This is the worst teacher at our school by 90% of the people I associate with

Material is difficult. Professor does his best to help

The best class ever. He lets you use a whole sheet of notebook paper front and back for a cheat sheet on every Exam. Great guy
Show up for class, and sit closer to the front if you don't want to be asked questions. He's a decent guy, and lets you have a cheat sheat for all the exams, unlike Prof Pike in the accounting 1 class.
Steve is a great guy! Kept me laughing and made class fun. Really cares about the students. Also knows his stuff. One of the best teachers at UT.
Steve is great. Yes, cheat sheet on the exams, but he also drops the lowest exam grades. Great teacher with even better stories. He's so funny. Steve, YOU'RE the king!
Made accounting more boring than it already is. Annoying homework assignments where he gives out a bunch of questions and only collects one.
Easy class, lets you use cheat sheet.
His class is fun. Instead of lecturing he actually tries to get students involved. If no one has any questions on some days, we get out early. Nothing can beat using letting you use a cheat sheet for exams. Plus he drops you lowest score.
Makes difficult subjects interesting and applicable to real life situations. Don't get disheartened with low exam grades in ACC 352 because there is usually a curve at the end.
This guy smokes some serious pot. I sat there and watched him smoke up in his car the morning of the last day before Christmas break...
Awesome teacher..he doesnt teach you mch but his class is an easy B or A...and you gotta love hi mfor that!..he is also very willing to help if you do want to learn the material.
He's an old fart thats anal about collecting homework which might I add is graded by his kids.....oh those damn kids by the end of semester I felt like I knew them!

good teacher just do what he says and u will be fine!U DO GET A CHEAT SHEET FOR EXAMS IF YOU ARE A RETARD AND DONT WRITE THE CORRECT STUFF DOWN THATS YOUR PROBLEM!
Interesting, excited about subject.
He is a very good teacher, but the class is still hard. He allows you a cheat sheet on all exams which helps alot.
I have had five classes with Prof Platau and also had him as an advisor for undergrad. He makes the subject matter interesting and attainable. A quality individual and the ultimate professional
Great guy! As previously said you are allowed a cheat sheet!Do the homework it counts for 15% and will make a difference do the homework and you will do good on exams! If you get less than a B its because you are just lazy...
Great teacher. He makes the material easy, and goes straight from the book, all you have to do is read the chapter which is 4 pages long and you'll be fine....the best part is.....THE TESTS ARE TAKE HOME...if you fail then you can be branded a retard!! Good guy, knows his stuff, and is there to help you...the homework is easy as ever as well.
Pretty easy class, but the guy sucks at life.
Unfair, does not explain very well, difficult, very high expectations coupled with a poor teaching technique. Rude, judgemental, makes off the cuff remarks.

This is the worst teacher at UT. he only cares about himself. very hard grader and set in his ways. also get ready to hear alot about his annoying kids during lecture.
He's very nice and very helpful, take advantage of office hours. Relates the class to the students, talks about things that are popular. Tests are very straight forward, definitely need to know and be comfortable with the material. the only good accounting professor!
I really enjoy his class. He keeps things interesting, and I would def recommend trying to get him if you can.
Not helpful at all, in fact in some cases he threatens to mark your grade down if you "bother" him with questions or emails pertaining to the class.
If you want to do well in this class you MUST read ahead and you must do every single homework in order to pull in an A or B. If you don't, nothing really makes sense. He allows you to construct "cheat sheets" which is where you write notes about the chapters on a piece of paper double sided. This is essential to have, but you still should read.
I really enjoyed his class. He is a really good teacher with bad jokes. If you get lost in the class he will make time to help you. He is very friendly.
lets you use a "cheat sheet" on tests, very good at explaining, kind of goofy but extremely nice, loves to teach and help students learn, tests can be difficult but with a cheat sheet it's really not bad, id love to take more classes with him!
He is such a nice guy! He really does love accounting and teaching, and it shows. He does 5 excel assignments as well as some spreadsheets and ofcourse the textbook homework, but wiley is an option. I definately rec. taking him. You can use cheat sheets which are extremely helpful. He really did try to connect accounting to the world we live in!
He is a very nice guy, but not such a great teacher. if u need help go to him during his office hours not to the ACE center!!! Alot of work test are kinda hard but he lets u use a cheat sheet. kinda an old guy is crazy about cell phones he makes u take ur cell phone battery apart during the test, he is kinda crazy
Take this professor if you can. He goes over all the homework problem by problem and over all the assignments to make sure you get a good grade. Cheat sheets are allowed too so there isn't any reason you should get at least a B.
Platau is a great professor. He knows how to get people good grades and always tries to do so. You can use a cheatsheet on his tests with anything on it. Just do your homework and assignments and you will do good. He tries to keep class entertaining.
Make sure to always pay attention in class and do all the homework. He let's you bring a cheat sheet to the test, but make sure you really know the material.
Dr. Platau is hands down the BEST professor I have encountered in my entire college career (undergrad and grad). Tax can quickly become difficult and overwhelming, but Dr. Platau structures the course so the material is understandable, managable, interesting, and even fun!
Professor P is awesome! He is kinda weird but really nice!! He lets you have a cheat sheet and for our last test he let us bring up to 3 sheets of whatever we wanted on them :) pretty cool. Even tho you can use a cheat sheet, still its best of you know the material! Take him if you can!! One of the best!!!
this professor is great. He really knows how to give the information he knows over to the students. He's funny a little weird sometimes, loves to tell stories, but overall a great professor and nice person.
Take my advice: He's a good teacher, very VERY quirky and 'old school' but all around a good person. He's pretty up tight but doesn't mind joking around ever once and a while... It's best to keep your mouth shut and don't make any cutting remarks because he WILL make you look foolish... Other than that, full page cheat sheet & drop lowest grade...
Makes advanced tax as about as interesting as it can be. Tests are difficult, but are taken at home. There are several assignments each week which require reading, thorough research of topics, and excellent writing skills (punctuation matters a lot in grading). VITA volunteering is mandatory as well. The course is very time consuming, be prepared.
Dr. Platau is the most amazing professor ever! he is so helpful even after you finish his class. He is so nice and knows how to teach and information so well. He makes the information easy. DEFINITELY TAKE HIS CLASS! LOVE HIM!
very thorough explanation and relatable real world examples.
Prof. Platau is one of the best accounting professors there is. Seems like a lot of work at first but homework is easy, and so are tests due to "cheat sheets" I highly recommend taking him
This class is very hard if you are not into Accounting. There are several projects you must do (excel and word docs), and the tests are all fill in the blank or create accounts from scratch. You get a cheat sheet on tests and that is the only thing that saved me. Platau is a nice guy, but this class is super hard and super busy.
Steve is an AWESOME accounting teacher. His tests are extremely fair and he lets you have a cheat sheet to use (front and back of paper with any notes you want on it). He uses a lot of real world examples and makes accounting a lot more understandable. Take his class!!
Professor P is an awesome professor, he is very nice and helpfl and always has office hours. His class is really hard but he wants you to be ready for the real world. If take it with him you must be ready to work hard
If you are taking this class for tax then be prepared to work hard! You are expected to attend events outside of class for points, and must participate in VITA or he will deduct points from your final grade, there are tax code assignments that you need to do and also a HUGE tax project at the end of the semester. MUST DEDICATE A LOT OF TIME!!!!!!
Loved him! As long as you do the work you will get a good grade. He lets you use cheat sheets front and back in the exams, and he gives you extra credit quizzes during the semester.. usually the answers are all 'A'. It sounds weird, but he gives homework due before he teaches the topic. SUCH help & as long as you get 75% on them its an A.
great professor, explain everything clearly, gave real life example, made me like the subject, Funny sometimes which make the class go fast, u want feel the time, if u do the work u will get a good grade, drop the the lowest test, allow cheat sheet front and back
This is one of those classes where you probably don't want to miss a day. The subject matter is long and boring, but he really tries to help you out. Allows cheat sheet for tests, has a study session the Sunday before an exam, drops your lowest exam, quiz, and project grade.
Very difficult
Exams are super tough. Hw due every class and he calls on everyone so make sure you do it or else you won't get participation points which help out a lot. You must attend a few professional events on campus. Tough grader. Hilarious guy. You must use textbook in class and on tests.
This is my second class with Dr. Platau. He has a story for every situation a tax practitioner could face and his illustrations are interesting. It makes the class go by faster.
Dr. Platau is a wonderful teacher. He has a real life examples for everything which makes the material more interesting and easier to understand. He is tough! Expect to work hard and do your best at all times. Homework for each chapter, several papers to write and the tax project. I look forward to having him as a professor again in the future.
He is difficult, and probably scares some people. I, however, loved his very dry sense of humor. SIT NEAR THE FRONT AND BE KNOWN. This class is the hardest (mostly time consuming) class I have ever taken. He also forces you to go to events and volunteer filing taxes, but those are extremely beneficial experiences many wouldn't do if optional.
Very tough class. Professor has no patience to answer students' questions. Lots of materials. He made students very stressful in the class.
This class is an absolute grind. The exams are nearly impossible. Average on the first exam was a 60% after the curve. The second exam average was a 45% after the curve. The third exam and final exam were similar in grades. Ton of homework and other mandatory out of class events. Unless you love accounting, I highly advise rethinking your major.
The best college teacher I've ever had. Second best teacher ever (only to my fourth grade teacher). He really cares about the students. Really, he recalls students situations and incorporates their stories into tax. Always has a story for tax, which makes it fun and can come to life.
Bury students with tons of homework without enough guidance and explanation. He has no sense of fairness! Only care about himself. Make students suffering as if the course is not already hard enough. Lots of ridiculous and tedious rules. No sympathy for others.
Great Prof. but hard. Learned tons. Super engaging.
If you want to learn tax, take it with Professor Platau! If you go to UT, he currently is the only professor to teach the subject -- unfortunately you don't have a choice. All exams are open book and students will fail. It's the subject, not the professor. Platau makes tax about as fun as it gets. If you get offended easily, brace yourself!
he is a great person, teaching a terrible subject.
Dr. Platau is a great professor who is subsequently teaching a ridiculously difficult course. However, I would certainly love to take a class with him again and he is certainly well versed in the topic of taxation.
Class is extremely difficult. Platau is a great professor who knows the subject extremely well, but is an extremely difficult grader. Be prepared to work extremely hard to get a solid grade. Use the book each class
Dr. Platau's class was difficult but was extremely rewarding. He is easy to pay attention to in lectures and is always extremely prepared. The workload was the most of any class I've ever taken but if you prepare yourself to spend a lot of time on his work you should not have a problem. His assignments will take time but are not impossible.
TAX SUCKS! I loved intermediate accounting but tax is the death of me. So much work. Stay on top of it. I let it slide so now Im so behind and since I hate tax I have 0 motivation. Hoping for a C. But Platau is awesome. He has the most random stories but it keeps you interested the whole 4 hours of class. Try to take it 2 days a week rather than 1.
I found his teaching style to just not work for me. He seemed to skim over the powerpoints and assume you understand what youre doing for the homework. Times where Ive tried to ask for help, he gave a well that sucks kindof response. I wished there was another professor that teaches this class.
Go to his office hours!!!!!!!!!!! the only way to improve in acc.
Most work I ever had to do for a class, but nothing is busy work. Every assignment taught me something and I am walking out of the class feeling like I know the tax code. He makes lectures super interesting and interactive. Only complaint is no sympathy for grades. He will take off points just for his grammar suggestions. Exams can be impossible.
If I took the class with no professor, I'd've gotten the same grade. Homework problems are due before class discussions, but when I asked him for extra practice he told me there was no way to do that. Students on Zoom told him we couldn't see the board and he said "I can't control technology" and refused to try to clarify the material.
Why is this class harder than a level 400 class? is it the professor or the subject? Wish there were other professors...
Really hard class!
I have never been more frustrated with any other teacher in my life. If you want a good grade in this class be prepared to spend at least 40 hours on exams for A's. Platau also gives you extremely hard homework before he even teaches the subject. Homework can take up to 5 hours each week because you need to teach yourself the subject to complete it
This is the worst class I have ever taken and he is the worst professor. Never take him and if you do I am sorry. He gives an insane amount of homework on material he does the worst job teaching. If you want to sit there for 4 hours listening to his lectures that make no sense then take this class. He's very rude in office hours as well.
Get ready to WORK if you're taking ACC 352 with Platau. Taxation is by far the hardest class there is for accounting students and you will not be able to slack AT ALL in this class. If you don't plan on taking it seriously and putting in the work than I would postpone taking the class because you WILL fail. Platau is a good prof. just tough class.
Prof. Platau is a very interesting man with a lot of funny stories but this class is the hardest class i've ever taken in my life. There are so much projects to complete and if it is handed in 1 second late, Platau will not accept. The tests are nearly impossible even if you study for them. You must devote nearly 30 hours a week to this class
You really need to dedicate yourself to this class to be successful. I really enjoyed Platau's lecturing style. If you are not constantly working on this class then you're doing something wrong.
Prof. Platau is a good guy and knows how to keep the class interesting. He has a lot of stories that will keep you engaged the whole time, but if you are taking tax with him, it's going to be a nightmare that you will never want to experience again in life. ACC 352 is unexplainably difficult and requires you to work super hard just to pass.
I literally wanted to drive off a bridge and crash anytime I was going to his class. Worst professor I have ever taken.
Took tax with professor Platau last fall and it was one of the worst experiences of my life that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. I visited him during his office hours weekly and he didn't even know that I was one of his students at the end of the semester. Also, this class has requirements that you must fulfill in the spring semester so be ready
Fun Prof! Kept us engaged even though it's hard material. He helped me learn a lot. Go to office hours, he's willing to help. Cares a lot. Witty, Funny, well knowledged. Tests can be multiple choice or solving problems. You NEED BA Calculator.
If you are willing to put in the work, take him. Office hours are great, will learn a lot.
this is a super hard class, but its so important to go to office hours for this class, i would go constantly and once professor platau knew my face it helped me so much in that class, if you go in to discuss excel sheets that you didn't do great on and you show a general understanding, HE WILL GIVE YOU POINTS BACK, would definitely take again
Very hard professor a lot of work he goes through the lecture super fast go to his office hours to pass this class
Platau can be lighthearted and sometimes funny during lectures. However, he talks as if you eat, sleep, and breathe accounting everyday, and the work in this course is brutally difficult and time consuming. He expects near perfection and is not very flexible with grading. Make sure you have easy classes to keep you sane if you plan on taking him.
The exams are difficult but he curves them. Assignments are interesting & made for a reason. Very charismatic in class - makes you want to show up. Prepare early for Rebecca project and write down all the hw problems. Genuinely wants you to learn and succeed. Hard class, a lot of work, but is a great professor. Do 2 day class instead of just 1.
Professor Platau is a fun instructor. I took his ACC 202 class in Spring, the class was at 8 am but he made it really enjoyable to learn, and kept the class engaged with stories. Doing homework and reviewing lessons will prepare you for the exams.
Great professor, would take again.
Best professor I have ever had. Has funny real world stories to reinforce tax concepts. This class will test if you got what it take to be an accounting major! I am actually happy so many people drop or get bad grades. Makes an A that much sweeter. You will work hard but it will pay off! Good luck!
Very stressful class, a lot of work. Start your projects early. He makes class very understandable and gives his insight but it is a lot of work. Exams were not that bad as long as you went to class and did the HW. Highly recommend taking easy classes to offset the difficulty of this class.
Very knowledgeable about the subject, you will learn a lot. Hardest class I've ever taken though. Lots of graded things but the final project at the end takes days and days of work. Start that weeks early and you'll finish on time. Tests aren't crazy hard and but its not a huge part of the grade. If you're taking this class be prepared.
Was probably the most difficult course I've taken in my life, but I love Dr. Platau. You have to put the work in for this class because although a decent portion of your grade is easy assignments, tests and writing assignments make up most of the grade. Start Rebecca when he tells you to and tests weren't too bad if you practiced Gleim and Cengage
Unless you live and breath by the tax code, you will find this class difficult. The most work I've had out of any class. Make sure you read the 35 page syllabus to yourself every night before you sleep because Platau treats it like his baby. Class averages on exams were around 70%. Professor is a nice guy but makes his class insanely difficult.
Since he is the only professor offered for this class this review feels pretty useless. He is such a nice man and cares so much about tax, but the class is way too much work. I'm doing terrible in my other classes because I'm putting at least 30 hours a week into this class. Be prepared to devote your life to tax law. Kiss your social life goodbye
He is a great professor who cares about his students. The students who don't like him are just not used to actually putting in the effort. Make sure to participate and attend his office hours, he's a great guy.
Worst class of ever. Plateaus teaching style is horrific. Hurricane Milton and Helene came, yet he refused to extend deadlines for Cengage homework. There's no extra credit, and even students with jobs are required to attend internship fairs. The average score for the first test was around 45, and he blamed us for not studying. Horrible class
Worst teacher there is. Unfortunately he is the only tax professor so I'm sorry in advance. Prepare to have a teacher that doesn't care for his students success. Crazy about phones so don't touch them. Dedicated at least 40 hours a week to this course. No useful feedback at all so your gonna need to practically teach yourself.
He says he's preparing you for the real world - unless ur intending on getting paid 30k a year to prepare individuals taxes there isn't many take aways. There could be much more improvement to this course. I wish he taught us more on tax systems and excel and utilizing AI because news flash it isn't the 2000s anymore.
If you need a visual aid and have a hard time understanding financial management, this professor is NOT for you. He had the homework's due before class (which are extremely hard even after reading the textbook), then we would cover them during class. Only take him if you have already have firm understanding of financial accounting.
ACC352 with Professor Platau is a challenging but rewarding course. While the workload is heavy, his engaging lectures and helpful office hours make it worthwhile. Unstuck study was a game-changer for my exam prep.
If you're lazy or don't care about school don't take him, but if you like to learn just read the textbook and you'll get an A. Its really rewarding class. If you're in the business school, he can set you up with great connections/possible internships. He is just a sweet old guy who loves accounting. This was me and my friend's favorite class.
HE DOES NOT TELL YOU YOUR GRADE UNTIL THE END OF SEMESTER. You do homework before class and then we go over answers during. The homework takes hours because you're basically teaching yourself. Unless you like all of these things I would not recommend.
Told me a future job wouldn't like me because I ask too many questions which happened DURING office hours. Instructions for assignments are unclear but harshly graded. Uses a whiteboard during lectures, but it becomes very hard to read with explanations rushed/confusing The Canvas page is messy and hard to navigate. Goes off topic during lectures
Homeworks are assigned before you learn it which are usually really hard, you wont know your grade in the class until the very end, lectures tend to be very confusing, and he is also rude in office hours.
Great professor
I struggled with accounting so naturally I went to his office hours where he got frustrated and told me that I should drop his class. I refused to listen to his "advice," which no professor should ever give, but I was shattered and could not ask for help in other modules. I dropped his class and re-took it in another semester and passed with an 86.
Professor Platau is a very nice guy and is very knowledgable. His classes are lecture heavy which can get a little boring and not super helpful. There is lots of homework/assignments but if you do them you will do well in the class. His syllabus and information is very confusing and A LOT but in the end it helps.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY FOR TAX!!!!! The guy has no clear expectations on writing assignments. The exams are harder than any review material. Attendance is mandatory, how
Literally worst professor, his classes are 2 hours of anxiety. He makes you think that the class is impossible to pass but in the end you'll be fine. If you want to learn take him but it will cost you some sanity.
AWFUL TAX PROF!!!! This boomer has no clear expectations on assignments, expects students to dig through a 50 page syllabus to find any info. Doesn't actually teach, class is him calling on students to redo EXACT homework probs and then he tells a few life stories. The guy likes to hear himself talk. Takes great pride in having a hard class.
ive been a straight A student all my life. this is THE hardest class i've ever taken. platau is not a good prof. he j goes over the hw the entire class. hw of a chapter he never taught in the first place. projects are HARD but u learn more from them than from lectures. do ur best in assignments and hw (it will save ur grade) bc exams are IMPOSSIBLE
You teach urself by reading the textbook. lectures are pointless. you learn from the projects but even then they don't have a clear grading criteria and he grades them however he feels like it. Doesn't give feedback at all and he acts like everyone has prior knowledge in tax. take easy classes with this one because this is a full-time job.
