avoid at all costs. very smart guy just not such a great instructor. the quizzes were over 20-30 page articles and the tests come straight from the lectures, which are often hard to follow. Is helpful by email though, but a slight history snob. I loved history before this class but now im not such a fan. like i said nice guy but not a great teacher
Horrible teacher. He is a very smart man and knows his History, but a horrible instructor. Weekly reading were do and you were quizzed over them, they were 20+ pages. 3 exams with a horrible study guide, one essay question were 50 points. He is very proud of the fact that he does not give A's or B's. very dissapointed.
Horrible teacher. I would rather watch the test pattern then to watch this guy teach. he is new and doesnt know what he is doing in the slightest bit. His study guides consist of about half of what is on the tests. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
He is a great teacher. His lectures are very organized and interesting. He really knows his stuff. He allows you to learn an entire new concept of history. He is kinda tough, but worth it!
Very good teacher. Intimidating in the beginning, but loosened up near the end. You have to read 20+ page articles, but it's college so what can you expect? He gives study guides that are EXACTLY like the exams. He is super helpful if you need extra help. Knows his stuff, and is interesting to listen to.
He is very interesting to listen to. You do not need a book for this class but it is very important that you take good notes for your exams. The study guides he gives you are right on for his exams. It would be nice to have these study guides early on so that we knew what was most important to take notes on; however, they are very helpfull.
After people didn't do so well after the first exam he started recording his lectures and put them on D2L. He also lets you use your notes for the quizzes. This is a hard class but this guy will bend over backwards to help his students out.
Ultra strict attendance policy, won't even allow excused absences for sickness. Lectures are hard to follow, and tests are purely from lectures, no book involved.
Test were essay format, study guide was helpful. Nash is always helpful and always replies to emails.Interesting lectures, he repeats the important stuff. Not an easy class but it is possible to make an A, I did. I would definetly take him again as I learned a lot and after all, that's what college is all about.
Nash was probably one of my more enjoyable teachers. He is extremely helpful and will be happy to meet with you to go over the study guide. His tests aren't just memorization you have to know the significance of events which i found refreshing. Book is not needed but make sure to pay attention to his lectures!
I am taking his class during the summer and it's very easy to pass if you show up for class and take good notes. He tries his best to make history not as boring. He welcomes question and offers helpful text for help if you are interested.
Dr Nash seems to be a very good historian. He is also a very good lecturer. He captures your attention in class and does a good job of keeping class interesting. His tests are another story. I do believe that the tests reflect your knowledge of the material, but the List two identities on the test are difficult to study for. Not an easy A.
I found that Mr Nash tends to be "picky" concerning how you words your short answers.
said you will need a book for the class yet never tought from the book so it was not used the whole time i was in his class. nothing he taught was in the book so you had to strictly rely on his opinions and take notes on what he said in class or you will fail. Hard 5 answer quizzes required 25-30 pages of reading (come on its just a core class).
This guy is a superb orator. At times he can be absolutely enthralling. He is the sole reason I actually enjoy history now. His quizzes are difficult, but the exams are reasonable if you have a good grasp of the material. Great professor.
Great teacher and he is hilarious! Loved his class. quizes can be tough, but the exams aren't to bad. Come to class and you will make a decent grade. I would recomend him
He an awesome teacher though his quizzes come straight from lectures so go to class or listen to them on D2L whatever works 4 u he tells u. His tests are fairly easy and he provides study guides overall very recommendable
Amazing professor! He is a great lecturer and keeps things interesting. His quizzes and exams aren't too hard if you come to class and take good notes. I Would HIGHLY recommend taking his class.
This man has to be the most brilliant orator I have ever listened to. He keeps class interesting, and will help you in any way he can. I highly recommend taking him if you get the chance. You will not be disappointed with his teaching style or his lectures.
Dr. Nash is briliant! He turned a boring history class into my now favorite class to take!!
Nash is great teacher. his quizzes arent to bad and exams are ok. He gives you a study guide and if you come to class and take notes then you will do fine in this class.
He's a good teacher unless you get on his bad side. I never used the book except for when I was making out the study guides, but really you could get by without it at all. Tests are okay, but you definately have to study and know the dates of everything. Bonus points for memorizing the presidents in order.
He is a horrible teacher. His tests are nothing like what he talks about in class. You really need to study in order to get an A in his class. You can pass by just going but the tests are really hard if you don't read in your textbook.
By far the best teacher i have ever had.He holds my attention like no other teacher has ever been able to do.cool cool cool class not easy but nothing good ever is
Dr. Nash is very brilliant! He actually knows what he is lecturing about and doesn't even have to use notes to do so. He keeps your attention very easily and I thought his tests were very easy if you took good notes. As long as you study for the tests and show up to class, then an A is not hard to get. Great professor!
I loved this class! I love that he teaches in story-like form so that he keeps the class' attention. We had no tests, but the book reviews were graded fairly and he always offered to pre-read and return with comments, which was very helpful. He is really intelligent and passionate about what he teaches, so this class is definitely worth taking!
Nicest most helpful professor. Tests and quizzes come straight from his lectures. He is extremely willing to help anyone. He has a great sense of humor.
He is hilarious. Just take notes, you will never open a book and still make an A! His tests are directly from the lecture. He makes sure you will know what to expect on a test. No surprises. If you will show up and take good notes, you will love this class.
Great professor who enjoys history & makes it where you will too. You learn while enjoying the class. Test are clear cut if you study. I would highly recommend.
you never use your book and as long as you go to class and don't fall behind you'll be fine. His tests aren't easy but as long as you take notes and pay attention they won't be too bad. he randomly gives out quizzes throughout the semester without warning but you can use your notes.
I was very satisfied overall with Prof Nash's class. His lectures are interesting, organized, and are clear as far as to what's important. This man is extremely knowledgable of the subjecct he teaches and will go into great detail if you ask a question. Exams are not difficult, but taking good notes is a must; he aslo gives a terms list beforehand.
DO NOT buy the textbook. Just take good notes. Easy exams if you take notes and study. Great guy to have.
His lectures kept my attention. His study guides are right on target to pass the test. He records his lectures so if you miss you can easily go back. He teaches out of his lectures not the book.
really great professor! makes everything really understandable and is easy to follow. take good notes and you don't need the book. His tests are easy as long as you study your notes. lectures almost like he is telling a story, so it isn't really boring.
funny and great teacher
He's a really great professor. The lectures are very clear. If you attend class and take notes, you will do fine.
He is a really great teacher and historian. His lectures are very clear and easy to understand. He records all the lectures so you can listen to them online, so attendance isn't mandatory, but I never miss class because I find it interesting. He uses an online program called top hat for quizzes and in-class questions, which I really like.
Literally the best history teacher in the world! I hate history but he made me love it!
Dr.Nash is awesome! He has a good sense of humor to keep you interested. He records his lectures to help you study, and gives you a study guide a week before each test. The study guides are AMAZINGLY helpful... if you do them, so do them!! You have random quizzes, so come to class and take good notes. You'll be golden! Highly recommend!
Horrible online educator. He did not recommend a book for the course only uses pre recorded lectures. Provides little to no feedback and grades each assignment differently even though they are the same format.
Best professor! I wish all professors could be like this. All you have to do is show up to class and take good notes. Tests are straight forward and easy. Be prepared to write an essay on the test, study guide prepares you for that. Great sense of humor!
Nash is a great teacher! Be prepared to take good notes. There is nothing for you to copy down, you listen to his lecture and write down what you think will be important for the test. He posts his lectures online so if you miss something it's not a big deal. Easy enough A if you put the effort and time in. Great class!
His lectures are unorganized and very hard to take notes for because he talks about a lot of unnecessary details that aren't on the exam. Unless you are a very good note taker and know a lot about history, I wouldn't recommend his class.
He is easy to listen to in lectures, it's not hard to stay awake. I thought the class was both easy and interesting. If you miss class he records all lectures, but the incentive to listen if absent is 0 for me, so go to class. If you take good notes then you'll pass for sure. open notes for quizzes. exams can be hard but he gives a good study guide
Don't buy the book! Awesome teacher, though. Lectures are pretty interesting and if you take good notes and check the lecture recording if you missed something, tests are easy.
Professor Nash is very smart, and really knows his information. His lectures are long, but he tells it like a story so it is interesting. Not the typical history class. Puts all his lectures online for students, but you do have to study and take notes.
Fantastic lectures. Posts them online for review and if you miss. Thorough in study guides and test formatting. Good delivery, storytelling, humor. Would absolutely take him for other history classes. Go to class for quizzes and tests. Book is mandatory!
He is a great history professor. Class is optional and he usually tells you when he has pop quizzes, and they are open note. I went to every class but that's because history is not my strongest. I would definitely recommend him!
He is very informative, and knows a lot. He is very full of himself. His lectures are very extensive. His test are not easy, but it is not the hardest thing I have done in my life. Do not buy the book, you will never open it. You have to buy a subscription to a website to turn your attendance in, and take quizzes, and it does nothing else.
He records all his lectures and posts them on D2L. That saved me this semester. I took him in the Fall 2014. You have to pay attention in order to really understand what he is trying to say but he does repeat the important things a few times. History is not my strong subject at all and i got a B in the course.
His study guides are set up to learn the who, what, when, where, and how of the terms assigned, but if you do not learn exactly what Nash wants you to know he will mark your answer wrong.
Nash is extremely arrogant. He is not afraid to call you out in class if you make any noise at all. He insults your intelligence frequently with a condescending tone. Do not take.
A must take for Hist majors. He is tough, but you will learn. Expert on the Civil War. Do the readings, and discuss. The classes are fun and enjoyable if you engage the material. I was sad to graduate and leave my last Dr Nash class. I made a C+, B+, and A- and had to work for them, but I learned so much. He is the best educator in the HIST dept.
For an honors section of this course, Nash assigns readings after every class which average to be around 40 pages. You also have to write 10 2 page papers about these readings over the course of the semester. Class is discussion based and Nash expects a lot from his students. He is funny and knows what he's talking about, but be ready to work.
Fantastic teacher. Wonderful.. humble, deep, intelligent, extremely inspirational. Very passionate, precise, Great communicator, great sense of humor.. Great history class.
Awesome Teacher. I had him for Historical Methods and he truly has a passion for the Civil War and Reconstruction. One of my favorite teachers in the program.
I loved his class. Only had 3 exams & a final that were our grade so you have to study. His teaching style is lecturing and he makes the topics "story-like" so I found it interesting and I dont even like history. He gives no assignments online - all in class. Out of all of the history professors I feel like he's the best. Just put in effort.
Dr. Nash is a really cool professor! makes lectures interesting and likes to digress and tell jokes in class. He records his lectures through Tegrity so you can always go back and review for exam or get the notes if you missed a class. The only problem is there are 3 essays for the exams, but they're graded leniently and he offers easy extra credit
This class was a lot of him lecturing on & on with few moments for questions. He does post all of his lectures online which is super helpful if you missed something. He gives 7 pop quizzes but he drops your 2 lowest. There are only 3 tests including the final & they are essay style. He will help you develop outlines for the test! he gives bonuses!
This professor is pretty good for a history teacher. All of his lectures are posted online, so you can go back and review what is covered. He covers everything that will be on his tests as well. The tests are not hard, and you are given a chance for extra credit on them as well. The professor is entertaining as he can be for a lecture heavy class.
Dr. Nash has a deep knowledge of the Civil War and Southern Appalachia. He is arguably the hardest grader in the department - something that will come in handy if you pursue a grad degree or are interested in growing as a student. Highly recommend. Not for slackers (as no university class should be).
Can't recommend Dr. Nash enough! He's the professor that has deepened my understanding of their class's subject material the most. He doesn't get caught up in asinine details like other HST profs. Lectures aren't rambling lists of dates and occurrences but focused narratives with substantive points. For papers include dates n descriptions 4 things!
Dr. Nash is a very hard grader. It's funny that I have made all As so far, but Nash gave me a B. None of the other history professors have had a problem with my writing, but apparently Nash does. Do NOT take unless you like Bs. He shouldn't be allowed to get away with shredding student's papers.
Dr. Nash is one of those professors you can't get out of your head long after graduation. His classes are tough, but you get more out of his time than any other professor. You will read-a lot, and his classwork is rigorous, but it's because he operates on a higher level, as he expects of his students. He taught me that history is so much more.
Civil War survey, well worth taking his class. Two very easy exams early in the semester, no more. Three books and papers spread out over the course, provides excellent feedback. Great lectures. Knows his material. You chose not to attend, as per school directive he will fail you. Would gladly take again.
Dr Nash is an amazing history professor. His class is tough and his tests are essay format closed notes. If you want to pass you have to be willing to put fourth a solid effort and meet him half way. Hes a wonderful instructor very knowledgeable and caring but dont expect an easy A. He cares about the subject and wants students to learn.
Nash is lecture heavy, and he doesn' have notes on powerpoints, just pictures so you have to take notes fast as he doesn' pause. He gives 10 pop quizes per semester and thats how he takes attendance. You could listen to his lectures online and skip class. Gives essay tests (closed notes). Must be willing to put in time and effort to pass. Doable.
Dr. Nash is amazing. I cannot speak highly enough about him. He truly cares about his students. He will help you edit your essays for his class before you turn them in, even over break. He will help you decide what career to pursue. He gives great lectures, and is always glad to answer your questions. TAKE HIS CLASS.
If you're having to take his honors hist2010 class DONT! It is a total waste of time and I'm sure you have more important things to do than write a paper each week and a final paper that is 30 pages! Kornweibel will force you to take the class but DONT! ITS NOT REQUIRED
Professor Nash is a really great lecturer. His class isn't hard, but you will definitely have to put forth effort if you want to make an A. Also, the tests are essay format.
the class is hard and not understandable
Has work on a website instead of d2l which is weird and hard to work and use and doesnt even grade your discussions.
Dr. Nash is a phenomenal lecturer. If you attend and listen, you will certainly learn an extensive amount of information. However, Dr. Nash assigns at least 4 books to read on top of doing in class discussions, 4 to 5 papers, and listening to lectures. Dr. Nash is a great history teacher, but tends to think he is an English teacher as well.
Professor Nash is an incredible professor. He is the third teacher from the history department that I have had classes with, and he did not disappoint. His class was harder than that of Rankin or Maxson, but there is no teacher better at feedback and helping you learn than Nash. You will learn lots in his classes. He is very knowledgeable.
Pretty standard history professor. Would recommend taking him in person, though, as his online format was unpleasant and harder to work with. Be prepared to participate in every class. A couple of papers was all we had to do so that was nice. Very accesible outside of class and will provide you with feedback and offers lots of help.
Dr. Nash is an incredible lecturer. I read in here before taking his class that hes almost like a storyteller, and its so true. Ive learned so much more about history than I possible could have in the easy A online courses. He is a tough grader and his class is basically just three essay exams, but he will review any work for you cares.
His class is 95% lecture, and he speaks pretty fast and does not put bullet points or notes on the board while speaking, although he posts a recorded lecture after class. only one assignment per week, not hard at all. 3 exams, graded roughly but all had very clear grading criteria and he offered to help you with outlines beforehand.
Professor Nash is very knowledgeable and good when it comes to lectures and questions! He will work with you and is understanding.
Easy to get into lectures, there is no actual notes on his slides, notes are taken by ear and while he talks fast he does record and post the recording to D2L. Uses Top Hat for presentation and questions which can have some minor issues but other than that great professor!
If you are an auditory learner he is one of the best teachers . He grades fairly and based off of your work instead of if he likes you or not. I would love to take more of his classes in the future
HIST - 3801. Dr. Nash is a great professor and would recommend taking him if you are trying to fill out a history class requirement. Readings for the course include books assigned along with papers at days that are dedicated to discussing the entire book for the class period. Participation matters but it also includes how your writing improves.
He basically wants a short paper for a discussion post, and expects you to reply 2-3 paragraph replies to each response. With there not being a textbook, it is based on his lecture only which is usually 2 videos per week that are roughly an hour long. It is hard to keep up, there is no PowerPoint, just him talking. Do not take unless necessary.
Tough grader, exams are handwritten papers IN CLASS and are graded HARSHLY. Condescending after failed exams. Only 3 grades for the ENTIRE semester (Exams). Do NOT take this survey class unless you intend to major in history.
3 Exams all semester makes up your whole grade. Non personal with students. Lectures like its a ted talk. Very very tough grader. Do not take this class.
if you are not spot on what he wants on the exams "when he doesn't tell you what it is" you will fail the class. The course is graded by 3 exams. After the first exam a lot of students dropped the class due to already knowing they wouldn't pass. Save yourself time and the drop in GPA. If you get Nash on your schedule, drop him before the first day.
Ive never worked harder on an essay, just to make a 60, in my life. Same story for the extra credit.
Dr. Nash is a wonderful professor and if you put in the work, you will do fine. I would recommend him to any audio learners, but he also records his lectures and provides an optional textbook. His class only has three exams (essay and short response questions), but he offered an extra credit assignment.
Dr. Nash is a really great guy who keeps lecture interesting and entertaining. His exams can be difficult to figure out technically, but other than that, the class is a breeze. There are also pop quizzes almost weekly, but those are almost an easy A if you were at the previous lecture.
His courses are often reading heavy, and he is not an easy grader. However, he is always eager to help when asked and cares about the success of his students. He usually wants for you to give a lot of detail in your essays. Discussion days are also usually not easy and require a lot of planning. That being said, he is a really caring professor.
Overall the class was fine. No exams throughout the class, but we used an online program to make 3 timelines with a thesis that matched what we had learned previously. He gives several pop quizzes and is lecture-heavy, but he records class and posts it. Type notes don't write and be friendly with the people around you in case you miss anything.
Dr.Nash is a cool guy he doesn't have a lot of assignments and the ones he does have are pretty short book reports. You have to go to class as he only gives 4 unexcused absences. He taught me some pretty interesting stuff and he knows a lot about Appalachia.
