Professor Mitton has been the best professor I've had in my time at college. Brilliant man who seems to know everything there is to know about American history, and especially about slaveries role in it. He will stretch your mind and help you see things from a broader perspective, his class is the epitome of what education should be.
He makes you work hard for your grade, but he also teaches you on how to think for yourself. He is very intelligent and knows a lot about the subject and it shows in his lectures. The readings are a necessity to follow along in the lectures and going to class helps with the tests. You learn a lot with this professor. Would definitely take again!
Dr. Mitton has by far been one of my favorite professors. He knows his stuff and makes it really interesting to learn about. The course requires a lot of reading and writing, but he is more than willing to work with you and help you in any way you can. If you put in the effort, your grade will reflect it. Great teacher!
Dr. Mitton is the best professor I've ever had. He's one of the genuinely great teachers that are often hard to come by. I've learned so much from him from class and his advice as well. There's lot of work involved but it's not busy work, it's all supplementary to lecture and makes writing papers much easier. If you ask for help, you'll get it.
Definitely one of the best professors you could have. There is a lot of work in this class, not particularly hard, but you need to keep up with all of the readings to get a good grade. Professor Mitton teaches you to think for yourself and gives you a very clear picture of American History.
Dr. Mitton is the best professor I have had. He lets you form your own opinion and provides the evidence needed to defend it. There is a lot of reading but it is all relevant to the course. You are not punished for missing class but it would be wise to be there, considering he covers a lot in each lecture.
First off I will say that I was generously given a C in the class and and beyond ecstatic to receive this. Professor is a great guy who really just wants his students to care about the readings and lectures just as much as he does. If you are looking at putting in minimal effort, this class will be a living hell for you.
Dr. Mitton was honestly the best professor i've had so far and it would take quite a lot to surpass his helpfulness, lectures, and passion for history. The class is no walk in the park, you need to put in work to get the grade you want. He acknowledges hard work and you will see your hard work pay off.
Take his class. 'Nuff said.
Dr. Mitton really knows his stuff. Every minute of his lectures are critically captivating. He should be teaching at Harvard or any other Ivy League institution.
Amazing professor and an extremely interesting class that all college students should take. It's a lot of work but as long as you do the assignments, it's very possible to get an A.
Dr. Mitton exposes the truth about our society which makes him so admirable, but he lets his students decide their choice; he doesn't choose for them. The most interesting class I've taken by far, I can't stress enough the importance of keeping up with your notebook or you will fall extremely behind. He's also low key cute for an older guy.
The course work is very challenging, as intended. Dr. Mitton truly cares about his students and the education they are receiving. With that being said, you will not make it by without genuine effort and dedication. If you are interested in history and want to truly get something out of a history/writing course, then his class is your cup-of-tea.
Dr. Mitton is an incredible teacher and easily one of the best at FAU. Very lucky to have been challenged by him. Be prepared to read and watch lots of films and to write, but it's all worth it. This is college and he treats it as such. Teaches you how to think, not what to think. Do yourself a favor and take his class. Amazing paper feedback also.
Dr. Mitton is one of the best, if not the best Professor at FAU. He enables his students to conclude their own stances on the essay prompts, as long as they back up their claims with factual information. His lectures were some of the best I've heard, along with his unbiased approach to cover almost all political views. Highly Recommend!
As if another review on this guy is even necessary....... he is the BEST. if you're lazy or uninterested in being challenged you won't do well. Dr. Mitton is very straight forward from the first day with what he expects so be real with yourself. This class is worth it though. Best I've taken at FAU.
Dr. Mitton is one of the few professors I've had so far that actually seems like he cares for what he's doing. The course is very demanding and at times the topics can be quite challenging, but all of these things are worth it for what you will learn by the end of the course. Be prepared to read a lot and watch many movies and documentaries.
Dr. Mitton is a very good professor that teaches u a whole different perspective on history, which makes the class more interesting. If u want an A u have to work for it. This class really changed my perspective on history and I feel like I have a better grasp on what truly happened in America up to 1877.
He is a great prof, goes out of his way to give you interesting lectures that cover a range of topics that may not seem to relevant, but are later connected to the class. It gives you a new perspective of American History, different from the regular high school material. His essays are graded very easily, and his tests are not too bad if you study.
Dr. Mitton is a fantastic professor. He knows, like, everything and isn't afraid to tell you that, (a little egocentric, but for good reason). He's a bit tough on grading papers, but it's super helpful in the end. The class is tough if you have a job; lots of reading assignments and notes required for the class. Pace yourself or you'll drown.
Lots of required materials articles videos movies books etc. He is a fair grader and just wants the best from you as a student. He is the best professor I've ever had. It takes a lot of work but can get a good grade if the time is put in
By far the best teacher I have ever had. The course was extremely eye-opening and changed my entire college and my plans for the future. Dr. Mitton is an excellent professor that any well-meaning and hard-working student will learn a lot from.
He's one of the best professor's I've had. He knows what he's talking about, and shows a passion for it. The topics were fascinating and papers were complex. He assigns quite a bit of readings, which you have to take notes on. Be prepared to be writing a lot.
Dr. Mitton is the best professor I've ever had. His class is very intimidating and you have to work for it, but he changed my entire mindset on school because of how inspiring he is. I would recommend him to anyway even somewhat interested in history, it's worth it. There is lots of writing and work, but its well worth it and you'll learn a ton.
OK. This is the deal with Professor Mitton. He is not what you would call an easy A, show-up-and-pass type thing. He is an amazing professor, and he truly knows what he is talking about. He shows you a broader perspective on things. If you truly love History you are in for a treat. Even if you don't like History you will end up loving it.
Take him. Hes intensely passionate about history, and it clearly translates over to his teaching; in fact, I never want to miss a lecture. Im truly considering majoring in history now. Theres lot of readings and films, but by the end of the class, I promise you, youll know so much, not from a conventional perspective either.
This is the second time I take a class with Dr. Mitton, and as before, he is a fantastic professor. He cares a lot about what he teaches and about the fact that we understand what he teaches. He loves questions, so don't be afraid to ask. Even in WOH2012, he assigns a massive amount of work, so be careful with that if you decide to take his class.
Great speeches in class. He really knows what hes talking about and makes for really good topics during class.
He is a great professor and speaks his heart in class. Therefore, he expects the students to have good arguments in class. The class is a constant debate, there is not the time to be shy.
Clear and well organized information. As long as you are there to learn you will do well. No slackers. Good choice of reading material. Honest and sincere answers all questions completely.
Very organized and gives good feedback on exams and papers. Papers are tough but at least there are only 2 during the semester. 2 papers & 2 exams where notes are optional. He expects participation in debates and discussions but overall I learned a lot!
Good professor to take if you enjoy being challenged to think. His lectures are intriguing and hes very pristine in his speaking. Makes sure everything is explained to the class. Get ready to read more than one book though.
I love him, he definitely challenges you to think. However, what I really enjoyed about this class is that he gave students 3 different options on grading in the class depending on what kind of student you are. Definitely a lot of material but overall he makes the class very enjoyable and entertaining!
This class was great. Got to learn a lot. Do expect to put work into it by reading. Overall you can do well.
Great instructor. Challenges you to think for yourself. The papers at first seem unreasonable but trust me they are manageable. You wont regret taking him.
Dr. Mitton is an outstanding professor. There is a strong emphasis on thinking on oneself and seeing things in different ways. There were great film studies. You get to choose your grading track out of 3 options. If you want to get closer to knowing how the world works, take this professor. If you do the work, the exams and papers are not too hard.
Mitton is one of the best professors at FAU. He challenges his students to think and truly cares about them. Lots of reading and note taking if you choose his Track 3 for grading, but it's all very worth it. I learned so much in this class. He is very knowledgable and his lectures are very interesting. He is also very funny. Love him!
Professor Mitton is truly amazing. There is nothing negative to say about him: he is passionate about teaching and history. As a biology major, I never found history interesting until now! He makes you think in ways you would never have considered. He is open-minded and wants his students to succeed. This class is a lot of work but its manageable
Dr. Mitton is a really good professor, he challenges you to think for yourself. The first few weeks of class can be overwhelming because he throws a lot of information at you, but he clarifies everything in lecture and is easy to contact if needed. Only 2 papers, the prompts are both very interesting , and 2 exams which you must study for to pass!
Dr. Mitton is a real intellectual. One of the best professors I've ever had 15/10. Take him if you like asking questions about everything. Though, I would recommend treating the course like a four credit class if you really want an A
Dr. Mitton is my favorite professor i've had thus far at FAU. While the work is hard, his intriguing lectures help. You have to really put in the work for a good grade, but it's worth it. After this course, writing other papers will feel like nothing. Mitton is a great teacher, just be prepared for heavy reading and writing.
He makes you work for your grade, but you learn so much history in this class. He gives very good feedback.
A higher caliber professor than most at FAU. Deserves students who make an effort. Doesn't think for you; makes you connect the dots to think for yourself. Challenges student beliefs without bias. Definitely makes it worth the money, time, and effort. Take him if you're in it for more than just a piece of paper.
Dr. Mitton is the best professor Ive had in my undergraduate career. FAU is actually my fourth university (but it is the one Im graduating from) and not one other professor enlightened my love of learning and made me want to work so much harder to be successful in the class. If youre committed and do the work, youll pass. If not, youll fail.
This class will look overwhelming at first, and honestly at times it feels like it too but I would definitely suggest you take it, that is if you are willing to put in effort. He is definitely teaching this course at a higher level than it is intended but if you show genuine effort in your papers and cite the sources he has provided you, simple A.
He definitely makes you work and I don't recommend missing his class ever. Each class is deeply interesting, and you'll want to be prepared by doing the readings and the movies because it makes the class more interesting. I'd take any class he teaches, you'll get your money's worth.
During this semester we experienced Covid so it was a little different. Grade came from 1 of 3 different tracks you chose at the start of the semester. While attendance is not mandatory if you do not watch the lectures it shows in your paper. Follow the rubric and keep you paper persuasive without falling into informative. do that and your golden.
Dr. Mitton was so great. The class looked so intimidating at first, but he is so passionate and he gives great feedback on your papers and makes history so fun. I never liked history but I really enjoyed this class. Make sure to read everything he assigns and pay attention to his lectures! Office hours are great with him too.
Professor Mitton is awesome. The class have few assignments, he gives options on how you get graded to accommodate with your schedule. You will NEED to dedicate time to this class as there is a lot of reading and movie watching. The lectures are amazing and the Dr. Mitton really makes you think. Definitely would take it again.
Steven Mitton really cares about his students. There are 6 papers in total and a lot of reading. If you have the time to take this class I would recommend it. I feel as though my writing and critical thinking skills have improved after this course.
He's a good teacher and will make you think. he is very heavy with his own opinions though and will relay exactly what it is and can be a little annoying on saying how he thinks his opinion is the only correct one. besides this, he is a good teacher but be careful because he does not have a lot of assignments. I would not take him again though.
He is one of the cooler professors who makes history interesting. He is very passionate about his area of study which makes class engaging. The essays for his class are a bit difficult if you dont watch the movies, attend lectures and read the books. You will have to dedicate time for this class but it pays off.
Great Professor! I took this course for a WAC credit. Assignments are time consuming, so always make time for the readings and videos. Only 4 papers. Take notes for a grade so you know you're on track with the material. He gives feedback on each paper so you can improve. Participate in canvas discussions.
Dr. Mitton is by far one of my favorite professors. His class can be difficult if you don't work for it (lots of videos to watch and books), but trust me it is worth it. You can learn a lot from him. Meet during office hours and you're certain of a great talk and help with anything. Best history professor!
A great professor and very understanding. Dr. Mitton communicates well with his students and aids in making sure students understand the lectures to the fullest extent. The class itself is not hard but be prepared to work! Get ready for 7-10 pg papers but, the credit is worth it; you knock two birds out with one stone. NOTES ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS if you want to hear someone ramble about one sided extreme liberal political views for an hour and 20 minutes. Very rude and unprofessional when responding to my emails. As a business major he would single me out, asking questions and bully the answers I gave. Heard he was good prior to taking his class, not the case anymore.
The content of this class was very interesting, but the professor himself was rude and snobby. He gave a prompt for a paper and then proceeded to send personal emails to students stating that if they argue for the prompt, their paper wouldn't be good. Personally, I felt like he would try to use his status to power over and intimidate students.
No exams but prepare to write essays and use MANY sources. I HIGHLY recommend taking notes on each documentary and chapters of the book you will need to include for your papers as sources. They make writing the papers so much easier. Participation and attendance is important too. He is blunt but also passionate and cares for his students' success.
I loved Professor Mitton. I feel like I learned so much during his class. I wish I could pick his brain. He is very knowledgeable and a great teacher. He does assign papers instead of tests and the papers are long but I found it really helpful to expand my knowledge. He also gives good feedback and wants everyone to improve.
he would give hours of documentaries and reading every class and proceed to barely talk about what our essay would be on in class. i felt like i was listening to this man's opinions for an hour and 20 minutes, he reassured us he had no opinion on religion but proceeded to bash religion and opposing views to his own very liberal views
He is one-sided and gives conflicted information. He gives different track records for his class and one of them doesnt require attendance, but it does and then states that you have to go and if not then FAILS you. He has 3 essays that consist of 25 to 30 sources. If your looking for a professor from hell, this is the one. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
I loved this professor his lectures were always so interesting. However, there are a lot of films to take notes on and trust me you want to take notes because they really help with the essays. There are 3 essays and lots of discussion posts. Overall, he was a great professor.
The best professor I've had at FAU so far. If you are majoring in History, his class is a MUST. The class is so thought provoking and the content that you engage is amazing. Be prepared to read and watch a lot of films. The textbook you read from is available online and all of the extra reading content & films will be available from him.
Dr. Mitton was clear about grading structure. Lots to read, lots of notes, and 6 page long paper instructions. Challenging but would recommend
Mitton is one of my favorite Professors at FAU. To do well in his class you have to read and watch the videos he assigns. However, If you take notes on these you basically have your essays done already. Take this course If you actually care to be educated on this countries history and care about your civic literacy, he will make it interesting.
Honestly one of the best professors I have ever had. He really goes in-depth on many topics and I really did learn a lot by the end of the course.the class does require a lot of critical thinking. It gets tricky when it is time for essays because he requires SOOOO MUCHHH but will give you feedback.Participate in class because HE WILL call you out.
Dr. Mitton inspired me to switch my major to history because he made learning about history interesting and relevant. His lectures are intense and he has high expectations for the papers he assigns but if you put in the work, he will help you. Just stay on top of the films and readings and you will do fine.
This is a course for history majors. If you are not a history major, you should take English 2. There is a lot of homework, so get ready to read, watch, and take many notes. However, taking Dr.Mitton's class was very informative and helped me learn more about American history. He brings up concepts and perspectives that I found very interesting.
He is so inspirational.Choose TRACK 3- while lots of work, its worth it and you are anyway taking LOTS of notes from videos/txtbook/lectures + u can do participation as ONLY discussions if you are shy.Essays=very straightforward/ easy as long as you TAKE NOTES + follow guidelines. Not harsh grader but one of those teachers who give max grade as 96.
I had the honor of having Dr. Mitton as my professor for HIS2050, undoubtedly one of the best at FAU! His class is very easy, you have 3 tracks and each one is a different way of grading work. During the course you read 4 books, watch several films, documentaries, etc. based on the era then do discussions in class and on canvas + midterm and final.
He has really good lectures but will constantly push his ideas on you and it got to the point that it was annoying and would bash students just because they had different opinions and is rude towards these students. I would not recommend this class to anyone unless you are ready to sit through the 3-hour class of him rambling on about his views.
Do not take this class unless you are a history major because he teaches like everyone is super into history and he's a hardass. There is an ungodly amount of homework and he forces his views onto his students a lot. The lectures can be interesting, but not worth it.
Dr. Mitton is a great professor! If you put in the hard work he recognizes it.His papers were 6-8 pages but you end up feeling so accomplished after writing them. There's a good amount of homework but you learn so much about American history! I 10/10 recommend taking this class and I look forward to taking more classes with Dr. Mitton!
Wonderful teacher. Choose track 3. Lectures were very in-depth
Hands down best professor at FAU! Dr. Mitton has a special way of teaching with discussion based lectures and incorporating videos for students to take notes leading up to an essay. I have truly learned so much this semester and left lectures energized with different perspectives on history I have never heard before. I never wanted to miss!
Professor has no empathy for students personal situations. He is very rude and blunt through email as well. I did not feel supported throughout this course at all.
I absolutely love his lectures and his use of video for expanding our understanding of the topic. I do want to warn that picking track 3 (notes are mandatory) does give a lot of work, however my essays were so much better because I understood the videos. The essays require specific number of notes from videos so make sure to get notes.
I transferred into his class and he's definetly a nice guy but he assigns a lot of homework. He has a notes guide for the whole semester but as long as you follow it you'll be fine. He has 3 major papers that you have to cite 25 for for the whole semester but gives you multiple prompts that you can choose from.
This professor is great but assigns too much work. He assigns "notebooks" that require you to read a book or watch a documentary and write a page of notes on it. The first part of the tests is big essays using sources that are usually irrelevant. The second part is an easier essay. Way too much work for the credit. Take an easier professor online.
Dr. Mitton was an amazing professor. His lectures are very in-depth, and you will learn a lot just by attending these lectures. He gives several tracks for grading. This class consists of 3 exams, both with 2 essays, and notes (dependent on which track you chose). Notes can be quite a lot, but they are extremely helpful for essays. Amazing class!!
I don't know how he has such good reviews he made my life terrible. His essays were impossible to write about 6 pages with 25 sources on top of 6 notebooks with about 5-8 pages each and if you dont participate in class he will fail you. Avoid this professor!!!!!
My favorite professor I've ever had. I've taken three of Dr. Mitton's classes and I hope I can take another before I graduate. He may seem a little grumpy or intimidating, but he's very kind and wants you to succeed.
Mitton is a passionate professor and a fantastic lecturer. He allows you to choose several grading paths, yet it is clear that route 3 is optimal for success (submitting lots of notes). Be ready to write long papers + do film and book studies. His class is geared toward history majors. Don't take his class if you dislike history or want an easy A.
HES EVIL AVOID!!!!!!!!
I'm going to be real. If you hate/aren't good with writing, don't take this class. He's not joking when he says his class will take the most time. If you fail one of his papers, you're cooked, period. He's a nice dude, a bit pretentious but means well. Beware at your own risk.
Mitton is a real interesting prof. He changed my perspective on history and his lectures are mad interesting. He has a unique track-based grading structure; I recommend track 3. Lot of work but the notes were pretty interesting imo and were important for the essays. Essays/Exams were considerably challenging and long. He isn't a tough grader imo.
I had a very bad experience with this professor. He grades very difficulty and will degrade you for your writing ability. Avoid this professor if you can. Also, you only had like four grades two including papers so if you're not good at writing papers RUN.
Some of the most interesting history lectures at FAU, with some of the best paper topics I've ever done.
Extremely biased politically. On the cusp of communist. Unbearably anti Republican/Conservative and tells history entirely through that scope. Claims not to be political but is incredibly so to the point of liberal indoctrination.
Dr. Mitton was the best first professor to have. I am a history major and am focusing on legal/american history, and I would come early to class just to talk to him in the mornings and ask him questions. He is strict, and to a non history major (which made up most of his class) it is tough, but if I could, I would take his class all over again.
i actually love him. i took his class over the summer, and we had 2 LONG papers, but the topics were interesting. take lots of notes in his class. choose track 3 cause then you have graded notes which makes it easier to get a good grade, and papers arent worth as much. attendance isnt necessary, but you need the info from class for the papers.
class participation is a good chunk of your grade. have to write a lot of papers that include so many sources. tries to get people to drop his class first week and then half way through semester. very very lecture heavy and lots of homework/watching videos and taking notes outside of class time. not afraid to call you out in class either
LOVED this class. Truly the hardest thing were the papers you had to write. But after the 1st paper you really get the hang of his class. Lectures are supplemental to the essays so go to them!! BUT participation is almost MANDATORY depending of your "grading track." He really gets you to see the world different and think critical
