VERY boring. He's the ultimate personification of what a NERD is. Avoid his class like its the plague.
His tests are very difficult and he grades them hard. He gives you papers to do, if you do well on them, that can bring your score up. Everyone I know has a D average or lower in his class
Not clear and tests are very hard
he sucks and he is a big nerd
VERY BORING AND HARD!!!!
Steve is a really difficult teacher. His tests are nuts and the assignments were for the most part annoying. I would strongly suggest finding a different prof.
The class is kinda alot of work but he's great at reading over papers so you can get a better grade. Tests arent that bad if you like short essays.
These peope are dumb...Dr. Schnell is funny in a dry sort of way he tells you EXACTLY whats gonna be on the test, and his papers are easy and worth a good amount of points...I bet these people are lazy and bitter they got bad grades
He is a very good teacher. He explains things very clearly and is always willing to help u. His assignments are a pain but they bring up your grade a lot. Also he curves the tests. Just go to class, take good notes, do your assignments, and study hard.
He never tells you whats gonna be on his exams, every thing he says that will be on the exam never actually is. He gives you a long review sheet with a bunch of stuff that is never on the exam for no reason whatsoever
Mr. Schnell knows his stuff, but he has a problem with explaining to people what is going to be on the tests. THis is not a freaking major class that students have to take...learn how to TEACH! It is an ELECTIVE!!!!
Not clear about what's on the tests...and the people that say we are just bitter because we got bad grades..you are probably just as dull and boring as Steve is..and for the most part we did pass the class!!!!
the class isn't supposed to be hard, but he makes it that way. his review sheets are pointless and not very helpful!
Good teacher, passionate about class, need to attend all lecures
Hilarious Professor! Assignments help with info comprehension. Go to class, take notes, and ask questions. Recommended if you are in college to learn.
very boring class, had trouble staying awake when i wasn't tired to begin w/...many ppl slept in my class, review sheets are pointless, they are long and tedious, you need to follow the syllabus and read all the material beforehand..does not tell u to rea
I really enjoyed the class, i learned more from his class than i learned from all my classes combined. The people who don't like him are just lazy and didn't apply themselves. the most rewarding course I took at KU
People need to take the time is pretty interesting, but tries to cram too much information into one unit. It's a lot of work(not as much reading) but if you do the review sheets(although LONG), youre fine
This is my second class with him. Kinda dorky guy but really knows what hes talking about. He will throw so much material at you and expect you to become an expert in a day!Study sheets are basically everything. Can't be lazy in his class but you'll learn
Just study, I enjoy his class.
Not easy by any means, but if you go to class and do what he tells you to you'll do well. Makes you do work, but works for you to. Good guy!
Not the most exciting class I've ever taken but he makes it a lot more interesting than I would expect. I was successful in his class probably because of his clarity. I recommend him for Cul. Geo.
big DORK! looks real sexy in those hawaiian shirts...NOT! his review sheets are long and pointless...his class basically sucks.

good prof if you like the subject. interesting if your class is intrested and gets involved. only a few assignments and 3 tests-- easy if you go to class and hand in the assignments... hes kinda dorky but purty funny.
lets you tape record him if you ask then you can copy the notes. map quizes are easy a ****. you have to do 3 projects in the year if you do them you will done fine. I got an A
You have to attend class, you have to take notes and you have to study. If you can handle doing what you are supposed to do it is a good class. The tests are not very hard. The prof is a nice guy. He is very into his job.
I hated this man and his teaching. I hated his class! He was unclear in the projects to do and how he wanted them... but if u didnt do them the way he wanted, you got a TERRIBLE grade! I suggest you take Prof. Courtney if possible over this guy...
Dr. Schnell is a cool guy. If you take his class and are too dumb and lazy to do the work, that's your prob. He really knows his stuff and seems very passionate about it. Most of you who who rated him are pissed cos you can't major in ****s and beer.
He is the nicest prof you will ever take... he will help you if you just ask... go to class, take notes, you don't even need the book, just the atlas and you'll pass I got a B with very little work
schnell is a pretty down to earth guy.. the map quizzes are easy and the tests are kind of hard but if you study you shouldnt have a prob.. you take alot of notes so you have to go to class because most of the test is notes.. so fari have a B
He is a great teacher who curves tests! People B*tch that his tests are hard but as long as you take good notes and come to class you will do well! People doing poorly obviously didn't study. I had him for 2 classes, and did well!
GREAT teacher! Map quizzes are easy, 3 projects, and 3 tests. The tests are straight from lecture! come to class and take good notes! His lectures are clear, and as long as you come to class and take clear notes, you will get an A
Hes a pretty cool guy, its easy to get into a lot of discussions one on one with him. Hes a little dorky looking, but looks can be deceiving. The class isnt too bad, just go to class and do the work and you should be fine.
He is a really nice guy, a little dorky but he makes the class interesting. You will do fine as long as you go to class and take good notes. He gives you everything on the test before it so its no problem. Def take it, interesting class, better than Physical Geography, less memorizing!
Dr. Schnell really knows his stuff. He's a good professor who really cares about his students doing well. His class is pretty tough though, lots of notes. If you can handle going to class a lot and taking a lot of notes, then take him.
alright.. first of all i went to class everyday and took notes, and i studied my ass off for the tests and i still got D's.. what the f**k?? anywho... he's not all bad, but try to take someone else, i'm sure there's someone whos better than him
This guy is a nerd. His lectures are really boring and his tests are really hard. The only reason he curves is because otherwise everyone would fail. Take someone else.
he isnt good
I don't get the other people's problem with this guy. I like him, yeah the lectures can be boring but if you just put forth the effort and do the work you'll be fine. He is helpful, just ask and he'll drop everything to look over a paper.
This guy is the MAN!!!!! Class with him was hilarious. If I was a geography major, I would take him for every class that I could. Got an A in the class with very little effort. Schnell Rules!!!
Steve Schnell is a really great guy. If more profs. were like him KU would have a lot better profs. I would take him again if I could, but I already got an A in his class. Keeps class really fun and interesting. I urge you to take him! He's the best there is...
This class sucks ass! Even if you go to class everyday, take notes, and participate, you'll never get an A! Take someone else if possible. If you hand in assignments early for him to look over he'll criticize you up a wall and you still won't get a good grade. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!!
As of right now i have a D in his class.. i've failed all his test and quizzes but he does random attendance and that gives you 10% of your grade. he lets you turn in your 3 BIG papers early so he can look at them and help you. just study a LOT and you'll be ok
His class was fun. So is the book you learn alot about our culture, its landscape, and the reasons behind it. I loved his lecture on the Amish and breweries. Take notes, read the book, and write out the answers to his test reviews indepth and an A is def possible I got a 960/1000 points.
hes a good teahcer and is extremly willing to help if you ask. His tests are very difficult though. I did learn alot form the course
Very interesting and helpful. If you study you'll get an A, he is very clear about what he expects and what u need to know for the tests. Definatly would take him again
He was very knowledgeable on this subject. He is funny and very helpful. Take good notes in his class, they are important for the tests.
Gives fantastic lectures, but can be condescending toward students. Tests are well-written but very information-intensive.
Schnell is one of the few good prof's i've had at ku. he knows just about everything there is to possibly know about the topic, and is very willing to help. good notes are essential, as is a lot of time devoted to studying. the class isn't an "easy A"~you have to work for it, but thats what college is supposed to be.
I love Schnell. He knows what he's talking about and doesnt overwhelm you with his education. That's a lot to say about KU, most professors either impose their views or belittle your intelligence with their massive brains. I'll definately take him again. HE made me interested in GEO like I never was before and now I'm majoring in it
Easy teacher. Tests require application of what you STUDIED. Gives you plenty of chances for improvement. Opportunity to CORRECT WHAT WAS WRONG on your test AFTER it is graded. Helpful, I email him any time I have problem. He inspired me to major in geography. I was previously an unhappy English major.
This prof sucks. His tests are extremely hard, and when going to his office to talk to him he gives you a hard time and only wants to bother with you if u kiss his a** in class. Do not take him.
he knows alot about geo, but his tests are really hard as are his quizes and he gives alot of work at once be prepared to work hard and take good notes, you'll need them!
hes a jerk....very hard test and quizes...talks all class but never write down notes....gives alot of work at once...and deducted alot of points for absences
Hes a good teacher and knows his stuff but he will make you sleepy 20 minutes into the lecture. If you study and do your work you should be alright
Tests are really intense, need to take good notes, good professor knows what he is talking about, does other things to help your grade, lets you hand tests back with corrections for extra points, overall good professor but not an easy class
Awesome. Helpful, experienced, cares. Very involved. Tests make you know your stuff, but you can correct them for extra points and make up your own question and answer it for extra credit. Requires you to show up and stay awake, which shouldn't be a problem because it's interesting. very fair.
sooo smart and interesting, makes me want to go to class knows so much and is a good lecturer, VERY INETERESTING
he's very nice and covers alot of material. tests are very crammed full of info. projects are hard. definitely need to study for this class!
Dr. Schnell is a great professor. He always displayed comprehensive knowledge of the material. You will learn a lot if you take a class with him. He always got the class involved in discussion. Well over half the class received A's and the rest were B's.
He is a very good and knowledgable professor. He gives 2 papers and 3 tests, all graded fairly in my opinion. he gives you opportunities to make corrections on your test and gain a good amount of points.
takes random attendance 10 times and you get a grade for it. so interesting, hes really been to a lot of the places he tells us about. knows what hes doing, and he's so fair!
I took Dr. Schnell for Cultural Geography, Geography of US and Canada, and Globalization. When I first took him for US and Canada, I ended up changing majors to Geography and he is now my advisor. He's an easy teacher for those who are serious about school. Offers the opportunity to make up points on wrong answers to tests.
He trys to be a good teacher and he can be when he doesnt talk REALLY fast. but whatever you do, dont take another class 10 mins after his because he ALWAYS lets you out 5 mins late and you cant ever make it to your next class on time, frusterating yes. his tests.... better study from the day u get your review sheet. he can be hard and rude
Really awesome teacher!
I love this teacher! He's such an adorable guy! He's really knowledgeable and teaches it clearly. You really have to pay attention, and coming to class will definitely help you get a better grade... Take good notes and study, and the tests are do-able. He lets you correct the tests afterwards and you can go up a full grade. Def take him!!
His tests are very hard and you have to read the textbook and e-reserves to even have a chance on them. He barely writes anything on the board and he just "talks" to you. He is very boring and takes random attendance, for your class participation grade & his projects are ridiculous! I would not recommend taking him.
He's a funky skull and he's a Scorpio, and when he's in his flow he's Dr. On-the-Go. Hate 'em, Stevey.
Very hard teacher. You learn a lot, but you have to study your butt off if you want an A. A lot of people dropped the class because they couldn't handle it. If you don't want to do work, don't take this class. The papers are really hard, and the tests are ridiculous. He is a great guy though. Lecture is really easy to understand. He is really nice!
He likes busy work (even when there's a big project due).
I had him for honors so there were no tests but we had a huge 10 page paper and presentation. It seemed like a lot of work but it wasnt that bad. He's really clear and understanding. I'd say take him.
Be prepared to lean alot about geography. He does a good job keeping it fairly interesting. tests can be tricky but put in your time and you'll do just fine. Oh and he can talk rather fast so stay focused
The tests were pretty hard, but he gives you a study guide and if you do that and study it you should do pretty well. Also, go to class because a lot of info from class is on the test. He's overall a good teacher and gives a lot of different ways to gain points.
he talks pretty fast and I found it very hard to take good notes. if you don't like geography i wouldn't recommend him for you.
I have mixed feelings: in one aspect his tests are hard, its a gen ed that i dont care about, and he uses ALL the time for the classes.. dont expect to get out early. On the other hand, he gives a lot of opportunities to get points. but still his class wasnt really THAT exciting.. i thought the class dragged on. wouldnt take him again.
Absolutely HATED this class, should have dropped it when I had the chance. Textbook activity assignments are pointless and time consuming. All his stories are about Northern Ghana and Sub-Saharan Africa. Good guy, bad teacher, interesting sense of humor. Make sure to participate in class.
Talks very fast, so its hard to take notes. Does not write much on board, so it's a must to listen. He takes random attendence, for a grade, and if you miss one class, youre screwed, because you will miss alot of information. Tests are hard, and usually 5 short answer questions on each test that require detailed answers. Nice guy though
he needs to understand that this is an intro level class. ive done more to get an A in this class than some of my 300 level classes. extremely fast talker. quick note taking skills required.
Loved this class. On tests, he gives an extra credit question that you get to make up and answer, and when you get the test back you can do corrections for more points. Don't bother buying the book- I didn't and easily got an A. You do need to go to class though because his tests are based on lectures and very much info is covered each day. Nice g
Dr. Schnell is a very knowledgable professor in US & Canadian geography. Unfortunately, he tends to talk very fast & does not write much on the board. His exams are not easy & he requires a lot of details on essays. An A is possible, but only if you study a LOT. Gives extra credit for participation & allows test corrections for up to 20 points.
I'm almost positive he had absolutely no idea what my name is. His topic choices were extremely interesting, but the class as a whole just didn't flow well. It didn't help that I never actually got to connect with anyone in the class, due to minimal group work or chatting time.
Schnell teaches an interesting course with awesome topics. Be a great listener and take notes and anything he tells u to read, READ IT! Exams are intense and include essay questions but are manageable since he offers many opportunities for extra credit and corrections on work that is not a 100%. Awesome info, just take notes and pay attention.
Took this class to raise my GPA. Not a good idea. It actually brought it down. I thought for an intro. class that it would be easy. Yeah, no. If you don't take notes, you will fail. And, half the stuff we learn is never tested on. BS. Wasted my time learning info when I should have been learning about something else.
Very smart and interesting guy, very cool class. That said, SO difficult for an intro class. You need to go to class every day and the exams are HARD. MUST use the study guides. READ ALL THE E-RESERVES; he picks them randomly for essay questions, so you will be doing a lot of extra reading for an A. Avoid if not terribly serious about this subject.
This class was okay but if you cant write your notes really fast it will be difficult. I literally wrote down everything he said so I ended up getting a B in the class. He gives a study guide before exams, DEF FILL IT OUT AND STUDY THAT! short essay questions come from study guide. Pay attention, write everything he says, youll be okay.
he is a really nice guy and he definitely loves what he does! however he doesnt use D2L and doesnt write his notes down anywhere, you actually have to pay very close attention and just write down everything he says. His tests were hard but he gives a study guide which is a MUST DO. He also lets you correct your tests which can go up a full grade.
Discussion based class. He wants to know what you think! Just read whats required, its not a lot, and you will take so much away from it. Extremely smart, incredibly interesting and tons of life experience. Best prof Ive ever had. Down to earth, helpful, clever, funny. Knows his stuff inside and out. Made me want to change my major!
Amazing teacher! A hard course but totally worth it. He makes you work for your grade but you take away a lot from his lectures. He doesn't use d2l and doesn't write much on the board so be prepared to listen. A very interesting class and if you are willing to try hard you'll get a good grade and leave with lots of knowledge.
Hes a good professor and knows a variety of different material. Really educated guy.
I could come into his lectures with the most energy in the world and his voice always put me to sleep. He obviously loves his job but he is stuck in the past. Never uses powerpoint for notes he's real old school and just stands there and talks and expects you to write down each word you say. Test are very hard, better read every single reading.
He is a good guy and you can tell he is really into his job, but he is SO BORING. He tries to be funny; it doesn't work. You have to write down everything he says in your notes, but it is almost impossible sometimes because he goes so fast. Show up to class or you will miss a lot! I honestly hate this class. Dr. Schnell is a good man though.
Schnell is a great professor and an amazing guy. He made cultural geography really interesting and I always looked forward to coming to class. He has you write some small papers but it's easy points. The tests are very difficult though, but you get to make corrections on them to get some points back which was a blessing.
The class is fine if you're looking for a relatively easy gen ed. The professor has that obnoxious "holier-than-thou" vibe and will throw a fit any time he sees a phone, even if you aren't looking at it.
225 is a discussion based class and it was pretty cool. Its a GEG class that isn't really a GEG class. Assigns a couple of short readings per week with a blog post and a discussion. Class will be boring if people don't read and participate. Wasn't hard at all but some topics weren't my cup of tea. Very nice guy and old school. Would recommend
Overall he is a very smart teacher that knows a lot about what he is teaching. Very hard grader though. Doesn't let go of spelling mistakes and small things. Lots of out of class work also.
Dr. Schnell was a bad teacher in my opinion. The class was very hard, and you can't even read his hand writing. He just lectures the whole class every class. His test's are hard, and you only get 3 of them. I would suggest passing on taking him if you can take a different prof I would!!
There is a lot of reading assignments. You might not even go over it but then other times he'll make you get out a half sheet and write a response to it. Its a coin toss with him. Really hard not to fall asleep in there. Hes also a really tough grader. He literally gave out a sheet on grammar and punctuation the first day of class.
I'm seeing people diss Scnell from Geography 020 which is the most basic gen ed geography class you could possibly take. I am in no ways a stellar student and had a high A average because I actually showed up, listened, and took notes. People are complaining about doing that as if that's not to be expected of you from EVERY college course. Grow up.
I think a lot of people discredit this guy because he lectures most of the class and tells you he wants really specific information from you on assignments and tests. Hes honestly a really understanding person whos great to get to know thoughso even if you need to get gen-ed classes out of the way, Id recommend at least one class with him.
I really enjoyed Schnell's US and Canada class, and it was only a gen ed for me. His lectures are really interesting and he is clearly really into the knowledge as well as teaching. The tests are kind of hard, but I still passed the class with an A despite not studying too much. It's mostly looking at maps and taking notes on thins he emphasizes.
Dr Schnell is a great guy, he really cares about his students and the material. His tests are HARD if you dont fill out the study guide you will not pass them. He takes attendance randomly, mostly on Fridays. The textbook is online and he assigns a lot of reading. DO THE READING and pay attention in class, he uses examples from his lectures on test
Honestly, he's a really nice guy, but his class was so much work. Everything was very very easy, but there was just a lot of work for the class in general. He's really big on reading assignments too, expect about 30-40 pages almost every Friday.
Professor Schnell is very kind, and you can tell that he's passionate about what he does, but there is no reason for there to be this much work in an FYS. Expect to do a lot more reading than is necessary and make sure you are prepared for discussions. It's difficult to balance all of the reading with the other major projects he assigns.
Dr. Schnell was a great professor. His class is lecture based. If you show up and take good notes, you will be okay. There will be a lot of note taking, but the notes are super important and helpful when it comes to taking his exams.
Good guy who is very educated on geography, although the actual class sucks. Tests are EXTREMELY specific. He hands out a "review" sheet for each test, which is just a long list of open-ended questions that would take you HOURS upon HOURS to complete. Attendance is random as well. Honestly, if you can, avoid. There are better professors.
Nothing against Professor Schnell but this class was my hardest course yet. Constant notes, constant studying, and constant stress. Put in the work though and you will be rewarded for your efforts.
I've never had so much work for a single class. I took this class in the same semester as organic chemistry and microbiology. I can positively say that this class had more than double the work than both of those classes.
Great teacher but way too many quizzes and tests.
He is a fairly easy grader, just make sure to do everything on time and follow the criteria, he does give a lot of writing assignments but he gives you more than enough time for them.
As long as you do good on all the smaller assignments and go to class to get the randomly chosen graded attendance days, you will pass even with high F's and D's on the tests. He also allows you to get extra points back on tests with corrections, but he only gives up to 20 points back at max. Also, definitely read the online book.
Good guy. His assignments are a little tough (especially his Census Data assignment in which you have to look through old census books for a paper) but I really did enjoy his class. FYI, The first few lectures are boring. Overall, you do learn a lot about Pennsylvania and its history which personally gave me extra appreciation of my home state.
The class was very lecture heavy but I enjoyed it. There is a yearlong project and 3 noncomprehensive exams throughout the semester. The tests weren't very hard because he gives a study guide that is exactly the test.
Dr. Schnell is amazing and knows his stuff. I've never met a professor so passionate about their field before. Even though I just took this class for Honors credit, it is easily my favorite class I've ever taken. It was so insightful and interesting! Assignments are clear and offers great feedback. No exams at all, just projects. Take this class!
This class covers a lot of material in one semester, so it is definitely fast-paced. His tests are multiple choice with short essays and always extra credit opportunities. There is a textbook, but I never used it and did well. There also are a few papers that are five pages in length each, so be prepared for that.
Dr Schnell was a good man and I feel I learned from him. The class (geography) was a gen ed so nothing I was terribly interested in, but I didn't hate it- He gives a decent number of assignments but the majority I found manageable enough. Also he doesn't give exams which I really liked.
The professor's struggle with lecturing and heavy reliance on group assignments leaves students grappling to grasp the material. Clear, effective communication is pivotal for comprehension, which seems lacking in this approach.
soooo many assignments and readings you won't even believe.
One of the hardest elective I have ever taken. Please stay away from taking this class unless u want a challenge for some reason. Really really nice guy but very strict grader, heavy notes and test material is insanely hard to study for.
Very, very lackluster.
The class wasn't too tricky. You had 8 four-page papers (25%), a 20+ page final paper (17%), 4 blog posts with 250-word replies (25%), and 5 homework assignments (25%). Participation was 25%, and a presentation counted for 8%. Work was evenly spread, making it manageable despite the variety.
Prof. Schnell's class has a lot of reading and writing, but he's fair. Stay on top of assignments, use the textbook, and check out Unstuckstudy for extra study help. Overall, the workload is manageable if you put in the effort.
I am currently taking him for CMP 201 and he is the nicest guy. He is so down to earth and cares about his students improving. The only thing I don't like is that he won't show you grades until finals week but it is also beneficial so you focus on improving your writing as opposed to grades.
Geography of US and Canada was one of my favorite classes I've ever taken at KU. It was very interesting and I learned a lot
Dr. Schnell is still finding a way to be a competent educator despite dealing with cancer. I find this to be truly inspirational. Not only that, but he gives really thoughtful feedback on assignments and makes you a much better writer. My only grievance is the amount of homework he assigns, however, it was rarely difficult.
He's a very sweet man, and he strives to give you good feedback and grow as a writer. You get to “choose” your grade for the class, but you need to back it up. That being said, go to class, do the work, and you'll get an A. Even if it's low-quality, just try, you'll do well. Sometimes the assignments seemed pointless, but see the previous comment.
The essays are difficult to get through but he gives amazing feedback and does one on one meetings with each student.
In general, I respected him a lot as a person. He is empathetic and down to earth. However, the amount of homework (especially for a first year seminar) was absolutely overwhelming. At one point I think I had 8 ish assignments to work on all at once. BUT he usually does give notice for large assignments well in advance which I appreciated.
He assigns way too much work for an fys class... the class was easy just boring and the essays are a pass if you did it, that was the good part. you spend many classes on the same thing and the class is pretty much a waste of space very unneeded the who concept of the class was a space is a place without meaning and a place is a space with meaning.
My most difficult class dispute it being FYS. Assigned so much HW each week it was absurd. This class had more essays than a comp100. I constantly felt stressed about getting his work done. Prof used mostly paper and random things would be on different paper lists. Made it hard to find anything. He didn't like to replete himself or clarify things.
He's borderline allergic to technology except for the projector he uses during lectures. All homework needs to be printed out. He seems like an okay guy with subtle humor, but assignments are excessive. Free time doesn't exist, and he acts like FYSM is your only class. Freshmen should avoid his class at all costs.
