Terrible teacher, very biased towards his opinions and shows it. He trys to be helpful but is NOT accomadating and is unclear when he lectures. He also likes to quiz before he lectures, so hit the books. His quiz questions are weird too. He does tell you what he tests on though. I don't reccomend his class, I'm an A student and I hope to get a B.
this teacher is the goofiest guy...the only thing that kept me going in his class was laughing at his hair...the class was really boring and i havent learned anything useful...i would not recommend this teacher. his tests are hard and the lectures are boring...and he says "um" and "uh" constantly! he does not seem like a confident teacher at all!
Miller is an interesting guy! He talks funny but is a nice guy. His class seems easy, but he is a very tough grader. His tests are really random and he assigned strange assignments. Do not reccomend taking his class.
He is the worst teacher I ever had and is the most confussing. It took two months to get a 500 word writing assignment back and his class was never the less boring. The only thing that kept me going was his horrible sense of style, his out of control comb over, and his constant use of the word "umm".
Unfortunately at MJC you'll find a lot of those who don't even read their textbooks but expect to understand, and what's worse, to be entertained. These are the people who go to college not to learn but to have "fun"..I can't believe students would attack a professor based on his looks...how disrespectful! Mr. Miller is very knowledgeable & caring!
Very informative class, Great teacher, people expect to come to school and have a blast sorry thats not the way it works. Mr. Miller recognizes effort and rewards it. Easy grader and so nice! Students are just lazy.
Mr. Miller, I have two words for you..."he's weird". He could really use a speech class and he is unclear on what he wants in the assighments. he is opinionated, though he somewhat tries to keep it out of the classroom. his tests were very easy. -easy class, odd teacher- O ya, and you could hardly hear him because he talked is such a soft voice.
No other teacher I've taken at MJC has managed to pull so much participation out his class. His politial view is obvious yet completely negligible considering how welcoming it is to express opinions. Very interesting lectures. You will get a grade in the class that is exactly equal to the effort you believe you put in, so no surprises.
What all students should know! Boring, opinionated. Way to many papers to do and no work handed back for a very long time. He says you can check your grades on his website but he doesn't post them for weeks. If you dare to take him. Good Luck!
I think you all who are rating Miller on his apprearence are bitter, and immature. I think he was a great teacher and graded fairly. This is an easy class if you do all the work. I highly recommend!
I'm currently, in his online class. I met with him today, he seems kinda unsure of what he's saying but regarding what he wants in assignments is very clear. Just read the instructions and everything will be easy. He only has 1 research paper and 6 online discussion points. I wouldn't say thats a lot
Good teacher
Mr. Miller is an awesome teacher..I learned alot and loved to stay involved because he loves to hear student opinions, you don't know but 20% of your grade is participation and he makes it really comfortable to participate, I loved his teaching skills and learned alot!
miller is a very nice teacher, and very respectable. he pushes you in the class to learn your material. and is a very fair grader. he has kool extra credit assignments and is easy to talk to.
His style is straight outta the 50s! He is pretty decent and easy teacher. Grading was very lenient. Easy A with medium effort.
awesome teacher. one of the best professors on campus for polsci in my opinion. hes a little soft spoken but when he gets into a topic, thers no stopping him. he tells you everything you need to know for a test, quiz, project w/e. i would definetly recommend mr. miller to anyone :D
completely too much work. I told the american politics course online and he required almost a page full of discussions and responses every week along with weekly quizzes on over 20 plus pages of reading. Just alot of WORK!!!!!! especially for a 101 class. helped when asked but hard to work in with the other 15 credits i was taking!!!!!
WOW! He is amazing. I change my major because of this class. Very easy and fun. Grades? Lets put it this way, Even George Bush could get an "A."
I cannot believe people actually attack Mr Miller. I will admit he is a bit of a quiet speaker, but he has no problems whatsoever correcting on a need to basis or formulating class opinions. He cares very much about his students, great teacher. I have an A so far :P
HATED the class. If you aren't interested in politics D0 N0T TAKE! The teacher is cool but the class SUCKED. Study for tests. Buy all the books. READ EVERYTHING! Somewhat interesting. Again, if you aren't interested or understand politics D0 N0T TAKE
Boring. Be prepared to sit and listen, but take notes and study, it's easy. Stick to the subject matter, for when he gets sidetracked he confuses people.
Cannot lecture at all. does not allow students to get into a discussion.
Obviously knows the material, but needs to be a bit louder and take control of the classroom. Biggest problem--a serious time lag in returning assignments. If you like political science, this is a good class as it's very informative..if you're looking to scrape by, this isn't the class for you. Lots of writing involved.
He is a horrible teacher. I took his online class and was shocked how horrible it was. This is my third online class and by far the most horrible one I have taken. He was weird rules for turning in his test. Spare your self the agony and do not take this professor.
Dr. Miller speaks softly, so I would recommend a seat close to the front. The comments that ridicule him for not talking loudly enough are most likely from the slackers that sat at the back of the class and never planned on paying attention in the first place. If you sit in the front half of the room, you will have no problem understanding him.
Mr. Miller is cool! Very easy, if you just read the material assigned. Two test, 6 quizes(drops the lowest quiz).
Took this class online.Pretty easy if you read the material. You will need the textbook in this class.Quizs are multiple choice. One large research paper and one shorter paper. Quizs and discussions.
He was so quiet and never takes control of the class. Sit front if you want a good grade. Study! The class is boring, but you learn a lot!
He's nice and will work with you as much as you need. The reading level is as if he thinks you never looked at a book before and he needs to make up for that in one semester. Other than that the papers are easy enough and so are the tests. If you read you get a good grade.
Everyone who rates Mr. Miller as a bad teacher is obviously a lazy student. He does have a lot of books, but you can skim the material (maybe 10 mins) and be able to still participate. He encourages good discussion and encourages thoughtful opinions. I lean politically opposite to him but he is still one of my favorite teachers I've had.
(I'm also the last rater. Meant to write Poli 101 for that one). This class is great. He teaches about all types of political thought. 3 Writing assignments, but EASY. Not much research, really. Also preps very well for tests, and if you paid attention in class and know how to write a decent sentence, you should get a fairly easy A. I recommend!!
Miller is a good teacher. He is very soft spoken, but he does know what he is talking about. Easy class to pass, just need to keep up on the reading.
I loved professor miller! He is such a nice guy, who knows so much about politics. He teaches in a very unbiased way, which is comforting. The only people who would DISlike this class are slackers or ignorant people. He expects alot, but the work is manageable. This class taught me so much about politics. HIGHLY recommend this professor!
Prof. Miller is a good teacher. He is very soft spoken, but he can be tough and sometimes rude. He has a bad habit of adding terms to the test that he has not discussed. The class itself is kind of useless because as long as you read, you know what the lecture is going to be on. If you bore easily, skip this teacher.
Mr. Miller was a G-r-e-a-t teacher. his class really gets you thinking about polotics!
Took the class online. Avoid by any means necessary. Over 100 pages of reading per week and quizzes mostly based on author's opinions and are every week and worth 5 points. There are at least 6 books for the class. The study questions he gives don't even help towards the quizzes either. There are a few discussion posts. He demands too much
I cannot agree with the previous comment about Professor Miller! He is An AWESOME Professor and so far my favorite!Very easy. There are 3(not 6!) books for this class and we did not read them all.He gives a little reading for a week and then a weekly quiz.I always completed a reading in an hour(it can be too much only to slackers!)
He is very helpful and gives extensions on all assignments,he also gave 2 extra credits.Always willing to help his students,I took this class online and once every week the students can talk to him through Elluminate(like Skype). We had 5 discussions, weekly quizzes, research paper,1 brief assignment, and final quiz. But it was the easiest class ever!
best teacher ever! Really interesting class. The professor is great, loved it!
Excellent Professor! Well organized, especially for an online class. If you have a web cam, his online web chat is awesome, he will answer all questions or review anything you want. His sweet personality makes it so easy to talk to him and he's full of knowledge! If you're looking for an easy A, this is NOT the class for you!
Had him for Political Theory. He's nice and his lectures are usually very interesting, but doesn't like to answer "for" political theorists when you ask questions about them, which sonetimes forces you to make your own interpretations, which you could be graded down for later. Easy A if you read the material or just pay attention. I got away with skipping reading two books entirely and still managed an A.
Awesome teacher. Even though there is a lot of reading involved a lot of his class time is devoted to talking about the readings in student groups as well as your personal opinion on the subject matter. Only about 3 assigned essays and a few essay exams, all really easy. Take this class!!!
His online class is really interesting. If you are interested in Constitutional Law, this is the class to take! Very informational. However, he does take a really long time to grade things (2 months +) and does not give a whole lot of feedback. All in all, a pretty good professor but just very late in getting assignments back.
Absolutely awful teacher. I took him for poli-sci 102 and loved politics prior to taking the course. I am a great writer and easily get As and positive comments on all papers that I write. However, despite that I got As on the tests and quizzes and clearly knew the material, he gave me Bs on nearly every paper. Incomprehensible, ambiguous, and scant
He is passionate about what he teaches. I disliked Political Science, but after taking his class, I've taken a liking to it. There are video chats that are mandatory for a full grade, but can be scheduled whenever you choose. He was very clear and helpful. Definitely recommended!
I have to turn in my transcript this week for universities & I honestly don't know what my grade is because he still hasn't graded our essay from MARCH and we are in May (the semester is over). He continues to slack off every semester & it's ridiculous. (Unfortunately, I have taken quite a few classes w/him because of my major, so I know).
Best online class. Clear and easy to understand- puts up weekly assignments, follows syllubus, online videos and lectures were helpful. He is easy to get a hold of if you need help. I did not have interest in this class at first, but he made it interesting... really enjoyed the discussion board topics-
I wouldn't call the class "easy", per se, but he is very helpful and gives a ton of feedback. I thought his teaching style was excellent, there was a lot of class discussion and the majority of the work was "state an opinion and defend it" instead of right/wrong answers. Arrive promptly, pay attention, and you'll get the grade you earned.
Mr. Miller does a great job of including the students within the discussion. If you choose not to involve yourself in these feedback sessions it may be more difficult to really understand the theory being studied. He definitely wants you to succeed and is willing to answer any questions and offer help.
I've taken Steve many times. Hands down one of the best teacher's i've ever had. Steve knows what he's talking about and is great! Take him and you'll love it!!
This class is everything a political science course should be. There were engaging class debates and discussions that Miller respectfully and considerately moderated. We were Introduced to several texts that I still find meaning in and reflect on. Especially Freire. Miller took his class seriously and doesn't tolerate obvious nonsense.
He's a genuinely nice guy. You can tell he loves when his students are involved and passionate, I had him for both constitution/rights and comparative politics. Debates in both, long papers, you NEED TO PAY ATTENTION and show up! But you will learn a lot about yourself and the world. I got a C for a bad attendance grade in the first, but an A last.
Took the class on California politics & problems. Interesting diversity in the classroom and much of the class was open discussion and debate. Mr. Miller is pretty balanced to an extent but would take him again for another class.
Prof Miller was a wonderful PolSci teacher. His expectations are realistic and he doesn't expect you to know, nor memorize every single thing. He's open to hearing different opinions and even controversial opinions. If you just try you aren't going to fail this class. There was one group assignment.
Prof Miller is a really great teacher. He's not of those type that make you remember every little detail. He has you read it and most of the time asks for your opinion or has you apply whatever you read about. His class was great.
I've really enjoyed having professor Miller as an instructor. He's a great teacher, wants you to get involved into topics covered, which have been interesting and very educational as well as eye-opening. He's easy to follow and so is the material, just do the reading, which it's hard and listen during lectures. Speak your mind, but be respectful.
This class was AMAZING! Yes, there was a lot of reading, but everything we read was fascinating. He does not offer extra credit under any circumstances, but is always willing to help. He grades quickly, replies to emails quickly, and really cares about his students. The discussions and zoom sessions were great and helped a lot. Take this class!
He truly loves his field of study and tries to get you to love it too. Expect a ton of reading if you want to get a good grade. He loves to assign papers, but is very clear on what he expects and how he wants them structured. One final that included two essay questions which took almost the entire three hours to finish. Awesome professor!
One of the best professors at MJC. He's passionate about teaching. Papers are the most of the grade, but he always gives at least 3 different topics to choose from. He quizzes after readings as well. He lectures on the material but also opens up a class discussion. His classes are very engaging. Be prepared to read but the material is great overall
There is a lot of reading in this class but the material is interesting to read. There a quite a few papers that he wants written. He knows how to explain the material well.
Professor Miller is the reason I chose UC Berkeley's Political Science department. He is a great professor, and the readings he assigned helped prepare me for the readings my Cal political science professors assign in my upper division classes. Amazing professor!!!
While Mr. Miller is a clear grader and very straight forward in his expectations, his organization in class is lacking. I learned a lot however, about modern issues and the way the supreme court goes about ruling. Be prepared to read in between the lines though in order to pass because he doesn't give study guides that help with the test.
I hated politics and anything that had to do with them until I took this class with Professor Miller and he completely changed my views. Great, knowledgeable instructor who always gives good helpful feedback to help you constantly improve your work. As long as you read the assigned readings and study, you should pass. Would definitely recommend him
He is really such a humanitarian and overall simple homework, simple lessons, simple class flow. I would say take him!
He is really such a humanitarian and overall simple homework, simple lessons, simple class flow. I would say take him! The in class patticipation is key although he does not call on people EVER. And I think it's cool that we, as students, get his opinion, and to learn and, apply what we learn, to curreny situations in America every day. Loved it!
Professor Miller is fair, but expects you to put in work. You will definitely spend the exact amount of hours as described in the syllabus on homework and classwork. There is no getting out 5 minutes early. Don't even think about cutting corners. Put in your required time and you will get the grade you deserve. A lot of reading and writing.
Professor Miller seemed really cool at first, and a great teacher who cares. But after I shared my far left political views I noticed my work was being graded more harshly and I felt as if I was forced out of an A in the class because of my far left political stance.
I took Dr. Miller for Polsc 120. His class challenged me academically and took me out of my comfort zone as a student. He is clear, informative, and approachable. This is not a class you get an easy A in. However, if you do the work and participate in class you will take a lot from the course and having him as an instructor.
Miller was very involved in the online class, his work was thorough and gives great feedback. The material was always interesting and he obviously has a passion for his work. Put in the work, you'll get a good grade and learn something, and come out more compassionate for the world around you. I think everyone should have to take human rights.
Miller is an awesome professor ( online), but there is so much hmk! interesting topics, but very time-consuming. You have 4 essays, and then an essay for the final. It's not a tough class though, do the work and you'll get a good grade. You'll come out feeling confident about the subject, also.
I do not recommend him at all. Professor Miller loves his class to teach but he does not think out of the box. His three-unit class is equalling to over six-unit class.
I cannot praise Professor Miller enough. His online presence was huge, he participated in all the discussions, responding to the students, he had conference calls which were great, and he dedicated himself to the class. When grading he often included comments on what he enjoyed reading and improvements which could be made. Cannot recommend enough.
It's evident that Mr. Miller puts effort in his curriculum. The books and topics he selects are not only educational but interesting and inspiring. Be prepared to read, write and participate in discussions. He gives great feedback. He has genuine interest to help students succeed.
Prof. Miller is amazing! He gives great feedback, responds to email quickly, and is very clear on assignment criteria. He makes an open environment that makes you comfortable sharing your opinions, while also being open minded to other's opinions.
Professor Millers classes were my favorite from all of my time at MJC. Hes an amazing teacher and gives great feedback when it comes to your papers. I would recommend him to anyone who was interested in political science.
I really enjoyed professor Millers class. I took this class over the summer and it was very eye opening. He gives us about three cases to read each week, but trust me.. everything you learn in this class will be very useful. This is a class I would recommend everyone to take. There are a few papers that need to be written but nothing too difficult.
I took Mr. Miller's MPOLSC-101 online class and enjoyed it very much! He is very responsive and grades right away. He provided various ways to learn the material (i.e., recorded lectures, web conferences, reading material) and it was very interesting. There is reading assignments and work assignments due every week; text book required.
Professor Miller is the best professor Ive had out of my 4 semesters in college. The class was very engaging, the work load was reasonable, and tests were fair. Prof M seems to be left leaning politically, but as a conservative/libertarian I can say my insight was never dismissed and I never felt uncomfortable in his classroom. 1000000% recommend.
The lectures were very entertaining and I looked forward to every class with him. Make sure to take good notes and study them because that will make the tests a cakewalk. There are 3 essays which are challenging but manageable. I can't recommend him enough; he knows how to teach and he knows how to make things interesting.
If you ever have the ability to take a political science course anywhere, take it at Modesto Junior College with Dr. Miller. It is not just because he challenges you to think, he guides you to think. This is what teachers should do, but it seems that many teachers have failed in this regard. Dr. Miller is training the future through pedagogy.
Dr. Miller is amazing. I have taken a couple of classes with him and he always provides plenty of feedback on assignments. His assignments really help with understanding the material, making big assignments like essays and essay exams manageable. He is a caring professor and is very accessible outside of class. He inspired me to switch to Poli Sci.
ATTENTION PROFESSORS OF MJC: please have Prof. Miller show you how to organize your online classes. He makes it straight forward so we can focus on the material not the BS of navigating your dysfunctional canvas page. It is truly pathetic how bad some of you are at setting this up. This guy gets it. He is a good professors in other regards too.
Human Rights was such an interesting class to take. I liked the assignments well enough, and Prof. Miller was nice. Id be willing to take another class with this Professor.
This class wasn't easy, but I feel like I learned a lot. He's very kind and willing to help anyone. There are three essays, a few debates in the form of discussion posts, and a video presentation (which may also be a discussion post). A 250-page book is assigned as reading over 3 weeks, but it's not dry and supplants the textbook. Would recommend.
He's a nice guy. Far too much work for this class. As an athlete, I can hardly make time to focus on other classes due to the stress and workload from this one. never taking him again.
I took both POLSC 102 and POLSC 130 for my major and Professor Miller has to be one of the most attentive and easiest professors to take at MJC. The reason why he stood out is that he provides feedback on EVERYTHING and even gives you video feedback on your two essays. He really does want you to succeed and it is very hard to fail in this class.
Professor Miller is a great professor. I wouldn't call him a tough grader, but he is thorough. Most assignments in his class are written, there are very few quizzes. He is really nice, and his class was super interesting. Highly recommend taking him for political science!
There is a lot of reading, I would say a total of 3 books and short chapters from others that he provides. Other that that I think that after reading all the books, they were very informative. I have taking him for 2 different classes and will be taking him for a third one this summer. He assigns homework based on the corse.
Great professor, assignments are very clear and always made me excited to start them. He has debates which was my favorite part of this class, if you get the opportunity you should run to be his student.
I was scared to take a politics class but Professor Miller made me feel comfortable. His class was easy as long as you do your work. The workload wasn't bad at all and I never had to do any super long writing assignments. There were also opportunities for extra credit which was great.
I took his summer online course and it was a pretty easy class. We would have about three to four assignments a week and one discussion. The assignments were not difficult. We had to read a book for the class. We did one essay for the class and the midterm and final were both essays. You to go to two zoom meetings to get credit.
Professor Miller was an amazing Political Science teacher. I learned more than I thought I ever could have. I took this class as a junior in high school and found that all of the exams and assignments were not too difficult and very informational, which I liked. The experience I had in this class was phenomenal!
Professor Miller is a fair grader and will work with you to improve your grade.
He is compassionate for people if they have to miss class. However, sometimes assignments will come up in class for points, so it's important not to miss too many or you risk your grade dropping. He is kind and encourages discussion. He gave us a lot of time to complete homework, just remember because they're usually due the morning before class.
As long as you show up and study the cases he provides you with it is not a difficult class, he is very easy going doesn't give you loads of homework.
I honestly really enjoyed the content in this class. I found that the first half of the semester was tougher but the second half was better. Most of the work in the class is written and there are a few essays. If you are ever confused, email/talk to the professor; he is really nice. Don't procrastinate on the homework. Good luck!
Polsc101 was very straightforward and Prof Miller kept the class engaging. You can tell he really cares about his students. There was a mix of reading a few books and watching lectures. Books cost me $20 to rent and I found them interesting. Zoom meetings were optional. Only 3 essays. I would take Prof Miller again!
I've been meaning to leave a review for a while- as I've been a student of his since early '24 and will continue to be in several more of his courses until the end of this year. He's awesome, very supportive and definitely knows his stuff. He's very active on campus and makes great efforts to be there for his students. Best Prof ever :)
I really enjoyed this class! It was very interesting to learn and you can tell the professor enjoyed what he was talking about. He encouraged really great civil talks, did class room activities, and gave feedback on our assignments. An amazing class overall but try not to miss any assignments because each one REALLY counts.
I got a 92% on my second midterm, and an 85% on my final exam. My final grade came out to a C despite turning in assignments on time. Hard to get full points on discussion assignments. He's a nice guy, but a bit of a tough grader.
He is so kind, but he is very soft-spoken. Let me miss class when I had to without any judgement. He wanted me to talk about what I really believe in instead of his opinion. The class itself got a bit heated during debates and some people were kinda nasty, but I did make a friend! And you learn about the judicial system, so it's not just debating.
Professor Miller's POLSC101 class was really engaging. The workload was manageable, and the material was interesting. Using unstuckstudy and the free textbook helped me stay on top of the assignments. Definitely recommend this class!
One of professor's best attributes is his ability to maintain neutrality. In the realm of politics things are hard to discuss. He avoids dominating conversations with his own perspective focusing on a academic analysis of politics and helps students who struggle to explain things by expanding on their thoughts so that their points are heard W teach
Professor Miller really is a top teacher in Political Science! Working with him directly, he is super nice, willing to elaborate on more information, and provides engaging activities; forcing you to consider all points of views on a topic! 10/10!
This professor is very well organized, professional, and understanding.
