He makes it harder than it should be. The TA's helped out much more.
His classes' test scores regularly stand alone as the lowest of the 3 chem teachers. This is because Neal gets a thrill out of watching students' faces as they open a 50 min test and the problems are 20x harder than the study guide. It's beyond ridiculous. He makes them overly difficult when he doesnt need to. If you hate surprises, avoid this guy
He's awesome. It's O-chem, so of course you'll have to put in time with studying. Go to class, pay attention. Overall, the class isn't that bad!
He's a great teacher. If you pay attention and keep up in the book you'll be fine. He gives a study guide for every test and gives the answers to it. Regardless of what other people say, the test is just like the study guide. The class is tough but he makes it manageable.
Dr. Neal is the best! Hands down. Organic will always be difficult to understand, but Dr. Neal is extremely helpful and makes it easier to grasp the concepts. GO TO CLASS. STUDY. Work the study guides several times. I promise you, it will make a world of difference. You also get to drop 1 test. I highly recommend his class!!!
Dr. Neal is one of the best professors I've had. He explains the material clearly and if you go to class, you will do fine. Orgo is not easy to begin with but I believe it would be 10x harder with another teacher. He is super friendly and helpful and is willing to help you. His study guide is everything you need to know for the exam.
The class is hard (duh) and yes, the test averages were low, but he's a great teacher. He's willing to change his teaching methods to find the way that best suits students. Really cares about the students learning. Very nice and enthusiastic about Chem. One of my favorite teachers. Definitely suggest him!
People need to stop blaming Dr. Neal for their ineptness. Honestly there's so much he can cover in a 50 minute lecture. He actually does do quite a job given the time too. This class will be one of the hardest classes to come. You need to work for it.
Great Teacher. Excellent Guy. Ask questions in lecture and he will give you better clarity. Funny for an organic teacher with lots a heart. Make use of the tutorial center and his office hours to make it easier on him and you and put your best foot forward.
Dr. Neal was very helpful. He came into the class and I was glad I chose him. Go to class because he gives attendance quizzes, and use his exam study guide because they help ALOT. The problems he assigns are somewhat helpful. There are problems that really help, and there are ones that are pointless. Overall i would defiantly recommend him.
This rating is long overdue. Dr. Neal is one of the coolest guys around and probably the nicest and most approachable professor I have ever had. Very knowledgeable about Organic Chemistry. If you attend his lectures, do the homework problems, and devote at least a week of study time for each test, you will make an A.
Dr. Neal is by far the best chemistry teacher here because he will do anything to help students understand, is patient, and extremely easy to approach and welcoming. The only reason his class is hard is because the subject matter is difficult. Do the review study guides. If you have a choice take NEAL. He's great!!!!
BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. He is really clear and explains things very well. He genuinely cares about you understanding the material, and answers questions in class. He even comes to our lab lectures. His study guides are super helpful and he is always around to answer questions. If you want to make an A in chem, take him.
The class was very difficult, but that was not his fault. Dr. Neal is a great professor, and he really tries to make the students learn. I hated the online homework, but it probably saved me because it required me to understand the concepts. I would recommend him if you have to take the class.
Great guy. Great teacher. Just a hard class. Online HW helps grades a bit. Gave some extra credit too. Don't think I used the textbook once. I barely got a C, so maybe you should use yours.
Dr. Neal is really good at what, and how he teaches. His exams are very reasonable and he gives a comprehensive study guide before each exam. He offered access to lecture slides well before classes started. Loved his class, would have taken it again with him had I failed.
This class is not an easy one but Neal is willing to help a lot. Read your book cuz that what helps me get an A in the class.
Definitely your best bet for any of the organic courses. Makes things much less complicated than other professors and gives great study guides for each test, which you're unlikely to get at all from the others. Makes the material borderline easy.
He is a great Chem professor! He is interesting to listen to and he makes great powerpoints for his lectures which he posts ahead of time and include all the information you need to know for exams. I highly recommend going to class as much as you can because he explains hard concepts very clearly and gives extra points. & he drops your lowest exam
Dr. Neal is by far one of the best professors I've had in my four years at UT. Going to class is a must. He has clicker questions and the lectures are extremely informative and break the material down into more simple components. You would be crazy to take this class with anyone else.
He was my best chemistry teacher ever! Organic chemistry is tough, but this teacher did his best to help all of his students. He was very easy to follow during lectures and gave study guides for the tests. I would definitely recommend taking him!
Best professor I've had. At any level. He makes the material unbelievably clear and will help you in any way possible. It would be suicide not to take him for organic chemistry. There's no curve or extra credit - because you won't need it. If you try, you'll be prepared for every single exam. Taking him again for organic II.
This class made the concepts I learned in Organic Chem easier to grasp. There are no tests, but you do have reading quizzes and about 4 homework assignments. He lets you discuss the reading assignment before taking the quiz. The big grade is a paper, but he lets you pick your own topic so it's not bad at all. Would highly recommend.
I went into organic chemistry thinking it was going to be just awful. Luckily I had Dr. Neal so no need to worry. I heard horror stories all semester about some of the other organic classes that made me even more grateful I had Dr. Neal. He makes the material borderline easy. You HAVE to show up to class or elseyou will fall behind and not catch up
Dr. Neal is a very dedicated professor and it shows. There are countless ways of getting help from him outside of class and he does his best to make sure everyone is prepared for his exams. He is very clear with what he wants and sticks to it no matter what. He's also one of the few technologically proficient professors, so that's also a big plus!
Dr. Neal is a great chemistry teacher! He is very organized and makes it very clear what he expects of you. He presents the material in a way that makes it easy to understand. If you put the effort in, you will get a good grade.
Ok Neal. He is a great lecturer so if you want an A don't miss or read the book. To get an A you got to do well on the first two tests (like upper A). The beginning material is basic, but after test two the material gets significantly harder. Tests four and five are killers. Study hard for them and KNOW the mechs and you will come out with an A.
Lectures are alright; take notes and you should be fine. Tests require quite a bit of studying but a lot of it is basic memorization. Neal is a satisfactory lecturer, but is a pain to deal with 1 on 1. He doesn't really seem to care about the individual students but is only there to give the baseline lecture with minimal support
Difficult subject but pretty awesome teacher. The subject requires a HUGE AMOUNT of memorization or reactions. Try to make an A for the first 2 tests because the last 3 are hard, especially if you didn't memorize reactions. Neal is very passionate about chemistry and loves to throw tricks in the tests as well.
Although Neal is an okay lecturer and is there for you during office hours, he tries to throw you curveballs on the exams. For example, he would give a mechanism that you've never seen, that would be 30% of the exam. His "study guides" are only useful for determining how he's going to trick you. Real exams are MUCH more difficult.
Dr. Neal's 360 class is terrible. The lectures and homework are not directed toward tests. It's like he's using a completely different textbook to base the exams on. He's great for 350, but do not take him for 360.
Organic chemistry 2 is the hardest class that I've ever taken and there is no way around it. The key is to find a great teacher like Dr. Neal and to study like you've never done before. Dr. Neal is the most caring teacher I've had so far. He truly cares if you are learning or not, but expects you to study. He does love to throw curveballs on tests
Good teacher! Spring snow days that made the class much more difficult than usual. First tests are pretty straight-forwarded but then the reaction memorization comes and its difficult. Make sure you practice and memorize each reaction type because that is the majority of the test. Extra credit homework can boost your grade!
Organic can get tough, but Dr. Neal is definitely there to help. He holds group and private office hours to work out problems. He gives extra credit throughout the semester. His lectures are thorough and leave little need for reading the book. He also gives practice tests before each exam, which are incredibly helpful.
Neal tries to be helpful but he loves to trick people on exams. He included a multiple choice section on the tests this year and they're designed to bring your grade down because they're filled with obscure conceptual questions. He drops a test grade, but that's as much room for error as you'll get. Don't take him if you don't have to.
Dr. Neal knows organic chemistry inside and out. The free response sections of his exams are usually pretty clear-cut, but the multiple choice is a totally different story. They're so weirdly specific, and they were known for lowering exam grades. He's pretty tricky too. If you want an A, you will have to work for it and learn absolutely everything
Org is horrible, but he makes it bearable. Exams are harder than study guides. Definitely go to his office and his hours in the library. Super nice and willing to help. I would take him again even thought this class killed my GPA. The final can make or break your grade. Reading the book helps with multiple choice questions. Go to class & do hw
Dr. Neal makes an otherwise horrible class bearable. He posts all of his lectures and study guides online. Do all the homework, extra credit, and study guides to do well in class and on tests. Multiple choice kills!
Dr. Neal is a great option for Chem 350, but Chem 360 is a completely different story. It is a much more difficult class, and Dr. Neal does not show any mercy when it comes to his students. The exams are nearly impossible to pass and they make up 80% of your final grade. I highly recommend taking someone else.
Neal was by far the hardest organic professor, but you will learn the most from him. If you put in the time, there is no reason to not pass. He is very clear with what he wants and once you get the hang of his exams, they are easy to conquer. Also, going to SI helps a ton.
Dr. Neal was a fantastic teacher for Organic 1, but his Organic 2 class is a different story. This was by far the hardest class I have ever taken, and Dr. Neal shows no mercy. You will learn a ton, but if you expect to get an A, like in organic 1, think again. He is great for the first semester, but try to avoid for organic 2.
Dr. Neal is an amazing teacher and one of my favorites. Definitely take him over any other organic professors. Don't be scared to ask for help - utilize office hours, the tutorial center, and SI sessions. GO TO CLASS. Class helps to understand and clicker points may save you in the end. Bring notes to class and take them while you do homework.
Organic will likely be an unenjoyable experience regardless- but Dr. Neal is an incredibly intelligent professor who tries his best to make everything make sense. Posts his powerpoints and gives you old exams to study. This class requires a lot of work, but he is more than willing to do whatever he can to help.
Success in organic chemistry is very possible with an encouraging teacher like Dr. Neal. Tests can be tricky, but with adequate preparation with materials given, using other resources, and practice, this is a hard, but fair class. Go to SI and office hours.
I am a junior and Neal is one of the best professors I have ever had. I have hated every chemistry class I have had and struggled through them all. Neal explains things well, he is available for office hours multiple times per week, and is always willing to meet outside of those hours. Helps to have a chemistry professor speaking clear english.
Dr. Neal is probably the best teacher I've ever had. His tests are very hard, but he gives you everything you need to succeed. All notes are posted online, and he gives you a study guide and an old test to look at before each test. If you use those and ask him for help outside of class, an A is definitely possible in these very tough classes.
Dr. Neal has been one of my favorite professors. He is very up front with the class, his lectures are intuitive and informative, and there are a good amount of chances for extra credit. Definitely made a difficult topic understandable.
Solid Professor. If you don't pay attention or do all of the homework, good luck, but Dr. Neal provides you with all the tools you need to do well. Tests are basically your entire grade but he provides a small amount of extra credit and ample study materials. Glad I chose him as my professor.
Dr. Neal is An amazing teacher. I missed a large amount of class time due to school activities and he made it extremely easy for me to stay on task and up to date. Never opened the book. And test are directly from his slides. if you can, take him.
He makes Organic Chemistry I enjoyable (as much as it can be). He is very helpful and truly tries his best to help you understand the material well.
Very sarcastic and open about how he feels about chemistry. He is not afraid to answer any questions in class and will love you if you do.
Took Organic 1 & 2 over the summer with Dr. Neal, and he is undoubtedly my favorite professor in college so far. He's available most of the day and definitely go to office hours as much as possible because he will help you until you get it. Very fair grader, utilizes technology perfectly, and overall a very helpful, caring person.
He is very sarcastic and love to answer questions during lecture. The exams are hard but they are what you would expect given the course.
Dr. Neal is by far one of the better professors I've had at UT. He provides you with ample opportunities to do well with study materials and extra credit assignments. Go to class, actively do the homework, go to office hours and SI sessions if needed, and use the study materials and there's no reason you shouldn't do well.
Dr. Neal is a fantastic chemistry teacher. He is extremely fair and understands exactly what students struggle with during organic chemistry. He always posts study guides and old tests that are super helpful in studying. If you do everything that he posts and pay attention in class, organic can be a bearable class.
Neal is fantastic. Organic is a horrible class but Neal explains things well to help understand the material. He hosts his office hours in the library to encourage group participation and to allow students to feel more comfortable coming. His tests are very difficult and he likes to throw in curve balls, but he offers grade boosters with clickers
Good professor but goes way too fast. Like all orgo teachers you do have to teach yourself lots of it but he tries to make it as easy as he can and is always available for help. Take him but know he makes you work for your grade.
Very nice guy. Has a lot of sarcasm which can be a little bit intimidating at times. Make sure you don't burn out towards the end like I did. The final has a large determination of your grade.
Dr. Neal is an amazing teacher. He does his best to make sure everyone understands the material in class and has office hours several times throughout the week for students to ask questions. You MUST work hard in this class if you want to do well. Do not go to him right before the test. It's not fun battling 50 other people to ask a question.
He is very clear cut and teaches you exactly what you need to know for the exam. Lectures are engaging and he has clicker questions. Chegg is your friend on the homework. Memorize your reactions for the exams and you will be good to go. Do not forget Chem 350 reactions because you will need them throughout the class.
Dr. Neal was a great teacher. He gives old exams and study guides to help you with the layout of the exam. The best way to take notes is to print off his powerpoint and fill in the blanks. He is always willing to help. Working hard will pay off.
Organic is hard but Neal makes it possible to understand. Has office hours in the library so you can get all the help you need. Explains material very thoroughly and offers help on all homeworks.
Dr. Neal was recommended to me and I adjusted my schedule just for this class--BIGGEST REGRET EVER. The class content, homework, and the study guides do not prepare you for the exams at all! I did not miss one class, had over a 100% on the homework, and I still failed the class. I spent more time on this class than all other classes combined.
Neal is a fantastic choice for organic. The material is hard but he presents it well and explains thoroughly. His exams are super tough but manageable. He provides a lot of study material and is very approachable when you have questions.
Dr. Neal is an amazing organic teacher; really knows the subjects and is super approachable and will always answer questions as best he can to eliminate any confusion. The people that claim that the content on the exams wasn't "covered in hw or study guides" are literally so wrong. The material is hard, and he prepares you as well as he can.
Dr. Neal is probably your best choice for organic. He has plenty of options for office hours. His has a lot of in-class clicker questions and examples that help you learn the material, and he works through most of the material in class. This class isn't easy and you have to put in the work, but he is very available to help you if needed.
Dr. Neal is a great organic professor. He goes over a lot of examples in class and provides a lot of practice examples to help with exams. His study guides and old exams help a lot when studying as well. He gives lots of extra credit on tests and on homework assignments. Only complaint I have is he wasn't very approachable, imo, for questions.
One of my favorite Professors at UT. The class was rather difficult, but I genuinely learned from him. Office hours saved me and are really for your benefit, so go!
The class is simply very hard. Get ready for that. However he does all he can to try to make life easier for us so I respect that. Pay attention in class. Take well notes. Ask questions. Study hard. You will pass the class!
Come to class prepared to learn and listen and be sure to refresh on Chem 260, because it is assumed that you'll just know and remember most everything from 260. Neal is a great professor, thoroughly explains everything in lecture and truly WANTS everyone to do well, but you will have to work for it.
Dr. Neal is an exceptional professor. Organic Chemistry is not easy by any means but he truly does want his students to succeed. Grading, assignments, and tests are very clear. Show up to lecture, go to his office hours, do all the homework, and study hard and you will get a good grade in this class. Take Dr. Neal!
Take Dr. Neal. OChem is hard regardless of the teacher, but Dr. Neal is very knowledgable on the subject. He is very willing to help outside of class as well. Class is very straightforward. Go to class, do the homework, study HARD, repeat.
Dr. Neal is a great organic chemistry teacher. Attending lectures is important. He is accessible outside class and clearly conveys what you should learn for the test. I took him for organic chemistry 1 and 2 and would definitely take him again.
Great lecturer. Actually makes chem make sense. Tests aren't necessarily easy (cmon, its orgo), but they are very fair. Willing to help and is very straightforward.
Professor Neal is one of the best professors and human beings. He is extremely caring for his students and truly wants them to succeed. I hated/sucked at gen chem and did really well in O Chem because he makes the material simple and explains it so well. I had him during the corona pandemic and he was absolutely amazing!!! TAKE HIM
Dr. Neal is one of my favorite professors! Ochem is a difficult subject, but Dr. Neal makes the material clear and easy to understand. He really cares about his students' success. Take Dr. Neal over any of the other professors. He really knows what he is talking about. I would definitely take him again.
As everyone else has said, the subject is one of the most difficult undergrad subjects in my opinion. Dr. Neal is what helped me survive both 1 and 2. I believe that completely. Not once was he unhelpful in terms of answering questions or explaining material or offering to go over things again for anyone. You get out what you put in, period.
Dr. Neal is the best organic chem. professor. He has clear expectations regarding exams and his class in general. Only tests on specific, necessary topics, making studying a lot easier. He takes time to explain/give updates to the class and clearly cares about his students. Wish I would've taken him for both organic courses!
Dr. Neal is fantastic. I would highly recommend taking his class.
He makes help very accessible. I'd recommend him as a professor.
Best chemistry teacher at the entire school
I absolutely love him. He is so great at teaching. I never understood chemistry but organic chemistry was a breeze with him. Take him if you can.
Every chemistry teacher sucks compared to this guy. If you want to pass organic chemistry with a deep understanding of the subject while also being treated, this is the guy to take. Also Neal was the only teacher to transition to online and actually make accommodations for his students. If you care he'll care about you. man is also hilarious.
Dr. Neal is a gem of a chemistry professor. He gives you a solid, in-depth understanding of organic chemistry while not giving you a feeling of being overwhelmed. He also cares about his students, and is willing to help students get the extra help they need to succeed in the course. Do yourself a favor and take Dr. Neal for organic chemistry.
"Alriiiiiight," get ready to learn about the savior of the UT chem dept. He drinks coffee straight from a pitcher & has an adorable orgo mascot puppy: Daisy. He is hilarious & explains things VERY well. I wish I had him in-person & not during COVID. My only qualm: he gives 1.5 hour long tests in 1 hour. You can easily run out of time, so practice!
Dr. Neal is by far the most competent hard science professor i've ever had. He truly cares, he's a funny guy, and hes sharp as a whip. Organic is an extremely difficult class no matter how you slice it. Taking it with Neal made life so much better. I watched my other friends suffer with bad professors while I had Neal break everything down so well
Dr. Neal is an excellent professor. 100% recommend taking him for any organic chemistry class. He cares about his students and is 100% accessible outside of class time. He makes the class easy to learn in and will help you if needed.
I would take Neal over and over again if I could. He is soooo willing to help and is such a good lecturer. The content can be hard, but thats just the material in general. Def recommended Neal for orgo!! One of the best teachers I have had
I liked that the lectures were divided into smaller, pre-recorded lectures. It allowed me to pause and pick up as needed. Dr. Neal gives plenty of resources to help you do well on the exam (study guides, old exams, worksheets), and some of the lectures were just like office hours for those who needed extra help. If you put in the time, it's not bad
Dr. Neal's Orgo 1 class online was very enjoyable. He posted lectures so that you could get ahead if you needed to. He is a good communicator, provides necessary resources to succeed, and is very accessible outside of class. 4 tests and a final seemed like there was always something to study for, however. I would recommend him.
Dr. Neal is hands down the best chem professor I've ever had. I was so nervous about taking orgo bc I wasn't the biggest fan of gen chem but he explains the material so well that I actually find myself enjoying the lectures. Super organized online section, extra credit built into each exam. Organic is hard but you won't go wrong taking it with Neal
I had Neal for both orgo 1 and orgo 2. Both were taught online but I am sure he is just as good of a professor in person. You get what you put into this class but Neal is always willing to help. He has office hours nearly everyday of the week and an online calendar to book appointments. Stay on top of your work and go to class. An A is attainable!
Dr. Neal is the greatest professor I have ever had. Organic Chemistry is hard, but Dr. Neal makes learning it much more bearable. He is super accessible, a great lecturer, and is willing to go the extra mile to make sure we understand the topics. The tests are a time crunch, but he gives you the material you need to master them. Great professor.
Hands down best professor at UT
Orgo is the hardest class I have taken to date at UTK, but Dr. Neal is the best person to help you pass. He is funny and is extremely fair with grading, even with hard content. Dr. Neal is the best chance you have of passing Orgo but you're gonna need to study a lot, like alot alot. SI helps a lot so go to those and ask questions.
Enjoyable professor. This is a tough class and his tests are really difficult. You will study a lot and still do poorly. Some of his exams and lectures have additional information that other professors dont cover, but the extra work may be useful for the final since its departmental. Tough class, solid choice of a professor though.
Great professor, hard class. He actually makes it enjoyable. Watch videos before lecture and come to lecture with questions if you want a good grade.
I had him for 260 and got an A, but if you think it's going to be the same, run now. Dr. Neal was awful this semester and had a huge attitude. We had the lowest averages ever on the free-response with a 36% on one test, and he had the audacity to sit there and say it was our fault. He takes no accountability whatsoever, don't take him for 360. RUN!
Overall, he wasnt too bad, its just that the course itself is so difficult. Study hard and youll get a semi-decent grade. He answers emails in a reasonable time frame and is helpful, but get ready to seriously study hard.
He's a great teacher, but the material is extremely difficult. There is no extra credit, and the exams are very hard to do well in. Lectures made sense, but the homework was impossible
Organic is hard, don't get me wrong, but if you have to take it- take him!! Dr. Neal is the saving grace of the UTK Chem department for a reason. He posts all the lectures on youtube so if you need to rewatch to absorb things better you have the opportunity. Very open to helping you if you go to him. very sarcastic but he does care
Dr. Neal used to be an amazing professor and everyone's suggestion for Organic chemistry however, in my experience last semester his teaching has severely depleted. Yes, he posted his lectures on YouTube for students to rewatch but, he is not very approachable and will make you feel entirely stupid for asking a question. Very Tough grader.
Dr. Neal is not a good professor anymore, he is very rude to students as well. He speaks down to students who are simply asking questions and he is very unapproachable. He does not seem like he cares about his students. I made an A in his Orgo 1 class but I knew I never wanted to take anything with him. I passed on my own, no thanks to him.
Dr. Neal is overall a good professor. The course is very difficult and requires a lot of time to study. His exams are also difficult but not impossible. If you study hard, pay attention in lecture, and do the homework you should be okay.
You can tell Dr. Neal has been teaching o-chem for a long time. His lectures are very structured and tell you everything you need to know for the test. He also had a youtube playlist of all of the lectures which is super helpful. O-chem is hard, so you'll have to study hard, but Neal makes it do-able; although, he is not the nicest person.
Dr. Neal is a fantastic teacher who truly wants his students to understand the material. He made organic chemistry much more comprehensible. He has a good sense of humor, he is always available outside of class, and he takes time to review difficult material.
Professor Neal is amazing! I was in his orgo 1 and orgo 2 class. I struggled more in orgo 1 than orgo 2. You must put effort in this class to pass! Go to SI, rewatch lectures on YouTube, and practice the material frequently! My best advice for this class is that you must know what you do not know so you can practice it.
If you are taking organic chemistry take Dr. Neal! He really cares about his students and wants you to do well in the course. The material is challenging but if you take time to learn it and study outside of class you can get a good grade.
I had this professor for orgo 2 and I thought that he was an amazing professor. He is always available through email or office hours. I highly recommend taking his class, he only teaches what you need to know for the test and everything on the exam comes from his lecture slides. Also DO NOT repeat practice tests/questions (do new ones always)
Steven Neal taught to the entire lecture hall like he was teaching one on one which made me want to pay attention. He always took the time to answer questions and make sure we understood before moving onto the next topic. He teaches at a good pace and understands that this is all new information to us.
Orgo is just a very tough class but Dr. Neal is open about everything and will answer any questions you have about the exams and has lots of opportunities to get help. He does not curve exams and those make up most of the class points. He splits up the OWL homework and only picks questions that genuinely help you learn the content.
Good dude, very nice. Literally second time taking orgo 1 though, and with tests this hard we don't really need to go over literally everything for so much detail. I do love the man but this is ridiculous. Don't suggest if you have adhd. Like there 100% needs to be a curve, not a shift from the syllabus.
Dr. Neal is a great professor. This class is difficult by nature, but he provides exams from previous semester which help studying. He is a great teacher and makes sure you understand the topics if you pay attention. 10/10 would recommend. I should finish with a high B or and A.
This was my second time taking orgo 1. I loved how Neal uses powerpoints that he makes and goes over them in lecture. He also has a youtube channel where he goes over basically each lecture, previously recorded. Attendance is not mandatory besides the occasional clicker question.
Dr. Neal is an entertaining and nice guy. That being said, I had difficulties reaching him outside of class and struggling to maintain focus during lecture. He is constantly side tracked, and we have ended up chapters behind on half of our exams. Love him as a person, but as a professor he makes it hard to learn in class. He does have Youtube video
Dr. Neal is a good professor but lectures are incredibly boring. I had a hard time learning in his class and had to teach myself almost everything. I would not take his class again just because his teaching style didn't work for me.
I wanted to like Dr. Neal's teaching style but it didn't work for me. If you take him make sure the rest of your schedule is easy, because studying outside of class is necessary. We always seemed to be behind in class. There was lots of homework each week that didn't help with exams and the exams were harshly graded. Had to drop due to the workload
Dr. Neal was a fun and engaging professor. He did take attendance with clickers, but very rarely and they are only open for about 30 sec. He explained orgo well and made me enjoy and understand the subject. I plan on taking him again for orgo 2.
Dr Neal teaches orgo in a way that makes most of the concepts understandable if you have some idea of what you are doing. His lectures are long, and he moves at a decent pace, with some sarcatic jokes thrown in. He is very accessible.
ORGO II is hard period. Dr. Neal is a good professor who explains things well and I enjoyed his lectures. Just study for 2wks at least before exams and know your stuff from Orgo I.
He is good! Organic is hard no matter what professor but he makes it okay! He is a super sweet guy and talks a lot about his family. You can tell he cares about his students.
Dr. Neal is a great professor! Although organic chemistry can be challenging, he is very approachable and offers many points outside of exams to earn.
He stopped doing clickers this semester and now you get a take-home "quiz" once a week so you have to go to class to get it. But you should go to class anyways or you'll prob fail the exam. He's great about answering questions and has lots of office hours.
Its orgo 2, it's a tough thing to teach. Go to lectures or you will seriously struggle. Imo the canvas organization is not the best to navigate, but it is fine. He gives a lot of study materials for exams which is nice. It's pretty average, I would probably take him again if there wasn't a better option.
Terrible at explaining information. Refuses to dumb down information and repeat himself. Also incredibly condescending. Allows regrade requests, but always finds a way around giving you back any points. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU WANT TO PASS.
I've loved Dr. Neal's teaching style. Orgo is hard. But he does make a genuine effort to see that everyone understands -- especially if you go to office hours or have a meeting with him. He keeps lectures engaging and does not talk down to students/make people feel stupid for asking "dumb" questions. He is overall very kind and a great teacher.
For what the Chemistry department at UT has to offer, I would say that Dr. Neal is one of the better options. In no way is this class easy, but he has lecture slides where I could take my own notes on top of his which was helpful. He also had videos of the lectures on Canvas that were helpful when reviewing for the test.
I really loved Dr. Neal's Orgo I class. I was nervous going in but I ended up understanding all of his lectures very clearly and did better on the exams than even Gen Chem. He is also very approachable and clearly wants his students to succeed. I would def take him for Orgo over any other chem professor
Took him for orgo 1 and 2 and he does a great job at teaching a difficult subject. He posts all the notes and has youtube videos of the lessons that are very useful if you miss class or need to refresh on the material. Overall a great professor for this hard class.
Dr. Neal is a great professor that makes a difficult class more bearable. A lot of the topics covered were very complex, but he was super helpful! He posts blank and annotated notes, his own youtube videos explaining the topics, weekly participation quizzes that give formatting for exam questions, and is great at answering any questions!
GOATTTTTT. His class is very difficult but he is the best lecturer and has so many resources to do well. TAKE HIM FOR ORGANIC!!!
Dr. Neal's teaching style may not work for everyone, but those who engage with his system can learn a lot. Use unstuck ai and the textbook to supplement the lectures. The workload is heavy, but attendance and effort pay off.
I loved taking Dr. Neal for CHEM 260 and plan on taking him for CHEM 360!! He gives participation quizzes that you pick up and turn in during class that are very similar to the material on the exams. He also gives study guides and old exams that are very helpful when studying. He has office hours almost every day and is very accessible!!
I personally did not have a great experience with Dr. Neal. I believe it was just communication issues but we had a couple interactions where I felt fairly disrespected. However, I understand my experience is a unique one. Most students like him, and he is very open to being accessible outside of class. Id recommend office hours. Lots of studying.
I didn't personally click with Neal's teaching for this specific course, but he clearly cares a lot about making sure the content is understood by his students. This course is particularly difficult, but unlike most profs, he clearly understands this and does what he can to convey the material in a good way.
Dr. Neal did a good job of covering all the material and I liked how he organized his notes on canvas. However, his lectures can be a little boring. Overall, I had a good experience and would recommend him for Orgo II.
Dr. Neal is awesome! CHEM 360 is really difficult but if you go to class, do the homework/quizzes, and go to office hours, you will do just fine. Sometimes his notes were all over the place which was hard to keep up with. I thought the exams were always fair.
Personally, Dr. Neal's personality and teaching style did not work for me. He would go on unnecessary tangents and was poor at responding to his emails. At the time, he was the only option for this class, but I recommend taking Dr. Carroll or Dr. Thomas instead.
I loved Dr. Neal. This class is hard and you will have to study a lot but if you put in the work, you can do it. He was super accessible, having office hours 4 days of the week, and was super helpful whenever I asked him questions. There are take home quizzes to track attendance, but you need to go to class anyway to learn the info so..
Steven Neal? More like Crashout Neal. This is one of the worst professors I have ever had the displeasure of taking. I would always talk about “Can it get any worse?”. Well trust me, this guy somehow found a way to make it worse. The littlest things warranted the largest and most disrespectful responses. Do yourself a favor and avoid this guy.
Very funny guy who obviously knows his stuff. Most orgo professors are pretty good at teaching and he is no exception. His exams weren't terribly difficult but they required hours of studying to earn high grades. The best way I learned was through SI.
Overall Neal is a good professor. I did much better in his Advanced Organic class than I did in Introductory Organic. That being said, his exams are are VERY difficult. They're fair in the questions they ask, but you need to put the hours and studying in to do well. His lecture are informative, and he is accessible easily outside of class.
Dr. Neal was amazing for Orgo 2! If he gets a bad rap I think it has more to do with the course content being very difficult. I thought he was a great guy and engaging in class. He teaches Organic Chem very well!!! He also ended up altering the grade scale based on class performance which helped a lot!
I had Neal for Orgo 1 and 2 and can say Orgo 2 was a million times more difficult than Orgo 1. I know the class is difficult in itself, but sometimes it felt like Neal was trying to fail us as the exams were SO DIFFICULT. He gives a lot of extra credit though and there was a curve at the end so I guess it all balanced out? overall he's not bad
I took Neal for O-chem 1 and O-chem 2 and failed both times. His teaching style was just not a right fit for me, so I don't think I failed due to him being a bad teacher. However, I did reach out for advice when I was failing O-chem 2 and never heard back from him, so I just dropped the class to retake it with a different professor.
LA upon chiral centers explained with blindness. LA upon IUPAC names twisted until no logic remained. LA upon stereochemistry turned into shadows instead of clarity. In this class the path to understanding became cursed. Truly LA follows such teaching.
Obviously Organic Chem is not an easy class, but Neal tries his best to make it fun. He uses quizzes graded on completion that are due on Thursday that are relevant and give good feedback. He also has lecture videos and practice exams and is always willing to help. Homework is super easy too!
Dr. Neal is a decently good teacher. He has good Canvas organization and does plenty of office hours. His lectures do feel long, boring, and sometimes he rushes through things, but he cares about the content and is always willing to help students understand. With good study habits and maybe supplemental help (yt videos, SI) the class is doable.
Dr. Neal was a great professor! Orgo is a hard and boring class, but he added humor into his lectures wherever he could. He was very accessible outside of class, and made it clear that he cared about us doing well. The class itself consisted of three midterms, homework assignments, weekly participation quizzes, and one final. Would take him again.
There is a reason why Neal's averages are consistently at least 10% worse than Caroll's. Exams are EXTREMELY difficult, and they're pretty much the only thing graded. His lectures are boring and make no sense, but his YouTube videos are surprisingly good. Study for HOURS and go to SI and you might be ok. Hardest class ever. WAY harder than orgo 1.
Dr. Neal does not know how to teach the material in an easy to understand way. He differs from the other professors on some of the chemistry he teaches (he teaches it wrong). Take someone else
Long story short, orgo is hard. If it isn't for you, great. Class was mostly graded off 3 midterms and a cumulative final. Study hard. The homework is online on OWL and pretty easy. The final was significantly easier imo than the 3rd and even 2nd midterms. Also, the first midterm is VERY easy, so study hard on that for a good early boost.
