i kinda enjoy his sardonic sense of humor although his classes tend to leave one more confused than before you enter

I think he's totally cool. I got a D+ on my first essay and an A- on my second essay and I didn't agree with his views when i wrote my conclusion, i actually disagreed with him and he still gave me an A-. The crybabies are wrong, his books are understandable. Blue Dreams especially easy.

Don't listen to these morons here. I suspect they didn't like his politics and were intellectually lazy. Take this class if you want to be challenged. There is alot of reading, but honestly, if you put forth an effort, you wil do fine.

Very helpful with writing. hard to believe anyone could complain about a professor who lets you write and rewrite papers for a better grade.

Steve is very wise in the subject. U will learn a lot, even if U don't try 2. He is very easy to get a good grade, provided u are not lazy and actually try to succeed. The best part is he will HELP u, but u have to ask. Very willing to grade drafts before paper, how can you not ace the class????????

he wants students to have more than just the chance to take a bunch of meaningless multiple choice tests. very helpful in writing

Gotta wicked awesome sarcasm bit, worth it just for that. I learned more about racism than anything my highschool teachers with their 'definition this, defintion that' approach ever taught me. no tests with this dude too!

Steve is the most inspired prof. I've ever had! He's a genius in his field. I learned an incredible amount and recommend him to everyone. Unless you are just lazy, take this class. Your mind will be opened!!!

Dr.Philion is a very fair professor. Don't be afraid if he criticizes your arguments. You have to understand that he is sarcastic and not attacking you as a person. Great class (just show up for it)

In a word, outtasight man.Steve Sharp as a tack, witty, funny, and spends tons of time helping with writing. You will learn more about racism than you ever thought you knew.

I debated with Steve all semester long. My final grade? "A". End of my story.

I liked that we didn't just take tests and memorize stuff. I thought the lectures were funny and provocative.

Avery very important class

I enjoyed this prof, he didn't talk to us like little children and he didn't expect us to agree with him inorder to got an A in the class. His humor is funny.

I take this guy now in summer sesion, a great analysis he provides students, what seems confusing suddenly just makes sense. I never saw the links he makes between the past and the present, everyone should have to take his course. And those that commented on his helping wtih writing are right, noone in St Cloud does what he does.

I liked the links he made with his life as a student protest organizer, photos and all prety cool stuff! he helps with writing all the time. i learned most from the w dubois writings he gave us

He doesn't preach to students telling them what to do, he just lays it out and you do as you can. He thinks students are as smart as he is and that helpsus more than anything else. Somebody said that below, no baby talk, very refreshing style, wanna take him in the future.

Best summer course I ever took. A soc professor, who like the other students say is not a preacher but a professor who shows you the history of racism in clear terms and links to bigger issues like capitalism instead of going through the laundry list of 'isms' [his criticisms of the 'isms' approach was hiliarious). He's very passionate i lecture

I liked him, he was always available in his office and willing to answer questions, read essay drafts. The guy below sounds like a whining baby. Steve talked to us like adults, it was unique at St Cloud and he really believed in our abilities. good for him!

Ok, I registered for this class because it's required and i need to graduate but it ended up being really interesting. Prof. Philion is one of the greatest teachers i've ever had. If you want to expand your views on race and discrimination you should sign up for this class.

He's a great professor

Philion is the best prof! His classes are fun and entertaining as well as very informative. He is very knowledgable and extremely helpful. I would recommend his class to anyone.

Cool class, prof made lots of comments on papers, met in his office, easygoing...funny wit.

His lectures are "animated" to say the least; very funny guy. He does expect alot out of you and doesn't address the topics in the readings directly. Interesting class, 100+ pgs. of reading per week and three 5-7 page essays, but no exams. Attendance not req'd, but he does give 1-2 quizzes per week on average worth about 20% of your grade.

At the beginning of the sem. I would dread going to this class, but a few weeks into it I liked it better.I found his lectures hard to follow at first, but after taking notes and doing the readings, it's a much more intersting class. He's not a prof. that's going to try and fail you, if you TRY you will do well. Show the effort, and he notices.

I agree, I liked the class and professor Phillion's going over our drafts of papers with such care. I heard a student whining about the class before class a few times but noticed she didn't go very often and didn't seem to do the readings either. And yes he is very veryfunny too!

I gave the professor drafts and he wrote tons of comments on it and let students like me revising as much as we wanted too. He answered email questions really fast. Class pushed me more than I expected and I like to get pushed to do better.

Dr. Philion truly cares how you do in this class. He helps you through every paper and is there anytime of the day. The class is very interesting; go to class read the articals and ask him for help on the papers...easy A!

Philion is a professor that you have to get used to. You will want to drop the class at first because his teaching methods are extremely wierd. Pay close attention to his lectures and get help from him when he offers because it definitely pays off!! If you take his suggestions, it's an easy A.

DO NOT listen to the last person, he/she obviously went to maybe two classes. He is not all about private schools and bashing public schools! He is all about civil rights about facts not about opinion. He is sarcastic in his lecture. I likeed this class alot he is tuff and will challenge you to do better. I like a challenge and that is what I received from Philion. I am not taking loans ou and going in depth for an easy A. You will spend alot of time on your papers and reading about Sociologist of our past like Marx and Webber but if you need help he will stay after to talk

Oh my god is he a tough grader. He is pretty funny, but your papers are almost all he grades on and you only write 3! You must attend if you want to do well, cause you must incorporate lectures into papers. Wish I could take with someone else! Really loves the subject though which helps cause he is always willing to help. I have mixed feelings.

Extremely intelligent professor - probably one of the best scholars at SCSU. Do not miss an opportunity to learn from him - he may be tough as far as work requirement goes - but then, isn't a challenging education the reason we came to college? He is a very good mentor, and an excellent person to learn critical thinking from. Take him!

A funny prof. Lets you write many drafts, grreat book on immigrants. Easy.

Take classes from this professor if you actually want to learn something. If you are looking for an easy A, don't bother. Knowing how to write effectively and coherently will help you get jobs. Most professors don't want the heat of being "tough graders." Goes out of his way to help you be successful if you are willing to ask for the help.

I loved this class, and feel that I really learned the material from Dr. Philion. Most teachers who don't teach English won't push their students to high quality writing, but the pressure was palpable! Students need to have a teacher challenging their abilities, or they barely show up to class!! Take his classes if you really want to learn.

He is the best teacher. You will learn a lot. He is an awsome.

Dr. Philion is very passionate about social theory! He is fun and very helpful. The only downfall is he talks fast and often times I wasn't sure which social theorist he was referring to. The papers are long but he allows several rough drafts and gives back great feedback. I would recommend taking his class, but be ready to work hard.

This professor was extremely difficult, but if you read the articles and spent time on your papers it will pay off in the end! He wants to see you succeed in the class so just go every day and take TONS of notes and READ READ READ and you will do okay!

3 long papers! One quiz each week but its only one question. My advice if you have to take it: go the write center, visit office hours, take notes, and pay attention in class. He tells you the answer to the essay questions in class !!

A lot of students struggle with his courses but usually they were students that didn't to the reading. It's critical to do the reading. Has high expectations but more than available to meet and give feedback as many times as needed. Sometimes unclear but just keep meeting him! He appreciates individuals genuinely working and cares less for grades.

Philion is very intelligent in the subject of social theory. Expect to read, re read, and read again for the best understanding. He wants to see you progress! So he will challenge you. Great teacher, will work with you. Buy a lecture recorder! Take lots of notes. Build a study group with classmates. Participate and don't skip class. And take notes!

Dr. Philion is a great guy. He assigns 3 long papers for the majority of your grade. He has very high standards but he will help you. I highly recommend a lecture recorder for this class, your notes must be included in your papers and recording lectures makes this much easier-if you have the patience to go through hours of lecture when writing.

Very good professor! Class is somewhat hard but engaging so it's worth it! He has all readings in d2l so you don't have to buy a book. Look listening to him talk he's pretty funny. Will take time to help you 1:1 always! Looks like Bill nye the science guy. Very smart.

He is very passionate and helpful. the class has 3 reading essays and it is straight A. i will recommend students to take his classes.

Dr. Philion is eccentric with his lectures and so smart, makes the dense theory into easily understandable lectures. Don't need a voice recorder, just show up and take notes (make sure to date them!). Writing heavy (three main papers) , pop quizzes on articles (all on D2L), no tests. Really interesting topics!

You will have 4 papers and 4/5 group discussions over D2L. You have to include things he says in his lecture in your papers, so make sure you take good notes in class and pay attention. You can submit drafts of your paper to him before it is due though to make sure you are doing it right which is super helpful.

Easy as long as you do the readings, can get feedback on drafts. Uses interesting books instead of boring textbooks, responds to emails really fast.
