Lets just say that at mid-terms I think over 1/2 of the class was failing.
He is the hardest professor I've ever had! Unfortunately I have to take him again for another class! We started the semester with roughly 70-75. By finals, there were maybe 30 of us left! I studied my rear off for his tests, but they were impossible!
The class is boring. He is boring. I played computer games most of the class. 1440 is supposed to be hard, but I thought it would be entertaining...it's not. I haven't heard any good profs...Take someone besides Runge though!

Don't take Runge! Although Moran is hard, I would take him because you know what to expect. Runge had an easy first two tests, then got mad at us and took revenge on the next two tests. His final was out of left field and no one passed it.
Starting out there were about 60 of us and by mid-term half the class had dropped the class. All his tests are hard and he's not very clear on his points he makes. Very hard instructor. I had a D.
Hard class...tests were the only grades for lecture. I struggled with about a C average for the whole semester until the final which was so easy! I ended up pulling a B. If you take him just stick with it and read the book!
a lot of people in the class did bad, i made a b, but had to study my butt off. tests were kinda hard

i just cant learn things from the way he teaches
this is a hard class. most of your class will drop out. Runge is a good teacher, but his tests are insane, and they are the only grades. You have to read the book becuase the lectures won't help on there own. I would only recomend this class if you have a good background in Biology
His class is very hard and he wasn't very helpful at all. He doesn't answer questions well, but instead beats around the bush. His tests are very hard and not much of what's on the test comes from the book.
This was my worst class, and I have not had trouble at all in college until his class. He does not explain anything very well. He is fully monotoned all the time. Nothing that you take notes on will be on the test. It all comes from the book. Only grades are tests, and they are KILLERS!
OK so hes not gonna give you an easy A. But I don't go to college for an easy A. I go to college to get a good education and Mr. Runge teaches Biology so that you might have to apply yourself a little bit. I'm sure he'd help if you had a question
Dr. Runge is good at lecture, but the tests often require intuituve knowledge and other aspects not covered in class (or covered without the relevance being made clear). DO NOT take this course unless you are already well-versed in Chemistry!!! If you DO take this course, plan to live in the tutoring lab and ask questions about everything!
Dr. Runge is a really good teacher. He uses visual aides and explains everything very thoroughly. He is very willing to give help outside of class. His tests are pretty hard, though, so take copious notes and study them well. Aside from a few bonus questions, all of the test material is directly from lecture. I never took the plastic off my book.
His class was extremely hard. He taught as though the whole class had already taken organic chemistry and he expected you to know things on the test that were never covered in class. He's a nice guy, but I would not recommend his class.
I took Dr. Runge for both Cell and Exp Molecular Bio. Both were tough but truly *exceptional*. Don't memorize facts, study mechanisms and concepts. You will learn thing for future classes without realizing. DO NOT NEGLECT LAB. Dr. Runge is the best professor I've ever taken.
good teacher : )
This class may beboring at timss but i love it.
Dr. Runge is nice, but his class is very difficult. I had to teach myself everything that I learned in his class by rereading the chapters and taking my own notes. He's an ok teacher, but just ok... You only have three tests and a final, plus lab work, but you get to drop your lowest test.
Extremely hard! Test are the ONLY grades. You must read every inch the book & understand everything you read. Lectures are pointless unless you already know biology. He teaches as if everyone knows the same things he does. DO NOT TAKE unless you KNOW biology already.
Hardest teacher ever! He seems to be way too smart to teach. He assumes his students know just as much as he does. All tests are comprehensive.. so they are extremely difficult. Lecture doesn't help and attendance doesn't count, but he takes role. He covers maybe a 1/3 of what is actually on the test. If you can, take someone else!
Really hard professor. DO NOT take him unless you already understand biology! tests are the only grades and maybe 1 or 2 lab reports. must understand the concepts, not just reading over your notes. you have to know how to apply what you've learned.
Very monotone. Lecture HEAVY. Read class notes OFTEN like every night or you wont be prepared for your next lecture. Tests are HARD and you HAVE to apply your knowledge, its not straight from notes. extremely intelligent and teaches on his level. read before class so you can ask questions. if you arent good AT bio & chem, DONT TAKE HIM.
Dr. Runge is not a good professor. He's a nice person but I don't recommend him for this class. It's a lot of material to cover and he does not do a good job of helping his students understand the material. His tests are nothing like his lectures, if you do decide to take him for this class read the book and practice on mastering biology.
He is NOT good at explaining things in ways students can understand. He makes his tests super difficult but drops the lowest grade out of four exams. Not many grade opportunities other than in lab. He is too smart to be teaching basic level BIO I and it shows. Get ready to read your textbook so you can understand the concepts he teaches.
I'll preface with if you're NOT a bio major, I don't recommend him. However, if you are, he is a great professor. You actually learn in his class, and while you have to work a little to get an A, the class teaches you how to study and understand concepts rather than memorize info. Really nice guy too, just do your reading for class & pay attention
Dr. Runge is a very tough professor. He makes up 90 percent of the test questions himself and each answer sounds just as right as the other. I had him for a lab section too and he was very picky in how he decided to grade and he graded very harshly. I would not recommend him for intro to biology:-( seems to be more at a grad student level.
bonus on tests up to 14 pts and will meet with you outside of office hours to go over your tests and help you, but you MUST teach yourself the material; there is too much to cover so he only goes over it. tests/final comes from class notes, he drops lowest test grade; GREAT prof ONLY if you're a bio major
Dr. Runge is a nice professor and tries to make biology understandable with the limited time available. It is helpful to read the book and do research outside of class, since the only grade school really tests and a few small lab grades. If you need help with the content, he is more than willing to help! If you are a biology major, take his class!
Dr. Runge was amazing! Bonus points if you attend SI sessions and up to 10 bonus on all exams! He likes to do hands on activities to help you understand biology better. He also is very passionate about biology, so he has the answer to every question you have and throws in fun facts about the subject here and there.
Just don't. Literally the hardest class I have taken, just take another professor. His test are extremely hard, he doesn't give a lot of homework so all you depend on is your quiz and test grades which sucks.
Very intelligent professor, flies through the content. If you're not very strong in Biology I wouldn't take him. Lab attendance is mandatory or you'll be behind for weeks. Has SI sessions but they were useless, got extra credit for them though. Overall very difficult and has a lot of drops.
If you are not a Biology major DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. One of the hardest classes by far. If you are not interested in Biology or aren't strong in the field, then this class will be the death of you. He lectures the full time and sometimes goes over the class period. Tests are extremely difficult and that's the majority of your grade.
Test are very hard and comprehensive. Make sure you read your book. Do your lab work and study for your lab quizzes. Would not take unless you have a strong background in biology.
I have heard from a lot of people that taking Runge is not smart. This was my first semester of college, so I figured his teaching was normal. I studied sooooooo hard for the tests, and passed with an A ONLY because I tried really hard for it. It is very difficult, but doable if you are determined enough.
barely managed an A bc of all the extra credit quizzes and attending SI sessions. I basically learned the material from reading the book extensively, and he expects you to learn extra test material from the book; so my test grades were good but lab was hard for me: lab report, and mini quizzes every week from previous labs were challenging.
He is nice and sometimes funny. Tests are VERY hard. His lectures are just the outer layer of what you have to read in the book for the exam. SI sessions are pointless and only 1 point extra credit. Do not take him unless you're ready to work hard everyday.
Literally the sweetest guy ever!!! After reading this page, I was a little nervous about taking his class, but it was unnecessary. He was so understanding and encouraging throughout the whole online, remote learning concept - especially b/c I took the summer course, so we were basically guinea pigs. Stay on track and communicate with him!
Nice guy, but his lectures are almost nothing like the tests. I watched/took very detailed notes on every single lecture and read from the book, but still never received higher than a C on a test. He makes his own questions and sometimes the questions on a test arent learned until the next chapter. SI sessions do not help at all
This is not a class that is just about memorizing, you need to have a deep understanding of the material. Make sure to read as well it helps, but you will still need to put in outside work of that. He has high expectations of what you should gain from lectures, and has very demanding tests.
While I understand every professor had to adjust their teaching style because of the pandemic, Dr. Runge chose to assign hour long lecture videos to watch on our own time instead of at least zooming with us during our class time. It was very test heavy and the tests were very difficult. I would advise taking a different professor if possible.
Dr. Runge is by far one of my fav professors. He knows his stuff. Make sure you take good notes over lectures but also make sure u read the chapters the tests are over. I always took the practice quizzes that are offered in the text book and did fine on each test. He is very caring and will push due dates back if needed. I highly recommend!
I love Professor Runge and this class was great. I always heard hes a very hard prof. and has a very hard class but you can do it. You just have to keep up with the reading and mastering biology. You can tell he cares though and is helpful. Would definitely take him again but make sure you study for the tests. Offers extra credit as well!
Make sure to take really good notes and read the textbook as well. He is a tough grader but you'll also learn he is very caring and passionate about what he teaches.
Dr. Runge is very lecture heavy. His tests are difficult, and you will have to study a lot. He does give bonus points and drops the lowest test score. Attendance is mandatory and if you miss a class, you will be behind. He is very knowledgeable about the course information and is willing to help during his office hours. Overall, a good professor.
Fair warning to anyone that is considering his class: Get ready to have the toughest semester of your entire life. His class is lecture heavy and you are only being graded by the lab quizzes and exams. If you do not study and read the book each day after class you will NOT pass.
He would lecture non stop for 3 hours and doesn't even let us have any break in between. Don't choose 8:00 am class if you are not a morning person. It is very hard to not sleep. I read from the Mastering Biology ebook for 10 hours the day before an exam and it was very hard since he puts in diffucult questions than the lecture.
Do not take him!!! I went to class, took notes, read everything in the text book, and after the first month I had a D and had to drop the class. I emailed him several times asking for tutoring recommendations and to meet with him and he never emailed me back. Several of us had to drop the class and the ones that didn't wish that they did.
Dr. Runge really is a nice guy and good professor, but he changes up his class schedules every semester. I had him last semester, and this semester I heard he changed to only teaching 3 hour classes either at 8am or 2:30-5pm. Check his schedule before picking classes, and if he has 1hr and 15 min classes, then he's great. I took that and made an A.
Steven is an amazing man and will teach everyone all the biology they need to know. Very easy material and easy to follow lectures. Honestly didn't even need the textbook. Really the lectures were optional too. If you fail this class then you should just go ahead and consider switching majors. I'm an art major now.
Dr. Runge is the sole reason I have a low GPA. I finished with a 75%, which was well above average, where friends with other professors had a 75% for the class average. His 8 exams are extremely hard because you have to know the topic well enough to pretty much teach it yourself to pass them. His labs were fun and helped save my grade though.
He's a good guy, but his class is hard. I didn't pick my professor for Bio I and regret not switching when I read bad reviews here. I made straight As in high school and great grades in my other classes the semester I took him but still got a C in this class. Study the textbook. Listen to lecture. Go to SI. Take advantage of bonus points.
Great guy, not a great professor if you're not a strong science student. He assumes you've already taken a Chemistry and Physics course - neither of which are pre-requisites to the course. He will not spend time on the basics, and expects you to jump into higher level concepts. Not a intro Biology course & not a good fit for non-trad students.
There was an exam every other week and it was difficult to prepare for them based on class notes. The lectures were long but most of the slides were just diagrams so it was difficult to have material to study. So Runges solution was to study harder and read the book. Reading the book did not help many students, if any so many people struggled.
I really enjoyed his class overall, even though it was usually 3 hours of lecture. Not planning to do anything biology related in the future, but he made it seem intriguing. His class is very difficult and you have to pay close attention to every lecture and read the textbook to do well on the tests. Offered 1 point of bonus per S.I. session.
Do not take if possible.
Class is genuinely difficult, and the SI sessions don't do much, but Dr. Runge is genuinely very passionate and wants you to learn. He's actually pretty funny too. Great if you're planning on majoring in biology! Eight exams that are composite, gets more difficult as it goes on, and it takes him a bit to grade exams. Get ready to study.
The material is difficult, but if you use the online resources you should do fine.
If you miss an exam b/c you were sick, get ready to have your grade gone and out the window
Dr. Runge is a really sweet person, but he expects quite a lot from his students in this introductory course... He is a tough/critical grader, his lectures are heavy and boring, and his exams are extremely tough to pass. IF you decide to take him... just know you'll probably never make full credit on anything but the homework assignments.
I do not recommend this class, I have known many people who dropped after the first few weeks and even some that dropped college altogether because of this professor. I am in his 3 hour lecture and it is tortuous! I have a hard time staying fully focused and that never helps. His tests are extremely difficult and hard to pass. Don't Take This Class
Dr. Runge is a very nice guy but not the best option for an introductory course. The exams are very difficult to study for and make up the majority of your grade. Over half the class dropped before the end of the semester and I honestly wish I would have. Take someone else if this is your first college Bio.
While he is a very sweet man, he is not a good professor. All you have is a lecture, which is monotone the whole time and his slides are really no help. The only thing taken for a grade is lab and exams. Exams are impossible to study for also!
Dr. Runge's lectures are really easy to understand if you pay attention and take good notes. Most of the materials from the test, however, come from the book, so if you are planning to take this class, be prepared to read. We had eight exams, and that is all your grade it based on. You can succeed in this class, you just have to work for it.
reads off the slides the whole time. amazing man, horrible professor. wont let you record his lectures.
Dr. Runge explains material very well and is a great man. He is passionate about his lectures, but there is a lot of material from the book that is tested too. He gives up to 5 points of bonus on every 50 point test, as well as SI sessions that are 2 points on every test. He provides many resources and opportunities to succeed, but it is not easy.
Lecture heavy and comes off as boring, but he's very qualified to teach the subject. He expects a lot from his students. If you're willing to put in the effort then you should be okay, but you have to read the textbook frequently to really understand the course. Lowest test grade gets dropped at the end. Lab is easy. Overall, nice guy.
wish i could give a 0. the absolute worst. nice guy, awful professor. the test go over nothing you've learned. i had to drop this class 2 months in because i had a 47%. everyone i have talked to in the class also had to drop because of failing grade. worst professor ever!
The professor has a strong chemistry background, which influences his teaching style. He focuses heavily on the chemical makeup of concepts, making the course feel more chemistry-based than intended. Lectures lack depth, requiring significant outside study. If you're willing to put in the effort, you can still succeed despite the challenges.
Challenging and requires a lot of reading. Tests will be over the lecture AND the textbook. Your grade will depend on tests. Fortunately, the textbook clarifies lectures and fills in knowledge gaps, so it's well worth it. Long lectures, but the material comes straight from the book. Read before class to get more out of the lecture.
Dr. Runge is nice and he teaches things with a passion. However, he expects his students to have excess time outside of his class to not only do extensive homework and studying but to also be able to attend SI sessions, which are scheduled on days you don't have class and may have other classes to attend to. No study guides/grade curves, good luck.
Runge is super nice and wants his students to succeed. His tests are sooooo hard. Study hard then study more. good luck
8 tests. I had 8 tests in this course. That's unheard of. AND he lectures after you take a test. Ridiculous. His lectures are boring and unorganized. He doesn't go into depth. Even if you go to SI, you're not gonna do good unless you're a genius. Take another professor
Dr. Runge is an extremely hard professor, we have about 5 classes between every test and he doesn't help us prepare for them. Most of our "Notes" are just pictures. I have never felt prepared for his exams. He is super kind during labs and will let you review your exams but even reading the textbook every week I do not feel prepared for his class.
Study, study, and study some more. I had to drop this class, I dreaded lab and lectures. Labs were just using Excel. Then you had an after-lab assigment, which his instructions were not very clear. Very nice guy, however! Take another professor. Try recording lectures. You need to attend lecture or you will fail! Good luck!
Dr.Runge is the reason I changed my major. This class is honestly pretty awful. Be prepared to put in blood, sweat, and tears. He does expect a lot out of you. Every test gets harder because the knowledge from each test carries over into the next. You have to know your stuff. Tests make up the majority of your grade. You will never feel prepared!!
Dr. Runge is a good guy, and he knows a lot about what he is teaching. He could answer any questions you have! But to keep up in class, please read the textbook. He does offer SI sessions, but this semester those times seemed to be when everyone was busy with other classes or work, so they weren't doable, even though you get bonus points for going.
Dr. Runge lectures right to the bell, so be polite and wait to be dismissed. He asks questions of the class as a whole, feel free to pipe up with the answer, he will appreciate it.
This class is very difficult due to the vast amount of information being thrown at you combined with ridiculously comprehensive exams every other week.
He was not approachable during office hours/ not there. The average grade before the drop deadline was in the 60s and when you went to talk to him he said "study more" or "read the textbook" when everyone was already doing so. Is a nice guy but does not want his students to do well in his class and uses intro to bio as a weed out class.
This is by far the hardest class I've ever taken in my life. As a bio major, I STRUGGLED. I've never made a B in my life until this class. There are 8 exams and they are very hard. I spent countless hours studying. He will not curve or round your grade. Please don't take especially if you are expecting an A in an intro bio class.
If I could give a 0 I would. He does not want his students to do well and missed the exam for a vacation on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, but required us to be there.
Just don't take this professor. That is it. Take someone else for Bio 1. He is hard and poses that he cares about you but it doesn't care enough to see you succeed. Take another professor.
This is by far the worst professor at UCA. He is a very nice person, but his class is impossible. This is coming from someone who has never had anything but A's until this class. It is very test-heavy, and the tests are HARD. He does not curve and most people will fail or drop the class. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
If you didn't get a 5 on the apbio exam and a 36 on the ACT dont take this prof. He doesn't teach and expects you to know real life examples. If you want to pass this course you'll have to read and take notes on all the chapters before each lecture.
Packs 17 excruciating chapters into 8 exams and 1 final. STUDY REGULARLY and utilize your textbook.
His tests are comprehensive. You have to know everything about the chapter plus some. His lectures are fast paced, his slides are hard to understand (mostly pictures without explanations) and you will never be fully prepared. He doesn't make exceptions for special circumstances and does not care. If you get to know him personally he's respectable.
