sessions and sends old youtube videos of past lectures which have all the wrong tax codes since they change yearly. I had to read the book and understand the laws thoroughly in order to get a slightly above average grade on the midterm. you can self study this class can work for you.
Converted to online due to covid, and had to watch recorded videos as lectures. Each lecture class has 1-2 hours of lecture video. Tests were hard, so you gotta read the textbook instead of solely depending on his videos. Nice prof and easy to reach, just not the way he makes the test. WAY TOO HARD
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR HE IS HORRIBLE DO NOT TEACH ANYTHING
All you need to do is take two exams and do one homework assignment per week. the exams are 45% each. Your goal should be to perform above the class average since the class is curved. Test are multiple choice and dont try to cheat it is a waste of time really. Focus on reading the chapters and you should be okay. Most people will do bad on exams.
DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Literally avoid at all cost. 2 exams make up 90% of ur grade . The exam are extremely difficult. He doesnt even teach, his assistant is who u talk to the most. He has old YouTube videos.
The class was based on two exams, a group project, and a homework assignment each week. Class wasn't mandatory and his assistant did most of the work. Save your GPA
Baruch needs to hire more tax professors, this guy is lazy, doesn't teach, and communicates through his TA like a weirdo. Ignore all the 2+ star reviews on here because they were probably written by him and are NOT at all true. He says not to take him again if you "fail" the class as if he isn't one of two options.
WORST PROFESSOR: Outdated YouTube recordings will be teaching you through the semester. If you're lucky enough to see him its for Q&A were he's clearly annoyed by the fact that students have questions. He's not aware of what's in the HW so you're on your own, plus whatever you may need you shall ask his assistant because he can't be bother. !!RUN!!
As usual, Melnik didn't try this semester.. like the past reviews, all he did was give you links to his old 2018 YouTube lecture videos and you don't get much out of them. Live recitations were only for student Q&A purposes and pretty much was just him talking about his life. 2 exams were worth 45% each... gl ya'll... I srsly regret taking him....
There's a certain teaching style for this class and it just wasn't for me. GPA took a hit but honestly I'm just glad it's over. Peace and love Only thing I will say is that tax 3300 should have a wider variety of professors.
The only time you'll hear from him is with three year old YouTube videos that don't even apply to current tax code. He advises students to consult his TA with questions instead of answering them himself, and he gets visibly annoyed when answering questions. Tests are graded 45% each with homework, group project, and attendance making up 10%. AVOID!
I am advising you to save your GPA, time, and money because that weirdo wastes your time with self-study and practically forwarding questions to his TA I will regret not to take with him. If you want to study tax I would take tax with a different professor.
The worst professor that exists at Baruch, he teach the old tax code with his 3 year old lectures and doesnt answer questions. The grading policy isnt distributed so easy to fail if something goes wrong In one of 2 exams which are 45% each. I took the course 2 times and was able to get A-on final attempt as there was no other options to choose.
You have to study hard to pass this class. Exams are tricky make sure to read carefully. Questions are very confusing. If you get above average on both exams you will get an A or A- in this class. His lectures are on YouTube and are not updated. To pass you will need to read the book and listen to his lectures. Get 90+ on all homework assignments.
THE WORST!! STAY AWAY FROM HIM! He doesn't teach, he doesn't care. His only goal is to ruin your GPA and that's about it.
Worst professor you can imagine this guy doesn’t teach and posts his in person teachings from 10 years ago and tells us to watch it. His exams are terrible; class averages are like 10/40 and if you do better than ur peers you’ll get an A. Don’t take him please if you want to do good or even pass.
Great lectures and overall very fair.
I would highly advise you not to take this class, unfortunately, he was the only TAX professor available. He gets paid to do the minimum, he does not care about his students. During 1 month the class only met once online, get gives out his old 2007 tax videos that are not within today's rules. This guy does NOT CARE to see his students succeed.
Gave outdated lectures. Have to read the textbook for updated information, numbers, and procedures but the lectures do a good job of explaining some concepts. I paired reading the textbook for updated info and listening to lectures to get a good grade.
The professor would rather give outdated lectures of previous classes than teach the material personally to students again. Imagine if every other professor did that, they'd be fired immediately. I don't know how he's the only one who gets to do this. Only meets once every other week or so. Extremely test heavy, 90% of your grade is on two tests.
i would say he is the worst i got. didnt care about student at all. exams are tough, less timed and just uploads old lectures. he is a very busy person so he dont have time for his student. skip him if u can
2h left for the final grade submission deadline, and nothing. Post outdated youtube videos for lectures and always has an attitude. His "assistant" is the one doing the heavy work. Not one care in the world for the students success, and constantly reminds people not to take him again our they "will fail". He should consider retirement.
I don't typically post reviews, but this professor is terrible at instructing. He would post old lectures on blackboard for students to review. He does not care about his students and delegated all of his responsibilities to TA. Exams are more tough and have a shorter time limit. AVOID if you don't want to ruin your GPA.
We were required to read the chapter and do the homework in advance and then watch the corresponding recorded lecture when it was posted. Expect weekly homework, midterm, final and a group project. Exams were based only on content covered in the video lectures so be sure to make your notes from the lectures. Overall I think he was fair.
I think he is a terrible "lecturer". His videos are almost useless. He is too full of himself. Brags a lot about completely unnecessary things. I'm about to graduate, he has been my worst experience at Baruch. This class was absolutely not worth my time, even less so my money.
Professor is not the best but if you watch his lectures to learn the concepts then read the textbook for further understanding you will do well. The class average for his exams aren't usually high so the trick is to out perform your classmates as he gives final exam grades based on your standing amongst the class.
def avoid at all costs. he does not teach and is very full of himself. He is essentially robbing the school your tuition money because he uses decade old youtube vids as his lectures. you could tell he is doing this strictly for side income. bad bad bad
You got to get ready for the test
This class shows that this is a online class. But, we don't really meet; it's more like a asynchronous class. You have to learn everything by yourself. He just send you old videos to make you learn by yourself. He doesn't really answer your questions.
You need to learn everything by yourself, and he doesn't teach at all. The review session is not helpful. You have to do the homework before he teaches that class, and the homework only has one attempt. The midterm and final don't have a "go back" button.
OMG, This is a very hard class and the professor doesn't teach at all. He only post old videos, and he is very vague when we ask him questions. The midterm and final review session is not helpful at all. This class gonna ruin my GPA so bad.
killed my interest of tax
Doesn't teach, uses outdated YouTube videos. Makes his assistant do all the work. Doesn't answer questions. Gaslights on how he teaches very well. I wish I had taken the night class instead.
His method of teaching isn't great but he still gets the material across. It's really easy to do good in his class since most people in the class are incompetent
If you are able to understands the study materials by yourself w/o help of a teacher, then this is not a tough course.I must admit he didn't overwhelm us with loads of materials, he graded fairly enough. The extra credit group presentation was easy, he didn't expect us to do something extra ordinary. Overall if you read, you will get a good grade.
Professor Melnik's TAX3300 class can be challenging, but with the right approach, you can succeed. While his teaching style may not be for everyone, using resources like the textbook, Unstuck study, and study groups can help you grasp the material. Stay on top of the work, and you'll likely get a good grade.
Can't believe bro hasn't shaved his unibrow ever
I must admit that this class is very challenging in general. Tests are hard. If u want to pass this class and move on, be sure to stay within the class avg on both midterm and final. Graded on standard distribution curve. Thank god this doesn't count towards accounting GPA. I'm just so glad that I managed to pass this course.
Read the textbook if you want to do well in the class. The lectures to be honest are outdated and potentially can make you even more confused so I would prioritize the textbook as your source of information to do well in the course. Reach out to Sabrina if you have any questions because he's basically not accessible outside of class.
He is not accessible outside of class, does not teach any materials everything is pre recorded, 2 tests that are 45% each of your grader. Im not sure how he is the only teacher for tax. Ruined my GPA.
Use outdated pre-recorded youtube lecture videos. Tests are 45% each and performance curved. Tests were worded confusing; LOTS OF TYPOS, short time limit, and you can't go back/forth between questions. “Extra credit” was only 0.9%. Has the audacity to say don't retake him if you fail as if he's not the only one Baruch has to offer. Disappointing.
He doesn't teach anything and the textbook is dense, super long, and confusing. All he does is post outdated lectures that are boring and unhelpful, and you can't even see the board when he's explaining. I tried to self teach but it wasn't enough. What a waste of time. I wanted to learn but he didn't teach. Ruined my 4.0 gpa.
Paranoid about cheating that he makes the tests confusing. Meets once a month and ends meeting in < 15 mins if no questions are asked. Not reachable outside of class. Final grades on submission deadline date so we can't complain. Also messed up grades and won't respond. He gave some guy an A- even though he scored lower on midterm/final than me.
if you want to learn anything about tax & care about your gpa, don't take his class. the worst professor I've ever had. his assistants handle everything, does not teach (holds "q&a meetings" that last 10 mins), attached videos 10 years ago & has not updated anything since. huge ego, loves to talk about himself & posts all grades a week after final.
Grades horribly, impossible to reach as he never responds to emails, his assistant handled everything. He complained all the time & would repeatedly say not to take him again if you didn't do well in his class. Learned nothing. Some people just really shouldn't teach.
horrible... 0/10 experience
His old class recordings are decent, but some numbers are outdated. Sometimes hw are on topics he never taught. He's not organized. Whole concept of presentation is optional but it's part of your grade makes no sense. For a prof that skips so many sessions, I find it extremely disrespectful that he can't “find” the time to have all groups present.
Pure luck honestly idk Every little point matters. U can have score 88 and get C and friend can have score 89 and get A
The midterm avg. was 23.6/41, and the final avg. was 34.11/48. Grades are curved at the end as per department policy. However, the prof. messed up the grades: students who had lower exam scores had a better letter grade than students with higher exam scores. I'm not sure how many students were affected, but the prof. does not seem to be fixing it.
The prof. does give a list of textbook sections that will not be on the exam, but he gives it too late. There are always 1-5 questions on the exam that are NOT covered in the video lectures, so if you have time after making the best notes possible based on the lectures, then look at the list the prof gives and study the sections not on that list.
The exam review videos are pretty much useless, but I would still watch them once, and note down any differences between what was said in the review video versus what was said in the lecture videos and textbook. Ask about the differences during the exam Q&A session or office hours. Go to office hours after exams to confirm they graded it properly.
Most exam questions are based on lectures, so watch the lectures first and write notes. Then, update the notes using the textbook. In your notes, include HW and textbook examples that relate to the video material, so you can use them in the open-book exams. Exam questions are super vague. You only get 2 min per question, and you cannot go back.
For the project, the group has to write a 4-6 pg paper on a tax law to change. The paper and an explicit request to present it must be emailed to his assistant. I never got a grade, and the prof. didn't really listen to the presentations, so just present for credit. BUT, your group has to submit EARLY because you're not guaranteed to present!
There are 4-8 weekly HW problems on the chap. the prof. teaches a week AFTER it's due (only 1 attempt). The HW will be on topics that the prof. never teaches in videos, so you're forced to read or bounce around the entire chap. The prof. assigns all his work to his assistant, so office hours are conducted by and emails are sent to his assistant.
There are Q&A sessions during class time whenever the prof. decides to hold one (every 2 to 3 weeks, recorded, not mandatory to attend). He DOES NOT teach content. He posts recorded lectures from when he taught in-person: these are outdated, so numbers and concepts have changed. The worst part is when the camera never shows what he is writing.
There was a midterm and a final: each worth 45% (total 90%). The last 10% is a COMBO of HW and a group project. There are no extra credit assignments. The exams are online, no lockdown, 40 to 48 questions made up of multiple-choice, T/F, and fill-in-the-blank. While taking the exam, you have to join a Zoom session (no need to turn on cam or mic).
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFF!!! THE WORST PROFESSOR BARUCH HAS. HE DOESN'T GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT THE CLASS OR YOU. THE FINAL GRADES? RUSSIAN ROULETTE!! HE DOES SOME LIVE RECITATIONS , GETS ANGRY WHEN STUDENTS ASK HIM, THE LECTURES ARE SO OUTDATED HE ONLY TALKS ABOUT IS HOW HE MADE IT IN LIFE AND HAS A SUCCESSFUL CAREER.
i dont even want to comment, just take the other professor.
Not enough characters that could explain the abomination of a class he conducts. Does not teach just gives you links to youtube videos that are 6 years old. On top of that you have to spend 200 for textbooks. His exams are a mess and go over barely anything that was in the videos. Save your GPA.
This class is a nightmare, the midterm and Final count for 90% of your final grade, which is ridiculous. We have to self-study and watch outdated videos of him teaching years ago when he had hair. The exams are online, you cannot go back to previous questions. The good news is that he won't teach at Baruch for the Spring 2026 semester.
He is lazy . Does not teach . Gives you videos to watch
The worst accounting professor I've ever met at baruch, does not teach and gives you a bunch of lecture videos he recorded many years ago. Please be prepared to read a lot and expect not getting any feedbacks from him immediately. I wouldn't recommend this professor at all if you try to learn new things.
Prof. Melnik uses lecture videos he recorded years ago, but they are on the material he tests. He holds a Q&A recitation every 2-3 weeks. Office hours are provided often. Class grade is heavily determined by an open-note midterm and final, each being worth 45%, so study the practice questions provided on Cengage and take good notes on the chapters.
Lectures aren't live. He directs everything to his TA. The course is 90% exams, 1 midterm, and 1 final. The last 10% is participation, homework, and a group project. When he assigned the project, he didn't even know how much it was worth yet.... Don't take him.
