Rediculous teacher...kills you on stupid details

He Hated me .... never taught us how to write
He sucks
this guy is hard as nails. all he did was whup my ass when I asked for help
He expects a lot from his students, but does take the time to get to know everyone. I'd suggest going to the writing lab before you ask him for help..and he tends to suggest that too, or else be prepared for a lot of red ink.
hes pretty tough, expects too much

impossible to get a good grade
Never understood what was asking for because he never told you what he really wanted you to do. He's a total ****.
It is impossible to get a good grade. If you get a B, congradulations, i think you're a first. he is an unfair grader. I went to the writing center when he worked and had him look at my paper, made all the changes he told me to do and still go a C. I spent way too much time on his papers. If you have him, get out now!!!!!!
he sucks...and he wants you to fail at life...stay away.. far away...
Impossible to a get above a C- on anything!!! He treats you like you are an employee of a Rocket science nasa program or something......Nice guy but a lil out of touch with reality
This man is the devil trapped in human form. It is currently 2:42am the day before this final paper and I want to gouge my eyes out. If I could give some advice to future students I would recommend dropping at the soonest possible moment and save yourself some time before drop day or prepare to spend 8 hours writing papers to get a C-.I despise him
what can i say about rand....those of you who hate him so much should be lucky that you didn't have to endure his class five days a week for six weeks for an hour and a half each day....YOU SHOULD FEEL SOMEWHAT LUCKY!
I think he is a great guy to just talk about music, and fun stuff outside of school, but he never answers questions you have, and gives like a couple B's in the class the rest... you know...
IMPOSSILE! If it is still possible to drop this class... DO IT!! It is not possible to get above a C. And to just get a C you have to work your butt off!
He was a very unfair teacher... i suggest NOT taking him!
horrible teacher, i had to transfer out of state i hated this guy so much
No Comments
I suggest never taking him...i read the comments on here but figured it wouldnt be so bad so stayed in...wrong move...trust me..get out of the class ASAP...his instructions were never clear and he made you write the paper then changed his assignment my advice for the writers group is to just write a bunch of crap because you'll rewrite it anyway
I should have read these comments before I took this class. This was by far the worse teacher I have had! He makes you feel dumb and expects way to much for a 100 level class. Worked my butt off to get a B in the course! If you can, please switch to another teacher, you will be thankful you did!! He expects everyone is an English Major!
This was by far the best learning experience I have had at UND. He is a hard grader but he helps by marking your papers with serious suggestions. I feel that many mistake his marks for personal attacks when he is only trying to bring the best out in his students. My writing skills have improved a hundred fold. I would recommend him to anyone.
I took 125 because I heard it was easier than 120 unless you get a certain professor. Well this is that professor. He's a nice guy but expects perfection and is out of touch with reality. The class is boring and hard, and the book is expensive. First paper was 3-4 pages, last will be 15 with each in between getting larger. Would NOT recommend him.
I am currently in this class. I took this, because I was told it was supposed to be easier than 120. I regret staying in this class with Rand as my Professor. He is nice and pretty smart, but his grading is ridiculous. He is the hardest grader I have ever encountered.DONT take him, if you are taking this class as a general basically. LISTEN.
This is the hardest 100 level class ever. It doesn't matter if you dedicate your life to this class, you still won't get an A! Take it a another semester or with a different professor. His directions are unclear. He goes against everything the book says, but tells you to use the book. He's confusing, a hard grader, and a different guy. STAY AWAY!!
Stevevn Rand was the absolute worst professor i have ever had. He's without a doubt the hardest teacher you can take for any english classes. He grades extremely hard, and not at the level of a 100 class. Also Steven Rand is the biggest "Creeper" he makes everyone around him feel extremely uncomfortable.
Hey be nice. Yeah, he's hard to understand, and a very harsh grader, but he's a teacher and at least he's doing his job (of course, everyone including me would love easier, more comprehendable classes) just be greatful he's willing to put up with everyone's bull hoping that he helped at least one student improve in literature.
I struggled through his class. First- he's a lawyer, so he'll lead you on making you think one thing without actually promising anything. Second- he'll give you about 20 different instructions on one paper and he'll grade it by how he's feeling. Stupid class, I worked so hard and managed a B but he told me that I had "weak writing." Avoid him!
Steven rand just a joke!! and so incrediablely socially awkward! do not take this class unless you like to fail out of college! He gives you directions for a paper but grades on whatever is on his mind that day his grading makes no sense and no one has ever gotten an A in one of his classes yet.... if you dont believe me he will tell you this.
His expectations are high for a required 100-level class, especially since most who take it aren't English majors. To his credit, he's smart and gives good feedback. I wouldn't recommend him to a freshman.
For as much of a waste as UNIV 101 is, he did an ok job at keeping things interesting. Avoid UNIV 101 altogether if you can.
worst experience of my life. expects way too much for a 100 level course. take this class if you want to spend 15 hours on a three page paper and still get a C-. ridiculous grading policies.
Worst teacher I have had at UND. Sorry I don't have a PhD in English. His grading style is way too rough for a 125 class. nobody in my class has an A. I have put in 3x more hours for this class than any other but still this class is my worst grade. If possible, avoid this teacher!
He is confusing in every aspect: in lecture, in assignments and in critiquing. His assignments are mundane and never change. I expected to explore writing and become better. He is an impossible grader, espcially because he grades on how HE feels about your ideas, not on grammer or content. VERY DISAPPOINTING.
He is a unruly professor. He grades on how he feels your ideas are. There is never a right answer, papers can ALWAYS use improvement. I would not recommend him to anyone wanting a grade over a C, even to get that you must put in an excessive amount of time into each paper.
This was a tough class. I expected all college classes to be like this, but since most are not it was somewhat refreshing to have a professor push me this much. If you are willing to put in the work for Mr. Rand you will reep the benefits. If not, then take this class from someone else.
Not good.
I wish I could give him a zero
Awful. Horrible grading.
He is terrible! If you have him drop him IMMEDIATELY! He is mean, and an extremely hard grader!!!!
Professor Steven Rand is very unclear and grades very hard. If you are in his English classes, drop if you want something less than a C. He hates that "students were graded too easy in high school" so in response to that, he likes to fail his students.
He was a very hard grader, but he graded on improvement throughout the semester, not on how great of a greater you were (I mean he obviously graded on how good of a writer you were, but it was more on how much you progressed). I learned a lot from him. I am even taking me next english class with him. Definitely take his course if you can!
I attend his Business and Technical Writing course. Rand humiliates people for not understanding assignments when they ask. Very egotistical, rude to those who need help, very difficult work, hard grader -even on those who are following directions. I highly recommend waiting to take this class from anyone else. Not worth losing points on your GPA.
Worst professor ever. He asked me personal questions that were uncomfortable, made me feel stupid when I asked questions, and overall discouraged me. Do not take english 125 from him.
Horrible professor. He does not believe in A's. Thinks that other teachers grade too easily. Answers your questions with other questions that do not help you. Teaches you irrelevant material that you will never use again. Worst professor I have ever had.
This class is so pointless its ridiculous. I'm in the class currently (only because its required.) The class has no relevance to anything in life. Rand is a ****, the class is so boring. He could make the class so much better by writing papers that actually have meaning to them instead of what some philosopher said. Textbook reading is hard!!
one of the worst professors at UND. Extremely hard grader and expects to much in a 100 level class. Thinks that everyone's papers should be masterpieces. No matter how long i spent on a paper i couldnt get higher than a C. Only reason i got a B in the class was because i never missed a class.
He will only give your paper a C. It does not matter if it is good or not. Work extremely hard if you plan on passing.
Bottom line Rand needs to retire before he ruins everyone's GPA's. He thinks he knows so much about English and thinks it is his job to make essay assignments unneeded riddles. He answers questions with questions and likes to talk trash about high school English teachers; hating on the high school teachers ironically makes it like high school. FR
Do not take English 110 with Rand. I don't feel any better at writing due to his confusing grading style.
Tough grader on papers make sure you do your work and drafts. Participation grades save you in the long run. Dont miss class and do your work. Go to the tutor center helps alot
He graded a 100 level class like we were all English majors in a 300 or above level class. Never got higher than a C on a paper. I went to the writing center for every paper. Very unclear in instructions and hard to approach with questions. Don't take the class from him.
Hard class
Steven Rand is a nice person and really interesting to hear him speak. I am always inspired after a lecture. However, never expect to get anything higher than a C. You can think your paper is perfect but, he will tear it apart in seconds. Take a different professor if you don't want to put 9 hours of work into a paper you get an "average" grade on.
I recently just finished taking Comp 110 with Rand and it was the hardest class of my freshman semester. He takes it way too serious for a 100 level class. 80% of the class is papers so you would think you control the grade you get, right? Wrong. He will tear apart your paper and give you a bad grade despite your efforts. I worked hard for a C.
I thought his class was extremely hard but despite it all, I became a confident writer. People on here say "you can only get a c on a paper" WRONG. I got an A and a B. You just have to be in it to win it. If you want to get an A, get a different teacher. If you want learn, Go for Rand. He made Eng. 110 worth something.
He has a major in philosophy which is why all the papers you have to write are based on philosophy. As long as your paper agrees with what he thinks you will get a good grade. Otherwise the class is boring and he talks for an hour about nonsense but it is mandatory to attend otherwise your grade will drop.
He is brilliant in his field, but expects his students to perform at high levels, with unrealistic expectations. Only by a miracle did I get an A, and that was after a heavy curve. He does care about his students though, as he gives lots of time in class for work, while he goes around giving tips and answering questions.
Rand was a good guy, really... he was. But I felt he had an alter-ego when he left to go home and grade. His expectations and how he picked apart his students papers was simply not fair. Again, great guy but avoid this class with him!!!
Comes off as a nice guy but if he doesn't like your paper you are not gonna get a good grade even if it meets all criteria. Rewords grammatically correct sentences so they sound good to him.
Expects way too much.
Steven expects a lot from the student, which seemed overwhelming at times for a 100-level course. I consider myself a strong writer, but I never got anything higher than a B on a paper. He is accessible all the time though and gives his students his home phone number. He truly cares about his students and his a pretty cool guy.
He is an extremely tough grader. Every paper I would find that he tore the tiniest things apart in each paper. He does give good feedback, but only when you turn in the final draft of a paper (even though you meet with him prior to turning it in). He only likes you if you if you have the same writing style as he does, and isn't open to others.
Steven was a nice guy, but he graded much harder than he needed to. If you tried in the class, he wanted you to succeed. Steven offered many opportunities for help on papers. More importantly, he made people significantly better writers.
this class is damn chaos. could barely measle out a C despite working 12 hours per page on my papers. AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS
unprepared, sloppy
Steven Rand really cares about you as a person, however your grade is a different story. He gives bad grades to everyone even if you spend 20 hours + working on a paper. If you want a good chance to do well in this class avoid taking it with Rand.
This class with this teacher was the dullest and most overexaggerated 110 class you will ever take. This didn't have to be the case but pair a decent amount of work with a teacher that expects the students in class intend to major in writing like Jesus himself. This class is doable, but avoid Steven Rand like your life depends on it.
Mr. Rand's class was relatively easy. There was 4 essays due over the course of the semester, all based off the same subject. Each time we had class there was a typed draft due and then your peer's give you feedback on them and on the day that final papers were due he gave us the whole class period to edit them with a partner before turning it in.
Extremely hard grader. Spent 12+ hours on his papers and it didn't seem to make a difference. He told me my papers and writing were becoming better, but my grades were decreasing. If your looking to get good grades in college avoid his classes. All we did for an entire semester is to write four papers on the same topic, super boring.
Had Steven for 110 and by all means felt like a 400 level class. He adjusts your papers to his likings and is often left-minded which isn't good for a right minded opinion. Cool guy outside of class, but overall not a good experience for english. Not a whole ton of work but grades so hard you're constantly trying to make better. Don't recommend.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Not because the content was hard but the teacher is impossible to please. I'll give him credit for always wanting to improve your writing but its ridiculous how far he will go into your paper. You will hear the words "Extraneous material" about 50 times throughout the semester. If you can avoid this teacher, do it....
Steven rand is by far the worst teacher I have ever encountered. His grading criteria are vague and unclear at best. His class provides no academic value besides a subpar grade on your transcript. His grading style is harsh and very opinionated. He fails his students by his unrealistic paper expectations and acts surprised when they aren't met.
He Has very strong opinions on how to write and docs points if you dont Write his specific way.
If I'm going to be honest, I didn't believe a word of what these reviews had. Until I experience the first month with this man, I believed everything. Something that I hated was that he made me feel like a terrible writer and downgraded me. Take this class, but for your sanity, with a different professor.
I just finished up this class for the semester, easily the worst class I've ever taken. Ridiculously hard grading for a 100 level course. Expect to put in countless hours on your papers, only to get completely torn apart the second he reads one sentence. If you do not agree with all of his personal views, expect no higher than a C. Awful.
As other reviewer's have said, steer clear of Steven Rand at all costs. A very nice guy, but treats the class like a 400 level class. Expects all of us to be writing God's. He is a very bias grader, so if you go against his opinions do not expect a good grade.
He grades as if we were English majors and not just taking this for our English credit. You also have to be prepared to spend more on this class than any other and still not get a good grade.
Avoid Steven Rand's class like the plague. He is unnecessarily difficult for a 100 level class. You'd learn more about english if you were in a coma on Mars.
He is an exceptionally harsh teacher, and hes an awful person as well.
This class was a waste of time. The only way you would get above a 70% on a paper is if you were buddy-buddy with Rand. He favors kids that cause the most problems but put on a good poker face. The papers are useless and you will learn nothing. He doesn't teach, you have to teach yourself out of the TSIS book. Many complaints were sent to the dean.
Time in class is useless. His teachings are unoriginal as he relies heavily on the textbooks for information. You will read chapters and then he will restate the information you already covered. He believes his writing is perfect and that yours must match it. If you have him, use his feedback and apply it to your next papers.
Avoid his class like the plague. He grades as if you were supposed to be an absolutely perfect writer. He even said himself that he's a perfect writer, and that he makes absolutely zero mistakes.
This guy is the worst professor I have ever had. Over 5 10+ page papers for entry level class. Does not care about his students. Does not post anything on blackboard, which makes you go to the lectures where you will learn nothing about english.
I struggle with getting my point across and was planning on trying my best to improve. Not only did I receive 3 straight D's - he also tore apart my papers over the smallest mistakes and gave no constructive feedback. I dropped the class and learned later that he had to give a flat 5% extra credit to all students' papers by the dean.
Impossible to please. By far the worst professor I've ever had. He is completely incapable of answering any question meaningfully and to top it off he leaves you with more questions than he answered.
I would and will be taking my next english class with him. He gets a lot of negative reviews for his tough grading, but he gives a rubric that if you follow you will do well. The content and work is hard but is the same for every english class. Going to the writing center and office hours will result in easier grading on papers for "effort put in".
Legit watched one of my classmates cry in front of him because they were so stressed over his class. He grades stupidly hard. If you get on his good side and are somewhat decent at writing, congrats on a C overall.
He occasionally would contradict the textbook. If you went in during his office hours for questions, there's a high chance you come leave with more questions and your original ones never answered. He gives a lot of feedback but all most all of it is not helpful. I would NEVER take a class from him again.
I have never had a professor that loves to make their students feel dumb in the way Rand does.
I struggle with English classes but I tried the best I ever had in his class but still received the worst grade Ive ever gotten. I spent more time on his class then any other and still revived Ds on papers I considered the best papers Ive ever written. When it comes to missing class do not expect him to tell you what you missed even if you ask.
So hard to please and get good grades, no mater how hard I tried I couldn't do well. Expects a lot from students
All I can say is you should be seeing a trend if you read his reviews. I'll be honest, I thought NO WAY! This is a basic first year class WRONG!! Be prepared to spend 12-18 hours on papers and still receive a terrible grade, treated as a level 400. There are only 4 or 5 papers all of similar context. Wish I had a do over! RUN!!!!!
Saw all the bad ratings here and decided to take my chances. This man is so boring, here's 10 pages of reading after each class. Gave me a 50% on an assignment he said it was "much to long", and it was the minimum length he set, he's impossible. Cut your losses and take with someone else at all costs! Also, straight A English student before him so.
Never hated a single person more in my life. Grades tough, gave horrible feedback and doesn't care for students. Had lots of excused absences due to surgery I had for an injury. Asked for what I missed and he somehow made me feel like an idiot for missing classes even though it was outside of my control and I didn't even bother to help me.
The hardest grader I have ever met. Genuinely thinks that if to give you an A is gods gift to the earth. Openly insults you in class. Requires attendance yet refuses to teach you anything. Avoid at all costs.
Do not take English 130 From Mr. Rand. His lectures are beyond boring and the papers are horrible. You will spend over 12 hours a paper and then will barely receive a C at best. He does not care about his students at all. Do not take 130 from Rand at all cost.
I took this class last semester and I can positively say he is the worst professor I have ever had. The lectures will take up the whole hour and fifteen minute class and it is very boring. Also spending countless hours on papers just for him to say its not good enough and give you a C,D, or F STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR.
AVOID THIS MAN LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! Lectures were useless and ranting that never actually helped. He thinks he's the best thing to happen to the world and grades as if he expects perfection. His instructions are insanely vague and the amount of work you have to do for a 100s level class is honestly laughable. He was expecting 10 page papers.
Just don't. Save yourself. Avoid him as much as humanly possible. If you like stress and not having time to do anything other than read pointless textbooks that teach you high school common sense and write papers that will take you on average 20 hours in which you'll only get a D at best, then take him. Otherwise save yourself and sanity.
Absolutely terrible professor, and maybe the worst on campus. There is no chance of you obtaining an A or really learning anything. You spend countless hours on a paper just for him to give you a C at best. Not worth the time effort or money. The university needs to step in and fire him. Wait to take English or find another professor.
Absolutely do not take a class with this Man, Ive been In advanced LA through the entirety of middle and highschool and am by no stretch a bad writer, My highest paper grade was a 76% as was the rest of my peers. He Is an incredibly tough grader and will nitpick anything he can possibly find wrong In the paper. he also gives unclear and vague outli
He is a nice person but is very hard to please. He often left me feeling stupid when asking questions about my papers. lowest grade I got was a 78 and highest was a 90. If you put the work in you should be fine. Overall he's ok just don't have hopes with getting an A.
Steven is a nice guy but his class is tough. He is a very harsh grader but, he wants you to come out a better writer than you were at the beginning of the course. His assignment expectations are laid out clearly, if you listen to his feedback, attend his office hours and use the writing center to your advantage you should be ok.
AVOID AT ALL COST. Probably the worst teacher I've had ever. He's egotistical, narcissistic, and thinks he is gods gift to earth. His lectures are useless and he often alters assignments to what he believes they should be. When he gives you advice it usually is worthless.
He is absolutely Terrible, never take him!!!! you will spend hours on papers just to get a C or D, and then get corrected on the tiniest of mistakes. Only way to do well is to use the writing center to get extra point for "effort".
This class was very difficult. Rand grades based on if your writing and ideas match his. If they don't match his style, prepare to get a lot of 75%. If you ask questions he'll give you dirty looks and say "As I stated in the lecture.." The only reason I got a B was because I participated in lectures, so if you have to take the class, talk a lot.
Do not take his class. If you are a 4.0 GPA student, that will be ruined. There is no chance of getting high grades on papers. His lectures are pointless. He puts students in groups to review papers and expects everyone to take note the ENTIRE time someone is reading it. No one ever does, and you just have to pretend to be doing to when he walks by
Professor Rand grades tough and you will lose participation points if you do not have things in on time/do not meet the page requirements. He truly does care about his students and only wants them to learn. If you actually go to class, ask questions, and participate you will get an A or B, but it won't be easy.
Pick any other english teacher if you can.
Never take his class. Avoid at all costs. This isn't one of those teachers that has bad reviews but is not all that bad... he IS that bad.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. If you are an honors student DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, or you will not be one anymore. Grades unbelievably hard and doesn't offer much help. Instead, he gets mad and aggressive about how there was plenty of instructions available. One time he made a girl in our class cry.
Thank god this man retired
Professor Rand has high expectations, but using resources like Unstuck AI and the writing center can help navigate his tough grading. Attend class and apply his feedback to improve as a writer.
Worst class and professor I have ever had in my life. I genuinely believe the only reason UND kept this guy around was to make money off everyone who failed his class and had to retake it. Any positive review on here was probably made by him. Glad he finally retired.
